Travel dog beds and car seats are some of the best dog travel accessories for when you're staycationing in the UK because it means you've got somewhere safe for your pooch to travel during the car journey. Plus, they're easy to pack up and go when you're on the road. Even if you're not going on your holidays, they're ideal for taking your dog on a long walk or visiting friends, too.

We know that not all dogs are fans of car travel. Many bark and howl, others are quiet and shake, and some may even try to escape and jump in the front to sit with you. Having a safe space, whether that's a car seat or dog bed, for your hound is important for ensuring they stay calm and comfy for the duration of the journey. The Highway Code also states that pets need to be suitably restrained so they cannot be a distraction to you while driving or injure either you or themselves if you have to stop quickly.

Plus, if you're looking for an option to soothe your dog while on a car journey, a travel dog bed is a good pick because it's the closest style to their bed at home.

Whether you opt for a dog car crate or cage to keep your dog secure, or your boot seats are high enough that your dog can't jump over them, there are plenty of car seats and travel dog beds to choose from that you can sling in the back of your car for when they're needed. It's also waterproof and made from durable ripstop fabric and has zippered openings for access to seatbelts. It slips over your car seats and blocks access to the front seats so your dog won't distract you as much while driving.

Customer review : "I originally purchased the regular Kurgo Loft Car seat cover for my other car and when in the market for a second, found this hammock style. The hammock style really makes a difference in preventing my curious, affectionate dog from distracting me while I drive. The clips are strong and secure. The quilted satiny fabric seems durable and the bright blue is refreshing and energising. I recently had a flea infestation and washed everything my dog ever touched - it was a mess and I tossed this seat cover into the wash without even reading the care instructions (don't recommend usually), put this on the allergy cycle and it came out just as nice. I am impressed!"

  • Durable water and stain-resistant
  • Zippered openings for seat belts
  • Some dogs may not like how a car hammock has a barrier between them and the front seat

10. Pets at Home Car Seat Mat

Best dog car mat seat.

Customer review : "Super easy to fit in any seat in the car, non slip backing prevents it sliding anywhere, easy access to seatbelts either side, nice and soft on the paws. Totally pawesome seat mat, much easier and more fit for purpose than any others I've tried before. Buy it!!!"

  • Fully machine washable to reduce bacteria build-up
  • Hooks around the headrest
  • Suitable for most car seats
  • Some dogs may prefer a seat over this mat as it doesn't have much padding in comparison

What to look for in travel dog beds, travel mats and car seats

When trying to decide whether travel dog beds, travel mats or car seats are best for your on-the-go needs, there are a couple of things you should look at to help you make your decision.

Portability

Whether your chosen dog bed, mat or car seat is easy to transport is probably the biggest factor you'll want to think about. Make sure it's lightweight enough for you to pop it in the back of the car or take it with you down to the beach or to a friend's house. Look for features such as handles and storage bags to make it even easier to carry around.

Is the size of your dog bed big enough for your pooch to fit completely in? This may not be as much of an issue to consider for smaller dogs, however for larger dogs, you'll want to make sure they've got equally got enough room to stretch out as they do curl up, with all of them being able to fit inside for a comfortable ride.

Cleanability

If you've taken your pooch on a particularly muddy walk or they've had a paddle in the sea, the last thing you'll want to worry about is how you're going to get their travel bed clean and dry again. Look for a bed that can be wiped clean or, better still, has a removable cover that can be popped straight into the washing machine when you get back. It'll be an added bonus if you choose one that's waterproof or made from water-resistant material.

Whether you're looking for a travel dog bed, a dog booster seat for your car, or a roll-up mat that can double up as a bed for whenever your pooch needs proper rest, we've selected options that will suit all breeds.

Can my dog travel in the car?

Yes, dogs are allowed to travel in cars, but they need to be secure. It's a legal requirement to make sure your dog is restrained when they're in the car so they can't distract you while you're driving or injure you or themselves if you stop quickly.

There are several pet safety travel products you can use to make sure they are comfortably restrained, like a seat belt harness or a specially designed lead that can be attached to a headrest or your car seat belt.

Some may prefer to opt for a dog guard to separate them from their boot and seats, a dog car crate, or a dog cage for car travel. If your pooch tends to be quite nervous while travelling in the car, you may want to opt for an anti-anxiety dog bed to help them feel more relaxed and calmer..

How long can a dog travel in the car?

Whenever you travel with your dog in the car, you'll want to make sure to take plenty of breaks so your pooch has a chance to go to the toilet and stop for food and drink. Depending on how old your pooch is and how long they can do without needing the toilet, you should be able to travel a couple of hours before you need to stop.

16 best dog beds, according to pet parents

Washable and comfy, these beds will keep pets and owners happy

best dog beds

This article was updated in March to reflect the most up to date prices and deals.

Given that 31% of UK households now have a dog and they are a very important (if not the most important) member of the family, it’s no surprise there's a huge choice of dog beds out there, including orthopaedic options, ones made to soothe sensitive pups and even self-heating designs. Many pampered pooches will also have day beds for when they need to catch a quick 40 winks (watching out for delivery drivers is tiring work).

They expect their creature comforts, which is why we’ve searched high and low to find the best dog beds on the market to ensure they get a great night’s sleep. We’ve also asked pet parents to give us their recommendations.

These are our top picks but read on for everything you need to know before you add to basket.

Best for smaller dogs

Pets at home teddy oval dog bed grey x small, what’s the best type of bed for a dog.

Much like humans, the best bed for your dog will depend on how they like to sleep. Some like to spread out, so need a bit more room, while others like to burrow in and get extra cosy. These are some of the key factors you should consider before investing, according to Johanna Buitelaar-Warden, founder of Lords and Labradors.

Even if your dog usually likes to curl up, make sure the bed is big enough for them to stretch out in if they want, but not too big that they struggle to get cosy.

“To determine the size of bed needed, measure your furry friend from nose to back paws while they're sleeping,” says Buitelaar-Warden. “Then, add 25 centimetres onto this figure, and choose a bed with a similar length.”

You’ll also need to consider where the bed will live (choose a private, draught-free spot) and whether you have the space for your chosen design.

“Consider both your dog's size and sleeping habits when choosing the right bed,” says Buitelaar-Warden. “Pay attention to how they sleep daily, whether they stretch out or prefer curling up.” Here are the designs she recommends for different sleep styles.

Mattress or cushion style beds : “These provide ample space for dogs who love to sprawl out in their sleep as they have open sides and can be easily moved around.”

High wall beds: “These offer support for those who like to curl up with something to lean on.”

Donut beds : “They provide ample support and are ideal for anxious dogs seeking comfort in a cocoon-like space.” Like nests, these beds are made from super-soft material with a raised rim to make them feel safe and protected.

Box beds : “These suit those pups who love to stretch out, but still want a soft headrest.”

Orthopaedic beds : “They cater to specific health needs, providing support for joint problems or senior dogs.” These beds are often shallower and can feature supportive memory foam mattresses.

Den (or hooded) beds : “These are perfect for burrowers like Dachshunds or Jack Russells, offering a cosy hideaway with an attached blanket for added comfort.”

If you have a mucky pup, you’ll want a bed that has a removable cover you can pop in the machine or is completely machine-washable (although check it isn’t too big and bulky to go in your washing machine). Your dog’s bed should be washed once a week or every two weeks at a minimum. You can also air it outside and give it a vacuum in between washes.

Dogs are prone to chewing their bed or occasionally dragging them around the floor, so look for a durable fabric. You also want something soft, yet stain-resistant. Microfibre is a good option as it also absorbs moisture well if your dog comes in wet from their walk. Cotton is another great pick as it’s breathable and hypoallergenic.

Now you know the essentials, let’s run through our favourite picks. All prices are for a medium-sized bed.

Ivy & Duke The Lounger Dog Bed

The Lounger is a quality dog bed that comes with a memory foam pad for extra comfort and sides for resting tired heads on. With an easy-to-remove machine-washable fabric cover, it’s also a practical pick. Plus, the brand sells spare fabric covers to use while your first set is in the wash, and waterproof covers for rainy days.

This bed was tested by the GHI , who sent it out to seven panellists (and their pups) to try at home over several weeks, reporting back on comfort and design. The GHI experts also assessed it for any colour fade or shrinkage after multiple washes. Testers were impressed with the quality of the material and found it washed well and retained its shape.

The dogs were happy too, with one owner telling us: “The memory foam cushions provide a lot of support and comfort for the dogs, and they really seem to enjoy it.”

There is a choice of five sizes and 15 different chic designs, including a duck egg check and pink tweed. Yes, it’s pricey but this is a premium buy that’s made to last.

Key specifications:

Silentnight knows a thing or two about good sleep, so its Airmax pet bed is a smart buy. It features a mesh fabric that allows air to circulate through the mattress to stop your pup from overheating. The cushion is also dual-sided with a fleece top for nights when they want to be cosy and a cooling side made with quilted, moisture wicking fabric for warm evenings.

The durable cover is also removable and machine washable so you don’t have to worry about muddy paws. This is a great, year-round bed.

You’ve probably seen these donut beds on social media (certainly if you're an avid watcher of cute dog videos). Ideal for more anxious pups, they act like a cosy nest that supports and protects them as they sleep.

This bed (again from the pros at Silentnight) has a super-soft, plush cover and is filled with responsive fibres to cocoon them while they nod off. The whole bed is machine washable so you can keep it smelling fresh and it comes in a choice of five shades.

If you want a bed they can lie on in the back garden, in the car or if you have a senior dog prone to accidents, consider this waterproof mattress. Water runs off the durable Oxford fabric, which is also resistant to hair and easy to spot clean with a cloth. The hidden zip also makes it simple to disassemble and wash.

Note that some owners felt this was water-resistant rather than waterproof as some liquid did leak through to the foam inside. However, most were satisfied and it’s a good price for a reliable mattress.

This quality mattress from the experts at Slumberdown has been designed with bigger dogs (or multiple dogs) in mind, with an extra-large size available.

The thick cushion is filled with soft hollowfibre and has a fleecy finish with a removable, washable cover. Spare covers are available if you want to change the design, too.

Great for senior dogs, this uniquely designed bed from Emme is topped with plush faux fur and has an egg-crate orthopaedic foam base that evenly distributes body weight to soothe any aches and pains.

It also has an easy access design and a non-slip bottom. Two strong zippers mean you can easily remove every part of the bed for washing. Either put on a cool wash or hand wash to extend the bed’s life. This is a great option for a gentle, restorative sleep.

Morris & Co. Willow Bough Dog Mattress

If you’re looking for a stylish daybed for your pampered pooch, this Morris & Co design may be for you. Made from a linen and cotton blend with a thick, soft pad and a waterproof, non-slip base, this will be a great spot for napping. It also features a muted, nature-inspired William Morris print.

The cover can be unzipped and washed if needed. We suggest shaking it out and giving it a quick vacuum to freshen up every few days, and pop a towel over it on wet days.

"The 3 Peaks dog bed is great if you want to take your pet on a walking holiday as it’s wipe clean after muddy walks and dries quickly,” says Fiona Andrews, dog parent to miniature wire haired dachshund, Ronnie. “It’s super tough for any dogs that like to have a good chew on their beds too.”

Tough, durable and comfortable, this is the perfect pick for dogs who love to explore (see it here modelled by Labrador puppy, Ralph). It's also portable, so great for taking on adventures.

With a fleece top and a memory foam mattress, this bed offers a good balance between firm and comfy. It’s definitely one for those who love to snuggle up as they sleep.

It also has a machine-washable cover so you can nix any BO smells. One buyer noted that the dip in the middle isn’t great for dogs who like to stretch out, so avoid if you have a spreader!

"My dog Angua (seen above) adores her ‘teddy’ bed from Pets at Home,” says owner Emma Franklin. “It’s got soft but high walls so she feels like she’s in her own cave, and is super soft and cosy from the fleece lining.”

This one only comes in extra small (dimensions: 21 x 48 x 39cm) so it's best for smaller dogs who like to curl up like Angua. It also has a removable cushion that's machine washable, so freshening up is a cinch.

Swyft K9-03 Dog Sofa

Swyft K9-03 Dog Sofa

If your dog is always stealing your spot on the sofa at night, why not get them their own? For the pup who has everything, there’s the Swyft K9-03 mini sofa, which features stain-resistant velvet fabric, a comfortable foam-filled base and bolster cushions for their head. It's also available in eight different colours.

Yes, it’s an indulgence and we suggest adding a blanket for mucky paws but some VIPups deserve only the best.

Paw Print Oval Pet Bed

Paw Print Oval Pet Bed

If they just want somewhere cosy to lay their head at night, this affordable paw print design is more than adequate. It has a wipe clean base and non-slip backing and is machine washable (note, you can’t remove the cushion).

Owners recommend sizing up as it’s quite compact. It also doesn't come in large, so probably isn’t suited to bigger dogs, but it’s a comfy, budget pick.

Oliver Bonas Wavy Black Pet Bed

Oliver Bonas Wavy Black Pet Bed

Okay, the aesthetics are more for you than them, but if you want a statement bed to fit into your home, this monochrome wavy pattern with green piping will definitely do the job.

Made from cotton and polyester, it has a non-slip base, removable cushion inners and a zip closure, so you can pop the cover in the wash at 30 degrees.

Barbour Tartan Quilted Dog Bed, Olive Green

Barbour Tartan Quilted Dog Bed, Olive Green

This premium Barbour bed boasts a classic waxed cotton outer and inner tartan design – perfect for a country dog (or those that aspire to be country dogs).

It has soft sides they can rest their head on, a dropped front for easy access and the cushion pad is removable and washable. It does come up small due to the chunky sides, so we suggest sizing up.

Wainwright's Adventurer Self Heat Mattress Dog Bed

Wainwright's Adventurer Self Heat Mattress Dog Bed

For pups that like to be warm and cosy, consider this attractive bed from Wainwright’s. The cushion has a layer of heat reflective material designed to retain your dog’s heat.

It’s not just for winter though – flip the dual-sided cushion so your furry friend can sleep on the cooler side when the weather heats up. The cover is also machine washable for easy cleaning.

Lords & Labradors Essentials Herdwick Den Dog Bed

Lords & Labradors Essentials Herdwick Den Dog Bed

Providing the ultimate comfort for burrowers is this den bed from Lords and Labradors, which combines a comforting donut design with a built-in cover.

Made in Italy from super plush fabric with a removable cover for washing (although, note, it's hand-wash only), this is the perfect bed for hibernating in. We kind of want one for ourselves.

Best Dog Travel Beds for 2022

When you’re off on a Staycation, camping trip or just a long hike for the day, taking all of your dog’s usual bedding can seem like you’re carrying everything but the kitchen sink.

That’s why travel bedding exists. Easier to transport and carry without taking away from the experience, they allow your pooch to come with you wherever you go. They will still get a restful night’s sleep, too.

Many offer cooling properties and are waterproof. This means that it doesn’t matter if your dog is a bit muddy, or if the bed is placed straight onto the ground either. Some fold up very small for transportation. There are even a few which are inflatable. Or, why not try a sleeping bag if they always need to be covered with a blanket?

Whatever your needs, there’s a good selection out there. It is worth thinking about your dog’s sleeping style and your budget too.  Below are the best we found.

There are two sizes available. The small/medium (20″ x 20″) is ideal for puppies or smaller breeds. If you are looking for something larger, the 30″x 30″ Large – XLarge is ideal. This is definitely a product for anyone wanting something long-lasting and durable.

  • Great for cushioning
  • Comes in a small bag
  • Strong material which can wipe clean
  • Dimensions: 20" or 30"

5. Luther Bennett Luxury Dog Bed

Luther Bennett Luxury Dog Bed

This may be one of the pricier picks on our list by far, but it is super practical and adaptable – perfect for pups who are always on the go.

It is a calming bed, so ideal if your dog gets anxious when travelling or when away from home. It is primarily designed for use in a car, turning the full half of the backseat into a full bed or a comfy travel booster seat.

There are strong woven handles that allow you to take it on the go, carrying it to your destination. But there are also four points of contact on the bed so you can safely strap it to the backseat and it will stay still.

The bed is made from a durable nano-nylon fabric that protects it from rips, tears, scratches, or even liquid. It will also keep your car safe from mud and damage. When you’re not in the car, the bed lays out flat to give a roomy comfortable base.

Available in midnight blue or coffee.

  • Foldable for easy carrying and transporting
  • Stable when built
  • Materials: Textilene mesh, Steel frame
  • Dimensions: 117 x 62 x 25 cm

6. Over The Top OTT Hideaway Dog Bed

Over The Top OTT Hideaway Dog Bed

Want something a bit more luxurious? While it may be retailing around double the cost of some of the others on our list, we still think this bed is well worth a spot on our list.

It is super high quality, and yet the hardwearing polyester cotton fabric is practical too. It is similar to a hooded bed, so your dog can get right in and snuggle down as they wish. When you’re done with your trip, you can simply throw the whole thing in the washing machine.

It’s deeply padded all around, so they won’t be able to feel the ground and it also will keep them really toasty. Available in different sizes, the medium is 79cm x 66cm overall, which gives an internal space of 71cm x 56cm.

  • Whole bed can be washed
  • Really padded for warmth and comfort
  • High quality materials will last a lifetime
  • Dimensions: M 79 x 66cm

7. Senzkon Foldable Waterproof Dog Bed Mattress

Senzkon Foldable Waterproof Dog Bed Mattress

This bed isn’t only our best budget pick, but also really easy to use as and when you need it. So, if your dog uses a crate when at home or simply sleeps next to your desk and you don’t want to have to move their normal bed, its placement is really flexible.

It’s available in five different colours, so if you have more than one dog they can each have their own. Water-resistant and durable, the 1200D oxford material is waterproof. It only needs a wipe to get rid of hair and mud, but can be washed by hand too.

There’s a dotted non-slip base, and it is lightweight to carry. Our main niggle is that it’s a bit bulky to carry, so maybe best for anyone with a car rather than on foot.

  • Waterproof material
  • Materials: Oxford material
  • Dimensions: 90 x 60 cm

8. Da Jia Inc Breathable Washable Pet Tent

Da Jia Inc Breathable Washable Pet Tent

When you are camping in Summer, it can get quite hot and stuffy in a tent – especially when you have furry four-legged friends in there, too. You may also want a day on the beach or in the park and want to take them with you.

This dog shelter will give them their own space during the day, and most importantly will shelter them from the blaring sun. Overheating for dogs is just as dangerous as it is for humans and they can’t self-regulate as easily, especially when you are all socialising and they just want to be involved. That’s why the breathable mesh windows are perfect for keeping your pets cool in the hot sun.

You can wipe it clean if it becomes dirty, and it will also protect from rain or wind if the great British weather takes a turn.

  • Mesh for fresh air
  • Durable material, waterproof and scratch resistance
  • Materials: Polyester and Oxford Cloth
  • Dimensions: M (50x50x45cm) L (60x60x55cm)

9. Henry Wag Alpine Travel Snuggle Bed

Henry Wag Alpine Travel Snuggle Bed

When protection from the hard ground is the most vital thing, this pad is ideal. It is compact, yet the foam insulation offers both heat and softness.

It has a waterproof base so is still great if the ground is a bit damp, or if it is just cold. The whole thing folds or rolls up into a small bundle to make it easier to carry in a rucksack, great if you are on-the-go.

It can also be used on the seats or in the boot of a car, or on a surface such as the sandy beach for offering some comfort.

  • Easy to carry
  • Well padded
  • Very lightweight
  • Materials: Brushed polyester
  • Dimensions: 86 x 70cm

10. Amazon Basics Cooling Elevated Pet Bed

Amazon Basics Cooling Elevated Pet Bed

Off camping when the weather is warm? You lucky thing.

Your dog will likely benefit from a raised, cool bed though. The hard floor won’t be very comfortable, and if you want to keep them off your own sleeping arrangements, they will need something of their own.

The benefits of a raised bed go way beyond being cooler than thick padded material. You can store things underneath, so it takes up less room – great if you’re in a compact tent. It all collapses really small, too. As long as you take an alan key with you, it is simple to build back up too.

A bit more faff than the others on our list, but if it will make things more comfortable it is worth it.

  • Cooling effect thanks to raised top
  • Easy to take down and up
  • Available in a great choice of sizes
  • Materials: Mesh
  • Dimensions: Medium 19.6 x 65 x 19.6 cm

Buying Guide

How we chose the best dog travel beds.

Your desired properties may depend on where you are going, your dog’s personality and how they like to sleep so it can be hard finding the right balance. But in general, we considered everything below.

It is good to try and find a balance between waterproof material and comfort. Whether the bed will be on the plain ground, or your dog will be muddy, they still need to sleep well. Many travel beds are made from some sort of nylon or polyester which gives a good balance. This is why a home dog bed won’t suffice, as they aren’t made for the great outdoors.

There are beds made from more plush fabrics or which are completely waterproof if necessary, though. All of those on our list are washable, either by hand or by washing machine. Perfect for when you get home and are already getting everything ready for the next trip.

There is no point in buying something which is small and space-saving during transportation if your dog can’t fit on it when going to sleep. Most of those on our list come in varying sizes so you can opt for the best.

If you do need a larger bed for your huge breed, look out for portability properties such as it being foldable/rollable or coming in a carry bag with handles. Some will roll into the size of a human sleeping bag so aren’t too bulky to carry.

But don’t get one that is too big, for your sake – when space is limited, you don’t want to be struggling. Something like a raised bed could work well here.

Most travel dog beds will either roll or fold up, with buckles or ties to keep it all together and handles for easier carrying. Think about just how you will be carrying it, though. If you’re just going from the car to a campsite or beach, carry handles are fine, but if you are off on a hike with a large rucksack, you may want something which can fasten to this like your human sleeping bag.

There are also different types of dog travel beds available. Do they want a sleeping bag? Just a foam mat? A very cushioned almost-good-enough-for-human-use bed? While they can’t answer your question, think about how they sleep at home. If they’re always under a blanket, a sleeping bag could be good. They will still be able to just sleep on top of it if it is warm.

If you will be staying in a car or have a long drive, dedicated dog travel beds are available. They can still be used in a tent or outside, but are usually more plush and able to safely secure to a car seat.

Other Buyers Ask...

What is a dog travel bed.

A travel dog bed is one specially designed for taking on trips and using outdoors. This means it needs to be easy to carry, relatively waterproof, warm (or cooling, depending on when in the year you use it) and still comfortable for your pet.

Many are flexible in terms of how they are used, so can be placed wherever you need it to be and in all weathers or temperatures.

They can often be used in car boots or dog crates too when you are getting from A to B. There are loads of different varieties, so the best for you may depend on your particular dog or situation. If you’ll be using the bed inside the car on a seat, there are dedicated models available too.

Does my dog really need a travel bed?

Wondering if your dog can go a few nights without a bed? It is a possibility, but we always recommend they have something of their own to sleep on at the very least.

The idea of a travel bed is that it is cushioned, easy to clean and easy to transport. They are more comfortable than just a blanket, and easier to carry too.

Having somewhere for your dog to sleep when they’re away from home is also important to make them feel comfortable. If they use it while at home, it will smell like home so can be comforting. It will also mean they don’t disturb you while you try to get some shut eye!

Gone are the days when a dog bed meant an old blanket or towel scrunched up on the kitchen floor. But, like humans with mattresses , which one will suit your four-legged friend will depend on how they like to sleep.

Some dogs like burrowing down into a bed, while others like to sprawl all over a bed, possibly hanging off the end as they get some rest.

It’s worth thinking about how and where your dog sleeps before you start perusing beds. Next, think about how much your dog’s bed will need to be washed. If your pup is mud-averse, it’s likely the bed won’t be in and out of the washing machine too much.

On the other hand, if you’ve got a pup that likes to roll in anything it can find or even one that can’t resist jumping in any body of water, you’ll need a dog bed that has covers that’ll unzip completely, enabling you to wash them frequently without shrinkage or misshaping.

From indoor to outdoor to portable options, we’ve rounded up the very best dog beds on offer.

How we tested the best dog beds.

While us humans checked the ethical and environmental credentials of the beds and washed the covers to test how easily they could be cleaned, it was our furry friends who had the hard job.

Our pack of testers were nothing if not rigorous – with a combined nap time of more than 1,000 hours, they put each bed on our list through its paces. Hucky, an 11-year-old black labrador, spent time resting his chin on edges; Bluebell, a six-year-old springer-labrador cross, sprawled out like a starfish; and Luna, an 11-month-old blonde labrador, tested the burrowing and manipulation properties of the beds. Keep reading to find out which ones got a firm paws up.

Ivy and Duke den bed

best dog beds

  • Best : Dog bed overall
  • Cover material : Upholstery grade fabric
  • Size options : S, M and L
  • How to wash : Unspecified
  • Designed with the natural movements of dogs in mind
  • Durable and soft
  • Great choice of colours

With its oval shape, the den bed has been designed to accommodate the natural behaviours of dogs who like to pad round in a circle before laying down. Our four-legged testers couldn’t wait to get into this bed, and it’s been one of the most popular.

The incredibly durable yet soft fabric unzips completely, which means you can wash the whole cover. The colourways are classy yet muted, so they don’t show the first mark of dirt or dust or mud, and it didn’t show dog hairs, despite three testers all having a night’s sleep in it. From lounging completely to resting their heads on the edge of the bed, there were so many ways and positions our canine testers liked to use this bed.

JackWick Designs pet perch

best dog beds

  • Best : Budget dog bed
  • Cover material : Fleece
  • Size options : One size (80cm x 60cm x 8cm)
  • How to wash : Machine washable
  • Great for keeping dogs comfortable while on the go

With four layers of thermal protection, the pet perch can be placed anywhere – from sandy beaches to pub floors. With a waterproof bottom layer, a quilted inner and a fleece wrap-around, the pet perch also rolls up and fastens with Velcro, meaning it can go into a handbag or a backpack as part of the day’s adventures.

Our furry testers tried it at a local pub and seemed to enjoy the familiar scent and warmth of a bed on which they’d already slept. Available in five different designs, this bed is a must for on-the-go dogs. You can also add a carabiner (£2.50, Jacwicksdesigns.co.uk ) to the bed, which means you can clip it onto your bag. Fully washable, it stays waterproof after washing, too.

Lords & Labradors calming anti-anxiety dog bed in faux wolf fur

best dog beds

  • Best : Dog bed for nervous dogs
  • Cover material : Faux wolf fur
  • Size options : One size
  • How to wash : Machine wash
  • Reversible cushion for a choice of materials
  • Machine washable

If the clever folk at Lords & Labradors made human-sized versions of this dog bed, we suspect they’d sell very well. This bed is entirely handmade and the fur walls and base gave our nervous tester a fully rested night’s sleep. The inner cushion is reversible, so your pooch can either rest on the faux wolf fur or opt for the velvet underside and just enjoy the faux fur on the walls. This is one of the softest beds we tested, and it looks beautiful, too. It’s got a non-slip base and, despite the faux fur looking like it should be hand-washed and brushed, it washed in the machine brilliantly, and came out looking as good as new.

Slumbering Hound deluxe dog snuggle sack

best dog beds

  • Best : Dog bed for travelling
  • Cover material : Velour fleece
  • Hidden seams
  • Sack design, rather than a typical dog bed

When the car is packed for a holiday, there’s not always room for a full-size dog bed – but that’s where the snuggle sack from Slumbering Hound can help. Essentially a huge, fur-lined, super cosy sack, this is perfect for taking away with you. If your dog bed traditionally stays in the kitchen or lounge, this is a great alternative for other rooms, too.

Our testers loved being able to manipulate it and burrow into it as well as having the sack pulled over them when they were snoozing, as it offers extra warmth and cosiness. All the seams are hidden, so they can’t be unpicked by chewers, and it washed brilliantly at 30C.

We Love Cushions Rover pets rock luxury dog bed

best dog beds

  • Best : Funky dog bed
  • Cover material : Waterproof sail fabric
  • Size options : M (70cm x 90cm), L (110cm x (100cm)
  • Makes for an adorable gift for dog owners
  • Great for big dogs
  • Design may not be to everyone’s taste

An entirely waterproof bed with an incredibly durable, removable cover made from sail fabric, this huge bed (110cm x 100cm) accommodated two of our testers at the same time, and reflated perfectly when they got off it. The inside has separate compartments to make sure the stuffing stays even, no matter where your dog lies.

As for the design, there are so many to choose from, including Audrey Hepburn’s Holly Golightly, and Frida Kahlo, but it’s Neil Armstrong’s hairdo photoshopped onto a Jack Russell that got our winning vote. The image quality is brilliant and, while our testers loved it, it also garnered envious comments from visitors. If you’re looking for a stylish bed that doesn’t sacrifice comfort, this is it.

Big Dog Bed incontinence bed for dogs

best dog beds

  • Best : Dog bed for incontinent dogs
  • Cover material : Waterproof and antibacterial fabric
  • Size options : M, L, XL and giant
  • How to wash : Machine washable at 90C
  • Pressure-relief cushion

This fantastic company supports the StreetVet charity and donates beds to them. It’s also one of the most environmentally friendly producers on the list, with its electricity coming from solar panels.

While not every dog will struggle with incontinence, there can be accidents due to old age or surgery, and this bed is perfect for those times. The waterproof and wipe-clean covers have thermally welded seams, so the beds are completely sealed. The cover fabric is also antibacterial and can handle medical-grade disinfectant.

The cushion inside the covers is a pressure-relief one, and has a high-density foam base. Currently only available in royal blue, each bed is made to order.

MiLounge human dog bed

 best dog beds

  • Best : Dog bed for sharing
  • Cover material : Oexo–Tex certified 100 per cent polyester faux fur
  • Size options : One size (175cm x 96cm x 37cm)
  • Great for cuddles
  • May not suit pet owners who are less mobile

If your pooch isn’t allowed on the sofa, this is the perfect human-sized dog bed that’ll let you get down on their level and share some puppy love. Available in beige, as well as dark and light grey, MiLounge’s human dog bed comes complete with a removable and machine-washable faux-fur cover; adjustable pillow bolsters that can be moved for maximum comfort; and handles for ease of transport. It is suitable for anyone up to 6ft 3in tall, which means it will fit every four-legged friend, from a chihuahua to a great dane.

It’s comfortable, feels very much like a cocoon and we managed a full-length movie in it, without anyone fidgeting.

The Red Dog Company oval bed

best dog beds

  • Best : Dog bed for cosying up in
  • Cover material : Wool
  • Orthopaedic mattress

While this one seemed on the smaller side for our large testers, once curled up and cosied in, they didn’t even open an eyelid when the postman knocked. The eco wool surround is made entirely of recycled yarn, and each bed is made entirely in Great Britain. The mattress is orthopaedic, made with memory foam, and designed in conjunction with a veterinary surgeon. Plus, the lowered edge over one side makes for easy access.

The side cushions are made from foam rather than a filling, which means they keep their structure even with a heavy labrador head sleeping on it for weeks of testing. Available with a fleece topper – again made from 100 per cent British wool – this bed is one of the most stylish and classy-looking in our list. It’s also completely machine washable.

Pets at Home cool club raised air dog bed with UV canopy

best dog beds

  • Best : Dog bed for the garden
  • Cover material : Wipe-clean cover with a mesh bed
  • Size options : One size (105cm x 76cm x 90cm)
  • How to wash : The cover is machine washable
  • Great for the summer
  • Could be a pain to store in the winter

If you’ve got a dog that likes baking in the summer sunshine, this is the bed you need. The fact it’s raised off the ground means there’s air circulation underneath, to keep even the warmest black-coated dog cool in the summer. Also, the UV canopy offers sun protection but is detachable for when the bed is in the shade. It collapses down and stores away easily, which means it can go into the garage or loft in the winter, or into the back of the car for a summer holiday.

All the covers are machine washable – although, it wipes clean really well because of the mesh panels – and its non-slip feet mean it’s as at home indoors as it is in the garden.

Charley Chau bliss bolster bed

best dog beds

  • Best : For dogs who feel the cold
  • Cover material : Faroe fabric
  • Size options : S,M and L
  • How to wash : Machine washable cover
  • Super comfy
  • Memory foam mattress

This is the only bed in our list that comes with extra cushions, should you require them, so it really can be personalised and made comfortable for every dog. Whether you have a pup who likes resting their head on the side, snuggling down, burrowing into the sides, or just flopping on top, this bed has been used in all sorts of ways by our testers.

The microbial memory foam mattress base is among the most comfortable in this list, and the four ethically sourced duck-feather filled bolster inserts can be manipulated however your pet likes, re-plumping perfectly between uses. Mini bolster pads can also be bought, and the fully removeable covers are all machine washable.

Slumberdown paws for slumber pet bed large

best dog beds

  • Best : Dog bed for lots of dogs
  • Cover material : 100 per cent polyester microfleece cover made from recycled materials
  • Size options : One size (120cm x 90cm x 20cm)
  • How to wash : Machine washable at 40C
  • Use of recycled materials
  • Kept its shape

Big, comfy and perfect for more than one dog at a time, this bed kept its shape and, thanks to the generously filled mattress, it plumped back up again when it wasn’t in use. Its simple, rectangular design might not have the cocooning effect of some other dog beds but our testers loved curling in the middle of it and dangling off the edge during warmer days or when the heating was on.

The anti-slip base means it stays put, and the entire zip-off cover makes for easy washing, coming out good as new at 30C. It’s also entirely manufactured in the UK, using recycled materials equivalent to 750 plastic bottles, so it makes a good choice if you’re worried about your dog’s carbon paw print.

Cornish Beds dog pet bed

Cornish Beds dog pet bed.jpg

  • Best : Luxury dog bed
  • Cover material : Wood and coconut fibre base
  • Size options : Victorian (33in x 34in x 19in x 24in), mini (30in x 32in x 20in x 27in)
  • How to wash : N/A
  • Customisable

By far the most expensive on our list, this dog bed is for the pup who has everything. The Cornish Bed company initially made the bed as a smaller version of their bed for humans, for trade show purposes, but started getting orders from people who wanted one for their pets. So, the team has diversified, using all their skills to make dog bed versions of their beds for humans.

Each one is made to order with a fully sustainable and organic mattress and customised finish in a choice of colours. The upholstered base is filled with natural coconut coir and organic lambswool, while the frame is hand fettled by artisan craftsmen, featuring authentic cast knuckle joints made using traditional methods at the foundry in Cornwall. The bespoke options also include a four-poster version. It’s worth noting the cushion is sold separately.

Silentnight orthopaedic pet bed

best dog beds

  • Best : Dog bed for older dogs
  • Cover material : Unspecified
  • Size options : S (65cm x 49cm x 17cm), M (80cm x 59cm x 18cm), L (95cm x 69cm x 19cm)
  • Orthopaedic foam matress
  • Not many colour options

This dog bed tested brilliantly, especially with our 11-year-old labrador. The orthopaedic foam mattress distributes weight very well, and the slightly raised edges mean pets can be cosied up against them or rest a chin on top of them.

It’s one of the more affordable designs that we’ve reviewed but beat some of its more expensive rivals when it came to where our testers chose to sleep. The non-slip base also means it stays put when paws are manipulating it or burrowing into it to find their comfy spot.

Designed For Dogs herringbone tweed mattress bed

best dog beds

  • Best : Dog bed for heavy dogs
  • Cover material : Wool-like tweed fabric
  • Size options : S (60cm x 50cm), M (80cm x 55cm), L (97cm x 70cm) and XL (117cm x 85cm)
  • How to wash : Machine washable at 30C
  • Nice and big
  • Memory foam keeps its shape

If you opt for the extra large (117cm x 85cm) version of this dog bed, make sure you have ample space for it, as the design is among the biggest in this round-up.

This deep-filled pillow cushion made from memory and orthopaedic foam crumb keeps its shape and kept our heaviest tester elevated – in fact, they barely made a dent in the dense and comfortable mattress, even after sleeping on it overnight.

Among those in our list, this is the only dog bed that can be personalised with your pet’s name (or multiple names, if it’s going to be shared).

The cover is removable and washable but you’ll need to line dry rather than tumble dry. The team at Designed For Dogs recommends fluffing up the mattress occasionally but, in three weeks of testing with plenty of use, ours maintained its shape without needing to be fluffed up.

The verdict: Dog beds

Spacious enough to fit three dogs, the Ivy and Duke Den bed easily took the top spot. On a purely aesthetic level, it looks beautiful, and comes in a range of fabrics, from muted pewter grey and duck-shell blue to heritage checkered patterns in rust, azure and heather.

Special mention must go to the Silentnight orthopaedic pet bed . It’s among the cheapest but proved hugely popular with our pets, and it washed brilliantly. If you have dogs who like the outdoors, the cool club raised air dog bed from Pets At Home is worth investing in too. The fact it’s cooling and wipes clean made it a favourite.

Best Portable Dog Beds for Travel: Sleeping On the Move!

portable-dog-beds

Most dogs love to accompany their owners on overnight trips (it’s much better than spending the night in a kennel), but you’ll need to keep your dog comfortable during your travels.

One of the best ways to do this is by bringing along a portable travel bed, on which your dog can snooze through the night.

There are a number of portable beds on the market that are great for exactly this kind of purpose, but some of the models are better than others. Below, we’ll explore some of the most important things to look for in a travel bed and recommend six great options for your next trip.

Continue reading for more in-depth reviews

Why Use a Travel Bed?

There are a variety of reasons to bring a portable bed with you while you are traveling, and there aren’t many drawbacks to doing so.

Some of the most important reasons to bring one along include the following:

Your dog may not be allowed to sleep on the furniture in your home away from home.

Travel beds can help anxious dogs feel a little more secure at night.

Travel beds not only give your dog a place to sleep, they give him a place to hang out.

Portable beds can often be used in conjunction with your dog’s crate.

Portable beds will help contain shed hair and keep your host’s home cleaner.

What Characteristics Should You Look for in a Portable Travel Bed?

Modern dog owners have a variety of portable travel beds from which they can choose, but some work better than others, and you’ll want to be sure to pick out one of the best possible models.

Just be sure to look for a portable bed that includes the following features and characteristics:

High-Quality Materials

Beds made with high-quality materials offer better comfort and durability than those produced by manufacturers who try to cut corners by using cheaper fabrics. It’s also important to scrutinize the materials used in the frames of elevated dog beds , as these are responsible for supporting your dog’s body weight.

Sufficient Loft

A well-cushioned bed will be more comfortable for your pup’s joints and help provide a better night’s sleep. Look for beds that are at least 1 inch thick, but thicker is always better. Loft isn’t applicable to most elevated beds, as they cushion your dog’s joints by keeping her entire body off the ground.

Easy-to-Clean Fabrics

You’ll need to wash your dog’s portable bed from time to time to remove the saliva, hair, and dirt it will collect. This is easiest to accomplish with a machine-washable bed, so they’re generally preferred to those that require hand washing.

Suitable Size

If your dog’s bed isn’t large enough, she probably won’t use it; and, if you pick a bed that is too large, you’ll just be making it harder to transport the bed.

There aren’t any hard-and-fast rules or guidelines for determining the perfect bed size for your dog, but you can usually get a good idea by simply measuring the space your dog takes up while she’s snoozing. Just be sure to add a bit to the length and width for a little wiggle room.

Water Resistant

Beds that absorb fluids – particularly urine – often develop pretty funky odors over time, and they are often more difficult to keep clean than those with water-resistant coatings or fabrics. If you are forced to choose a bed that doesn’t feature a water-resistant coating, consider applying a pet-safe water-repelling spray yourself.

Portability

Obviously, you’ll want a travel bed to be portable and easy to lug around – that’s pretty much the point. The best beds typically roll or fold up quite compactly and feature straps, buckles or clips to keep them secure. Elevated beds usually take up more space than conventional pet beds, but the ones detailed below are still pretty easy to stow in the car or a suitcase.

Best Portable Dog Travel Beds

The following six portable pet beds are great options for owners on the go, and most feature the characteristics you’d want for your dog. Just be sure to select one that is well-suited for your pooch’s specific needs.

1. Chuckit! Travel Dog Bed

Chuckit Travel Dog Bed (39'L x 30'W) Water Resistant, Blue

About : The Chuckit! Travel Dog Bed is an oval-shaped portable bed that rolls up and fits in the included stuff sack, making it easy to take with you on trips. The double-offset quilted design provides luxurious comfort and prevents the filling from clumping.

Price : $ Our Rating :

  • Machine washable fabrics make it easy to keep the bed clean (use a low-heat setting when drying)
  • Bed measures 30 inches by 39 inches
  • Polyester microfiber top and rip stop nylon bottom provide comfort and durability
  • Blue and gray color pattern

The majority of owners who tried the Chuckit! travel bed loved it. Dogs appear to appreciate the suede-like feel of the surface, while owners approved of the bed’s durability– several owners reported years of problem-free use. Additionally, many owners were happy to find that the bed took up very little space once it was inserted in the included stuff sack.

Aside from the complaints relating to dogs chewing up the bed, there were very few negative comments or reviews concerning the Chuckit! bed. However, a very small number of owners reported that their dog did not like the crinkling noise the nylon cover made, so it might not be ideal for super skittish dogs.

2. Carlson Pet Products Elevated Pet Bed

Carlson Pet Products Elevated Dog Bed, Indoor or Outdoor Dog Bed for Large Dogs, Green (8045)

About : The Carlson Pet Products Travel Bed is an elevated pet bed that provides your pet with a cool and comfortable place to sleep. Despite the robust and durable materials used in the construction of the bed, it folds up easily and weighs relatively little, making it great for taking with you on vacations.

Price : $$ Our Rating :

  • Designed for dogs weighing up to 95 pounds
  • Bed measures 46.5 inches long by 24 inches wide by 7 inches tall
  • Comes with a carrying case to protect the bed during transport
  • Can be used indoors or outdoors

Most owners who tried the Carlson Elevated Bed liked it, and most pets seemed to like it as well. The elevated design was especially appreciated by dogs with hip, joint or bone problems, and it helps to keep dogs cool during hot nights, making it very well-suited while camping or taking a trip to the beach.

Very few owners had anything negative to say about the Carlson Elevated Pet Bed. However, it may not be the ideal choice for those with strict space constraints, as it is a pretty large bed.

3. Kurgo Loft Wander Dog Bed

Kurgo Waterproof Dog Bed, Outdoor Bed for Dogs |Portable Bed Roll for Pets, Travel |Hiking, Camping, Wander Loft Dog Bed |Chili Red (Medium)

About : The Kurgo Loft Wander Dog Bed is a waterproof bed that rolls up quickly and easily, making it great for traveling with your pooch. The bed features a Microtomic rip stop top, waterproof Rufftex bottom and a polytech fill.

Price : $$$$ Our Rating :

  • Includes super-convenient carrying handle
  • Backed by a lifetime warranty against manufacturer defects
  • Available in two colors: brown and cherry red
  • Available in both medium (36 inches x 25 inches) and large (36 inches x 48 inches) – both are about 1.5 inches thick

The majority of owners who tried the Kurgo Loft Wander Bed were happy with their purchase. Many praised the rubberized bottom, which helped to keep the bed in place, while dogs seemed to love the comfort the bed provided. The handle was also a welcome addition, according to many owners who purchased the bed.

The only common problem most owners reported was the lack of sufficient padding, but this only seemed to be a problem for a small subset of dogs and their owners. A few owners also complained about the price of the bed (especially a portable bed only used occasionally when merited), but most still consider it to be a good value.

4. Ruff and Tuff Self-Inflating Travel Dog Bed

Lightspeed Outdoors Self Inflating Fleece Top Cover Travel Dog Bed | Kennel Bed ,32-Inch by 42 Inch

About : The Ruff and Tuff Self-Inflating Dog Bed is an inflatable, foam-core bed that is easy to use and provides your pooch with a comfortable place to rest or sleep. A perfect bed for traveling pet families, the Ruff and Tuff bed rolls up quickly and features two nylon buckle straps to keep it compact and tidy.

  • Bed measures 42 inches x 32 inches x 2 inches thick
  • Machine washable and comes with a one-year warranty
  • The bottom is water- and puncture-resistant, while the fleece top provides great comfort for your dog
  • Available in three colors: charcoal, tan and green

The Ruff and Tuff Travel Bed received glowing reviews from most owners who tried it. Most dogs appeared to find the bed extremely comfortable, while owners loved the ease with which the bed could be inflated or deflated. Additionally, several owners praised the bed’s construction and durability.

Complaints about the Ruff and Tuff Travel Bed were very rare, but a small number of owners found it too bulky when rolled up. It is also a little more expensive than most of the other options, but high-quality materials often increase the price of travel beds.

5. Kopeks Elevated Indoor-Outdoor Portable Bed

KOPEKS - Elevated Indoor Outdoor Portable Bed - Extra Large Size Blue Color

About : The Kopeks Elevated Bed is a mesh-topped portable bed, made with a steel frame and reinforced PVC connectors to provide the durability and rigidity you’d want in any pet bed. Although the Kopeks Portable Bed does not fold or collapse, it is easy to assemble and disassemble and requires no tools to do so.

  • Two supports are placed under the middle of the bed to provide plenty of support
  • Bed measures 48 inches long by 36 inches wide by 7 inches high
  • Mesh top and elevated design allow plenty of airflow to keep your canine cool and comfortable
  • Comes with a nylon carrying case

Most owners liked Kopeks Elevated Bed and found that it provided their pup with a comfortable place to sleep. Several owners also reported that the bed was very easy to put together and take apart, which makes it great for taking on adventures.

Unfortunately, the manufacturer does not provide a recommended weight range, and a few owners of medium to large dogs reported that the bed was not strong enough for their pup. This is disappointing, as the bed is certainly large enough for big dogs, and it is much larger than necessary for small pups.

Our Recommendation: The Chukit! Pet Travel Bed

While the Carlson Elevated Pet Bed is a good choice for owners seeking a bed that will keep their pooch up off the ground, the Chuckit! Bed is likely the best choice for most owners . Not only is the Canine Hardware Bed well-suited for travel, it is made from durable materials, provides a comfortable sleeping spot for

Not only is the Chuckit! bed well-suited for travel, it is made from durable materials, provides a comfortable sleeping spot for your pup, comes with its own stuff sack and received positive reviews by the vast majority of owners who tried it.

It is also quite affordable, which is always a nice bonus!

Our Verdict

How we picked.

Thule Allax dog crate

Dogs can sleep for 16 hours a day so their dog bed may well be the most important canine purchase you make. Each dog is as different as their owner, so we all approach this search with different requirements in mind.

Unfortunately it's not possible to "try before you buy" so we've compiled a series of features you should consider before making your purchase.

The bed needs to be slightly larger than your dog but also consider where you are planning to place the bed in your home. Don't buy a bed too big for your space.

If you looking for a bed for a large breed dog or two dogs that simply love to snuggle, take a look at our Buying Guide for Best Dog Beds for Large Dogs .

Sleeping Position

Have a look at what position your pooch sleeps in. Curled up in a ball suggests a circular nest bed whilst sprawled out may suit a larger mattress or pillow style bed.

If you've got an older dog who suffers from joint pain or arthritis, consider investing in a memory foam mattress or a specific orthopaedic bed for extra support and comfort.

Buying for the latest addition to your family ? It may be worth getting a cheaper bed until they're fully grown, then invest in something a bit grander. Or you could look at a dog crate and a crate bed . Most of the dog beds we feature here offer small and extra small bed sizes for puppies and small breeds.

If your dog is prone to chewing cushions and furniture, the bed you choose needs to be durable. Chew-proof beds are few and far between but we've featured some contenders. Of course, another option is to buy a cheaper bed knowing you'll be replacing it regularly so we also feature some cheaper options.

Clearly in most cases a removable and washable cover is a must to keep your dog bed looking and smelling fresh. Some smaller dog bed designs are completely machine washable, simply throw the whole bed in !

In some cases a waterproof bed may be beneficial for those oopsie moments! We've highlighted both features in our dog bed review.

1. Best Bed Overall

Omlet topology.

We've awarded the Topology dog bed by Omlet top spot in our review due to the extensive range of features and options available to customise the bed for your four-legged friend.

Omlet are a UK company renowned for specialising in high quality pet products with their truly original design features incorporated into everything they do.

Topology Bed by Omlet

The Topology bed can be completely customised to suit your dog so it's not really one dog bed but can become any dog bed you need.

Choose from a wide selection of toppers including sheepskin, microfibre, beanbag or bolster. Whether your dog prefers to curl up or stretch out, they have a bed topper style to suit.

The memory foam base really offers dogs of all ages a comfortable night's sleep but it's particularly good for older dogs suffering with arthritis and joint problems.

Washable Covers

Our one issue with dog beds in general is the smell. Inevitably, how ever hard you try to keep them clean, they all start to smell - well 'doggy'.

Omlet have put considerable thought into this issue. The covers on their bed are removable (unzip from the base) and machine washable. We've been using out Omlet dog bed for over a year and it still looks and smells fresh.

Our Verdict : The bottom line is that if you’re looking for a stylish and comfortable bed which will suit your four-legged friend and look amazing in your home, we would definitely recommend the taking a closer look at the Omlet dog bed range.

2. Best Memory Foam Bed

Baker & bray.

Baker & Bray's popular Eco Luxe Orthopaedic dog bed was recently chosen by the Telegraph as their top bed for 2024.

Baker & Bray luxury dog bed

Combining the popular nesting style with a touch of luxury and amazing eco-friendly credentials, this bed certainly delivers a high level of comfort and support.

The Scandi design incorporates a lower front edge which is ideal for small dogs or senior dogs making it easy to enter and leave the bed.

The fabric feels super-soft yet it's hard wearing and developed to avoid snagging. In testing our dog loved the wide, padded bolster walls and the orthopaedic central cushion. Baker and Bray's luxury memory foam provides just the right amount of cushioning for your dog's pressure points like shoulders and hips.

3. Best Budget Dog Bed

If you're looking for a soft, easy to keep clean, waterproof, orthopaedic, bolster bed in a range of sizes and colours that's also easy on the pocket then we've found one !

Bedsure Large Dog Sofa Bed

Bedsure offer a newly updated range of colours in the Dog Bed Sofa which we fully tested in 2023.

The first thing to mention is that this bed is low lying with a gap in the bolsters, so super easy to get in and out for both puppies and older dogs with mobility problems.

The raised bolsters act as a pillow for those weary heads but your dog can still keep a watchful eye on what's going on around them. Perfect for any dogs suffering from FOMO!

During testing, Freddie was a big fan of the supporting bolsters and the slightly enclosed space they provided. These pillow bolsters are surprisingly firm offering optimum support for your dog's neck and back.

The fabric has a velvety feel, surprisingly soft and luxurious offering a warm, plush space for your dog to simply conk out.

Bedsure Memory Foam

The base of the dog bed is constructed from a 6.4cm memory egg crate foam for orthopaedic support.

We loved that the foam is protected by a zipped waterproof liner to deal with any accidents and the covers are removable plus machine washable on the cold cycle. So you should be able to keep the soft bed clean and smelling fresh.

4. Best Calming Bed

Silentnight.

Like sleeping in a cloud! Extremely popular and great value dog beds, the calming nest works by providing your puppy or dog with a comfortable and enveloping space in which to rest.

Nest bed for dogs from Silentnight

The raised rim creates a sense of security and provides head and neck support, while the super-soft filling offers joint and muscle pain relief.

Puppies love these donut style beds with super soft material as it takes them back to a time when they snuggled up with their mum and littermates so creates a relaxed and safe environment for them.

It's also the perfect bed for dogs suffering from anxiety as the high pile creates a cosy and safe atmosphere.

There are so many brands of nesting beds on the market with many of them offering cheap fillings which won't retain their loft and covers which can't be machine washed. Don't waste your money on one of those. We recommend taking a look at the Pet Collection from Sleepy People.

Silentnight donut nesting dog bed

Their Donut dog bed is designed and manufactured by the UK's favourite and most trusted sleep brand Silentnight, a bed company with a wealth of experience.

Performance wise, this bed is filled with responsive fibres, meaning that it will keep its loft and bounce back into shape after each use. Let's face it, nobody wants a flat donut! In testing, we found that it kept it's loft really well with the odd shake it did indeed bounce back to it's original shape.

nesting bed in blush pink colour

Better still, you can simply toss the whole bed in the washing machine at 40° when the need strikes. We love that they've designed this bed to be incredibly easy to keep looking and smelling fresh.

Don't worry if you have hard floors. Silentnight have cleverly added a non-slip backing to all their dog beds to stop them moving skidding round your kitchen.

6. Best Orthopaedic Bed

Orthopaedic beds are designed to ensure older dogs (especially those suffering with arthritis or joint problems) get better, more restorative sleep by providing additional support and comfort.

testing the best Orthopaedic Dog Bed - VetRelieve

The VetRelieve Ortholuxe dog beds are designed by a vet and made right here in the UK to offer your dog the perfect place to rest their head.

The primary feature of an orthopaedic dog bed is it's use of specialised foam. This foam, moulds to the body in response to heat and pressure, evenly distributing body weight and reducing pressure on joints to provide better support.

Orthopaedic foam for dog bed

Crucially the VetRelieve Ortholuxe beds are designed with patent-pending orthopaedic foam technology which has passed robust pressure testing to ensure your dog gets the best night sleep.

But it doesn't stop there! As large breed dogs often suffer more from joint pains and stiffness, the VetRelieve bed range is available in some extremely large sizes (up to XXL) to cater for extra large breeds.

VetRelieve Ortholuxe extra large dog beds

Available in a mattress style or a bolster style with two raised edges, the low-line design makes it easier for older dogs with mobility issues to get on and off the bed. This 'walk on walk off' height can be especially helpful for dogs with arthritis or other conditions that affect their joints and muscles

We loved that the outer cover is fully removable and machine-washable for easy cleaning. Absolute lifesaver for those 'oopsie' moments. The design ingeniously includes a waterproof inner liner which protects the memory foam core. What more could you ask for?

Airmax dog bed from Sleepy People

The Airmax dog bed has a smart and durable quilted exterior coupled with a soft and cosy on-trend teddy fleece lining.

We love that the inner cushion has a reversible design with the choice of the soft and warm teddy fleece on one side or matching cooler wicking, quilted fabric on the other.

The extra padded inner cushion guarantees a comfortable spot to rest and the soft walls give the bed a nesting feel.

Better still, the edges of the inner cushion use Silentnight's Airmax sleep technology.

Silentnight dog bed

This mesh fabric allows air to travel through the cushion to prevent your dog overheating and to help keep your pet at a comfortable temperature.

It features a non-slip base and the whole bed is machine washable so super easy for us to keep it looking and smelling fresh.

Freddie adored this dog bed, and he's tested a lot of dog beds for us. He liked the soft slightly raised walls which offers that nesting quality so many dogs prefer.

We love the styling of this Silentnight bed, with the contrasting quilted and teddy fleece and finished with a signature Silentnight brand logo.

Ralph & Co. luxury dog bed in testing

Winners of the Independent's Best Large Dog Bed 2022 their beds are definitely worth a closer look.

Choose from a luxury nest or pillow style bed in a wide range of colours, fabrics and sizes. We put their popular Balmoral Nest Bed through its paces.

The first thing to say is that this dog bed oozes quality. From the reversible cushion to the gorgeous Italian leather label and clever carry handles, Ralph & Co. certainly have an eye for detail.

Essentially the bed consists of two parts, the surround and the cushion. We loved the reversible and washable inner cushion (for me it's often just the cushion part of the dog bed you need to freshen up).

Ralph & Co herringbone fabric dog bed

Our tester, a one year old Beagle called Bella, loved her new dog bed. It held it's shape well during testing and didn't flatten under her weight.

The nesting shape offered Bella comfort and security whilst being large enough for her to stretch out.

You can choose from the iconic Herringbone upholstery fabric on one side or sumptuous and soft faux on the other.

Plus it's packed with polyester fibre to ensure a comfortable sleep or a cozy nap. The surrounding walls feature both the sophisticated and durable Herringbone fabric and the new super soft and luxurious faux fur lining.

Designed to support, this style of bed is ideal for those dogs who love to simply curl up and rest their heads when they snooze.

Available in 2 colour ways - Balmoral (Charcoal Grey) and Lincoln (Light Brown). Or, if you prefer it's available in chenille or stonewashed fabrics in a range of colours including green & blue to suit your home decor.

9. Best Elevated Dog Beds

Ever considered an elevated dog bed ?

Offering a whole range of benefits for dogs including improved comfort and reduced joint pain, an elevated dog bed may be a good option for you.

Veehoo elevated dog bed collection

Veehoo offer a selection of patented elevated beds which we put through their paces.

Raised off the floor on cute paw shaped feet, each bed is perfect for keeping your dog away from draughts and cold floors.

The design incorporates a breathable mesh base which not only enables heat to escape from under your dogs body easily, but also encourages the circulation of fresh air reducing damp air and those inevitable dog smells!

Ultimately, they help to keep your dog cool in summer and warm in winter. Win-Win !

We love that the mesh fabric is heat resistant so makes the perfect bed for outdoors on those warm summer days and because they are incredibly lightweight they are portable.

Dog testing the aluminium raised dog bed

Veehoo offer a stack of different options so you can select the right elevated bed for your dog.

Magic is a beautiful 13yr old Westie/Jack Russell who helped us review the Veehoo bed range. Although a bit too large for him, he loved the bed especially with his favourite blanket.

With a range of mesh colours and frame colours so you can coordinate the bed with your home decor.

If you've got a dog that loves to chew their bed, take a closer look at Veehoo's newer All-Enclosed Aluminium bed. The metal frame encloses the fabric mesh completely - so there are no edges available for your dog to chew.

Our gorgeous Labradoodle tester - Mitch is only 9 months and needed a little encouragement to use his new elevated bed, so they placed his mattress bed on the top.

Dog testing a chew-proof dog bed

Mitch lives in an old farmhouse in Suffolk, which is quite draughty and has lots of cold, tiled floors so the raised design worked perfectly.

With his thick labradoodle coat, they're looking forward to using the bed in the garden this summer, so that the breeze can blow around him and hopefully he will lay on top without the cushion so this will keep him extra cool.

The extra-large Classic style bed also boasts an additional central joist so can support dogs weighing up to 68kg !

Our one bit of advice would be to make sure you have a friend to help you assemble the bed. After assembling 4 Veehoo dog beds, we can confirm that it is definitely a two-person job.

We tested the great value Bedsure Washable Orthopaedic bed in large. As you can see it was certainly big enough for our Cockapoo Freddie and would be a good size for two dogs to share or one much larger dog - they also offer a medium and an extra large size.

What's more the thick mattress won’t flatten with use, keeping your dog fully supported.

Bedsure mattress style dog bed

The impressive, egg crate foam mattress (also featured in the Bedsure Dog Sofa Bed) is designed to be more shock absorbent and softer than a single block of foam. So it's ideal for older dogs with joint issues.

It also has the additional benefit of improving air circulation which will help keep your four-legged friend cool while they lounge around in the heat.

For extra cosiness, the top is made from a plush sherpa fabric and the whole cover is removable and machine washable. If you're not keen on grey it's also available with a white plush topper or a very smart navy.

Our Verdict :- A great value, mattress style dog bed for those dogs that prefer to sleep stretched out.

Specification : Sizes ( LxWxD) : M 76 x 51 x 7.6cm, L 91 x 69 x 7.6cm, XL 112 x 81 x 7.6cm, XXL 137 x 111 x 10cm | Colours: Navy, white & grey | Cleaning : Machine-washable

+ Great for dogs that stretch out

+ Supportive foam base

+ Cool in the summer

If you have the cash to splash on a fantastic dog bed, we'd recommend three -

We recommend the Topology dog bed by Omlet because of their customisation options, you can almost create any bed to suit your dog and your home. The covers are easily removed and machine washed. So big ticks all round !

The Baker & Bray Eco Luxe Orthopaedic dog bed was awarded Best Dog Bed by the Telegraph and we think it's one of the best dog beds we've ever tested. Built to provide an amazing level of comfort and support with a big dollop of luxury thrown in and those outstanding eco credentials.

We also highly recommend the VetRelieve range of orthopaedic beds for older dogs and those suffering with joint issues. They may be on the pricey side, but you are paying for excellent quality. You just need to decide whether your dog would prefer a mattress or bolster edged bed.

If your buget is a bit smaller -

The Bedsure and Silentnight bed ranges offer a comfortable and great value option. Both washable and quality tested they will offer a long lasting bed.

As I'm sure you're aware you will find hundreds of styles of dog beds, and searching through them is a tough task since choosing the best is dependent on your dog and their needs and preferences.

To help make the choice easier, we began our research by splitting the different styles of beds into categories based on how dogs like to sleep.

Our research across large and small businesses helped us narrow the choices down to those suited to 'sprawlers', 'ballers' and 'loungers'.

We considered some premium models compared alongside more budget-friendly options to suit everyone's budget.

We then read through owner reviews of dog beds across product listings to get a sense of what was worth considering.

You know your dog best, so whether you need a cave-like bed to create a cosy feel with a sense of security or something big and comfortable for an older dog to spread out on, hopefully there's some stylish dog bed ideas in our review for you.

Buyer’s Guide: Choosing the Best Travel Dog Beds

Navigating the world of travel dog beds can be a challenge, especially with so many factors to consider. This guide aims to simplify the process, helping you make an informed choice that aligns with both your needs and those of your canine companion.

One of the first things to look at when choosing a travel dog bed is its size. It’s essential to select a bed that fits your dog comfortably . Measure your dog while they’re lying down in their natural sleeping position. Then, add a few inches to these measurements to ensure the bed provides enough space for your pet to stretch out and switch positions.

The material of the dog bed plays a crucial role in its longevity and your pet’s comfort. Opt for durable yet comfortable materials that can withstand the wear and tear of travel. Some common materials used in travel dog beds include heavy-duty polyester and nylon, known for their durability and resistance to damage.

Portability

When it comes to travel dog beds, portability is key. Look for options that are foldable or come with a carry bag for easy transportation. The lighter and more compact the bed, the easier it will be to carry around during your travels.

Washability

Consider whether the travel dog bed is washable. Being able to clean the bed easily is a significant advantage, especially after a long trip. It helps maintain hygiene and provides a clean and comfortable space for your pet to rest.

Safety is also an important factor when selecting a travel dog bed. Look for beds with non-skid bottoms that will prevent them from slipping or sliding around while in transit. Additionally, many pet owners opt for beds with raised edges as this helps keep your pup warm and comfortable during chilly nights. Keep in mind that durable fabrics are also ideal as they provide. If you’re going to be traveling in the car with your pet, you may want something with seat belt loops to attach the bed to the car, as well as a harness clip to keep your dog safe on car rides.

An often-overlooked feature, insulation is crucial when choosing a travel dog bed. Make sure to select a bed that can retain heat, especially if you’re planning trips during colder seasons. Some beds come with thermal padding or a reflective feature that utilizes your pet’s own body heat to keep them warm.

Thermal Padding

Thermal padding is a common insulation method. This material heats up in response to your pet’s body temperature, providing a comfortable and warm surface for them to rest on.

Reflective Features

Some dog beds come with reflective materials that return your pet’s body heat back to them. This is an efficient way to keep your pet warm without the need for electricity or batteries.

While functionality is paramount, the design of the travel dog bed is also important. The bed should not only suit your pet’s needs but also blend in with your style and the interior design of your vehicle or travel accommodation.

Style and Color

Dog beds come in an assortment of styles and colors. Thus, you can select one that matches your aesthetic preferences and your pet’s personality.

Fit with Travel Accommodation

Consider the size and shape of your vehicle or travel accommodation. The bed should fit well within the available space while offering enough room for your pet.

Finally, consider the price of the travel dog bed. It’s important to invest in a quality product that will last for numerous trips, but that doesn’t mean you need to break the bank. There are plenty of affordable options that offer comfort and durability.

A travel dog bed should be able to stand up to wear and tear from frequent trips. Invest in a high-quality product with a durable construction and make sure to check the warranty information before you buy.

Quality vs Cost

While higher-priced beds often offer superior quality, there are many budget-friendly options that don’t compromise on comfort and durability. Conduct thorough research and read reviews before making a decision.

Most importantly, ensure that the bed you purchase is suitable for your pet’s size and weight. After all, a comfortable travel experience for your furry companion will make your travels easier and more enjoyable for everyone.

Travel dog beds are an essential accessory for pet owners on the move. Bearing in mind the varying needs of different pet owners, we’ve provided reviews for some key options you might consider. As more of us plan staycations and weekend trips away with our beloved pets to pet-friendly hotels , we’ve got to make sure our cars are set up for not only their safety but their comfort too, and that includes a travel dog bed.

They’ve already got a trusty bed at home but depending on how big it is or whether it’s fixed in place, it’s unlikely you’ll want to keep swapping it from the boot of your car and back again.

When you consider the way you’re going to transport your pooch in your vehicle, if that’s using a travel dog crate , a safety harness that buckles in, or a dog guard you’re going to need to add in some cushioning like a dog car bed, travel mat for dogs, or even a portable dog bed that doubles up as a bed for your vacation abode.

Can a dog travel in the car?

The short answer is yes, dogs can travel in the car. But, did you know it's a legal requirement to make sure your dog is restrained when they’re in the car? This is so they can't distract you while you're driving or injure you, or themselves, if you happen to stop quickly.

There are lots of pet safety travel products you can use, such as seat belt harnesses and specially-designed leads that can be attached to headrests, dog guards, dog car seats, a dog car crate, or a dog cage for car travel.

When it comes to travel beds for dogs, it’s not such a straightforward decision, so we’ve taken into account the size of different breeds when it comes to choosing between a dog bed, a dog car seat, a dog travel mat, and car boot liners.

Below, we’ve selected options for your car and your dog that will make sure everyone is a happy traveller.

The best travel dog beds

The easiest option and for most with a reasonably sized car is to choose a travel dog bed that will fit in the back of your boot.

You'll want to make sure your dog has enough room to get comfy, especially if it's a long journey and if the weather doesn't plan on being so great a waterproof option will always be a safe bet.

1. Where's Winnie Luxury Dog Car Seat

www.whereswinnie.co.uk

Description

Suitable for toy to medium-sized dogs up to 10kg, this stylish dog car seat cleverly clips into the ISOFIX points in your car as well as offering a back strap option. Your dog is then clipped into the seat with the included shock-absorbing safety leash. It's available in five gorgeous colours and can be used as a normal dog bed when you reach your holiday destination.

Specifications

Shock-absorbing safety leash is included with every car seat

55cm (W) x 55cm (D) x 30cm (H)

Main fabric: 92% polyester and 8% nylon.

Base fabric: 100% polyester

Inner cushion pads: 100% recycled polyester (made from recycled plastic bottles)

Removable and washable cover

Reviewed by Digital Writer Emily Gilbert: "While I was initially a little sceptical about the price of this dog bed, I quickly changed my mind. Not only is it visually really attractive but it's incredibly well made with a super-soft corduroy fabric that was easy to brush off dog hair. Being a dachshund, my dog can quite often get a muddy belly on our walks so being able to wash the cover is a huge help. I also love that the bed is made up of recycled plastic bottles, making it a really great eco-friendly option.

My dog Luna instantly took to the plush bed when we took it out of the packaging and happily curled up in it within minutes, meaning it'll be able to double up as a travel bed when we go on holiday too. She was also very chuffed with the accompanying treat that the Where's Winnie team provided with the delivery. My favourite part - and the real USP - of the Where's Winnie car seat is that it clips into the ISOFIX points of our car. Along with the back strap, I feel much better knowing our precious pooch is as safe as she possibly can be. I also like that the plump cushions raise her higher so she can see out the window and the anti-slip base really helps to prevent the car seat from moving around which has previously been the case with other seats we've used. Overall, I'm so chuffed with our Where's Winnie car seat and I haven't stopped recommending it to other dog owners!"

2. Chuckit! Travel Bed

Rrp: £ 30.29

Perhaps one of the most popular portable beds out there, the Chuckit! Travel bed is perfect for literally throwing in your boot when you're bringing your pooch on the journey. It comes highly rated due to its durable nylon ripstop design, but doesn't lack comfort for your dog as it features a plush quilted top. It is fairly large so more than enough space for larger breeds but rolls up and fits in a travel bag for compact storage.

Quilted bed with double sided offset quilted design

Poly suede upper material for comfort with nylon ripstop base for durability

Machine washable

Supplied with a portable stuff sack

Suits small to large breeds

Size: 99.1 x 76.2 x 7.6 cm

Review : "I would say this sleeping mat would suit up to a medium-sized bread dog, such as a Border Collie or a rather large Shetland Sheepdog, in particular, if they stretch out when sleeping. This bed is very compact for its size and plushness. You will need to shake and fluff it once you’ve taken it out, just like you would do with a sleeping mat.

"My dog likes it when I was on holiday with her and she has slept and rested on it. It’s great when paired with a blanket when it gets cold or used as a pillow. The bottom is very easy to wipe clean if it’s dirty. It comes with a bag which is a huge plus as you can nearly store it away when travelling. It packs a little bit than a sleeping bag so do keep that in mind. The bag is also large enough to comfortably slip the sleeping mat inside it."

3. Floral Travel Pet Bed

www.joules.com

Just because it's for the boot of your car doesn't mean a travel dog bed doesn't have to look good. This pretty Joules floral design is ideal if you also need it to double up as a portable bed for when you reach your destination. It features a quilted design covered in fleece on one side for added comfort and a hardwearing canvas on the other side, it also has carry handles so you can roll it up and transport it easily.

Suitable for all breeds

Size: 91cm x 68cm

Review : "This dog bed is perfect for travel, beautiful in design and plush and soft. It can be folded for puppies and spread out on car seats. I love it!"

4. RAC Advanced Boot Bed with Bumper Protector

www.argos.co.uk

Back to basics with this travel bed for your car, it's designed with padding so it's comfortable for your dog but also with an extra flap that folds down to protect your car from your dog's claws as they jump in and out of the boot. It's also water-resistant and leakproof, so if it's been a rainy day at least your boot won't get soaked. Some reviews have reported the flap isn't the same wipe clean material as the whole bed.

Boot protector (reports not wipe clen)

Suitable for small to medium size breeds

Manufacturer's one year guarantee

Size: H10 x W75 x D85cm

Review : "Really pleased with this item, doesn’t quite cover the whole boot but is a nice comfy, waterproof liner for the dog (I have a large lab)."

5. Ismael Dog Oval Waterproof Softee Bed

www.wayfair.co.uk

This bed is sturdy enough that it won't get ruined after a few muddy walks and most importantly, is waterproof. The cushioned oval design means it will fit in most boots without any trouble, and it's easy to remove for your dog to relax in if you're on holiday somewhere away from home. It's covered in a heavy-duty hard-wearing 100 per cent polyester waterproof material treated with a water repellant coating which is easy to keep clean.

Size: M 61cm W x 51c m D x 22cm H/ L 76cm W x 64cm D x 24cm H / Jumbo 97cm W x 74cm D x 25cm H

Review : "This is the best dog bed we have had in over 40 years of having dogs in the family. We already had one of these beds bought three years ago from another supplier (much dearer than Wayfair!!) so knew what to expect when we decided to throw away an inferior bed and instead have two of these - one for each dog. Whilst our standard poodles now have one each they can both easily sleep in one bed if they so wish. The beds are really easy to keep clean, look good and, judging from the amount of time our dogs stay in them, are very comfortable."

The best dog bed car seat

A dog car seat is not for every breed, you'll perhaps find this option is better suited to smaller breeds who will be able to fit in a smaller space.

There's also a simple seat cover option, so instead of installing an actual booster seat for your dog, you can get a hammock cover that will protect your car.

6. Kurgo Heather Dog Booster Seat

www.monsterpetsupplies.co.uk

A great dog car seat for your pooch if they like to look out of the window during long car journeys. They can see the world go by thanks to the Kurgo booster seat, which attaches to your existing seatbelt and fastens to a dog harness to keep them secure while you're driving. It's waterproof and also fleece-lined so still comfortable for your dog to sit in.

Holds up to 30lb dog

Easy and quick install

Metal supports for structural integrity

Collapsible for easy storage

Adjustable seat belt tether easily attaches to all dog harnesses

Waterproof exterior

Machine washable liner with reversible pad to keep the seat clean

Size: H42.55 x W7.3 x D37.15cm

Review : "This is an ideal small dog seat, fits easily to seat and seat belt is secure. We have a cockapoo which is 16 weeks old, I can’t see her fitting into after maybe 20 weeks, so I again stress long term this is only for a small dog."

7. Personalised Dog Car Booster Seat

www.etsy.com

If you've got a nice car and you're worried about the interior but want something a little more luxurious for your dog to ride in, we suggest this handmade personalised dog bed car seat. It attaches to the headrest of the car seat and has foam-cushioned sides that provide a sturdy base for your pet. The lair is made of high-quality, waterproof material that is easy to keep clean and is equipped with an adjustable seat belt that will secure your dog and limit its movement around the car while driving.

Waterproof fabric

Removable cover

Includes adjustable seat belt

UV protection against fabric fading

Size: Internal 40 cm x 45 cm x 15 cm / External: 50 cm x 55 cm

8. Kurgo Dog Hammock for Back Seat of Car

Rrp: £ 16.99

Another Kurgo product that comes highly recommended is this dog hammock, which covers the back seat of your car. If you're not looking to get an individual dog booster seat, a dog seat cover will protect your seats and prevent hair from getting everywhere. It's also waterproof and made from durable ripstop fabric and has zippered openings for access to seatbelts. It slips over your car seats and has blocked access to the front seats so your dog won't distract you as much while driving.

Durable water and stain-resistant

Nylon ripstop material

Zippered openings for seat belts

Machine wash cold on gentle cycle

Size: W140 x L142 cm

Review : "I love this product! Having just bought a new SUV, I really wanted to protect my seats from my super shedding pugs and their nails. This is the easiest thing to install, it looks great when it's up, the dogs seem comfortable in it. I like the built-in zipper for the harness restraints."

Or, there are mats which fit inside a dog crate or cage to make it more comfortable.

10. Petface Outdoor Paws Travel Mat

This is a truly portable option for your dog. The quilted water-resistant mat rolls up so you can easily store it in your boot, or just by the back door of your home. It also includes its own little carry case so if it gets too muddy, you can take it inside without creating too much mess.

11. House Of Paws Navy Water Resistant Crate Mat

However, you can definitely use the mat on its own to pad out your boot as it has plenty of cushioning for your dog for the car journey. It's also durable enough to be used outside.

13. All For Paws Chill Out Fresh Breeze Mat

www.viovet.co.uk

The warmer it gets outside, the hotter it gets in the boot of your car, so when you're on a long journey or haven't left the car parked in the shade this chill-out mat will be perfect to keep your pooch cool in the warmer months. It's a springy plastic noodle mattress that allows air to flow through making it both comfortable and refreshing to lie on.

Removable zip fastened cover which is machine washable in cold water

Size: Medium L 75 x W 50 x H 6 / Small L 36 x W 50 x H 6cm

How to secure your dog in your car

If you want to put your dog crate in your boot, remove the parcel shelf and measure the interior of your car boot. Compare these to the dimensions of the crate you select. Make sure the crate is as snug as possible, the less it can move the safer it will be.

Smaller crates for small dogs can go in the back seat footwell – but again, check the measurements to be sure that it will fit snugly.

If you want to put your dog on the back seat rather than on the floor, don’t use a seatbelt to secure the crate unless the manufacturer specifically says their crate is safe for this - some are not and you could be putting your dog at risk. A safer option is to use a pet hammock and place the crate inside. This way, they won't be thrown forward into the front of the car if you brake suddenly.

The Best Portable Dog Beds For Traveling Anywhere With Your Pup

They make packing so much easier ✨.

Published on 12/21/2021 at 3:01 PM

dog travel beds

Most dogs like to lounge — a lot. And that doesn’t stop when you take them traveling.

But since your dog’s normal bed isn’t exactly built for stuffing in a suitcase, you might be looking for something that’s a little more travel-friendly.

Luckily, there are a ton of travel dog beds on the market that are lightweight, waterproof, durable, compact and comfortable — making them the perfect spots for your pup to curl up while you’re out on the road. (Or even for hanging out in the yard!)

The Dodo rounded up the best travel dog beds on the internet so you can find the best one for your next trip with your pup.

  • Best travel dog bed overall: Chuckit! Travel Dog Bed
  • Best dog travel mat : TOYSBOOM Outdoor Dog Mat
  • Best folding dog bed : STOBOK Outdoor Dog Bed
  • Best dog sleeping bag : CHEERHUNTING Dog Sleeping Bag
  • Best dog travel bed for the car : Aidou Dog Car Seat
  • Best memory foam travel dog bed : Petmaker Travel Dog Bed
  • Best elevated travel dog bed : YEP HHO Large Elevated Folding Pet Bed

Why use a travel dog bed?

Travel dog beds are super handy since you can use them pretty much anytime you leave your house. They’re perfect for hanging out in the yard, taking your dog for a car ride, staying at a hotel, going camping or taking a hike.

They also make you a super polite houseguest since they can help keep your pet’s hairs contained to his bed.

In general, travel dog beds tend to be water resistant, portable and easy to clean, which makes them truly ideal for the outdoors and while traveling.

And the best part is that your dog’s normal bed can stay nice and clean at home, and your dog can still get super comfy when you’re out and about.

How to find the best travel dog bed

Since there are so many travel dog beds to choose from, you should try to tell the difference between a high-quality travel dog bed and one that’s not so great so you can find the best one for your pup.

When looking for a portable dog bed for traveling, be sure to consider the following details:

First and foremost, you want your travel dog bed to be pretty easy to carry around. Even if you think you’ll be keeping the dog bed in one spot, there’s a good chance you’ll end up wanting to bring it everywhere you take your dog.

Luckily, most travel dog beds are super portable (of course — it’s in the name!). They’re usually flat and can be either folded or rolled up into a more compact form. Some even come with a carrying case so you can tote your pup’s bed around, no problem.

Easy to clean

A travel dog bed that’s easy to clean will save you lots of time and hassle, especially if you plan on bringing it outdoors, like while camping or hiking.

Even if you only bring the travel dog bed in the car or a few hotel rooms, it’s nice to know you can give the dog bed a quick wash in case of any accidental messes (and keep it clean in between trips).

So when looking for a travel dog bed, make sure that it’s machine washable.

Purchasing a bed that’s waterproof (or at least water resistant) will definitely be a lifesaver when you’re on the road. So just in case there are any accidental spills, your pup’s bed will still be usable afterwards, and he won’t be stuck with a wet bed.

It’s especially important to purchase a waterproof bed if you plan on taking it camping with you. It could easily start raining, or the ground could be moist, which could definitely lead to an uncomfortably wet sleeping situation for your pup.

A travel bed with a nice layer of soft padding will go a long way when it comes to a good night’s rest for your pup. Since travel beds are meant to be compact, they’re not always comfy, so make sure the one you purchase will actually provide your dog with a pleasant place to sleep.

And if your dog is older, you might want to try an orthopedic travel dog bed (aka one made of memory foam), which can help give your dog’s joints support so he doesn’t suffer from aches and pains while on the road.

Fits the situation

Before deciding on a travel dog bed to buy, think about how you plan on using it first. This will help you find one that will actually meet your needs.

If you want to keep it in the car only, for example, consider getting your dog a booster car seat, which is basically like a travel dog bed but a lot safer for traveling in the car.

And if you plan on taking the dog bed on a camping trip, look for one that can roll up really small, comes with a carrying case, is lightweight, is totally waterproof and will keep your pup warm on cold nights. This will make it a lot easier to pack light for your outdoor adventure and ensure your pup stays comfortable and happy.

If you have a small pup, this dog booster seat is a great option. It’s basically like a poofy dog bed you can strap to your car seat. It’s extremely comfortable, safe and adorable, so it’s basically the perfect travel dog bed that you can always keep in your car.

One side of the bed is covered in faux fur, so your pet can get extra snuggly and stay warm on cold surfaces. And even though this dog bed isn’t machine washable, it’s super portable since it can be rolled easily and even comes with handles attached to the bed.

elevated travel dog bed

Bed size: 42 by 24 inches

Bed weight: 14 pounds

Elevated dog beds can help keep your pup cool and prevent him from getting any dirt, dust or other debris from the floor on his fur. This can be especially useful if you have to sleep on the ground while camping or if you plan on keeping the bed somewhere that gets pretty hot. This elevated dog bed can collapse inwards (similar to a fabric folding chair for humans) and comes with a carrying case for easy storage.

Dogs spend between 16 and 20 hours a day dozing and resting. It is important that they lay neither too smooth nor too hard. Do not ever should your four-legged friend constantly lie around on the cold floor. With a superior quality dog bed , this individual relaxes his important joints and muscles and comes to sleep. To ensure that he can snuggle up properly and still have sufficient space, there is a tiny rule of thumb for choosing a size:

– First measure the height at the withers and the length of your dog from the tip of the nose to the bottom of the end.

– Small canines up to a withers height of 40 – forty-five cm need an additional 10 centimeter in width and length.

– Medium-sized dogs up to a withers elevation of approx. sixty – 65 cm need an additional 20 cm of space in the dog bed.

– Large dogs need beds that are about 30 cm longer than their rough body dimensions. Orthopaedic canine beds with a memory foam base are also advised for large bread of dogs.

Nest builder/sleeper

Most dogs, like their wilder forefathers, sleep in small burrows and curl up to save warmth and energy. In case your dog is far more of a curled-up sleeper, he will feel most comfortable in a rounded or oval dog your bed. The sides should be cosy and never too high so that he can rest his mind between.

Floor individual

Many large dog breeds are typical floor sleepers and lie down on their sides to rest. They usually stretch out all fours when cash. A rectangular model with a high border prevents the ribs and back from cooling down and safeguards the bones.

Stretched-out sleepers

When it can hot or their back hurts, some dogs prefer to sleep in the vulnerable or supine position. Here, too, a rectangular form highly recommended for the dog bed. If the sides are secure, your pet can get into a comfortable position by stepping lightly.

A classic dog bed contains a scratch-resistant cover with a soft filling up – strictly speaking, these are simple cushions. In most cases, these are strengthened with a more or less stable side edge. Typically the side edges offer protection from the cold and secure the back. Your own dog can feel safe and secure.

Whenever it comes to designing canine beds, there are no limitations for designers. Several buyers want their dogs to have as luxurious a bed as themselves (or even better) and like “humanised” couch and bed designs. Ultimately, the pets don’t really treatment how a item is designed externally. Thus whether you may spend £20 or 2000 pounds on such a comfortable equipment depends more on your own specifications than on those of your dog. Practically every style of furnishing can be found on the internet in the form of a sofa for pets: After some patience, you can find your favourite developer sofa in small and let the dog bed mix in with the furnishings.

– Packed with cotton made of woll, synthetic fibres or foam. – Orthopaedic cushions are made of polyurethane foam (adapts to the form of the body). – External covers made of cotton, fur, fleece jacket or water-repellent materials.

– Material: Same as the pillow filling or foam. – Also with firm core or outer edge. – Scratch-resistant cover on the outside (nylon, durable cotton material, leather, etc . ), inside also wool or fur.

There is apparently an unmanageable quantity of models. If you are buying special condition or a bed with certain features, execute a quick search on popular search engines and order your artist dog bed immediately from the manufacturer or from an online mail-order company. If you need to be inspired at the mechanic or don’t care much about the look, you’ll probably have luck in a toy or family pet supply shop. Well-stocked pet shops and even DIY stores will often have various models in stock.

– The cushioning should be neither too soft nor way too hard. Small and light dogs usually prefer softer pillows than large and heavy animals. – Orthopaedic canine beds consist of a foam or memory froth layer on top of which is the actual cushion. – If the dog bed is situated on the couch as a hair protector, a light material is sufficient as a base.

– The cushioning should be easy to wash and the seams should be able to withstand hot cleansing machine cycles. – Removable covers make washing easier and can be easily replaced (no bed failure during washing).

– The particular material should be breathable (textiles) and not overheat even though lying on the bed for years (leather, man made fibres, puffy filling). – Covers and fillings should dry out quickly.

Sustainability

– Fur covers are also made of faux fur (longer durability). – As opposed to real leather, many designers use counterfeit leather (easy to clean). – For products with down filling, make positive that the down was obtained without the live plucking practice.

– Your dog should be able to enter and out there comfortably (without jumping). – If this individual is a anstoß, choose a your bed without plastic stuffing (swallowing of filling up material possible). – The bed should be non-slip.

– Allow your dog some flexibility of movement when sleep (see table above). – Choose a form that suits your dog’s resting style. – Stressed dogs prefer bedrooms with high edges.

Without question, every dog needs a everlasting place of escape where it can completely rest and slumber away into deeper stages of sleep. A chilly tile or parquet floor is completely unacceptable for this. Carpeted floors also don’t provide the necessary comfort and will wear on your bone fragments in the long run. In case you have a lap dog that can sleep on your belly, on the sofa or in bed whenever you want, a dog bed is not absolutely necessary. Yet , even lap dogs need time out from time to time and would like to retreat alone – so just a little bed of their own in a quiet and draught-free place in the home can’t hurt regardless.

In the daily rounds, your puppy collects a lot of impressions – and a lot of dirt. Parasites are also more likely to be accidentally introduced in spring and summer season. All small , big sins accumulate in the dog’s bed: Dirt and faeces particles, body fluids, food remains and hair quickly create bad odours. An individual can either put the washable dog cushion completely in the washing machine or take away the cover.

– In the event the foam key is actually big for the washing machine, use an antibacterial textile spray and place the material in the sun to be dried.

– If you find lice, fleas or other six-legged parasites in the pillow, freeze it in the refrigerator for several days and nights before washing. By doing this you can reliably kill the creatures and eggs and never have to treat the pillow case with chemicals.

– Odourless sensitive detergents are best for washing pet mattresses, pillows and covers. Whitish nasal discharge and frequent sneezing are clear indications of allergy.

Where should your dog bed be put?

Most dogs want to be as near to the pack as possible. Place the bed next to the couch or under/next to your sleeping area. If you need your dog to sleep only, place it in a quiet nook away from open house windows.

How do We sew a dog bed?

A simple dog bed is built like a pillow case. For products with a shape, you can cut polyurethane foam to size or sew your own covers for existing foam shapes.

Which dog bed do old dogs and puppies need?

Pups feel safe and comfortable in round dog beds. Older dogs lie most easily on orthopaedic products with a memory foam core.

Why will my cat pee in the dog bed?

Cats are true protest peeers. If your kitty frequently uses the dog bed as a toilet, try to create more retreats in the house and work on the relationship between kitty and dog (approach training).

  • A Quick Comparison of Our Favorites in 2024
  • The 10 Best Travel Dog Beds
  • 1. Chuckit! Travel Pillow Dog Bed – Best Overall

Chuckit! Travel Pillow Dog Bed

Our pick for the best overall travel dog bed is the Chuckit! Travel Pillow Dog Bed . This bed is particularly good if you’re going camping or traveling in an RV, but works equally well for hotel stays and even when you’re at home. The bed comes with a bag to carry it in, so it’s a breeze to pack up and toss in the car when you need it. And it’s super comfy for dogs of most sizes (giant breeds might not fit well on this one, though). The Chuckit! Travel Pillow isn’t waterproof, but it is water-resistant. It’s also machine washable and dries quickly when wet.

Pet parents said their dogs loved it, and most pet owners were fans of it, too. However, a couple of people mentioned that it wasn’t the best travel bed for dogs with arthritis or joint issues as it wasn’t thick enough for them. This also doesn’t seem to be the best travel bed for heavy chewers.

  • Great for camping & RVing
  • Comes with bag for easy transport
  • Fits most sizes
  • Not for giant breeds
  • Not the best travel bed for dogs with joint problems or arthritis
  • Heavy chewers easily destroyed it
  • 2. Frisco Self-Warming Pillow Rectangular Pet Bed – Best Value

Frisco Self-Warming Pillow Rectangular Pet Bed

When you want the best travel dog bed for the money, the Frisco Self-Warming bed fits the bill. This travel dog bed is highly affordable and extra comfy for your doggo. Plus, this bed utilizes your dog’s body heat by reflecting it back to keep your pup nice and warm no matter where they are. That means plenty of warmth without having to deal with plugs or wires! This bed also only weighs a little over a pound, so it’s easy to pick up and take with you for travel.

Dog owners said this bed’s self-warming ability was excellent for aging pets with joint pain. Some people found it to be a little too thin, though. There were also puppies who managed to rip and chew through this bed quite quickly, so if your pup tends to be a bit destructive, you may want to look for something else.

  • Lightweight for travel
  • Self-warming
  • Might be too thin
  • Not great for puppies who enjoy chewing and digging
  • 3. Frisco Velvet Bolster Bed with Removable Cover – Premium Choice

Frisco Velvet Bolster Bed with Removable Cover

This premium dog bed by Frisco provides your favorite canine companion with a velvety soft place to lay their head during travels. The shape allows your dog to curl up for naps, while the bolster going all the way around gives them a spot to comfortably rest their head, so there’s less strain on the neck. Best of all is the machine washable removable cover that makes keeping this bed clean a breeze.

This bed weighs more than many other beds on our list (though it still doesn’t weigh a lot), so keep that in mind when deciding which bed is best for your travels. It’s much pricier than other travel dog beds, too. There were also a few complaints about the center of the bed deflating within a few months.

  • Bolster for neck support
  • Incredibly soft
  • Machine washable
  • Weighs a bit more than other beds
  • Center may get flattened with time
  • 4. Best Friends by Sheri Calming Shag Fur Donut Cuddler  – Best for Puppies

Best Friends by Sheri The Original Calming Shag Fur Donut Cuddler Cat & Dog Bed

If you have a puppy not used to traveling, they could get a bit anxious on the road. So, why not invest in this calming dog bed by Best Friends by Sheri ? This shaggy donut bed is designed for burrowing, digging, and cuddling so your dog can get their anxiety out. It also claims to provide better sleep for your pet while supporting joints. Plus, this donut bed is supposed to be self-warming, so your dog will always be at optimal coziness! This bed comes in four sizes, so it should fit almost any dog breed, from the tiniest to the largest.

The biggest complaint about this bed is that the shaggy fibers shed all over the place. The next biggest complaint was that some people received beds where the center didn’t have enough padding.

  • Calms anxiety
  • Cozy and supportive
  • Sheds a lot
  • Some people received beds without adequate padding
  • 5. Brindle Plush Orthopedic Pillow Dog Bed

Brindle Plush Orthopedic Pillow Cat & Dog Bed with Removable Cover

This travel bed by Brindle offers your dog tons of comfort; this orthopedic bed is made with memory foam, providing support to those pups with joint pain and arthritic issues by conforming to their body. It’s also a fabulous option for dogs without joint problems, as it’s super soft and incredibly comfortable. It comes with a water-resistant removable cover, so if your dog has an accident on it, the bed won’t be ruined. This travel bed is also hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites, so your pet can breathe easier while using it.

There were a couple of complaints of the bed developing mold on the bottom of it, so people advised checking the bottom of the bed every time you remove the cover. And a few people said the cover was very fragile and didn’t hold up to digging.

  • Orthopedic, so it’s extremely comfy
  • Water-resistant, removable cover
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Reports of mold growing on the bottom
  • Cover seems to be a bit fragile
  • 6. Frisco Tent Covered Dog Bed

Frisco Tent Covered Dog & Cat Bed

Going camping? Why not get your pup their own tent? This adorable tent bed gives your dog their own little den to hide away in when you’re out and about and comes with a cozy removable pillow for the inside. That pillow is machine washable, too, so it’s simple to clean. There are only two sizes for this one, so large and giant breeds will, unfortunately, be left out of the tent fun, but it’s a great size for small and medium breeds.

While this tent bed is lightweight, the shape may make it a bit more challenging to put in a well-packed car. Also, many people said that the tent beds they received were much smaller than pictured, and their pets couldn’t fit in them, so the sizing on these may be off.

  • Gives dogs their own den/tent
  • Pillow inside is machine washable
  • Shape may make it harder to pack in car
  • Not for large or giant breeds
  • Sizing on beds may be off, so bed might be smaller than advertised
  • 7. Frisco Pillow Dog Bed w/ Removeable Cover

Frisco Pillow Dog Bed w/ Removeable Cover

Frisco is known for making good pet products, so finding another Frisco bed on this list should be no surprise! This bed may be simple, but as it’s made from faux suede, it’s soft and comfy for your dog to lay on. And though it offers plenty of cushioning due to the polyfiber filling, it’s designed to be easier to step onto, so dogs that have trouble with raised sides have an easier time getting on it. There’s also a removable cover that can be tossed into the wash for simpler clean-ups, and when it comes to travel, this bed can be folded in half.

The majority of dog parents were pleased with how cushiony this bed is (as were their dogs!). The biggest complaint about this bed is that it didn’t hold up as well as it should have when washed. Some people also recommended putting a waterproof cover on the inside as this bed isn’t water-resistant or waterproof, so it can become smelly if there are accidents on it.

  • Thick and comfy
  • Made to be easier for dogs to step up on
  • Can fold in half for travel
  • May not hold up in wash as well as it should
  • Isn’t water-resistant or -proof
  • 8. K&H Pet Products Original Pet Cot Elevated Pet Bed

K&H Pet Products Original Pet Cot Elevated Pet Bed

This elevated dog bed , at first glance, might not look like the best dog bed for travel, but you can collapse it when you need to pack it up, and it’s lightweight, so it’s actually pretty great. And because it’s elevated, it’s the perfect bed for both indoor and outdoor travel; now your dog doesn’t have to lay on the ground! Even better, this bed is designed to help your dog stay cool when the weather is warm, and it’s made from water-resistant fabric that stands up to accidents and inclement weather.

There were plenty of happy campers when it came to this bed; however, there were a few complaints. It seems some people had problems with the plastic frame getting broken, while others had an issue with stitching coming undone on the sides. A handful of people also commented that their beds ended up being saggy in the middle after several months of use.

  • Collapses for easy travel
  • Elevated so your dog doesn’t have to lie on the ground
  • Helps your pet stay cool when it’s warm
  • Plastic frame not always sturdy enough
  • Stitching sometimes comes apart
  • Middle may become saggy over time
  • 9. Frisco Travel Pillow Dog Bed with Reusable Storage Bag

Frisco Travel Pillow Dog Bed with Reusable Storage Bag

This cute travel dog bed comes in large and x-large, so it should fit many dog breeds (although people with dogs 120 pounds and up said the x-large was too small). Packing it up for on-the-go is simple as it comes with a storage bag to cart it around. Polyester microfiber on the outside gives your pup a soft place for naps, while the bottom is made of ripstop nylon to help prevent tears. The cover is machine washable, but unlike some dog beds where the material in the bed shifts around during washing making it lumpy, this dog bed is designed to prevent that.

This bed is thinner, though, so if your pet needs something orthopedic, this definitely isn’t the right bed for them. Other than that and the size, some people simply didn’t like the material this was made of as they said it resembled that of a sleeping bag.

  • Easy to travel with
  • Bottom of bed is made to minimize tearing
  • Shouldn’t become lumpy when washed
  • Even x-large isn’t big enough for larger & giant breeds
  • Bed is on the thin side
  • Some people didn’t like the material of the bed
  • 10. Petmate Orthopedic Pillow Dog Bed w/Removable Cover

Petmate Antimicrobial Deluxe Orthopedic Pillow Dog Bed with Removable Cover

Traveling to new places can sometimes mean picking up a few bugs here and there, which is why this travel dog bed is so great . Because it’s antimicrobial, it’s designed to prevent bacteria from thriving in the fibers of the bed. This also means not only will the bed be a healthier place for your canine companion to sleep, but it will also be less smelly! Plus, the antimicrobial elements will help prevent mildew and mold. The faux suede material will provide your pet with a comfy spot to lay down, and the cover is machine washable.

Most people and their pups enjoyed this bed, but there were a handful of complaints. Dogs who were heavy chewers easily chewed this bed apart, and a couple of people said the dimensions were smaller than stated. A few people also didn’t like the fabric as they said it was very thin.

  • Antimicrobial
  • Machine washable cover
  • Not for heavy chewers
  • May be smaller than advertised
  • Fabric is thin

  • Buyer’s Guide: Choosing the Best Travel Dog Beds

Now that you’ve had a chance to review the best travel dog beds, it’s time to learn more about what you should be looking for in one. A good travel dog bed will have several factors, which we’ll discuss below.

  • Dog’s Sleeping Position

Before considering any other factors of a travel dog bed, look at how your dog sleeps. The position they sleep in most often can help you decide what travel bed is best for them. If your pup tends to sleep all curled up, they might prefer something like a donut bed. But if they tend to sprawl, they need a bed that’s longer and wider to hold them as they splay every which way!

The size of a travel bed is vital, too. If you aren’t looking carefully at the dimensions of a dog bed and comparing them to your dog’s length and height, you’re liable to end up with a dog bed that’s either way too small or way too large for what your canine companion needs.

  • Ease of Transport

Since you’ll be traveling with this dog bed, you need to ensure it’s easy to transport. Some dog beds on this list can be rolled up and stored for easier transport. Others are collapsible. Then, there are some beds that might be able to be folded in half so you can pack them in the car. A few travel dog beds don’t fold, collapse, or roll up, but they’re flat enough that you should be able to slide them into your car.

Dog travel beds should also be lightweight enough that you can pick them up to move them around, so check how much a dog bed weighs before you purchase it!

Jack Russell Terrier in lounger dog bed for travel inside the car

The whole point of a travel dog bed is keeping your pet comfortable during trips, so you need to find a bed that offers them the comfort they need. This will look different for each dog. Some pups may have joint pain and need a bed that’s orthopedic to help them stay comfy. Other dogs might prefer something super snuggly and soft. Still, other canines might be perfectly at ease with a simple bed that just keeps them off the ground. And some dogs might be more comfortable with a bed that has a bolster or neck support. You know your pet best, so find a bed that matches their required level of comfort.

When you buy a travel dog bed, you want it to last a long time. That means checking on how durable it may be. Is the bed made out of durable materials? Will it hold up to heavy chewing and digging, or will your pup, who loves to chew things, tear it to pieces the second you bring it home? Be sure to check what the bed is made of to gauge whether it will hold up to your pup’s level of wear and tear.

  • Water-Resistant or Waterproof

Not all dog travel beds will be water-resistant or waterproof (and sometimes that might not be a priority). If you’re using this bed mostly outdoors, though, you want a bed that will hold up in inclement weather. And if your dog sometimes has accidents or if you think they’ll be inclined to use the dog bed as a potty pad, a bed with a water-resistant or -proof cover is a must.

person wiping water droplets from surface of waterproof fabric

  • Washability

You’ll be washing your dog’s bed often (particularly if you travel frequently) to eliminate any bacteria or germs it might’ve picked up while you and your pup were out and about. That means you need a travel dog bed that’s simple to clean. The majority of these beds will have removable covers that can be washed, but you’ll find a few that are spot-clean only, so decide what will be easiest for you.

Obviously, you’ll want a bed that fits into your budget. Dog beds can get a bit pricey sometimes, but there are some that are quite affordable, too, so be sure to shop around for the best price. Also, check out how long the bed you’re considering held up for other people, so you know you’re getting your money’s worth!

Reading reviews from other dog parents who have used the product you’re thinking of buying is one of the best ways to ensure you’re getting a bed that meets your needs. You can find plenty of reviews for dog beds online, so take a look to find out the good and bad of any travel dog bed you’re thinking about.

1. Best overall dog bed: Danish Design Luxury Deep Duvet

Price: From £25.34 | Buy now from Amazon

“Our large Doberman has a lovely grey Danish Design bed. We took her to a pet shop to try some out and as soon as this was on the floor she settled herself down in it! That sold it to us. Still going strong two years later.” (Vetted by Mumsnet user Kayjay2018 )

“I buy my doggie Danish Design beds and they last a lifetime. They have removable covers which are washable and have memory foam inners so are really supportive, etc. I have a very large Basset Hound and she prefers these to a bed as can stretch right out in them. The first one I bought her lasted me about six years and outlasted any other bed I purchased.” (Tried and tested by Mumsnet user Cosmos45 )

Danish Design makes great value dog beds that are both fun and functional. We love this woodland stag print duvet which is filled with super soft polyester for your furry friend to happily doze away on.

The covers are made from 100 percent cotton and can be easily removed to go in the washing machine . They are available to buy separately if your pooch likes to chew everything in sight and, as the beds come at a very reasonable price, you can buy more than one to dot around your home.

Mumsnet users particularly rate the durability of this bed which can last for years and years, making it the ideal resting spot for any tired pooch. That, combined with its stylish design, snug feeling and ease of cleaning, make this a clear choice for the best overall award.

You can choose from Danish Design’s range of quirky prints, including their collaboration with FatFace in which they produced a whole collection made from recycled bottles.

Size: 138 x 87 x 20cm (large, but available in a medium size too)

Material: Cotton and polyester

2. Best budget dog bed: Amazon Basics Round Pet Bed

Price: from £18.66 | Buy now from Amazon

"It's a dog bed, they don't give a hoot as long as its comfy, warm and smells of dog."  (Advice from Mumsnetter Tessasanderson )

If you're not sure which dog bed is best for your pup, or if you're going through dog beds at a fast pace (especially in those first few puppy months) this budget-friendly Amazon Basics option could well be the answer. Suitable either as a cheap starting point or for a dog who is (like Tessasanderson says) just looking for a comfy, warm place to sleep without any bells or whistles, this dog bed ticks all the budget-friendly boxes on our list.

Dogs that like to curl up when they sleep will love the soft cushion, and the curved edge provides somewhere for your pooch to comfortably rest their head. It’s small enough to fit in a dog crate or kennel and can be easily taken away with you on holiday, making it a great travel bed.

Made from plush flannel and filled with polyester, the neutral colour scheme will complement any home and it’s easy to wash, though it does need to be line dried .

Size: 50 x 50 x 15cm

Material: Flannel and polyester

3. Best orthopedic dog bed: JOYELF Orthopedic Dog Bed

Price: From £39.99   | Buy now from Amazon

“We've bought several beds but the ones that have really lasted are the JOYELF ones. They are quite hard wearing and wash up nicely and they have firm but comfy edges to rest doggy chins on.” (Recommended by Mumsnet user AlwaysLatte )

The JOYELF Orthopedic Dog Bed offers great support to help prevent your dog from developing joint and hip issues, especially common in older pups or those that suffer from arthritis.

It has a memory foam mattress and soft fabric for ultimate comfort, and the padded bolster cushion provides extra support for their neck and head.

The cover easily zips on and off for fuss-free washing and the bottom of the bed is rubber to prevent it from slipping around. The bed also comes with a bone-shaped squeaky toy for your dog to play with.

This bed is suitable for medium to large sized dogs, but there are many other sizes available and we love that it comes eight dimensions, so you can find the perfect fit for any breed. One thing to be aware of is that it does increase in price quite a lot for the larger models, but it's a long-lasting, snug bed that many will find is worth the initial investment.

Size: 102 x 77 x 23cm (extra large, but smaller sizes are available)

Material: Memory foam, rubber and cotton

4. Best calming dog bed: Comfy Calming Donut Bed

Price: £35.00 | Buy now from Argos

"My mini schnauzer loves her doughnut bed."  (Vetted by Mumsnet user MissyB1 )

If your dog likes to curl up and get cosy, they’ll love this Comfy Calming Donut Bed from Argos. A soft padded cushion with a long fluffy pile for them to burrow into, doughnut beds are thought to have a calming effect on anxious dogs - and are a great alternative to your sofa!

This bed comes at a really reasonable price too so if you have a pup that likes to chew, replacing it won’t cost the earth. The downside is that it only comes in one size so do check that your dog isn’t too big. It’s thought to be suitable for mid-sized dogs, with a working Cocker Spaniel and Labradoodle giving it a big paws up in consumer reviews.

Size: (Internal) 20 x 76 x 76cm

Material: Polyester

5. Best memory foam dog bed: PetFusion Waterproof Memory Foam Mattress

Price: £89.95 (large) | Buy now from Amazon

“This PetFusion bed is very popular with the arthritic dog group. There’s a massive one that made a Greyhound in it look small. It also has replacement covers which can be swapped when you need to wash.” (Rated by Mumsnet user Scattyhattie)

With a 10cm memory foam base, the PetFusion Waterproof Memory Foam Mattress provides a comfortable yet supportive place for your dog to relax after a hard day playing and sniffing.

If your furry friend likes to rest their head on your lap, the generously filled bolster cushion offers a great alternative. The polyester and cotton blend material is water-resistant and durable as well as being tear-resistant, but there are replacement covers available if your pup ends up having a fight with their bed.

The removable cover is easy to clean and is available in three colours and different sizes to suit all kinds of dogs, both big and small.

Size: 91 x 71 x 23cm

Material: Polyester/cotton blend

6. Best waterproof dog bed: The Dog’s Bed Orthopedic Mattress Bed

Price: from £47.99 | Buy now from Amazon

“The Dog’s Bed from Amazon - great quality, completely waterproof and washable, and lovely bolstered sides for snoozing.” (Tried and tested by Mumsnet user Baybetterdays )

If your dog is prone to accidents, a waterproof bed like The Dog’s Bed will help with clean-ups. The removable cover and washable inner protects the memory foam mattress while also being resistant to mould , mildew and dust mites.

Suitable for any dog who likes to stretch out when they nap but especially older dogs or those that suffer from mobility issues, this bed will provide a hygienic and comfortable place for them to rest. It’s available in a range of colours and sizes, although some owners suggest sizing up to ensure your dog has plenty of room to spread out.

Size: 91 x 70 x 10cm (large)

Material: Foam

7. Best luxury dog bed: Barbour Luxury 35 Inch Pet Bed

Price: £99 | Buy now from Pets at Home

"I have three beds I use for my dog... She likes the big Barbour one the best." (Brand vetted by Mumsnet user blueskyinmarch )

If you can afford the price tag, Barbour dog beds are a great investment for your four-legged friend. Known for their country chic aesthetic, this snug bed fits into the brand's signature style thanks to its classic tartan pattern. We also love the leather Barbour badge for that extra touch of class.

It's not all style over substance though, as comfort is ensured with thick wadding and a faux suede inner lining. We also rate the raised walls on this bed, creating a den-like atmosphere that dogs will love when they're napping post-walkies.

The only drawback is its washability, however. The base cushion can be popped in the washing machine with no trouble, but the rest of the bed is sadly sponge clean only which may make keeping it spick and span a little trickier than other beds. Users did find it was simple to remove dirt with a wipe though, but there is a little more effort involved than throwing it in the washing machine for a quick spin.

Size: 35 x 27 x 13 inches (large)

Material: Wool blend material, polyester wadding, faux suede inner lining, leather badge

8. Best stylish dog bed: Joules Velvet Chesterfield Pet Bed

Price: £70 | Buy now from Joules

“Our dog loves the Joules dog beds - she's a sprawler too so we tend to buy a size up. They're really nice!” (Brand tried and tested by pet owner Ginlsln )

The Joules Chesterfield Velvet Pet Bed is for pups that like to relax in style. The bright colour and soft plush velvet design comes complete with traditional tufting detail that’s inspired by Joules’ bestselling Windsor Sofa.

Just like on the real thing, the bed’s raised back is extra padded so your furry friend can cosy up. But while it may feel luxurious, it’s durable too, with a non-slip base, reversible inner cushion and machine-washable fabric.

Pick between two sizes and two stylish colours to suit your pup.

Size: 47 x 54 x 52cm

Material: Velvet

9. Best for small dogs: Scruffs Manhattan Box Bed

Price: From £27.49 | Buy now from Amazon

We love the cosy look of this box bed from trusted pet supplies brand Scruffs, and we're happy to report it's just as snug as it looks. Coming in at 50cm x 40cm, it's ideal for smaller breeds, although it does go up to XL for larger pooches too. Reviewers also loved the all-in-one design which prevents dogs from removing (or destroying) the base cushion.

We were impressed with the colour choices. Available in Light Grey, Dark Grey, Berry Purple and Denim Blue, you get a lot more choice than some beds and can pick the perfect hue to complement your home. The Scruffs logo on the front is a nice touch too, although some may not be a fan.

Best of all? It's machine washable (at 30 degrees), so you can easily clean it after it's been dirtied by the muckiest pup!

Size: 50 x 40cm (small)

10. Best dog bed for large dogs: Tuffies Durasoft Nest Dog Bed

Price: From £137 | Buy now from Tuffies

“We have them. Excellent beds. You can hose or spray down the mattress and wash the covers which controls the pong of your dog. The mattresses we have are almost three years old and show no signs of wear.” (Recommended by Mumsnet user GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman )

“We've got a Tuffies bed. Our Cocker and Sprocker share the XL size and have more than enough room each in it. It doesn't smell, is easy to clean and the best bit is that the puppy hasn't chewed any of it. It wasn't cheap but I'm really pleased with it.” (Tried and tested by Mumsnet user JaneEyre07 )

Tuffies come up time and time again on our forums, with Mumsnetters agreeing that Tuffies dog beds stand the test of time even though the initial outlay may be eye-watering.

Made in Scotland, the Tuffies Nest Dog Bed is loved by both dogs and their owners thanks to its thick high sides and super soft fleece-covered futon mattress. The fabric is waterproof and, while it may not be chew-proof (though Tuffies does have a range for this), owners say the beds last for years and the thick mattress doesn’t lose its shape or flatten, even after cleaning.

This large bed is suitable for dogs weighing 15 to 30kg, but the nests come in sizes small to extra large and are available in 32 colourways.

Size: 75 x 60cm (large)

Material: Texturised nylon and fleece

What type of bed is best for dogs?

Consider what type of bed you need for your dog - these are some of the most common:

Orthopedic – made with memory foam mattresses, they offer more support and comfort to a dog’s bones and joints and can improve mobility, as well as helping them get a good night’s sleep. This is especially helpful for older or arthritic dogs.

Raised – another orthopedic option, raised beds offer firm support across your pet’s entire body. As they are elevated off the ground, air flows more easily to keep them cool and dry material making it more hygienic. The material is durable (and less easy to chew) and simple to clean.

Bolster/sofa – a soft flat mattress with a bolster cushion around the sides, dogs love having somewhere to rest their head when you’re not around. A sofa or couch-style dog bed with higher cushions can give a dog a sense of security and comfort.

Doughnut – a ring-shaped dog bed, these are very plush and cuddly for dogs that like to curl up and burrow in. They are thought to help calm anxious dogs and make them feel more secure. As they’re soft, they may be difficult for older dogs to get out of.

Cushion/mattress – if your dog likes to spread out, they may prefer a flat mattress or cushion for lying on. Make sure that it offers plenty of support.

Tunnel/cave bed  – this is a mattress with a roof for your dog to get under. This may be more suitable for dogs that are more inclined to burrow, like Beagles and Dachshunds.

Do dogs prefer firm or soft beds?

Look at how your dog sleeps - if your pup likes to curl up on the sofa then a bolster or sofa-style bed may be a good alternative to the real thing.

If they’re getting older or suffering from mobility issues, a soft memory foam mattress will be more suitable. For dogs that overheat, a raised bed will help keep them cool while a plush doughnut bed will be cosier.

How do I keep my dog's bed clean?

It’s important to keep your chosen dog bed fresh and clean, especially for breeds that shed a lot of fur. You can look for materials that don’t attract fur as easily such as mesh or have removable covers for washing. Hypoallergenic materials will also help to ward off dust and mites.

Some beds can go in the washing machine, but it’s worth checking the reviews to make sure  they don’t lose their shape easily.

How can I make my dog's bed last longer?

Try and look for a heavy-duty bed that won’t wear easily -  check that the material is durable and well stitched. For chewers, try a raised bed, one without padding or that is made with chew-proof material. If your dog is incontinent or has accidents, look for one that is waterproof.

What size bed does my dog need?

Should a dog bed be bigger than a dog?  Dog beds come in all shapes and sizes, but it’s important to make sure the bed has plenty of room for your dog to get comfortable and move around. Their body needs to be fully supported so measure your dog to check the bed will be big enough and size up if needed. While wiggle room is necessary, it's also important to remember that dogs are pack animals who love a snuggle, so if their bed is a little on the large side, perhaps think about adding a pillow or a blanket.

What is the best bed for a dog?

We think the Danish Design Luxury Deep Duvet is the best dog bed to buy right now. Owners love the range of quirky designs while their furry friends enjoy snoozing away on the super soft mattress. The cover is easily removed for washing and the bed comes at a really affordable price too.

How we chose our recommendations

When it comes to our precious pooches, we want the best for them. So, to help you choose the comfiest place for your dog to rest, we searched high and low for the top rated options for any pet owner. Here's how we whittled our list down to the best 10 buys.

Dog beds tested by Mumsnet users

We know the value of an independent suggestion from a real person, so the first stop in our quest for the best was the Mumsnet forums . Most of our recommendations for dog beds came from Mumsnet users themselves. We spent extensive time searching many threads for posts about which dog beds they really rated.

Honest consumer reviews

Our next step was to comb through customer reviews on various retailer and review sites to make sure each product was well-regarded amongst those who'd used them every day. We focused on comfort, ease of use getting on or off the bed, washability, style and how hardwearing users found them. We carefully weighed up the merits and limitations of each bed too, ensuring we were bringing you an in-depth guide you can trust.

Expert guidance

Our final step was to cross-check our shortlisted selection of recommendations with expert pet websites and best buy lists so we could be sure we had covered the best brands and products rated across the board.

Why you should trust us

We work hard to provide unbiased, independent advice you can trust. We do sometimes earn revenue through affiliate (click-to-buy) links in our articles. This helps us fund more helpful articles like this one.

Across the Thames from Hampton Court Palace, The Mitre has "canine-friendly rooms on the ground floor" with "access to an outdoor terrace", said Condé Nast Traveller, and a welcome pack (bed, bowl, poop bags and treats) on arrival. Dogs can accompany owners to the Coppernose restaurant, "set in a rotunda with Thames views", and there's also a "sizeable river terrace and Orangery space". You'll find "good walks along the footpath past the palace", or next door in Bushy Park, although "be mindful of the deer during rutting season".
