Speaking of amenities, make sure you understand what you'll get as part of your fare and which extras will come with an additional cost. For example, most cruises offer drink packages for alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, but a few have drink stations where you can get complimentary lemonade, coffee and tea. Other amenities that might be important to you are Wi-Fi, spa services, babysitting, fitness classes, and upgraded dining experiences. You can usually get a decent discount if you sign up for an amenities package before you sail, so keep an eye out for promotions in the months leading up to your sailing.

When you take a cruise, it's almost always expected that you'll tip the crew members who have attended to your needs while onboard: your cabin steward ( who probably leaves your towels folded into fun shapes every night ), your servers at your nightly meals, and the head waiter. Cruise lines have a recommended gratuity to cover all three of those staff members, usually $15-$20 per traveler, per day; the total gratuity amount may be charged automatically to your account, or you may be given envelopes to make cash payments.

While it usually isn't mandatory to pay those gratuities - you can ask to have them removed if they're applied automatically, especially if you've received poor service - it's typically considered in poor taste not to tip at the suggested levels (because crew members' salaries, much like servers at your local restaurant, are based on the expectation of tips paid by guests). And, if you receive service that goes above and beyond, adding to the recommended gratuity is always appreciated. Be aware that tips for bartenders, poolside servers, and professional services provided in the spa or elsewhere are not included in the daily suggested gratuity and may be charged automatically at the time of service.

Now that you have a good overview of the cruising experience, which cruise line should you choose? Beyond the points we already covered, here are a few additional criteria that might make it easier to pick:

• Embarkation port. You could get a great deal on a cruise, but what will it cost you to get to the port? That could involve airfare, an overnight stay or two in a nearby hotel (so that you're less likely to be affected by travel delays), and transportation from the airport or hotel to the port. This is especially true if you're taking a cruise that departs from an international destination.
• Perks for repeat cruisers. Like frequent flyer programs on airlines, most cruise lines offer benefits the more you sail. If you find yourself absolutely loving cruise vacations, it can be advantageous to put all of your eggs in one basket, so to speak. Rewards programs can include casino benefits, complimentary meals at the upgraded dining experiences, exclusive sail-away parties with free cocktails and tchotchkes, early-access booking on future cruises, and much more.
• Reputation. It's a really smart idea to see what other travelers have said about their overall experience with a cruise line before booking your trip. The ads on TV may make that private island look amazing, but someone who's been there might point out that you'll pay extra to get on that waterslide. Or, previous cruisers could tell you that despite having several formal nights on the schedule, a particular cruise line has no problem with people showing up to dinner in flip-flops and swimsuit coverups. Norwegian is known for its vibrant and lively entertainment, including Broadway-style shows, comedy acts, live music performances, and thrilling water parks . The cruise line takes pride in its wide array of engaging activities, such as ropes courses, go-kart tracks, and laser tag, catering to families, couples, and thrill-seekers alike. Norwegian also offers Bingo, which Celebrity does not.

Below is the schedule for a recent sea day on Norwegian.

Celebrity focuses more on refined and sophisticated entertainment experiences. Guests can enjoy live music, theater productions, and enrichment programs such as wellness programs and wine tastings, catering to those seeking a more relaxed and cultured onboard ambiance. Celebrity offers big-screen movies, which Norwegian does not.

Below is the schedule for a recent sea day on Celebrity.

Itineraries

Norwegian and Celebrity cover a vast range of destinations, providing travelers with exciting opportunities to explore different parts of the world.

Norwegian boasts a diverse selection of itineraries, including popular Caribbean destinations, Alaska’s stunning landscapes, and the enchanting Mediterranean. They often focus on providing flexibility and ample time at port, allowing guests to customize their shore excursions and explore independently.

Celebrity, while also offering similar destinations, places a strong emphasis on unique and immersive experiences. Their itineraries often feature overnight stays in iconic cities, extended hours in port, and exclusive shore excursions designed to showcase local culture and authentic experiences.

Below is a table comparing the destinations that Norwegian and Celebrity Cruises sail to. Note that they both sail to mostly the same destinations, with the exception that Celebrity also cruises to the Galapagos Islands, and Norwegian cruises to Antarctica.

The ports that each cruise line stops in at a particular destination may vary, however. For example, let’s look at the ports that both cruise lines sail to in Africa.

Norwegian sails to the southern part of Africa: Cape Town, South Africa; Mossel Bay, South Africa; Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha), South Africa; Richards Bay, South Africa; Maputo, Mozambique; Fort Dauphin (Toalagnaro), Madagascar; Pointe Des Galets, Reunion; and Port Louis, Mauritius.

Celebrity sails to the northern part of Africa: Alexandria, Egypt; Tangier, Morocco; and Casablanca, Morocco.

As you can see, although both cruise lines sail to Africa, they have quite different itineraries. So, do your homework on the geography of the itineraries your chosen cruise line may sail.

Some cruisers prefer larger ships while others prefer smaller, more intimate ships. Although both cruise lines have a wide range of sizes in their fleets, there are differences.

Overall, Norwegian has larger ships by passenger capacity, with an average of 2,984 passengers per ship. Celebrity has three small expedition ships, which I removed from the calculation, and they have an average of 2,708 passengers per ship.

Crew-to-Passenger Ratio

The crew-to-passenger ratio plays a crucial role in providing personalized service and attention to detail.

Norwegian typically has a higher passenger capacity, resulting in a slightly lower crew-to-passenger ratio. However, Norwegian strives to ensure exceptional service by training their crew to provide a friendly and efficient experience.

Celebrity, with a reputation for attentive and personalized service, maintains a slightly higher crew-to-passenger ratio, allowing for a slightly more intimate and tailored experience.

Doing the math, the average crew-to-passenger ratio for Celebrity Cruises is approximately 1 crew member for every 2.08 passengers. For Norwegian Cruise Line, the average crew-to-passenger ratio is 1 crew member for every 2.26 passengers. The numbers used to calculate these ratios are shown above.

Suite Experience

Both Norwegian and Celebrity offer luxurious suite accommodations for passengers seeking an elevated experience.

Norwegian’s suite experience, known as The Haven , provides exclusive access to a private dining venue— the Haven Restaurant —as well as lounges, pools, and butler service.

Celebrity’s suite experience, called The Retreat , offers a private sundeck, lounge, and private restaurant— Luminae —along with butler service, providing a truly indulgent escape for discerning travelers.

One significant difference between the two experiences is that Norwegian’s Haven is predominantly in an enclave, where most of its cabins and all of its amenities are in an exclusive section of the ship that you need a Haven keycard to gain entrance to. Celebrity’s Retreat cabins are scattered over several decks, while the amenities are grouped near each other on high decks.

In terms of price, Norwegian tends to be more budget-friendly compared to Celebrity.

Norwegian offers a variety of cruise options at different price points, including affordable rates for budget-conscious travelers. They often provide promotional deals, discounted fares, and inclusive packages that can help you save money on your cruise vacation.

Celebrity caters to a slightly higher-end market, with a focus on providing a more upscale and refined experience. As a result, their prices are generally higher than those of Norwegian, reflecting the enhanced amenities and services they offer, but they often offer promotional deals.

Head-to-Head Price Comparison

Out of curiosity, I chose a similar itinerary on the same week on similar ships on both cruise lines and priced it out.  Here are the parameters I used:

• Duration: Seven days
• Departing from: Round-trip Seattle
• Ports: Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, and Victoria
• Date: Departing the first week of September 2024
• Ship: One of the newest in the fleet
• Cabins compared: Lowest-price inside cabin and lowest-price suites-category cabin
• Amenities: All-inclusive package
• Passengers: Two people

Celebrity Cabin

Celebrity Edge Inside Cabin includes:

• Classic Beverage package
• Room gratuities added

Cabin size:  181 square feet

Pricing: For two people

Norwegian Cabin

Norwegian Bliss Inside Cabin includes:

• Unlimited open bar
• $50 off excursions for one guest
• 2 nights specialty dining
• Wifi (130 minutes)
• Bar and dining gratuities added

Cabin size : 135 square feet

Celebrity Suite

Retreat Sky Suite includes:

• Premium Beverage package
• Unlimited Premium Wifi
• Retreat amenities, plus a butler team

Cabin size:   398 square feet

Norwegian Suite

Haven Courtyard Penthouse with Balcony includes:

• Free Wifi (130 minutes)
• Haven amenities, plus a butler

Cabin size : 324 square feet

As you can see, Celebrity is a bit more expensive than Norwegian. However, their staterooms are much more spacious. Norwegian adds 2 nights of specialty dining, while Celebrity offers significantly more onboard credit for suites. Both Celebrity and Norwegian charge extra per day for gratuities. Norwegian charges extra for gratuities for the beverage package and specialty dining, which I took into consideration when doing the calculations to provide an even comparison.

Also, Norwegian assigns a butler to you (although they also have other cabins they serve), while Celebrity assigns you a butler team. In reality, though, Celebrity’s cabin attendant performs a lot of the services that a butler used to.

Booking Amenities

Both cruise lines offer convenient online booking platforms, making it easy for travelers to research and reserve their desired itineraries. Both also have mobile apps that are helpful during your cruise.

Norwegian provides a user-friendly website where you can explore different cruise options, select cabin categories, and customize your vacation. They often include additional perks, such as onboard credits, drink packages, or specialty dining reservations as part of their promotional offers or bundled packages known as Free at Sea .

Celebrity also offers a seamless online booking process, allowing guests to choose their desired staterooms, dining time preferences, and additional amenities. Celebrity is known for its truly all-inclusive pricing option, which provides guests with various perks and benefits such as unlimited beverage packages, onboard credit, and complimentary gratuities.

Cruise-only pricing that doesn’t include a beverage package, Wifi, onboard credit, or other benefits is also available with both cruise lines.

If you are a gambler, you’ll notice significant differences between the casinos on Celebrity and Norwegian. Yes, they both have the requisite slot machines and table games, and they both have loyalty programs, but the way the casinos are run is where the differences lie.

Norwegian’s casinos are smoking with non-smoking sections. Their casinos may stay open all night, however, depending on how close they are to port (casinos must close within a certain distance of port). They also have frequent tournaments for slots, blackjack, and Texas Hold’em, including annual tournaments with large purses. Players receive drink cards based on their tier in the casino’s loyalty program.

Celebrity’s casinos are all non-smoking, and close by 1:00 a.m. at the latest and reopen at 9:00 a.m. unless they’re in port. Unlike Norwegian’s, they never stay open all night. Celebrity has tournaments, but they’re not as frequent and are very small. Well drinks are free for all active players in the casino.

Overall Value

Determining the overall value of a cruise experience involves considering various factors, as we’ve discussed above, and both cruise lines offer exceptional value. Compared to a stay in a fine hotel, adding in your dining and beverage costs, plus entertainment, a cruise is a bargain.

Norwegian includes a wide range of dining choices, numerous onboard activities, and a vibrant entertainment scene. Their ships often feature innovative amenities such as water parks, go-kart tracks, and Broadway-style shows, ensuring guests have a memorable time onboard.

While Celebrity may have higher prices, they place an emphasis on gourmet dining, enrichment programs, luxurious accommodations, and attentive service. Their ships are known for their modern design, impressive artwork, and spacious staterooms.

What I Like About Each Cruise Line

My husband and I swing back and forth between Celebrity and Norwegian, both liking and disliking aspects of each line over the other.

Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity’s ships are easier to navigate, being somewhat smaller, and have a solarium, an adults-only covered area with a pool and hot tubs in a serene environment. Their buffet has more international options, and the food is better.

Also, the suites restaurant, Luminae , has better service, with a dedicated team caring for you as you dine rather than just a waiter. Their concierge service is better, with friendly concierges eager to help you in any way they can. The Retreat suites on Edge-class ships also have a control for the lighting and drapes, which you can even access through your app. Your butler delivers treats, but they’re spare, with the Retreat wanting suite guests to take advantage of an afternoon snack buffet available in the Retreat Lounge.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian has more fun activities, such as their Galaxy Pavilion on Norwegian Joy with a Formula 1 race car simulator that my husband loves, plus go-karts. The Getaway and Breakaway have ropes courses.

The suite experience is slightly better overall because of the Haven’s enclave concept, keeping most of the amenities together in an exclusive area. The snacks delivered by your butler are almost too much each day, but give you something to nosh on after a long evening when you return to your cabin . The Haven restaurant has a breakfast buffet, which is wonderful when you’re in a hurry and just want to pick up a few things before you head out on an excursion. On the Joy, the Horizon Lounge in the Haven is a well-kept secret in the bow of the ship. It has amazing views, an espresso machine, and all-day snacks available.

Final Thoughts on Norwegian Vs. Celebrity

Choosing the perfect cruise line for your next vacation is a highly personal decision that depends on your preferences, interests, and desired experience. Norwegian Cruise Line and Celebrity Cruises both offer exceptional journeys with their own distinctive features. Whether you prefer a relaxed and casual ambiance or a more refined, elegant experience, you’re sure to have an amazing vacation.

Designed to provide an upgraded cruise experience, the Premium Access Package includes premium Wi-Fi in addition to several other enticing perks.

Celebrity’s Cafe al Bacio: Delicious Coffee at Sea

As you may already know, Celebrity Cruises is known for its luxurious amenities and top-notch service. And if you’re someone who loves coffee (who doesn’t, right?), then you’re going to adore Café al Bacio.

I sailed on 3 of the newest cruise ships from Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, and Celebrity and the best was also the biggest ship. Here's how they compare.

• I've sailed on Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas, Norwegian's Prima, and Celebrity's Apex.
• The Wonder of the Seas is now my favorite ship with the Prima as a close second.

I've been on media sailings on four cruise ships across four cruise lines and one was the clear winner.

Ironically, I'm not shy about my disdain for cruises.

I don't like feeling stuck and bored on a ship with nowhere to go.

I'm definitely a picky cruise goer. But only one ship fielded less complaints than the others.

From 2021 to 2022, I sailed on Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas, Norwegian's Prima, Celebrity's Apex, and Margaritaville at Sea's Paradise.

And the Wonder of the Seas mega cruise ship was by far my favorite vessel.

Whenever I go on a cruise, I judge my experience based on my stateroom, the common spaces and activities, the food and beverage program, and the nighttime entertainment.

Here's how all four ships compared to each other. And here's why the Wonder of the Seas is the only one I'll be recommending to traveling families.

Let's start with the staterooms. Despite my previous compliments, Royal Caribbean's mega-ship didn't have my favorite stateroom.

The 1,188-foot-long mega vessel is currently the largest cruise ship in operation.

Its 2,867 staterooms can accommodate up to 7,084 guests.

However, my balcony stateroom left much to be desired.

It had all the bare essentials and minimal decor. There wasn't even a separate body wash and shampoo in the bathroom.

The poorly designed sink didn't catch all of the water while I washed my hands. And overall, the bathroom felt cramped.

At least the stateroom had the most storage I had ever seen. And the couch and bed were both pretty comfortable.

Plus, it’s hard to complain about these balcony views.

But at a starting rate of $1,400 for 2023 itineraries, I was hoping for some more decor and luxurious amenities.

However, I wasn't as disappointed by my stateroom aboard the Norwegian Prima.

The 965-foot-long ship can accommodate 3,215 guests in its 1,646 staterooms.

I stayed in the 230-square-foot family-balcony stateroom during my four-night sailing.

And despite its small square footage, it felt like this hotel room at sea could've rivaled a Manhattan studio apartment.

There was plenty of storage. Not as much as my stateroom on the Wonder of the Seas but still more than I needed to use.

The ambient lighting provided a warm glow that made the hotel room at sea feel like home. And the bathroom was spacious and well-designed.

The amenities — like the couch, balcony, and desk — were about the same as Royal Caribbean's.

This hotel room at sea will start at $991 for spring 2023 five-to-seven-day round trips from New York City to Bermuda.

When I sailed on the Celebrity Apex in 2021, it was the cruise line's newest ship and my first time on a cruise as an adult.

The 1,004-foot-long vessel can accommodate a little over 2,900 guests in its 1,467 staterooms.

I stayed in the 243-square-foot Infinite Veranda stateroom and was surprised by how spacious and plush the small room felt.

The veranda, lined with floor-to-ceiling windows, was the perfect private nook during sunny and breezy days out at sea.

The bed was one of the most comfortable I've slept on aboard a cruise ship.

And the bathroom was also fairly polished and spacious. I never felt too cramped. Overall, I have no complaints.

When I sailed in 2021, a stay in the stateroom for 2022 sailings started at $1,440, making this stateroom the most expensive on the list.

Of all three staterooms, Norwegian Prima's balcony stateroom was my favorite with Celebrity Apex's as a close second.

Both were spacious, modern, and well designed despite having a compact square-footage.

But the Prima's warm ambient lights and splashes of color made the hotel room at sea a clear winner.

Onto the onboard activities and common spaces. This is where the Wonder of the Seas really shines.

It's evident the cruise ship catered to families. And given its size, it should be no surprise that this vessel had the most amenities and activities I'd ever seen aboard a vessel.

Almost every section of the ship — called "neighborhoods — catered to travelers of all ages in some way.

Listing all of these amenities and activities would take too long. But some standout neighborhoods include Central Park, a peaceful outdoor walkway lined with plants, shopping, and restaurants …

… and Boardwalk, another open-air neighborhood designed to look like a real boardwalk with a carousel, hot dog stand, and candy store.

And we can't forget about the all-important pool deck. The one on the Wonder of the Seas is a colorful paradise for families.

There are three water slides, an outdoor water park for children, and multiple pools and hot tubs throughout the overwhelmingly bright space.

And the deck above this had even more activities including a mini-golf course, dry slide, zip line, and surf simulator. It's the only cruise ship on this list with the latter two activities.

And in my opinion, they epitomizes Royal Caribbean's goal of appealing to families.

The Norwegian Prima had similarly family-oriented activities including some I never expected to find on a cruise ship.

Like the Wonder of the Seas, there was a children's water park, although it wasn't as grand as Royal Caribbean's.

Families could also play mini golf and slide down the decks-long dry slide aboard the Prima.

But unlike the Wonder of the Seas, the ship also had a VR arcade, high-tech darts, a go-kart course, and the "Stadium" with outdoor activities like ping pong.

But its pool deck was far from exciting. At least there was a water slide.

But this deck wasn’t the only option for pool-side lounging. The ship also had a more peaceful 0.33-mile walkway with pools, lounge chairs, and daybeds.

Unlike Norwegian and Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises is actively trying to attract Gen X travelers, Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, Celebrity Cruises' CEO, told Insider in 2021. And this is definitely reflected in the ship

While the common spaces aboard Prima and Wonder of the Seas were playful and youthful, the Apex had a modern and polished flair akin to a new hotel.

Areas like the Rooftop Garden and Eden were sophisticated and some of the most beautiful spaces I've seen aboard a cruise ship.

But given the target demographic, there were no water slides or activities designed just for young children.

And while any Solarium with glass ceilings is luxurious, this one looked a bit dated.

However, it’s worth mentioning that the gym — lined with Pelotons — was fairly luxurious.

Of all the ships, Royal Caribbean's newest mega-ship had the most impressive amenities.

Its size definitely helps: The more space you have, the more amenities you can include.

There are enough activities to keep a family entertained for days at sea.

And even though the Norwegian Prima had a VR arcade and go-karting, the Wonder of the Seas' unique spaces made it a clear winner.

Onto dining. Royal Caribbean's giant cruise ship has over 20 dining venues. However, over half are specialty restaurants that come at an extra cost to travelers.

There were a handful of fun dining options like an outdoor build-your-own taco and burrito bar, a pizza shop, and an 18-seat restaurant.

But the best meal I had aboard the ship was the cruise ship buffet. There was something for everyone, including international dishes, classic favorites, and a seafood section. And the raw fresh was shockingly fresh.

However, I can't say the same for the two specialty dining restaurants I tried.

Hooked Seafood was satisfactory but not mind-blowing. And Mason Jar, a new-to-brand Southern restaurant with live music, served me unbearably dry chicken.

At least the new cruise ship had a diverse list of drinking venues.

There's a watering hole operated by robots, another designed to look like an old English pub, and a bar on a platform that moved vertically between decks.

Like the cruise ship’s amenities and activities, there was something for every drinker aboard the ship.

But the Norwegian Prima had the most unique restaurant options of all the ships I sailed on.

There were 14 dining options. Half were specialty restaurants.

But my favorite meals were at the complimentary food hall with touch screen ordering pads at every table, the first I've ever seen on a cruise ship.

Here, diners could choose between 11 restaurants including an Indian eatery, an international noodle bar concept, and a rotisserie option.

And to my surprise, almost everything I tried here was as good as the typical on-land options. I could've eaten every meal here.

The ship also had plenty of bars. In my opinion, the Metropolitan bar was its most unique concept.

Here, the zero-waste cocktails used liqueurs and syrups made from some of the ship's food scraps.

Cruise ships aren't known for being low-waste or great for the environment. And the bar only cut a tiny fraction of the ship's food waste. But at least the attempt was made.

There are 29 dining venues aboard the Celebrity Apex. Seven are specialty venues.

However, these options weren't too exciting. Most restaurants served either American or European cuisine with the exception of a raw bar with sushi and sashimi.

The meals on Apex were good at best. I didn't eat anything too memorable.

While Le Petit Chef and Family was fun and wholesome, the food was just satisfactory.

The Apex's target Gen X demographic is clear with its choice of bars.

There was a martini bar at the heart of the ship next to a craft beer and sports bar. These classy additions fit both the demographic and current drink trends.

But one of the most unique bars — and spaces in general — aboard the ship was the Magic Carpet, a bar and lounge on an open-aired platform that can rise and lower between decks.

It also doubles as a tender dock at ports of call.

Between the three ships, the Norwegian Prima's food and beverage program was my favorite.

Almost everything I ate at the digital food hall was delicious and it was fun seeing a modern concept on a cruise ship.

The Wonder of the Seas buffet comes in a close second. But the diversity of cuisines at Prima's food hall makes it a winner in my eyes.

However, Royal Caribbean's mega vessel shines again with the nighttime entertainment.

The ship's ice skating show wasn't my favorite although the venue itself is unique for a cruise ship.

But "inTENse" — an exciting outdoor show filled with divers, dancers, a tightrope walker, and synchronized swimmers — made up for the lackluster ice skating show.

Here, the two halves of the stage — and its performers — rose and sank into a pool.

I was fully engaged and enthralled during the show. And the outdoor venue was the best I've ever seen on a vessel.

Unlike the Wonder of the Seas, Prima's entertainment thrives on being recognizable. However, I wasn't able to take photos during the shows.

During my media sailing, the ship was showing its rendition of Broadway musical "Summer: The Donna Summer Musical," a contemporary tap dancing and beat boxing mashup "Noise Boys," and "The Price is Right Live" game show.

While I'm not a fan of musicals, the Prima's production of the Donna Summer Musical and "Noise Boys" were two of the most impressive productions I've seen on a ship …

… although it wasn't as entertaining as Royal Caribbean's "inTENse."

And "The Price is Right Live" was a surprising hit. It was as much a game show as it was an interactive comedic experience.

However, I don't have this high praise for the Celebrity Apex's show.

The nighttime performers aboard the Apex are undeniably talented but I wasn't amused by the acrobat and electric violin production. It was far from memorable and reminded me of a typical cruise ship performance.

Nothing compares to the Wonder of the Sea’s “inTENse” water show. It changed my perspective of cruise ship shows.

If it's not clear yet, this mega vessel is my favorite ship I've sailed on so far.

While the Norwegian Prima's stateroom and food options were superior, the common spaces and amenities aboard the Wonder of the Seas far outshined any other vessel.

And in my opinion, the amenities and activities are the most important part of a cruise ship. Travelers don't sail just to stay in their staterooms all day.

Neighborhoods like Central Park and the Boardwalk looked nothing like a cruise ship.

And I didn't have time to do every activity I wanted to during my two-night sailing, which is rare to say when you're stuck on a ship with nowhere to go.

Moving forward, it’ll be the only cruise ship I recommend to traveling families. But at least the Norwegian Prima is a close second.

Norwegian Overview

Norwegian Cruise Lines is a great choice for those looking to have a completely stress-free vacation. While cruising the sea, you won’t need to worry about strict dress codes or set dining times while still having plenty of activities to choose from.

With a 19-ship fleet, Norwegian Cruise Line sails worldwide, allowing travelers to choose itineraries from two to 21 days. Some destinations include Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, Europe, the Middle East, the Mediterranean, South America, and more.

While onboard, adults and kids alike can take their pick from an extensive list of activities. For adults, test your luck at the casino, see a broadway show, or have an intimate evening at an onboard lounge. Kids can play Wii on a two-story wall, play a game of bowling, or drive on a racetrack.

For dining, Norwegian Cruise Line prides itself on a “Freestyle Dining” experience. Passengers can choose from up to nine restaurants at any given time. In addition, of course, there is an extensive range of cuisines, so there is something for everyone.

With that said, Norwegian cruises are more geared toward families. So if you are looking for a romantic getaway or a honeymoon cruise , it may be better to look at an adult-only cruise line.

Celebrity Overview

On the other hand, Celebrity is known for its upscale design and Michelin-starred Chefs. Travelers can choose to cruise on a small ship with the Celebrity Xpedition, which holds 48 passengers or opt for a larger ship holding over 3,000 passengers.

Celebrity sails to the same destinations as Norwegian, but you can expect a more premium experience. With that, high-level customer service is expected as there is one crew member for every two guests. On some cruises, Norwegian can have one crew member for every three guests.

Travelers can choose itineraries ranging from three to 18 nights with various excursions and activities. While Celebrity may be deemed a more upscale cruise line, it still accommodates families and has the activities to back it up.

Like Norwegian, adults can go to shows, gamble at casinos, or have a romantic dinner for two. Kids and teens can play in the pool, watch a movie under the stars, join the camp at sea, and much more.

Celebrity cruises have been said to have some of the best food at sea. Passengers can make a reservation at a fine dining restaurant or just opt for a casual meal. In addition, adults can enjoy one of the largest and rarest wine selections in the cruise industry.

Celebrity is for both couples and families looking for modern luxury. However, Celebrity would be the better choice for solo or couples between the two cruise lines.

Norwegian vs. Celebrity: Cost

Since Celebrity is more upscale, passengers can expect to fork out more money than they would on a Norwegian cruise. Norwegian cruises can start at $200 a day for an interior room (no ocean view) and as much as $650 per day for a luxury suite.

Celebrity, on the other hand, is a little more expensive, with interior rooms starting at $235 per day on average. If you are looking to stay in a suite, prepare to pay close to $1000 per day.

However, with both of these cruise lines, you can still get rooms with ocean views at an affordable price. Of course, the time of year, the ship, and the itinerary duration all factor into the cost.

Norwegian vs. Celebrity Ships

Norwegian and Celebrity both have beautiful ships. The main difference is that Celebrity has smaller ship options ranging from 48 to 100 passengers . On the other hand, their large and mega ships can accommodate anywhere from 2,107 to 3,046 passengers.

There is only one way to cruise with Norwegian, and that’s with a lot of people. The Norwegian fleet can accommodate from 1,936 to a whopping 4,266 passengers.

It’s tough to say one has better ships than the other. Both cruise lines have mega-ships that have endless activities for everyone. But if you don’t want to escape the crowds, you may prefer one of Celebrity’s expedition ships.

Norwegian vs Celebrity Food & Drink

There are slight differences in terms of food and drink when aboard a Norwegian or Celebrity ship. Norwegian offers all-inclusive packages for a fee with unlimited alcohol, soft drinks, and meals. However, there can be added fees for specialty restaurants and drinks.

In comparison, Celebrity doesn’t have an upgrade option for all-inclusive packages, but they do have all-inclusive cruises that include drinks, meals, and tips. So while you will need to pay out of pocket for alcoholic drinks on some cruises, several dining options are still included in the fair.

In terms of cuisine, Celebrity takes the cake in fine dining. In 2022, Celebrity won Best Cruise Line for Food & Dining. Some of their notable restaurants that received high praise were the Tuscan and Normandie. As mentioned, Celebrity is also a wine lover’s dream and has the awards to prove it.

It’s not to say Norwegian doesn’t have great food because they do. Norwegian is known for having a wide range of food options and allowing guests to eat whenever they want. Passengers can choose to dine at grilles, buffets, cafes, and fine dining restaurants with no fixed dress code.

Norwegian vs. Celebrity: Itineraries

There aren’t a lot of differences between Norwegian and Celebrity cruises as they both sail to ports around the world. Both cruise lines offer itineraries to Alaska, Hawaii, the Caribbean, New Zealand, Europe, Asia, South America, and more. With that, passengers can choose from a wide variety of ports and excursions that best suites them.

There is a slight difference in the length of the itinerary. As mentioned earlier, Celebrity has cruise itineraries ranging from three to 18 days, whereas Norwegian offers cruises between two and 21 days.

Since costs can be similar, it’s best to shop both cruises and find an itinerary that fits your needs.

Norwegian vs. Celebrity: Activities

Activities are endless on both Norwegian and Celebrity cruises. You can expect a variety of activities for adults, families, and children.

Norwegian and Celebrity offers an array of activities, such as bowling alleys, arcades, video games, movies under the stars, water slides, swimming pools, spa treatments, casinos, and much more.

Activities that are included onboard will depend on the cruise you choose. For example, a family cruise will have different activities than if you were on an adult-only cruise.

Norwegian vs Celebrity: For Kids

Norwegian and Celebrity both offer programs and facilities for kids. Parents can bring children as young as six months on select cruises.

Both cruise lines have programs for kids and teens where they are supervised by counselors. Kids can participate in supervised activities such as sports, games, movies, and more.

If need be, childcare is offered for a fee on both cruise lines giving parents time to enjoy themselves.

Norwegian vs. Celebrity: Entertainment

While both cruise lines have a variety of entertainment, Norwegian is known for its world-class shows. Passengers can enjoy award-winning broadway shows such as Jersey Boys.

Nonetheless, you can expect entertainment on both cruise lines, such as comedy shows, musical performances, and live bands.

If entertainment is important to you, check what the specific cruise ship offers to decide which one is right for you.

Norwegian vs. Celebrity: Typical Clients

Both cruise lines cater to couples, families, and solo travelers. Neither of them has adult-only cruises; they have several adult-only activities and areas to escape.

Since Celebrity is considered more luxurious, couples may enjoy the atmosphere more as long as they are okay being around children.

On the other hand, Norwegian may appeal more to solo travelers who want to be on their own schedule. In addition, the freestyle dining experience may make it easier for solo travelers to dine without feeling awkward.

Norwegian vs. Celebrity: Final Verdict

It’s tough to say there is a clear winner between Norwegian and Celebrity. Both cruise lines have endless activities, entertainment, dining options, and more. However, Celebrity is known for its exquisite cuisine, whereas Norwegian has best-in-class entertainment.

While at times, Celebrity can be more expensive; you can find deals on both cruise lines. Ultimately, choosing between the two will come down to your preferences and what is most important to you.

Celebrity Cruises vs Norwegian Cruise Line: Which Is Best?

We recently sailed with both Celebrity Cruise and Norwegian Cruise Line just a few weeks apart and that gave us a great opportunity to compare and contrast the 2.

There is lots that we enjoy about both cruise lines and something we don’t like, as is the case with everything in life but just which line is more suited to our way of cruising and which is the best, Celebrity Cruises or Norwegian Cruise Line ?

To answer that question, we will look at what we believe makes up a cruise experience including Pre-Cruise, Check-In, Entertainment, Onboard Experience, Food & Drink, Itineraries and the Value of your cruise.

Celebrity Cruises vs Norwegian Cruise Line

This is something that isn’t particularly close as we are yet to have any issues with Celebrity whilst we continue to have problems with the landside operation of Norwegian.

Celebrity’s website and app makes it easy to sort out everything that you need to do including pre-purchasing any packages and excursions that you want and booking things such as table in pay or free restaurants.

The line also makes it easy to do all your pre-cruise requirements such as making final payment, picking your check-in time and completing your paperwork.

Many people watching this may think, well yes that is surly standard across everyone, but sadly that just isn’t the case and one line we have had numerous issues with in Norwegian.

In the past we have had issue trying to change a room and sorting check-in times but on our last cruise we had issues with just about every aspect of the pre-cruise experience.

To start with, we couldn’t actually book the cruise due to an error on the NCL website and struggled to book via phone, we then couldn’t book any excursions without difficulty and even trying to pay for the cruise was a struggle.

So, for this one, it isn’t really close as we give the up vote to Celebrity.

This is something that is often out of the control of the cruise line itself as so much of the check-in process is down to the port you depart from but there is lots that the line can control and for us, it has been in those bits that the main differences have been.

We have cruised from Seattle, Reykjavik and Southampton across our cruises with the 2 line and have had a decent experience at each.

Things were chaotic in Seattle but that was down to the poor organisation of the port authority themselves, so we cannot hold that against NCL .

As most will know, the check-in process is split into two parts when cruising: pre-check in and check in.

With the check in process arguably equally as good for both lines, it really comes down to the pre-check in for both and with us having the aforementioned issues with both the NCL website and app for pre-check in and with how easy the process has been for Celebrity, this is another one that we have to give to Celebrity.

Whilst not exactly check in related, a special mention should also be made about the fact that Celebrity allows you to go to your room as soon as you step onboard to drop off your carry-on luggage whilst NCL require you to walk around the ship with it until your room is ready.

When it comes to comparing entertainment, it is incredible difficult as its often depends on the ship you are sailing on rather than the line and no where is that better highlighted than with NCL .

Norwegian can offer some of the best entertainment out there and we were fortunate enough to experience onboard the Norwegian Bliss, but they have also made a lot of cutbacks in this area and during our last cruise with them, onboard the Norwegian Prima , we were less than impressed.

Norwegian must be one of the cruise lines with the widest differences in their entertainment offering, with their newer ships offering West End style full productions to go with comedians and singers that perform in the theatre and around the ship.

Whilst their smaller ships offer a more traditional experience of guest performer and in house performers offering shows in the main theatre as well as around the ship.

One big issue we had on our last journey was the lack of organisation in the entertainment on offer, where we weren’t told who would be performing where and when until the night before, which made it difficult to arrange around other plans.

The quality of any particular performer is a highly subjective thing, so we won’t use that for comparison but one thing we have found on Celebrity is that there is a lot more variety.

With NCL , you tend to only have a couple of different acts that stay with the ship throughout and put on many different shows throughout your getaway but with Celebrity we have found that alongside the house act, they have a big rotation of acts so that you can see a different one almost every night.

With the line, you also have a set time for acts happening around the ship, such as 7 and 9pm in the theatre and all the times for the week are available from day 1 on the app, so you can plan your time accordingly.

They also have more variety in the shows and whilst they don’t offer the big West End style shows which we do love, we have found that the overall experience when it comes to entertainment is much more to our style on Celebrity than NCL, so they get the upvote for this one.

The onboard experience can come down too many different things, including the ship you are sailing on, the length of your journey and where you are sailing and that make sit something else that is difficult to compare.

Thankfully, there are many things that stay the same across the lines fleet and we have also sailed on a variety of ships in similar areas.

Celebrity is a more premium line than when compared to NCL but there actually a lot more similarities than differences.

It is of course those differences that really make the difference to the experience’s cruisers have whilst on holiday.

NCL have a more relaxed attitude towards clothing restrictions as aside from a couple of speciality restaurants, you can where what you like in bars and restaurants- aside from the usual things such as bathing suits etc.

They don’t have things such as formal nights but, in many ways, it isn’t much similar to what you get on Celebrity where you will find more people dressing up on a night, but most will dress the same as most people on Norwegian, just the usual stuff you would where to go to your favourite restaurant or bar on land.

Celebrity do have their own version of formal nights, called evening chic, which is based around dressing up for you, so unless you really want to, you can forget about a full suit and dickie bow and think more about your wearing favourite shirt or dress.

Another big difference you tend to fins is that the clientele onboard Celebrity is slightly older, and things are more relaxed than on NCL ship, where when sailing on their bigger ships, you find a more family oriented cliental and a must busier experience.

NCL do like to promote themselves as been the line that lets you do what you want, when you want but our experience has often been far from that as with a few thousand fellow cruisers also trying to do what they want, when they want- you really need to plan and book ahead.

Our experience on Celebrity has actually been much more like what NCL aim for as with you knowing the times for things well in advance, you can tailor your days and nights around been where you want to be onboard.

The more relaxed nature of the onboard experience with Celebrity, especially in places such as the buffet and outside decks, which can be chaotic at best on NCL , fits our way of doing things better.

With all of that in mind, the onboard experience is something that we don’t really have an issue with but we do tend to find that the Celebrity experience suits me and wife better, so we have to give them the upvote for this one as well.

This is something that is important for us when sailing as having the chance to enjoy great meals and try new foods is all part of traveling for us.

When it comes to this subject, it is arguably the one that is the most subjective, so this is just based on our own personnel tastes and preferences.

Neither myself or my wife are alcohol drinkers either, so this won’t be based on things such as cocktails and spirits and that does play a big part in our vote for this one.

Whilst some NCL ships do have a Starbucks, let’s be honest and say that is not the greatest option and the drinks are only included in more premium drinks packages or as a pay extra add on.

When we first started cruising with NCL , the food was decent, nothing more, nothing less, but it has continued to go downhill to where we often don’t enjoy it.

On our last cruise, the buffet was incredibly limited it terms of options and variety and the food was incredibly bland.

It should be noted that the new Indulge Foodhall onboard the Prima -class of ships is a great addition and is the go to place for a quick bite.

The main dining room food on Norwegian has always been more Gastro Pub level rather than high class restaurant level and that has remained more consistent.

As you would likely expect from a line such as Celebrity, the dining experience can be a bit more upmarket and the quality is certainly much higher.

On shore days, we prefer to head to the buffet when back on board and whilst it is often just an easier option on Norwegian, we often enjoy the food in the Celebrity buffet and when they have special nights where they have local dishes on offer, it really does actually add to the holiday.

The MDR food on Celebrity is a higher standard than NCL but one big difference we have noticed across all ships is when it comes to deserts. On NCL they are often bland and somewhat rubbery whilst on Celebrity, they are often delicious to the point of been dangerous, as you just can’t stop with 1!

We have used specialty restaurants on a range of ships for both lines and have had what can only be described as a mixed experience, with some great experiences but sadly some really poor ones.

With all of that in mind, this one really isn’t too close as for us Celebrity wins hands down when it comes to the food and drink offers onboard.

This is arguably the hardest category to differentiate the two lines as when it comes to itineraries, they are just so similar.

Both have a big fleet of ships, not just in terms of numbers but in terms of the size of the ships and that gives them plenty of flexibility to offer cruises in most parts of the world and that is something both do a great job of.

Celebrity and NCL both offer plenty of sailing in key markets such as the Caribbean and the Mediterranean but they both also offer itineraries sailing in more remote places such as the Arctic and even Antarctica.

From a personal point of view, it is great to see them both offer more itineraries out of the UK which has included basing ships out of Southampton and as we prefer to sail repositioning routes , both also offer plenty of options there.

Where the differences in the 2 lines does happen in our experience when it comes to their itineraries is the amount of time you get in port and the opportunities for overnight stays.

Spending time exploring the ports we visit is the biggest part of a cruise holiday for us, so getting more time to experience is a huge plus and with some destinations really coming alive on a nighttime, having the chance to explore day and night is great.

Celebrity also don’t tend to have as many wasted ports as NCL , who often include out of way ports close to nothing on itineraries as the fees are cheaper.

With all of that in mind, this is going to go once again to Celebrity Cruises, but this one really is so tight it tends mostly on where you want to visit on a cruise.

Deciding on whether a cruise is good value is really difficult to do.

If a cruise was incredibly cheap but you only had an ok time, does that offer better value than a cruise you had to save up for year to book but then had the type of experience you will remember for ever?

For us, we would prefer to spend a bit more and have a great experience even if we had to save up that bit longer to be able to go on a cruise.

The base cost of a Celebrity ship is often higher than that of NCL but for us, you get so much more for your holiday, and you have a much better experience whilst away.

Our last experience of sailing with NCL was a frustrating one and lots of things with the line are just more difficult than they need to be whilst our experience of Celebrity has been much more straightforward, and we can simply relax and enjoy the holiday more.

That has a lot of value for us, as does the fact that you often get longer in port with Celebrity and more overnight stops to really make the most of time you have at the ports.

It is experiencing the ports we visit that really makes for a special holiday and whilst the extra time you often get with Celebrity is great, the line also often doesn’t have wasted ports, which is something we have experienced with NCL as they use ports such as Le Verdon .

Whilst both can offer good value on some cruises and poor value on some cruises, overall we feel that the Celebrity experience is much better value in the main so we will give them the upvote for this one as well.

So, after picking up a clean sweep, it will come as no surprise that, for us, Celebrity Cruises is the better cruise line when compared to the Norwegian Cruise Line .

Despite winning every category, a lot of them are quite close and on any given journey, the experience maybe different but that is something else that works in the favour of Celebrity of us as we find there product much more consistent.

Celebrity Edge vs Norwegian Encore

The Celebrity Edge was built in 2019. The Celebrity Edge is the first ship to feature the "Magic Carpet," a moving platform that makes using water tenders a breeze while in port, or adds outdoor dining space while at sea. This Edge-class of ship is known to feel quite different than the rest of the Celebrity fleet as it's less geared towards traditional cruise passengers. The Norwegian Encore was built in 2019.

The Edge is considered a medium size ship. Coming in at 1,004 feet long and 128 feet wide, it's roughly the length of 2.8 football fields, as wide as 2.4 tractor-trailers and the same height as a 16-story building. Compared to the Norwegian Encore, the Edge is 23% smaller in terms of overall tons.

Celebrity Edge holds 27% fewer passengers than the Encore based on double occupancy (two people per room). When you compare the total tonnage of the ship to the number of passengers, or what we call the "Space Ratio," the Edge has more space per person compared to the Encore. This means that you might have a bit more space to yourself on the ship, although there still could be some crowded areas like buffets, pools, etc.

Food is a big part of any cruise, and the ship you choose can make a huge difference in your food experience.

The Edge has 18 different dining options like Blu , Rooftop Garden Grill , and Eden Restaurant . Of those options, 8 are complementary, or included with your cruise fare. The other 10 options have an additional fee.

The Encore has 6 more dining venues. Some of its popular venues are Teppanyaki , Los Lobos , and American Diner . 9 of these restaurants are complementary and the other 15 have an additional fee.

If you like having a variety of places to eat, the Encore might be a better choice. It has 33% more dining options than the Edge.

If you're looking to avoid extra money while on board, the Edge might be a better choice then the Encore. More of the dining options are included in the base cruise fare, potentially saving you money.

In terms of drinks and cocktails, you have a variety of choices. Both ships serve the Coca-cola family of products. That means Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite and Barqs Root Beer, although the selection can vary by ship.

Nothing beats relaxing by a pool with a nice drink in hand as you feel the fresh sea breeze pass by you. The problem is that with thousands of people on a ship, there's not always room. If you want to spend all day for 7 days in a pool, a cruise isn't for you. You would have a much better bet choosing a resort with a huge pool complex. That being said, a quick dip in the pool can be nice on a hot day.

The Celebrity Edge has a total of 3 pools and 4 hot tubs. Tired of loud kids and splashing? 1 of the pools and 1 of the hot tubs are adults only. 1 of the pools and 1 of the hot tubs are exclusive access, which means there's either an extra charge to access them or you need to book a certain class of cabin to have access to them.

The Norwegian Encore has the same number of pools as the Edge and more hot tubs. There are more exclusive pools and hot tubs on the Encore. If you don't mind paying for exclusive access to areas in order to have less crowds, this might be a better choice.

Both ships have lots of activities to keep you busy throughout your cruise. Below you'll see a list of some of the major features on these ships. On the Edge, 67% of the activities below are included in the cruise fare. On the Encore, only 46% of the activities are included, meaning you might spend more money while on board.

Celebrity is a premium cruise line. Premium cruise lines typically offer upscale food, accommodations, and service. These typically cost about $150 - $400 per person per day.

Norwegian, on the other hand, is considered a mainstream cruise line. Mainstream cruise lines cater to a variety of guests, hoping to provide something for everyone. These typically cost about $100 - $350 per person per day.

Cruise pricing is dynamic and varies for each specific sailing based on factors such as departure point, ports of call, and time of year. To get a good idea of how the pricing compares, visit the cruise line's website to price out the separate cruises or consult a travel professional.

Another way to gauge the cost of a cruise is to consider how much you'll spend on board. Even though a lot is included in the base cruise fare, you may still spend money on things like spa treatments, specialty dining, drinks, and excursions. In addition, guests can also have to pay for things like gratuities and tips.

Typically guests can expect to spend about 25 - 40% of the cost of the cruise on onboard expenses. In other words, if the cruise fare is $1,000 per person, you might spend between $250 and $400 on extra expenses.

Celebrity Cruise Lines offers an "All Included" program. Guests who book a cruise using this promotion will have gratuities and alcohol included. Some sailings are available without this program so pay attention when booking. Typically prices are lower if they don't include "Always Included." The wifi and alcohol package are the base levels and can be upgraded for an additional cost.

Norwegian Cruise Line offers a Free at Sea fare. Through this program, guests receive free open bar, a discount on excursions, some free internet, and some meals at their specialty restaurants. If you book using this promotion, you'll be responsible for the gratuities on the dining and drink package. If you won't be using these options, booking a "sail away" rate that doesn't include the Free at Sea benefits is considerably cheaper. Also, most of these benefits are the base packages; you can spend more to upgrade to better alcoholic drinks or faster/more wifi.

It’s not every day a new cruise line arrives. The debut of the remarkable Explora I was a moment years in the making for Explora Journeys , the upstart luxury operator that aims to bring a European sensibility to the world of vacations at sea. So far, the project is a smashing success, thanks to the ship’s low-key vibe, standout food and beverage, and intriguing itineraries that visit in-demand ports in Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Caribbean. My own August 2023 trip on Explora I , from Copenhagen to Hamburg, Germany, included fulfilling visits to places such as Oslo and the town of Stavanger, Norway, a gateway to adventurous hiking with a postcard-perfect Old Town. The ship itself was also a destination, with its abundance of outdoor space — including an alfresco fitness center — and pools at seemingly every turn. The 461 suites, all of them with balconies, are filled with luxurious touches such as Frette linens and robes, heated marble floors, and Dyson hair dryers. But Explora I truly shines when it comes to food: During the week I was aboard, it was impossible to find a bad meal — and I was often astonished at the quality of, in particular, the pasta served in the Emporium Marketplace and the sushi on offer at Sakura, two of the nine restaurants aboard. The most ambitious of them all is Anthology, a rotating-chef concept that has seen a residency from seafood whiz Mario Ulaissi, known for his Michelin three-starred restaurant on Italy's Adriatic coast, and that recently welcomed Emma Bengtsson, from Aquavit , in New York City. Much has been made of Explora I ’s Rolex boutique — the first on any cruise ship — but for my money, the other shops on board were more interesting: The company has tapped family-owned businesses around the world to create capsule collections of resort wear, handbags, fragrances, sunglasses, and beautiful gifts that can’t be found elsewhere. Oceania Cruises’ Vista

The new Oceania Vista is in a class of its own; no really, it’s the first in Oceania Cruises ’ new Allura class. Of its 11 bars and restaurants, three are entirely new to the Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings–owned brand — including a high-end cocktail spot called Founders’ Bar, serving 26 intricate drinks that use house-made syrups and top-shelf booze like Whistle Pig and parsley-infused Grey Goose. As Oceania levels up, the cruise line has produced a ship that feels more like a floating resort than the vessels that came before. There’s pickleball; a health-conscious restaurant, Aquamar, serving made-to-order salads and pressed juices; and a coffee shop that looks like one in walking distance of my home in L.A. (marble counters, gold accents, leather bar stools) and pulls an espresso shot of similar quality. Vista has more suites than others in the Oceania fleet, too: There are 14 Oceania Suites (up to 1,200 square feet); eight Vista Suites (up to 1,850 square feet); and three Owner’s Suites with Ralph Lauren Home decor and two massive terraces (2,400 square feet). But the most hotel-like touch? A celebrity chef–driven restaurant, Toscana, where Giada De Laurentiis — the ship’s godmother — supplied two recipes for the menu. As someone who watched a lot of Everyday Italian in the early aughts, I was particularly excited to try her signature, Capri-inspired lemon spaghetti, and lemon-cream sauce with grilled shrimp and capers didn’t disappoint. Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Grandeur

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ sixth ship, the Seven Seas Grandeur , sailed its inaugural season in December, joining sibling ships Seven Seas Explorer and Seven Seas Splendor as the newest member of the luxury fleet. The cruise line is a favorite among T+L readers for its gorgeous ships and all-inclusive pricing that covers unlimited shore excursions, dining at specialty restaurants, and even round-trip airfare. Grandeur lives up to its name thanks to stunning, art-filled spaces designed by cruise ship interior experts Studio Dado: signature restaurant Compass Rose is enchanting with interiors inspired by a fairy-tale forest; the Observation Lounge sparkles with an undulating chandelier and swanky bar; and the $11,000-per-night Regent Suite has a private en suite spa and custom Treesse mini pool. As I boarded Grandeur for the ship’s inaugural sailing, I was mesmerized by the grand staircase and glittering chandelier. And with a maximum capacity of 744 guests, I found it easy to take time to myself in the myriad of quiet spots tucked throughout the ship, whether in the Serene Spa and Wellness area, in the Library, or on the Sports Deck overlooking the ocean. Seven restaurants include specialty steakhouse Prime 7, pan-Asian restaurant Pacific Rim, and breakfast and lunch buffet La Veranda, which refines the cruise buffet experience with daily specials like paella and sushi. Several bars and lounges, a pool and hot tubs, a casino, Broadway-style productions, and cooking classes at the Culinary Arts Kitchen make the ship a destination in itself, though guests will want to take advantage of those included excursions on Caribbean, Central American, North American, and European itineraries, ranging from seven to 16 nights, during the ship’s 2024 season. Silversea’s Silver Nova

Carrying 728 passengers, Silver Nova is big for the luxury sector, but boasts a hugely important metric: a capacious passenger space ratio — that is, the number of guests relative to the size of the ship. Simply put, this ship offers more elbow room per passenger than almost any other cruise vessel. Silver Nova is wrapped in glass, with an asymmetrical layout; the funnel is positioned off-center, so is the pool, offering an expansive, uncluttered pool deck. Many features of the brand-new ship recall previous Silversea successes, my favorite of which is the S.A.L.T. (Sea And Land Taste) program, expanded for Silver Nova . S.A.L.T. perks include a gorgeous, sea-facing lab for hands-on culinary lessons (at no additional cost), plus a new concept, the Chef’s Table, where an 11-course menu is prepared for just 24 diners. All facets of the S.A.L.T. ecosystem, including ingredients, a bar, lectures, and shore excursions, are keyed to the region Nova is sailing. While food is a drawing card for Silver Nova , accommodations also received a revamp. Tied to the theme of bringing the outside in, there are brilliant new suites found in the aft starboard corner of the ship, with wraparound balconies revealing a 270-degree view.  This is where you can tuck me in when I win the lottery and head off on a world cruise. But until then, Silver Nova will summer in Alaska and spend northern hemisphere winters in Australia and New Zealand, places where top-deck views should prove ceaselessly rewarding. Teen spaces on cruise ships foster friendships through games, music, events and more.

Cruises make the perfect family vacation, especially when traveling with teens. Teens can mix and mingle with others their age in teens-only clubs, play games, listen to music, or grab a pizza and watch a movie under the stars. If your tweens and teens need more action-packed fun to keep them entertained, some cruise ships act like floating amusement parks with zip lines, racetracks, roller coasters, ice skating rinks, laser tag, waterslides and more.

The following lines offer the best cruises for teens and tweens, along with their parents.

MSC Cruises offers plenty of family fun and activities for teens on its ships, including sports tournaments, waterslides and a family disco. On select ships, you'll also find the full-size MSC Formula Racer simulator, an interactive XD cinema, a virtual reality experience, zip lines and an arcade room. The Young Club programming by MSC Cruises offers daily activities for 12- to 14-year-old tweens, while teens 15 to 17 can participate in sports and dance competitions as well as video game tournaments at the Teen Club. Older kids can also participate in fun themed events, karaoke, piloting practice at the Drone Academy and flash mobs – and there's a teens-only disco.

On MSC Seascape , teens can stay busy in three new concept spaces. "Future" features a state-of-the-art technology area with the latest-generation consoles, VR and video screens for hours of entertainment. "Chill Out" is just as it sounds – a place to hang out, chat, and play foosball and pingpong. Meanwhile, "Music" is a dance club where kids can choose their own tunes and dance the night away with cool lighting and sound effects. If all that isn't enough, Robotron, the first of its kind at sea, is an amusement park-like ride that combines the thrill of a roller coaster with personalized music and lighting.

MSC World Europa boasts the largest and most engaging kids area in the fleet with an impressive 8,245 square feet of action-packed space. The new Teens Lab features an immersive area for teenagers with more than 20 of the latest consoles, seven VR stations and dozens of video games. Drone Academy 2.0 is a high-energy relay race for drones. There's even more onboard fun at Z Active, a sports program that offers basketball, football and zorb ball alongside two firsts for the line – pickleball and hoverboards. Teens can also take a spin on the bumper cars at the MSC Sportplex.

MSC Euribia – the line's newest ship, which set sail on its inaugural cruise in June 2023 – has a total of 7,500-plus square feet of space dedicated to kids ages 0 to 17. The new Teens Club Extra Space offers three different areas: the Young Club (ages 12 to 14), the Teens Club (15 to 17) and the Teens Lab (12 to 17). Some of the activities include those found on other MSC ships, such as Z Active, Drone Academy 2.0 and the MSC Dance Crew competition. Teens will also have access to new video games; pingpong; World Quest, an interactive game show based on trivia and geography; and Caravaggio, an immersive spy game show about an art heist.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line boasts a teens-only venue, Entourage, which caters to young adults 13 to 17 years old. This supervised space – available on 16 of the line's 19 ships – keeps teens busy in an adults-free lounge that's filled with video games, movies, music, arts and sports. Teen counselors on Norwegian Cruise Line plan activities and challenges to keep kids entertained throughout the cruise. A list of detailed activities is available on embarkation day so teens can plan out their schedule for the cruise.

Norwegian Prima , the first vessel in the Prima class, features many first-at-sea innovations perfect for entertaining families and energetic teens, including the three-level Prima Speedway. With cars reaching up to 30 miles per hour, this quarter-mile-long racetrack is one of the highest-rated attractions on Prima. Adventurous teens will also want to check out The Drop and The Rush. Billed as the fastest slides at sea, these chutes offer thrill-seekers a heart-pumping 10-story freefall plunge.

If that's not enough action, teens can also play The Bull's Eye, a classic game of darts that uses a video tracking system, or check out Tee Time for a pumped-up version of mini-golf set against a Las Vegas backdrop. In the Galaxy Pavilion, an indoor gaming complex, you'll find more than a dozen attractions, including immersive simulator experiences, escape rooms and the Topgolf Swing Suite – all of which are unique to Norwegian Prima. When it's time to cool off, the Tidal Wave waterslide is another first for the brand, letting guests ride inner tubes to catch the surf.

Norwegian Viva, the second vessel in the Prima class, is set to launch in August 2023. As the newest ship in NCL's fleet, Viva will also feature these exciting high-tech attractions, including Viva Speedway. If you and your teens are fans of the movie "Beetlejuice," you're in for a treat: The Broadway musical adaptation will debut on the new ship.

The line's Breakaway Plus class – Norwegian Escape , Joy , Bliss and Encore – is also popular with families as these ships offer plenty of activities and attractions suited for active teens, such as go-kart tracks, outdoor laser tag and VR games in the Galaxy Pavilion.

Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Line features two cool spaces dedicated to teens and tweens, who can hang out on comfy couches, watch shows or movies, and play video games. These hangouts, called Edge (for ages 11 to 14) and Vibe (ages 14 to 17), are available on all Disney Cruise Line ships.

On Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream , the space at Vibe also features a private outdoor deck with chaise lounges, wading pools, foosball and more. While indoors, teenagers can mingle with others their age, or just kick back and relax in individual nooks. There's a dance club area for karaoke contests, talent shows and dance competitions. The trendy indoor-outdoor space – at almost 9,000 square feet – is accessible with a teens-only card or DisneyBand+. On the new Disney Wish ship, Vibe has a French twist inspired by a Paris artist's loft with neon signs and funk pop art.

For tweens sailing on Disney Fantasy or Dream, Edge is a bright, loft-style gathering spot – located in the funnel – that has individual computer stations for gaming and a massive video wall for screening television, movies and games. There's also a lit-up dance floor for dance parties. Two nifty features of the space – and its location – are views of the pool decks below as well as three portholes that allow for glimpses of the riders on the water coaster, AquaDuck, as they zoom by.

On the first night of the cruise, kids receive information on what activities and events will be available during their vacation so they can curate a personalized entertainment itinerary. Some fun options throughout the week may include "Gotcha," a game of elimination where one teen will become the ultimate victor. For a special treat – and a bit of pampering – guests ages 13 to 17 won't want to miss an afternoon at Chill Spa, located inside Senses Spa & Salon.

Royal Caribbean International

The newly updated space for teens 13 to 17 years old on Royal Caribbean International vessels is hidden behind a secret speakeasy entrance. The dedicated venue, which has a gaming lounge and music, is a cozy place to hang out to meet other teens on the ship. There's also an outdoor patio where you can relax in the sun or chill out under the stars. Teens will find planned activities throughout the day at the lounge, including sports tournaments, a nightly teen disco and themed parties.

Social 100 is an exclusive new space for ages 13 to 17 on Wonder of the Seas . The outdoor space sits next to the waterslides and boasts a hot tub, lawn games, cozy seating, a selfie area, and a bar serving zero-proof cocktails and shakes. The indoor part of Social 100 features a gaming area, foosball tables, a vending machine and more comfortable spaces for teens to mingle.

Teens have plenty of activities they can do with their families on Royal Caribbean's ships, especially on the new Icon of the Seas, the first vessel in the Icon class. Slated for its inaugural sailing in January 2024, Wonder of the Seas will be the  world's largest cruise ship .  Cruisers of all ages will have endless opportunities for fun with more venues, activities and attractions than you've ever seen on a cruise ship.

Teens and their parents will appreciate Chill Island, a three-level pool deck with the first swim-up bar at sea. The new water park, Thrill Island, boasts six waterslides, including exciting firsts at sea, such as Pressure Drop, the first open freefall slide. If that's not enough to get the adrenaline pumping, teens can check out Crown's Edge – a combination thrill ride, skywalk and ropes course – or other Royal Caribbean favorites like Adrenaline Peak, Sports Court, the FlowRider surf simulator or the reimagined mini-golf course.

If you're hanging out in the new Surfside neighborhood on Icon, a dedicated space for young families, teens will have easy access to the supervised teens-only club, Social 020, from this open-air space.

When you head ashore to Perfect Day in CocoCay, one of the best  cruise line private islands , teen cruisers will find plenty of fun land-based activities like Thrill Waterpark and 1,600-foot-long zip lines. Be sure not to miss another thrilling experience: Up, Up and Away. The helium balloon ride soars 450 feet above the ground to the highest vantage point in the Bahamas , offering incredible panoramic views of the island and surrounding turquoise waters.

The Kids Club on Holland America Line offers a fun supervised program for 13- to 17-year-old guests in an adult-free zone known as The Loft. The name is in the process of changing to High Score!, and you'll already find the updated concept on Oosterdam and Eurodam . The line's other ships will change over to the new venue throughout 2024. High Score! is a family game room that serves as a secret getaway for teens by day. In the evenings, entire families can come to play skeeball, board games and join in other activities.

The teens-only space (during the day) on Holland America Line resembles a New York artists loft where kids can listen to music, watch movies, play games and meet and hang out with same-age cruisers. Programs and activities at the current space, The Loft, include themed events, karaoke, a teen disco and nighttime activities such as Poker Night and video game tournaments. Youths can also participate in pingpong, basketball and other teens-only sporting events. If they still need more entertainment to keep them busy, the Kids Club offers origami lessons and watercolor painting as well as competitions in "Mario Kart," air hockey, foosball, pinball and more.

Princess Cruises

The modern Beach House lounge is the go-to place for passengers ages 13 to 17 to socialize and meet others their age when sailing on a Princess Cruises ship. Fun activities for teens include late-night movies and tournaments where they can challenge their peers in video games or at air hockey, foosball and table tennis. For more energetic activities, join in the fun during indoor dodgeball and basketball games. Or, learn new dance moves from some of the dancers in the crew, then hit the dance floor for one of the competitions. At the "Rock the Boat Party," teenagers can dress up and party the night away with mocktails and new friends on the ship.

"Movies Under the Stars" is one of Princess' signature events. Guests can watch movies, sporting events and concerts while bundled up with cozy blankets on the pool deck outdoors. Teens will enjoy the complimentary snacks – not to mention the special movie nights designed with them in mind, such as "Scary Movie Night." You might even find teen makeovers and glitter tattoos some evenings on the ship.

The line's three newest ships – Discovery Princess , Enchanted Princess and Sky Princess – offer the most activities for teens, but all of the ships in the fleet host youth programs in partnership with Discovery, along with plenty of other family-friendly activities. These offerings include Discovery Family and Animal Planet shore excursions and onboard entertainment like "The Voice of the Ocean," a musical competition.

Parents will be able to keep track of their busy teens anywhere on the ship with the state-of-the-art Princess MedallionClass system. The quarter-size wearable medallion and accompanying app allow guests to personalize their itinerary and locate family members and friends on board.

When Sun Princess launches in February 2024, as the first vessel in the line's Sphere class, it will feature Park19. This top-deck family activity zone boasts many outdoor adventures, including Sea Breeze – the first Rollglider at sea. The ADA-accessible seated ride offers a hang-gliding experience with panoramic views of the ocean and ports of call. Families and teens can also check out the climbing obstacle course, cargo nets and lookout points. The ship also has a recreational court – which offers pingpong, shuffleboard, fitness classes and more – and a splash zone where you can cool off after all the outdoor activities.

Inside Sun Princess, tweens and teens will find two centers just for them: Neon Grove and The Underground. Both spaces offer cozy and colorful areas for young adults to hang out, socialize, and play video games on the PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. They'll also find foosball, skeeball and air hockey on top of planned activities like movie nights, dance parties and scavenger hunts.

Adventures by Disney

Adventures by Disney offers river and expedition cruises for the whole family; the itineraries span many choices and experiences for tweens and teens with a focus on culture, history, gastronomy and adventure. The river cruises are operated in partnership with AmaWaterways, while the expedition cruises are a collaboration with luxury French cruise line Ponant.

If you're sailing on the Adventures by Disney Rhine River Cruise itinerary, for example, guests can choose between various exciting excursions. While you're docked in Strasbourg, France , for the day, teen-friendly options include a tour of the Black Forest, complete with a toboggan run and a visit to a woodworking museum. Another choice here is to visit Germany's Europa-Park, a one-of-a-kind theme park located between the Black Forest and the Vosges Mountains. In Melk, Austria, on the Danube itinerary, families can go for a bike ride along the Danube River, hike to the castle in Dürnstein or visit a family-run apricot farm.

Another great feature of these cruises is that teens can opt to have dinner and evening get-togethers with same-age cruisers, so they don't have to dine with their parents or younger siblings every night. Adventure Guides also curate special activities for teens like game shows and pool parties.

In destinations like Antarctica, the Adriatic and the Galápagos Islands , expert naturalists lead tours during these bucket list trips. You might even find a bit of Disney storytelling woven into the presentations by the Adventure Guides.

Keep in mind if you have younger kids as well as teens that children need to be 5 or older to sail on the river cruises. For the Galápagos Islands expedition cruises, the minimum age for Junior Adventurers is 7, and for expeditions to the polar regions, kids need to be 10 years of age or older.

Carnival Celebration, which launched in November 2022, is the line's newest Excel-class ship. It features an expanded family and youth program, including its offerings for teens. The line also rolled out the new program fleetwide in spring 2023.

The Carnival Cruise Line teen programming at Circle "C" is for tweens ages 12 to 14, while Club O2 is for ages 15 to 17. In these venues you'll find entertainment like themed dance parties – and even a Carnival prom – as well as video games, movies and karaoke. Circle "C" stands for "Cruise, chill and connect," and that's what teens can do in this colorful, contemporary space with engaging counselors. New activities include anime drawing lessons and pop culture games at Circle "C." Older teens can foster new friendships while engaging in Japanese crafts and authentic tea ceremonies at Club O2.

Teens will appreciate Carnival's onboard water park, Waterworks, which includes a splash park and slides. Carnival Panorama even has the trampoline park Skyzone. Teenage passengers won't want to miss the first roller coaster at sea, BOLT, on Excel-class ships: Mardi Gras , Celebration and the upcoming Jubilee, scheduled to launch in December 2023.

For even more action, Vista-class ships feature Skyride. This two-lane, bike-like ride is suspended above the top deck of the ships and extends out over the ocean. This line's Teen Club features activities focused on kids 13 to 17. Some of the events offered for teens in the Camp at Sea program on Celebrity Cruises range from video game tournaments and sports competitions to culinary classes and silent disco parties. Teen cruisers can even book glass-blowing classes on Celebrity Solstice , Equinox and Eclipse . The offerings for young passengers are similar at either The Basement on Edge-series ships ( Edge , Apex , Beyond and Ascent, set to launch in November 2023) or at X Club on Solstice- and Millennium-class ships. Note, however, the line's three Galápagos expedition vessels do not have the teen venues. Families who need accessible accommodations, activities and programs will also find autism-friendly cruises on Celebrity.

When it comes to pampering, Celebrity's spas offer spa menus for 13- to 17-year-olds. Teens can book facials that are designed for young sensitive skin or have express pedicures and manicures. When you're ready to relax, schedule a two-by-two massage, where parents and kids can have a side-by-side treatment.

Celebrity also offers family-focused excursions that highlight cultural attractions, wildlife sightings and adventure. Some of these tours include seeing gentoo, king and Magellanic penguins in the Falkland Islands; taking an aerial tram through the treetop canopies of a rainforest in Costa Rica ; and going on a small culinary or sightseeing group excursion in Europe and other destinations around the world. Cunard Line

Cunard Line offers programs and activities for passengers ages 13 to 17 years old in its Teen Zone. This dedicated space is a place for teens to hang out with cruisers their own age and play video and team games, table tennis, and more. On the first day of the cruise, you'll find an activity program for young guests delivered to the stateroom so your teens can plan out their vacation experience, which may include entertaining theme days, deck sports, quizzes and dancing at the disco.

Teens on Cunard Line can participate in the activities around the ship, hit the pool for a dip, practice their putting or try their hand at croquet. When it comes to all-inclusive cruises, there are a few different options:

• Luxury cruise lines: All-inclusive cruise rates are available on luxury lines like Regent Seven Seas and Silversea. While more expensive than traditional cruise rates , the fares cover nearly everything, including door-to-door transfers, luxurious suite accommodations, specialty dining , premium alcoholic beverages and excursions. Plus, you don't need to show your cruise card every time you order a latte or a pre-dinner cocktail. You'll disembark the ship with very few, if any, additional charges on your final bill.
• Cruise lines with inclusive pricing: Alternatively, you can consider an upscale cruise line like Viking, which offers fares with more-inclusive pricing and some of the amenities found on board the fully inclusive lines. However, you'll still have to budget for a few expenses, such as immersive excursions and alcoholic beverages beyond wine or beer at lunch and dinner.

Cruise fares with these lines include many of the amenities and perks that you'll find with the all-inclusive cruises. However, you'll still need to budget for some expenses, such as alcoholic beverages, excursions and specialty dining, depending on the line.

Viking's ocean fleet of nine 930-passenger all-veranda ships offers a nearly all-inclusive experience for guests. The upscale Scandinavian-inspired ships feature king-bed staterooms and suites with many amenities, including luxurious linens and plush robes, 24-hour room service, and free Wi-Fi – plus an in-room minibar with soft drinks, water and snacks. Higher-category staterooms on Viking Ocean Cruises come with additional perks like priority dinner and spa reservations, early stateroom access, and a welcome bottle of Champagne.

Azamara's four upscale boutique ships carry a maximum of 702 guests and offer immersive experiences around the world, calling on many smaller, lesser-known ports. The line also boasts more than 380 overnights and 850 late nights in port, so guests can have dinner in town and experience more of the destination's local culture and cuisine.

Azamara's cruise fares include all meals (other than the specialty dining restaurants) with water, tea and coffee. A selection of complimentary wine, sparkling wine, beer and spirits is available throughout the voyage. If you'd like to enhance your onboard experience, Azamara offers inclusive "Experience More" packages that are discounted and based on the length of the voyage.

This value-add bundle includes $350 of onboard credit to use for shore excursions; unlimited Wi-Fi for one device; a drinks package featuring premium wines, spirits and bottled water; a $150 spa credit; and a dinner at the Chef's Table or a total of three nights of specialty dining at Prime C or Aqualina. Three bags of laundry are also included.

Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages' four superyacht-inspired ships are designed with adults in mind and feature 1,330 cabins (most with balconies) and 78 RockStar Quarters suites, where guests have access to Richard's Rooftop, an exclusive outdoor deck space. Oceania Cruises

Oceania's eight small luxury ships carry between 648 and 1,238 guests. The line's newest ship – Vista , the first Allura Class vessel – debuted in Rome in May 2023. The beautifully appointed vessel features four new dining concepts, spacious standard staterooms at 290-plus square feet in size, new Concierge Level veranda accommodations for solo cruisers, an elevated mixology program and more.

Oceania's culinary program is touted by the line as "The Finest Cuisine at Sea" under the tutelage of Jacques Pépin, executive culinary director and master chef. Complimentary specialty dining is included in cruise fares on Oceania sailings. Pricing also covers airfare, still and sparkling water, specialty teas and coffees, soft drinks, and Wi-Fi on the ship.

Oceania's "OLife Choice" package provides additional value to your cruise with 2-for-1 cruise fares, free round-trip airfare and airport transfers – plus one free amenity you'll choose out of eight complimentary shore excursions, a beverage package or up to $800 in shipboard credit.

Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity offers special rates and packages throughout the year that save money over a la carte pricing – and elevate your onboard experience to be more inclusive. You'll be able to access the best deal on the added perks if you book the upgraded package before you sail, saving up to 40 to 50 percent of the actual cost.

The line's "All-Included" package bundles the most popular add-ons for cruisers: a standard beverage package for alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks, unlimited basic Wi-Fi, and gratuities for the staff and crew. Pricing depends on the stateroom or suite category and sailing.

There are other options when booking a cruise with Celebrity to create a more upscale and all-inclusive experience. Guests staying in all-suite The Retreat have exclusive access to a sundeck (on select ships), a lounge and Luminae – a private restaurant that features Global Culinary Ambassador Daniel Boulud at the helm. Guests of The Retreat booking the "All-Included" package receive a premium beverage package, premium unlimited Wi-Fi, gratuities and an onboard credit.

Norwegian also offers promotional fares and special deals throughout the year that feature similar amenities and perks to what you'll find on an all-inclusive cruise. The "Free at Sea" deal bundles discounts on the cruise, free specialty dining, unlimited open bar privileges, shore excursion credits, savings on Wi-Fi access, discounts on the third and fourth guests in the stateroom, and a 2-for-1 deal on airfare.

"Free at Sea Plus" takes the package up a notch with a more comprehensive beverage selection, including top-shelf cocktails, Champagne by the glass, bottles of select premium wines at dinner and signature Starbucks coffee drinks. The benefits vary depending on the length of the trip but include credits for shore excursions; the Signature Beverage Package; specialty dining at Tamarind, Pinnacle Grill or Canaletto; and a Wi-Fi Surf Package. Princess Cruises

"Princess Plus" and "Princess Premier" packages offer guests two options to upgrade their onboard amenities from the standard Princess Cruises plan, which covers accommodations, dining, entertainment and the line's signature MedallionClass experience.

"Princess Plus" perks include a beverage package with drinks up to $15 each, Wi-Fi on one device per guest, gratuities for the crew, two premium desserts a day (think hazelnut gelato at the onboard gelateria), two fitness classes per cruise (such as Pure Barre or YogaSix) and unlimited trips to the juice bar. The cost is $60 per day per person for this middle-tier package.

Additional benefits of the highest-tier option, at $80 per person per day, include the Premier Beverage Package, which covers drinks up to $20 each, and Wi-Fi for up to four devices per guest. Princess Cruises welcomes its biggest ship ever with help from a star

It took a star to welcome the sun.

The Sun Princess , that is.

Princess Cruises on Tuesday officially hailed the arrival of its newest megavessel — at 177,882 tons, its biggest ever —with the help of "Ted Lasso" star Hannah Waddingham.

The Emmy Award-winning actress and singer presided over a star-studded 19-minute christening ceremony in the ship's Princess Arena theater that included a traditional bottle breaking, with a twist.

Serving as the ship's godmother, Waddingham placed a triangular "sun ray" representing Sun Princess into a sun sculpture on stage to trigger the smashing of a huge bottle of Veuve Cliquot Champagne — a nebuchadnezzar that holds the equivalent of 20 traditional bottles — against the ship's hull.

"As much as theater ripples through my bloodstream, I have the strongest history of maritime in my family," a clearly proud Waddingham said moments before triggering the bottle smash.

She noted that her still-living, 107-year-old grandfather served on convoy ships crossing the Atlantic during World War II. She also grew up boating.

"It's in my blood and in my bones," she added.

Built at the giant Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy, Sun Princess is the most notable new Princess ship to debut in more than a decade. Capable of holding up to 5,189 passengers (a record for a Princess ship), it's not only significantly bigger than previous Princess ships but packed with more onboard venues.

The naming celebration came two months after Sun Princess began sailing for the first time with paying passengers, a debut that was unexpectedly delayed by 20 days due to construction issues.

"Sun Princess is incredible. It's the largest, most luxurious love boat ever," John Padgett, Princess president, said at the event, harking back to the line's long-standing tie to the hit television show "The Love Boat" that ran in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Three stars from the show — Ted Lange, Bernie Kopell and Jill Whelan, who played bartender Isaac Washington, ship's doctor Adam Bricker and captain's daughter Vicki Stubing, respectively — were in attendance at the event.

The "Love Boat" stars were seated just a couple rows behind Carnival Corporation chairman Micky Arison and CEO Josh Weinstein.

Carnival Corporation is the parent company of Princess Cruises.

Makoto Okuwa, a James Beard Foundation honoree who designed a sushi eatery for Sun Princess, and Dario Cecchini, a celebrity Italian butcher who created a meat-focused restaurant for the ship, were also in attendance. So was the Brazilian artist Romero Britto, who sat to the right of Arison. Britto's colorful, upbeat art is the theme for the ship's high-end restaurant, Love by Britto.

Other celebrities at the event included model and television personality Tyra Banks, wildlife show host Jeff Corwin, fashion designer and television host Randy Fenoli and mixologist Rob Floyd. British singer-songwriter Natasha Bedingfield performed her smash hit "Pocketful of Sunshine" among other hit songs on the top deck of the ship after the ceremony.

The biggest Princess ship ever

Under development for more than six years, Sun Princess is the first of the new Sphere Class of Princess vessels. The ships have been designed to be significantly bigger than previous Princess vessels and offer several new-for-the-line features.

Sun Princess is the first Princess ship with suites that come with exclusive access to a private restaurant, lounge and sun deck — part of an effort to draw more upscale customers to the brand.

Additionally, Sun Princess offers an innovative new type of "cabana cabin" on the ship's extra-wide 10th deck that features exclusive access to a private deck area. The top deck of the ship also received some unusual-for-Princess sizzle. Passengers will find a glass-dome-topped pool area that transforms into a nightspot after the sun goes down.

Other differences between Sun Princess and earlier Princess ships include the lack of a buffet restaurant on its main pool deck. But don't worry, buffet lovers: There still is a buffetlike venue on the ship. Called The Eatery, it's eight decks below the pool deck, closer to the ship's central piazza and just off its outside promenade.

The ship's main theater, the Princess Arena, also has a new look. Its new-for-Princess, in-the-round shape can be converted into a more traditional proscenium-type theater or a keyhole-type theater to allow for different types of productions.

Among other standout venues, Sun Princess features a secret hideaway for magical performances designed in partnership with the Magic Castle performance venue in Los Angeles.

Princess also has revamped its main dining room program with the debut of Sun Princess. It now offers three distinct options for cruisers in its main dining rooms, ranging from a traditional fixed seating experience to a casual, come-when-you-want option that includes quick-served meals and even breakfast for dinner .

The arrival of Sun Princess marks the first time Princess has launched a new class of ship in nearly 11 years. With its debut, Princess now has 16 vessels in its fleet that collectively have room for about 50,000 passengers. That makes Princess the world's fifth-biggest cruise line, behind Royal Caribbean , Carnival Cruise Line , MSC Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line .

Sun Princess is initially sailing in Europe through the fall. It'll then reposition to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for voyages to the Caribbean. Fares start at $577 per person, not including taxes and fees, for a seven-night Caribbean sailing.

A second ship in the new Sphere Class series, to be called Star Princess, is on order from the Fincantieri shipyard for delivery in 2025. Its first voyage is scheduled for Aug. 4, 2025, and will take place in the Mediterranean.

My husband and I took a seven night cruise last week from NYC to Bermuda on the Norwegian Dawn. We are elite members of Celebrity's Captains Club and this was our first experience with Norwegian.

It was a seven night cruise and we ate at a different restaurant on the ship every night, two were in their main dining rooms (Aqua and Venetian) which do not charge an extra fee. Our meals in their main dining rooms were excellent. One night I had lamb chops and the other night I had surf and turf. The quality of the meat for both of these meals was superior to Celebrity's main dining room. On the other five nights we ate in an Italian Restaurant, a Tex Mex Restaurant, a French Restaurant, a steak house, and an Asian Restaurant. Their French Restaurant was better than Celebrity's specialty restaurant, their steak house was comparable, and the other specialty restaurants were only average and not as good as the ship's main restaurants.

We ate at either 7:00 PM or 7:30 PM every night, without a wait, which I prefer to either early or late seating on Celebrity.

The entertainment on this ship was better than on any other cruise we have been on which includes Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, Holland America, and Carnival.

There was live music all over the ship at any time during the evening and some of these venues included a dance floor. The only disadvantage over Celebrity was their lack of classical music.

Embarkation and disembarkation went very smoothly and was efficient. For disembarkation you received a schedule of when each color coded tag was scheduled to leave the ship. Then you went to the main reception area and selected your own tags based on when you wanted to get off the ship. I have never seen this system before and thought it was a great idea.

Our cabin was a mini suite which was 235 Sf in addition to a nice sized balcony. This is just slightly smaller than Celebrity's sky suites but significantly larger than their concierge class cabins. It had a very nice bathroom which included a bathtub, as well as a separate compartment for the toilet.

The Norwegian Dawn was built in 2001 but is a beautiful ship in excellent condition that looks much newer.

The first two days of the cruise were sea days, then we spent three full days in beautiful Bermuda. During our first morning in Bermuda we took a boat tour of special places in Bermuda which included homes of the rich and famous.

There was an optional formal night which we observed. Not everyone did but those who didn't were also dressed very nicely. Even though the other nights were informal some men wore a tie and jacket every night while some women were dressed in pretty dresses.

I was a little reluctant to try Norwegian but took this cruise because it was the only seven night cruise this summer with an extended stay in Bermuda. After taking this cruise, I would sail on Norwegian again, without thinking twice about it.

I'm really glad you enjoyed it and that your experience was different than ours on the Star. I always believe every cruise can be different and even the same cruise can be a different experience to different cruisers.

I agree with you that every cruise can be different, even for people on the same ship. For example if someone on our Norwegian Dawn cruise to Bermuda had a standard sized cabin and ate only in my least favorite restaurants on the ship they would probably have very different opinions about accommodations and food.

Even the same ship can provide a very different experience for the same person within the same time frame. My favorite cruise to date was our Baltic Cruise to Russia on Celebrity's Constellation in June 2006, but our Caribbean cruise on that same ship just five months later was one of our least favorite cruises.

We too, are Elite Celebrity members and recently tried NCL to see what all the BruHaHa is about the Freestyle cruising. I really wasn't expecting much as we have been more than happy with our various Celebrity cruises. What a surprise! We loved it. The embarkation and disembarkation went much more smoothly than our last two X cruises. Entertainment provided many more options and opportunities - thoroughly enjoyed the pub entertainment among others. Although we mumbled about the minimal surcharge at specialty restaurants in the beginning we found them to be delicious. Loved the Mexican, French and Fusion. Italian was so so. We were able to walk right in without reservations and were treated like royalty. We also had a mini suite. Found it to be comparable in size to most X veranda rooms but with a much larger bathroom/tub. Were amazed at the CC get together that all the ship officers came by to such an intimate gathering. Down side was personal attention from room stewards and the main dining room. Dinners there left a lot to be desired but were quite good for lunches and brft. Although very freindly and adequate, lacked the personal touch. Will definitely give them a try again, especially for a very relaxed vacation.

Bridge Maven, I am glad to hear you enjoyed your cruise on the Norwegian Dawn. We, too, had a lovely time on it during a back-to-back a few years ago.

I read the boards of all the cruise lines I have been on (NCL, Princess, HAL, Celebrity), and I've come to notice that HAL, Celebity, and Princess have their devotees who firmly believe their favorite line is better than most, and certainly better than NCL (and Carnival). Some posts get downright nasty, full of disparaging remarks about the ships and the passengers of NCL and Carnival. And for some, having sailed on NCL or Carnival isn't necessary for expressing a nasty, negative opinion on those lines. :confused: It's refreshing to read a report from a frequent cruiser on one of the so-called upscale lines who had a good time on NCL.

True stories: The most obnixious drunks I have encountered on a cruise were on supposedly sedate HAL. A loud, drunk group of untalented singers took over the piano bar one night, causing us to avoid it.

The worst incident in cabin service that I had was on ("be treated famously") Celebrity, on the Galaxy a few years ago. We came back from an 8-hour excursion to find damp towels still on the floor. We missed our early dinner while phoning housekeeping and waiting for clean towels.

The worst dining room incident I've had was on Princess, where they lost a bottle of wine we had purchased a couple nights earlier. With twice as many dining venues, NCL never lost a bottle of my wine!

I have thoroughly enjoyed all my cruises, and I consider the above to be minor, not major incidents. But I find it interesting that they all happened on the lines that are often considered to be far superior than NCL.

I have experienced no major differences in overall service and food among any of the lines I have been on. And, on my recent Celebrity and Princess cruises, the overall dress was pretty much as casual as on my recent NCL cruises - a few were quite dressed up, a few were rather sloppy, and the vast majority were dressed less-than-formal on the formal nights and quite casual on the non-formal nights. I know others' experiences can be different from mine, but I hate generalizations, and this seemed the time to throw in my 2 cents worth.

OK, I am off the soapbox. Happy cruising to all, on whatever line makes you happiest. For me, it's Royal Caribbean next. :D

I'll have to give them a try. I was interested in Norway back before her engine blew just do to the ship history (although the wear and tear was reportedly an issue).

An X poster once said that NCL with specialty restaurants frequented is on par with any lines better perormance and the base fare price point of NCL usually means that even with those surcharges included its very competitive pricing. OP concurs.

Of course, there are those that love to bash... if not one line then another.

I have to agree with nps001. We sailed on the Star also and besides it being the ship of disease (norwalk virus), and the nickel and diming you, overhead announcements all day,and the added cost of their speciality dining venues to make X my choice now. I also found that I missed quite a few of their shows as we were freestyle dining when they were onstage.

SO I prefer to eat in the MDR or speciality restaurant on X where I have the same waiter and ass't every night who know my preferences and have them available to me.

Helen, my husband and I also love to play bridge which was the inspiration for my screen name. NCL did not have a formal bridge program on this cruise but the daily included a time and place for informal bridge. We went to the card room at that time and found another couple to play bridge with on sea days.

Like many of the other posters to this thread, I have cruised with several cruise lines: 5 RCCL, 5 NCL, 3 HAL, 2 Princess, 1 -X-, 1 Disney, and 1 Carnival. Each cruise line and ship I have been on has some positive and negative things, but all have been good cruises and I would sail with any of the cruiselines again.

OP, is Carnak, a headwaiter on Dawn, still there? He gave us great service and was very entertaining on NCL Majesty. He said he was going to the Dawn after his break.

we love celebrity and think they do an great job. we did a cruise on the majesty. what a mistake. now take in to notice that this ship is 17 years old and so most of what we come to expect on celebrity was not their at all. the cabins were very small on the ship and storage was a problem. the bathroom, T.V. and A.C. did not work that well, but we ignored it. the food was fair. the dining room food was not that bad but everything else was really hit or miss. they never cut the fruit like they do on =X=, it was the same food every day with no variation. we did not like the freestyle dining, having to wait to go to the dining room and have a different waiter each night was not our style. i do think it would be more meaning full if the ship had more resturants like the dawn or gem. service was not good at all. no special attention, wait staff never talked, bar service was good, we never saw or room attendents until the 4th day. the entertainment was good though, real talent there. the overall decor and style is really bright and not elegent at all. we are glad we tryed it, but will stick to =X=.;)

In my opinion, making assumptions for NCL based on a very old ship would be like making assumptions for Royal Caribbean based on Soverign of the Seas. Our worst cabin on any ship, including Italian Line's Leonardo da Vinci built in 1960, was our tiny oceanview cabin on RCL's Soverign of the Seas while our nicest cabin that wasn't a suite, including Celebrity's M class aft concierge class cabins, was an aft D-1 on RCL's Brilliance of the Seas.

also its a ship that is leaving the NCL fleet-this is its last year. The newer NCL ships are much different. The Majesty is leaving because it doesn't do freestyle well.

Umm we have done NCL twice and have never looked back! Celebrity is just better in every way In our opinion

We hated NCL, and sorry in our opinion, and my families Celebritys Specialty Restaurant is one of the best places we have ever eaten. Not to mention Service on NCL was so bad, we had family leave the ship before there second week back to back. Even my good friend who owns a Cruiseshipceters in Toronto just went on the NCL Pearl, after 8 cruises on RCCL, 4 Celebrity, 3 Princess, 2 HAL and 1 Regent, and she said she would never sail NCL again

Celebrity is my favortie cruiseline. We liked Summit better than Infinity.

We went on two NCL cruises. (Gem & Pearl) Service was over the top. We were in a Courtyard Villa. Suites on Celebrity do not even come close to the service level in these suites on NCL. The experience was amazing.

Our next B2B 28 days is on Infinity.

I think that I would sail in a Courtyard Villa on NCL for every cruise if I could afford to do so.

I would sail NCL in a regular cabin ( balcony), if the itinerary was great. My DH loves NCL, only because he never has to wear a suit. AND he loved the different restaurants, even with the extra fee.

My sisters and I travel together and we are looking forward to going back on Celebrity. We do love the special feeling you get. We will ignore the "worn" areas on carpet, furniture, etc. Looking forward to the restrictive smoking policy ( I have asthma).

Oh and we never felt that we were pressured to spend money on any of the lines. We ignored the BING BING BINGO calls on NCL. And politely said no to the drink "pushers" on Celebrity. NOT a big deal. A simple no thank you was all that was needed.

Even though the op did not ask about RCCL, we liked Vision of the Seas, good good food and good service...

My wife and I sailed on the NCL Dawn some years ago. We did not like the freestyle cruising. My wife didn't enjoy being nickle and dimed either. The food was awful. If the food isn't good on a cruise then you can't enjoy the cruise. The service wasn't good either.

I agree that food is very important on a cruise but our experience was very different than yours.

As far as free style cruising goes, I realize it isn't for everyone. After experiencing it, I enjoy both freestyle and traditional for different reasons. We will continue to sail on Celebrity but plan to take a cruise from NYC to the Caribbean on Norwegian's newest ship this winter.

We love taking cruises that leave from NYC, so it is worth it for us to pay more for an NCL cruise from NYC to the Caribbean during the winter than to fly to Florida or San Juan for a Celebrity cruise. I would also prefer to take a cruise that is slightly longer than to allocate the time to a combination of cruise, pre cruise hotels, etc.

One big difference between NCL and Celebrity is that you are always guaranteed a table for two on NCL, and just about anytime you want, while on Celebrity you have to beg for it from the beginning, and then get it only if your're lucky.

In the last two years I've been on NCL Pearl and Jewel as well as X's Solstice and Century.

Both lines were fine, but overall I prefer Celebrity. I am closer to the X demographic then the NCL ( older, retired, no children on cruise, etc.) Until the Solstice, I would have rated NCL slightly better, but for me the Solstice was a game changer. Food to me, was superior on X. The speciality resturants on NCL were well appointed, but some of the meals were disappointing. Dined at Cagney's on different ships and had food related problems both times. Fewer announcements on X. Experienced constant upselling on NCL. General behavior of passengers on X appeared better than on NCL. Probably a bit more to do on NCL than Celebrity. I would consider an NCL cruise in a second, but Celebrity has become my line of choice. Looking forward to the Equinox in December.

The Millennium class ships are way better in design then the 2 NCL shops we went on. NCL was the worst! My wife and I would never go even if we could for free. The ships were bright and tacky, people rude, passengers, rude, pool ugly, rooms ugly,staff never smiled, never said hello, never offered a cold towel, or yogurt for a sunburn, or to help us find lost sunglasses like on Celebrity. We just thought it was cheap looking and nothing like the Summit, Constellation,or Infinity. Last time on the SUmmit in March we were not hassled to buy drinks, and with the new Drink packages coming this fall, just buy a package that is right for you.

Did you ever have an opportunity to take a free cruise?

My husband and I had an opportunity to take a free cruise from NYC to Bermuda on Celebrity's Zenith a few years ago but didn't go because I won't take a cruise without a private balcony, even for free.

LOL I agree we would not unless we had a balcony either, We were offered a free Carnival cruise once we did not take it
