Carnival Cruise Line promises loyalty program changes

C ruise line loyalty programs drive repeat business and even a tiny change can outrage passengers. Royal Caribbean, for example, has to limit access to its Crown Lounges on select sailings when too many top-tier customers are onboard.

In most cases, you can't expand the lounge so on a President's Cruise, a special casino cruise, or a Transatlantic sailing, the cruise line has to limit access. That change only happens rarely and while people don't like not getting a perk they have earned, most are understanding.

Related: Why Carnival, Royal Caribbean don't offer key entertainment option

Permanent changes, however, can lead to passengers losing cherished benefits even if they gain others. Celebrity Cruises, a Royal Caribbean-owned brand, still shows on its website that certain higher levels of its casino loyalty program get access to its suite lounge. The problem is they don't and haven't for many years, but people who earn those levels and see the perk on the list are quite reasonably upset.

While Royal Caribbean has hinted at changes to its Crown & Anchor loyalty program, Carnival has shared that it's currently reevaluating its own. That means changes are coming, but before they do, the cruise line's brand ambassador, John Heald, both slapped back at some of his Facebook followers, and promised he would address their concerns.

Carnival made a loyalty pin change

Every cruise line's loyalty program has different tiers. Carnival's VIFP loyalty program starts at Blue on your first sailing and Red after that. At Gold passengers get a free bottle of water in their cabin.

You move up in tiers by sailing with points being awarded for nights cruised. Unlike Royal Caribbean's program, which offers more points for solo cruisers and suite passengers, Carnival's is one point per night no matter what.

The higher levels of the VIFP program, Gold and Platinum, come with a perk that many passengers like, a custom pin on each cruise. Those pins are "redeemable at the Photo Gallery no later than two days before the end of the cruise," Carnival shares on its website.

That's where some passengers took issue with the cruise line and Heald explained the policy.

"Before I open my eye pad on the plane to watch some downloaded episodes of 'Little House on Cleveland Prairie' and nibble on my $9 airport sandwich which has some pink meat in it I would like to say a little something to our fabulous Diamond and Platinum guests," he wrote. "The reason we ask Diamond and Platinum guests to collect their gift and pin from the Pixels gallery is because we have, in the past, found that people sometimes leave the pin and gift in the cabin. Plus it is what we have done since Covid."

Heald, it should be noted, never directly mentions brand names and is playful when he talks about what hotel he's staying in or, in this case, his tablet. He did push back on one charge.

"It is not a 'slap in the face for your loyal guests' to have to collect them rather than have them delivered. I read these comments now and then and the hostility behind the words posted is quite astonishing," he added.

Heald will ask the "beards"

The brand ambassador jointly calls Carnival's executives the "beards." It's meant as a term of endearment as the brand is led by its unbearded President Christine Duffy. Heald did promise to share the passenger feedback with his bosses, but stopped short of promising a change.

"Let’s see what we do when we announce the new loyalty program by the end of this year and I will ask if we can return to delivering anything we offer. No promises but I will try," he posted.

Nearly 2,000 people commented on Heald's post. Most were supportive.

"It’s all about perspective. When my sister in law got her status, I went with her and took pictures of her picking up her gift. We had fun with it. Just have fun, people. It is the fun ship," Melissa Dodd wrote.

Beth McDonald had a similary practical take on having to pick up the pin.

"I have no problem going to Pixels and getting my pin and gift. You probably walk by there several times a day. I love collecting my pins! I have found many uses for the gifts I get," she wrote.

Some of Heald's followers understand both points of view.

"It's not a big deal to pick these things up. It was just more special to walk into your cabin and see them waiting for you," posted Florence Thomsen Hobson.

"I can’t lie, I liked having it delivered but I also keep every pin and gift. So, I understand why the change was made, for Covid protocols and for eliminating waste. Besides, having to go get it gives me an excuse to leave the casino," added Laura K. Holiday.

Carnival Freedom's next two sailings canceled after funnel fire, second within 2 years

carnival cruise news update

A fire in the exhaust funnel of the Carnival Freedom this weekend has disrupted a cruise for the second time in less than two years — and will mean that the Florida-based ship's next two sailings are canceled.

Damage to the funnel will require the cancellation of Carnival's next two cruises out of Port Canaveral, which were scheduled to depart Monday and Friday.

There were about 3,700 passengers onboard the ship when the fire occured. And the two upcoming sailings, which were canceled, likely would have had a similar passenger count amid the busy Spring Break season.

Carnival initially had said it expected no changes in its upcoming cruises, but on Sunday afternoon said the cancellations would be required.

"Regrettably, the damage is more than we first thought, and will require an immediate repair to stabilize the funnel, resulting in the cancellation of the March 25 and March 29 cruises from Port Canaveral," according to a statement issued by Matt Lupoli, Carnival Cruise Line's senior manager of public relations. "The funnel has been stabilized for the ship’s return to Port Canaveral overnight to disembark guests, and then it will go to the Freeport shipyard on Monday afternoon to begin the required repairs."

Carnival said it made the decision after "our technical team completed a thorough assessment" during the ship’s visit Sunday to Freeport in the Bahamas.

In the statement, Carnival said: "We sincerely regret the impact to our embarking guests, as we know they have been looking forward to their spring break vacation. We are providing all guests on both canceled cruises a full refund and a 100% future cruise credit, so they can come back and enjoy a future cruise with us. We also greatly appreciate the terrific guests who are currently sailing with us, for their outstanding cooperation and support."

In a Facebook post, Carnival's widely followed brand ambassador, John Heald, conceded that many people who booked one of the canceled cruises are "feeling very disappointed," and he apologized for the turn of events.

But, Heald added that he wanted to assure affected passengers that, "when you rebook, using your full refund and your 100% future cruise credit, that the crew will be standing by to give you all the fun you deserve."

More than 500 people responded to the post, with many saying they thought Carnival was generous with the compensation offer. But some people who said they were on the cruise that experienced the fire said they thought Carnival should have done more for the people who were on the ship.

Carnival said the fire was confined to the funnel area. The cruise line said there are no reports of injuries to passengers. Two firefighting crew members were treated for minor smoke inhalation.

Carnival said that, at about 3:15 p.m. Saturday, the Carnival Freedom reported a fire on the port side of the ship’s exhaust funnel. The ship was 20 miles off Eleuthera Island, Bahamas, heading to Freeport after a canceled call to the Carnival private island of Princess Cays due to adverse weather.

"The ship’s fire response team was quickly activated, and the ship’s captain also turned the vessel towards the heavy rain in the area to maximize the efforts to put out the flames," an earlier Carnival statement said. "Eyewitnesses reported the possibility of a lightning strike, and that is being investigated, but cannot yet be confirmed."

By 5:20 p.m. Saturday, the fire was extinguished.

How safe are cruise stops? Travel advisories are only one marker for destinations

Carnival said the ship's captain made multiple announcements to passengers and crew, and advised all but essential safety personnel to stay away from balconies and all open decks.

The port-side portion of the funnel had fallen onto Deck 10, and the firefighting response put out any flames.

The U.S. Coast Guard has been notified of the fire, and Carnival activated its incident response team to support the ship’s crew.

Carnival said there were no other operational issues with the ship’s systems, and the ship, which was on a four-night cruise, was visiting Freeport on Sunday.

A cruise ship funnel generally serves as a smokestack to lift emissions above the deck, thus away from passengers and crew.

On Saturday evening, "Carnival Freedom guests enjoyed the Elegant Night dinner as planned, and, with the exception of the open decks, all areas of the ship are fully functioning," Carnival said in its statement.

The Carnival Freedom's next voyage was scheduled to depart from Port Canaveral on Monday afternoon on a five-night Eastern Caribbean cruise. That cruise had port-of-call stops scheduled at Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic and at Grand Turk Island in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

But that sailing and a Friday sailing both have been canceled. Friday's five-night sailing also was scheduled to stop at those two ports of call, but in reverse order.

In May 2022 , a fire broke out in the funnel area of the Carnival Freedom while it was docked in Grand Turk. Carnival then canceled three scheduled sailings of the Carnival Freedom out of Port Canaveral because of the need to repair the ship's fire damage at a shipyard in Grand Bahama.

More recently, in October 2023, the Carnival Freedom debuted a new iconic winged funnel after returning from a 16-day dry-dock refurbishment in Cadiz, Spain.

Carnival Legend Arrives in Europe for Summer Program

  • April 29, 2024

Carnival Legend

After departing from Norfolk on a trans-Atlantic crossing in mid-April, the Carnival Legend recently arrived in Europe for a summer program.

The 12-night repositioning voyage featured visits to destinations in Portugal and Spain before ending in Barcelona on April 27.

Before kicking off its summer program, the 2,100-guest ship sailed to the Chantier Naval de Marseille in France, where it is now undergoing a major refurbishment.

In addition to technical maintenance and class work, the Legend is expected to see updates to its public areas and staterooms.

While details of the project are still to be confirmed, the ship may receive new venues, including the Heroes Tribute Bar & Lounge, which is being rolled out to more vessels in Carnival’s fleet.

Once the work is completed, the Carnival Legend is set to kick off a five-month program in Europe that includes itineraries in Northern Europe and the Mediterranean.

The first sailing of the season is an eight-night cruise to Italy, France, Spain, and Malta that sails roundtrip from Barcelona.

Scheduled to depart on May 30, the itinerary features visits to Toulon, Livorno, Civitavecchia, Naples, Messina and Valletta.

In June, the Carnival Legend repositions to Northern Europe for a series of cruises departing from Dover, England.

Before returning to the Mediterranean in late August, the ship offers nine- to 12-night itineraries to the British Isles, Iceland, Scandinavia, the North Sea and more.

Scheduled to return to North America in early November, the Legend is also set to sail a series of ten-night cruises to the Greek Isles, Italy and Turkey between September and October.

The ship is then set to offer a trans-Atlantic crossing to Florida before kicking off its 2024-25 winter program in Tampa.

Part of Carnival Cruise Line’s four-ship Spirit Class, the Carnival Legend was built by Kvaerner Masa-Yards in Finland and originally entered service in 2002 .
