Combining a visit to Cape Town and a safari is easier than you might think, with several game reserves just a short drive from the Mother City. Many of these offer the opportunity to see the Big Five: lions, elephants, rhinos, buffalo and leopards. To help you plan your trip, we’ve picked some of the best game reserves for safaris near Cape Town.

Although South Africa’s most famous safari area is the Kruger National Park, to get there from Cape Town requires a 2½ hour flight and sometimes a stop in Johannesburg. For those with less time, these Cape Town safari reserves are ideal.

1. Aquila Private Game Reserve

Aquila is a great choice for a Cape Town safari day trip as it’s only a couple of hours outside the city. Safaris run three times a day, allowing plenty of options for those on a brief visit. If you’re very short on time, but not on cash, opt for the fly-in helicopter safari.

Aside from the Big Five, there are 170 bird species on Aquila’s 10,000-hectare reserve and big mammals like giraffes and hippos. Aquila also have an animal rescue centre and Cape leopard research facilities on site.

You can see the Big Five here, as well as giraffes, hippos and cheetahs. Aside from the wildlife you will spot on a game drive, Inverdoorn is also home to a cheetah rescue and rehabilitation centre.

4. Gondwana Game Reserve

Gondwana is a little over four hours outside Cape Town, but well worth the journey for the beautiful fynbos scenery alone, which you can learn about on a guided walk. Its flora, as well as the fauna, is what makes Gondwana one of the best game reserves for safaris near Cape Town.

The reserve introduced the first black rhino of recent times to the Western Cape; the rhinos were found in the region up until the late 18th century. All the Big Five are counted at Gondwana, alongside birds that are only found in South Africa – for example, the orange breasted sunbird. The 11,000-hectare reserve is home to lions, endangered Cape mountain zebras, elephants, kudu and springbok.

• Accommodation options: There are four options for those staying at Gondwana, including spacious villas for families or groups, and a tented eco camp.

5. Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

Sanbona is another of the best game reserves for safaris near Cape Town. More adventurous travellers can strike out on a walking safari at the Explorer Camp; alternatively, there are three lodges at which to stay. This huge reserve is 58,000 hectares. It’s possible to spot the Big Five and (if you’re lucky) other rare animals, such as aardvarks and caracals.

At Sanbona, you can also see rare white lions and riverine rabbits, the latter of which is only known to inhabit the central Karoo. And it’s not just flora and fauna: the San and Khoi-Khoi rock art found here dates back over 3,500 years.

It’s a question often asked by curious travellers thinking of planning a trip to the Mother City, unsure of whether they’ll be able to catch a glimpse of various fantastic creatures. Happily, the answer is a big ‘Yes indeed.’ Cape Town’s charm extends far beyond the urban centre, and one of its most alluring elements – beyond the mesmerising mountain views and glimmering Atlantic Seaboard – is its proximity to nature.

South Africa is renowned for its wildlife, and while the Western Cape may be a little more under-the-radar in this arena than other regions, it still has its fair share of nature reserves. Just a short drive from Cape Town you can spot the ‘Big Five’ (that ’s:  lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and African buffaloes) roaming the veld, learn about conservation efforts and spot whales breaching from the Atlantic Coast. 1.  Aquila Game Reserve

At just under a two-hour drive from the city, Aquila Game Reserve has certainly earned a name for itself as a top safari experience near Cape Town. The reserve helped reintroduce the Big Five to the Western Cape and is rooted in wildlife rehabilitation, land protection and community support. Whether you opt for a day trip or book a couple of nights, you can take a traditional safari in an off-road vehicle or choose to search for the Big Five from a quad bike. If you’re lucky, you may just spot the elusive Cape mountain leopard. After a day of wildlife thrills, soak in the infinity pool, refuel with some traditional South African cuisine or treat yourself to a spa afternoon. Accommodation ranges from rustic digs to plush cottages.

2.  Inverdoorn Game Reserve

A Big Five game reserve located around a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Cape Town, Inverdoorn Game Reserve is a wild escape into the arid plains of the vast, dessert-like Karoo region. A home to lions, elephants, giraffe, zebras, hippos and wildebeest, Inverdoorn also hosts a cheetah rescue and rehabilitation centre. Stay in a thatched roof hut tucked into the slopes of the valley, hike along rocky trails, look for elk and other wildlife on a game drive, or simply unwind and do nothing in this slice of nature. 5.  Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

Stretching across 58,000 hectares, Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is a pristine and unparalleled experience in the South African wilderness. A three-and-a-half-hour drive from Cape Town – taking in the stunning scenery of the R62 tourist route along the way – will get you to Sanbona, situated in the rugged and beautiful valley of the Little Karoo, just outside Montagu. Treat yourself to a weekend of wildlife viewings rooted in conservation, while unwinding in luxury safari tents or manor houses among the still plains. Elephants, lions and giraffes are all in the mix when you’re on a nature walk or a safari drive through the rolling hills and dramatic rock formations. Situated along the Garden Route in Mossel Bay, Gondwana Private Game Reserve is a little further from Cape Town (a four-and-a-half-hour drive), but certainly worth the journey if time is on your side. Eco-friendly camps and villas ooze luxury safari aesthetic, while also blending into the towering green hills. From spotting elephants wandering the reserve and lions napping in the sun, to learning about the native fynbos species and searching for sunbirds, falcons and cranes on a bird-centric safari, a weekend at Gondwana promises to be a wild ride.

7.  Grootbos Nature Reserve

Grootbos Nature Reserve embodies the meaning of ‘where the mountains meet the sea.’ Throw some forests into the equation, and you’ve got a spectacular eco-reserve. Just over two hours from Cape Town, Grootbos transports its guests deep into nature and offers an experience that’s notably different from a typical safari weekend. Set out from the elegant accommodation on a botanical walk to learn about endangered plants, look for over 20 species of mammal (including many types of antelope) and don’t forget to keep an eye out for whales appearing along the coast.

8.  Hermanus

Formerly a small fishing village, Hermanus has blossomed into a charming harbour town that attracts visitors from far and wide. Whale watching is what brings the crowds here, as Hermanus is graced with migrating southern right whales from June through to December. Try and spot them from the wind-swept beaches or join a boat tour and spend a day experiencing the splendour of these mighty marine mammals. Hop in your car, make that 90-minute journey from Cape Town and stay for a day or two in this whale watching paradise.

Top Five Game Reserves for Safaris Near Cape Town

Cape Town is known around the world for its stunning scenery, world-class restaurants, and fascinating cultural landmarks (including Robben Island and Bo-Kaap ). However, what many visitors don't know is that the city is also a convenient base for exploring some of the finest game reserves in the Western Cape. If you don't have time to head north to major South African reserves like Kruger or Mkhuze , don't worry; you can also look for safari animals in Cape Town's backyard. All of the reserves listed in this article are within a few hours' drive of the Mother City. They're also malaria -free.

Note: Driving times given below are based on departure from central Cape Town near the V&A Waterfront and may be considerably shorter or longer if you're staying in the suburbs. For the quickest travel times, make sure to plan your journey around off-peak traffic hours.

Buffelsfontein Game Reserve

Although safari purists may balk at the idea of a reserve that keeps its carnivores in separate enclosures, Buffelsfontein Game Reserve is nevertheless the most convenient option for those with limited time to spare. As a 1,600-hectare converted cattle ranch, the park is just over an hour's drive from central Cape Town and is home to four of the Big Five (lion, leopard, buffalo, and white rhino). Guests will also have the opportunity to spot cheetah , giraffe, zebra, and several iconic antelope species on a half or full guided game drive.

The half drive lasts for 1.5 hours, while the full drive takes around three hours and departs at 9 a.m. or 2 p.m. If you book an afternoon full drive on any day except Sunday, you'll also get to see the park's carnivores being fed. For a totally different safari experience, consider booking a mountain bike safari instead. If you do have time to extend your stay, there are a variety of accommodation options, from bush camps and self-catering chalets for budget travelers to more luxurious four-sleeper cottages. There's a restaurant, swimming pool, and bar on-site.

Aquila Private Game Reserve

​Located a two-hour drive northeast of Cape Town, Aquila Private Game Reserve  is a 4-star park offering half-day, full-day, and overnight safari options. The 10,000-hectare conservancy is home to the Big Five including rhino, elephant, lion, leopard, and buffalo. All five of these species have been reintroduced to the Western Cape after being driven to the brink of extinction by the big game hunters of the past. The park is also home to the Aquila Animal Rescue and Conservation Centre , which provides a sanctuary for rescued safari animals that are no longer able to survive in the wild.

If the idea of a traditional safari vehicle is a little too tame, consider booking a horse-ride or quad bike safari instead. Although the park is close enough for a day trip from Cape Town, overnight accommodations include a luxury lodge and several exquisite chalets. The chalets offer indoor fireplaces and outdoor showers, allowing you to fully appreciate the magic of life in the bush. Other useful amenities include a bar, a restaurant, an infinity pool, and a spa. Aquila also offers transfers from Cape Town hotels via mini-bus, private vehicle, airplane, or helicopter.

Inverdoorn Game Reserve

Half an hour beyond Aquila Private Game Reserve lies  Inverdoorn Game Reserve , another 10,000-hectare protected area in the Klein Karoo. Inverdoorn achieved Big Five status in 2012 with the introduction of a herd of elephants. It is also home to non-profit organization Western Cape Cheetah Conservation and visitors are given the opportunity to see these magnificent predators up close. Since 2018, the reserve has implemented a strict no-touch policy in accordance with the latest ethical conservation practices.

The park also offers a choice of 4- and 5-star accommodation options. There's a tented camp and a series of well-appointed chalets, while the multiple-room guest houses are perfect for families or friends traveling together. For the last word in luxury, opt for a night in the exquisite Ambassador Suite. Overnight guests are invited to join a walking safari at sunrise, when the animals of the reserve are at their most active. The route to Inverdoorn takes you through the Cape Winelands ; consider stopping for a tasting along the way.

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve 

From Cape Town, you can drive to Sanbona Wildlife Reserve in approximately three hours. Nestled at the foot of the Warmwaterberg Mountains, the reserve is a Klein Karoo paradise known for its indigenous wildlife and ancient rock art . Measuring some 54,000 hectares, it is also made special by its vast, sprawling landscapes. You'll find the Big Five here, as well as cheetah and smaller native mammals including the rare riverine rabbit. The wide range of activities on offer include birdwatching, nature walks, rock art tours, and stargazing. Boat safaris on Bellair Dam offer a different game-viewing perspective. 

Since game drives take place at sunrise and sunset, most visitors to Sanbona Wildlife Reserve opt to stay overnight. There are three luxury lodges to choose from, including a tented camp with spa baths, private decks, and a fine-dining restaurant. If you want to experience Africa at its most authentic, consider a walking safari with a stay at the back-to-basics Explorer Camp. A kids' program , childminding services, and a dedicated family lodge make this the ideal choice for those traveling with children. 

Grootbos Private Nature Reserve

When you've ticked the Big Five off your bucket-list, consider taking a two-hour drive southeast of Cape Town to coastal  Grootbos Private Nature Reserve . Located at the meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, the reserve is the ultimate destination for spotting the Marine Big Five: namely, great white sharks, southern right whales, bottlenose dolphins, African penguins, and Cape fur seals. The lodge offers coastal safaris in association with Dyer Island Cruises . Cage diving with great white sharks , whale-watching tours, horse-riding, nature walks, and botanical safaris are also offered. 

The reserve, which measures 2,500 hectares, is home to almost 800 different plant species; 100 of which are endangered and six of which were discovered for the first time on site. Its protected milkwood forests are over 1,000 years old. In order to have enough time to explore its wonders, you can stay overnight either at the Garden Lodge, the Forest Lodge, or in a private luxury villa. Each eco-friendly option is designed to complement the reserve's incredible natural beauty. Amenities range from tranquil swimming pools to organic 5-star dining.

Many visitors who rate Aquila poorly say the game reserve is too much like a zoo. It is important to note that this is a relatively new and small game reserve.

If you expect the quintessential rolling grasslands of Africa when you visit Aquila, you are likely to be disappointed.

2. Inverdoorn Game Reserve

Inverdoorn is an excellent Big 5 safari option for two reasons: the proximity of the game reserve to Cape Town and its relatively large size. The 2.5-to-3-hour drive from Cape Town makes Inverdoorn Game Reserve easily accessible for an overnight safari or weekend getaway.

Safari activities at Inverdoorn include morning and afternoon 4x4 game drives, guided bush walks with giraffes (depending on conditions), visits to the Cheetah Rescue & Rehabilitation Centre (no animal interactions allowed), and stargazing in the Klein Karoo.

For families with young children, Inverdoorn offers babysitting services and welcomes guests with kids at their 4-star lodges. Children over the age of 4 years are allowed on game drives.

Inverdoorn Game Reserve is not open to day visitors and self-drive safaris are not permitted. This limits your options somewhat but it also makes the safari experience in Inverdoorn more exclusive and crowd-free.

For this reason, Inverdoorn is not the cheapest Cape Town safari destination, but the quality of the Big 5 safari experience in Inverdoorn Game Reserve is worth the little extra spend.

4. Garden Route Game Lodge

The Garden Route Game Lodge is a small, budget-friendly game park located on South Africa’s famous  Garden Route . This budget safari destination features the Big 5: lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhino, though leopards are rarely seen. They also have cheetahs which are a real treat.

Located around a 4-hour drive from Cape Town, between Swellendam and George near the small town of Albertina, the Garden Route Game Lodge is an excellent family stopover.

Safari activities at the Garden Route Game Lodge include morning and sundowner game drives, guided walking safaris, kids' activities like cheetah tracking, fishing, and guided walks, as well as mountain biking for those with their bikes. For those who want a little pampering, there is an on-site spa offering steam rooms, saunas, and several luxurious treatments.

There are a variety of lodge rooms, chalets, and suites, including family units. The rooms are en suite, and air-conditioned with modern amenities. Facilities include two swimming pools, a restaurant, a lounge, a spa, and a feature garden.

5. Gondwana Game Reserve

Gondwana Game Reserve, at 384 km / 238 miles, is the furthest of the Big 5 Cape Town Safari options. Gondwana is roughly a 4.5 to 5-hour drive from the Mother City. It is, however, at 11 000 hectares / 26 000 acres, the second largest game reserve on our list, after Sanbona Wildlife Reserve .

The animals in Gondwana, aside from a 1000-ha endangered animal camp, roam freely and are completely wild. Safari activities at Gondwana Game Reserve include 4x4 game drives, mountain biking, guided bush walks, private guided walking safaris, fishing trips, and conservation activities. They also offer spa treatments, bush dining experiences, and a Junior Ranger Program for kids. Children over the age of 2 years are permitted on game drives and kids under 2 years can be taken on shorter game drives with the dedicated Junior Ranger Guide.

The Gondwana Private Game Reserve does not offer day safaris or self-drive safari options. They do permit one-night stays at some of their lodges but typically Gondwana safaris require a two or three-night stay.

Transfers between Gondwana and Cape Town, or the airport in George, can be arranged. They do offer accommodation specials and seasonal discounts for South African Residents.

How much does a Gondwana Safari cost?*

Gondwana is more expensive than Inverdoorn, Aquila, and the Garden Route Game Lodge. The cheapest Gondwana safari options cost slightly less than Sanbona's best safari deals. So, if you are booking in the low season or you catch a safari special Gondwana could be cheaper than Sanbona or similar in price.

Gondwana Game Reserve is a luxury safari destination with upmarket private villas, lodges, and tented camps. They also feature a few affordable luxury options at their Kwena Lodge and their Bush and Fynbos Villas.

Expect to pay between R3,500 / US$ 185 and R9,000 / US$ 477 per person per night for a Fynbos or Bush villa. There are cheaper bed & breakfast (half-board) safari packages and more expensive full-board options. These are ideal for families with children and private groups.

At Kwena Lodge a twin or double room costs from about R5,500 / US$ 290 per person per night (half-board) and about R7,000 / US$ 370 per person per night (full-board). The rates vary according to the high and low seasons, with peak times becoming more expensive.

Top 10 safaris near Cape Town

Kruger National Park may be South Africa’s safari poster child but its lodges and surrounding private reserves can sometimes be a bit of a hassle to get to from Cape Town – plus they all require malaria precautions. The good news is that there are plenty of other options for safaris near Cape Town, all easily accessible and in malaria-free regions. Some can be reached by car in a couple of hours, others are a short flight away – but all rival Kruger in their beauty and diversity.

Sanbona Dwyka Tented Camp and Explorer Camp

If you are looking for a great Big Five safari near Cape Town, the Sanbona Wildlife Reserve in the Little Karoo, along Route 62, is the place to go. It’s one of South Africa’s largest privately-owned game reserves and at the Sanbona Dwyka Tented Camp , you’ll find nine secluded tents set in a horseshoe bend of a dry Karoo ravine and embraced by striking rock formations – a nod to the Khoi-San hunter-gatherers who once roamed this land. It’s an impressive setting, with five-star facilities to match – think outdoor showers, private decks with Jacuzzi and spa treatments. Then there are the activities, which include rock art excursions, boat safaris, stargazing, and of course game drives. Adventurous souls may also want to try the Sanbona Explorer Camp – the more basic, seasonal camp operates from October to April and offers guests an authentic walking experience that is as close to nature as you can get.

Bushmans Kloof

Located in the northern Cederberg Mountains , the serenely beautiful Bushmans Kloof is another beautiful option for a safari near Cape Town. A visit to one of its 130 Bushman rock art sites dating back an impressive 10,000 years is a must during your stay, as is a nature drive through this South African Natural Heritage site, which boasts an abundance of indigenous flora and fauna. Returning to the lodge you’ll be spoiled to the hilts with spa treatments, decadent afternoon teas and gourmet cuisine – Bushmans is in fact renowned for its rather magical outdoor dining experiences. If you want to impress your other half (or better yet, are ready to pop the all-important question), make sure to book a romantic private dinner at the secluded Kadoro cottage.

Grootbos Forest Lodge

Forest Lodge is one of three accommodation options at the tranquil Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, overlooking the wide sweep of Walker Bay. Wind your way through an ancient Milkwood forest to get to one of 16 stand-alone brick-and-timber suites where the views are second to none. Whether you lounge in bed, take a bath, or refresh in the outdoor shower on your private deck, the ocean is omnipresent. It might not be the place for Big Five wildlife-watching, but the lodge offers a host of fabulous activities, including coastal and marine safaris, botanical 4×4 tours, horse riding and whale watching. In the evening, a world of flavour awaits in the restaurant with ingredients fresh from the onsite organic farm.

Morukuru Beach Lodge

Hermanus may be South Africa’s most famous whale-watching spot, but it’s worth venturing further to the new and very off-the-grid Morukuru Beach Lodge in the De Hoop Nature Reserve. De Hoop is remote in the very best sense of the word; there are only a handful of luxury lodges, integrated perfectly into an isolated landscape marked by blindingly white sand dunes and the crashing waves of the Indian Ocean. Visit between July and October and you’ll be able to see the migrating Southern Right whales putting on a bit of a show without even having to leave the lodge. Morukuru doesn’t offer a safari in the traditional sense but the whales, nature drives and other activities including sand boarding, marine walks and beach picnics more than hold their own, as do the five enormous suites, boasting a contemporary design with wow factor and awe-inspiring sea or dune views.

The above camps are all fantastic options to drive out to from the Mother City but if you’re willing to travel just a little bit further, you’ll find your options expand tenfold! The below camps are all within short flying distance from Cape Town or can be built into a Garden Route road trip.

Shamwari Eagles Crag

Eastern Cape

Eagles Crag , one of seven lodges that form part of the Shamwari Game Reserve , is another of the easily accessible safaris near Cape Town. Nine glass and stone suites and a large main area are tucked away into a deep ravine, with uninterrupted views of the surrounding rock faces and soaring eagles. Twice-daily Big Five game drives, guided walks and the opportunity to see the region’s aloe and acacia plants are all part and parcel of a stay here. You can also delve into the area’s wildlife conservation thanks to various facilities at the reserve, including the Ian Player Rhino Awareness Centre, Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre and Born Free Big Cat Sanctuaries. For the ultimate relaxation, the spa awaits with various treatments, a hydro bath, sauna and steam bath.

Gorah Elephant Camp

Set within a 5,000-acre private concession in the Eastern Cape’s Addo Elephant National Park (make it part of your Garden Route itinerary or fly to Port Elizabeth), Gorah epitomises old-world glamour. Home to the densest population of elephants on the planet, you can watch the majestic mammals whilst sipping tea on the veranda of the stately manor house. If you do feel like venturing out to see the likes of lion, rhino and buffalo (as well as more elephant of course), hop on a game drive, walking safari or even a horse ride. Back at the lodge, the 11 tented suites will make you feel like you’ve travelled back in time to the 1900s thanks to the sparkling crystal glasses, polished silver and white linen dotted around. And it’s all brought up to date with modern amenities – including the best showers we’ve ever had on safari!

Gondwana Kwena Lodge

Garden Route

As far as safaris near Cape Town are concerned, Gondwana is a great family-friendly option. Kwena Lodge  is one of four accommodation options (the others including a tented eco camp and several private villas). A modern twist on the traditional Khoi-San dwelling, the 14 dome-shaped suites feature 180-degree views, amazing skylights for stargazing and clay pot fireplaces. The infinity pool at the main lodge makes for a refreshing dip and families will be kept entertained on enjoy thrilling game drives. Afterwards, Mum and Dad can head to the spa whilst the little ones are being entertained with the excellent Junior Rangers program. In the evening, everyone converges for a traditional braai at the boma.

Kwandwe Great Fish River Lodge

Located in the Kwandwe Private Game Reserve , Great Fish River Lodge is a great way to end a Garden Route trip . The lodge itself is classic yet contemporary and set along the lush green banks of the river after which it is named. The nine suites let nature flow in thanks to glass doors, outdoor showers and expansive viewing decks with private plunge pools. It’s still worth heading out into the wilderness though as game drives will surely reveal most members of the Big Five – and there’s options of walking safaris and (at an additional cost) tracking and darting expeditions with Rhino Conservation. Back at the lodge, recount the day’s experiences while feasting on African dishes in the boma under a starlit sky.

Tswalu Tarkuni Lodge

Thanks to direct flights from Cape Town, a quick safari sojourn to the Tswalu Kalahari private game reserve is now entirely possible – and very worth the trip. A “green” desert, the huge reserve offers semi-arid grassland with open savannahs that are rich in a remarkable range of habitats and apart from big game (including the desert-adapted black rhino) you can also expect to see small mammals such as meerkat, aardvark and pangolin. As for accommodation, choose Tarkuni if you’re travelling in a group or en famille. During your trip to Cape Town , within a short drive, you can find a wide range of private game reserves, like Aquila Games Reserve and Sanbona Wildlife Reserve. The Big 5 (elephants, lions, rhinos, leopards, and African buffalos) are the creme de la creme of the South African safari world, and you can encounter these amazing animals in a conservation setting. So, with that in mind, let’s dive in and discover the seven best safaris near Cape Town.

1. Aquila Private Game Reserve

This 10,000-hectare reserve is known for its conservation efforts and excellent customer service. Aquila holds nothing back when it comes to its guests. There are three, half-day safaris available every day — early morning, afternoon, sunset, and options for full day tours and overnight packages. Sightings of the Big 5 are possible here, along with giraffes, hippos, antelope, and 170 bird species. Aquila’s main goal is to preserve and protect African wildlife. They have an on-site animal rescue center as well as leopard research facilities. 

• Distance from Cape Town : 2 hours (176km) northeast of Cape Town in the historic town of Touws River. This is a great option for those looking for a day trip only.
• Accommodation available: 4-star lodge offers standard rooms, family suites, and luxury cottages that include their very own fireplace. A restaurant, spa, infinity pool, wet bar, cigar lounge, and children’s entertainment center are also included.
• Other activities: Horseback safari, quad bike safari, fly-in safari (arrive at the reserve via helicopter!)

2. Garden Route Game Lodge

This reserve offers two safari tours daily, each lasting roughly 2–3 hours. One departs in the early morning and the other in the late afternoon since these are the times the animals are the most active. On the tour, you are likely to spot four out of the Big 5; lions, rhinos, elephants, and buffalos. You can also see giraffes, zebras, various antelope species, and free-roaming cheetahs. Overnight guests are offered sunrise and sunset safaris along with a tour of the reptile center, which houses 28 different snake species, Nile crocodiles, and tortoises.

• Distance from Cape Town: 3 hours 40 minutes (350km) east of Cape Town in the village of Albertinia. It is possible to do it as a day trip from Cape Town, but staying the night is probably more comfortable.
• Accommodation available: Room options in the 3-star lodge range from standard rooms to family and luxury suites to honeymoon chalets. A full restaurant with terrace dining is on site.
• Other activities: Families traveling with kids will love the 'Kids on Safari' option, which allows children to explore and learn about the reserve under the guidance and supervision of a field ranger. Bird fanatics will enjoy watching over 50 species of rare and native birds throughout the reserve. There is also a spa and pool at the lodge that’s perfect for unwinding after a long day of safari. 

3. Inverdoorn Game Reserve

As a self-proclaimed “luxury” safari, Inverdoorn may not be the cheapest on the list, but it’s certainly one of the most catered and comfortable. The reserve sits on 10,000 hectares in the arid Klein Karoo region. The grounds teem with birds and wildlife, including the Big 5, giraffes, zebras, hippos, impalas, springboks, and more. Inversdoorn is one of the most popular safaris near Cape Town due to the high level of service provided by the staff and its proximity to the city.

Inverdoorn goes to great lengths to protect and preserve the animals that call their reserve home. RhinoProtect, a pricey security and research program specifically designed for the reserve’s resident rhinos, goes above and beyond to keep the animals safe from poachers. The Cheetah Sanctuary is another highlight. Visitors can view the fastest animals on earth partaking in running exercises that ready them for their release into their natural environment on the reserve.  

• Distance from Cape Town: 2 hours 30 minutes (200km) northeast of Cape Town in Breede River.
• Accommodation available: The 3-star Izibi Safari Lodge has stylish guest houses, up-scale chalets, and posh suites. Relaxation is the name of the game here, and it features first-class culinary dining and poolside lounging.
• Other activities: 2-day one-night safaris, private safaris, sunrise/sunset safaris, walk with giraffes, cheetah encounters, cheetah runs.

4. Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

Sanbona is the biggest reserve on the list, with 58,000 sprawling hectares. Situated at the foot of the Warmwaterberg Mountains, the impressive landscape and some unique and rare wildlife are what sets Sanbona apart from the others. Another unique selling point is the ancient rock art that can be viewed in the reserve. Dating back 3,500 years, the fascinating drawings depict the rituals and spiritual beliefs of the ancient tribes, the San and the Khoi-Khoi.

Safaris take place at sunrise and sunset and last for roughly 3 hours. Visitors can experience multiple landscapes and habitats as well as the chance to see the Big 5, iconic white lions, cheetahs, and rare riverine rabbits. Sanbona also offers boat safaris, creating a new and innovative way to tour the reserve.

• Distance from Cape Town: 3 hours 15 minutes (256km) east of Cape Town in the town of Montagu. The establishment doesn't entertain day trips due to the sheer size of the reserve. Hence, spending the night is mandatory.
• Accommodation available: Environmentally-friendly 5-star accommodation in the form of luxury tented lodges with private spa baths. Or book an entire manor complete with a private bar, pool, and bathrooms.
• Other activities: Birdwatching, walking and hiking trails, rock art tours, and one of the best stargazing in South Africa. For those traveling with children, there’s a kids program that caters to little ones’ interests while educating them on the importance of conservation.

5. Fairy Glen Private Game Reserve

Claiming to be the closest Big 5 safari to Cape Town, this reserve does a lot of business with day-tripping tourists. While it’s true the Big 5 do call this reserve home, even the reserve admits that spotting a leopard is a rare occurrence. Located at the foot of the Brandwacht Mountains, surrounded by vegetation, fauna, and flora, Fairy Glen is rugged, natural, and full of wildlife. You will feel days away from the big city even though the reserve is roughly an hour away from Cape Town.

This game reserve in the Western Cape offers half-day safaris (with or without transportation from Cape Town) as well as overnight safari options. The tours can be conducted by vehicle or on horseback. A nature walk to the Brandwacht Dam is included in the overnight safaris, and there is a chance to see 250 bird species. 

• Distance from Cape Town: 1 hour 20 minutes (113km) from Cape Town in the town of Worchester. This is the closest day-trip option on our list.
• Accommodation available: Overnight safari guests have the option to stay in either the standard or luxury chalets. Bar and Braai (BBQ) facilities and an outdoor pool are included with the accommodation.
• Other activities: Hiking trails.

6. Grootbos Private Nature Reserve

This 2,500-hectare private nature reserve is an award-winning eco-tourism destination near Cape Town in South Africa. Overlooking the pristine beaches of Walker Bay, this reserve has 118 species of birds and 29 mammal species as well as ancient forests that are home to rare and endangered plants. The reserve is especially known for its marine safaris during which you can spot whales, sharks, dolphins, seals and penguins. The Grootbos Foundation is dedicated to conserving the local wilderness and has pioneered sustainability initiatives in the region.

• Distance from Cape Town: 2 hours (160km). 13km past Stanford on the R43.
• Accommodation options: Two lodges have private suites with private decks, fireplaces and outdoor showers. You can opt to stay in a private luxury villa as well. 
• Other activities: Marine safaris, birdwatching, hiking trails, horseback riding, whale watching and botanical tours. 

7. Buffelsfontein Game Reserve

Buffelsfontein, a former cattle ranch, reopened in 2002 as a 1,600-hectare game reserve. Buffelsfontein is home to four of the Big 5: lions, buffaloes, white rhinos and giraffes. Travelers can also see cheetahs, zebras, kudus, elands and oryxes in the reserve. Game drives take place twice a day and must be booked in advance. Travelers can go for either a three-hour game drive or one that lasts for 90 minutes. Overnight accommodation is available in bush camps, chalets and a guesthouse. The reserve also has a restaurant and a bar.

• Accommodation Options:  A wide variety of accommodation options, ranging from bush camps and basic chalets to luxury cottages and guesthouse rooms, are available for travelers.

Most Luxurious Safari Lodge

Gondwana is one of the best luxury safari lodges in the Western Cape. They have the widest range of lodges available from eco-tented camps to bush villas, all superbly furnished. Compared to other lodges, they have much more facilities including a pool, lounge, dining, and bush spa. Besides seeing the Big 5 on game drives, they also offer mountain biking, bird watching, and nature walks. Customized itineraries can be arranged if you want a personalized experience.

Best Safari Lodge Near Cape Town

Most of the Western Cape safari lodges are very remote. If you want to stay close to Cape Town, Grootbos Private Nature Reserve is the best option. It’s less than a 2-hour drive from Cape Town, however, we’d highly recommend taking the coastal route. Between Gordan’s Bay and Hermanus, you’ll have the most stunning ocean views. Stony Point in Betty’s Bay is a popular place to see African penguins. Harold Porter Botanical Garden nearby is also a beautiful landscape to explore. So while Grootbos is 2 hours from Cape Town, you might as well make a day of it with these lovely stops.

Best Safari Lodge To See Big 5

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is the largest privately owned safari park in South Africa. Size-wise it’s the closest experience in the Western Cape to the Kruger National Park. The reserve doesn’t allow day visitors or self-driving which means it’s less crowded and you get a certified ranger. At sunset or sunrise, they’ll take you on a 3 hours drive through the quartz fields of Karoo. Have your binoculars ready cause there’s a high chance you’ll see the big 5. Besides safaris, they have nature walks, bird watching, and stargazing. Accommodations include basic camping, family lodges, manor house suites, and luxury tents with heated plunge pools.

Best Safari Lodges For Families

• Gondwana Game Reserve  – You’ll find the most luxurious range of 2-4 bedroom family villas here. But if you want the ultimate stay, have a look at Ulubisi House. It has 3 bedrooms and a private pool with stunning views. Plus you’ll have a private ranger, chef, and butler. Service will be world-class.
• Aquila Private Game Reserve & Spa – Not far from Cape Town, this lodge has something for everyone. It has an active kids club with mini golf, an adventure zone, playgrounds, and junior ranger programs for older children. Their best family accommodations are 2 and 3-bedroom cottages. The resort has a large pool, a spa for adults, a top-class restaurant, and game drives that can include horseback and quad bikes. Essentially, they have more family activities on offer compared to other safari lodges.

Safari Lodge For Couples

It’s hard to pick “the best” since all the safari lodges in the Western Cape are incredible. But if you’re looking for a unique experience on top of the game drives, here are a couple of options that stand out:

• Sanbona Wildlife Reserve – This is one of the most highly-rated lodges in the Western Cape. Whether you stay in the Dwyka tented lodge or Tilney manor, you can expect complete luxury. Both have private bathtubs so you can relax after game drives.
• Kagga Kamma Nature Reserve – With accommodation in caves, this is one of the more unique experiences. Make sure you book the Honeymoon cave to make the most of a romantic stay. They also offer customized packages for couples.

1. Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

The Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is a ‘big-five’ free-roaming game reserve in the Little or Klein Karoo. There are four uniquely located safari lodges to choose from. The Dwyka Tented Lodge has 9 luxury tents each with a heated plunge pool, private ensuite, and shared dining areas. For families of four, the Gondwana Family Lodges may be more suitable. Gondwana camp has a large shared pool, play areas, and kids’ excursions and activities. Inclusive with all bookings are two daily nature drives, guided walks, and meals. Star-gazing the incredible Karoo sky at night is a bonus for all stays. As one of the more expensive safari lodges in the Western Cape, you get all the luxuries you pay for.

2. Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve and Wellness Retreat 

Bushmans Kloof is just three hours north of Cape Town in the Cedarberg mountains. On the reserve, you can encounter rare Cape mountain zebra, small species of buck, and wildcats. There’s a dazzling array of flora including fynbos, and 130 unique ancient rock art sites. The 5 -star lodge has rooms, suites, and private pool villas. Deluxe double rooms offer couples more space with a luxury seating area while Suites have a patio or terrace. The Supreme suite has a heated plunge pool and an outdoor shower, but families and friends may prefer a villa. At The Homestead, you can enjoy first-class dining surrounded by the lodge’s private art collection. For the traditional outdoors feel, Embers is an open terrace barbecue venue.

Villas comfortably sleep four in two ensuite bedrooms and have a balcony deck with splendid views. Glamping tents have double beds with an ensuite bath, so there’s privacy for couples. There are also luxury family glamping tents with two sleeping areas. In-house dining is available for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Botlierskop is a reserve 20 km into the northern hinterland from Mossel Bay with four of the ‘big-five’, excluding the leopard. You can stay at the Village or Tented Lodge, Manor House, or in a private Bush Villa. The best privacy for couples is the Superior King suite within the Tented Lodge. It has a double four-poster bed, an outdoor shower, and a luxurious bathtub overlooking the reserve. Raised wooden platforms connect each tent to the Main Lodge and it’s a short walk to the Manor House. For families, you may find the Village Lodge or Bush Villas more appropriate. Activities include game drives, horseback safaris, and bush trails. The Fynbos Spa is great for unwinding with both a heated indoor and cool outdoor pool.

7. Knysna Elephant Park Lodge

The Knysna Elephant Park is between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay resort town. It was the country’s first reserve dedicated to rehabilitating orphaned elephants. They’ve developed a conservation program that offers unique close-up encounters. You’ll see them wandering around the property or sleeping in their sheltered boma. A lounge area is set aside by the boma so guests can see what they get up to. Luxury rooms can have king, queen, or twin beds – some with the addition of a child sleeper couch. The Family unit sleeps four with two beds, a kitchenette, and a bathroom with a shower. There are daily ‘meet-the-herd’ tours where guests can roam in between Knysna’s smaller, friendlier elephant tribe.

The Garden Route Game Lodge is not far from the Knysna Elephant Park and en route to Plettenberg Bay airport. On a safari, animals you’ll see include elephants, lions, giraffes, white rhinos, and antelope. Buffelsdrift Game Lodge is 10 minutes north of Oudtshoorn, the “ostrich capital of the world”. Built around a large watering hole lake, this region is called the Klein or Little Karoo. 10. Kagga Kamma Nature Reserve

Kagga Kamma Nature Reserve is nestled within a remote Cederberg valley surrounded by exquisite rock formations. It’s one of the more unique and rustic outdoor experiences about 3-hours northeast of Cape Town. They offer morning and evening safaris, but it’s the scenery that will leave you in awe. At the property, the Star and Sky suites are built around craggy outcrops with outdoor sleeping and a natural pool nearby. They have neither electricity, cell reception, nor Wifi, but you can almost touch the Milky Way. Cave suites have modern luxuries while Hut suites are more spacious. In terms of facilities, they have a lovely sandstone bar, restaurant, spa, and two swimming pools. Kagga Kamma is a top pick for honeymoons and anniversaries in the Western Cape.

The Chandelier Game Lodge, just south of Oudtshoorn, is great for its ostrich experience. Learn about ostrich history, economics, their breeding program, and up close feeding opportunities. They have similar experiences with giraffes and buffalo which kids love. Apart from short safari drives, you can go on the Koi San trail and learn about South Africa’s first people. Couples can stay in log cabins or luxury tents.  But make sure you check out the Honeymoon suite as it comes with a private spa bath. For larger groups, the African Family bungalow is the best option since it has extra beds. There’s also an onsite restaurant, a bar, and a chapel for weddings.

Njalo Njalo is about two and a half hours from Cape Town not far from Touws River. It is a modest accommodation with safari drives to the ‘big-five’ Aquila Game Reserve nearby. They have early morning, afternoon, and sunset safaris. Big animals include elephants, lions, ostrich, zebra, eland, and other buck species. You can combine these with horseback riding, quad bikes, or massage treatments back at the lodge.  While their rooms are quite simple, it’s certainly one of the more affordable safari lodges in the Western Cape. Onsite, they also have a restaurant, bar, pool, and playground for kids.

Great planning and service, and everything worked like clockwork. We booked an Inyari Lodge safari with air with Safari.com. it wasn't clear if there will be 2 or three of us, so with Candis' help we booked a family chalet for 2 and added the third later when it was confirmed he can come. Candis put us on flights that maximized our game drive time (unlike some of the other guests) so we got all 6 drives in 3 nights. The lodge was great. Especially the game drives. What to Expect

This is a full, moderately strenuous program that is at times physically demanding and busy and requires you to be in good health and able to keep up with the group without assistance from tour staff. In order to make the most of what each locale has to offer, days will generally be long, with the daily program often beginning early in the morning and continuing into the early evening. We will cover rugged terrain and walks on daily excursions can range from one to two miles, often on uneven terrain in the warm sun, where handrails are not available. During the time in Johannesburg and Cape Town, travel will be by modern, air-conditioned motor coaches on paved roads. Land-based game drives will be by open-air safari vehicles, which can be dusty and bumpy, and that travelers will need to climb in and out of. The time spent at the game park includes early morning and late afternoon game drives, but there will be time midday to relax and enjoy a slower pace. Water-based game drives will be from small watercraft with chair-style seating; you will need to be able to get into and out of small watercraft with the assistance of tour staff and crew. Aboard the Zambezi Queen , there is no elevator, and you should feel comfortable walking on a rocking surface at times.

We will use commercial aircraft for the four on-tour flights: Johannesburg/Kasane, Victoria Falls/Cape Town, Cape Town/Skukuza, and Skukusa/Johannesburg.

Anyone with a serious medical condition or who has difficulty walking should not consider this trip. Please let us know if you have mobility issues that need special accommodation.

This promises to be a memorable journey, but as with all travel, a flexible attitude, a spirit of adventure, and a willingness to explore new areas will enhance your enjoyment of this program. You do not have to participate in all scheduled activities, except when traveling to the next destination. We are sure you will be pleased with the exciting educational program provided, but we want you to be aware of the pace and activity level.

Museums and major attractions are in walking distanse. You may even walk to the trailhead to the top of the Table mountain! The view from the rooms are to the Table mountain. Very beautiful, especially at sunrise. The rooms are not big, but very well decorated. All the hotel has one clear African style. It is not posh, but very artistic. Each room has a balcony. The host is a very interesting person to talk to. Breakfast is absolutely splendid! Special thanks for the natural milled coffee sachets! That's a great solution!
