Of course, Flores has many things to offer and it is a world away from the bustle of Bali. And also, it takes just 70 minutes flight from Bali to get to Labuan Bajo and it’s for people looking for a different sort of holiday.  There, you will find deserted white-sand beaches though, as well as curious locals, surreal volcanic lakes and beautiful sunsets.

How to get to Flores Island

The best hub to get to flores is From Denpasar Bali, Surabaya and Jakarta. And the flight from Denpasar to Labuan Bajo, West Flores takes about 1 hour. Certainly, Labuan Bajo is a launching point to explore the island’s interior and visit the giant dragons on Komodo and Rinca Island. In recent years, Labuan Bajo gradually turned into a busy spot because of the divers and the increased number of Komodo visitors. Today, this town offers a wide range of tourist facilities.

There is also another Flight from Bali to Ende or Maumere, where you can land and start exploring the Island from the eastern part of Flores. Maumere offers the unique culture and this district is famous with its Weaving. There we can also go on snorkeling to see the beauty of underwater in Teluk Maumere. Normally the tour continue to Moni to see Kelimutu lake before heading to the west part of the island.

The most attractive sites during Flores Island tours

Kelimutu , roughly in the center of Flores, is a popular spot for tourists (well, popular for Flores that is). The three colorful crater lakes (blue, green and black) of this mystical volcano are best seen at sunrise or sunset. Certainly, it is practically empty here compared to the crowds on top of Mount Batur, Bali. Actualy Moni, the small tourist town below the volcano, is a relaxing place to hang out and meet other travelers. There are also some short hikes in the nearby countryside and a chance to see the waterfall.

Seventeen Islands Marine Park in Riung

The Seventeen Islands Marine Park in Riung are uninhabited islands and they are beautiful. The mangrove isle of Pulau Ontoloe hosts a massive colony of flying foxes and a few Komodo dragons. while,  Pulau Rutong and Pulau Temba boast picture-perfect white sand and turquoise waters. There’s great snorkeling near Pulau Tiga, Pulau Laingjawa and Pulau Bakau. But wherever you visit, you won’t be disappointed.

Bena Village Bajawa Flores Indonesia

Bena village , in the megalithic Ngada, Flores Indonesia, precisely in the Village Tiwuriwu, District Aimere. And you can reach Bena village by using rental vehicles from Bajawa with the distance of about 19 km to the south Bajawa. From Labuan Bajo, Bajawa is about 7-8 hours by land transportation.

Location of Bena village is on a hilltop with a backdrop of Mount Inerie. It makes the atmosphere of the village more beautiful and exotic. Its presence at the bottom of the mountain is a hallmark of the old society who believe and revere the mountain as a place of the gods. And the people believe that the existence of god Bena Yeta that have place on Mount Inerie will protect their village.

Ruteng Flores Indonesia

Ruteng , a cool city in the highlands of Flores, is the capital of Manggarai district. This small town is attached to the gentle slopes of the northern side of the green mountain range of Mandusawu, at an altitude of 1,200 masl. The temperature in this city of 90,000 inhabitants ranges from 13 ° C – 25 ° C with humidity levels reaching 90%. Apart from the very cold temperatures, Ruteng is a city of rain with a fairly high intensity of 3,340 mm / year.

And Ruteng itself is surrounded by various tourist destinations that must be visited. One of which is the ancient cave of Liang Bua, where fossils of Homo floresiensis or better known as Hobbits from Flores were found. Liang Bua is 30 km from the town of Ruteng and takes 30 minutes.

Wae Rebo Village Flores Indonesia

Wae Rebo is a beautiful and amazing village. And it is covered by a thin mist throughout the township makes Wae Rebo deserves the epithet ‘village above the clouds’. Geographically, the village is situated above an altitude of 1,200 meters above sea level (m asl).

Wae Rebo is part of the Village Satar Lenda, District Satarmese, West Manggarai regency, Flores. And it is about 2.5 hour driving from Labuan Bajo to the trekking point. The Walking will start from the premises Denge ± 9 km distance which normally takes 2-4 hours, highly dependent on physical condition of each visitor.

Labuan Bajo, Flores Indonesia 

Labuan Bajo is a busy, rough tourist town that looks like it belongs in Bali. And it is on the western tip of Flores Island Indonesia. You will pass through it on the way to Komodo National Park, which is an absolute must-see, even if you aren’t planning on exploring the rest of Flores. Divers flock there for the top-class underwater action but there’s plenty around to keep non-divers happy. You can go on a one-night boat tour around Komodo National Park and see lots of Komodo dragons on Rinca Island but make sure not to get too close. The guides tell you to keep your distance but not everyone listens.

Then, you can go to the “pink beach”, a popular snorkeling spot. The reef, located just off the beach (which is actually pink), is home to hundreds of colorful fish of all shapes and sizes. As the day drew to a close, you can see dolphins jumping from the ocean as the sun going down.

3D2N Sailing Komodo Flores, Indonesia

I booked this tour in advance of my trip to Indonesia and, quite frankly, got scammed. Most people on the tour booked while they were in Indonesia and paid a third of what I paid. Also, when I arrived on the boat they had over sold the space in the “shared room” so I was given a chair cushion on the floor to sleep on- unacceptable (tour radar was very responsive in getting me a partial refund). Do not book this tour until the company has upgraded their boat. With all that being said, the Komodo Islands are beautiful and well worth a visit and the itinerary of this tour was great. Also, the food was amazing. Everything but the accommodation, but those are a deal breaker.

Even during COVID times or when we needed a last minute reschedule because of a weather warning. Once out on the trip, Flori and the team were awesome and tailored the tour to our pace and fancy, while also optimising for weather and safety. Each day had two sessions of kayaking of varying length depending how tired/up for it we were (a chance to see the beautiful landscape of Komodo park, wild dragons and stop at stunning beaches, without any other tourists). Then outside of that we would stop at all the famous spots in Komodo (pick beack, padar hike, dragons walk, manta point, turtle city etc) and all times inbetween could be spent in the sun or shaded deck reading a book with a beer or having a snorkel. It was paradise.

6 Day Komodo Kayak Insight

Hi there. My family did this trip and loved it. Our kids (7 and 10) enjoyed learning about the Komodo Dragons, seeing 11 of them in real life on Rinca Island. We all had fun snorkelling in the crystal clear warm waters with heaps of coral and lots of fish to see. Sea kayaking was fun and achievable travelling between islands. We could jump back on the support boat any time for a rest if needed. Meals were lovely and the beach camping was great in large tents, all set-up by the crew. The crew kept us safe, kayaking with us if required, watching over us at all times. Our kids did the kayaking also resting when tired, sometimes jumping out and back onto the boat for a spot of sun-baking/relaxing on the top deck. Labuan Bajo is a lovely coastal city in Flores with the hustle and bustle of a working city combined with a relaxing tourist friendly vibe. Some great restaurants to visit also. Sailing Trip Komodo Island with Phinisi Boat

Wow! What a great three days abord a boat plying the waters of the Komodo National Park. Swimming with giant manta rays, getting close up to the Komodo Dragon, hiking to the top of Padar Island to take in the most spectacular vistas were the highlights of the trip. And we were all surprised by the quantity and truly excellent quality of our meals. Only negative (which should easily be corrected) was when one of our group injured a toe, there was no first aid kit on board. One from a nearby boat was used.

Day 6: Bromo, Java

Start day 6 with an incredible sunrise over the active Bromo Volcano . Now, don’t forget to bring something warm because it will be freezing cold before sunrise. Luckily, this is the only cold place on your Indonesia route.

Day 7: Ijen Crater, Java

Visit the Ijen crater in the middle of the night to see the ‘blue fire’ and the sunrise over the aqua blue crater lake. The hike to the top is pretty steep, which makes it quite challenging; however, the view on the crater makes it up to you!

It’s time to follow your Indonesia route to the island of gods; Bali! From the Ijen crater, it is 30 minutes to the harbor where the ferry is waiting for you. Once in Bali, it takes 3 hours to reach Canggu.

Day 8 – 10: Seminyak or Canggu

Seminyak and Canggu are two fantastic towns popular for its surfing, beach clubs, and an incredible choice of restaurants. Take a day to relax and recover because you just did two sunrise mornings on Java. The beach, a coconut, delicious food, and the nearby rice fields will make sure you recover well.

For Canggu, the most central places are Batu Bolong and Berawa, where there are loads of great cafes, restaurants, and beach clubs close by, as well as great surf spots.

Day 11 – 14: Ubud, Bali

Next up is the art village Ubud. The area is popular because of the surrounding rice fields, waterfalls, yoga retreats, and Ubud Art Market. Both Tegalalang rice fields and the Monkey Forest in Ubud are things you have to see on your Bali Route .

Stay in the center of Ubud, where you are close to all the main tourist spots, shops, and restaurants. If you are looking for something a little more rural, there are some great accommodation options close to the rice terraces.

Day 15 – 16: Nusa Penida, Bali

Incredible white sandy beaches and 200-meter high cliff drops; Nusa Penida is one of the most stunning places on your route through Indonesia. Visit the T-Rex head Kelingking and hike down to one of Bali’s most beautiful beaches: Diamond Beach . Nusa Penida is stunning!

Arrange a taxi + boat transfer from Ubud. It takes about two to three hours to reach Penida Island. On your last night, make your way back to Kuta, Bali, and spend the night near the airport. Book a return flight from Bali to Labuan Bajo tomorrow you are heading to Komodo National Park .

Day 17: Labuan Bajo, Flores

Labuan Bajo is a little port town on Flores island. It is the entrance to UNESCO labeled Komodo National Park , home of the Komodo Dragon. Labuan Bajo itself has not much to offer so use it as a stopover before you head on a boat into the park. The flight to Labuan Bajo from Bali only takes 45 minutes.

There are lots of things to do in Labuan Bajo, so aim to spend at least one night here if you can. It’s a small town, and you are able to walk around in 30 minutes, which means most accommodation options will locate you close to all the main bars and cafes. Alternatively, choose one of the relaxing beach resorts which are a bit further out of the center.

Day 18 – 20: Komodo Islands, the highlight of your route through Indonesia

Hi Jonas! Once you get to Labuan Bajo on the island of Flores (often the beginning or end of Komodo Island tours), you can fly back to Jakarta from there. It’s worth exploring Flores for a few days, relaxing in town. Though a different experience, Jakarta also has a couple of nice areas with good food and relaxing hotels. Hope that helps!

Day 1 : bali – labuan bajo – rinca island – kalong island.

Depart Ngurah Rai Airport to Komodo Airport of Labuanbajo, West Flores. Our local representative will greet you upon arrival (Tour guide and driver). Transfer to harbour for sailing to Rinca Island by local wooden motorized boat (depend on your boat booking). Arrive in Rinca island meet with the ranger or local guide from Komodo National Park at the pier then he will take you into the bush to see the komodo dragon and other wild life, such as water buffalo, Timor deer, long tail macaque, etc. Afterward back to the boat and continue sailing to Kalong island to see the thousands bats flying out to Flores island to seek their food. Dinner and accommodation will be served on the boat.

Day 2 : KALONG – KELOR ISLAND – LABUAN BAJO – BALI

Morning walk through the fisherman villages of Rinca, visit the primary school and meet the fishermen and villagers. Back to the boat for your breakfast while sailing to KELOR island for trekking to the top of kelor island to see the magic view of the surrounding islands and Labuan bajo town in the distance.
