Choosing the best time to visit Niagara Falls requires more than looking at the weather. Each season has a different atmosphere, a different look, and different advantages. As a local, I’ve experienced them all and have a few preferences for sure. The good news is that most of the year is a totally fine time to visit, but some months are better than others.

The Absolute Best Month to Visit Niagara Falls: September

If you want clear skies, warm days, fully operating attractions, and reasonable crowds, September is the best time to visit Niagara Falls. Come after Labor Day (Labour Day in Canada) to make sure it’s officially transitioned into shoulder season rather than the busy summer season.

Rain is minimal in September, so you can get those postcard-perfect photos of the falls under big blue skies. It’s warm enough that you won’t mind the spray of the waterfalls while enjoying boat tours or other attractions that get you close to the cascades. You can hike if you like or dine al fresco . The evenings are still pleasant for re-visiting after dark to see the waterfalls lit up at night, too!

Since students are back in school after Labor Day, the crowds lessen compared to summer months. Hotel rates drop a little, but they still aren’t dirt cheap.

Most Popular Time to Visit Niagara Falls: June through August

Summer officially kicks off with Memorial Day weekend (USA) and Victoria Day (Canada), both in late May. From June to August, Niagara Falls is in full swing. Like much of the US and Canada, Niagara Falls is busiest in the summer when families have time to roadtrip.

On the bright side, you’ll have lots of daylight for sightseeing and attractions will be open all day, every day. There are festivals and special events in neighboring cities like Buffalo, NY or Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON. And if you have swimming or other water activities on your itinerary, this is when nearby beaches will obviously be the warmest.

Despite its popularity (or perhaps because of it!), I don’t love Niagara Falls in the summer. It’s very crowded, so you’ll need to get to the waterfalls early or late to get photographs without strangers in your shot. Hotel prices are high and lines are long for don’t-miss activities like boat cruises…and especially for crossing the border. And you wouldn’t expect it, but summer days can get steamy hot — the area is riddled with high humidity and 2020 in particular had a lot of 90+ degree days (32+°C).

If you really want to come in summer, the second half of August is your best bet to avoid crowds and muggy days.

Visiting Niagara Falls in Autumn

Of the two shoulder seasons, fall is a better bet on when to come to Niagara Falls. September is mostly reminicient of summer, but October is distinctly autumnal. The air is crisp and cool in the mornings and evenings, but prime sightseeing hours in the daytime are usually comfortable and sunny. Just be aware: November usually falls into the “winter” category unless you get lucky!

Coming in the fall affords you the chance of seeing fall colors. Our hardwood trees blaze up in reds, oranges, and yellows. When that contrasts against the blue Niagara River gorge, it’s stunning. Most attractions operate normally through mid-October with some reducing hours in the second half of the month. Even though they’re open fewer hours, you shouldn’t have trouble fitting it all in: the crowds thin out considerably so you won’t have to wait in line.

This is a particularly great time to come if you’re more interested in the natural attraction of Niagara Falls versus the commercial tours or activities. The later in fall you visit, the lower hotel rates will go, especially if you can time your visit to a weekday.

Visiting Niagara Falls in Winter

Winter in Niagara Falls can start as early as November and linger well into April. In fact, those bookending months are often the worst because you’ll be doused in freezing rain and wind instead of snow. All winter long, you can almost guarantee below-freezing temperatures. Snow comes and goes — sometimes you’re bombarded, but most times it’s quite manageable — and you’ll definitely need to bundle up.

So why visit Niagara Falls in winter? Well, it can be quite beautiful in the snow! It’s magical when you get that perfect snowfall framing your view of the cascades. When you get cold, you can head indoors for a steamy hot cocoa or a glass of ice wine, a dessert wine that local wineries excel at.

Christmas is wonderful here. The Canadian “Festival of Lights” is a twinkling wonderland and both sides of the border have special events on weekends throughout December. In particular, look for events in two atmospheric towns: Lewiston, NY (on the US side) and Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON (Canada). You’ll find carolers, carriage rides, and more.

The rest of winter comes with zero crowds, cheap hotels, and easy parking. Niagara Falls in winter also makes a great day trip from Toronto — you can spend most of your trip enjoying a city life of indoor museums, theater, dining, and shopping.

If you’re lucky, you’ll see Niagara Falls partially frozen over, although not every year gets cold enough for that (January and February are your best bets).

Spring at Niagara Falls

Spring is my least favorite time to visit Niagara Falls. We get a lot of rain, although the later in May you come, the less likely that will be. Temperatures in spring swing wildly, with some days pleasantly warm and other days shockingly cool. As a local, I can choose which days to visit the waterfalls based on last-minute good weather opportunity, but that’s hard for anyone planning a trip in advance.

If you do come in spring, you can enjoy the gardens (primarily on the Canadian side) in full bloom. It starts with daffodils, then tulips at Queen Victoria Park, right next to the waterfalls. However, my favorite is the Centennial Lilac Garden, which peaks mid-to-late May. On the American side, the Open Gardens guide points you to amazing gardens in the Buffalo Niagara region.

Spring is also the best time for fishing, something my husband could tell you more about than I can! With the Niagara River, Lake Erie, and Lake Ontario all here, you just might catch some salmon, trout, bass, or walleye.

You’ll also get some shoulder season benefits in spring, like lighter crowds and more reasonable hotel rates. A few local festivals also start to pick up — Dyngus Day in Buffalo is one of a kind, but you’ll find plenty of events scheduled as area residents look for excuses to get outside!

Visiting Niagara Falls

In order of preference, I’d choose September, then October, then August for when to visit Niagara Falls. December is also lovely, assuming you bundle up and want a winter experience. Of course, it all depends on what you’d like to do.

November, March, and April are probably my least favorite months. There are still a few advantages to visiting then, but I think the cons outweigh the pros.

Thinking of visiting Niagara Falls? It's quite the sight to see! This awe-inspiring destination encompasses three waterfalls – the American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and the Horseshoe Falls – and straddles two countries – the United States and Canada. The thunder and spectacle of approximately 750,000 gallons of water rushing over every second thrills and amazes about 8 million visitors from around the world each year.

Nothing beats the view plus there are plenty of ways to get up close and personal with the falls. Something is bound to engage every single member of your family, from the youngest to the oldest. Determining the best time of year to visit depends on your travel goals.

The Best Weather in Niagara Falls

Since the falls are situated in the northeast, weather conditions vary widely from season to season and can change quickly. June through August brings the warmest weather with average daytime highs in the high 70s and low 80s. It's peak season so you'll spend more money and face more crowds but on the upside, all area attractions are in full swing. The crowds drop off in the spring and fall but so do the temperatures, typically running between 30 and 60 degrees. Winter is for hardy souls since it's common for the thermometer to dip below freezing.

The Best Time for a Close Encounter with Niagara Falls

May through October, boat tours below the falls are the thing to do. The Maid of the Mist departs from the American side (Ticket prices: $19.95 USD per adult, $11.20 USD per child [6–12 years], 5 and under are free) while Hornblower Niagara Cruises set sails from the Canadian side ($28.95 CAD per adult, $18.95 CAD per child [5–12 years], 4 and under are free; includes a funicular ride to boarding area). The approximate 20-minute tours bring passengers within feet of the cascading falls. Plastic rain ponchos are provided because there's a good chance you'll get wet! Reservations aren't necessary although to avoid long lines you'd do well to avoid peak hours between 11am and 4pm. Patrons are advised to not bring strollers on board.

If you visit the Canadian side of the falls (highly recommended as it offers the best panoramic views), it's possible to in effect go backstage and Journey Behind the Falls . First you take an elevator that descends 150 feet through bedrock to tunnels which lead to viewing portals behind the massive sheet of water. Then you can access Upper and Lower Observation decks at the foot of the Horseshoe Falls. The cost is $21.95 CAD per adult, $14.00 CAD per child (6–12 years), and children under 5 are free. This attraction is open year-round although icy conditions in winter prevent the Lower Observation deck from remaining open due to safety reasons. On the upside, this closure means winter rates are reduced.

Meanwhile, on the American side of the falls, Cave of the Winds offers a similar up close and personal experience. You're delivered via elevator into the Niagara Gorge, then a series of wooden walkways bring you within feet of the crashing Bridal Veil Falls. In colder months, the tour is somewhat abbreviated. It's possible however, even in the depths of winter and when weather permits, to at least take the elevator down into the Gorge and experience Niagara in all its frostiness! Peak season admission is $19.00 USD per adult, $16.00 USD per child (Ages 6–12), and children under 5 are free. Prices are considerably lower the remainder of the year.

When to Visit Niagara Falls for Events

Every evening beginning at dusk, Niagara Falls' natural beauty gets enhanced by a special light show. Since 1925, the Niagara Falls Illumination Board (NFIB) has provided nightly illumination with custom colors tied to significant dates on the calendar – green every hour for 15 minutes on St. Patrick's Day, red, white and blue every hour for 15 minutes on the 4th of July, etc. Meanwhile, firework displays light up the skies from late spring through early fall. The annual Winter Festival of Lights brightens up the holiday season. Millions of twinkling lights and animated displays transform Queen Victoria Park (on the Canadian side) and other points in the Niagara Parks system from mid-November through mid-January.

The Best Times to See Wildlife in Niagara Falls

The Niagara River Corridor is internationally recognized as an "Important Bird Area" (IBA). Bald eagles, peregrine falcons, ducks, geese, 19-plus species of gulls and more flock here all year long. The Niagara Falls Observation Tower is even outfitted with "bird-friendly" glass which features a special striped design to prevent birds from colliding into it.

When to Visit Niagara Falls to Avoid the Crowds

Tourism climbs in May, peaks in July and August and begins to decline in September. The cooler months in early spring and late fall are typically slower, although some attractions are either unavailable or restricted. Those willing to brave bone-chilling temps during the winter months may get to witness the unique beauty of the famous "frozen falls."

The Cheapest Time to Visit Niagara Falls

Affordable airfare.

Based on historical data collected by the travel search engine Skyscanner.com for 2017 and 2018, flights to Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF) – which is 24 miles from the falls – from New York and Los Angeles are cheapest in January. If you're coming from Chicago, however, flight prices drop in September and October. Keep in mind that all family members will need to have a passport to cross the border and visit the Canadian side of Niagara Falls.

Affordable Hotels

Historical data collected by Priceline in 2017 and 2018 revealed that July is the most expensive time to visit Niagara Falls no matter which side of the border you stay. The average daily rate for 2–4 star hotels in both Niagara Falls, Ontario and Niagara Falls, NY was $177 USD in July 2018. The summer time frame (June–August) is overall the most expensive with average daily rates ranging from $168–$179 USD. Prices begin to rise in May, but are more affordable ($149 USD in 2018). Comparatively, cooler months (November–January) are typically less expensive with November being the least expensive for the combined areas with an average daily rate of $106 USD. The New York side is typically more affordable than the Ontario side of the Falls. Average daily rate for New York hotels overall is $122 USD compared to $141 USD in Ontario.

When to Visit Niagara Falls

Deciding on the best time to visit the falls and their surrounding areas can make or break your trip. And, as with any other natural attraction, tourist influx during certain months also affects your experience.

A quick online search will tell you that the summer months in the region are ideal for any planned trip. For Niagara Falls, this means June, July, and August. The reasoning behind this is the result of higher day-to-day temperatures.

Although higher temperatures sound great, we are on the fence about this as the mists and breeze from the falls will make you doubt the actual temperatures most of the time.

What the summer months do, however, is cause a massive wave of tourists flogging the falls and the surrounding attractions, towns, and accommodation.

The falls are immensely popular, that’s for sure, but overcrowding everywhere you go can ruin a good vacation.

Winter is from November through to the end of February. Heavy snowfall occurs during December and can continue into January. The falls, in a sense, ‘slow’ down and might even freeze over in the extreme cold. Although this is also a beautiful sight to behold, many attractions at the falls shut down.

We recommend you plan your trip for the shoulder few months. These fall in Spring (March, April, and May) and Autumn (September and October). Temperatures are excellent, usually mid-to-high during the days and comfortable at night.

Prices are reasonable for accommodation, restaurants, entertainment venues, and attractions due to fewer tourists. 

How to Get to Niagara Falls

Traveling to Niagara Falls can be done in a variety of ways. Most visitors opt to fly to one of the airports near the falls. On the Canadian side, this is Toronto Pearson International Airport, which is about an hour’s drive from the falls. 

If you choose to fly on the American side, you’ll head for Buffalo Niagara International Airport, which is in Buffalo and about a 30-to-40-minute drive from the falls.

Niagara Falls also has its own train station with commuter and travel lines coming in from Toronto, New York, and several other cities. To make your trip more exciting we recommend spending at least one day in Toronto .

Once at the falls, it’s worth renting a car from the many car rental agencies around to make getting around as easy as possible and for added freedom.

But, with cab services in the area and short walking distances between most things (on either side of the falls), renting a car isn’t a necessity.

14 Fun Things To Do In Niagara Falls State Park

Niagara Falls State Park is located on the American side of the falls in upstate New York and it often gets confused with the Canadian side. There are so many activities for the entire family including the famous Maid of the Mist, numerous viewpoints and standing near the top of Horseshoe Falls.

In this guide, we’re going to show you how to make the most of your time when visiting Niagara Falls State Park including tips from a local.

Our Niagara Falls Experience

Kristen not only grew up in the nearby Finger Lakes region, but she received her undergraduate degree from  SUNY Buffalo  and  purchased her first home   in this region of western NY . She has visited both the American and Canadian side of Niagara Falls several times in all four seasons throughout the years.

Since Mark moved to the US in 2019, we’ve visited Niagara Falls State Park a few times and it was one of the first trips we ever took together. The photos in this guide are from an April 2022 visit when the weather was very grey and overcast, but that’s just how it goes when you visit western NY in spring. Read more  about us .

Niagara Falls is a famous group of three waterfalls located on the south end of Niagara Gorg e. These waterfalls span between the province of Ontario in Canada and the state of New York. The international border runs straight through Horseshoe Falls which is the largest of the three waterfalls.

You can visit either the American or the Canadian side of the falls. Personally, we think the views of Niagara Falls are better from the Canadian side , but in this guide we’re only going to focus on the American side which makes up Niagara Falls State Park.

Established in 1885, Niagara Falls is the oldest state park in the United States. It helped to create the New York park system we now know today. The park stretches over 400 acres with almost 140 acres under water.

The park itself is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and 365 days a year. We love visiting Niagara Falls because the waterfalls are illuminated every night from dusk until midnight in different colors . Fireworks are also used to celebrate certain events such as the Winter Festival of Lights .

Dogs are allowed in the state park along the green spaces and footpaths including the areas within view of the falls. However, there is no swimming, but you can take the kids to Fallsview Indoor Waterpark nearby in Canada.

Directions To The Park

Niagara Falls State Park is located in the city of Niagara Falls within Niagara County of western New York state about 20 miles northwest of downtown Buffalo.

If you’re coming from somewhere nearby, the easiest way to visit the park is to enter via Interstate 90 or fly into the Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF).

Let’s take a quick look at driving distances and times from nearby major cities as well as the closest airports for you to consider if you’re visiting from further afield.

How To Find Parking

The good news is you don’t have to pay an entrance fee and you don’t need a reservation to enter Niagara Falls State Park. However, you’ll pay $5-15 for parking your vehicle depending on the season.

There are multiple places to park in the city of Niagara Falls, but we like to park at the official state park because it’s closer to the attractions and it’s often the cheaper price . The parking fee is collected within the parking lots of the state park. Here are the current rates per day:

• 3/1 to 5/26 – $10.00
• 5/27 to 10/9 – $10.00 (Mon to Thurs) and $15.00 (Fri to Sun)
• 10/10 to 12/31 – $10.00 (free Saturdays in Dec for Jingle Falls)
• 1/1 to 2/28 – $5.00

But depending on what you want to see, you might want to park in a certain lot. Here is a breakdown of both parking lots:

• Lot 1 – Closest option to Prospect Point, Maid of the Mist and the Observation Tower. It’s near the Rainbow Bridge to Canada.
• Lot 2 – Located on Goat Island, this is near Top of the Falls Restaurant and Cave of the Winds.

Parking lot 3 is located on the eastern side of Goat Island near Three Sisters Island . It’s about a 10 to 15 minute walk from the waterfalls. There is sometimes no fee to park here, but we wouldn’t recommend it for a first time visit. However, it’s a good option if parking lots 1 and 2 are full during the busy summer months.

Travel Tip : You might be able to find a few parking spaces located in the River Way Parking Area and parking is free after 5pm seasonally.

14 Best Things To Do At Niagara Falls State Park

We like Niagara Falls because there are many unique activities in this state park. Additionally, you’ll find both free and paid attractions so you can visit on the cheap (which Kristen often did as a student) or you can make an entire day of it with the entire family.

So without further ado, here are the popular things to see at Niagara Falls State Park on the American side:

1. Horseshoe Falls

• Waterfall Height : 173 ft (53m)
• Waterfall Crest : 2,200 ft (670m)
• Waterway : Niagara River

There are three waterfalls that make up Niagara Falls and the show stopping waterfall everyone has seen in photos is Horseshoe Falls . This is the largest waterfall in the park pushing through about 600,000 gal/sec or 90% of the water flow for Niagara Falls and it stretches from the American to the Canadian side.

Most of Horseshoe Falls is located along the Canadian side, but you can get up close an personal with it from the American side. Head towards Terrapin Point to see the best view of Horseshoe Falls . If this is your first time in the park, this is one spot you should not miss.

2. American Falls

• Waterfall Height : 183 ft (56m)
• Waterfall Crest : 830 ft (253m)

The American Falls is the larger of the two waterfalls located completely on the American side. You can find this waterfall between Prospect Point and Luna Island and you can see it from two vantage points.

American Falls is impressive because it’s 830 ft (253m) if measured straight across the brink. But it extends to 949 feet (29m) when measured along the exact zig-zag brink. This waterfall has a flow rate of 140,000 gal/sec and only makes up about 10% of the total flow of Niagara Falls when combined with Bridal Veil Falls, the next waterfall on this list.

3. Bridal Veil Falls

• Waterfall Height : 181 ft (55m)
• Waterfall Crest : 56 ft (17m)

The smaller of the two falls completely on the American side, Bridal Veil Falls is sometimes known as Luna Falls or Iris Falls. It’s located next to Goat Island near Stedman’s Bluff . As you can see from our photo above, it’s a small thin waterfall, but it packs a big punch.

Later in our guide, we’ll discuss Cave of the Winds . If you plan to visit this attraction, you’ll get to walk directly by Bridal Veil Falls.

4. Niagara Falls USA Visitor Center

• Address : 10 Rainbow Blvd
• Price : Free

Having recent undergone a serious renovation, the Niagara Falls Visitor Center is a state of the art welcome center for everyone. It’s open 7 days a week from 8:30am to 3:00pm , but it’s closed on major holidays.

If you’re new to the area, you should stop in because they have area maps and brochures as well as public restrooms and photo opportunities . Sadly, the new visitors center was still under construction during our last trip, but we’re looking forward to checking it out next time we’re in town.

Travel Tip : Complimentary 30-minute parking for the visitors center is available at the corner of First Street and Rainbow Boulevard.

5. Cave Of The Winds

• Address : 10 Goat Island Road
• Price : $8.00-$14.00

Cave of the Winds is one of the best activities at Niagara Falls State Park . Kristen has so many memories of this as a child. So if you’re visiting with kids, this is something they’ll never forget!

After an elevator ride down 175 ft (53m) into the Niagara Gorge, you’ll step out onto the wooden walkways that leads almost to the base of Bridal Veil Falls. In our photo above, you can see the of series red walkways which are known as the Hurricane Deck .

As you explore the catwalk, you’ll come within 20 feet (6m) of the thundering waters of Bridal Veil Falls which will drench you with spray. We love Cave of the Winds because you can often seen a rainbow and it’s a cool experience to stand next to one of the world’s largest waterfalls .

Historically, the wooden walkways were removed every year in fall and then rebuilt in spring, but now the Cave of the Winds is open year round. You can purchase timed-entry tickets on Goat Island at Cave of the Winds Plaza a nd tickets are not sold online. Here are the current rates:

• Adults – $14.00
• Youth – $10.00
• Group – $8.00

Travel Tip : The name Cave of the Winds originated in the 1800’s from a large overhanging rock which allowed visitors to stand under the falls. In the early 1900’s, the cave collapsed, but the name stuck.

6. Niagara Falls Observation Tower

• Address : 332 Prospect St

The Niagara Falls Observation Tower is a popular spot at the Niagara Gorge. At the top, you can see panoramic views of all three Niagara Falls as well as both the US and Canadian side. We like the tower because it’s a free activity you can enjoy in the park.

Elevators provide visitors with access to the base of the gorge and this is where you can board for the Maid of the Mist boat tour. From the lower gorge, you can also head to a series of stairs to climb the Crow’s Nest for additional views of the American falls.

Travel Tip : Birdwatching is a popular activity in this location of the park and you can sometimes spot peregrine falcons, bald eagles or various gull species.

7. Maid Of The Mist

• Address : 1 Prospect St
• Price : Varies

The Maid of the Mist is another must-do activity when visiting Niagara Falls State Park . Since 1846, this world famous boat brings visitors to the base of the American falls and then to the basin of Horseshoe Falls for stunning views you won’t see from the top of the gorge.

Boats depart from the lower gorge at the base of the observation tower and tickets include the classic blue ponchos to help you stay dry near the waterfalls . The Maid of the Mist season is dependent on river ice conditions, but it typically runs from April to November. So keep in mind if you visit in winter, the Maid of the Mist will not be not running. Here are the current rates:

• Adult – $28.25
• Child (6 to 12 years) – $17.75
• Child (5 and under) – Free with paid adult

You can purchase tickets directly online through the official website or at the ticket office onsite. It’s important to know tickets are not sold as timed-entry options and passengers are boarded on a first-come, first-serve basis . You can also purchase tickets as part of a tour:

Travel Tip : The Maid of the Mist operates on the American side, but Niagara City Cruises operates on the Canadian side so when booking tickets, make sure you have the correct cruise line on the side you plan to visit.

8. Niagara Scenic Trolley

• Price : $2.00-3.00

For those looking to learn about Niagara Falls, a ride on this state of the art scenic trolly is the perfect activity. The Niagara Scenic Trolley is eco-friendly and it runs on natural gas. The ride includes a three mile 30 minute guided tour to showcase the highlights of the state park.

It’s also heated in the cooler months and air conditioned in the summer to ensure comfort for all riders. The trolley is ADA-compliant and great for those those with limited mobility. Here are the current rates:

• Adult – $3.00
• Child – $2.00

If you don’t want to walk to all of the activities we list in this guide, you can purchase an all day trolley pass to ride for the entire day. However, the trolley closes for the winter season so always check the schedule before visiting if you plan to ride.

Travel Tip : The Discover Niagara Shuttle is another hop-on, hop-off shuttle showcasing 25 attractions throughout the county of Niagara. It’s free to ride and runs from May to October.

9. Hiking Trails

Not as well known as some of the other activities on this list, the Niagara Gorge trail system is comprised of a series of hiking trails running parallel to the Niagara Gorge . All trails vary in difficulty and often close various times the year for safety reasons. The best time to hike at Niagara Falls State Park is mid-May to November, but rock falls are common in winter or early spring.

Here are popular Niagara Falls hikes (distances are one way):

• Niagara Scenic Parkway Trail – 4.3 miles, easy
• Niagara Gorge Rim Trail – 5.4 miles, easy
• Schoellkopf Power Station Trail – 0.8 miles, moderate
• Great Gorge Railway Trail – 1.2 mile, easy
• Whirlpool Rapids Trail – 1.7 miles, difficult
• Devil’s Hole Trail – 1.5 miles, moderate
• Artpark Gorge Trail – 1.3 miles, easy to moderate
• River’s Edge Trail – 0.7 miles, easy
• Shoreline Trail – Varies in length

We like hiking at Niagara Falls State Park because you can also visit Devils Hole State Park and Whirlpool State Park with a little bit of planning. Use this trail map here to plan your hike.

10. Luna Island

One of our favorites places in Niagara Falls State Park is Luna Island because this small piece of land is tucked away next to the north side of Goat Island in between both American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls.

Luna Island acquired its name in the 1800’s when lunar rainbows were seen above the island on bright moonlit nights. Unfortunately, we don’t see moon rainbows today because the falls are lit up at night.

The only way to access Luna Island is through Goat Island by foot and you’ll be able to stand a few feet away from the the top of thundering American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls. From this vantage point, you’ll also be to look down onto the Cave of the Winds and see the Canadian side of the Niagara Gorge.

11. Aquarium Of Niagara

• Address : 701 Whirlpool St
• Price : $19.95-$14.95

The Aquarium of Niagara is located past the observation tower and the hiking trails on the north side of the park. In this aquarium, you’ll find more than 1,500 aquatic animals ranging from the Great Lakes to coral reefs . With over 30 educational exhibits, kids can learn about California sea lions, rescued seals, Peruvian Humboldt penguins, seahorses, coral reefs, sturgeon and more.

Tickets for the aquarium can be purchased at the door, but to avoid long wait times, you should purchase tickets online via the official website prior to visiting in summer.

12. Goat Island Pedestrian Bridge

There are a few ways you can get to Goat Island, but one of the best ways is to park your vehicle in parking lot 1 and walk across the Goat Island pedestrian bridge over the raging American rapids . After you cross over the bridge, you’ll have access to Luna Island, Top of the Falls Restaurant, Cave of the Winds, Three Sisters Island and amazing views of each waterfall in the park.

According to AllTrails , the entire loop around Goat Island is about 2.0 miles . Check recent comments to see what others are saying about trail conditions. If you don’t want to walk across the pedestrian bridge, the Niagara Scenic trolley stops on Goat Island or you can also drive to this portion of the park via the American Falls Bridge.

13. Top Of The Falls Restaurant

Goat Island offers a unique dining experience at Top of the Falls Restaurant because this is the only place you can enjoy a meal with panoramic floor to ceiling windows overlooking Horseshoe Falls . Even if you don’t stop for a meal here, be sure to check out the area because this is where you’ll find Terrapin Point.

Top of the Falls offers modern American classics such as beef on weck, park inspired burgers as well as fish and chips. Gluten free, vegetarian, vegan, and dairy free menu items are also available. It’s open seasonally from May to September .

14. Three Sisters Islands

Three Sisters Islands are a series of small pedestrian only islands where you can see views of the upper rapids before they make the descent to Horseshoe Falls . The trio of islands are named after the three daughters of General Parkhurst Whitney, an American commander during the War of 1812.

Legend has it Whitney took his three daughters, Asenath, Angeline and Celinda Eliza to the islands in the spring of 1816 and they became the first known visitors to access the third island. During this time, there was no bridge and they could only cross the rapids due to an ice jam.

Best Time To Visit

There is no wrong time to visit Niagara Falls because every season offers something different. Having visited in every season, here are the pros and cons to each time of the year:

• March to May – The spring season is when the waterfalls will be at their strongest as the snowpack melts in upstate NY. There will be minimal crowds, but weather is unpredictable as you can see in our photos with most days overcast and gray.
• June to August – Summer is the peak season at Niagara Falls because it’s warm and all the attractions are open. However, the park is packed and hotels prices are inflated.
• September to October – Fall offers cooler weather perfect for hiking and the beautiful fall foliage is visible in the Niagara Gorge. However, this time of year the waterfalls are at their weakest and some attractions may be limited.
• December to February – Winter is a unique time of the year because the falls often frozen over which is amazing to see. There are also minimal crowds with cheaper parking and hotel prices. However, it’s very cold and many of the attractions are not open.

If you want to take advantage of beautiful weather and all of the attractions in Niagara Falls State Park, visit in summer when everything is open. But prepare for expensive accommodation and larger crowds.

Or if you want to see Niagara Falls at its strongest, visit in the spring season when the snowmelt helps to fill the river, but plan for unpredictable weather.

Where To Eat

There are two food options located directly within Niagara Falls State Park including Top of the Falls Restaurant and the Cave of Winds snack bar which serves light bites. But these food options are only open seasonally so if you’re visiting in the off season, you’ll have to find something else.

The next best option is to try one of the restaurants nearby in the city of Niagara Falls. Or you can head to one of the restaurants in the popular Seneca Niagara Resort and Casino. You’ll find a few chain options around, but we always recommend you eat at a local spot to support the community.

• Gadawski’s  – Family-owned bar serving Polish + American dishes
• Marketside Restaurant  – Cozy, modest diner with simple menu
• Michael’s Restaurant  – Homestyle pastas, meats + American fare
• Pho Golden  – Authentic Vietnamese cuisine

Travel Tip : If this is your first time in Buffalo and you don’t mind driving, we recommend you check out the Dinosaur Bar-B-Que (now one of Mark’s favorite restaurant since moving to the US) or Anchor Bar which is home to the original buffalo style chicken wing.

Niagara Falls Hotels

Your best option for accommodation when visiting Niagara Falls State Park is the city of Niagara Falls which is adjacent to the park. Here are the best hotels options:

• Comfort Inn & Suites  (Niagara Falls) – 5 miles
• Gorge View  – 1.0 mile
• Hampton Inn  (Niagara Falls) – 1.5 miles
• Holiday Inn Express  (Grand Island) – 7 miles
• Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino  – 1.5 miles
• The Cadence  – 1.0 mile

The Morgan Conclusion

The American side of Niagara Falls features a beautiful state park filled with nuermous activities and one of the largest waterfalls in the world. It’s a very popular tourist destination in the summer months.

But is Niagara Falls worth visiting?

Yes, we think Niagara Falls State Park is worth visiting because it’s a majestic world wonder . The park is also free to visit minus the small parking fee and it’s open 24 hours a day. While we think the Canadian side of Niagara Falls has the best views, the American side has the best activities. We highly recommend you ride the Maid of the Mist or walk through the Cave of the Winds if this is your first time in town.

You could easily visit Niagara Falls State Park in one day, but if you want to see everything we list in this guide, we recommend at least two days. If you had the time, you could even head to the Canadian side to see both vantage points on the same trip. But the Canadian side is very tacky and touristy so you’ll only need a few hours to take in the views.

Why Go To Niagara Falls

It's not hard to understand why many consider Niagara Falls a top natural wonder of the world. Or why it has been the location of some incredible (and now illegal) daredevil antics over the years. The second you see the mammoth Niagara River rumbling toward a 188-foot waterfall at about 20 to 30 (and up to 68) mph, your mouth will drop. The speed at which the river falls creates a misty fog full of rainbows and an unmistakable roar heard from miles away. From the top, crowds flock to the railings to feel the mist on their faces. As you follow the water's path downward, boats, platforms and observation decks support colorful poncho-clad visitors.

Over the years, Niagara has gone from classic honeymoon spot to cheesy honeymoon spot and, now, it's an odd mix of the two. Best months to visit.

The best time to visit Niagara Falls is June to August. Summer is peak season, and with good reason: Average highs rest in the low 80s. Mists and breezes from the waterfalls can make the area feel cooler. You'll spend more money and face more crowds, but visiting in summer will allow you to take full advantage of the weather and attractions. Plus, the free Discover Niagara Shuttle is in full operation during the summer season, making it easy to get from one attraction to another. Spring and fall welcome fewer tourists thanks to the plummeting temps, but there are a few advantages to each season. Fall constitutes harvest season at local wineries, while spring's warming temperatures usher in colorful blooms at the botanical gardens . Winter sees below-freezing temperatures, causing many attractions, such as the Maid of the Mist boat tours, to shut down. However, the frigid climate does drive down hotel rates.

What You Need to Know

Pick a side You can view the falls from either the Ontario or the New York side. Most visitors prefer the Canadian side, which also has a nicer selection of restaurants and hotels .

Exchange currency Canada's official currency is the Canadian dollar, but U.S. dollars, as well as major credit cards, will be accepted on either side. On the other hand, exchanging money before crossing into Canada and taking advantage of the exchange rate isn't a bad idea, depending on the fluctuating currencies.

How to Save Money in Niagara Falls

Falling for it In the fall, the room rates have decreased with the descending temperatures, but the attractions are still open.

Falling for it again Around the falls, eager vendors sell kitschy souvenirs and bottled drinks at high prices. Don't be a sucker for them.

Be wary of Lady Luck Trying your hand at blackjack or the slots at nearby casinos can be very dangerous for your wallet.

What to Eat

As is the case with large tourist attractions, you’ll find plenty of chain restaurants and street food vendors clustered around the falls. But if you’re on the hunt for a unique meal that shows off the region’s flavors (and wine), you won’t be disappointed.

Along with fish and chips, you'll notice many of the Canadian restaurants borrow traditions from the U.K., with servings of English classics and high tea. While wine regions on both sides of the border feature smaller, family-run wineries and larger winemakers that ship worldwide, most visitors prefer the Canadian wines. They’re showcased in pairings at winery restaurants and on many local farm-to-table menus throughout Niagara Falls.

On the American side, a handful of family-owned restaurants in the Little Italy section of Niagara Falls have welcomed hungry visitors for generations, offering generous portions of homemade pasta and regional-style pizza. With the city’s proximity to Buffalo , chicken wings served with fiery Buffalo sauce and a side of blue cheese are the real deal here. For a foodie’s selection of upscale dining, breweries and local cafes, head to historic downtown Lewiston’s quaint main street.

Although it welcomes a large number of tourists every year, Niagara Falls is still a relatively small and safe town. However, that doesn't mean you shouldn't use common sense. Keep a close eye on your personal items, especially in more crowded areas. You'll also want to exercise some caution around the falls themselves. They produce a large amount of mist, which can impose a slippery film on the walkways surrounding the falls. Wear shoes with traction, and hold on to the rails to avoid slipping.

Getting Around Niagara Falls

The best way to get around Niagara Falls is on foot. Walking around the area is relatively easy (when there is no snow). Even getting across the United States to Canada border is only a 20-minute walk across the Rainbow Bridge. What's more, attractions are generally close together and within walking distance of one another. If your feet are feeling a bit weary, you can hop on the American side’s efficient (and free) Discover Niagara Shuttle. Having a car can make your trip more stressful, since roads are prone to congestion and parking is very expensive.

If you're not driving in from a nearby city, you'll likely fly into Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF), which sits about 30 miles southeast of the falls. Niagara Falls International Airport (IAG) is located much closer to the falls (less than 10 miles), but it only operates flights from Allegiant departing or arriving from a handful of Florida cities. There are shuttles from both airports to both sides of the falls, plus rental cars, taxis and ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft can be utilized to and from the airports.

Entry & Exit Requirements

At Niagara Falls, you can cross from the U.S. into Canada (and vice versa) over the Rainbow Bridge, though all persons must have a passport, a New York State enhanced license or a NEXUS pass. No matter how you cross (on foot, by bike or by car), you'll also be expected to pay a small toll. For children, a birth certificate will suffice. Niagara Falls: 4 Mistakes to Avoid & What to do Instead

When we took our first trip to Niagara Falls more than a decade ago, I was convinced it would be our last. It wasn’t that impressive, the area seemed kind of tacky and in three hours we felt like we’d seen more than we really needed to.

It turns out we were doing it wrong. We made plenty of Niagara Falls “rookie mistakes”, but fortunately I learned from them and our visit at the end of our epic New York/Canada road trip . Our second trip to Niagara Falls was far more successful, so I’m here to share what I’ve learned along the way: the best things to do in Niagara Falls and what not to do in Niagara Falls. You’ll also find out where to stay in Niagara Falls, how to get around Niagara Falls Canada and more in this Niagara Falls trip planning guide.

Where to stay in Niagara Falls (Canadian side)

I’ll discuss the reasons why more below, but I strongly recommend that you get a hotel on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. There are a few features I’d look out for that are specific to staying overnight in Niagara Falls, and in my opinion a clear winner .

• Falls view: The point of staying overnight in Niagara Falls is to have an amazing view at all hours, so don’t skimp on this! If you’re using a hotel comparison engine to narrow things down by price, they generally show you the cheapest available room rather than the room with the view you want – prepare to do some digging.
• Accessibility to Niagara Falls viewing area: The vast majority of Niagara Falls hotels with a view are located along Fallsview Blvd. However , that’s up a fairly steep hill from the platforms along Niagara Parkway and there’s basically just one pedestrian route connecting them – Murray Street.
• Breakfast: In 2022 none of the hotels were offering free breakfast, and it showed. I kid you not that the line at the closest Tim Horton’s was out the door and all the way along the outside wall of the shop at 9am! For 2023, it looks like complimentary breakfast is back on at many hotels. If you’re planning ahead for a visit during the busy summer season, try to book a hotel that will serve a quick breakfast and get you out the door and on your way to the top Niagara Falls attractions.

Speaking of planning ahead, the good rooms at best hotels in Niagara Falls do book up early! Don’t miss out on a room with a view of Niagara Falls, especially if you’re visiting in the summer.

So which hotel do I think you should stay at in Niagara Falls? To me the winner is Embassy Suites Niagara Falls/Fallsview – which is not where we stayed . The Embassy Suites has a front-and-center view of both the American and Canadian sides for the nighttime light show, and it’s one of the best hotels where you can see the Niagara Falls fireworks! It’s one of the tallest hotels in Niagara Falls, so there are lots of opportunities for an excellent view. The hotel includes free breakfast and an evening manager’s reception, plus there’s a Starbucks in the lobby.

The other piece that makes the Embassy Suites a stand-out is the Niagara Falls Incline Railway in its backyard. Instead of hoofing it all the way to the Casino and traversing the steep hill of Murray Street, you can pay a few dollars to be deposited right where you want to go: the main viewing platform for Niagara Falls and the Niagara Falls Welcome Center. The Incline Railway is a miniature funicular and you can buy unlimited rides for just over $6 CAD per day. While the Niagara Falls Incline Railway is available to anyone willing to pay, the convenience for Embassy Suites guests is just unparalleled.

If the Embassy Suites is so great, why didn’t we stay there? First, because I didn’t fully realize how isolated most of Fallsview Blvd is from Niagara Parkway (and when we arrived late at night the hotel clerk didn’t mention that we could shorten our walk by catching the Incline Railway). But second, I booked relatively last-minute for a holiday weekend and the cost would have been much more than I was willing to swallow.

As a compromise, we stayed up the street at the Radisson Hotel & Suites Fallsview . Check out our view above! In addition to the cheaper room, parking cost a reasonable $25 CAD compared with $70 CAD at Embassy Suites (yes, you read that right).

The Radisson isn’t nearly as tall as many of its neighbors and it’s located behind them (specifically this one ), but they do offer several rooms (including ours) with excellent views. Check out our view here! It flies a little “under the radar” compared to some of its neighbors so you may be more likely to score a deal compared with other Fallsview hotels. The staff was very helpful and the kids couldn’t get enough of the enormous polar bear in the lobby.

A final option to consider is the Sheraton Fallsview Hotel . It underwent a massive renovation within the last few years. It offers great views of Niagara Falls if you select the right room – be careful when booking because some rooms don’t even have a window (which I’ve never actually experienced at a hotel). If you want to see Horseshoe Falls, you have to select either “Fallsview” (preferably high floor) or “Canadian Fallsview Corner”.

One reason lots of families like the Sheraton Fallsview Hotel is that it’s directly connected to the fantastic Fallsview Indoor Waterpark. When you book directly through Marriott you can select a package that includes tickets. The waterpark has fun for all ages and is open (and heated) year-round.

Niagara Falls Mistakes to Avoid

Want to have an amazing trip to Niagara Falls? Be sure not to make these mistakes – including a few that we’ve made in the past .

DON’T: Stay only on the American side

On our first visit to Niagara Falls, many years ago, we were driving from Buffalo and made a quick stop en route to Niagara-on-the-Lake. Stopping on the American side of Niagara Falls made sense for our plans so that’s what we did.

Unfortunately, the view from the American side of Niagara Falls is… incomplete. You can’t see all of Horseshoe Falls, and you’re standing right next to American Falls so that you can’t see all of that either when you’re in Niagara Falls State Park. When you’re debating Niagara Falls Canada vs New York, the winner is clear.

The only reason to skip the Canadian side of Niagara Falls in favor of the American side is if you don’t have a passport or you’re in a huge rush coming from the New York. If you have enough time, feel free to stop at both!

I won’t go into depth on the tourist attractions in Niagara Falls NY, but you’ll want to check out both Maid of the Mist and Niagara Falls observation tower (which extends over Niagara River Gorge) so that you can see American Falls, Horseshoe Falls and Bridal Veil Falls. Under the encouragement of Frederick Law Olmsted, the area surrounding the falls was wisely preserved as America’s first state park so there are plenty of beautiful free viewpoints.

DON’T: Get sucked into a scam

Confession time: on that ill-fated first trip to Niagara Falls, we didn’t do any research. We were just taking a quick side trip from Buffalo and we assumed everything would be straightforward. Go take in a view point, take a ride on Maid of the Mist and then move on to Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Everything seemed fine as we pulled into the parking lot at One Niagara Welcome Center (pictured above so that you can avoid it) – it offers some of the cheapest parking in Niagara Falls New York. But once in the lot, we were funneled into the massive, official-looking building in order to access the Falls.

Since they advertise attraction tickets we asked to buy tickets for Maid of the Mist. They were happy to sell us tickets, but told us that the only way to go on Maid of the Mist was as part of a tour to see several Niagara Falls sites. That was an out and out lie, but we only found out after we had paid and been herded onto a shuttle bus that took us miles away (with other unsuspecting tourists) to see some other part of the Niagara River. At the end of the tour, more than an hour later, we were dropped off at the actual entrance to Maid of the Mist and handed bulk-purchased tickets.

Needless to say the experience left a bad taste in our mouths, as we felt we’d been cheated of our time, our money and our preference to be independent travelers. Niagara Falls is one of the most popular tourist attractions in New York State and has the infrastructure to match – just don’t get suckered.

DON’T: Spend all of your time mobbed by tourists

The most popular place in Niagara Falls, Canada is the walkway between the Table Rock Visitors Center and the boarding area for Niagara City Cruises, then continuing up to the Clifton Hill entertainment area. It’s packed!

Don’t be afraid to get away from the crows to have a different Niagara Falls experience. We found it much more peaceful on either end of Niagara Parkway (closer to Rainbow Bridge and near the Niagara Parks Power Station ). After being packed like sardines on a 700 person boat, finding ourselves virtually alone in Bird Kingdom was a welcome change – more on that below!

Another great way to avoid huge crowds is to visit Niagara Falls in winter !

DON’T: Leave after just a few hours

While you could get a quick taste of Niagara Falls just by looking out from the platform and taking a boat tour, you’d be missing out! Seeing Niagara Falls illuminated at night, getting below the Falls, watching fireworks over the American Falls, checking out an aerial view of Horseshoe Falls… there’s just so much to do that it’s worth spending at least 1 day in Niagara Falls.

We arrived in Niagara Falls mid-afternoon and departed just before lunch the following day. That allowed us enough time to see the Falls both day and night, and also minimized our crowded, tourist-priced meals.

Even if you’re only exploring the Niagara Falls American side, it’s still worth catching the unique side view of the illuminated American Falls before checking into your Niagara Falls New York hotel for the night.

Niagara Falls Things to Do

We’ve gone over what not to do, but what are the best things to do in Niagara Falls? Here are a few absolute “musts” along with Niagara Falls tips to ensure everything goes smoothly for you. Don’t forget to slow down and enjoy how pretty the area is!

DO: Get a room with a view

I’m not normally a hotel splurger, and I hesitate to even call our one night at the Fallsview Radisson a “splurge” at just over $300 USD. But there’s truly something special about seeing Niagara Falls from above during both the day and night. I even went to sleep with the window shade up a bit so that I could watch the light show on Horseshoe Falls from bed.

Since I went over the Fallsview hotels I recommend above I won’t rehash them now, but be sure to review those options carefully. Here are a few quick picks:

DO: Take a boat tour

One of the most classic things to do in Niagara Falls is a boat tour, either Maid of the Mist on the New York side or Niagara City Cruises (formerly Hornblower) on the Canadian side. The two Niagara Falls boat tours are basically the same except for the departure point and the Canadian boats are a little nicer in my opinion. They both cross in front of the American Falls and then proceed into the thundering water of Horseshoe Falls for a drenching. Thankfully both boats give visitors a poncho to stay dry – red on the Canadian side and blue on the American side.

How long is the Niagara Falls boat tour? Surprisingly, it’s only about 20 minutes. But allow plenty of time for the complete “experience” if you’re visiting Niagara Falls in the summer – from the time we got in line to board to the time we disembarked it was a solid hour, plus a few more minutes waiting for an elevator back to the top.

What should you wear for Maid of the Mist or Hornblower? On a small adult carrying a backpack, the poncho goes to about knee length. I chose to wear shorts and waterproof shoes to avoid walking around soggy for the rest of the day. The ponchos extend much further on kids obviously, so only their shoes were exposed. One kid wore Keens while the other wore these boots and both stayed dry and comfortable.

Where is the best place to stand on a Niagara City Cruise? We took our Niagara Falls cruise in the afternoon, and it worked out great to park ourselves near the front of the boat a little toward the American side. We had a fantastic view of all three waterfalls for almost the entire boat ride and didn’t have the sun in our eyes except for a brief time at the end (when we were already soaked from Horseshoe Falls and didn’t care).

Can you take a baby on Maid of the Mist or Niagara City Cruises (Hornblower)? There’s no age restriction on children riding the Hornblower/Niagara City Cruises/Maid of the Mist. However , you need to think carefully about how you’re going to bring your baby on board. The provided ponchos do a very good job of keeping your upper half dry, but wouldn’t be safe for babywearing since they’re totally unbreathable.

The family next to us actually brought their entire stroller/car seat travel system on board but quickly seemed to realize it wasn’t a great choice: absolutely everything was soaked as soon as we got near Horseshoe Falls and there’s a risk that their car seat will develop rust and/or mold if not properly drained and air dried very quickly. At some point they took their overwhelmed and unhappy baby out of her car seat to hold her and they did their best to hold the slippery poncho around her. I’m not sure there’s really a great way to take a baby on a Niagara Falls boat tour but hopefully this at least gives you some food for thought.

DO: See Niagara Falls from different perspectives

The water flow rate over Niagara Falls clocks in at a cool 750,000 gallons per second . It is truly jaw-dropping and a place you have to see.

But one of the most fascinating things about Niagara Falls is that it looks completely different depending on where you’re standing. Give yourself time to check it out from different angles! Obviously be sure to stop at the main viewing areas along Niagara Parkway – there’s a reason this area is the most popular place to view Niagara Falls.

I’d recommend heading to the far ends of town for a more unique perspective in addition. For instance, if you head over toward the Falls from the Niagara Parks Power Station (more on that later) you can actually get right near the water before it tumbles over the cliff… and then you can get down to the bottom of the Falls too.

Closer to (of even on ) Rainbow Bridge on the opposite side of town you’ll get a wider perspective on the Falls. You can also get that broader – and higher – perspective from the top of Skylon Tower standing 775 feet above the Falls. Be sure to check this Groupon for discounted tickets!

DO: Consider your transportation options

The simplest way to visit Niagara Falls is by car. That’s straight-forward if you’re on a road trip, but if you’re flying in you’ll want to arrive in Toronto (2-2.5 hours depending on traffic) or Buffalo (45 minutes plus time to cross the border).

While Buffalo Niagara International Airport is closer, flights may be more limited an expensive – for example, our home in Columbus is much closer to Buffalo and in the same country, but Buffalo flights are more expensive and inexplicably require a stop. Greater Rochester International Airport faces the same challenges and is even further from Niagara Falls, though it’s a good gateway to visiting the Finger Lakes NY .

Keep in mind travel document requirements, which vary based on exactly how you get to Niagara Falls, Ontario.

• Flying into Toronto: Everyone needs a valid passport book
• Flying into Buffalo and crossing overland: Adults need a passport book, passport card, enhanced drivers license ( not the same as Real ID ) or NEXUS card; children under 16 only need a birth certificate

Why does this difference in documentation matter? If you’re planning to visit Niagara Falls with kids and your family doesn’t travel overseas with any regularity, it may be cheaper to fly into Buffalo since only the adults need a passport and they may have access to less expensive alternatives.

Once you get to an airport in the region, you can consider either renting a car or taking one of the many shuttle options from Toronto or from Buffalo . Which option is right for you depends a bit on what you intend to do – if you just want to spend a day or two at the falls, don’t plan on driving or you’re staying at a hotel with crazy expensive parking then the shuttle option maybe be a great fit.

Within the town of Niagara Falls, you can walk to some locations, take the hop-on/hop-off WEGO tourist bus (particularly the blue line) or drive and park as need be. If you have a rental car, you may want to park it at your hotel as soon as you arrive in Niagara Falls and then walk or take WEGO everywhere. Daily parking at most lots that are anywhere near the falls is $25-30. I paid it one day because it made logistical sense for our plans, but it definitely hurt!

If you’re thinking about the bus, WEGO Niagara Falls bus fare in 2022 is $10 per 24 hours for adults and $7 per child. You can also combine it with a daily package for the Niagara Falls Incline Railway at $6 per day. These options are all reasonably priced, but if you’re traveling as a family then parking in one of the convenient lots may just be the most sensible choice. In the photo at the top of this section, you can see where the Incline Railway, WEGO and parking all meld together near the Table Rock Welcome Centre.

DO: Visit some less popular attractions

It seems like there are a thousand different Niagara Falls attractions – some good, some bad and apparently some ugly . This time around we managed to have a few fantastic experiences that most tourists overlook.

Niagara Parks Power Station

The  Niagara Park Power Station  just opened as an attraction in summer 2022, so it’s still a little bit of a hidden gem. It was the first major power station on the Canadian side of the Niagara River and (other than added explanatory posters) still looks much like it did when it was operational. I highly recommend the guided tour, which explains how the falls were used to generate electricity, the fascinating history of the power plant and how it impacted the entire Niagara region.

After the tour, you’ll take a glass elevator down 180 feet and then walk the half-mile tunnel that used to carry water back into the Niagara River at the base of the falls. The viewing platform adjacent to Horseshoe Falls provides a fantastic perspective. It’s not as immersive as Maid of the Mist and Niagara City Cruises, but without the sheer power of Niagara Falls blinding you with its spray.

We spent about 2.5 hours at the Power Station including the guided tour and tunnel. The tunnel is cooler than it is outside, so you’ll want to throw a sweatshirt in your bag to be prepared or wear a long sleeved shirt. There are ponchos available (you can see them in yellow in the photo above) in case the wind picks up and brings spray toward the platform, but it’s less common than on the boat tours.

Bird Kingdom

We often prefer to visit locally-themed attractions when we travel, but an Ontario family we met over the summer convinced me that Bird Kingdom was well worth a visit. They were absolutely right! Be sure to add this to your plans for a family vacation to Niagara Falls, Canada.

Before I tell you how great the experience is, it’s good to know that Bird Kingdom is accredited by the Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariums – their residents come from other zoos, from the Species Survival Program, from surrenders by private owners and other ethical means. It’s run professionally and prioritizes animal welfare.

Now that the critical stuff is covered, our experience at Bird Kingdom was just as lovely as our Canadian friends promised! Even though we visited on Sunday afternoon of a holiday weekend, we were just about the only people there. We spent tons of time privately enjoying the company of parrots, macaws and other exotic birds while peppering their human caregiver with questions about their behaviors, personalities and care. The kids and I were all enthralled!

The biggest claim to fame is that Bird Kingdom is the world’s largest indoor free-fly aviary. You can easily spend an hour watching a huge variety of birds flying around just being birds! There’s also a fun opportunity to feed the adorable lorikeets.

Thankfully Bird Kingdom has its own two-level parking garage that costs a very reasonable $3 per hour! You pay at the machine with a credit card and just pop the receipt in your windshield. Because Bird Kingdom is past the Rainbow Bridge, it’s much quieter than everything closer to the Falls. We parked our car there and made the quick walk over to Niagara City Cruises, then came back after the boat ride to spend an hour with the birds – Bird Kingdom is open until 6:30 in the summer (last admission 5:45).

We found the cheapest ticket prices through their (permanent?) Groupon using one of the frequently-available coupons to save on local activities.

DO: Drive for food if you need to

As I scoured Yelp for the best Niagara Falls restaurants, I was struck by the high prices and mediocre reviews paired with exhausting wait times reported for nearly every spot close to the Falls or the popular (and ultra-crowded) Clifton Hill entertainment area. Since I have no tolerance for that combination of traits, I asked some locals where to head for a better experience.

The universal suggestion was to head to the Lundy’s Lane district, about 3km from Clifton Hill. It’s a quick drive but offers better restaurants and little to no wait time even when we visited on a crowded holiday weekend. We had a nice, quiet Thai meal at Micah’s Bistro . Another recommended option is Italian restaurant Carpaccio just across the street.

The great news is that if you’ve chosen to rely on WEGO to get around Niagara Falls, you can take the red line to Dorchester Road to access some of these good restaurants in Niagara Falls.

For a truly special dining experience, head to nearby Niagara-on-the-Lake for dinner at HOB NOB . It’s housed in a restored 1832 Victorian manor that’s also the location of The Charles Hotel . We dined there for our anniversary what seems like a lifetime ago and it remains a memorable experience! While I know I suggested above staying in Niagara Falls and I still stand by that, I’ll forgive you for choosing the romantic charm of Niagara-on-the-Lake instead.

DO: Explore the rest of the area

The Niagara region of Ontario and western New York offer so many wonderful sites to explore! It would be a shame to overlook them. Even within just a few minutes of Niagara Falls there are a few places that should be on your radar for a Niagara Falls itinerary:

Niagara-on-the-Lake

On our first visit to the area we stayed overnight in this charming village just 15 minutes north of Niagara Falls, Ontario. It offers beautiful scenery along Lake Ontario, great dining and wonderful wineries to sample. The local specialty is ice wine, which benefits from the cold winters.

To avoid driving yourself from winery to winery, check out these two unique tour offerings:

• Vine and Dine winery bike tour – During our visit we saw just how bike-friendly the region is, so this will be our pick next time! You’ll visit four wineries and enjoy a picnic lunch all while getting in your exercise for the day.

Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center

While most of this article showcases things to do in Niagara Falls, Ontario, there’s one spot that’s on my personal “to visit” list for Niagara Falls, New York: the Underground Railroad Heritage Center . We missed it only because it wasn’t open the day we were on the New York side of Niagara Falls! This is a must-visit if you’re considering a 4 day Niagara Falls itinerary, which would give you plenty of time to explore both sides.

This region played a critical role in the search for freedom by self-emancipated Black Americans. Translation? Even as formerly enslaved people traveled up the East Coast or through Ohio away from “slave states”, the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 kept them at risk as long as they remained in the United States. Thousands of people flooded across the Niagara River Suspension Bridge to reach safety and freedom in Canada – you can read more details here .

At the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center you’ll learn the stories of individual freedom seekers and pay homage to their lives through a unique art, interactive exhibits and more. Guided tours are available morning and afternoon most days of the week.

Visiting Niagara Falls Canada FAQs

Niagara Falls is the connection point between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. It straddles the border between southern Ontario, Canada and western New York State.

The Canadian side of Niagara Falls affords a more complete view and robust tourism infrastructure for visiting Niagara Falls.

My daughter and I are in Toronto for just four days, and I rented a car from 6 PM Thursday to 6 PM Friday so we could drive out to London to see Western University. I thought about trying to cram in the most American thing ever… a drive-by visit to Niagara Falls!

Thanks to your article I was able to make a plan that worked fine. We left downtown Toronto at 6 AM, arrived at the Falls at 7:30 AM, turned towards the power station and parked in the tour bus only lot that is just 50 yards from the best view of all. No one is out enforcing anything at that time in the morning, so we got a few photos and a video and made it to Western with half an hour to spare. On the return trip we got the car back with another half hour to spare.

Couldn’t follow your recommendations to really take everything in, but it’s better to have seen it than not, yes? I thought it was so majestic at that hour, though very misty.

Hi Melissa, planning our first family trip to Niagara Falls. Planning to visit both the US and the CAN side. From research, it seems choosing to stay in a hotel on the CAN side is preferred. We are flying from Louisiana. Should we fly into Toronto (YYZ)? 2 hour ride to get to Ontario. However, I don’t know if it would be feasible to fly into closer Niagara Falls Airport (IAG) then cross the Rainbow Bridge with all four of us pulling our carryon luggage to get to our CAN hotel. Getting Around and Planning Your Trip

Q: Can I use an electric scooter in the park? A: Accessibility scooters are permitted. However, Niagara Falls State Park currently does not allow recreational electric scooters or bicycles to be operated on any of the walking/pedestrian paths in Niagara Falls State Park. Therefore, any paths in Niagara Falls State Park that the general public cannot access by motor vehicle are designated as walking/pedestrian paths. Recreational electric scooters and bicycles can be operated on the public roadways with a speed limit of less than 30mph. Standard traffic laws apply (stop signs, red lights, etc). Operators will be stopped and ticketed for operating recreational electric scooters on the paths in Niagara Falls State Park. Those tickets carry a maximum fine of $250.00. Operators can be held civilly liable for injury to others or damage to property caused by a collision.

Q: Is the Park accessible to the disabled? A: Yes. All of our attractions and most footpaths are fully accessible, suitable for wheelchairs and excellent views of Niagara Falls.

Q: Are wheelchairs and strollers available? A: Wheelchairs and Strollers are not available for rent or loan within the park.

Q: Where can I find something to eat? A: Niagara Falls State Park has a number of food service outlets ranging from grab-and-go snack bars and cafes to the spectacular Top of the Falls Restaurant, which provides visitors floor-to-ceiling views of the Falls from every table.
