Bangkok Travel Guide

Bangkok is a city that thrives on contrasts and embraces the weird, the wonderful, and the whacky. Its happy essence and vibrant nature is owed to the everyday hustle and daily grind of the people. A place like no other, enriched with culture and many delights that go way beyond a plate of Pad Thai. This city is a must see and an experience to remember any time you visit. From the casual tuk-tuk, market stalls, trendy skyscrapers and delicious food, the city harnesses a plethora of appeal.

With many popular neighborhoods to explore and plenty of traditional, world class foods to try. Whatever you're here for, this is a destination that delivers romance, adventure, and family time.

In an unreservedly soulful city, you can expect nothing less.

It is without a doubt an oriental heavyweight, beloved for its pulsating Soi's, nightlife, food, and spa's. And, contrary to common belief, this 'big smoke' has plenty of greenery at its fingertips for those wanting a break from the noise. And just for good measure, the views in Bangkok are not to be missed, offering unrivalled seclusion from the concrete jungle. Climb the Sky Bars at night and be rewarded with a sparkling metropolis twinkling in its glory.

Sashaying with the sweet, the sour, and everything in between, there is no denying that the Land of Smiles will capture your senses and your heart.

Indochina Time (ICT)

Best Time to Go

Thai Buddhist New Year (otherwise known as 'Songkran') is a celebration the locals (of all ages) eagerly await all year round. On April 13, this metropolitan city shuts down for a three-day holiday. The locals then proceed to the streets, to have what can only be described as the biggest water festival in the world!

If the thought of this screams adventure to you, then don't forget to pack your brightest floral shirt and your best water gun! Check out Bangkok's Silom, a neighborhood where the atmosphere is pumping, the roads are closed off and the water barrels are lining the streets.

The easiest way to get there is by hopping on the BTS Skytrain (Silom or dark green line) and following the herds of brightly patterned shirts. Upon exiting the station, you will be greeted with some friendly, splashin' fun. If having water thrown on you randomly in the street isn't really your thing, then avoiding most parts of this country, at this time of year, is probably a good idea!

FYI: This time of year is HOT, HOT, HOT. In fact, April is known for being the hottest month of the year, so if you are averse to strong heat and humidity do check out the cooler months of the year.

Throughout the months of January and February, Bangkok proudly presents the very chilled Concert in the Park. Starting at 5:30 p.m. every Sunday, the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra plays a two-hour set, consisting of stunning compositions from both Thai and Western music. You can expect to hear plenty of popular classics from the big movies, musicals, and pop band heroes. Do as the locals do by taking a blanket or folding chairs, plus your favourite picnic essentials. You'll be ready to settle in and soak up the atmosphere.

November to February are generally the cooler months in most parts of Thailand, including Bangkok. However, if you're planning a trip to the islands from the capital do check the weather carefully. Whilst some areas of northern Thailand are determined by the three distinct climates, there are southern regions governed by just two. These areas are known for getting more rainfall.

Things to Know

Bangkok is a huge bustling city with a population of over 10 million and its bold colours and cool vibrations span over 50 districts making it impossible to absorb it all in a single trip. With so much to see and do, this is a city that loves an itinerary. It's also a city that loves wandering feet — being ready to trail off the beaten path and throw away the schedule could pay off in dividends.

Bangkok Soi's (streets/alleys) are well known for their hidden gems. Some have more pop-ups than a pogo stick, so being prepared to go with the flow could full-well deliver the magic you never expected.

Get used to the idea of using the BTS Skytrain and the MRT rail lines, otherwise getting anywhere fast will likely be a stickler for your trip. Traffic can be a deadlock, especially at peak times of the day. Planning your mode of transport ahead of time could be the key to unlocking extra time in a mind-blowing city.

The city is a food haven for anyone who loves hearty and flavorsome cooking. With so many dishes to try, do your palate a favour and start off with the following favourites: Khao Soi, Pad Thai, Som Tam, Massaman Curry, Laab, Pak Boong, and Penang Curry. And there's plenty more where they came from. With a mix of unique textures, flavors, and cultural influences, don't be surprised if you fall in love with authentic Thai cuisine.

The Thai people generally pride themselves on being respectful and polite, with this you can expect to be greeted with the Wai (palms together at your chest accompanied with a subtle bow of the head) — reciprocate to share the warm sentiment. It is illegal to defame or insult the King or any members of the royal family. To avoid any misunderstanding, steer clear of any mention of his royal highness.

How to Get Around

Tessa Desjardins/Travel + Leiusre

Bangkok is brimming with transport options and choosing the right mode that is fit for your journey is vital.

Trains: The BTS Skytrain is most likely the most convenient way to reach your destination in the shortest time possible. There are sixty-one stations along three main lines, and it's extending every day. This mode of transport is cheaper than taxis and covers all the major Bangkok neighborhoods. Sukhumvit and Silom being the most popular lines for locals and tourists alike. With waiting times averaging less than five minutes, you can hop on this friendly service and know that you'll experience the convenience of time, as well as air conditioned and clean carriages. Be prepared to be 'packed in' during peak times. Have cash available to buy instant tickets from the machines or take your passport to purchase a Rabbit Card for regular Skytrain use. Your journey will start from around $0.45 for one stop. If you know you'll be making good use of the service, take your passport and buy a rabbit card. Sticking $10 on it should have you covered for a while, and you can top up anytime. The best part is claiming back the cost of the card (and what you didn't spend) at the end of your trip is easy. Just return it to any Skytrain kiosk.

The MRT is Bangkok's rapid underground rail system. Like the Skytrain, the MRT has a quick turnaround and covers vast areas of Bangkok, including the old quarters. Take cash to exchange for tokens or cards.

Both BTS and the MRT are interconnected at popular stations for seamless overlaps in city travel.

Taxis: Bangkok taxis are everywhere and come in an array of funky colours, adding a wash of blue, orange, pink, green, and yellow to an already vivacious bustling scene. Even though flagging a cab down is relatively easy, depending on the time of day, a 10-minute journey may end up taking an hour or so. Traffic is relentlessly jammed pretty much everywhere you go, especially during peak times.

It's also worth noting that some drivers may not have the meter on when you get in, this happens a lot in tourist areas. Be sure to check and ask for "Meter kah/khap?" before you hop in.

Generally, it's very normal for a driver to communicate with you via the passenger window before unlocking the doors and letting you in. Having maps open and your address pinned for easy view can speed up the process.

Paying: Carrying loose coins and small notes is a good way to avoid being (unintentionally) short changed. Some drivers may claim they don't have small coins/notes to give back to you. When you come to pay, round up your fare to the nearest five or 10 baht, this can also make the transaction easier for both parties.

Motorbike Taxis: A popular (and fun) way to travel for short distances, particularly from train stations. The bikes can get into the nooks and crannies of the Soi's and easily duck and dive their way through the hot traffic. Having some basic Thai is recommended, as is being able to communicate your destination. Carrying your own helmet is highly advised, but most will provide one, if you ask.

Basic language to learn:

Go Left: Pị thāng ŝāy

Go Right: Pị thāng k̄hwā

Straight on: Trng pị

Stop here: H̄yud trng nī̂

Tuk-Tuk: A cultural emblem and still a somewhat reliable mode of transport in the heart of Bangkok. Flagging one down shouldn't be too difficult, especially around the tourist area of Siam. Prices will vary wildly and a 10-minute spin could set you back around 300baht. Sharpening up the bartering skills may be essential. Some hotels will have their own free Tuk-Tuk ready and waiting to drop guests at the nearest BTS/MRT station.

Things to Do

The grand palace.

Address: Phra Borom Maha Ratchawang Phra Nakhon Bangkok 10200 Phone: NA Website

Visiting the palace will realistically take a few hours of your time, depending on where you are staying and how you choose to get there. Give yourself between 60 and 90 minutes to enjoy the grounds and the stunning shrines—the Emerald Buddha is a must see.

Showing up without booking is usually fine, or you can play it safe and book via the website one day in advance. There's a 500-baht entry fee and a very strict dress code, so be sure to cover your legs and shoulders at all times—for a small fee you can hire sarongs at the ticket office. Make sure to go early to beat the heat.

All sites are geographically placed within the 320 acres of land and have been reproduced to reflect their original beauty and charm. A full day is necessary to cover the grounds, as is hiring a bicycle (or a cart buggy) upon arrival—and don't forget to look out for the Buffalos on your travels.

This attraction gets busy and can get very, very HOT, so take plenty of water and a few snacks to keep you going. Choosing the coolest day from your schedule is advised. Jump on the Sukhumvit BTS line and get off at Kheha station, upon exit hop in a cab for a five-minute journey. Check the website for the most up to date booking information.

If dining on the river appeals to you, but the boat doesn't, check out the riverside restaurants for some spectacular views and delicious food.

Cafe Culture in Thonglor- Ekkamai

Address: Thonglor - Exit 3 - BTS Station

If you love people watching, quality coffee and a slower pace away from crowds, then checking out the cafe culture in Sukhumvit's hip Thonglor/Ekkamai neighborhoods, may be precisely what you're looking for. Head to 'The Commons' (home to independent vendors, small events and creative workshops) and you will find Roost Coffee Roaster, renowned for excellent coffee and a community approach. Hop across the road to its younger brother, 'Seenspace', for Brave Roasters serving equally delicious coffee, plus craft beers. Whilst in the neighborhood, scoot over to Mocking Tales, a fairy tale cafe, making all your sweet tooth dreams a reality. With a dressing up box for the kids and an Instagram worthy concept, you'll have a magical time. Skip the main meal and go straight for the desserts—the Dragon's Fire Breath is a showstopper.

One more cafe left in you? If yes, pop over to Ekamai and try Blue Dye, a house-turned-cafe. The owner exhibits and sells his own '(un) Fashion Vintage Collection' as well as products from other independent brands. If you're lucky, you may catch a chilled gig on the terrace.

Bangkok is prone to sporadic showers of the year and guaranteed during the rainy season, where impressive thunderous storms will have you running for shelter. Throughout the whole year you can expect up to nine to 10 hours of daylight, with the sun setting between 6 - 7 p.m.

Solo Travel in Bangkok: The Ultimate Guide for Traveling Alone in Bangkok, Thailand

Bangkok is an exhilarating city for solo travelers. As a solo traveler myself, I’ve spent plenty of time wandering Bangkok’s chaotic streets and getting delightfully lost in the organized madness of it all.

The sights, sounds, smells – it assaults your senses in the best possible way! But it can also feel a bit overwhelming at first when you’re on your own.

With this ultimate solo travel in Bangkok guide, you’ll discover the top things to do, where to stay, getting around tips, essential safety advice, and more – so you can confidently venture out and devour all that Bangkok has to offer on your own!

Why the City of Angels is Great for Solo Travel

From the moment I arrived in Bangkok, it just felt easy. Getting around was a breeze thanks to the user-friendly transit system. The vibe was exciting yet chilled out. But what really struck me was how incredibly friendly and welcoming the Thai people were. Hospitality comes naturally to them, so as a solo traveler, you never feel alone.

Here are some of the key reasons Bangkok makes an awesome solo travel destination:

It’s a safe and easy city to navigate

With so many fellow travelers passing through Bangkok, everything is set up for tourists. The infrastructure like airports, trains, buses, and taxis run smoothly. Signs and transit maps are in English. Locals are accustomed to helping lost visitors. For a first-time solo destination, it ticks all the boxes.

The public transportation is excellent

Bangkok’s BTS Skytrain, MRT subway, extensive bus network, river ferries, and Grab taxis make getting around efficient and affordable. No need to rely on overpriced tourist taxis or terrifying tuk-tuk rides.

It’s budget-friendly

Thailand offers outstanding value for money. Dorm beds at quality hostels start around $10 USD per night. Street food and local restaurants will let you eat like a king for $2-5 per meal. Even attractions like temples and museums rarely cost over $5 USD.

The food is out of this world

From mango sticky rice to spicy papaya salad, you’ll enjoy the best of Thai cuisine. Don’t miss the street food scene – pulling up a plastic stool at a busy stall is a must!

It’s a launch point for Southeast Asia travel

As a major regional hub, Bangkok places you in a prime position to explore more of SE Asia. You can find convenient onward travel to Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Malaysia, and Indonesia.

There are tons of activities for solo travelers

Take your pick from cooking classes to bicycle tours to yoga retreats and more. Joining group activities is a great way to meet fellow travelers.

Thais are incredibly friendly people

With their warm smiles and gracious hospitality, the locals make visitors feel welcome. Even with the language barrier, you’ll have no problem interacting with new Thai friends.

With these perks in mind, it’s no wonder Bangkok remains a favorite stop for solo travelers. The city envelops you in its energy and provides everything you need to feel comfortable venturing out on your own.

Best Areas to Stay in Bangkok For Solo Travelers

With unlimited accommodations to choose from, picking where to stay in Bangkok can feel overwhelming. As a solo traveler, the main priorities are safety, convenience, and staying somewhere with opportunities to socialize.

Here are my top recommendations for neighborhood areas and hotels for solo travelers:

Khao San Road Area

Khao San Road is backpacker central and prime party zone. For solo travelers looking to make new friends, it’s ideal. Budget guesthouses and hostels line the streets, along with bars blaring music into the night and vendors selling pad thai from carts. It’s grungy but full of life.

Some notable hostels:

– Mad Monkey Bangkok – Social atmosphere with fun events like beer pong tournaments – Lub D Bangkok Silom – Highly rated with mixed dorms and female-only options   – NapPark Hostel – Rooftop pool and large common room to mingle

For something more laid-back, consider staying in Silom. It has a local neighborhood vibe but is still very central. Silom Art Hostel and Smile Society are good affordable options. This area puts you close to delicious street food at Patpong Night Market, the lush Lumphini Park, and the Skytrain.

Sukhumvit Area

This vibrant expat district is great if you want upscale amenities and nightlife. Stay near the Skytrain stations around Sukhumvit Soi 11 for tons of dining, nightclubs, and shopping at Terminal 21 mall. Try traveling east to Sukhumvit Soi 38 for a more relaxed, residential feel. The Atlanta Hotel and Bed Station Hostel Sukhumvit 11 has affordable rates.

By Transit Stations

Since Bangkok’s BTS and MRT make getting around so easy, anywhere along the transit lines is convenient. Look for hostels like Beds on Sukhumvit or hotels like the Asoke Paradise by Compass Skytrain in central spots. Avoid outlying areas that would require long rides or taxi trips to reach the action.

Doing a little location research will ensure your Bangkok stay is well-situated for solo travelers. But don’t stress over it too much – with such an efficient transit system, it’s easy to get everywhere in the city.

Top Attractions in Bangkok and Things to Do Alone

Now for the fun part – what to do once you arrive! Bangkok offers endless possibilities, but as a first-timer, you’ll want to hit some highlights. As a solo traveler, I preferred focusing on activities where I could easily meet fellow travelers or immerse myself in Thai culture.

Here are some of my favorite things to do in Bangkok:

Marvel at Bangkok’s Grand Palace, Wat Pho, and Wat Arun

No first-timer’s itinerary is complete without visiting these jaw-dropping royal and religious complexes. The sheer beauty will leave you in awe. The Grand Palace, Wat Phra Kaew, and the Emerald Buddha statue are musts. Across the street, you can admire Wat Pho’s giant reclining Buddha and stroll through the peaceful grounds.

Joining a guided tour is a great way to maximize your time when visiting solo while learning interesting history and fun facts from a local expert. Just be sure to wear respectful clothing that covers the knees and shoulders.

Wat Arun Bangkok

Go shopping at Chatuchak Weekend Market

One of the largest markets in Bangkok, Chatuchak is a shopper’s paradise with over 15,000 stalls and vendors selling everything under the sun. Food, clothing, home decor, plants – you name it, they have it. The market’s energy is infectious, with Thai music pumping through the maze of aisles.

Go early to beat the peak daytime heat and crowds. Wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and be prepared to get lost wandering for hours. Chatuchak is such an immersive local experience.

Check out Chinatown

Bangkok’s Chinatown district offers a fascinating glimpse into the city’s Chinese heritage and culture. The bright neon signs, gold-trimmed temples like Wat Traimit, and bustling markets like the flower and the book markets make it a street photographer’s dream. Don’t miss sampling delicious Chinese cuisine found here.

Get a Thai Massage

After all that walking around, your weary body will thank you for a relaxing Thai massage. The stretching, pressure point work, and manipulations help ease sore muscles. You’ll find affordable rates at massage shops all over Bangkok. For a more upscale spa experience, book a package at Let’s Relax or Health Land.  The ultimate is getting a massage at Wat Pho, considered Thailand’s leading school of massage.

Experience Bangkok’s Famous Nightlife

Once the sun sets, Bangkok comes alive. On a solo trip, checking out the city’s legendary nightlife scene is a must! For rooftop bars, Octave Rooftop Lounge offers fantastic views and jazzy music. Or sip craft cocktails at Rabbit Hole and Thaipioka are great as well.

If you want to dance the night away with Bangkok’s cool crowd, check out Havana, Sing Sing Theater, or Sugar Club Bangkok. And don’t forget the infamous party street Khao San Road – grab a sidewalk table solo to people watch and chat up fellow travelers over budget beers.

Great Day Trips to Take From Bangkok

Since Bangkok makes a convenient base to explore beyond, take advantage and book a few quick day trips. Getting out of the big city provides a beautiful change of scenery and cultural experiences. Here are some top ideas:

Visit Ayutthaya’s Temples and Ruins

Just 1.5 hours by train from Bangkok, the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ayutthaya showcases the history of ancient Thailand’s impressive capital. Wander the temple ruins stretching throughout the modern city, ride a bike around the area, and soak up the stories behind this important archaeological site.

Float Through the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

Escape the chaos of Bangkok by taking a day trip to Damnoen Saduak, located about two hours outside the city in Ratchaburi Province. This vibrant floating market features vendors in traditional boats selling fresh fruit, vegetables, and tasty dishes. Don’t forget to barter! Early morning offers a magical scene floating down the canals.

Relax on Koh Samet Island

If you have more time, do an overnight trip to Koh Samet, an idyllic tropical island in the Gulf of Thailand. Just six hours away from Bangkok by minibus and ferry, its white sand beaches, hiking trails, and laid-back vibe make for a refreshing getaway. Connect back with solo traveler friends you’ve met in Bangkok.

Getting Around Alone in Bangkok

Bangkok’s transportation network makes getting around straightforward. But as a newbie traveler on your own, you’ll want to avoid running into problems. Follow these tips:

Use public transit, not taxis – Bangkok’s efficient BTS Skytrain, MRT subway and bus networks are incredibly affordable, with fares under $1 USD. It’s hassle-free and protects you from taxi scams.

Get a Rabbit Card (Skytrain) – This reloadable contactless card saves you the hassle of buying single journey tickets. Load it up with cash and tap to ride trains and buses.

Avoid regular Tuk-Tuks – While fun for short joy rides, tuk-tuks lack meters, and drivers notoriously overcharge tourists. Grab a metered taxi instead.

Grab a Grab – Use app-based Grab taxis and motorbikes rather than old-school taxis. Input your destination for a fixed reasonable fare.

Plan routes ahead – Google Maps works well for navigating Bangkok’s transit. The BTS has convenient transfer walkways to the MRT at exchange hubs like Siam and Asok stations.

Ask for help – Thai people are super helpful. If you are confused about transit, locals will kindly assist you. Don’t be shy!

Best Travel Safety Tips for Bangkok

While Bangkok is generally safe for solo travelers, it’s smart to exercise common sense precautions in this big city. Here are key safety tips:

  • Only take registered taxis or use ride apps like Grab to get around the city
  • Avoid deserted areas and dimly lit streets at night
  • Be wary of strangers approaching you with amazing deals
  • Secure valuables in lockers and money belts
  • Don’t carry large amounts of cash
  • Be alert for pickpockets in crowded tourist areas
  • Don’t leave drinks unattended
  • Always meet online dates in public places
  • Alert hotel staff if you feel unsafe at any point

Bangkok is an amazing city to explore solo. But staying alert, avoiding risky behavior, and using trusted services will keep you secure.

Making New Friends and Solo Travel Connections

A highlight of solo travel in Bangkok is meeting new people from around the world. Luckily it’s easy to link up with other travelers to swap stories, grab dinner, or party in Bangkok. Here are some tips:

  • Stay at hostels like Mad Monkey with sociable vibes
  • Join free walking tours and pub crawls
  • Ask solo travelers you meet for food and sightseeing tips
  • Sign up for group activities and cooking classes
  • Chat with people at coworking spaces or coffee shops
  • Strike up conversations with travelers in transit
  • Plenty of Facebook groups connect Bangkok ex-pats and travelers

Put yourself out there and stay open-minded. Some of your most treasured travel memories will be those shared with new friends.

Is Bangkok Safe for Solo Female Travellers?

For women traveling alone, safety is an understandable concern. The good news is that Bangkok is generally safe – violent crime rates are low and millions of tourists visit annually without incident. However, it always pays to exercise extra caution solo:

  • Dress conservatively when visiting temples
  • Avoid deserted streets and take registered taxis at night
  • Stay in central, well-lit areas like Sukhumvit
  • Use hotel safes and lockers to secure valuables
  • Be wary of drink spiking at bars; watch drinks being poured
  • Use female-only hostel dorms if it makes you more comfortable
  • Take registered tour transport for long day trips
  • Follow your instincts and remove yourself from uncomfortable situations

While Bangkok is safe for female tourists, using prudent judgment helps avoid any hassles as a solo. Travel confidently but remember you are ultimately responsible for your own well-being.

Top Tips for an Awesome Solo Travel in Bangkok

To wrap up this solo guide, here are some final bits of advice to maximize your time in Bangkok:

  • Stay central near public transit to get around easily
  • Grab a prepaid SIM card on arrival for Google Maps and Grab
  • Pack light with clothes that cover shoulders and knees for temples
  • Be bold and say yes to every opportunity that excites you
  • Eat street food from busy stalls; the crowds mean it’s fresh
  • Learn a few simple Thai phrases to impress locals
  • People watch the riverside at a rooftop bar with live music
  • Embrace solo slow travel and move at your own pace
  • Soak up the spiritual vibes at less crowded temples
  • Let yourself get lost down curio-filled market lanes
  • Meet locals for insight into daily life beyond tourist sites
  • Tour by long-tail boat for a new perspective on the city
  • Find a balance between independence and meeting fellow travelers

Stay flexible, embrace surprises, and enjoy your own company. Bangkok will seduce all your senses and leave you with captivating memories. Also, make sure to visit other cities like Phuket and Chiang Mai to complete your solo travel trips.

9 things you should know before visiting Bangkok

Austin Bush

I moved to Bangkok in 1999, a time when most visitors to Thailand reluctantly did a night in this megacity before beelining to an island or the north. Synonymous with traffic jams, pollution and urban sprawl, the Thai capital was largely seen as an unwanted but obligatory stopover.

Decades later, things have changed and Bangkok is now the destination of choice for many visitors – with good reason. Easier to get around and cleaner than ever, with a vibrant eating and drinking scene that caters to just about every budget and an enviable spread of intriguing sights and fantastic-value shopping, the city has more to offer than ever before.

Yet like any big city, Bangkok has its quirks and surprises. Here's what you need to know before you go.

Find out what you should know in advance about Thailand , including important cultural, religious and legal issues, etiquette and health.

Bangkok is easier to get around than ever

Bangkok used to be synonymous with traffic jams and air pollution. The jams still happen, but the good news is that the city’s public transportation system has grown immensely. The various above and underground rail networks currently unite 10 different lines – with more in the works – and 192 stations, including trains linking both of Bangkok’s international airports and the city center.

On top of this, taxis remain ubiquitous and cheap – though subject to the issues that make the city’s traffic so infamous – while quirky public transportation systems such as the city’s river and canal taxis provide a slow but steady (and scenic) way to get around.

Crime happens but it's rare

Thailand has a low crime rate and is generally considered a safe country. Bangkok suffers from the same type of violent crimes as any big city, but anecdotally, is considered a safe place. Apart from occasional bag snatching and theft, the most dangerous thing in the city is its traffic (Thailand’s roads are some of the deadliest of any country). Solo women travelers and locals I’ve spoken to also report feeling safe in the city.

A particular Bangkok annoyance is scams directed at tourists. These typically involve taxi drivers who refuse to use their meters, or tuk-tuk drivers and/or well-dressed, English-speaking men who appear out of nowhere offering free tours that inevitably lead to dodgy gem shops or tailors. The good news is that most of these situations are easy to spot and relatively low-pressure; if something seems off, simply walk away.

It’s also worth noting that Bangkok’s police don’t have a great reputation. Steer clear of them unless you really need help.

Close up shot of young Asian woman having freshly made authentic Thai food in a Thai restaurant

Street food isn’t the only good food

Western chefs and food media have been raving about Bangkok’s street food for more than a decade. And it’s a fun, often delicious way to eat. But if you relegated yourself to street food alone, you’d miss the entire scope of Bangkok’s cuisine.

Supplement those streetside noodles with meals at the charming, decades-old restaurants in the old town – these are the places that get the most praise in the Thai-language media. In Bangkok’s newer districts, such as along Thanon Sukhumvit, consider a Japanese meal – the city is home to one of the largest populations of Japanese people outside of Japan.

If your budget allows, consider a splurge restaurant. While the rest of the world was obsessing over its street food, Bangkok's dining scene went in the opposite direction and today is home to several modern, cutting-edge upscale restaurants.

Sometimes it's too hot to handle

Bangkok is one of the hottest capital cities in the world, with an average mean temperature of 29°C (84°F). This heat is compounded by intense humidity and the urban environment, which reflects and retains heat, meaning the city often feels much, much ( much ) hotter. April is Bangkok's hottest month, with an average daily max temperature of 35°C (96 ° F) and during the “winter” in December and January, temperatures rarely dip below 20°C (68°F).

All of this means you shouldn't try to cover too much ground on foot – an already difficult task given the city’s lack of pedestrian infrastructure. If you do walk, learn the technique of regularly ducking into air-conditioned malls, hotel lobbies and 7-Elevens to cool off.

Likewise, pack light clothing, but remember – Thais are conservative when it concerns showing skin in public and Bangkok is not the beach.

Bangkok is a queer-friendly city

LGBTIQ+ people are made to feel welcome in Bangkok, which is generally considered Asia’s most queer-friendly city. The epicenter of the gay scene is Thanon Silom, especially in and around Soi 4, which is ostensibly Asia’s biggest queer nightlife area.

Thankfully, it looks like this queer-friendly vibe will extend to legislation. In 2023, the Thai parliament passed draft bills on same-sex marriage, which are expected to become laws, making Thailand the first country in Southeast Asia to allow same-sex marriage.

Keep in mind that public displays of affection between people of any gender are frowned upon in Thailand.

Man wearing a backpack looking at a map on a busy street in Bangkok

There are better budget options than Khao San Road

If you want to be based in the world’s most famous backpacker strip – and all that that entails – book a bed or room on Thanon Khao San, generally known as Khao San Road. It’s lively and fun, and provides easy access to the city’s old town.

But having moved slightly upscale in recent decades, Khao San Road no longer represents the best value area to stay in Bangkok. And with loud bars and a boozy vibe, it’s definitely not the most peaceful place to stay.

If you want to have access to the backpacker amenities but don’t want the noise and hassle, consider staying in the streets nearby, such as Thanon Rambutri or Thanon Phra Athit.

Monsoon season brings sudden surprises

During the annual monsoon, from approximately May to October, Bangkok’s streets occasionally turn into rivers. During this time of year, don’t be surprised if you have to camp out on an elevated street corner or in a 7-Eleven until the waters recede.

Malls are part of city life

While shopping malls are a dying breed in much of the west, they’re thriving in Bangkok. The city is home to some of the most over-the-top shopping centers in the world, which in contemporary Bangkok, have a dual function as (conveniently air-conditioned) social centers. Thais gather at the city’s more than 500 shopping centers to chat, eat, take selfies and occasionally make purchases, and so should you.

Tourists spray water guns out of a tuk tuk on Khaosan Road during the Songkran festival

Bangkok essentially shuts down during the Thai New Year

Every year around April, Bangkok grinds to a halt during Thai New Year, known as Songkran or the water festival. The tradition has its origins in the cleansing role of water, but these days it essentially means that Bangkok becomes ground zero to a multi-day, raucous water battle.

Whether you're into it or not, you’ll be splashed with water and/or smeared with baby powder. Don’t even attempt stepping outside your door with your Sunday best on and don’t expect your favorite restaurant, or that museum or monument to be open (shopping centers, inevitably, will be operating). Discover more about Bangkok's festivals and seasonal attractions in our guide to the best time to visit the city .

Weed isn’t exactly legal in Bangkok

In June 2022, marijuana and hemp were removed from the Category 5 narcotics list in Thailand. However, there are still many restrictions and smoking marijuana in public is not legal and is not recommended.

Yes, there's a sex industry, but it's easy to avoid

“One Night in Bangkok” is indeed a reality. But if you steer clear of the main red-light zones at night – namely Thanon Patpong, Soi Nana and Soi Cowboy – it's likely you won’t even witness this side of the city.

5 Best Clubs in Bangkok For Foreigners

As someone who’s been living in Bangkok for a while and who used to organize parties here, people expect me to tell them what the best clubs are in a split second.

At least once a week I have someone that drop me a message on Facebook or Instagram like:

"Hey mate, what is the best club in Bangkok right now ?"

And my answer is always the same (and it's really lame):

"It depends what you like"

Because I don't know you, bro.

What I like is probably not what you like.

What makes a good club for you?

A lot of girls?

A local vibe?

Do you like house music?

Or hip-hop?

Tell me what you want, and I'll tell you where to go.

So I can't tell you what is the best club in Bangkok right now, but I can tell you which ones I recommend the most.

Sing Sing Theater: The Best High-End Club

Sugar club: the best hip hop club in bangkok, levels: the best mainstream club, mustache club: the best underground club, onyx: thai club with banging edm, the pimp: the club for high rollers, how much is the entrance fee at a club in bangkok, the legal age to enter a club in bangkok is 20 years old. (same for the rest of thailand), is it safe to go to clubs in bangkok, what is the best hip-hop club in bangkok, what is the best edm club in bangkok, what is the best techno club in bangkok, what is the best underground club in bangkok, what is the best nightclub in bangkok for couples, what is the biggest club in bangkok, what's the best club in bangkok.

sing sing theater bangkok room

Sing Sing Theater (all the locals and expats call it Sing Sing), is the best club in Bangkok in my opinion.

If there's nothing special going on in another club, no specific request from anyone in the group, my go-to club in Bangkok is always Sing Sing.

Even after trying every club in Bangkok, it’s by far the venue I recommend the most.

First, for the design and the atmosphere.

It's different from other nightclubs, so it helps you disconnect from the rest of the world.

And if you’ve never been there, I can guarantee it's a must-see.

It's completely different from any other club you've ever seen.

In a good way.

It’s also always packed, every day of the week.

The music is always great too.

Even though you've got different DJs every night, the sound is always good.

Sure, it’s on the high-end side and a bit expensive but the entrance is free and they use premium alcohol for their drinks and have great cocktails.

That’s important too.

Mojo Tip: Book in advance if you got a large group or arrive early. The tables are ultra-limited.

sexy Thai dancer twerking at Sugar Club Bangkok soi 11 in Thailand

Hip-hop is the new pop and if you're not into EDM the best club for you is Sugar in Sukhumvit Soi 11 .

Sugar is a big club with both a local and international crowd, super hot dancers, international DJs, and all the old-school and latest hip-hop songs you like.

The club is also busy every night of the week.

And it’s full of beautiful and approachable girls.

We spend a lot of time there these days since my friends opened the rooftop bar Pastel , just across the road.

So we might see each other there.

party at Levels Club Bangkok in Sukhumvit soi 11

Levels Club and Lounge is the best commercial club you will find in Bangkok.

The music is mainstream, the ambiance is amazing, the lineup of DJs is great, and don’t get me started on the dancers.

You will also like the 2 girls for 1 guy ratio you got there on most nights.

And I let you imagine what it's like for ladies' night.

Go there with a group and get a VIP table to be seen by the single girls, and invite them to join you for a drink.

It’s in my experience the easiest club to pick up girls in Bangkok.

  • More about Levels

Vibrant red lights illuminate the atmosphere of the Mustache Club in Bangkok.

For house, techno, and underground music in general, the best club in Bangkok is called Mustache.

Mustache has been the top underground club for years now, with a great lineup of DJs that play all styles of underground music.

If mainstream music, or even pop and hip-hop isn’t your thing, then Moustache is for you.

Mustache is out of the main party streets of Bangkok, but it’s worth the detour to find a vibe that you’re not going to get anywhere else in the city.

onyx club bangkok

I love Sing Sing, Levels, and Sugar, but I mostly go there when I have a group of friends or clients.

Sometimes, I want something more Thai, with fewer expats and tourists.

For that, there is no better and wilder than Onyx.

Onyx is where a lot of young wealthy Thais go to party.

It’s fun, full of hot Thai women , and the music is always incredible.

The DJs and the energy here is similar to the biggest music festivals.

Mojo Tip: Onyx and the other clubs in RCA close at 2 AM, so get there early.

  • More about Onyx

the pimp bangkok girls

A gentlemen club is a different style of club, but it’s still a club at the end of the day.

The PIMP is not for everyone and it's definitely not for every night.

But when it's a special night with the boys or if you got something to celebrate, The PIMP is the best club of its type in Bangkok.

It might cost you more than at a regular club but you're guaranteed to have fun with really sexy girls.

Read the story about my first time there (link below) if you want more details.

Mojo Tip: Don't go there if it's too expensive for you. It's really for people who have money to blow.

  • More about The Pimp

The entrance fee at a club in Bangkok can be free, or go up to 500 THB per person.

You need to check for each club.

In a module, you will find an option to enable schema support. Once you enable this option, FAQ schema will be automatically added to your page. In case you are using an external plugin to add schema you can keep it disabled.

It is super safe to go to clubs in Bangkok. Or even to go out in Thailand in general. The security at nightclubs in Bangkok is excellent and clubbers in Thailand are usually pretty relaxed.

The best hip-hop club in Bangkok is Sugar Club.

The best EDM club in Bangkok is Levels.

The best techno club in Bangkok is Mustache.

The best underground club in Bangkok is Mustache.

The best nightclub in Bangkok for couples in Sing Sing Theater.

The biggest club in Bangkok is Spaceplus in RCA.

As you can see, it depends on what you like, who is with you, and what's more important for you that night.

All I know is Bangkok got so many options, and there's no night off here, so you'll have a good night if you're with the right people.

Now if you still don't know where to go clubbing in Bangkok, you can also check Party Bangkok's complete list of clubs in Bangkok to find more inspiration.

And if you want more information on Bangkok nightlife, check that page here .

Now tell me, what's your favorite club in Bangkok?

Good info you have on here. I’m coming in March. Where is the best club in Bangkok to pick up freelancers? Kinda like the old Insanity before it closed. Thanks.

' src=

The only place I see with obvious freelancers now are Levels or Mixx, the rest of the clubs only have regular girls now.
