passport on top of a planner

As the 2023 World Cup approaches, it’s important to ensure you have all the necessary documents for travel. If you plan on visiting Australia or New Zealand for the tournament, you must check the visa requirements and apply for one in advance.

In fact, New Zealand is recommending visitors to have applications submitted by end of April to avoid any processing concerns.

Note: if you’re flying through in-transit and not staying in either country, there may be applicable visas to consider as well.

Australia 🇦🇺

The Australian Department of Home Affairs website has all the details you need to know about obtaining a visa, including eligibility criteria and application procedures.

UPDATE (July 2023)

Australian Government has approved a “Temporary Activity” visa (subclass 408) for those traveling to the Women’s World Cup. This may only be applicable to certain countries who cannot get an eVisa or other visas as regularly and/or quickly if its citizens were not traveling for the World Cup.

Everyone should read through the details at the Australian Department of Home Affairs website to determine their best method of visa to enter/depart Australia based on their own citizenship. When all else fails, it does seem like this subclass 408 visa would be worthwhile application.

  • 90% of applications: 13 Days

Other Comments

How to Apply

  • Follow the steps outlined in this Australian government site.

New Zealand 🇳🇿

Similarly, New Zealand’s immigration website provides all the necessary information about visa requirements and how to apply for them. Be sure to check the specific requirements that apply to your country of origin.

Other Notes

In addition to visa requirements, it’s important to keep track of your World Cup ticket confirmation numbers. These numbers are available in your FIFA account and are also sent to you via email once a purchase is complete. While there’s nothing officially about needing these confirmation numbers in regards to a visa to either country, you never know if you’ll need them in the future so it is smart to ensure you are familiar with accessing this data.

For those who have attended previous World Cup tournaments, you know that accommodation and transportation are key considerations. With the tournament set to take place across multiple cities in two countries , it’s essential to plan ahead and book accommodation in each host city or a few cities you plan to base yourself in.

Australian Visa Information

Unless you are an Australian citizen, you will need a valid Australian visa to enter the country. New Zealand passport holders can apply for a visa upon arrival in the country. All other passport holders, regardless of age, must apply for a visa before leaving home. You can apply for a range of Australian visa types, including tourist visas and working holiday visas, via the ETA app or on the  Department of Home Affairs website.

There are different Australian visa types available for travellers to Australia. Knowing which Australian visa to apply for depends on the length of your stay, your passport and the purpose of your visit. You’ll also need to meet certain financial and medical requirements, be outside of Australia when applying and maintain health insurance for the duration of your stay.

Electronic Travel Authority visa  (subclass 601) This visa allows you to visit Australia as many times as you want, for up to a year, and stay for three months each visit. This visa is available to passport holders from a number of countries and regions, who live outside Australia. A step-by-step guide on how to apply is  here .

All ETA-eligible passport holders must apply for an ETA using the Australian ETA app. Agents can assist you in the application process, but you must be physically present as a live facial image is required.

eVisitor  (subclass 651) This is a free visa for multiple visits to Australia for tourism or business purposes for up to three months at a time within a 12-month period. This visa is available to passport holders from a number of European countries and it cannot be extended.

Visitor visa  (subclass 600) The Visitor visa allows you to visit Australia, either for tourism or business purposes. It is open to all nationalities. Generally, a period of stay of up to three months is granted, but up to 12 months may be granted in certain circumstances. Applicants will have to pay a fee to submit their application.

The application process may differ depending on which visa you need.

You can only apply for the  Electronic Travel Authority visa  (subclass 601) through the Australian ETA app. A step-by-step guide on how to apply is located  here .

For other visas, you can apply online by creating an ImmiAccount and completing the application process. Be sure to submit your application well in advance of your travel date to allow enough time for processing. You may be asked to provide further supporting information. You will be notified in writing if your tourist visa is approved and it will be digitally linked to your passport. For more information on different visa types, and Australian visa requirements including how to apply for an Australian visa, visit the  Department of Home Affairs  website.

If you are already in Australia and hold a valid Electronic Travel Authority visa (subclass 601) you can extend your stay by applying for another visa, such as a Visitor visa (subclass 600). An eVisitor (subclass 651) cannot be extended.

See the Department of Home Affairs website for details.

Working Holiday Visas

Australia's Working Holiday Maker program allows visitors aged under 30 (or 35 in certain cases) who hold a passport from a participating country to travel and work in Australia. Working holiday visas are valid for one year, or up to three years if you meet certain conditions.

How to attend the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 in Australia and New Zealand

Posted on March 15, 2023 | Last Updated on September 1, 2023

landscape of Sydney, Australia

The Women’s Soccer World Cup in New Zealand and Australia which is usually held in July and August is one of the most eagerly anticipated sporting events of the year.

The tournament, which runs from 20 July – 20 August, will see matches played in nine host cities, including Sydney, Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne and Brisbane Auckland, Dunedin, Wellington and Hamilton.

The tournament is shaping up to be the greatest women’s World Cup ever – with more teams than ever before. Thousands of football fans from around the world are expected to travel down under to catch a glimpse of the action!

If you’re planning a trip to Australia and New Zealand this year, it’s important to remember that you will need to organize your visa documents before you travel.

In this guide, we will outline what you need to know before booking your trip to the Women’s World Cup.

Is Ireland taking part in the Women’s World Cup?

Yes, Ireland is taking part in this year’s World Cup after a string of impressive qualifying results in 2022.

What makes the prospect even more exciting, however, is that Ireland face hosts Australia in the first game!

Ireland was drawn into Group B with the home nation and will also play Canada in Perth and Nigeria in Brisbane.

The opening day of the World Cup will see Ireland face off with Australia in Sydney, a potentially tricky tie with the Aussies ranked 13th in the FIFA World Rankings!

If the Girls in Green are lucky enough to reach the final, they’ll be playing in the 83,500-seater stadium of Stadium Australia in Sydney.

Who are favorites to lift the World Cup?

As with any international soccer competition, it would be foolish to rule any team out!

However, of all of the qualified Women’s world cup teams, there are a few favourites to keep an eye out for.

The most obvious choice would be the previous Women’s World Cup winner – the US Women’s National Team, especially following their recent successful CONCACAF Championship.

England’s Lionesses are also on an upward trajectory after lifting the Women’s UEFA Euro 2022 trophy.

Joint hosts Australia will also fancy their chances of going all the way too!

Ireland's Women's Soccer Team

How do I get match tickets to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup?

There is only one authorised sales channel for public tickets, and that is the official FIFA ticketing portal at FIFA.com/tickets.

If you are unlucky enough to not get your hands on tickets, don’t worry, there is still plenty of fun to be had.

The FIFA Fan Festival takes place across the nine Host Cities across Australia and New Zealand which offers fans an area to take in local entertainment, food, drink, culture, games, and much more!

What cities in Australia and New Zealand are hosting the Women’s World Cup 2023?

There are a total of nine different cities hosting the games – five in Australia and four in New Zealand.

In Australia, the five cities are: Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane – with two stadiums having matches in Sydney.

Meanwhile, in New Zealand, matches will take place in Auckland, Wellington, Dunedin, and Hamilton.

All games in group stage for Groups A, C, E, G will take place in New Zealand, while all group stage games for Groups B, D, F, H will take place in Australia.

When is the Women’s World Cup final?

The final of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup will be held on 20 August 2023.

The match will take place in the 82,000-seater Accor stadium in Sydney.

The stadium is in a great place within the city, and there will sure to be an awesome atmosphere on the day, as well as the days leading up to it!

The stadium is served by the Olympic Park Railway, so it should be easy to access.

How to get to New Zealand and Australia if you are traveling from Ireland?

There are no direct flights from Australia to Ireland and vice versa, so you will need to book a connecting flight for your travel.

Options for connecting flights from Ireland include London, Doha, and Dubai.

The route you will need to take will very much depend on the games you wish to see. Depending on what game you want to see, you will have an abundance of choices for your destination in Australia and New Zealand.

For example, Ireland’s first game is against Australia in the Accor Stadium in Sydney.

Ireland’s next game, six days later on 26 July, takes place in Perth’s Nib Stadium, before wrapping up the group stage on 31 July against Nigeria in the Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane.

New Zealand is also accessible from Europe via a connection through, for example Los Angeles or Dubai.

Auckland, Christchurch, and Wellington are the most popular airports in the country.

Visa to enhance experience for fans at first-ever cashless FIFA Women’s World Cup™

With the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™ set to establish new benchmarks both on and off the pitch in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand, FIFA, together with worldwide FIFA Women’s Football Partner, Visa, announced today the upcoming tournament will be the first-ever cashless FIFA World Cup™. Fans at the tournament will not only benefit from the speed, convenience and security of digital payments, but Visa cardholders will also receive new exclusive offers.

Host countries Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand are among the world's most advanced when it comes to digital payments and tapping to pay with card or phone is already common practice. In fact, the six Australia match stadiums already operate as cashless and 99% (Australia) and 96% (New Zealand) of face-to-face Visa transactions are contactless.

“Visa has provided immense support to the development of women’s football over many years and, once again, they will help to elevate the experience of supporters at the forthcoming FIFA Women’s World Cup,” said Sarai Bareman, FIFA Chief Women’s Football Officer.

Visa will provide Visa cardholders at the FIFA Women’s World Cup with the opportunity to access discounts, complimentary gifts, and exclusive Visa payment locations when they pay with Visa at the ten match stadiums and nine FIFA Fan Festival™ sites across Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. New Visa benefits include:

FIFA Retail + FIFA Fan Festival: Visa cardholders will receive a 10% discount on any purchase when they use Visa to pay, while Visa purchases over $140 AUD and $150 NZD will receive a complimentary gift, while supplies last.

Stadium Food + Beverage: Every Visa purchase comes with a FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™ Official Licensed Sticker, while supplies last.

Match Day Digital Card Art + NFT: At Stadium Australia, Visa will offer the first-ever Visa commemorative digital prepaid card in Australia. Eligible fans with an Australian phone number can purchase a Visa digital prepaid card that features card art from the match they are attending, which will update with the final score after the match. The digital prepaid cards – ranging from $5-$999 AUD – are available at Visa kiosks throughout the stadium and can be used in and outside the stadium, excluding ATM and online purchases. Following the match, participating and eligible fans can also redeem a limited number of free match day non-fungible token (NFT) that memorializes their football experience, courtesy of Visa.

For cash-only fans from around the the world, Visa will have prepaid card kiosks at every stadium to exchange AUD and NZD to $25 and $100 Visa commemorative prepaid cards.

“Visa remains committed to enhancing the FIFA Women’s World Cup payment experience for football fans onsite. The unique Visa benefits at this tournament will add value to our cardholders’ purchases and help commemorate their match experiences far beyond the final whistle”, said Andrea Fairchild, global head of sponsorships, Visa.

For fans across the globe, Visa is the preferred payment service for all goods purchased at official FIFA stores and online at FIFA.com. The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 will kick-off this Thursday in Aotearoa New Zealand, with the Football Ferns taking on 1995 winners Norway at Eden Park in Auckland/Tāmaki Makaurau.

Fast-track visa process for Indians headed Down Under for T20 World Cup

Indian cricket fans travelling to Australia for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup will have less to worry about, at least when it concerns their visas. A fast-track visa process has been put in place for people going Down Under for the mega cricket event.

"One of the amazing things is that if you buy a ticket, you have a fast-tracked visa system in place. So the organisers, through official ticket agents in India, have made an arrangement with the government in Australia to get a fast-tracked ticket so you get a decision in two or three days. Hopefully, there should be no barrier," said Brendan McClements, Chief Executive Officer of Visit Victoria.

New Tourism Australia campaign launches ahead of the FIFA Women's World Cup 2023™

Tourism Australia is today launching a special instalment of its global  Come and Say G’day  campaign, which will feature around the world in key international tourism markets participating in the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™.

Link Copied!

The new Holiday Highlights campaign will show international audiences, tuning in to watch the action in this year’s Women’s World Cup, the breadth and depth of unique travel destinations and experiences found in Australia.

Minister for Trade and Tourism, Don Farrell, said the new campaign highlights what Australia has to offer while the global spotlight is on our country for the month-long tournament.

“With the world’s attention turning to Australia throughout the FIFA Women’s World Cup, it is a perfect moment to showcase Australia and invite international travellers to come and experience our amazing country,” Mr Farrell said.

“This Holiday Highlights campaign will be seen in key Tourism Australia markets of countries competing in the tournament, including the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Germany, Japan and South Korea.”

Tourism Australia Managing Director, Phillipa Harrison, said the first Women’s World Cup to be held in the Southern Hemisphere comes at an important time for Australia’s tourism industry.

“Major events, such as the Women’s World Cup, provide us with the opportunity to showcase Australia’s incredible tourism experiences to billions around the world and encourage people to plan and book an Australian holiday,” Ms Harrison said.

“This tournament comes at a crucial time, with Australia’s tourism industry steadily rebuilding from the impacts of the global pandemic, and we hope the Holiday Highlights campaign inspires football fans to visit Australia after the final whistle has blown.”

Tourism Australia Chief Marketing Officer, Susan Coghill, said it was important to harness a cultural moment that could build on the momentum of the Come and Say G’day campaign.

“Once again using a distinctive character like Ruby, and recognisable destinations like Bondi Beach and the Great Barrier Reef, the campaign will remind consumers what they already know and love about Australia, whilst also extending a warm invitation to visit,” Ms Coghill said.

In the new Holiday Highlights broadcast ad (30-second and 15-second), Tourism Australia Brand Ambassador, Ruby the souvenir kangaroo, returns as a sports commentator reporting on the breadth of destinations and experiences on offer across Australia. The broadcast ad also features rising stars from Queensland Indigenous Football’s young women's team who are playing kickabout under a starry night sky on a Gold Coast beach.

The CEO of Queensland Indigenous Football Damian Munday is immensely proud to team up with Tourism Australia to showcase the warm Aussie welcome to the world and celebrate women in sport.

“It is incredibly exciting for our foundation and our young female players to be part of Tourism Australia’s global activity around the FIFA Women’s World Cup. This is also a unique opportunity to raise awareness of our mission to create more access to football opportunities for young Indigenous Australians,” Mr Munday said.

Holiday Highlights sees the return of Tourism Australia’s Brand Ambassador, Ruby the souvenir kangaroo, voiced by Australian actress and Tourism Australia’s Global Ambassador Rose Byrne. Ruby was introduced to the world via a live-action animated short film titled G’day "> G’day , and a multichannel Come and Say G’day campaign, which launched in 15 key international markets last October.

Millions of FIFA World Cup fans won’t be able to attend the tournament in the U.S. if they can’t get a visitor visa. That was one issue raised this week by hundreds of travel industry professionals at the U.S. Travel Association’s annual Destination Capitol Hill conference.

“The World Cup is maybe 800 days away,” said Megan Ryburn, Louisiana Travel Association’s director of external affairs. “With Colombia, that’s a real concern because right now the average wait time for that particular market is around 725 days.”

The U.S. is co-hosting the FIFA World Cup with Mexico and Canada in 2026. Dallas, Atlanta, New York and nine other cities are going to host the U.S. games.

Most international travelers who visit a World Cup game usually return to the host country, said Tori Barnes, executive vice president of public affairs and policy for the U.S. Travel Association.

Wait times spanning hundreds of days are expected to persist in Colombia, India and Mexico in 2024 for a first-time visitor visa, Julie Stufft, deputy assistant secretary for visa services, told Skift in Novembe r.

U.S. Travel estimates first-time visa wait times are over 400 days on average for the country’s top source markets. The State Department is focused on cutting wait times.

Delegates also brought up the need to lower custom wait times at airports and pass the Federal Aviation Administration reauthorization bill, said Travel Oregon Strategist Kate Baumgartner.

The Federal Aviation Administration reauthorization bill needs to be passed by both chambers of Congress and signed by the president by May 8, said Barnes.

New Tourism Secretary Office Needs Consistent Cash

Delegates also pushed to fund the new assistant secretary of commerce for travel and tourism in the 2025 fiscal year and beyond. Congress recently funded the position with up $3.5 million for the 2024 fiscal year. The position has not been filled yet.

“The U.S. is the only G-20 country without a federal agency or cabinet level official in charge of travel policy which will help kind of bridge that gap between our own delegation priorities from state levels to our congressmen and women,” said Ryburn.

Getting Bills Passed Before 2024 Presidential Election Goes Full Swing

Two other themes during the week were the future of tourism policy after the presidential election and how much appetite Congress has to get things done before the election, said Amir Eylon, CEO of Longwoods International.

“Things can get quiet in Washington D.C. for the second half of the year and a general election year,” said Baumgartner. “The urgency of some of those policy items, like the reauthorization of the FAA, may be even more urgent in the spring and summer.”
