Another preseason Clasico, Barcelona-Real Madrid, coming to U.S. this summer

In what has become a burgeoning, money-making tradition , FC Barcelona and Real Madrid will bring their renowned rivalry to the United States for a second consecutive summer.

They'll play El Clasico, as its known, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on July 29, as part of the second-year Soccer Champions Tour.

It will be a preseason match, of course. The tour — which will also feature Manchester United , Arsenal , Juventus and AC Milan — is not a tournament like some of its predecessors were. It is essentially eight one-off games, smack-dab in the middle of the Women's World Cup, billed by organizers as a "summer series" that will span California, Las Vegas, Texas and Florida.

But the headliner is the game of all games, perhaps the world's most celebrated sporting rivalry, at the grandiose stadium of all grandiose stadiums, Jerry World, the 105,000-seat home of the Dallas Cowboys that aspires to host the 2026 World Cup final .

El Clasico comes to the U.S.

When Barca and Madrid first brought their blood feud to the U.S. in 2017, the concept was ridiculed by some purists; but the exhibition game, at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, was a roaring success. The Miami Clasico drew 1.7 million viewers on ESPN platforms and a sellout crowd willing to pay several hundreds of dollars apiece for tickets. Players competed, genuinely. A 3-2 Barcelona win thrilled everybody involved.

It felt, at the time, like a watershed moment for the International Champions Cup , the preseason event that grew to 18 teams and 27 games spread across nine countries late last decade. In early 2020, organizers were in negotiations to inaugurate Southern California’s SoFi Stadium with a second stateside Clasico that summer.

But then came COVID-19. The ICC canceled its 2020 programming, fizzled during the pandemic, and devolved into a legal dispute between its parent company, Relevent Sports, and its mastermind, the legendary soccer promoter Charlie Stillitano. The men's ICC has not been played since.

Relevent still runs a women’s ICC and other ventures. This summer, it is working with England 's Premier League and Spain 's La Liga on two separate North American tours. But in 2022, the Soccer Champions Tour swooped in for Barca and Madrid, and organized a Clasico at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. (Barca won, 1-0, in front of a boisterous, sellout crowd.)

In its second year, the Soccer Champions Tour has expanded to feature two clubs each from Spain, England and Italy . Sixth Street, a global investment firm that has partnered with both Barca and Real Madrid , is the company behind it. AEG is producing it. Legends is a key partner. And Stillitano, according to a source with knowledge of the tour's evolution, has been involved as a consultant.

Preseason tour schedules

The Soccer Champions Tour announced its full 2023 slate Friday:

Saturday, July 22: Barcelona vs. Juventus — Levi’s Stadium, Santa Clara, California

Sunday, July 23: Real Madrid vs. AC Milan — Rose Bowl, Pasadena, California

Wednesday, July 26: Arsenal vs. Barcelona — SoFi Stadium, Inglewood, California

Wednesday, July 26: Real Madrid vs. Manchester United — NRG Stadium, Houston

Thursday, July 27: Juventus vs. AC Milan — Dignity Health Sports Park, Carson, California

Saturday, July 29: Barcelona vs. Real Madrid — AT&T Stadium, Arlington, Texas

Tuesday, August 1: AC Milan vs Barcelona — Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas

Wednesday, August 2: Juventus vs. Real Madrid — Camping World Stadium, Orlando

Kickoff times haven’t yet been determined. In their Friday news release, organizers said that “the matches remain subject to approval by the relevant football authorities,” but that is likely a formality.

Separately, Arsenal and Manchester United have organized a preseason friendly at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 22. United is also set to play Wrexham on July 25 in San Diego — presumably with a reserve team, because one day later, it is now scheduled to play Real Madrid in Houston. It then plays Borussia Dortmund on July 30 in Vegas .

Arsenal will also play the MLS All-Stars on July 19 in Washington, D.C.

The Premier League's own "summer series" will feature Chelsea , Newcastle, Aston Villa , Fulham , Brighton and Brentford, with games in Philadelphia, Atlanta, Orlando, New Jersey and Maryland.

For the third summer in a row, FC Barcelona are going to the United States for their preseason tour, with three top class fixtures scheduled against Manchester City on July 30, Real Madrid on August 3 and AC Milan on August 6, to be played in Orlando, New Jersey and Baltimore, respectively.

While last year’s tour was centred on the west of the country (Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Dallas), with the game in Santa Clara with Juventus cancelled due to illness in the squad, this year FC Barcelona will be touring the east, where the games will be accompanied by a series of institutional and social events to promote the club’s name in such an important market as the US.

The touring party departs Barcelona on July 28, ready for their first game two days later July 30 against Manchester City at the Camping World Stadium in Orlando, which holds 60,219 spectators and was the venue for several group stage fixtures at the 1994 World Cup .

This will be the first time Barça have ever visited the Florida city, and the first time they have played the side coached by former FC Barcelona man Pep Guardiola in North America. The last meeting between the Catalans and the current Premier League and Champions League trophy holders was on 24-8-2022 at Spotify Camp Nou, a charity fundraiser for ALS research organised by Juan Carlos Unzué.

Fourth Clásico in the United States Games between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid have become a common feature of summer tours in recent years, and this year we have another on August 3. The venue is the 82,500 capacity Metlife Stadium, New Jersey, home of the NFL’s New York Giants and New York Jets and venue for the World Cup Final in 2026. This will be the sixth time that Barça have played at the iconic venue and the fourth Clásico to be played in the USA .

Barça won all three of the previous encounters, 3-2 at the Hard Rock Stadium, Miami in 2017, 1-0 at the Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas in 2022 and 3-0 at the AT&T Stadium, Arlington in 2023.

FC Barcelona will be ending their trip on August 6 in Baltimore, another city that the team has never visited before, although it won’t be their first stateside meeting with AC Milan, who they beat 1-0 at the Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas last summer. This year they’ll be playing the rossoneri at the 71,000 capacity M&T Bank Stadium, home of the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens

All three games are part of the Soccer Champions Tour 2024, a friendly competition promoted by Sixth Street in association with Legends and AEG, and which is being contested for the second time this year, featuring Barça, their three direct opponents, and Chelsea .

FC Barcelona planning a tour to the United States

Raafay Humayun

Following the conclusion of the 2022/2023 football season in Spain, Mundo Deportivo reports that FC Barcelona are looking towards a proposed pre-season tour to the United States of America. Scheduled to take place in July of 2023, it would see Xavi’s men visit the country once again following their previous tour in the summer of 2022.

A major reasoning for the tour happens to be Barcelona’s economic situation. Finding a diverse plethora of revenue streams is currently a major objective for the Catalan giants, and tours such as the one being reported are a good avenue to increase their revenue generation.

Similar to the last time they traveled to the United States , FC Barcelona are expected to face the other two Super League advocates alongside them: Real Madrid and Juventus. Moreover, this time around, the Super League project seems like a much more approachable concept for teams that previously ended up opposing it, courtesy of the rulings in favor of the project made by legal authorities that frustrated UEFA and other domestic entities.

Furthermore, an expected favorable ruling by the Court of Luxembourg can also prove to be vital in making more and more clubs feel that the Super League project is actually an approachable outlet and may be reviewed.

However, Barcelona do intend on decreasing the length of their tour this time around in comparison to their 15-day period during their previous journey. Instead of taking part in 4 different games, it is rumored to be a 3-game tour during this visit.

The venues for this tour will reportedly be previously visited New York City, potentially the SoFi stadium in Los Angeles, and a third venue located somewhere North of the country this time around.

Barcelona tickets for US tour: Schedule, dates, host cities

kyle fansler

by Kyle Fansler April 17, 2024

barca us tour 2023 tickets

Barcelona is taking part in another US tour this upcoming summer, and tickets are now available for the club’s three-game slate. The Spanish side will be under new management when Xavi steps down at the end of the season. Therefore, the friendlies in the United States will be one of the first times supporters will have the chance to see the new boss. In addition to spectating Barcelona’s promising crop of young stars, the opposition will draw crowds for each of the games.

Barcelona is playing several familiar opponents across its three games in late July and early August. For example, Barcelona will play Manchester City, with the two intertwined in recent transfer windows. Plus, City manager Pep Guardiola has a lengthy history with the club. Also, Barcelona is playing Christian Pulisic and AC Milan in Baltimore. However, the marquee game yet again in Barcelona’s trip to the United States is another edition of El Clasico. For the third year in a row, Barcelona will play Real Madrid in the United States.

Barcelona US tour 2024: Where to buy tickets

Official tickets sold through Barcelona or Ticketmaster will come at a later date. However, you can lock in tickets to these three games now through Vivid Seats. World Soccer Talk readers can get $20 off their first ticket purchase with Vivid Seats when they use promo code  SOCCER20 (new customers only; ticket total must be more than $200):

  • Barcelona vs AC Milan – August 6, time TBD – Baltimore, MD –  Tickets .

barca us tour 2023 tickets

In the last two years, Barcelona has spent most of the time out west. Frequent stops in Las Vegas, Texas and California have allowed fans on that side of the country to see Barcelona in action. For the summer of 2024, each of the three games on Barcelona’s schedule is in the east. Moreover, these are three new stadiums.

The first of which is Camping World Stadium, which has hosted friendlies in 2022 and 2023. Then, MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, is the latest home for El Clasico. It joins the metro areas of Las Vegas, Dallas and Miami to have hosted this fixture. Finally, M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, MD, hosts its first friendly in two years. It is Barcelona’s first trip to both Camping World Stadium and M&T Bank Stadium. The Catalan club previously played at MetLife Stadium in 2017.

Other clubs playing friendlies in the United States

Just like Barcelona, each of the three teams the Catalans are playing has a schedule of games across the United States. For example, Manchester City is playing four games, while Milan and Real Madrid match Barcelona with three games. Most of these games are part of the Soccer Champions Tou r, a collection of club friendlies involving some of the top teams in Europe.

However, the action does not stop with these European giants. Fellow popular clubs Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal are playing friendlies in the United States. Aston Villa is joining the Premier League teams in playing games in the United States.

With so many teams coming Stateside this summer, it can be a maze to figure out when and where games are happening. The schedule of soccer friendlie s not only has that crucial information, but it also lays out where to buy tickets to each of the friendlies in the United States this summer.

Yes Live on Tour in 2024: Setlist, How To Get Tickets, & More

by Em Casalena May 2, 2024, 6:18 pm

English prog-rock legends Yes finally kicked off their 2024 tour in Lisbon, Portugal just last night. And it was a night to remember for Portuguese fans.

Videos by American Songwriter

The Classic Tales of Yes Tour was similarly amazing last year when it first launched, and this year’s leg is no different. The band was as committed as always to putting on one hell of a show. They delivered a varied but fan-favorite set list, which you can check out below:

1. “Machine Messiah”

2. “It Will Be A Good Day”

3. “Going For The One”

4. “I’ve Seen All Good People”

5. “America” (cover of Simon and Garfunkel)

6. “Time And A Word”

7. “Don’t Kill The Whale”

8. “Turn Of The Century”

9. “South Side Of The Sky”

10. “Cut From The Stars”

11. Medley: “The Revealing Science of God”, “The Remembering”, “The Ancient”, “Ritual”

12. “Roundabout”

13. “Starship Trooper”

If last night’s first concert is any indication, this is going to be a top-notch international tour. And it will likely be even better with the co-headlining addition of Deep Purple later this year.

The next stop of the Yes 2024 Tour will be on May 2 in Madrid, Spain at Riviera. The final stop on the tour will be on June 4 in London, England at Royal Albert Hall. Then, the band will kick off their tour with Deep Purple on August 14 in Hollywood, Florida at Hard Rock Live.

Challengers: Could Zendaya’s tennis husband hack the ATP Challenger Tour?

Challengers: Could Zendaya’s tennis husband hack the ATP Challenger Tour?

While the best tennis players in the world battle in one of the year’s most important tournaments in Madrid, the sport’s parallel universes align.

A whole bunch of top players are battling in the equivalent of baseball’s minor leagues in another part of Spain, in Italy and in France. They are playing Challengers.

You know where this is going.

There’s this tennis movie that isn’t really a tennis movie called “Challengers,” in which Zendaya stars as Tashi Donaldson. She’s the wife and coach of one of the world’s best players, but she was once the next big thing.

Then she got hurt and had to settle for coaching her partner to the top.

Now he’s in a slump ahead of the U.S. Open. So she gets him to sign up for the Phil’s Tire Town Challenger tournament, where they go up against her husband’s former best friend, who was also once Tashi’s boyfriend.

There’s some history there. Let’s leave it at that.

While basically everyone leaves the theater thinking about love triangles and threesomes, the minds of tennis heads drift to the dynamics of their sport, where top players really do show up in the tournaments which are, on paper, below their standing in the global game.

Challengers is not a tennis movie — but Zendaya has something big to say about the sport

Friday, May 3, Tomas Martin Etcheverry of Argentina, a top 30 player who nobody wants to face during the first week of a Grand Slam, was taking on world No 77 Arthur Rinderknech of the Netherlands at a Challenger tournament in Aix-En Provence in France.

Days before, Etcheverry had lost to Canada’s Denis Shapovalov in Madrid.

Frances Tiafoe, a second-round loser to Pedro Cachin of Argentina (the guy who asked Nadal for his shirt after their match two days later), was trying to grind out wins at the Sardegna Open in Cagliari. It didn’t go well for the 2022 U.S. Open semi-finalist, who was the top seed but lost 6-1, 7-5 to Federico Coria.

Italians Fabio Fognini — another former top 10 player — and Lorenzo Musetti, world No 29 in the rankings and a guy who is supposed to rival Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner in the future, were on home turf. O n the women’s side, Emma Navarro, world No 23 and climbing but less than a week after a third-round loss in Madrid, was seeking form in Lleida, Spain, in the WTA quasi-equivalent of a Challenger, a “125 event”.

This is happening a lot nowadays, even though the tournaments usually have all the glitz and glamor that Phil’s Tire Town offers — which is to say, none. Their appeal to these kinds of players is, instead, part necessity and part invention, going in tandem with the effort by the ATP and WTA to elevate the Masters 1000 tournaments , which are one level below a Grand Slam event.

Inside tennis' corridors of power: A fractured hall of mirrors where nothing is as it seems

By expanding their draws and duration from a week to 12 days, the tours have sold more tickets and created more days of prime tournament television content. They have also poked some holes in top players’ schedules if they lose in early rounds.

Take Tiafoe, who showed up in Madrid the weekend before the midweek start of the tournament. Because the top 32 players get a first-round bye, he waited nearly a week to play his first match, which he lost to Cachin. His next scheduled tournament, the Italian Open, was still at least 10 days away. He was suddenly looking at a vacuum of a fortnight while 3,500 miles away from home. So off to Cagliari he went — with the luxury of a wildcard — along with mainstays like Musetti, compatriot Lorenzo Sonego, and fellow American Chris Eubanks.

The increasing frequency of this scenario creates a dilemma for the players who live these events. If players like Tiafoe et al miss the glamor of a roofed stadium, huge crowds or just somewhere to change that isn’t a portable toilet, then their opponents are trying for a taste of that rarefied air. Their routes in are winning — and winning a lot — on a Challenger Tour that is getting more and more competitive, or being blessed by the capricious wild-card system, whose sense of arbitrary glory is dimmed by a combination of soft nationalism, draw-stacking, and the influence of companies such as IMG, which both run tournaments and represent talent.

Karue Sell, a tennis personality of some renown on YouTube who has returned to the pro game at 30 and is winning matches at the Porto Alegre Challenger in Brazil right now, says more wild cards should go to players who are in a rich vein of form on that tour, where the conditions (he’s not a fan of the balls in Brazil) and level of talent are a grind. Winning for two weeks is enough for a Grand Slam; why shouldn’t it be enough to get you into one?

How to fix tennis

Bernard Tomic, the Australian hot-headed tennis enigma, raised some eyebrows a few years ago when he said that there was little difference between a player ranked 60th and another ranked 250th.

He would not find a lot of people arguing today, at least in the men’s game.

Top players can drop down with little friction and going the other way is not so easy, but that doesn’t mean the elite are having it their own way. Improved competition has made lesser players better and the margins between rankings smaller.

Dominic Thiem, the 2020 U.S. Open champion who has struggled to get through a recurring wrist injury and motivational challenges, has spent plenty of weeks trying to find form on the Challenger Tour. It’s not gone well. Thiem is 2-3 in three Challenger events since November. Naomi Osaka, another former Grand Slam champion, was applauded for dropping down to play a WTA 250 (not even a Challenger) in Rouen because it showed seriousness about winning matches, the implication being that she was giving herself a chance to beat some also-rans. She lost in the round of 32.

“Everybody is playing really good tennis nowadays,” said Thiago Monteiro, a 29-year-old Brazilian.

Monteiro should know. He has spent much of his career bouncing between Challenger tournaments and the ATP Tour. He recently lost twice in eight days to someone named Orlando Luz, a 26-year-old Brazilian currently 333rd in the rankings, who has never climbed higher than world No 272.

Then Monteiro beat Stefanos Tsitispas, the world No 7, in Madrid’s second round, even though Tsitsipas had just made the final in Barcelona after winning the Monte Carlo Masters . Tsitispas knew he’d let down his guard against someone hungry and capable. He had forgotten the any-given-day dynamic every tennis player must respect.

barca us tour 2023 tickets

Cachin, who beat Tiafoe then pushed Nadal to three sets, has had a similar trajectory to Monteiro, logging plenty of weeks at Challenger events across the world the past decade. He said the only real difference between solid ATP Tour players and those he faces in the Challenger events is consistency.

Plenty of players can raise their level for a set or three, or even five with a top player. They serve hard, rip forehands, and have moments of exquisite touch. They can look like superheroes on a practice court. But their bodies and brains don’t allow it day after day, tournament after tournament, year after year.

“Can you be there all the time?” Cachin asked after his loss to Nadal.

Most can’t, which is why they are eating bad food, staying in bad hotels and struggling to break even, knowing they might be one or two good weeks away from the big show. And nothing excites them more, Monteiro said, than when a top player shows up with his fancy bag and designer shirts, sleeves patched with the names of blue-chip companies. Here comes a chance to prove to themselves and the dozen or so people watching in the bleachers that they have the goods, at least for a few hours.

Monteiro said he has felt it from both sides, salivating at chances to play someone like Thiem on any court, at any time, while knowing that, as one of the top players in Brazil, he has a massive target on his back if he plays a home Challenger.

“ Didn’t do really well,” he said the other day in Madrid, still a bit haunted by the memory of losses in Sao Leo and Florianopolis in Brazil and Oeiras in Portugal.

“Everybody wants also to beat me.”
