Carnegie Mellon University Campus Visit

Campus Tour Led by our Tartan Ambassadors, the Campus Tour will allow you to explore our beautiful campus with our Tartan Ambassadors. During this walking tour, you'll get an insider's perspective on student life while seeing classrooms, laboratories, traditions and unique campus architecture. The Campus Tour lasts approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes and is not paired with any other event. Admission Counseling Session

An Admission Counseling Session with the Office of Admission isn't an interview, but is rather an informal conversation with an admission counselor. A counseling session allows rising high school juniors and seniors to seek guidance or ask questions of the Office of Admission. Our intention is to assist students who are approaching the time of application, who have questions about Carnegie Mellon's unique colleges/programs, as well as the admission process.   We only encourage students with specific questions about Carnegie Mellon or the admission process to register for an admission counseling session. Admission counseling sessions last approximately 20-30 minutes and are not paired with any other event. Please note that not all of the above visit experiences are available each day.

OPRF senior Maxine Gimbal with her instrument, a double bass.

It is going to be a summer of music and travel for an Oak Park and River Forest High School senior who was selected to be a part of a national orchestra at Carnegie Hall.

Maxine Gimbel, a senior at OPRF, will be taking her love of music on the road with the 2024 National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America as the orchestra travels throughout the summer on its South American tour.

Gimbel, who has played the double bass for the past six years, began her music journey with the violin but switched to the bigger string instrument in middle school.

“I thought it was cool,” Gimbel said. “I thought it was interesting looking. It started as not a serious choice, but I fell in love with the bass and really got into practicing, especially during Covid.”

As the 18-year-old got better at the instrument, the fun only grew, she said.

At OPRF, Gimbel has been part of the concert orchestra and the symphony orchestra for the past three years.

“I like how in music there is always more to add on, more to explore, and more to improve on,” Gimbel said. “In any excerpt from any piece there are a million different ways to play it, a million different ways to feel the music. A lot of the technical stuff, you can work on. I feel like it is endless in the different things you can do to make things better.”

For the NYO-USA, Gimbel sent in audition recordings of herself playing solo pieces and included an essay as part of her application. For her audition, Gimbel played the “Double Bass Concerto” by Johann Baptist Vanhal and “Cello Suite No.1” by Johann Sebastian Bach, better known as the “Prelude.”

Gimbel said she was also playing those pieces for her college admission auditions so the timing lined up very well. Gimbel said she will be pursuing a performance major in college.

The audition paid off as Gimbel was chosen to be part of the NYO-USA.

“It is really exciting, I am the only kid from Illinois, so I am excited to represent the state and meet people that play my instrument from all over the country, which I don’t get to do ever,” Gimbel said. “It is a really cool opportunity.”

Carnegie Hall announced their chosen 103 young musicians in early March. They range between the ages of 16 to 19 years old and hail from 34 states as well as the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

In the press release from Carnegie Hall Public Relations, the young musicians “have been recognized by Carnegie Hall as being among the finest players in the country following a comprehensive and highly selective audition process.”

The selected musicians will travel to New York and participate in an “intensive” two-week training residency at Purchase College, State University of New York.

“We are starting with a bit of a boot camp,” Gimbel said. “Where we rehearse for a couple days together, get used to the music together, and practice together.”

Gimbel said she is excited to also get to collaborate with other musicians from around the world before embarking on the tour.

Tour stops will include Montevideo and Rio de Janeiro, where they will be performing Barber’s Symphony No. 1, Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue,” Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Scheherazade,” and more.

Gimbel will also be participating in the newly announced summer concert festival World Orchestra Week, which aims to celebrate international youth orchestras and will take place Aug. 1-7. Alongside NYO-USA, the National Children’s Symphony of Venezuela, African United Youth Orchestra, Beijing Youth Symphony Orchestra, and the Afghan Youth Orchestra will be performing, led by various talented musicians including Marin Alsop, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Gustavo Dudamel, Lü Jia, Iván Fischer, Isata Kanneh-Mason, and Tiago Moreira da Silva.

The week-long festivities are set to be “one history-making week,” at Carnegie Hall where performers will share the stage with “today’s most internationally renowned conductors and soloists.”

Marion, Virginia and the birthplace of Mountain Dew

Start your history tour at the front door of the Smyth County Museum. At your feet, you’ll find one of 26 historic markers, set into the brick sidewalks of the Marion historic district.  Learn about the Marion origins of the soft drink Mountain Dew.

Originally created as a chaser for hard liquor, the world famous yellow-green beverage owes its existence to Mr. Bill Jones of the Tip Corporation, Marion.  Although other cities claim a stake in the soda’s beginnings, it was in Marion where Jones carefully tinkered with the formula, creating the caffeinated, carbonated lemon-lime flavor we know today, which he then sold to PepsiCo in the 1960s.

Stroll the downtown district and take a self-guided tour of the other historical markers.

The Lincoln Theatre, Southwest Virginia’s original “movie palace”

Charles C. Lincoln, Sr. was the wealthiest man in Marion, Virginia in the 1920s. After completion of The Lincoln Hotel (currently the General Francis Marion Hotel), Lincoln set his sights on bringing motion pictures to Marion. After returning from a business trip to Atlantic City, New Jersey, his mission was to replicate a grand movie palace that had captured his attention during his journey.

Lincoln sought the services of New York’s Novelty Art Studios to design the interior of the theatre, which was meant to evoke the feeling of walking into an ancient Mayan temple. Elaborate bas relief glyphs were designed to adorn the walls and proscenium, with hand-painted murals depicting scenes from American history, created by local artist Lola Poston. Sadly, “C.C.” Lincoln died of pneumonia on December 23, 1928, at the age of 63, and would never see the completion of his marvelous theatre. After much anticipation, The Lincoln Theatre officially opened on July 1, 1929, with Close Harmony starring Buddy Rogers and Nancy Carroll.

Hand painted murals at the Lincoln Theatre

In recent decades, passionate citizens raised money to fully restore the theatre to its 1920s glory, and reinvented the building as a performing arts venue, offering live music, film festivals and other events. The theatre is home to the beloved music program Song of the Mountains, broadcast internationally on PBS affiliates.

See a performance schedule at thelincoln.org , or call the box office to inquire about a guided tour.

Sallie’s Crying Tree and the African-American stories of Smyth County

An official Virginia historical marker relays the story of Sarah Elizabeth “Sallie” Adams (1841-1913), a young girl of about five when she, her mother, and other family members were sold at a slave auction at the Smyth County Courthouse. The results left the enslaved Sallie alone and a “body servant” to the sickly wife of Marion resident Thomas Thurman. Over the years, Sallie would express her grief by crying next to a white oak tree in the Thurman yard and “sometimes hug the tree and tell it about her burdens and sorrows.” The community named the oak “The Crying Tree.”

Find other historical markers at Mount Pleasant Methodist Church in Marion, and at Carnegie High School, the historically black high school where Katherine Johnson, who later made crucial contributions to the U.S. space program at NASA, taught for several years.

For even more important historical sites, read our blog post on Black History in Smyth County .

The Settlers Museum of Southwest Virginia, Atkins

The Settlers Museum of Southwest Virginia is a 67 acre open-air museum that tells the story of the people who settled in the mountains of Virginia and how its unique culture was developed. The Migration Story of the people who came to these mountains in the mid-1700s is a tale of two groups, the Scotch-Irish and the Germans, who carved their farms from the wilderness and formed the mountain culture. The farm, with its restored farmhouse and nine preserved outbuildings, and the 1894 schoolhouse provide a wonderful example of rural life in the late 19th century.

The grounds of the Settlers Museum are open year-round. Check the website for Visitor Center Hours, which may be affected by covid.

The Smyth County Octagon House

In 1856, Abijah Thomas was the foremost industrialist of Smyth County. When he decided to build a new home to reflect his status in the community, he bucked the architectural trends of the antebellum south, and commissioned an 8-sided brick mansion now known as The Octagon House .  Why an octagon? He may have been inspired by architect Orson Fowler, who proposed that octagonal homes would  be inexpensive, give excellent views from all sides and allow for better ventilation. Or as one other theory suggests, perhaps he just wanted to stand out from the crowd.

Today, visitors can tour the grounds, and read interpretive markers about the building’s history, and the Foundation’s plans for future rehabilitation.

The Konnarock Training School, now Blue Ridge Discovery Center

Built for the Women’s Missionary Society of the United Lutheran Church in America, the Konnarock Training School served as a private boarding school for girls and a public day school for children of underprivileged mountain families. The school’s curriculum focused on the cultural, spiritual, and social development of local students until the school closed in 1958.  The school, and adjoining medical clinic, are clad in unique bark shingles from the now-extinct American Chestnut.

The Konnarock Training School will now educate a new generation of young people, as the headquarters for the Blue Ridge Discovery Center , scheduled to open summer 2022.

The H.L. Bonham House and Visitor Center, Chilhowie

The H. L. Bonham House in the town of Chilhowie, Smyth County, was completed in 1911 as the home of Hezekiah Love Bonham, a regionally prominent farmer and businessman who pioneered innovations in the cultivation, processing, and sale of apples in southwest Virginia. Designed in the Colonial Revival style by C. B. Kearfott, Jr., the Bonham House features classical detailing and retains all interior wood finishes and decorative mantels. In the adjacent town of Chilhowie, Bonham built the only cold storage facility for apple grading and packaging between Roanoke and Bristol.

Now the official Smyth County Visitor Center, the Bonham House is open for visitors. Tour the exquisitely preserved rooms, and explore exhibits on the history of the Bonham Family and Smyth County.

Salt Park and “The Salt Capital of the Confederacy”

Learn about the fascinating role that salt played in the history of our country with a visit to Saltville, Virginia.  From prehistoric mammals drawn to the salt licks, to early industrial development, and a major strategic focus of the Civil War, salt was at the center of this town’s history.

Salt played such a crucial role in the Civil War that two battles were fought in Saltville. Union forces attempted to destroy the salt works, in an effort to starve the Confederate Army.  Simply put, before refrigeration, salt was the only way to preserve meat on a large scale, to feed a hungry army.

Visit the Salt Park to learn more about the salt making process, and view a brine pump, two replica cabins, and a reconstructed salt furnace with the original, antebellum evaporating pans.

Museum of the Middle Appalachians, Saltville

For a deeper dive into the history of Saltville and the region, pay a visit to the Museum of the Middle Appalachians .   Learn how geology has influenced the area’s history for millions of years. See the full-size replicas of ice age mammals that roamed the region over 15,000 years ago. View a display of Woodland Indian artifacts that includes an extensive collection of bead work and tools. In the Salt Theater see five video programs about the role of the Salt Works in the Civil War and the two battles fought at “The Salt Capital of the Confederacy”. Learn about Saltville’s industrial history, where the American chemical industry began, and life in the company town that developed around it.  Study a unique eco-system of a salt-water marsh located 400 miles from an ocean.

Hungry Mother State Park and Roosevelt’s New Deal

Hungry Mother State Park is one of the region’s most popular destinations for outdoor fun, but it’s also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

John D. and Mildred Lincoln donated 1,881 acres to the state for the establishment of a state park in Smyth County on Hungry Mother Creek in 1933. Later that year the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) began construction of Hungry Mother and five other state parks. Roads, trails, picnic areas, cabins, a restaurant, a bathhouse, a dam and a sanitation system were all built by the 600 CCC men at the park between 1933 and 1941. On June 15, 1936, the six-park Virginia State Park System was officially dedicated with public opening ceremonies at Hungry Mother State Park in Smyth County. More than 5,000 turned out to see the park as Governor George Peery and State Park Director Robert Burson officiated.

Learn more about the history of the park’s construction at the Discovery Center on Park Blvd, or stay in one of the original 1930s cabins, still available to rent today. We recommend booking early, as this popular park fills up quickly!

  • Police, deputies in West Baton Rouge tackle teen crime after deadly high school shooting

W EST BATON ROUGE PARISH, La. (BRPROUD) – After a student died in a Port Allen High School football game shooting , agencies in West Baton Rouge Parish formed a task force to tackle crimes involving juveniles.

WBRSO created the Organized Crime Task Force. It includes WBRSO along with police from the Port Allen, Brusly, and Addis Police Departments and the Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office.

“The Organized Crime Task Force was created to focus on juvenile-related crimes and being able to identify any potential threats,” said Sgt. Landon Groger, the public affairs coordinator for WBRSO. “This involves the men and women from all the agencies working together in identifying subjects and who they associate with.”

Groger said eight firearms have been seized, two of which were reported stolen. Arrests have been made with a range of charges. They include:

  • Illegal gun possession by a juvenile.
  • Simple battery.
  • Fleeing a cop.
  • Drug possession.
  • Justice obstruction.

Authorities have arrested four juveniles so far this year, Groger said. Sixty-nine were arrested in 2023.

Groger said law enforcement depends on community involvement from civic and faith-based groups, DARE programs and teachers.

“The public can continue to expect a strong enforcement on juvenile-related crimes as it will simply not be tolerated in West Baton Rouge Parish,” Groger said.

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Dr. Nathan Payant, a distinguished conductor, educator, and alumnus of Northern State University, is set to lead a performance at the legendary Carnegie Hall in New York City. The concert, scheduled for Saturday, April 13, will feature Dr. Payant conducting Dan Forrest's "LUX: The Dawn From On High" alongside nearly 70 singers from various ensembles, including his community choir, Laudamus Chamber Chorale, and the Concert Choir from Colorado State University.

Reflecting on his journey, Dr. Payant reminisced about his musical roots, crediting his parents for nurturing his early passion for music. His formative years at Redfield High School, under the mentorship of Northern graduates Dale Fiedler and Clark Lunstrum, further ignited his love for music and paved the way for his academic pursuit at Northern State University.

"My time at Northern was truly transformative," said Dr. Payant, who graduated in 2003 with a bachelor's degree in music education. "The guidance and support I received from influential professors such as Dr. Timothy Woods, Dr. Alan LaFave, Dr. Allan Jacobson, Dr. William Wieland, and many more laid the foundation for my career in music education and conducting."

Dr. Payant's dedication to music education has been exemplified through his teaching roles at Colorado State University, where he currently serves as a full-time instructor, and his directorship of Laudamus Chamber Chorale and the music program at First United Methodist Church in Fort Collins. He is also sings professionally with the Colorado Bach Ensemble.

The opportunity to conduct at Carnegie Hall marks a pinnacle moment in Dr. Payant's career. "Leading a performance at Carnegie Hall is truly a dream come true," he said. "It's an honor to share this experience with my students and fellow musicians, and I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to showcase their talent on such a prestigious stage."

Preparations for the concert have been underway since last May, with Dr. Payant meticulously studying the score and rehearsing with his ensembles. Despite the challenges posed by the ongoing pandemic, Dr. Payant remains undeterred, embracing this opportunity to showcase the talent and dedication of his students.

Looking ahead, Dr. Payant is committed to continuing his pursuit of excellence in music education and conducting. While he anticipates future projects, including an upcoming tour in Austria and performances of Fauré's Requiem and Dan Forrest's Requiem, he remains focused on cherishing the present moment and the profound impact of this Carnegie Hall performance on his career trajectory.

Dr. Payant attributes much of his success to his formative years at Northern State University, where he found inspiration, mentorship, and lifelong friendships. "I am incredibly grateful for the invaluable experiences I had at Northern," he said. "They have shaped me into the educator and musician I am today."

The Morning

A crisis of school absences.

Fewer children are attending school, across rich and poor districts.

Empty seats and desks in a classroom.

By Sarah Mervosh

A few years ago, a troubling phenomenon began to spread in U.S. education: Students were not showing up to school.

This was not particularly surprising. Schools had shut down in the spring of 2020, at the start of the pandemic, and some did not fully reopen until fall 2021. Quarantines for Covid symptoms and exposures were still common. It would take time, many thought, to re-establish daily routines.

What is surprising is how little the numbers have budged since, an issue my colleague Francesca Paris and I explore in depth in a new article published today .

Before the pandemic, about 15 percent of U.S. students were chronically absent, which typically means missing 18 days of the school year, for any reason. By the 2021-22 school year, that number had skyrocketed to 28 percent of students. Last school year, the most recent for which national estimates are available, it held stubbornly at 26 percent.

In interviews, many educators say the problem is continuing this school year.

Perhaps most strikingly, absenteeism has increased across demographic groups, according to research by Nat Malkus, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. Students are missing more school in districts rich and poor, big and small.

Increase in chronic absenteeism

By length of school closures

Even the length of school closures during the pandemic was not a particularly useful predictor of absenteeism. On average, districts that were closed longest have experienced similar increases as those that opened sooner.

What is going on here?

I spoke with school leaders, counselors, researchers and parents. They offered many reasons for the absences: illness, mental health, transportation problems. But underlying it all is a fundamental shift in the value that families place on school, and in the culture of education during the pandemic.

“Our relationship with school became optional,” said Katie Rosanbalm, a psychologist and associate research professor at Duke University.

A cultural shift

To some degree, this is a problem facing society at large since the pandemic. Anyone who works in an office with a flexible remote-work policy will be familiar with the feeling: You diligently show up, but your co-workers aren’t there. What’s the point?

Something similar may be going on in schools.

Though school buildings are open, classes are in person and sports and other extracurricular activities are back in full, the stability of school seems to have shifted.

For one thing, teachers are also missing more school , often because of professional burnout or child care challenges — or because, since the pandemic, more people are actually staying home when they’re sick.

Some schools have kept their pandemic policies around online class work, giving the illusion that in-person attendance is not necessary.

And widespread absenteeism means less stability about which friends and classmates will be there. This can beget more absenteeism. For example, research has found that when 10 percent of a student’s classmates are absent on a given day, that student is nearly 20 percent more likely to be absent the following day. “We are seeing disengagement spreading,” said Michael A. Gottfried, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania who has studied this issue.

Sign of other problems

This cultural shift is not simply a hit to perfect attendance records.

The share of students missing many days of school helps explain why U.S. students, overall, are nowhere close to making up their learning losses from the pandemic . Students who are behind academically may resist going to school, but missing school also sets them further back. These effects are especially pernicious for low-income students, who lost more ground during the pandemic and who are more negatively affected by chronic absence.

Absenteeism is also closely linked to other challenges schools have faced since the pandemic, including a rise in student anxiety and behavioral problems.

“The pandemic increased stress in every way in our lives, but it really embedded ourselves in our stress response system — fight, flight or freeze,” Dr. Rosanbalm, the Duke psychologist, said.

An increase in behavioral problems in schools is an example of the “fight” response, she said. On the other hand, she added, “flight is absenteeism.”

Meet the high school metro wrestler of the year: quin morgan of mounds view.

Save for a setback in the finale, the recently completed wrestling season was everything Mounds View senior Quin Morgan had dreamed it would be.

Morgan, a senior 215-pounder and team captain, was the sparkplug for the Mustangs' undefeated march to the Class 3A championship match, where they lost to St. Michael-Albertville, and followed it up with a 50-0 individual season and a career-capping Class 3A individual championship.

carnegie high school tour

He is the Star Tribune's Metro Wrestler of the Year.

The progeny of Minnesota wrestling royalty — his father, Marty, was an NCAA Division I champion at 177 pounds in 1991 while at Minnesota, and uncles John and Gordy both wrestled in the Olympics — Quin, the youngest of three wrestling brothers, reached the summit of the prep wrestling world in his final season.

"I knew I would win the state championship," said Quin, his voice tinged with confidence but without a hint of arrogance.

He has the background, the drive and the role models to succeed.

"Wrestling is the most important thing in my family. Of course, family comes first, but when we're all sitting around, we're always talking about wrestling," he said. "It's about all I can think about. I love the grind. I love that the hard work you put in pays off."

The season was the best in Mounds View history but came with disappointment because the Mustangs didn't win the state title. Morgan is not one to linger on the past.

"I was really proud of what was accomplished this season. We reached every one of the goals we set," Morgan said. "We did it with a really great group of guys, and they couldn't have performed better."

Morgan is spending his spring training at PINnacle Wrestling School, preparing for national tournaments in Fargo and Las Vegas. His next step will be wrestling for national power South Dakota State. His ultimate goal?

"I want to be an NCAA champion," he said.

Like his father. With good reason.

"My dad is my hero," he said.
