Portability

Many pampered pooches will also have day beds for when they need to catch a quick 40 winks (watching out for delivery drivers is tiring work).

Much like humans, the best bed for your dog will depend on how they like to sleep. Some like to spread out, so need a bit more room, while others like to burrow in and get extra cosy. These are some of the key factors you should consider before investing, according to Johanna Buitelaar-Warden, founder of Lords and Labradors.

Even if your dog usually likes to curl up, make sure the bed is big enough for them to stretch out in if they want, but not too big that they struggle to get cosy.

“To determine the size of bed needed, measure your furry friend from nose to back paws while they're sleeping,” says Buitelaar-Warden. “Then, add 25 centimetres onto this figure, and choose a bed with a similar length.”

You’ll also need to consider where the bed will live (choose a private, draught-free spot) and whether you have the space for your chosen design.

“Consider both your dog's size and sleeping habits when choosing the right bed,” says Buitelaar-Warden. “Pay attention to how they sleep daily, whether they stretch out or prefer curling up.” Here are the designs she recommends for different sleep styles.

Mattress or cushion style beds : “These provide ample space for dogs who love to sprawl out in their sleep as they have open sides and can be easily moved around.”

High wall beds: “These offer support for those who like to curl up with something to lean on.”

Donut beds : “They provide ample support and are ideal for anxious dogs seeking comfort in a cocoon-like space.” Like nests, these beds are made from super-soft material with a raised rim to make them feel safe and protected.

Box beds : “These suit those pups who love to stretch out, but still want a soft headrest.”

Orthopaedic beds : “They cater to specific health needs, providing support for joint problems or senior dogs.” These beds are often shallower and can feature supportive memory foam mattresses.

Den (or hooded) beds : “These are perfect for burrowers like Dachshunds or Jack Russells, offering a cosy hideaway with an attached blanket for added comfort.”

If you have a mucky pup, you’ll want a bed that has a removable cover you can pop in the machine or is completely machine-washable (although check it isn’t too big and bulky to go in your washing machine). Your dog’s bed should be washed once a week or every two weeks at a minimum. You can also air it outside and give it a vacuum in between washes.

Dogs are prone to chewing their bed or occasionally dragging them around the floor, so look for a durable fabric. You also want something soft, yet stain-resistant. Microfibre is a good option as it also absorbs moisture well if your dog comes in wet from their walk. Cotton is another great pick as it’s breathable and hypoallergenic.

This may be one of the pricier picks on our list by far, but it is super practical and adaptable – perfect for pups who are always on the go.

It is a calming bed, so ideal if your dog gets anxious when travelling or when away from home. It is primarily designed for use in a car, turning the full half of the backseat into a full bed or a comfy travel booster seat.

There are strong woven handles that allow you to take it on the go, carrying it to your destination. But there are also four points of contact on the bed so you can safely strap it to the backseat and it will stay still.

The bed is made from a durable nano-nylon fabric that protects it from rips, tears, scratches, or even liquid. It will also keep your car safe from mud and damage. When you’re not in the car, the bed lays out flat to give a roomy comfortable base.

This bed isn’t only our best budget pick, but also really easy to use as and when you need it. So, if your dog uses a crate when at home or simply sleeps next to your desk and you don’t want to have to move their normal bed, its placement is really flexible.

It’s available in five different colours, so if you have more than one dog they can each have their own. Water-resistant and durable, the 1200D oxford material is waterproof. It only needs a wipe to get rid of hair and mud, but can be washed by hand too.

There’s a dotted non-slip base, and it is lightweight to carry. Our main niggle is that it’s a bit bulky to carry, so maybe best for anyone with a car rather than on foot.

When you are camping in Summer, it can get quite hot and stuffy in a tent – especially when you have furry four-legged friends in there, too. You may also want a day on the beach or in the park and want to take them with you.

Overheating for dogs is just as dangerous as it is for humans and they can’t self-regulate as easily, especially when you are all socialising and they just want to be involved. Off camping when the weather is warm? You lucky thing.

Your dog will likely benefit from a raised, cool bed though. The hard floor won’t be very comfortable, and if you want to keep them off your own sleeping arrangements, they will need something of their own.

The benefits of a raised bed go way beyond being cooler than thick padded material. You can store things underneath, so it takes up less room – great if you’re in a compact tent. It all collapses really small, too. As long as you take an alan key with you, it is simple to build back up too.

A bit more faff than the others on our list, but if it will make things more comfortable it is worth it.

How we chose the best dog travel beds.

Your desired properties may depend on where you are going, your dog’s personality and how they like to sleep so it can be hard finding the right balance. But in general, we considered everything below.

It is good to try and find a balance between waterproof material and comfort. Whether the bed will be on the plain ground, or your dog will be muddy, they still need to sleep well. Many travel beds are made from some sort of nylon or polyester which gives a good balance. This is why a home dog bed won’t suffice, as they aren’t made for the great outdoors.

There are beds made from more plush fabrics or which are completely waterproof if necessary, though. All of those on our list are washable, either by hand or by washing machine. Perfect for when you get home and are already getting everything ready for the next trip.

There is no point in buying something which is small and space-saving during transportation if your dog can’t fit on it when going to sleep. Most of those on our list come in varying sizes so you can opt for the best.

If you do need a larger bed for your huge breed, look out for portability properties such as it being foldable/rollable or coming in a carry bag with handles. Some will roll into the size of a human sleeping bag so aren’t too bulky to carry.

But don’t get one that is too big, for your sake – when space is limited, you don’t want to be struggling. Something like a raised bed could work well here.

Most travel dog beds will either roll or fold up, with buckles or ties to keep it all together and handles for easier carrying. Think about just how you will be carrying it, though. If you’re just going from the car to a campsite or beach, carry handles are fine, but if you are off on a hike with a large rucksack, you may want something which can fasten to this like your human sleeping bag.

There are also different types of dog travel beds available. Do they want a sleeping bag? Just a foam mat? A very cushioned almost-good-enough-for-human-use bed? While they can’t answer your question, think about how they sleep at home. If they’re always under a blanket, a sleeping bag could be good. They will still be able to just sleep on top of it if it is warm.

If you will be staying in a car or have a long drive, dedicated dog travel beds are available. They can still be used in a tent or outside, but are usually more plush and able to safely secure to a car seat.

Gone are the days when a dog bed meant an old blanket or towel scrunched up on the kitchen floor. But, like humans with mattresses , which one will suit your four-legged friend will depend on how they like to sleep.

Some dogs like burrowing down into a bed, while others like to sprawl all over a bed, possibly hanging off the end as they get some rest.

It’s worth thinking about how and where your dog sleeps before you start perusing beds. Next, think about how much your dog’s bed will need to be washed. If your pup is mud-averse, it’s likely the bed won’t be in and out of the washing machine too much.

On the other hand, if you’ve got a pup that likes to roll in anything it can find or even one that can’t resist jumping in any body of water, you’ll need a dog bed that has covers that’ll unzip completely, enabling you to wash them frequently without shrinkage or misshaping.

While us humans checked the ethical and environmental credentials of the beds and washed the covers to test how easily they could be cleaned, it was our furry friends who had the hard job.

Our pack of testers were nothing if not rigorous – with a combined nap time of more than 1,000 hours, they put each bed on our list through its paces. Our furry testers tried it at a local pub and seemed to enjoy the familiar scent and warmth of a bed on which they’d already slept. Available in five different designs, this bed is a must for on-the-go dogs. You can also add a carabiner (£2.50, Jacwicksdesigns.co.uk ) to the bed, which means you can clip it onto your bag. Fully washable, it stays waterproof after washing, too.

Lords & Labradors calming anti-anxiety dog bed in faux wolf fur

If the clever folk at Lords & Labradors made human-sized versions of this dog bed, we suspect they’d sell very well. This bed is entirely handmade and the fur walls and base gave our nervous tester a fully rested night’s sleep. The inner cushion is reversible, so your pooch can either rest on the faux wolf fur or opt for the velvet underside and just enjoy the faux fur on the walls. This is one of the softest beds we tested, and it looks beautiful, too. It’s got a non-slip base and, despite the faux fur looking like it should be hand-washed and brushed, it washed in the machine brilliantly, and came out looking as good as new.

Slumbering Hound deluxe dog snuggle sack

When the car is packed for a holiday, there’s not always room for a full-size dog bed – but that’s where the snuggle sack from Slumbering Hound can help. Essentially a huge, fur-lined, super cosy sack, this is perfect for taking away with you. If your dog bed traditionally stays in the kitchen or lounge, this is a great alternative for other rooms, too.

Our testers loved being able to manipulate it and burrow into it as well as having the sack pulled over them when they were snoozing, as it offers extra warmth and cosiness. All the seams are hidden, so they can’t be unpicked by chewers, and it washed brilliantly at 30C.

An entirely waterproof bed with an incredibly durable, removable cover made from sail fabric, this huge bed (110cm x 100cm) accommodated two of our testers at the same time, and reflated perfectly when they got off it. The inside has separate compartments to make sure the stuffing stays even, no matter where your dog lies.

As for the design, there are so many to choose from, including Audrey Hepburn’s Holly Golightly, and Frida Kahlo, but it’s Neil Armstrong’s hairdo photoshopped onto a Jack Russell that got our winning vote. The image quality is brilliant and, while our testers loved it, it also garnered envious comments from visitors. If you’re looking for a stylish bed that doesn’t sacrifice comfort, this is it.

Big Dog Bed incontinence bed for dogs

This fantastic company supports the StreetVet charity and donates beds to them. It’s also one of the most environmentally friendly producers on the list, with its electricity coming from solar panels.

While not every dog will struggle with incontinence, there can be accidents due to old age or surgery, and this bed is perfect for those times. The waterproof and wipe-clean covers have thermally welded seams, so the beds are completely sealed. The cover fabric is also antibacterial and can handle medical-grade disinfectant.

The cushion inside the covers is a pressure-relief one, and has a high-density foam base. Currently only available in royal blue, each bed is made to order.

MiLounge human dog bed

Available in beige, as well as dark and light grey, MiLounge’s human dog bed comes complete with a removable and machine-washable faux-fur cover; adjustable pillow bolsters that can be moved for maximum comfort; and handles for ease of transport. It is suitable for anyone up to 6ft 3in tall, which means it will fit every four-legged friend, from a chihuahua to a great dane.

It’s comfortable, feels very much like a cocoon and we managed a full-length movie in it, without anyone fidgeting.

While this one seemed on the smaller side for our large testers, once curled up and cosied in, they didn’t even open an eyelid when the postman knocked. The eco wool surround is made entirely of recycled yarn, and each bed is made entirely in Great Britain. The mattress is orthopaedic, made with memory foam, and designed in conjunction with a veterinary surgeon. Plus, the lowered edge over one side makes for easy access.

The side cushions are made from foam rather than a filling, which means they keep their structure even with a heavy labrador head sleeping on it for weeks of testing. Available with a fleece topper – again made from 100 per cent British wool – this bed is one of the most stylish and classy-looking in our list. It’s also completely machine washable.

If you’ve got a dog that likes baking in the summer sunshine, this is the bed you need. The fact it’s raised off the ground means there’s air circulation underneath, to keep even the warmest black-coated dog cool in the summer. Also, the UV canopy offers sun protection but is detachable for when the bed is in the shade. It collapses down and stores away easily, which means it can go into the garage or loft in the winter, or into the back of the car for a summer holiday.

All the covers are machine washable – although, it wipes clean really well because of the mesh panels – and its non-slip feet mean it’s as at home indoors as it is in the garden.

The microbial memory foam mattress base is among the most comfortable in this list, and the four ethically sourced duck-feather filled bolster inserts can be manipulated however your pet likes, re-plumping perfectly between uses. Mini bolster pads can also be bought, and the fully removeable covers are all machine washable.

Big, comfy and perfect for more than one dog at a time, this bed kept its shape and, thanks to the generously filled mattress, it plumped back up again when it wasn’t in use. Its simple, rectangular design might not have the cocooning effect of some other dog beds but our testers loved curling in the middle of it and dangling off the edge during warmer days or when the heating was on.

The anti-slip base means it stays put, and the entire zip-off cover makes for easy washing, coming out good as new at 30C. It’s also entirely manufactured in the UK, using recycled materials equivalent to 750 plastic bottles, so it makes a good choice if you’re worried about your dog’s carbon paw print.

By far the most expensive on our list, this dog bed is for the pup who has everything. The Cornish Bed company initially made the bed as a smaller version of their bed for humans, for trade show purposes, but started getting orders from people who wanted one for their pets. So, the team has diversified, using all their skills to make dog bed versions of their beds for humans.

Each one is made to order with a fully sustainable and organic mattress and customised finish in a choice of colours. The upholstered base is filled with natural coconut coir and organic lambswool, while the frame is hand fettled by artisan craftsmen, featuring authentic cast knuckle joints made using traditional methods at the foundry in Cornwall. The bespoke options also include a four-poster version. It’s worth noting the cushion is sold separately.

This dog bed tested brilliantly, especially with our 11-year-old labrador. The orthopaedic foam mattress distributes weight very well, and the slightly raised edges mean pets can be cosied up against them or rest a chin on top of them.

It’s one of the more affordable designs that we’ve reviewed but beat some of its more expensive rivals when it came to where our testers chose to sleep. The non-slip base also means it stays put when paws are manipulating it or burrowing into it to find their comfy spot.

If you opt for the extra large (117cm x 85cm) version of this dog bed, make sure you have ample space for it, as the design is among the biggest in this round-up.

This deep-filled pillow cushion made from memory and orthopaedic foam crumb keeps its shape and kept our heaviest tester elevated – in fact, they barely made a dent in the dense and comfortable mattress, even after sleeping on it overnight.

Among those in our list, this is the only dog bed that can be personalised with your pet’s name (or multiple names, if it’s going to be shared).

Most owners who tried the Carlson Elevated Bed liked it, and most pets seemed to like it as well. The majority of owners who tried the Kurgo Loft Wander Bed were happy with their purchase. Many praised the rubberized bottom, which helped to keep the bed in place, while dogs seemed to love the comfort the bed provided. The handle was also a welcome addition, according to many owners who purchased the bed.

The only common problem most owners reported was the lack of sufficient padding, but this only seemed to be a problem for a small subset of dogs and their owners. A few owners also complained about the price of the bed (especially a portable bed only used occasionally when merited), but most still consider it to be a good value.

Most owners liked Kopeks Elevated Bed and found that it provided their pup with a comfortable place to sleep. Several owners also reported that the bed was very easy to put together and take apart, which makes it great for taking on adventures.

Unfortunately, the manufacturer does not provide a recommended weight range, and a few owners of medium to large dogs reported that the bed was not strong enough for their pup. This is disappointing, as the bed is certainly large enough for big dogs, and it is much larger than necessary for small pups.

Unfortunately it's not possible to "try before you buy" so we've compiled a series of features you should consider before making your purchase.

The bed needs to be slightly larger than your dog but also consider where you are planning to place the bed in your home. Don't buy a bed too big for your space.

Sleeping Position

Have a look at what position your pooch sleeps in. Curled up in a ball suggests a circular nest bed whilst sprawled out may suit a larger mattress or pillow style bed.

If you've got an older dog who suffers from joint pain or arthritis, consider investing in a memory foam mattress or a specific orthopaedic bed for extra support and comfort.

Buying for the latest addition to your family ? It may be worth getting a cheaper bed until they're fully grown, then invest in something a bit grander. How to secure your dog in your car

If you want to put your dog crate in your boot, remove the parcel shelf and measure the interior of your car boot. Compare these to the dimensions of the crate you select. Make sure the crate is as snug as possible, the less it can move the safer it will be.

Smaller crates for small dogs can go in the back seat footwell – but again, check the measurements to be sure that it will fit snugly.

If you want to put your dog on the back seat rather than on the floor, don’t use a seatbelt to secure the crate unless the manufacturer specifically says their crate is safe for this - some are not and you could be putting your dog at risk. A safer option is to use a pet hammock and place the crate inside. This way, they won't be thrown forward into the front of the car if you brake suddenly.

The only drawback is its washability, however. The base cushion can be popped in the washing machine with no trouble, but the rest of the bed is sadly sponge clean only which may make keeping it spick and span a little trickier than other beds. Most rooms are dog-friendly – including some suites – as well as the lounge and the restaurant. Along the South West Coast Path , there are "wide expanses of beaches for splashing about in with abandon", although "the dogs may find the temperatures a little less daunting than the humans", said Good Housekeeping . In need of sustenance? Head for "the 'Garavan', on hand to dispense coffees, drinks and snacks for owners, with water bowls and pet-friendly treats available too".

St Michaels Resort is one of Cornwall's "most affordable and easy going hotels", said The Telegraph . Swanpool Beach and the town centre are a 15-minute walk away, while the coastal path and Gyllyngvase Beach are "right on the hotel's doorstep". A handful of the resort's rooms and beach residences are suitable for pets. The location makes for "easy early-morning and sunset walks on the sand", said The Observer , and "dogs are welcomed with pet beds, towels, treats and a doggie guide to local attractions".

Reopened after extensive renovations in 2021, it "manages to intertwine grandeur and elegance with an achingly cool zeitgeisty atmosphere", said Condé Nast Traveller, featuring "opulent bedrooms" and "intimate alcoves tucked beside roaring fires". Outside, the hotel grounds and nearby dog-friendly beaches are "bound to ensure that four-legged residents sleep deeply come evening".

The Fife Arms, Braemar, Highlands

Four-legged friends find a warm welcome at the Fife Arms

Run by Iwan and Manuela Wirth – "arguably the most influential contemporary art dealers in the world", said Condé Nast Traveller – this former hunting lodge near Balmoral Castle in Scotland is their first hotel venture. Dog-friendly rooms are on the first floor, "furnished with food and water bowls, a special Fife Arms dog bed, a welcome package of treats and a turndown gift". The setting is "a playground for dogs", said The Telegraph, and "four-legged friends are welcome in The Flying Stag", a "jolly and noisy" bar serving "gently upgraded pub favourites like buckeye rarebit or Highland beef and bone marrow burger".

This "Regency pile" is "affordable, fun and unstuffy", said The Times . It's situated close to Newbury, with "expansive grounds for pets to roam" and nearby walking trails, said Good Housekeeping. Grove of Narberth is set among the "undulating greenery of Pembrokeshire" with, "in the distance, the Preseli mountains", said Condé Nast Traveller. This is "Pembrokeshire's smartest country house hotel", said The Telegraph, in a "thoroughly rural and peaceful spot near the pretty little town of Narberth". Its "pet-friendly amenities include towels, blankets, treats and a special menu". Dogs are welcome in six rooms, which all have gardens, a terrace or access to open spaces.

"This Georgian manor house and estate is a Hampshire hidden gem," said The Telegraph, and it's ideal for dogs, with "500 acres of beautiful surrounding countryside to frolic around in". Dogs are given "beds, bowls, treats, spring water and even grooming products", and the "doormen are ready to dispense bags for walkies or arrange dog sitting", said Country Living . Pets are welcome everywhere except the Wild Carrot restaurant, but "that shouldn't be a problem" as the room-service menu has a "dedicated pet section" and the library bar serves a "special doggy afternoon tea".

The Fish Hotel, Broadway, Worcestershire

This "back-to-nature bolthole sprawls across a 400-acre estate in the Cotswolds", said Condé Nast Traveller. It has a "cluster of quirky country houses, shepherd's huts and treehouses" that feel "romantic, cosy and Scandi-cool" in equal parts. "Tails will be wagging at the idea of so much space on the doorstep", said Good Housekeeping. Every dog receives "its own cosy dog bed in the room, two dog bowls, doggie treats and a dog towel", and there are other canine comforts including "a dog bathtub and shampoo for post-walk washing, a dog agility course, a boot room with spare tennis balls and dog walking maps, and doggy afternoon teas at The Lounge", said The Telegraph.

The Mitre Hotel, East Molesey, Surrey

"Once a 'hostel' for Hampton Court Palace guests", said The Telegraph, this is now a "characterful boutique hotel filled with wonderful antiques, stylishly designed rooms, hand-painted de Gournay wallpaper and the odd nod to King Henry VIII himself". Across the Thames from Hampton Court Palace, The Mitre has "canine-friendly rooms on the ground floor" with "access to an outdoor terrace", said Condé Nast Traveller, and a welcome pack (bed, bowl, poop bags and treats) on arrival. Dogs can accompany owners to the Coppernose restaurant, "set in a rotunda with Thames views", and there's also a "sizeable river terrace and Orangery space". You'll find "good walks along the footpath past the palace", or next door in Bushy Park, although "be mindful of the deer during rutting season".
