Remembering the Texan rockabilly pioneer Buddy Knox

  • 7 minute read

A quarter of a century after his passing,  we remember the Texan rockabilly pioneer  Buddy Knox, who got the world on its feet with  his evergreen dancefloor-filler Party Doll – Words Douglas McPherson

In 1955, a new star blazed across Texas.  Elvis Presley’s scream-inducing performances shook up the lives of all who saw him, but none more so than those of Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison and Buddy Knox. On separate fateful nights in Lubbock, Midland and Amarillo, they went to Presley’s shows as aspiring country singers and came out as rockabillies.

Today, Knox is the least remembered of the three but was the first to find success. With his indelible debut single Party Doll , which peaked at No.2 in the US in 1957, he became the first West Texas artist to write his own million-selling hit.

He inspired Buddy Holly to record at Norman Petty’s studio and during Holly’s lifetime was very much his equal as a star, wowing audiences on Alan Freed’s package shows.

Knox scored further hits with Rock Your Little Baby To Sleep and Hula Love , which he performed in the classic jukebox movie Jamboree , where he had third billing after Fats Domino and Jerry Lee Lewis.

In later years, Knox enjoyed success as a country singer and was rediscovered by European rockabilly revivalists at a fabled concert with Jack Scott, Warren Smith and Charlie Feathers at London’s Rainbow theatre in 1977. The show was immortalised on the live album Four Rock’n’roll Legends and established the market for the plethora of weekenders headlined by 1950s artists that continue to this day.

Buddy Knox - Party Doll

EASY-GOING NATURE

Buddy Knox was born on 20 July 1933 on a wheat farm 13 miles northeast of Happy, in the Texas panhandle. Its motto is ‘The Town Without A Frown’ and speaking to Gary James at the website classicbands.com, Knox said it was “Just as it sounds really, a nice small town to grow up and go to school in. Almost ideal.”

The place perhaps shaped the singer’s easy-going nature. Knox was always a friendly, approachable figure, never a rock’n’roll bad boy. His childhood home had no electricity and his early exposure to popular music was limited to weekly country programmes The Grand Ole Opry and Louisiana Hayride that his parents would listen to before shutting down the generator that powered their radio.

His musical talent came from his mother, Gladys, who sang on a local radio station in a gospel group with her parents and siblings. “My aunt played guitar really good and sang like a bird,” Knox recalled to Jerry Naylor and Steve Halliday in their 2007 book The Rockabilly Legends: They Called It Rockabilly Long Before They Called It Rock And Roll. “She taught me to play guitar chords. I didn’t know many songs, so I started making them up. I wrote Party Doll and Hula Love when I was about 12 or 13 years old.”

SWEET SERENADE

Knox began his musical career at West Texas State College where he formed the Serenaders with fellow students Jimmy Bowen on bass and Donnie Lanier on guitar. They played campus dances and drive-in movie theatres.

By day, Knox was studying for a masters degree in accounting – “and almost got it,” he recalled. He had plans to work for an oil company as a management trainee. But then he saw Elvis, and glimpsed a different future. He met the soon-to-be-King backstage and Presley told him that rock’n’roll was “Fixin’ to happen”.

The Serenaders immediately transformed into a rockabilly band and renamed themselves the Rhythm Orchids, taking their name from the purple colour of their matching shirts.

Party Doll was their most-requested song and Knox wondered where they might record it. When the group appeared on a radio show with Roy Orbison And The Teen Kings, Orbison suggested they go to Norman Petty’s home studio in Clovis, New Mexico.

Petty and his wife Vi, working as the Norman Petty Trio, had recently scored a No.14 US hit with their version of the instrumental Mood Indigo .

Although they’d built a studio in their garage primarily for their own use, Orbison had persuaded them to let him cut Ooby Dooby there. That recording, issued by Je-Wel, won Orbison a deal with Sun Records, where he recut the song.

Petty agreed to record the Rhythm Orchids for $60 in April 1956. Because his home was on a state highway, a session was convened from midnight till dawn to avoid recording the sound of passing trucks. It quickly became apparent that the trio weren’t ready to record. Party Doll had to be edited down from an unwieldy 14 verses, Bowen’s bass playing was subpar and they had no drummer. Petty sent them home without charge and arranged another session after a couple of weeks rehearsal.

When they returned to Clovis, Lanier brought his girlfriend Patricia Everett to play drums, although the high school marching band musician brought no drum kit, just a pair of ‘sock cymbals’ – a precursor to the modern hi-hat.

Luckily, Petty’s drummer Dave Alldred happened to be hanging out at the house and stepped in. He drummed on a cardboard box filled with cotton pillows while Everett played cymbals. The makeshift drum gave Party Doll a distinctive sound that Buddy Holly’s sticksman Jerry Allison later recreated on Not Fade Away .

TIME TO WAX

With another of Petty’s pals replacing Bowen on bass, the line-up was completed by Knox’s sister Verdi and two of her friends on backing vocals. Knox later recalled that it took 57 takes to nail the final song. They still found time, however, to wax the Knox-Bowen composition I’m Stickin’ With You with Bowen on vocals.

Knox pressed 1,500 copies of Party Doll with I’m Stickin’ With You on the flipside, on his own Triple-D label, named after local radio station KDDD in Dumas. A DJ called Dean Kelly began spinning the disc in Amarillo and it became a regional hit.

Lanier’s sister Teddy, meanwhile, was a fashion model in New York. She took a copy of the single to music publisher Phil Kahl, who passed it on to nightclub owner Morris Levy.

Levy decided to release the songs as separate singles – one by Knox, the other by Bowen – on his newly-formed label, Roulette, in January 1957. Both became million-sellers. I’m Stickin’ With You reached No.14, but Party Doll did better, hitting No.2 in the US.

OVERNIGHT SUCCESS

Phil Kahl became Knox’s manager and secured him a spot on US television’s biggest entertainment programme of the day, The Ed Sullivan Show. Overnight, the farm boy became a star. And even though Dick Clark refused to play the song because of the hook line, “I’ll make love to you”, that couldn’t stop its runaway success.

A contemporaneous cover version by Steve Lawrence also hit the Billboard Top 10 while Wingy Manone and Roy Brown aimed versions at the R&B market.

Knox’s momentum was broken, though, when he was drafted into the US army at the height of Party Doll ’s success and planned European dates including a London Palladium show had to be scrapped. He was, however, given leave to promote his follow-up single Rock Your Little Baby To Sleep on The Ed Sullivan Show, on the condition that he appeared in uniform. The disc was credited to ‘Lieutenant Buddy Knox’ and made No.23 on Billboard’s chart.

TEX MEX ROCKABILLY

The hits continued with Hula Love and Somebody Touched Me , but grew smaller with That’s Why I Cry and I Think I’m Gonna Kill Myself , a break-up song with a title that ensured many radio stations wouldn’t play it.

By the end of the 1950s, Knox had become disillusioned with Roulette who wanted to smooth out the rough edges of his rock’n’roll sound to broaden his commercial appeal. Buddy wanted to stick to his guns and knock out a raucous Tex Mex rockabilly and rock’n’roll hybrid.

Worse, he wasn’t receiving any royalties. Reportedly, Roulette ended up owning all of his recordings and cut of the publishing, scooping up all the accrued royalties and leaving Knox with nothing.

RUFF RECORDS

Moving to Liberty, Knox recorded songs about Chinese and Mexican lovers ( Ling-Ting-Tong and Chi-Hua-Hua ) in an effort to recreate the success of the Hawaiian-themed Hula Love , but without success.

More impressive were the gritty rocker Jo Ann on Ruff in 1965 and the Monkees-flavoured Sixteen Feet of Patio in 1966, but it wasn’t until the country-rock Gypsy Man two years later that he found himself back on a chart, this time the country listing.

After divorcing his first wife, Knox relocated to Canada in 1970 and opened a successful country nightclub, the Purple Steer, in Vancouver.

“Dad always said that Canada reminded him of Texas, only with colder winters,” his son Michael reported to the Winnipeg Free Press . “He loved Canada.”

OUTLAW COUNTRY

Aligned with the outlaw country movement in America and the rockabilly revival circuit in Europe, Knox toured constantly but called Canada his home until 1990, when the onset of depression and heavy drinking brought about the end of his third marriage.

At that point, he moved to Port Orchard, Washington State, where, in 1994, he released his final album, a compilation called Hard Knocks And Bobby Sox.

In January 1999, the singer fell and broke his hip. An examination revealed bone cancer, which had spread throughout his body. He died within a couple of weeks, on 14 February, aged 65, and was buried in Canyon, Texas, not far from his birthplace.

Knox was posthumously inducted into the Rockabilly Hall Of Fame, while the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame listed Party Doll as one of the 500 songs that shaped rock’n’roll.

Buddy Knox has been working on his latest album, Ticket To Memphis for the past five years. However, his guitar skills have been carving up the Blues scene around Australia since 2007, having notched his Blues-belt with all the big ticket Australian festivals from Bridgetown to Bluesfest.

Ticket To Memphis weaves the unique Buddy Knox story into its songs – It’s powerful music, bluesy and genuine.

Buddy has won the “Sydney Blues Society Performer of the Year” TWICE, and continues to share his old school Blues style with fans. He plays with smooth finesse, in the tasty authentic style of the old legends. Armed with his signature 335 Gibson, his devotion to the art form is undeniable.

He’s been referred to as Australia’s very own BB King, but expect a dash of Freddie King guitar in his styling. Buddy’s recent move to acoustic Blues gives fans the intimate experience of bare bones genuine Blues…Knox style.

Buddy is the eldest son of country artist Roger Knox, who grew up immersed in music as a way of life. The influence of music in his Community was a huge everyday event, someone always played guitar, or sang and people gathered to enjoy.

Buddy said he was “a dreamer” who yearned to play like Chuck Berry. Chuck was on the home record player a lot and Buddy thought, “If only I could just play like that”.

He was taught three chords by his Mother Vivian, when he was 10, and practised on a community guitar which was missing two strings. He learned by watching and listening to other players and never had lessons.

Around the time he was 14, his Father asked him to play for him in his Band “Euraba”. Roger had been recuperating after surviving two plane crashes where one band member was sadly killed in one of the plane wrecks. “He didn’t have to ask me twice,” said Buddy. He jumped at the chance and started touring with the Euraba band. He experienced riots with community and police clashes, bomb threats and fairly tough touring conditions, but loved it – playing was all he wanted to do.

As his guitar skills continued to develop, he was invited on tour with Brian Young. Brian was a travelling troubadour who toured with a Band around the outback and desert regions of Australia covering around 35000 klms per tour.. Buddy has continued to play with other incredible artists; Auriel Andrew, Bobby McLeod, Jimmy Little, Vic Simms and he was even called up by Warumpi to play guitar on their gigs at the Big Day Out, as well as other concerts.

Ticket To Memphis is the culmination of Buddy’s life experiences, with original songs (Track-by-track commentary below) that see Buddy write alongside collaborators Gareth Hudson and Nick Higginbotham. Perhaps his proudest collaboration though, is having his three children playing and singing on some album tracks. With songs tackling the complete spectrum of life on the road, family, love (won, lost & fought back), regret and above all, celebration – Ticket To Memphis and Buddy Knox will reignite your belief in the power of story, song and smoking hot guitar playing!

TICKET TO MEMPHIS (Track-by-track commentary)

01. BIG CITY MEAN STREETS

No matter how many times I visit Australian cities, I always have the desire to get back to the comfort of my own Gamilaaray country. The beat of the Red Rattlers on the North West rail line tells me I’m on my way home.

02. TICKET TO MEMPHIS

Because someone I cared about believed in me and my music, I kept writing and performing during the hard times. Real milestones were twice winning entry into the International Blues Challenge in Memphis.

03. CALLING FROM THE OUTSIDE

At one point I knew I had to break away from my former life and angry thoughts. I want my children to see who I am now and work out new beginnings of their own.

04. A WAY OUT OF NO WAY

Grandma Phyllis was a tiny girl when stolen from her Gamilaaray family in Dhuumala and taken to an orphanage in the NSW far south coast. As a teenager Phyllis kept her promise. She broke away and followed her mother’s song lines home. The musical dynasty she founded passes down through me to my children and beyond.

05. BUNGUNYA

These are my earliest childhood memories playing alone among the Bungunya train sheds on the Queensland border. Somehow, sitting at my Nan’s feet while she strummed that old Gibson, I found a truth: You have to cross every river on your own.

06. BABY GIRL

Stepping back another generation, this song tells great-grandmother Emily’s story of losing baby Phyllis. One day, standing by the river in Dhuumala, the Aboriginal Protection Board arrived and brought a lifetime of pain.

07. MESSAGE IN STONE

Sometimes relationships with people can smoother you. Then you want to chisel in stone what it feels like to break free. We bring a reggae blues fusion to hammer this message home.

08. GOTTA GET IT RIGHT WITH HER (BUDDY’S SLOW JAM)

In the dead of night, it dawns on you that people you love are more precious than staying stuck in the past. At heart, I’m a lover, not a fighter.

09. SECOND CHANCE

If I am trying too hard, and fall over, the gift of a second chance is all I need to say I’m sorry. Goori and Quarralia Knox square off in a second chance rap duel.

10. TABLE FOR TWO

Waiting impatiently at a table for two, with big, big news. Best thing to pass the time is a strong brew of cappuccino

About buddy knox.

Buddy Knox was the first artist of the rock & roll era to write and record his own number one hit, 1957's million-selling classic "Party Doll" -- a pioneer of the Lone Star State rockabilly sound that would later earn the name "Tex-Mex," the arc of his career anticipated that of fellow Texan Buddy Holly, yet while Holly is now enshrined in the pantheon of rock's true immortals, Knox's contributions remain sadly underappreciated. Wayne Knox was born July 20, 1933 on a farm just outside the tiny West Texas town of Happy -- during World War II, his mother Gladys performed with her siblings as part of a family gospel group, although his love of country music first inspired him to pick up the guitar. After high school Knox attended West Texas State College, earning a business administration degree while moonlighting in an amateur vocal group called the Serenaders that also included double bassist Jimmy Bowen and guitarist Donny Lanier; in 1955, the trio rechristened themselves the Rhythm Orchids, so named after their purple shirts they wore on-stage. With the addition of drummer Don Mills, who first joined the Rhythm Orchids on-stage with nothing more than a pair of brushes and a cardboard box, the group's melancholy country covers acquired a swinging backbeat approximating something close to rock & roll, much to the delight of the assembled barroom patrons. Following a local gig, the Rhythm Orchids met Sun Records star Roy Orbison, who recommended they travel to Clovis, New Mexico to record with producer Norman Petty (better known for his subsequent work that other famous Texan rock & roller, the aforementioned Buddy Holly). Mills opted to return to school, so the remaining trio recruited drummer Dave Alldred to play on two Petty-produced tracks: "Party Doll" -- written by Knox at the age of 12 -- and "I'm Stickin' With You," the latter featuring Bowen on lead vocals. After handing Petty their $60.00 studio fee, the Rhythm Orchids returned to West Texas with acetates in hand; Blue Moon Records owner Chester Oliver soon pressed 500 copies, and when the initial run sold out -- thanks in large part to heavy airplay from Amarillo radio personality Dean Kelly -- the band founded its own label, Triple D, to issue 2500 more. Lanier's sister, a fashion model living in New York City, then passed a copy to music publisher Phil Kahl, and with partner Morris Levy, Kahl licensed the single for national release via the newly formed Roulette label. Roulette split the original Petty session into two separate releases, with Bowen's new "Everlovin'" backing "I'm Stickin' With You" on Roulette (4001) and "My Baby's Gone" appended to "Party Doll" (Roulette 4002); while the former reached the Top 20, selling in excess of a million copies, "Party Doll" proved far more successful, remaining on the best-seller list for 23 weeks and topping radio play lists coast-to-coast following a memorable rendition on television's Ed Sullivan Show. From that point forward, Knox and Bowen pursued simultaneous solo careers for Roulette, although both continued employing the Rhythm Orchids as their backing unit. The follow-up to "Party Doll," "Rock Your Little Baby to Sleep" -- credited to "Lieutenant" Buddy Knox, a nod to the singer's then-ongoing six-month stint in the U.S. Army Tank Corps -- cracked the Top 30 in mid-1957 and again sold a million copies, as did its follow-up, "Hula Love." Knox's vocal style on these seminal efforts was clean and natural, the band's rockabilly sound more a jaunty, skittering update of traditional country than a white derivation of R&B, à la Holly -- in fact, by the end of 1957 Knox was arguably the bigger star of the two, headlining DJ Alan Freed's national package tours and even appearing in the feature film Jamboree. He closed out the year with the rave-ups "Devil Woman" and "Swingin' Daddy," followed in mid-1958 by a cover of Ruth Brown's "Somebody Touched Me" that reached number 22 on the pop charts. The subsequent "That's Why I Cry" went nowhere, however, and with 1959's "I Think I'm Going to Kill Myself" -- a song banned on many radio stations -- Knox & the Rhythm Orchids scored their final Hot 100 entry. After two additional singles for Roulette -- "Taste of the Blues" and 1960s "Long Lonely Nights" -- Knox left the label following a dispute about royalty payments, and he signed as a solo act with Liberty, where producer Snuff Garrett softened his approach considerably. His Liberty debut "Lovey Dovey" reached number 25 in 1961, but Garrett's teen idol-inspired production did not serve Knox well, and successive efforts like "Ling-Ting-Tong" (his final pop chart entry, at number 65), "Three-Eyed Man," "Dear Abby" and "All Time Loser" muted the dynamic presence of his earliest, finest music. Knox cut nine singles for Liberty in all before teaming with longtime A&R exec and promoter Ray Ruff to form the Ruff label, issuing just one single for the company, 1964's "Jo Ann," before signing on with Reprise for a pair of little-heard efforts, 1965's "Livin' in a House Full of Love" and the following year's "Love Has Many Ways." With a move to United Artists, Knox teamed with house producer Bob Montgomery to become a full-fledged country artist -- when "Gypsy Man" hit the Nashville charts in 1968, it proved his final chart hit. Knox ultimately moved to Vancouver, opening a nightclub called the Purple Steer and maintaining a relentless tour schedule throughout the 1970s and 1980s; on February 5, 1999, the longtime smoker was told he had contracted inoperable lung cancer -- just nine days later, he was dead. ~ Jason Ankeny

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

From our tour. Impressions of our American tourist:

We walked over the bridge where I got a better photo of the Kremlin to enter metro station to travel the one stop back to the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. This cathedral has a fascinating story.  It is Moscow's largest Orthodox cathedral.  It was built between 1839-1883 as a memorial to those who fell fighting Napoleon's army in the War of 1812.

At its entry, the marble walls are covered with inscribed names of those whose lives were lost.  For more than a century, it was the city's largest single structure, dominating the city skyline.  In 1931, a few seconds demolished what had taken 50 years to build, following Stalin's orders.

The marble from the church and other valued materials and objects were stripped and removed to be used elsewhere, such as for creating art in the Metro stations.  During Khrushchev's time, one of the world's largest outdoor swimming pools was built.

In recent years, the decision was made to rebuild the Cathedral; this time it took only 5 years at a cost of $150 million.  While the city provided most of the funding, when the decision to rebuild was announced, the rubles poured in from the general population.  Once again, photos were not allowed, but my friend bought a booklet, and she kindly let me use it so you can see its elaborate interior.

What you probably DO know about this cathedral is that the Russian punk band Pussy Riot performed a protest concert inside the church in 2012, resulting in their arrest and jail time for 3 of its members.

After my friend selected her icon from the gift shop, it was time to bid our favorite Muscovite guide farewell. Our Moscow guide has restored my faith in her generation.  So wise and compassionate she is.  She was extremely perceptive about our preferences and needs.

As my friend noted to me last night after we got back to our room, there wasn't a problem our guide didn't solve with calm and timely effectiveness.  After she presented both of us with gifts tied with satin ribbon, she walked us across the plaza in front of the cathedral to our waiting cab.  She told my friend that she reminded her of her own "Baba" and that she would send my friend a picture of her to show the resemblance.

Even with this affection on her part toward my friend, I know our guide would have delivered the same excellent guide service to us, topped with abundant grace and sensitivity.  These characteristics are a part of her inner soul.  Our positive regard of Moscow is because of our guide.

What you get:
