TripAdvisor's #1 Rated Tour in Irving, TX

My husband & I were in Dallas for a get-a-way without kids. We did the 1 1/2 hour Dessert Cruise. It was very relaxing & romantic. We enjoyed our gondolier, Conner, who was very knowledgeable about Venetian gondola rides. He sang a few songs & did a wonderful job! I did the message in a bottle for my husband & I loved the way Conner pulled it off for my husband to find the bottle floating in the river!! It was perfect! The views are beautiful!! Highly recommend this attraction for a romantic outing!!

We had such a great time with Jon as our gondolier. He was a gentleman, very professional and respectful, with a fabulous singing voice to boot! He even filled us in on the places to go and one of his recommendations was our hangout for the weekend, in fact. Jon was the perfect guide for our intro to Dallas, very well spoken, knowledgeable about the history, as well as the excitement that Dallas has to offer. Thank you Jon and GA!

Booked Gondola Adventures for my wedding entrance into ,venue on canal. The gondolier was very professional and allowed for an amazing entrance. The company is based in Las Vegas but was easy to communicate with Anne the contact person and she updated prior to the event. Well worth the money spent memories will last forever and even better than renting a limousine.

About a month ago, I trusted Gondola Adventures to help with my proposal to my girlfriend of 3 and a half years. While I was worried about never seeing anything in person before booking the gondola ride, they did a fantastic job. Everything I requested was executed beautifully by the staff and especially by our gondolier John. My fiancee and I now have memories that will last a lifetime, and I would highly recommend anyone thinking about giving this a shot to go for it.

My husband surprised me with my first gondola ride for my 36th birthday. Our gondolier was Joe, and he was amazing. He had a great voice and , was very informative, telling us about the area and actually making us want to see Opera, of all things. It was a beautiful day with breathtaking views and it made my birthday amazing.

I originally booked the gondola ride last year for one year wedding anniversary. Unfortunately tornado weather occurred the entire weekend so was given a 1 year reign check. So 2nd anniversary has rolled around so I decided to surprise hubby. Boy did Gondolier Jimmy exceeded my expectations. I opted for the manual 1 hour row with chocolates and sparkling cider. The weather was just right, Jimmy serenading, and me melting in my husbands arms. The scenery was picture perfect out of a book. Anne, you were right as Jimmy was great. Thank you for making my 2nd anniversary unforgettable. Will definitely be back :)

The Meandering Traveler

A Travel Blog with Travel Tips and Interesting Facts

Welcome to The Dalles! River Cruising along the Columbia and Snake Rivers

American Empress is among the small ships sailing the Columbia and Snake rivers of the Pacific Northwest. It's shown here near The Dalles. Photo by American Queen Voyages.

At the Oregon Trail’s western end, The Dalles, OR, was an 1800s-era hot spot in the quest for Pacific Northwest expansion. Back in the day, the  Columbia and Snake rivers  delivered adventure at best, a dangerous ordeal at worst.

Pioneers, soldiers, trappers, adventurers, gunslingers and gold miners headed out from here, loading their wagons onto barges or rafts.  In contrast, modern-day river cruisers thankfully sail these rivers in comfort and style.

Today’s cruisers float along the rivers with plenty of creature comforts and pampering. Along the route, there are diverse attractions, spectacular eco-beauty, wine tasting options and outdoor recreation.

Surprises await too. How about a world-class museum with 80 Auguste Rodin works of art? Or, alternatively, a neon sign museum? Yep, travelers will find both in or around The Dalles.

American Song is among the American Cruise Lines' vessels that cruise the Columbia and Snake rivers of the Pacific Northwest. Photo by American Cruise Lines

Earlier this week, The Meandering Traveler looked at examples of small ship cruises spotlighting one itinerary each for four cruise lines — American Cruise Lines, American Queen Voyages, Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic and UnCruise Adventures.

In addition, we talked about several ports of call along the Columbia and Snake rivers. In this blog, we’ll focus on the enticing options for touring in and around The Dalles , a popular port call. So, let’s go…

Port of Call: The Dalles

In the 1850s, Fort Dalles was built to protect people heading into the wilderness to settle following the so-called “Whitman Massacre.” That involved the killing of missionaries by a local indigenous tribe.

One interesting fact? This was the only military post between the Pacific coastline and Wyoming.

If you’re wondering what’s to see of Fort Dalles today, there’s only one structure that remains. That is the “Surgeon’s Quarters.”

That structure is now incorporated within the Fort Dalles Museum . The museum provides a glimpse into 1800s military artifacts, old medical equipment and household items.

Recreation and Wine

If cruisers seek activities in the great outdoors, The Dalles offers everything from windsurfing to fishing in the Columbia River. Among the “catches” you might reel in are walleye and sturgeon.

The Dalles, nestled on the fringe of Oregon’s wine country, is also now an area where vintners are planting and nurturing new vineyards. So, cruisers will find wine tasting opportunities ashore.

Although the area is part of the Oregon High Desert , it also has a long growing season. In addition, it offers a relatively warm climate.

Mount Hood and the Cascades provide an optimum environment for the growing of grapes around The Dalles. Photo by American Queen Voyages.

In addition, Mount Hood and the Cascades provide a viniculture boost. How so? They shield the area from the levels of rainfall experienced in the Willamette Valley.

Thus, vineyards and orchards are increasingly popping up in and around The Dalles. Likewise, local wine production has soared, and this destination now has a vibrant wine scene.

Columbia Gorge Discovery Center and Museum

One “must see” attraction for many river cruise guests interested in learning about the region’s eco-system is the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center and Museum, 5000 Discovery Drive, The Dalles.

What’s special is that it was built around the natural eco-system. So, the goal is to preserve the area. Visitors will learn about the geography of the region, how that’s evolved and what’s gone into 11,000 (yes, 11 millennia) of history.

Cruise guests love the daily raptor show. The center says that it’s the only place in the gorge where people can meet and learn about the area’s native birds of prey.

We’re talking, for example, about falcons, hawks, owls and eagles. All the birds of prey at the center are unable to be released back into the wild due to injuries.

Antique Airplanes and Automobiles

For antique automobile buffs and airplane enthusiasts, a different type of shore excursion beckons, though. It’s not natural but mechanical in nature.

Definitely auto or airplane enthusiasts should plan to visit the Western Antique Aeroplane and Automobile Museum (WAAAM).  The Meandering Traveler journeyed to this museum on an American Queen Voyages excursion.

We included it in our blog about Top U.S. Aviation Attractions earlier this year.

WAAAM is a museum that will delight antique aircraft and automobile fans. Photo by Susan J. Young

What’s to see? For example, the robust collection features more than 350 aircraft, automobiles, military vehicles and motorcycles from the 1910s to the 1970s.

We liked that many of the aircraft are “still flying” and also that, at times, the museum gives rides in its antique automobiles.

Also nice is that WAAAM groups the planes and cars from the same era together, along with artifacts, uniforms, news headlines and more from that year or era. It’s a great way to “sink back” into the decades of the past.

1917 Curtiss JN-4D Jenny

Stars of the aircraft exhibits are a  1917 Curtiss JN-4D Jenny featuring an OX-5 90 HP engine, a Piper Cub and collections that reflect WACO, Aeronca and Stearman.

Of the 130 or so cars, you’ll see a 1914 Detroit Electric , a Ford Model A, a Ford Model T , a Packard, a Studebaker or even a Locomobile. As for motorcycles, WAAAM displays Harley Davidsons, Indians, Cushmans and more. You’ll also see tractors, military Jeeps and engines.

More than 80 original Auguste Rodin works of art are on display at the Maryhill Museum near The Dalles. Photo by American Queen Voyages.

Maryhill Museum – Rodin Art and More

“Travelers to The Dalles can expect spectacular sunsets, awe-inspiring scenery, Native American culture and phenomenal wines, but most don’t expect a world-class art museum, pretty much in the middle of nowhere,” emphasizes Judi Cuervo.

She’s a veteran cruise journalist who talked with The Meandering Traveler about heading off on a shore excursion day at The Dalles in March 2022.

But Cuervo says spectacular art is exactly what visitors will get at the Maryhill Museum , 35 Maryhill Museum  Drive, Goldendale, WA. It’s not far from The Dalles.

The museum sports an incredible collection of Auguste Rodin artwork as well as period furniture and fashions.

For example, “visitors can view an elaborate gown worn by Queen Marie of Romania to the 1896 coronation of her cousins, Tsar Nicholas I and Tsarina Alexandra of Russia,” notes Cuervo.

In addition, visitors will peruse gilded furniture from Romanian royal palaces.

A tip? Cuervo suggests that visitors be sure to head to the second level where the Theatre de la Mode showcases post-World War II French couture fashion on miniature mannequins.

Most impressive and unexpected, though, is the museum’s Auguste Rodin Gallery. Travelers can gaze at more than 80 of his original works — bronzes, terra cottas, plaster studies and water sketches.

The Dalles: Neon Signs Galore

For a more electrifying experience in The Dalles’ city center, don’t miss the National Neon Sign Museum , 200 E. Third Street, The Dalles. Cuervo describes it as “flashy, funky and total fun.”

It’s lovingly cared for by David Benko , executive director. He purchased the museum’s home — a three-story, colonial-style brick building — from the city for $1.

In return, he restored the building, and now it’s a museum packed with “liquid fire.” Travelers will see vintage neon signs and a potpourri of other items too. Most pay homage to advertising and signage and their roles in American history.

Many river cruisers visiting the museum will likely be dazzled by the glowing, flashing signs that sport such names as Buster Brown, Greyhound , Cadillac and Coca-Cola .

But “the jewel in the National Neon Sign Museum crown is the first neon-gas light tube invented by Georges Claude , the French equivalent of inventor Thomas Edison.

Sailing to The Dalles

American Cruise Lines, which operates multiple ships on the Columbia and Snake rivers, sails into The Dalles, for example, with its 190-passenger American Harmony, a modern-series river vessel.  This intimate ship offers modern amenities, modern styling and a five-story, glass-enclosed atrium with a large domed skylight.

One voyage that calls at The Dalles? That’s the ship’s seven-night “ Columbia and Snake Rivers Cruise ” from Hayden Island, OR, to Clarkston, WA. In 2023 and 2024, numerous departures are operated between March and November. by American Harmony or other ACL vessels

Ports of call along the route include Astoria, OR; Kalama, WA; The Dalles , OR; and Pendleton, OR/Richland, WA. Seven-night fares for this voyage start at $4,505 per person, double occupancy.

Paddlewheel Voyage

Another line, American Queen Voyages, operates its 223-passenger American Empress on the Columbia and Snake rivers. Launched in 2002, the vessel — the largest paddlewheeler west of the Mississippi — received a major renovation/update in 2014; it’s received other enhancements since too.

American Empress is the American Queen Voyages vessel sailing on the Columbia and Snake Rivers of the Pacific Northwest U.S. Photo by American Queen Voyages.

Among its Pacific Northwest itineraries, American Empress  operates a nine-day Portland to Clarkston, WA, itinerary between March and November 2022-2024.

Ports of call include Astoria, OR; Camas/Washougal, WA; Stevenson, WA; The Dalles and Richland, WA. This American Empress sailing starts from $4,199 per person, double occupancy.

Columbia and Snake Rivers

Later this year in preparation for the 2023 river cruise season, we’ll cover a few more ports of call along the Columbia and Snake rivers.

Meanwhile, if you’re interested in learning more about all the options, contact your pro fessional travel advisor.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO An insider's Guide to Texas Day Trips

The Texas tourism board wasn't kidding when they said the Lone Star State was "like a whole other country." Enjoy award-winning art museums and mouth-watering meals in dynamic cities like Austin, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. Before your cruise take a walk on Texas' wild side, whether you camp on the beach in Galveston Island State Park, create a cowboy experience at a cattle ranch, or sunbathe along its hundreds-of-miles-long coastline.

If you do happen to plan your Texas vacation during the "winter" (a term that's relative around these parts) months of January and February, just pack a jacket — and an umbrella. While temperatures in Texas rarely fall below freezing — especially not in coastal Galveston — you never know when a scattered shower will pass. Likewise, make sure to wear plenty of sunscreen and drink lots of water during Texas' long summer, which can begin setting in as early as April and can linger until October or November.

7 best US river cruises

W hether you're fascinated by American history, culture and cuisine, or you've enjoyed river cruising in Europe but are now looking to explore closer to home, U.S. river cruises are an easy and enjoyable vacation option.

Choose from two main waterways for your U.S. river cruise: the Mississippi River — which flows through nine states from St. Paul, Minnesota, to New Orleans — or the Columbia and Snake rivers in Oregon and Washington. Some cruise lines also venture onto three smaller, lesser-known rivers: the Ohio, the Cumberland and the Tennessee. You can also explore New York's Hudson River on a fall foliage cruise.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Your choice of cruise line is equally limited. Just two companies offer multiple itineraries on U.S. rivers. American Cruise Line sails all the waterways mentioned above, while Viking offers itineraries solely on the Mississippi. Additionally, Lindblad Expeditions has introduced a food-and-wine-centric river cruise on the Columbia and Snake rivers.

Read on for our picks of the seven best U.S. river cruises. They range from seven to 15 nights and visit destinations in 16 states; itineraries take you through the colonial-heritage-rich Northeast, America's agricultural heartland and the pioneer routes of the Pacific Northwest.

American Cruise Lines' 8-night Music Cities Cruise

From Memphis blues and Elvis Presley's "Blue Suede Shoes" to Kentucky bluegrass and New Orleans jazz, American Cruise Lines' eight-night Music Cities Cruise sails you through a chronology of the U.S. music scene. You'll traverse three rivers (the Mississippi, Ohio and Cumberland) en route from Memphis to Nashville, or vice versa.

In Tennessee's two famous music cities, you'll have a chance to visit Elvis Presley's Graceland, stroll blues club-lined Beale Street and check out the Grand Ole Opry. You'll also visit Paducah, Kentucky, and Dover and Clarksville in Tennessee, where experiences include whiskey and bourbon tasting, tours of landmark art murals and, of course, Civil War history.

While cruising, you'll enjoy nightly entertainment that celebrates the region's musical heritage. American Cruise Lines offers this itinerary on four ships from April to October 2024, 2025 and 2026. Three of the ships — American Melody, American Symphony and American Serenade — are 180-passenger modern river ships launched in 2021, 2022 and 2023, respectively. The fourth, American Splendor, is a 180-passenger paddlewheeler that debuted in 2016.

Viking's 14-night America's Great River Cruise

Want the total Mississippi experience? You can cruise the entire length of this mighty river as you visit 14 cities in seven U.S. states on Viking's two-week sailing.

Available three times a year (in July, September and October), the America's Great River cruise begins in Minnesota (either St. Paul or Red Wing) and concludes in New Orleans, allowing you to experience an intricate tapestry of American history and culture.

There's eagle spotting in Red Wing and agricultural innovation in Quad Cities, Iowa. You'll enjoy Mark Twain lore in Hannibal, Missouri, and architectural landmarks, such as the soaring Gateway Arch, in St. Louis. As you cruise the lower Mississippi, you'll delve into civil rights history in Memphis; Civil War battles and historic architecture in Mississippi's Vicksburg and Natchez; Cajun and Creole music in Baton Rouge; and the legendary culinary treats and jazz of New Orleans.

All sailings are aboard the 386-passenger Viking Mississippi. Launched in 2022, it's currently the largest river ship in the U.S. and features three restaurants and an aft infinity pool.

American Cruise Lines' 8-Night Columbia & Snake River Cruise

If your vacation preferences favor mountain landscapes, wine tasting and pioneer lore, consider American Cruise Lines' eight-night Columbia & Snake River Cruise . You'll explore the Pacific Northwest from Portland, Oregon, to Clarkstown, Washington (or vice versa).

On the Pacific end of your voyage, you'll visit Astoria, Oregon — the oldest American settlement west of the Rocky Mountains. This coastal city at the mouth of the Columbia River is known for its Victorian homes, wineries, brew pubs, and Lewis and Clark heritage. Next, from Kalama, Washington, you can join an excursion to visit the remnants of the area around Mount St. Helens, which suffered a devastating eruption in 1980.

In The Dalles, you can enjoy a sommelier-led tasting of Columbia Valley wines, visit Multnomah Falls or get adventurous on a river kayak tour. During a call on Richland, Washington, you can admire the scenic beauty around the confluence of the Columbia and Snake rivers at Sacajawea State Park. More wine tasting or outdoor adventure awaits on the way to Clarkstown.

American Cruise Line offers this itinerary on five ships from April to October 2024, 2025 and 2026. Three of the ships (American Song, American Jazz and American Harmony) are 180-passenger modern river ships launched from 2018 to 2020. American Pride is a 150-passenger paddlewheeler launched in 2012, and American West is a 110-passenger veteran paddlewheeler launched in 1995.

Viking's 7-night New Orleans & Southern Charms

If you've never visited New Orleans, or it's been a while, take a Mississippi River cruise that sails round-trip from the Big Easy. They offer time before or after the cruise to enjoy the city's food, music and iconic architecture — plus the ease of a round-trip flight booking. Viking's seven-night New Orleans & Southern Charms itinerary focuses solely on ports in Louisiana and Mississippi, with an emphasis on historic architecture, Cajun culture and Civil War landmarks.

From Darrow, Louisiana, you'll stroll beneath canopies of towering live oak trees to visit historic mansions or glide through the bayou. More historic architecture, along with bird-watching, awaits in St. Francisville, Louisiana, and Natchez, Mississippi. Vicksburg, Mississippi, is home to one of the Civil War's most famous battlefields. Baton Rouge, Louisiana's capital, has something to satisfy every interest, from Cajun cuisine to tours of the restored World War II-era USS Kidd.

The cruise, which is available in November and December 2024 and January, November and December 2025, ends with a full day of exploration back in New Orleans before one last night aboard the 386-passenger Viking Mississippi.

American Cruise Lines' 7-night Hudson River Fall Foliage Cruise

Not only is the autumnal landscape in New York's Hudson Valley visually captivating, but the small cities and towns that line the river's shores are filled with fascinating early American history dating back more than 400 years.

Cruise the Hudson round-trip from New York City on American Cruise Lines' seven-night Hudson River Fall Foliage Cruise . You'll visit Catskill, home to the Hudson River School Art Trail and the Olana Historic Site, or explore more actively at the Hudson River Skywalk and Kaaterskill Falls. In Albany, founded in 1609, you can tour the newly renovated New York State Capitol building, built in the late 1800s; you can also visit the New York State Museum, which dates to 1836. Feel like apple-picking? That's an option here, too.

Next, during a call at Kingston/Hyde Park, you can tour the Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site, home to the 32nd U.S. president's library and museum. You can also head to the Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site, featuring an American Beaux-Arts mansion completed in 1899. The United States Military Academy at West Point, founded in 1802, is also on the itinerary, as is Sleepy Hollow. The Sleepy Hollow legend comes to life during a tour of the local cemetery where author Washington Irving is buried. Back in the Big Apple on day seven, you'll have time to explore before saying farewell to your ship.

Sailings are available from late September to early November 2024, 2025 and 2026. Sailings are onboard either the 100-passenger American Eagle, American Liberty, American Glory or American Legend (all built in 2023 or 2024), or the older 90-passenger American Star and American Independence, launched in 2007 and 2010, respectively.

Lindblad Expeditions' 7-night Columbia & Snake Rivers: Food, Wine and History Cruise

Nature-focused cruise line Lindblad Expeditions has partnered with Food & Wine magazine to offer a new seven-night Columbia & Snake Rivers: Food, Wine and History cruise on multiple dates in April, September and October 2024; there are also sailings in March, April, September and October 2025. The voyages will sail between Portland, Oregon, and Clarkston, Washington.

Complementing the itinerary will be gourmet Pacific Northwest cuisine and more than 40 regional wines curated by an onboard culinary team. All ingredients will be sourced from within 250 miles of the ship's route. A naturalist, historian and geologist will be on hand to guide you on excursions by foot, kayak, Zodiac and jet boat.

Off-ship experiences include sampling local beer and oysters in Astoria, Oregon; visiting Multnomah Falls or hiking Beacon Rock; and having a private vineyard visit and downtown wine walk in Walla Walla, Washington.

These sailings occur on two identical Lindblad ships: the 62-passenger National Geographic Sea Lion and National Geographic Sea Bird.

American Cruise Line's 15-night Grand Ohio River Cruise

Did you know that you can cruise from Pittsburgh to St. Louis? If exploring the central U.S. — Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois and Missouri — without driving is appealing, consider the 15-night Grand Ohio River Cruise offered by American Cruise Lines. You'll enjoy regionally inspired dining and eclectic landmarks along the Ohio and Mississippi rivers as you sail.

Over two weeks, you'll visit Native American burial grounds and archeological sites in West Virginia and learn about the underground railroad in Ohio. You can taste bourbon and explore the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory or the Kentucky Derby Museum & Horse Park in Louisville. Take time to appreciate American artistry at the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky. Rest up from your portside adventures during five days of scenic river cruising.

This itinerary is available from June to August 2024, 2025 and 2026 on the 180-passenger modern river ship American Melody and the 150-passenger paddlewheeler American Heritage.

River Cruise on Luxurious Radisson Boat

Equipped with ice-breaking technology, these huge fancy yachts are the only river cruisers running all year around. The round trip journey takes two and a half hours and floats past all the big sights like the White House, Novodevichy monastery and the Kremlin. There’s a large open air observation deck up top, while the main body of the ship houses a restaurant with a dance floor for a romantic post dinner dance. For a particularly romantic experience take one of the evening boats and admire the bright lights of the city skyline at night.

The most relaxing and picturesque tour that Moscow can offer: a great way to see the city center and its main attractions. This is a perfect alternative to exploring the city by car, if you only have time to do sightseeing during weekday rush hours.

Your English-speaking guide is eager to share every bit of their knowledge about the surrounding landscape, the architecture and historical details.

We conduct Moscow river tour on Radisson Flotilla boats all year around!  It’s warm inside during winter months, while there’s air conditioning during hot summer days. You may also treat yourself to drinks, lunch or dinner on board (drinks and food are not included in tour price).
