Tour Details
Sacred Valley ATV Tour to Maras and Moray is one of the popular half day tours in Cusco. We highly recommend you to experience this on your first days in Cusco, while acclimatising. Apart from offering enchanting views of the Sacred Valley and around Cusco, the quad bike tour also gives you an introduction to Inca civilization.
It is easier riding the ATVs on a downhill road with absolutely no prior experience. Our tour guide will also be giving you a short training before the tour. All our Quad Bikes are in excellent condition and are frequently serviced.
The tour starts with a downhill ride to Maras Salt Mines and continues to Moray.
Maras Salt Mines have been significant since the pre Inca era. They are nestled on the slope of a hill. These salt puddles are geometric shaped. The salt farmers let in the natural spring water and wait for it to evaporate. When it evaporates it leaves behind crystals of salt which is manually scrapped out.
This is a traditional method that has been practised since pre Inca era. It is passed down from generation to generation.
The salt of Maras is pink in colour and has a distinct taste. It is very nutritious as the extraction process does not involve any chemical use. Locals say that once if you taste the salt of Maras you won’t be liking the regular salt ever after.
Moray is home to farming terraces. They are circular and barely resemble the Roman amphitheatre. These terraces have different levels dug into the ground. Each of these levels have a different temperature. There is a difference of 15 degrees celsius from the top to the bottom of the terrace.
To Incas this was like an agricultural laboratory. They experimented with the growth conditions of crops here. Thanks to that, Peru now produces over 800 varieties of Potatoes and some 5 different types of corn.
At Machu Picchu Amazon Peru, we have dedicated guides who have an extensive knowledge about the culture. We maintain high safety standards. All our guides are trained on first aid and using oxygen cans.

You will then be walking along the puddles. It also gives you the opportunity to see and interact with the salt farmers.
We will then continue the tour to Moray. Here you will understand the prominence of farming in today’s life. Our guide will also be sharing some insights that only a handful of locals know about.

ITINERARY SACRED VALLEY ATV TOUR
Andes tour through maras & moray in atv.
The off-road vehicle is a Honda ATV TRX 250, powerful outdoor adventure equipment. We carry out the Sacred Valley ATV tourist circuit from Cruzpata to Moray, which has impressive panoramic views. The high plateau of Moray Maras is known as the balcony of the Sacred Valley for having beautiful views of the Andes Mountain range with its eternal snow-capped mountains plus valleys and ravines.
We start the trip from the city of Cusco at 07:40 towards the northwest via POROY to reach CHINCHERO . The vehicle leaves us in one of the TEXTILE CENTERS OF CHINCHERO to visit it and learn a little about the Inca culture. Organized families from different areas of Chinchero: They offer us a fresh coca leaf mate to adapt to the altitude.
The Chincherinas families organically explain the elaboration of textiles. We continue the visit with the ruins of Chinchero, where several Inca walls of excellent texture can be seen joined together as a polishing system. Chinchero is the royal house of the ninth Inca ruler and a plant experimentation site. We return to our vehicle to the RAQCHI viewpoint to have unique views of the Sacred Valley and then continue the trip to the CRUZ PATA ATV BASE.
START THE ATV TOUR
The tour experience takes about 45 minutes to drive the ATVs from CRUZPATA to MORAY, and back to the BASE is the same travel time. The last visit is to the Salineras of Maras. We do it in our vehicle because it is FORBIDDEN TO DRIVE ATVs in the Salineras area. After all, there are cliffs, so it is off-limits for the safety of every visitor.
Didactic explanation of off-road machines
- The ATVs are Honda TRX 250 , robust for all-terrain and complex of the Sacred Valley, Maras, Moray, the Huaypo Lagoon, etc.
- You have a small throttle lever on the right-hand side rudder that works by pressing your thumb; there is also the handbrake.
- The button changes from the first to the fifth, shown on the handle on the left side.
- We have a small practice circuit for driving ATVs before starting the tour of the Andes. The trail has holes, slopes, etc., to adapt to the Maras Moray ATV tourist circuit.
Make your visit to the Sacred Valley an adventure with a fun-filled ATV Tour! See famous sacred sites like Moray, Chinchero, Maras, and more from behind the wheel of an ATV as you explore.
WHAT NOT TO DO WHEN RIDING YOUR ATV MORAY TOUR?
- While riding the ATV, you must wear a safety helmet.
- Please do not put your leg(s) on the ATV while it is in motion.
- Do not perform risky maneuvers when driving Quads.
- Stay on the right side of the trail or dirt road.
- Do not operate your machine with one hand!
- Do not take photos or videos while driving. If you are going to take pictures or film videos, you must bring an adapter to put your GoPro on your chest, helmet, or hooks to place them somewhere on the ATV.
- Slow down on ALL CURVES and turn slowly through curves.
- There are hills between ups and downs in different tour sections, so keep an eye on the trail and follow the directions of your local ATV guide and tour guide.
- Do not accelerate too much or try to run; adventure is about enjoying the outdoors without accidents.
NOTE: We carry out this and other actions for the safety of each visitor to the Maras Moray ATV tourist circuit . If there is an accident, we have our private vehicle at the ATV BASE. We immediately call the car to assist the explorer or go directly to the hospital, depending on the severity of the case. Avoid any accident; driving defensively and thus enjoying the Cusco ATV tour and having a unique experience in the Peruvian Andes is better .

Sacred Valley ATV Tour is the best half day adventure experience in Sacred Valley of Incas. The ATV Maras Moray tour is best to experience while you are acclimating in Cusco. Accompanied by our local English speaking tour guide, you will discover many lesser known facts about the archaeological sites of the two iconic tourist destinations on this ATV tour to Moray Maras and Salt Flat.
Both Maras and Moray played an important role during the Inca civilization.
Maras Salt Flats have been in use since Pre Inca times. It has been passed down in the line of succession. Farmers in the town of Maras, continue to practise the traditional salt farming method as their ancestors.
They let in the natural spring water into the geometric shaped salt puddles and wait for it to evaporate. It then leaves behind crystals of salt which they scrape out manually.
The circular farming terraces of Moray are quite distinct. It has different levels dug into the ground. Each of these levels have different temperature zones. The Incas used it to experiment the growth conditions of crops. Thanks to this, Peru now produces over 800 different varieties of potatoes among other crops.

Sacred Valley ATV Tour
We will begin the experience with a pickup from your hotel in Cusco. If you are not staying within the historic centre of Cusco, we will be picking you up at a meeting point. Then we will be driving you to Cruz Pata where the Quad Bike experience begins. Here our local expert will be sharing some safety tips before we begin the experience.
Then we will start cruising down the hill through the beautiful countryside to Maras. Here our guide will give you a detailed tour of the complex. To prevent contamination at the site, authorities now restrict visitors from getting closer to the salt flats. However, you will be able to get a panoramic view from the viewpoint.
Once you have had your fill of this beautiful site, we will continue the Sacred Valley ATV Tour to Moray.
Moray is home to circular agricultural terraces. They are dug into the ground with different levels. It resembles the Roman Amphitheatre. Here our guide will be sharing some insights on how these terraces were used by Incas to experiment the growth condition of crops.
After the great experience, we will be riding back to Cruz Pata. Here we will be meeting our driver for our journey back to Cusco City .
Can you get ATV from Maras Moray?
No, it is not possible to get an ATV from Maras Moray. Most tour companies store their Quad Bikes in Chinchero. The experience begins at Cruzpata which is a few miles away from Chinchero. The tour operators bring just the required number of ATVs to the starting point.

Ray was our Tour Guide and Alfredo was our driver for a 4 day tour we did with SAM Travel Peru. Ray's knowledge of the history of Cusco and Machu Picchu was outstanding. Ray was very accommodating with all our needs. He stayed alongside us when trekking and helped where he could. His sense of humour was pleasant to be around. Ray spoke very good English. He is such a nice guy. I would strongly recommend Ray to be your tour guide to visit Machu Picchu. Ray explained everyday what the plans were for the next day, which was reassuring what we needed to take etc
Our 1 day tour thru the Sacred Vally with Danny was wonderful. He was very knowledgeable and able to answer all our questions in detail. I would recommend asking for him personally if you are able.
We booked the Classic Cusco to Machu Picchu tour with SAM travel which we really had a good experience. SAM travel is very responsive during the communication and cater to our changes needed. Our guide is Ray who is also an very awesome guide. He is knowledgeable, patient, humorous as well reliable, he help us take many good photos and also go extra mile to help with our request. Thanks Ray! Thanks SAM travel that gave us good memories in Peru! Highly recommend if you consider booking any tour in Cusco.

Wow. We had such an incredible experience in Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. Our guide, Dayvit, is the most knowledgeable guide we have ever had. He has such an extensive knowledge of the history and is very friendly and helpful. If you are planning a trip to Peru, I highly recommend SAM travel and be sure to request Dayvit!
2 day tour sacred valley / Machu Picchu highly recommend! David was the best tour guide. He knows an incredible amount about Incan culture and is personable and funny. He also kept us up to date on a political situation happening when we were there and was informative. Overall, this tour checks all the boxes. Thank you!
We used SAM Travel for a 2D/1N trip from Cusco to Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu on Dec 25-26, 2022. The team was good with communication from the start - both Saul and Junior were very helpful and professional with answering any questions and clearing up any misunderstandings. Our guide, Miguel, was prompt, pleasant, and quite knowledgeable. We enjoyed his company and insight over the 2 day trip and recommend him to anyone booking with SAM Travel.

My wife and I just completed two excursions with SAM Travel Peru and we absolutely loved them. We did the 4 Day Salkantay Wilderness + Machu Picchu and then the 2-Day Rainbow Mountain + 7 Lakes trek with guide Carlos Estrada, chefs Nerio & Lucio, and horseman Unarato. Over the last 6 days we have learned so much about the Inca culture, discovered some of the most incredible sights, and ate delicious food every step of the way. We would definitely recommend SAM Travel (especially with Carlos!) to anyone that wants an incredible Peruvian adventure. The Wilderness trek is a much quieter trail than the standard Salkantay and goes a bit higher elevation, but camping at the base of Salkantay was incredible. Carlos's guided tour through Machu Picchu was so informative. We would have missed so much without him taking the time to share his knowledge.
Big thanks to David he was an amazing tour guide who really cared for our group. He allowed us to go at our own pace and was a brilliant photographer He was really funny and is full of interesting information & his passion for his inca ancestors is very obvious and warming. He also brought us to great restaurants! This company are very good and from what I can recall were cheaper than most. Thank you!
They took care of everything! Saul the owner is very responsive and helpful. Johnny our guide was fantastic, as were our chef, assistant chef and horsemen. I can’t recommend them highly enough and will definitely use them again if we return to Peru!
Three of us decided to choose Sam Travel Peru, reason being is it is a local travel company that help indegenious communities. We picked Lares Trek 4D3N to have cultural experience while hiking. Good foods provided by talented Mario Chef! Johnny is our tour guide, very helpful tour guide. He even helped me to carry my daypack as I was too exhausted to carry it on day 1 hiking. Strongly recommend to those like to have local experience while hiking.

SACRED VALLEY + ATV TOUR (Pisac + Moray + Maras + Ollantaytambo)

10/10 Amazing experience
If you’re thinking about which agency to use, look no further- Ray and Jimmy went well above and beyond and made this a memorable, safe, fun, and professional experience.
Ray is the most knowledgeable guide I’ve ever had in any country for any excursion - during both the Short Inka Trail and the actual tour of Machu Picchu, Ray’s expertise shined through in his ability to give us a detailed background on every aspect of the history, climate, nature, flora, animals.. anything!
Likewise, Ray and Jimmy were truly the friendliest, kindest hosts that I could have imagined our group having.
Thank you both so much and I will definitely book with you again if (when) I come back!
Awesome experience!!
Did the 2 day Inca trail with Ray and Jimmy they were great and knowledgeable. Ray not only guided us along trail to Machu Picchu but also was an excellent photographer and taught us the history. It was a group of 10 and we had a great time. Even everything going on in Peru, we always felt in good hands.
Short Inca Trial (2-Day)
This tour was the perfect experience for our (group of 10) short trip to Peru. The trail was sometimes challenging, but the views and history made it all worth it. Ray and Jimmy were our guides and imparted sooo much knowledge about the history of Peru, Inca, and beyond. I would definitely recommend!
Daniela Rabito
It was perfect! On the first day we had a great time exploring the Sacred Valley and see the main attractions and learn about the history of this beautiful place.
I would definitely recommend the short Inka trail, I think it was the best way to get to know Machu Picchu and the surrounding area. We arrived at Machu Picchu when most of the crowd was gone and it felt really special.
Brittany Skulkety
You won’t regret booking with this tour company, especially if Liz Montesinos is your guide. My boyfriend and I did the 4 day Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu and Rainbow Mountain (private) tour. The tour covered everything; from transportation, hotels, meals, tickets and entrance fees, to stops at local places we would’ve never known to go or check out. We did a private tour because for us we felt this would help us get the most out of our time and experience in Peru
Best mix of adventure, history and nature: Sacred Valley & Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu
4-day trekking option seemed too intense for us, but we still wanted to experience the entrance to Machu Picchu through the ancient Inka trail, so we opted for Orange Nation’s combination of Sacred Valley & Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. I couldn’t be more happy about our decision.
We booked and paid the deposit to Orange Nation / Sam travel for the 4 day Inca Trail and Machu Pichu trip back in 2019. But we couldn't travel in 2020 and 2021 - but the company honoured our agreement and so we came back in 2022.

My girl and i did the Machu Pichu trek tour with Orange Nation. It was seriously the most amazing experience that we'll never forget. Gorgeous views! The long trek was worth the amazing view. The tour guide was friendly and very knowledgeable. We considered other tours but chose Orange Nation because we liked the idea of smaller groups and this was definitely worth it. I will be using Orange Nation again next year when I come back to Peru!

Wow, what a wonderful trekking experience! My trip to Peru was amazing thanks to this awesome tour that i took with Orange Nation. I did multiple tours with this company. I'm a solo traveler and everyone in my group was always still friendly and did not make me feel left out. I loved going off the beaten track with this company. It's much better to pay extra to go off the path for the quality experience of this amazing guided tour They definitely helped guide us and gave us a quality experience with a small group and paid special attention to each one of us. I highly recommend using Orange Nation for your next tour in Peru!

Day 1: Pisac + Maras + Moray + Ollantaytambo + Cusco
We start this beautiful day at 7:00am, when your guide picks you up at your Cusco hotel in our private van. Our route to the Sacred Valley of the Incas leads us towards Pisac. We stop first at the Mirador of Taray to enjoy an expansive view of the Urubamba valley and its traditional farming villages. You will see how the agriculture in the Sacred Valley has changed little in the past five hundred years.
Onward, we drive to the archeological site of Pisac, where you visit an impressive Inca cemetery with more than 2,000 tombs. There, we admire the carefully engineered farming terraces carved into the mountain, explore the Inca tunnel and the religious area of this important citadel. Then, we head down to the colorful market of Pisac, spend about 20 minutes visiting it and then drive to Urubamba for lunch.
On our way to the ATV camp, our guide covers the correct use of the ATVs so we are ready to get going on our way to the Salt Mines. There we explore the incredible salt mines of Maras with our guide. A natural spring at the top of the valley discharges a small stream of water heavily laden with salt, which is diverted into saltpans and evaporated to produce a pink salt that is of very high quality just as the Incas have done for centuries.
Back to our ATVs, we are on our way to the archaeological site of Moray which is an agricultural laboratory from the Inca time, where they created various micro-climates for growing food. After our guided tour of this incredibly unique site, we are on our ATVs on our way through the Maras Moray area back to the ATV camp. There we leave them behind and are on our way to Ollantaytambo, our last stop.
Finally, we drive to Ollantaytambo by van leaving the ATV´s behind. There we take time to explore the Inca village that has remained intact since Inca times and the massive Inca Ruins with our tour guide and the massive architecture of the Sun Temple at the top of the formidable terraces. Our guide explains the importance of this site for the Incas during the beginning of the Spanish conquest.
After our tour ends in Ollantaytambo, we drive you back to Cusco arriving around 6:30pm.

Our porters personify hard work. We employ about 90 porters from local communities. They are mostly farmers by trade and are native Quechua speakers. They mainly come from the indigenous communities around the trail. We refer to our super porters as ¨Red Machine¨. This is because they work hard during the treks but carrying duffel bags, camping gear, and more! It is important to us that we employ porters from local villages because we are supporting them to become self-efficient and helping communities grow their economy to better the quality of lives.
We provide the following items to our porters and cooks for free: Working insurance, Jacket, sun hat, warm hat, t-shirt, pants, hiking boots, comfortable duffle bags, canteen, girdle for protecting their spine, sleeping bags, mattress.

This fast-paced tour takes you to some the Sacred Valley’s most interesting archeological sites. The ATV bikes are fun and easy to use, and allow visitors to cover a lot of scenic territory in the course of an afternoon.
Your tour begins with a pickup at your Sacred Valley hotel. After you collect your ATV bikes, your guide will tell you everything you need to know about operating the bikes. You’ll also be provided with a helmet and safety instructions.
After you set out, you’ll soon arrive at the banks of the glassy Huaypo Lake. This is one of the Sacred Valley’s most scenic bodies of water. From there, you’ll continue to the nearby town of Maras. Maras has a striking patchwork of salt mines on one of its slopes. The tour concludes at Moray archeological site, which consists of a series of concentric circles built into a depression. Historians believe this site is evidence of the Inca’s advanced agricultural know-how.
Once you've returned the ATVs, you'll be transported back to your hotel. All in all, the tour takes about 4 hours.

Sacred Valley ATV Tour: A fast-paced adventure tour
It was bright and sunny as I left El Balcon Hotel and headed to the Willka Travel office a few blocks away. It was 2 days before my Salkantay Trek adventure and I had a need for speed! I have driven an ATV maybe 3 times in my life and each time was an absolute blast! I was excited, to say the least. The Sacred Valley ATV tour had a total of 12 people, including myself. Active tours like this that have more than 15 people usually become a bit of a cluster, so I was so happy to find this small group for my day trip from Cusco .

After a 45-minute bus ride through the Sacred Valley, we arrived at a small farmhouse. The ATVs were parked in the driveway, where we received a safety briefing and were taught how to operate the machines. For riding the ATVs I recommend adding a pair of jeans to your Peru packing list . We got some practice time going up and down the street turning and changing gears. I won’t lie, I didn’t do great, but it could have been worse.
Then we were off! The scenery was exquisite with the mountains frost-covered in the distance, yet we were surrounded by farms and sunshine. Dust was flying and the wind was in my face. For me I was going fast, but the speedometer told me I was only going 30 KPH.
ATVing in the Sacred Valley: Maras Salt Mines
After a short drive, we arrived at a parking area where we left the ATVs and boarded a bus. I was under the impression we would be driving ourselves directly, if not close, to the Maras Salt Mines. Our guides informed us that ATVs are no longer allowed on the road to the entrance of the Salt Mines. This was a bit of a bummer, as I was excited to spend time outdoors. Luckily, the ride wasn’t very long.

Upon arrival to the Salt Mines our guides gave us an overview of the area and information about the mines. The thousands of shallow pools were strategically dug into the mountainside. These pools are filled with saltwater and eventually evaporate and leave behind crystallized salt. The people of Maras have been mining salt like this for more than 500 years! We had a total of 25 minutes at the site with 15 of them open for exploring. I could have stayed much longer. However, there were so few people there, it was like we had it all to ourselves! Whether you go ATVing or not visiting Maras is a great addition to any Cusco, Peru itinerary .
Once we returned to the ATVs we were given a choice between going to Morays archeological site or a nearby lake. I chose to go to Morays, but all of the others wanted to go to the lake. Several said they were told they would only be going to the lake. A bit of a miscommunication, and as a result, I had to go with the group to the lake. It was disappointing. I feel that if you made sure you get to visit the other archeological site before you leave this would ensure it was one of the best ATV tours in Cusco .
Sacred Valley ATV Tour in Cusco Peru
As we left, several of the group members passed me because I was going too slow. I nearly stalled out going up a hill and caused a crash, so that was fun. I really didn’t think I was going to make it up the hill, but I did. And I almost hit a chicken that scurried out in the road! ATVing in the Sacred Valley was a bit of a challenge for me.
With a few rest stops and dusty roads we reached the lake. It was serene and peaceful. Frogs croaked from the edge of the water and birds with their bottoms up splashed while trying to catch a snack. There was even a litter of piglets sticking their snouts in the mud alongside their mom.
All in all the trip was amazing! I saw the Maras Salt Mines (which was the highlight of ATVing in the Sacred Valley for me!), the landscape was out of this world, and I didn’t even get a sunburn. I wish I had known beforehand that Morays was only an option and not guaranteed. If this is a sight you want to see I would discuss the tour with them and make it clear that you want to see this sight.
Things to know before ATVing in the Sacred Valley:
- The fee for the Salt Mines is not included in the cost of the tour. At the time of my visit is 10 soles. The same goes for the Morays archeological site, which costs 70 soles, but you can also use that ticket to get into other sites in the Sacred Valley and near Cusco.
- Bring lots of sunscreen, snacks, plenty of water, sunglasses and a buff or bandana. (for the dust)
- Depending on the location of your hotel – I was right around the corner from their office – there may or may not be a pick-up.
