Yonex Astrox 88D Pro, Tour, Game Badminton Racket Review & Comparison

Updated: Oct 4, 2022

I have been sitting on this post for quite some time now and have finally decided to pull the plug and get this published. For those of you who have been waiting on this review, please accept my apologies for the delay!

Astrox 88D Pro, Tour and Game

So Yonex has recently released two additional models of the Astrox 88D --- besides the made in Japan Yonex Astrox 88D Pro , there are now the made in Taiwan Yonex Astrox 88D Tour and the Astrox 88D Game models. You all know I love the Astrox 88D Pro . A quick recap of the characteristics of the Pro model: head-heavy, solid-feel, very fast for a head-heavy racket, smooth, lots of power, easily maneuverable.

Yonex Racket Matrix

Now if we look at the Astrox 88D Tour racket, it retains the fully recessed frame profile of the Pro model rackets, but for me, I felt its head is significantly lighter compared to the Pro model racket and, therefore, significantly faster and also easier to play with. It feels like a head-light racket and also less stiff and more hollow compared to the Pro model. You can easily generate enough power from the back of the court and it allows you to get out of trouble easily and effectively. And because of how quick the racket is, it is rapid at the front of the court. So to be honest, I was very impressed with this racket and I don’t have a single bad thing to say actually. However, if you are expecting something which feels identical to the Astrox 88D Pro but at a cheaper price point, then you might be disappointed because this doesn't play the same way as the Astrox 88D Pro .

The Astrox 88D Game , on the other hand, has a close resemblance to the Astrox 88D Tour in terms of feel, with only subtle differences. It has a slightly bigger racket frame compared to the Tour and Pro models, as well as a slightly thicker shaft. It also has a half-recessed frame profile compared to a fully-recessed frame profile on the other two higher-end models. For the stats people, here is a table of measured stats from all three brackets:

Measurements of the Astrox 88D Series

In terms of playing feel, the Astrox 88D Game racket has an even more hollow feeling compared to the Astrox 88D Tour racket. It is also a touch more head-light compared to the Tour racket and, similarly, very easy to play with. Power shots are crisp, drives were easy, shuttle length and height were good. Easy to pull off get-out-of-jail shots when you're in trouble.

As part of my test, I went from the Astrox 88D Game to the Astrox 88S Pro , just to see how it feels when it is compared side-by-side with a famously head-light racket. Instantly, I thought the Astrox 88S Pro was stiffer and has a better feel of the shuttle. Crucially, the Astrox 88S Pro felt head-heavier than the Astrox 88D Game , and it glides through the air better with a more solid feel. This was why I was so confused during my testing. Because the Astrox 88D Game is a D model racket, I presumed that it should feel head-heavier compared to an S model, but I was wrong. In fact, I genuinely feel that the Astrox 88D Tour and Astrox 88D Game models have less head weight compared to the Astrox 88S Pro , and they are very different compared to the Astrox 88D Pro model. Additionally, the Astrox 88D Tour and Astrox 88D Game models don't feel as smooth as the Pro. I felt a little bit of a drag when I played with them, but that's probably just me being picky.

Taking the retail price of the Astrox 88D Tour and the Astrox 88D Game racket models into consideration, their performance and production quality are really impressive for their price points. I'm not sure if Yonex intended the Astrox 88D Tour and Astrox 88D Game models to play and feel the same as the Pro model, but with cheaper materials. Honestly, if you don't compare them side-by-side, each of them plays pretty well on its own. I would really recommend you try the Astrox 88D Tour and Astrox 88D Game rackets out for yourself to see if you can pinpoint the subtle differences.

So if we refer to the Yonex racket matrix, I would position the Astrox 88D Tour and the Astrox 88D Game rackets models as shown below.

Pro Tip: If you guys are giving the Tour and Game models a try, which I certainly recommend, make sure you guys remove the factory strings and re-string them using strings and string tension of your preference. The strings will have a significant impact on your experience with these rackets.

See you in my next post!

ROTATIONAL GENERATOR SYSTEM + 2G-Namd™ FLEX FORCE

By applying the counterbalance theory, weight is carefully distributed throughout the grip end, frame top and joint, enabling smooth transition between powerful shots for rapid, successive attacks. The innovative graphite “2G-Namd TM   Flex Force” used in the shaft, characterized by its quick flex and snapback, maximizes shot power and advances the performance of the Rotational Generator System.

Ultra Slim Shaft

Thinnest Ever with More Power

Inserting NANOPREME into the racquet shaft ensures greater stability compared to conventional racquets. When bending and releasing two racquets under the same force, the Ultra Slim Long Shaft rebounds almost twice as far as a conventional racquet does in the same length of time (0.018 seconds). This equates to 10% greater stability compared with conventional racquets.

Energy Boost CAP PLUS

Uniquely shaped cap which maximizes shaft performance. The front allows the shaft to flex, while the sides arch-shaped curve stabilizes the racquet face by preventing the shaft from twisting.

REXIS Shaft

Stability weight distribution.

The added weight distribution on the sides of the frame enhances stability during the swing, resulting in maximized smash power.

And allowing for the effective breakdown of defenses during back-court attacks.

Enlarged Sweet Spot

ISOMETRIC TM   technology continues to help the world’s greatest players achieve global success.

Developed over 30 years ago, the ISOMETRIC TM   design increases the sweet spot by 7%*. Compared to a conventional round frame, a square-shaped ISOMETRIC TM   racquet generates a larger sweet spot by optimizing the intersection of the main and cross strings.

ISOMETRIC TM   delivers greater control without sacrificing power. ISOMETRIC TM   is a Trademark of Yonex CO., LTD. *Tested by Yonex

Yonex Astrox 88D Pro, 88D Game & 88D Tour Badminton Racket Video Comparison

This video explains the differences between the three versions of the Astrox 88D called the Astrox 88D Pro, 88D Game and 88D Tour

The new Yonex Astrox 88 series was launched in March 2021. Surprisingly, in addition to the D and S models, Yonex has introduced “takedown” versions with identical colourways but slightly different features to reflect the price.

How do they feel and more importantly, how do they play?

(If you would prefer a written version of this video, there is a transcript further down)

Yonex Astrox 88D Pro, 88D Game & 88D Tour Comparison – Video Transcript

On this video, I am reviewing 3 88Ds.

These are the Yonex Astrox 88Ds that were launched in March 2021.

So the intention of this video is to give you a comparison between the Pro, the Tour & the Game in terms of physical properties & also playability.

If you enjoyed watching these videos, please press the Subscribe button below, so you will receive notifications of further videos to follow.

So, let’s get on with the reviews & let’s compare the 88D Tour & the 88D Pro.

The Pro is now stable in my bag at the moment & it’s going to be a racket I’m going to use a lot with the Astrox 100ZZ to compare other frames to in the future but I found it’s an absolutely brilliant racket. There is a full review already on my website which is www.badminton-coach.co.uk. There is also a video on YouTube with a comparison to the original Astrox 88D.

So you’re pretty aware that this is a great racket very very maneuverable, lots of power & I’ve really enjoyed using this racket over the last few months. So now we want to compare it to the other 2 rackets that I’ve been testing over the last few weeks.

So let’s start with the Game.

The Game you will already see has a different head shape, although colour scheme is absolutely identical, the only difference being the decal here says Game whereas on the D Pro, it just says Astrox. Racket length is the same, handle length is the same, shaft length is the same. But you will notice, there is a difference here in shape of the ferrule. There is also a difference in the thickness of the shaft. You’ll also find that this, the Game is a little bit more flexible compared to the D Pro you see that doesn’t bend quite as much. D Pro is manufactured in Japan, & the Game & the Tour are manufactured in Taiwan. So this is probably the furthest removed in terms of specs that we’re going to have compared to the original D Pro, but still a very very good racket in its own right.

We’ll talk about budgets later, but this is still a head heavy racket, this is got a balance point of 310 so it’s still good, it’s still head heavy. But again what we have noticed is the weight isn’t at the top of the head but there’s definitely weight here that carries the racket head through really, really well. It’s still quick, not as quick as the D Pro but it’s still a fast frame. But this is a budget racket.

One thing I will mention, this is a G5 grip, this is a G5 grip. For some reason the G5 grip on the Game & the Tour is slightly bigger than the Japanese model. No idea why, but it is ever so slightly bigger, not too much that it becomes a G4 but it’ll probably fit in somewhere in between, but just that’s just a quick little thing I did notice.

So we know that playability is good with this racket. Good in defense, good in attack.

Budget price for this racket, this is retailing for around about £80 in the UK whereas the D Pro is retailing for around about £150. So you more or less can buy two of these, for one of these. And for the intermediate player, this (the Game) could be an absolute bargain at £80. It’s a really really good racket. And as I say with it being slightly more flexible, not quite as heavy as this one, so therefore a little bit more forgiving, and a lot more familiar in feel to other Yonex rackets compared to the new head shape & the stiffness of this one. So you might actually find that this is going to be an absolute star for you in club badminton & you’re going to get a lot of value for money with the Game.

So well, worth a look at, if you get a chance to test it against this one then please do, you will feel the difference but it’s not going to be absolutely huge but it’s well worth testing. But as I say, you can more or less buy two of these for one of these. So in terms of going to club night if you get 2 of these if you break a string go & get your replacement, fantastic can’t do better than that.

Let’s have a quick look at the Tour.

Now, the Tour is a closer copy of the Pro. The head shape is the same & if I line them up, we’ll see the handle size is the same, ferrules are the same, they are both stiff shafts they are both the thinner shafts, so very, very close copy indeed. What you will see there is a Tour logo on this racket the same, we’ve only got the Astrox logo on this one.

Again, not quite as heavy as this, although the BP on this is 308. So it’s still a good head heavy racket. This is a stiffer shaft compared to the Game that you saw before and you’ve already seen me flex that one already.

So you got a good idea that this is a lot lot closer in terms of playability. Yes it’s a touch lighter in the head, but still maneuvers really really well. Yet again that G5 grip is slightly bigger than the Japanese version, but ever so slightly. So it just means you just going to have to watch it if you’re going to change your grips at all & watch the thickness a little bit, if you like to be a lot more specific. Aside from that 2 brilliant rackets, love the Tour as well. This is going to retail for around about £115 against £150. So saving there for you. Identical in looks apart from the one decal. So very, very good value for money, plays brilliant, nice quick racket as you would expect, still got power, still got maneuverability, which is what we’re really looking for. So that’s the Astrox 88D Tour.

So, there we have it, we’ve had the Game, we’ve got the Tour & we got the Pro, all three really good rackets in their own right.

Three different price points, so £80, £115 & around about £150 for the D Pro.

Really, really good value. I think they’re all great rackets as I said before, all maneuverable, one’s a little bit more forgiving with that medium flex shaft on the Game & is probably going to a suit a lot more plays of intermediate standard. But all three great rackets & well worth testing if you get a chance.

So there you are, look out for my website where I’ll do individual reviews of the Tour & the Game very soon. Please do subscribe to the channel so you can get further notifications on the next video where I will probably be reviewing the Astrox 88S comparing the Pro & the Tour & the Game. But for now three great Astrox 88’s.

I hope you enjoyed the video & I hope to see you again very soon.

Astrox 88D Game review: powerful, but forgettable

' src=

  • February 26, 2024
  • 8 minute read

as 88d tour

2024 Update: With the new release of the third generation , I thought it was worth pointing out that this Yonex Astrox 88D Game review covers the second generation which appears to be fairly different from the new 2024 edition based on the specs.

This one appears more head heavy and powerful compared to the newer edition. Knowing Yonex, it probably won’t be long since this version will not be available for sale anymore as they are phasing it out in exchange for the new one.

The review will be updated when I get a chance to test the new generation. Until then, the current review behinds now.

This Yonex Astrox 88D Game review has been 6 months underway as I was struggling to get my hands on the racket.

When I finally found a store that had stock available, they only got a few units at any given time, so I had to act quickly. Fortunately, I was able to get it sent to my family and I picked it up the last time I went back to visit them.

Despite the inconveniences, that just made this review even more exciting.

This Game model is a head-heavy racket prone to power and among Yonex’s most powerful ones.

Where the Game is the model intended for intermediate players, the Astrox 88D Play is geared towards beginners, and the Tour and Pro models are for advanced players or better.

The Astrox 88D series is used by Marcus Gideon and branded as a doubles racket specifically for the rearcourt player.

As I was researching Yonex’s marketing for the racket, I noticed that it’s almost exclusively mentioned alongside its cousin, the Astrox 88S, which is intended for the frontcourt doubles player.

It’s a sexy idea from a marketing perspective, but let’s see how this affordable intermediate-model stacks up on court!

The factory strings that Yonex rackets come with tend to be strung at poor tensions, so I immediately got it restrung. As with other rackets I’ve reviewed, I got it restrung to the Yonex BG80, which is a power (repulsion) string , to keep my reviews consistent.

Table of Contents

Yonex astrox 88d game specifications and technology, best player types for astrox 88d game, astrox 88d game compared to other popular rackets.

I’ve been playing with this 4U racket for ten hours on court during practice drills and games, and I’m reviewing it with intermediate players in mind.

Coming from the Astrox 77 Pro, which feels stiffer and requires better technique but offers less power, my first experience with the Astrox 88D Game was hitting the shuttle out of the court. A lot.

As I began playing with this racket, I quickly realized that net play requires plenty of self-discipline and control.

I often found it tricky to generate the perfect amount of power on soft, flat, and short shots. I’d either use too much power and not play as tight as I wanted, or hit the shuttle in an arch, offering my opponents more time to react.

One example of this is playing a “safe” net kill on shots close to the net. The power made it feel SO easy to hit out of the court when you’re not able to play it steeply out of fear of hitting the net or having the racket cross over (and causing a fault).

To be fair, that could be down to my technique, but I’m sharing it as you may feel the same if you’re an intermediate player.

As you’d expect, power is the key attribute this racket offers.

Unless I was standing behind the double rear service line, it felt almost too easy to hit clears out of the court, especially flatter attacking clears . I had to get into the habit of containing power instead of going all out as you might on less powerful rackets, such as those that are even balanced .

Even being caught off guard on a clear and having to move back to cover it while being out of position was no problem. I’ve sometimes experienced that on less powerful rackets, like the Astrox 77 Pro , that turns into a poor shot that’s far too short. That wasn’t the case here.

Lifts felt easy too. I’ve begun to like getting that extra bit of power a head-heavy racket offers when I get tired or have an off day. It means I can be slightly later on the shuttle and still hit a proper lift to the backline rather than a poor one to the midcourt that gets smashed back in my face.

Smashing is fun but there’s not much to say: the racket is among the most powerful for intermediate players. If you love power, you’ll like the Astrox 88D Game.

Speaking of smashes…

Midcourt and defense

When it comes to smash blocks, I found that you don’t need to use much arm or shoulder movement to send smashes back over the net. Simply letting the shuttle bounce off of the racket while you guide its direction is enough.

“Power drives” that are flat and fast became fun once I got into the habit of controlling the power.

This racket has loads of power and it’s easy to instill even on drives or other slightly softer shots if you can react fast enough. The problem is not generating power, but controlling the shot, so as to play it more precisely rather than going 100% power.

That turns out to suit my habits well. It allows me to focus more on where to place the shuttle, and what my opponents are doing, as opposed to also having to think about the technique in the heat of the moment.

I often found this extra power helpful to get shots over the net from the midcourt when I’m tired. But at the same time, I also found it easy to give just a bit too much power and turn them into these weird middle-of-the-road shots your opponent can easily kill if they are quick.

This racket is a good choice for intermediate players who love power, especially when you consider its price.

It’s not just a breeze to play with as you’ll often find yourself a sitting duck on middle-of-the-road shots you managed to get over the net and otherwise might not have with a less powerful racket.

To be fair, that can also be tricky with other power-based rackets.

In fact, there are so many similar rackets with loads of power for intermediate players that it’s hard to stand out.

While making this Astrox 88D Game review, I found it feeling slightly forgettable in the sea of similar ones. It’s not worth the wait if you’re looking for a new racket and unable to get it.

Below I’ll compare it directly with other similar rackets.

If I had to say something positive and negative about Yonex Astrox 88D Game

This racket’s power makes it fun to play with and handy when you get tired or are late to the shuttle.

Among many similar rackets, this one feels forgettable.

Yonex Astrox 88D Game: the verdict

as 88d tour

The Astrox 88D Game is a powerful racket for intermediate players. That strength also makes it more difficult to control on soft, tight, shots around the net. Playing with it feels like a good, classic smash-prone racket but it doesn’t stand out among many other similar ones. Overall, it’s good value for money.

Recommended strings

Next, I’ll give suggestions as to who will be a good fit for this racket.

The ideal player type

The ideal player type is the rearcourt intermediate player who likes power (and a lot of it). If that’s you and you want extra power beyond what you can generate with raw technique, you will likely enjoy playing with this racket.

You can make this racket work at the front court too, but it requires tight control, and the racket feels better suited for power shots from the back.

The non-ideal player type (you might not like this racket if…)

If you prefer working the front court, you’ll likely feel that this racket has too much power to perform controlled shots to truly put your opponents under pressure.

Let’s look at how the Astrox 88D Game stacks up against other, similar, rackets.

Astrox 88D Game vs. Play, Tour, Pro

The original Yonex Astrox 88D got an overhaul a few years ago and turned into a sub-series of four rackets.

The Astrox 88D Play model is intended for beginners, the Game for intermediates, and the Tour and Pro for advanced and professional players, mainly due to the stiffness of each of the rackets.

I was especially interested in trying this racket as the 88D Pro is so popular, but I knew it would be too stiff for me to work with hence why I chose the Game model.

Astrox 88D Game vs. Astrox 100 Game

Having both rackets available, I brought them both to court at the same time in order to compare them directly.

At first glance, the Astrox 88D Game seems similar to the Astrox 100 Game, especially when comparing the specs.

Playing with them was a different experience though. The Astrox 100 Game felt faster, smoother, and more powerful while the stiffness felt to be about the same.

Astrox 100 Game felt like a ninja sword that slices through the air faster and with less resistance, whereas the 88D Game felt slightly heavier and more like a classic power racket.

I especially noticed that on clears and lifts. I often hit flat attacking clears out of the court with the 88D Game, but even more so with the 100 Game. It feels like everything was beefed up on the latter.

Since my technique is decent but has a lot of room for improvement, the 88D Game took some getting used to, compared to the full-on power machine, and simplicity of the 100 Game.

Ultimately, the 100 Game felt easier and more pleasant to play with as I could focus on just one thing: controlling the power in my shots.

Compare that to the 88D Game which felt more nuanced, where I had to hold back power on some shots while increasing it on others.

That the 88D Game feels slightly less powerful is nice on flat drives, as it’s easier to find the right level of power.

On another note, rumor has it that the 88D Game is being phased out of the market. I don’t know whether it’s true or not, so take it with a grain of salt.

It makes sense, though.

There isn’t much need for the 88D Game in the market as there are so many similar choices.

At the same time, the marketing for the 100 Game seems easier as it’s the intermediate version of Viktor Axelsen’s racket, and he is dominating his category at the time of writing this.

On the other hand, the 88D series is promoted primarily by the doubles pair, “The Minions”, Kevin Sukamuljo, and Marcus Gideon. They are currently ranked number 18 in the world but haven’t played lately due to illness .

Astrox 88D Game vs. Arcsaber 11 Play

The Astrox 88D Game and Yonex’s Arcsaber 11 Play are two different types of rackets. The Arcsaber 11 Play is evenly balanced, good all around, and built with a focus on precision and control.

Counterintuitive to what Yonex’s catalog suggests, the Arcsaber 11 Play feels almost as stiff as the 88D Game, but smoother near the net and on drives. Power still feels decent with this racket although it’s no match for the 88D Game.

I had to be mindful of not just hammering to the shuttle unless smashing, whereas the Arcsaber 11 Play allowed me to be less controlled in power and go all-in – something that’s simpler and easier to remember in the heat of the moment.

The 88D Game felt easier to play with in the backcourt, but harder at the frontcourt than the Arcsaber 11 Play.

Yonex Astrox 88 Racket Series: Picking the Right One for You

The Yonex Astrox 88 rackets have been the racket of choice for many professional players, including World #1 Men's Doubles, Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo. These rackets are divided into two types, the Skill (S) and Dominate (D) series designed for your playstyle. Recently, Yonex has also launched the Pro versions of these rackets, the Yonex Astrox 88S Pro and Yonex Astrox 88D Pro. In this post, we will take a look at the Yonex Astrox 88 Racket Series and help you decide which one is right for you!

Yonex Astrox 88 Badminton Rackets at Badminton Warehouse

High Level Comparisons

Grip & shaft length.

The biggest difference between the original Yonex Astrox 88 rackets and the new pro version is the length of the grip and the shaft. The new pro versions have a longer grip and a shorter shaft, to allow players to have greater control of their shots.

The intention of this was to allow players to have quicker reactions in the front court due to the shorter shaft.

Racket Speed

The shorter shaft of the Yonex Astrox 88 Pro rackets allows players to have a quicker swing speed and an easier time manipulating the racket in defense. It also makes it much easier to have a quicker reaction in the front court, allowing you to cut off quick shots and play more skill shots at the front court.

On the other hand, the longer shaft of the original Yonex Astrox 88 makes it easier to hit overhead power shots without having to add a lot of power on your own.

Head Weight

The Pro version of the rackets have a much lighter head feel, making it easy to manipulate and keep your racket up on the court. This allows doubles players to have an easier time controlling the front court and hitting the shots down.

Which is Right For Me?

It may be a tough decision to pick between any of these 4 great rackets, but our intention at BadmintonWarehouse is to make this choice easy for you. Let's take a look at each of these rackets individually and see which one may fit your playstyle!

Yonex Astrox 88S Pro

This racket was built to shine for doubles players in the front court! If you are a player with good front court touch or want to play a quicker game in doubles, this racket may just be for you! With a shorter shaft, it's much easier to hit quick spin net drops, pushes, and kills in the front court.

If you already own the Yonex Astrox 88S and are looking to make an upgrade, we highly recommend giving this racket a try. If you are completely new to the Yonex Astrox 88 Series, the Yonex Astrox 88S Pro is a great place to start.

Pick one up here:  Yonex Astrox 88S Pro

Yonex Astrox 88D Pro

This racket was built for attacking players who wanted an easier time moving the racket around in the mid and back court. Overhead swings are much quicker and mid-court drives have much more maneuverability. On the defensive end, it is also much more reliable as the improved head speed helps us recover from dangerous situations.

If you are coming from the Yonex Astrox 88D, this racket may feel a little weaker overhead due to the faster racket speed. However, we are confident that this racket still delivers heavy shots and the quicker head speed provides many more benefits across all aspects of the court. We also consider this to be an upgrade to the original Yonex Astrox 88D racket!

Yonex Astrox 88S

Kevin Sanjaya's racket of choice, this racket has been a staple in many pro players' equipment bags for the past few years. The racket is extremely quick and lets you play to your own skill, using its light frame to help you hit tight net drops, pushes, and cutoffs. This was made originally for doubles players, but many singles players such as Viktor Axelsen use this racket as well.

This racket has been time tested and proven to work for all skill levels, from beginners to the top professionals around the world. If you are looking for a reliable racket for a skill type player, be sure to check out the Yonex Astrox 88S.

Get the original Astrox here: Yonex Astrox 88S

Yonex Astrox 88D

D stands for dominance and like its name suggests, this racket was designed for players who focus a bit more on their power shots than their skill shots. Compared to the S version above, it is slightly lacking in its performance in skill shots like net drops as well as its quickness in defensive shots. However, it makes up for this with its longer length allowing you to generate much more power in your smashes.

This racket has also been time tested and proven to work for players in all skill levels. Particularly for power players, if you are looking for a racket to improve your game, don't hesitate on picking up the Yonex Astrox 88D!

Yonex Astrox 88 Series Recap

The Yonex Astrox 88 Badminton Racket Series is extremely versatile and can fit players of all skill levels and types. There are certainly differences between each racket, but we at BadmintonWarehouse believe that you won't go wrong with any one of them. If none of these seem like a good fit, we recommend checking out the Yonex Astrox 100 ZZ Racket as well — one of our personal favorites!

The Yonex Astrox 88D Tour Racket is the little brother of the 88D Pro, slightly toned down to make it more user-friendly whilst still suitable for advanced players. Sporting a brand-new black and silver colourway and game-changing technology, the 88D Tour is an incredible racket for defensive players who enjoy playing from the back of the court.

The 88D excels in backcourt play, being a robust and stable racket designed with power in mind. This racket was manufactured to enhance smashing power to dominate your opponents on the court, whilst its stability weight distribution technology keeps shots controlled and precise while boosting your power. The 4U weight (approx. 83 grams) of this racket makes it much more user-friendly and responsive, whilst still packing a powerful punch and being incredibly well-rounded.

Several technologies are featured in this racket, coming together to make it a true powerhouse on the court. For players who like splitting their opponent's defense open from the back of the court, this 88D Tour is a must-have.

AERO+ Box Frame : Smoother contours throughout the racquet head for less wind resistance and extra racquet speed, combined with the stability of a box frame.

ISOMETRIC : Developed over 30 years ago, the ISOMETRIC design increases the sweet spot by 7%. Compared to a conventional round frame, a square-shaped ISOMETRIC racquet generates a larger sweet spot by optimizing the intersection of the main and cross strings.

Rotational Generator System + 2G-Namd Flex Force : By applying the counterbalance theory, weight is carefully distributed throughout the grip end, frame top, and joint, enabling a smooth transition between powerful shots for rapid, successive attacks. The innovative graphite “2G-NamdTM Flex Force” used in the shaft, characterized by its quick flex and snapback, maximizes shot power and advances the performance of the Rotational Generator System.

Stability Weight Distribution :   The added weight distribution on the sides of the frame enhances stability during the swing, resulting in maximized smash power and allowing for the effective breakdown of defenses during back-court attacks.

REXIS Shaft : A high-performance shaft precisely designed with an original Yonex molding technique. Improves shot performance and dominates the game.

Ultra Slim Shaft : Inserting NANOPREME into the racket shaft ensures greater stability compared to conventional rackets. When bending and releasing two racquets under the same force, the Ultra Slim Long Shaft rebounds almost twice as far as a conventional racquet does in the same length of time (0.018 seconds). This equates to 10% greater stability compared with conventional racquets.

Energy Boost CAP PLUS : A uniquely shaped cap that maximizes shaft performance. The front allows the shaft to flex, while the side arch-shaped curve stabilizes the racquet face by preventing the shaft from twisting.

Power Assister Bumper : Attached to enforce heavier, increased power by configuring the weight directed into the shuttlecock with a tungsten-infused nylon bumper.

Badminton Rackets Buying Guide

The key question to ask firstly is what style of player are you, or what type of player do you want to become?

  • Power Attacking
  • Fast Reactions to Rallies
  • Control and Touch, by moving players around the court to create space

As a general guide for your playing style below is the kind of racket you'll want to look at purchasing:

In simple terms is means this: Player with Explosive Backswing Hitting = Stiffer Shaft needed as it'll unload faster for more power. Player with Slower Backswing Hitting = More Flexible Shaft needed so that it'll unload fully at impact.

If you're still unsure what to choose for yourself, we'd recommend going for a medium flex badminton racket to minimise the chances of choosing incorrectly what's right for you.

Weight can make a real difference to reaction speeds, and power behind the hit of a shuttle. Too light a racket and it won't go far or powerful enough. However too heavy a racket and you'll find you'll be reacting too slow in fast flat rallies, where reaction speed is everything.:

Most rackets are weighted around 3U (85-89g) or 4U (80-84g), this is because it's a good weight balance for players to hit hard and also be able to react fast too.:

Typically singles players will use heavier rackets 3U (85-89g), this provides the player with more stability and accuracy, with a little more weight for power behind it, without compromising on racket speed too much, as quick racket head speed isn't needed as much in the singles game:

Doubles players however will usually want lighter rackets, the most popular weight for this being 4U (80-84g), this is because the Badminton Racket will offer more speed and quicker reactions in around the net and for defence against smashes.:

Racket Strings Used & Tension:

Again like the grip, this is customisable on any racket. However do look out for racket tension ranges on the product as this could potentially limit your ability to have the racket strung at a desired tension.:

For a full breakdown on strings and tensions, see our buying guide specifically on this.:

To put it simply however, if you're unsure what to choose when buying a racket you like, either go for the “Original Strings” option or “Stringers Professional Decision” for which we'll choose the string that best suits getting the maximum performance out of the racket for you.:

Performance Enhanced: ASTROX 88 S/D PRO

Badminton - January 7, 2021

The popular doubles-concept racquets, ASTROX 88 S and ASTROX 88 D, will be reintroduced in March 2021 with new innovations and materials crafted in for enhanced performance. ASTROX 88 S PRO and ASTROX 88 D PRO are designed to complement the evolving, faster style of doubles play, which requires even faster takebacks for continuous powerful attack shots. The release of the PRO will be accompanied by affordable models ASTROX 88S/D TOUR and GAME, designed and crafted with the same performance concept.

New advancements are made through the introduction of the VOLUME CUT RESIN, a groundbreaking resin that provides powerful adhesion with less material and weight. This resin is highly versatile in that it can increase durability and strength or reduce weight without compromising strength.

The ASTROX series are distinguished by the Rotational Generator System , our intricate weight distribution technology designed with the counterbalance theory that allows head-heavy racquets to recover faster between shots. By employing the VOLUME CUT RESIN, the new 88 S/D models have a further refined Rotational Generator System where intricate weight distribution can be taken to the next level.

Improvements *1 from the VOLUME CUT RESIN can also be seen in the frame and grommets. The frame structure is evolved with a larger sweet spot made possible by the strength-reinforced Isometric head shape. The grommets are improved with a new pattern that uses larger, strategically-placed grommets, a technology that allows more string movement at impact and ultimately increasing shuttle hold for assertive shot-making. The 88 S models, designed for front-court players, will have longer shuttle hold for precise net control and the 88 D models, designed for back-court players, will balance repulsion and shuttle hold for maximum power.

The ASTROX 88 S PRO and ASTROX 88 D PRO are set to debut on court in March by players such as men’s doubles world no.1 Kevin S. Sukamuljo and Marcus F. Gideon, and women’s doubles world no. 2 Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Hirota *2 .

*1 Some technologies are not applied to the TOUR or GAME models. *2 BWF World Ranking as of Jan. 5, 2021.

Very jealous of you guys who are able to be playing on the court with it whilst we still have to wait a while longer before able to get back onto court! In the meantime, here's my first look and mini review:

Follow up video to my original mini review and here's the full review of the Yonex Astrox 88S and D Pro!!

Budi said: ↑ Does 88D Tour are a big mistake made by Yonex? Till now i can find 88S tour everywhere but none sell 88D Tour. For 88S pro that having less hole makes it different from 88S Tour. But 88D case is that Tour Series are not much different, so kinda if they sell 88D Tour, the Pro selling would drop alot. Click to expand...

88D Pro Tour available somewhere https://www.ycsports.com/Badminton/..._Rackets/YONEX_ASTROX_88D_TOUR_CAMEL_GOLD_4U5 https://www.badmintonplanet.eu/yonex-astrox-88d-tour
Yeah should be near to release, been a while since 88s game and tour released though. since astrox 100 game and tour is going to release soon as well, 88d game and tour should be released earlier than them

Had a chance to test the 88 S and D Pros recently - my preference was definitely with the 88 S - a very quick frame and the feel of the shuttle on the strings felt very different be the original. I jotted a few notes on my blog here for those who are interested. The review of the D will follow. interesting to watch CK’s review above as concur with a lot of his points https://www.badmintonhub.co.uk/post/yonex-astrox-88-s-pro-review
Short video this time round but further updates to the rackets and I'm comparing the previous generation of Astrox 88S and D to the current Pro models.

Has anyone managed to try both the Pro and Tour model? On paper the Tour is missing out the New T-joint and Solid Feel Core (both of which are usually absent on Yonex MIT models). Would be interesting to find out especially with the Tour model coming at 60% the price.

just got and tried astrox 88d pro, I really like it. I have been playing with zforce 2 for a while and zforce 2 is a hammer compared to 88d pro. It felt very nice , i paired it with exbolt 63 at 28lbs. smashes were not as hard as zforce 2 but the overall package it was muich better to control and monouver. Really enjoyed the first session with it. Hope i dont break it like my astrox 99 touch wood.

It also has a half-recessed frame profile compared to a fully-recessed frame profile on the other two higher-end models.

The Astrox 88D Play model is intended for beginners, the Game for intermediates, and the Tour and Pro for advanced and professional players, mainly due to the stiffness of each of the rackets.
