Charging elephant kills an American woman on 'bucket list trip' in Zambia

An American woman who was on what she had called her "last big trip" was killed when a charging elephant flipped over the car she was traveling in at a national park in Zambia .

The “aggressive” creature buffeted the vehicle carrying six tourists and a guide, tour operator Wilderness said in a statement Tuesday. It said the 79-year-old victim died after Saturday's incident on a game drive at the Kafue National Park in western Zambia.

The company did not name the victim but Rona Wells, her daughter, identified her as Gail Mattson in a post on Facebook. She said her mother died in a “tragic accident while on her dream adventure.”

A video circulating on social media apparently showing the incident shows a large elephant running toward a car, which slows down as the animal approaches its left side. The elephant then flips the vehicle over and the passengers can be heard gasping as the car rolls over.

NBC News does not know the condition or identity of the person who filmed the video.

Photos shared online of the car, which is emblazoned with the logo of the tour operator, show it tipped onto its side after the incident, with a deep dent in two of its side doors.

Wilderness, which describes itself as a “leading conservation and hospitality company” operating in eight African countries, including Zambia, did not respond to NBC News when asked to confirm the authenticity of the video and the photos.

But the tour operator’s CEO, Keith Vincent, said in the statement that the company’s “guides are all extremely well trained and experienced.”

"Sadly in this instance the terrain and vegetation was such that the guide’s route became blocked and he could not move the vehicle out of harm’s way quickly enough,” he added.

Gail Mattson, during a safari in Zambia

Another woman was also injured in the incident and taken to a medical facility in South Africa, the Wilderness statement said, adding that four others were treated for minor injuries.

“It’s extremely rare to see an elephant that irate,” Marlon du Toit, a wildlife photographer and safari guide, told the “TODAY” show Thursday. “Across Africa, there are thousands and thousands of guests on safari on a daily basis with no negative consequences.”

The exact cause of Mattson’s death was unclear, but the company said her body would be repatriated to her family in the United States with the support of local Zambian authorities and the U.S. Embassy in the capital, Lusaka.

“This is a tragic event and we extend our deepest condolences to the family of the guest who died,” the statement added.

NBC News has reached out to Mattson's family for further comment.

Kafue National Park is Zambia’s largest and oldest national park, according to its website, and spans an area of more than 8,000 square miles. Vast regions of the park remain unexplored and the website says it is home to a variety of untamed wildlife.

A 'bucket list trip'

Mattson spent her winters in Sun City West, Arizona, playing bridge and cards, but during the rest of the year, she "travels all over the world," her friend Brenda Biggs told NBC News. Biggs and her husband, John Longabauth, became friends with Mattson when they moved to the area 6 ½ years ago.

Longabauth said Mattson spoke to the couple about her upcoming safari trip about two weeks ago, and called it "one of her bucket list trips." He said she was very excited for the adventure.

Before she left, she gave the couple concert tickets for a show that would happen while she was traveling, telling them to enjoy the concert and "I'll see you when I get back," Longabauth recalled of the conversation.

Biggs said Mattson, who was almost 80 years old, told her that the African safari was her "my last big trip." She said Mattson was "super excited because it was like the culmination of all the trips that she had gone on."

An avid traveler, Mattson took to trips to Europe and Asia, Longabauth recalled, noting that she might have been to South America, too.

Biggs called her friend "flamboyant," "friendly" and "fabulous" and said she loved bright colors. Mattson had taken over Biggs’ job as the event planner for their 200-member bridge club, she said.

"Gail was one of the more up people you'd ever want to meet," Longabauth said. "She was always up. She was always optimistic. She was always seeing the good side of everybody."

Who's in the field, how to get tickets for annual Club Car Championship golf at The Landings

azzam car tours

The picturesque Deer Creek Course at the Landings Golf & Athletic Club again will play host to the seventh annual Club Car Championship.

This week's event has become one of the marquee stops on the Korn Ferry Tour, a developmental tour where players compete to earn their way to the PGA Tour.

Past champions include Sam Burns, who won the title in 2018 and is now No. 21 in the Official World Golf Ranking. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, the betting favorite headed into the Masters Tournament next week, finished second behind Dan McCarthy in 2019 Club Car Championship.

Last year, David Skinns of England provided a great storyline as the 42-year-old University of Tennessee product won by a stroke, edging former Armstrong State star Shad Tuten and Tom Whitney for his third Korn Ferry Tour victory.

Players to watch

There are 156 golfers in the field who will be competing to make the 36-hole cut on Friday and compete on the weekend. Three former Georgia Southern standouts are in the field.

  • Ben Carr was the runner-up in the 2022 U.S. Amateur and earned spots in the 2023 Masters and U.S. Open tournaments. He is playing in on a sponsor's exemption and making his debut on the Korn Ferry Tour.
  • Former Eagle star Steven Fisk, who has a school-record nine collegiate wins and finished second in the 2019 NCAA Tournament, will also be teeing it up.
  • The pair will be joined by Mason Williams from the GS Class of 2023, who punched his ticket to the tournament by shooting a 63 in a Monday qualifier.
  • Every player ranked inside the top 50 on the Korn Ferry Tour Points List is in the field this week.
  • Three past champions are in the field this week: T.J. Vogel (2022), Evan Harmeling (2020) and Dan McCarthy (2019).

Moscow: City Sightseeing by Car/Bus

Visiting a new city is akin to going on a first date, it is something you will never forget. Many people imagine Moscow as just a bunch of sporadic landmarks: Red Square, the Kremlin, Lenin’s Mausoleum and GUM. There is so much more to this wonderful city than that and even though we only have a few hours, we will do all we can to show you everything we know and love about our capital in one fell swoop. We will take you on a journey through the ages, from centuries ago, right up to the modern day, soaking in the sights of this vast and bustling metropolis. Bright, luxurious and both ancient and modern at the same time, Moscow invites you on a date you’ll never forget!

On our sightseeing bus tour of the city, you will see:

  • The wonderfully historic city centre and its unique museums, magnificent cathedrals, the exquisite Chambers of the Romanov Boyars and of course, the famous towering red brick walls of the Kremlin, The charming beauty of the Alexander Garden awaits the capital's guests - a lush green oasis in the midst of the glass and concrete clad metropolis, basking in the etherial aura emanating from the whitewashed stone walls of the restored Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the world- renowned fairytale onion domes of St. Basil's Cathedral and other impressive monumental buildings such as the library built in Lenin's honour - the Russian State Library - and the State Duma.
  • The Lubyanka KGB headquarters is notorious to members of older generations and although nowadays, the face of the secret police has changed dramatically, the looming enigmatic building on the waterfront maintains its aura of mystery, shrouded in a variety of murky rumours and dark myths. Then, there’s another of Moscow's main attractions - the marvellous Bolshoi Theatre, yew simply cant leave Moscow without taking in its breathtaking architecture. Engrained in the fabric of Russia's cultural heritage, virtuoso performers such as prima ballerina Galina Ulanova, opera singer Feodor Chaliapin and pianist, composer and conductor Sergei Rachmaninoff once stood centre stage of this vaunted institution.
  • The memorial complex on Poklonnaya Hill was constructed in the glory and honour of our heroes who defended our nation in the many crucial battles of the Great Patriotic War (WWII). This is a place that embodies a particularly acute and inextricable link between older ancf younger generations. Moving on to the Moscow International Business Centre, not dubbed ‘Moscow City' for nothing, a true glimpse of the future in the present. This incredible, rather jaw-dropping project in the capital has shown that Moscow has come to accept the age of the skyscraper. Finally, the stunning views from the observation deck at Sparrow Hills will leave professional and amateur photographers alike itching to capture them. How could one resist?

The most beautiful of all the world's cities - lady Moscow invites you out on a date!

‘Traveling circus’ leads Canada’s Jared du Toit to Savannah

Tour Insider

Conditional Korn Ferry Tour pro finished eighth in Chile to earn start at Club Car Championship, with chance to set up his season

Change Text Size

It’s been a nice month at home for Jared du Toit after a worldwide, whirlwind start to his 2024. But with a Korn Ferry Tour start at this week’s Club Car Championship at The Landings Golf & Athletic Club – earned via a strong showing last month – the Canadian is more eager than ever to keep his schedule in North America moving forward.

“I’ve just been through the moon to be into bigger events that mean something,” said du Toit, 28, who punched his ticket to Savannah with a T8 at the Astara Chile Classic presented by Scotiabank last month. “It’s been a lot of fun.”

The name of du Toit may register as the precocious amateur who played in Sunday’s final group at the 2016 RBC Canadian Open, en route to a T9 finish. Since then, though, his career trajectory hasn’t launched the way that so many thought it would.

But now, with seven years of professional experience under his belt, a renewed sense of confidence and a clean bill of health, he’s looking at 2024 with nothing but positives.

“I feel like I’ve been slowly chipping away for a while,” said du Toit this week. “I had a lot of good signs in Canada last year, but I just didn’t play well enough to lock up Korn Ferry Tour status. There were just a handful of weeks where if I had a better last day or one better round I’d be punching my ticket right to Final Stage. That didn’t work out – so it was just a gauntlet of Q-Schools.”

Du Toit teed it up at PGA TOUR Q-School presented by Korn Ferry last fall, in addition to Q-Schools for the DP World Tour and Asian Tour. He advanced through PGA TOUR Q-School’s Second Stage, finally, and he also earned status in Asia.

He felt like his game was in good shape after the 2023 PGA TOUR Canada season and wanted to sign up for more than one Q-School at the end of last year, he said, because he didn’t want just one or two weeks to “determine his entire year.” Getting through PGA TOUR Q-School’s Second Stage was a “huge monkey off” his back, du Toit said, but Q-School’s Final Stage was a “buzzkill,” as he finished T119, 10 strokes outside the cut line for guaranteed Korn Ferry Tour starts.

“Just had a tough week on two difficult courses in difficult conditions,” he said. “Now I had to go to Asia – in my mind I was hoping I would play well enough at (PGA TOUR Q-School) Final (Stage) and I just wouldn’t need to go. That didn’t happen so I was kind of bummed there. I knew I was playing great and liked what I was doing.

“Played great in Asia and then it was like, ‘OK, I don’t know anything about this tour’ – but I played well enough to get some starts and let’s see how it goes.”

Du Toit’s effort on the other end of the world began by just planning for one week of travel, but that turned into five after various mathematical dominos fell his way. Turned out, his Q-School finish was enough for a spot in the Astara Chile Classic presented by Scotiabank (perhaps a good Canadian omen, as the bank’s headquarters is in Toronto), and he made the most of it with a T8 that secured his spot this week in Savannah.

Jared Du Toit makes his first start of the season at the Astara Chile Classic

The Korn Ferry Tour’s reshuffle of conditional members will occur after the next two events – this week’s Club Car Championship at The Landings Golf & Athletic Club and the LECOM Suncoast Classic in two weeks. If du Toit has a decent-enough week in Savannah, starting Thursday, he should be in good shape for the rest of the year.

The Arizona State alum is happy to be back to 100% after a left-shoulder injury sidelined him for two months last year. One doctor said he needed surgery, another said rehab would do it, and he listened to the latter – “It was a good little mental reset,” he said – with a good place to play in front of him.

He has seen and relished the success of his countrymen on the PGA TOUR in recent years, including Nick Taylor, who last summer became the RBC Canadian Open’s first Canadian winner in 69 years. Du Toit will see fellow TOUR winner Adam Hadwin in Arizona (Taylor has a house in the Scottsdale area, which has been du Toit’s home base since college) or longtime pal Stuart Macdonald, who plays on PGA TOUR Americas.

“A lot is schedule dependent,” du Toit said with a knowing laugh, having racked up tens of thousands of air miles already this year. “The traveling circus of professional golf – you’re more at home on the road.”

Alas, du Toit’s golf journey in 2024 has brought him back to the Korn Ferry Tour. The carrot at the end of this season, on this Tour, is huge, he said. And good play is set to help him achieve his ultimate goal.

“The Korn Ferry Tour … the great thing is that so many guys are eager to get out there,” du Toit said. “You’re almost a week away from the PGA TOUR. A couple of good weeks and you can turn a good week into a win and you’re almost #TOURBound.

“With the decent start and me playing pretty well, I just feel like if I take care of my business, I definitely have a good shot. I’m pumped to try.”
