A tour of Celebrity Eclipse with Celebrity Cruises

I have to admit that since I took my first cruise last year, I’ve really caught the bug, so it was a pleasure to be invited to spend the day on board Celebrity Eclipse, a ship and cruise line that I didn’t know much about. Being quite new to cruising I’m realising that every cruise line has its own unique style and atmosphere and each has points of difference that will appeal to different types of guest. This does mean you need to do your homework before you book, in order the choose a cruise that’s right for you, but the good news is that there really is a cruise line for every age, budget and taste. Although I was only on board Celebrity Eclipse for a day, these were my first impressions of what you can expect when sailing with Celebrity Cruises .

A boutique country house style

Considering that Celebrity Cruises is a mainstream cruise line with larger ships I loved the appearance of the ship which I’d describe as Contemporary Country House style. The colours were warm and welcoming, the furnishings stylish and each different part of the ship seemed to have a slightly different character. I loved the library, not so much for the books, as an elegant space with the tall bookcases and wing chairs where you could sit quietly and relax. Another favourite spot was the lawn club on the top deck. A lot of things in cruising can feel a bit fake, but here the grass was real and I could imagine enjoying a drink up here with the sound of croquet being played or the clink of a game of boules on the lawn. So very English.

I loved the library as a welcoming space where you could imagine coming to escape with a good book.

A Grown up feel

The atmosphere on board Celebrity Eclipse felt quite grown up, although I suspect the upcoming cruise to Iceland and Norway would attract an older crowd anyway. Although there is a kid’s club on board, the average age of guests seemed to be 60+ and I noticed a few areas of the ship, such as the solarium, that were reserved for adults only. I think this ship would be ideal for couples and groups of adults or perhaps families travelling with older children but the atmosphere didn’t seem conducive for those with younger children.

Where are we staying?

We were treated to a tour of all the suites on board which generated lots of oohs and aahs and certainly had the wow factor. The penthouse suite was like a small apartment with the biggest bathroom I’ve seen and a baby grand piano in the sitting area.  If you have a cool few thousand to spend I could imagine the wealthy grandparents staying here and inviting all their extended family in for an evening en famille. My favourite was the slightly more modest Sky Suite where Celebrity Ambassador Ben Fogle had recently been staying with his family, which had a corner location and was lovely and light with colourful artwork. Back to reality, the ‘normal’ balcony stateroom we saw was still very nice with a light and classic theme and lovely bed-linen. There seemed to be sheets on the bed rather than a duvet, perhaps due to the unusual rounded ends of the bed. I was also impressed with the staff that we met, who even though we weren’t staying on board, greeted us with a “Hello, how are you?” and a welcoming smile. As we came on board there was a glass of wine or juice waiting for guests and everyone had a little joke or a laugh to put you in the holiday spirit.

My favourite was the Sky Suite with colourful contemporary artwork and a corner position with double windows.

Food glorious food

Celebrity Eclipse is definitely a ship for those who enjoy food and wine and are looking for a gourmet experience on board. There are so many different speciality restaurants that I was starting to lose count by the end of our tour. We had lunch in the main restaurant which is of course a complimentary part of your cruise package, but there were examples of the different dishes laid out in each speciality restaurant so we could see what was on offer. For those special celebration meals there is the high end Murano restaurant, that wouldn’t be out of place in a 5 star London hotel, with over the top flower arrangement and a private dining room. More my style for less formal dining there was the Tuscan Grill for steaks and meat dishes with red glassware and wine bottles on barrels, or the Qisine restaurant serving contemorary Asian fusion small dishes with menu selection from an iPad. I also liked the look of Bistro on 5 which was a great lunchtime venue.

Here’s a flavour of the dishes you might try in the Qisine and Tuscan Grille restaurants on board Celebrity Eclipse.

The speciality restaurants are all very well if you are prepared to pay the extra supplement charges to eat there, but what about the main dining room where guests will eat their evening meals on most nights? Well that’s where we ate lunch and it is an elegant, light and airy restaurant, double height with a huge sparkly central lighting. On the lower level is the set time dining, with two different sittings, which you choose at the start of the cruise, while on the upper level is Celebrity Select dining, where you have flexibility on the time you come to dinner, just like a normal restaurant. Of course there is also a self-service restaurant on board, but we didn’t have time to look at that on our tour.

We chose from a shortened menu which had a couple of choices for each course but would also normally have some classic favourites too. I tried a prawn cocktail on a bed of lettuce and a very pretty and colourful salad with pomegranate seeds and raspberry vinaigrette, followed by a delicious filet mignon steak and a soft chocolate mousse cake and strawberry dipped in caramel with ice cream. It would be a treat to eat food of this standard every day, as well as trying out some of the speciality restaurants during the cruise to spice things up a bit.

The Spa difference

Celebrity Eclipse is a wonderful ship if you take your spa holidays seriously and you can even book a special Aqua Class package, with luxury staterooms that are close to the spa area. Aqua Class guests also have exclusive use of the Blu dining room and the Persian Garden spa relaxation area with heated lounge chairs and different steam areas. During our day on board, we were offered a spa treatment and I decided to go for the pedicure to get my feet in good shape for the summer. I sat with Kelly, one of the other bloggers in a little private area for pedicures which had a view out to sea and spent a lovely hour having my feet massaged and my toe nails groomed and polished to a professional gloss finish that I could never have achieved myself. It would be a treat to have a pedicure with a friend, as there is room for 3 people at one time and the nail technicians from Jamaica were also super-friendly and easy to chat to.

After the beauty treatments we relaxed for a bit in the Solarium area, just outside the spa which was for adults only, where I wouldn’t minded have spending an hour or two on the sun lounger with a magazine. There was a very nice cafe area which served healthy snacks and small salad dishes which were a complimentary part of the cruise.

Unfortunately the weather was not being kind as we passed through the outdoor pool area – where did those Caribbean blue skies go?

Overall Impressions?

I had a lovely day looking around Celebrity Eclipse. Of course it was only one day, rather than a full cruise, but my impression was of a ship that has a luxurious, grown up feel, with great service, spa facilities and superb food options if you are looking for a gourmet experience.

The 2010-built Celebrity Eclipse cruise ship is the 3rd of the Solstice-class Celebrity Cruise boats, together with Equinox , Silhouette , Solstice , Reflection . Celebrity Cruises Eclipse ship was scheduled for "Celebrity Revolution" drydock refurbishment on April 1, 2020.

The vessel (IMO number 9404314) is currently Malta- flagged (MMSI 249666000) and registered in Valletta .

History - construction and ownership

Celebrity Cruises was founded in 1988 as the Greece-based Chandris Line (cruise shipping operations between 1974-1996). In 1997, Royal Caribbean International (RCI) merged with "Celebrity Cruises Ltd" to become "Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd" (RCCL). The "X" on ship funnels is the Greek letter chi (standing for "Chandris"). Common features of Celebrity Cruises ships include aft located glass-walled dining rooms, signature alternate dining venues, bars and lounges, spacious Atrium lobby areas, a large number of balcony staterooms, large sundecks with swimming pools, The Retreat (adults-only sundeck with full-size swimming pool, Jacuzzi, cabanas, poolside full bar service). Rooftop Terrace (top-deck outdoor lounge-restaurant-cinema), large Spa (with Thermal Suites), premium retail shops selling top-brand merchandise.

The 2900-passenger ship Celebrity Eclipse is the 3rd Solstice-class vessel, preceded by Celebrity Equinox and Celebrity Solstice, considered to be the most environment-friendly in the world, with a photovoltaic system, optimized hull design, efficient lighting system, and hull coatings - innovations, which save 30% more energy. Celebrity Eclipse went into dry dock in April 2015 and came out in May with new features: the Cellar Masters wine bar became the Gastrobar, serving 40 and even more craft beers. Passengers are now able to order drink and food on iPads. A frozen drink bar, the Slush, was added to the pool area. The American-style casino became more British with twelve British-themed slot machines. Eclipse also boasts a private photo studio.

Decks and Cabins

Celebrity Eclipse staterooms (1425 total, in 30 grades) include 66x Suites, 1145 Balconies, 70x Oceanviews, 140x Inside cabins. Most staterooms are sized 195 ft2 / 18 m2. Around 85% of all passenger accommodations have a private step-out balcony. Most balconies are sized 55 ft2 / 5 m2. Wheelchair-accessible cabins are 30. The largest are the Penthouse Suites (1290 ft2 / 120 m2 with terrace sized 390 ft2 / 36 m2).

The boat has 15 decks , of which 14 are passenger-accessible and 8 with cabins.

There are various restaurants to choose from. The multiple dining events include the Moonlight Sonata (MDR), BLU (offering exclusive dining to guests in Aqua Class), Cafe al Bacio, Oceanview Cafe, Mast Grill, the Continental, Murano and Tuscan Grille. The Qsine, a new specialty dining venue, was also introduced on Celebrity Eclipse. It offers remarkable and famous dishes from around the world.

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

Celebrity Eclipse hosts the Celebrity iLounge, a hip, modern Internet cafe providing passengers with Internet connectivity, inspiring classes, and new tech gadgets. Fresh green grass on the top deck's Lawn Club and fantastic pampering services in AquaSpa will make you love the ship forever. The Solarium and AquaSpa form an adults-only area for relaxation. The Lawn Club sundeck, with its real grass, cut every day, is where activities, such as giant Jenga, boules and mini-golfing, are held. Live music is available at almost all hours of the day and well into the evening, and the stage shows are unforgettable. Bars are good and are designed for any taste. For example, the Molecular Bar has very good cocktails.

In 2023, Celebrity introduced pickleball playing (at the sports courts) fleetwide. The sports facilities are complimentary, including the pickleball equipment (net, paddles, balls) but operated with separate scheduled playing times for adults and families (with kids older than 6).

Pickleball Court's locations vary by ship class - on EDGE ships is at the Rooftop Garden (Deck 15), on SOLSTICE ships is on the Sports Deck (Deck 15), on MILLENNIUM ships - at the Multi-Sports Court (Deck 12).

Itineraries

Celebrity Eclipse itinerary program is based on Southern Caribbean cruises with departures from Miami Florida . Eclipse also operates in Europe on the Canary Islands and Baltic Sea sailings from Southampton , with Transatlantic repositioning crossings.

Celebrity Cruises Eclipse ship was the first large liner homeported in Dublin Ireland . The roundtrip program (May through June 2018) started on April 29 with a 10-day inaugural cruise to ports in Ireland and Iceland (Belfast, Reykjavik, Akureyri, Lerwick / Shetland Island, Cobh-Cork). Also from Dublin were visited Norwegian Fjords - 8-day itinerary to Bergen, Skjolden, Geiranger, Alesund, and Lerwick).

Due to the Coronavirus crisis, the Celebrity ship Eclipse was paused for 2+ years (March 2020 thru April 2022), restarting operations on April 26, 2022 (11-day Hawaii from Vancouver to Honolulu). The boat's inaugural Australia and New Zealand season was rescheduled from 2021-Q1 (ending on April 4th) to winter 2022-2023 (October-April). Between September 2022 and April 2023, Eclipse is homeported in Sydney NSW and Auckland NZ for 5- to 13-night itineraries themed as "Five Star Getaways, "Sun and Beach Escapes", "Food and Wine Classics". Season 2022 featured longer port stays (8 pm departures from Melbourne, Brisbane QLD, Lyttelton-Christchurch NZ, Papeete Tahiti, Lahaina Maui Hawaii), maiden for the fleet port ( Port Arthur Tasmania ), South Pacific Islands hoppers, seasonal Transpacific ship relocation itineraries (RepositionCruises.com) between Hawaii and Australia (Honolulu-Sydney).

Celebrity Eclipse is deployed in South America for 4 months (December 2023 thru April 2024) visiting a total of 16 destinations and offering a 14-night "Antarctica" and a 12-night "Argentina & Patagonia" itineraries. Call ports include Valparaiso-Santiago (Chile) ,  Buenos Aires (Argentina) ,  Montevideo (Uruguay) ,  Antarctic Peninsula . Signature land tours offer visits to Chile's Osorno Volcano (from  Puerto Montt ), Argentina’s Playa El Doradillo (from  Puerto Madryn ), as well as Peru's Cusco and Machu Picchu (from Callao ) during the 16-night repositioning voyage from the USA (Los Angeles) to Chile which includes 2 overnights in  Callao-Lima (Peru) .

Celebrity Eclipse Wiki

Celebrity Cruises Eclipse ship was launched on February 28, 2010. The liner belongs to the company's Solstice-class vessels, with sisterships Equinox , Reflection , Silhouette , Solstice . Eclipse was built by Meyer Werft at Papenburg Shipyard (Germany) .

As newbuilds , Solstice-class liners were among the most environment-friendly marine vessels ever constructed. The Eclipse ship has an efficient hull design coated with light-emitting diodes and an innovative photovoltaic system. This way, the boat's energy-saving increases ~30% compared to a similar-class passenger vessel. Solstice-class also featured the fleet's first new cabin types and categories (ConciergeClass, AquaClass). Around 85% of all passenger staterooms have private step-out balconies.

The ship's namesakes are the two Scenic Yacht Cruises' superyachts Scenic Eclipse (2019) and Scenic Eclipse II (2023).

Celebrity Eclipse Cabins and Suites

The cabins and suites on the Celebrity Eclipse are much like those in the other Celebrity Solstice -class cruise ships. The Celebrity Eclipse interior common areas make up much of the inside space not designated for  cabins and suites .

The 3000-passenger ship has over 1400 cabins, with 11 different cabin categories ranging in size (and price) from the 140 inside staterooms to the two luxurious penthouse suites.

Celebrity Cruises

The 140 inside cabins on the Celebrity Eclipse (category 09, 10, 11, and 12) range in size from 183 to 200 square feet. They feature baths identical to the oceanview cabins and have a sitting area with sofa, 32" LCD television, and vanity. Some of the inside cabins have a trundle bed.

Celebrity Eclipse - Ocean View Cabin

The 70 ocean view cabins (category 07 and 08) are 177 square feet in size and have a window, but no veranda. The ocean view cabins have a sitting area with sofa, a 32" LCD television, and vanity desk. Some ocean view cabins have a trundle bed.

Celebrity Eclipse - Deluxe Ocean View Cabin With Veranda

The Deluxe Ocean View Cabin with Veranda is the largest cabin category on the Celebrity Eclipse, with 719 cabins (categories 1A, 1B, 1C, 2A, 2B, 2C, 2D). The cabins have 194 square feet with a 54 square foot veranda, the same size as the Concierge Class and AquaClass cabins. These standard balcony cabins have a 32" television, sitting area with sofa, and vanity. The bath's area is also identical to the AquaClass and Concierge Class cabins, but the amenities are not as luxurious.

The Celebrity Eclipse has four Family Ocean View Staterooms with a Veranda. These spacious cabins measure 575 square feet and have either 53 or 105 square feet in the balcony. The sitting area sofa is convertible to a trundle bed, and the cabin also has two bunks for children . The master bedroom has a privacy partition.

The 273 Concierge Class cabins on the Celebrity Eclipse (category C1, C2, and C3) are 194 square feet with a 54 square foot balcony. This size is identical to the AquaClass and standard balcony cabins. The Concierge Class cabins have a sitting area with sofa, 32" LCD television, vanity, and veranda with lounge seating.

Celebrity Eclipse - Sunset Veranda

The 24 sunset veranda staterooms (category SV) on the Celebrity Eclipse are found aft and have wonderful views of the ship's wake. The sunset veranda cabins measure 194 square feet and have a 54 square foot veranda, the same size as the deluxe ocean view staterooms with veranda, the concierge class staterooms, and the AquaClass staterooms. The sunset veranda cabins have a 32" LCD television and veranda with lounge seating.

Celebrity Eclipse - AquaClass Cabin

The 130 AquaClass Cabins on the Celebrity Eclipse (category AQ) are 195 square feet and have a 54 square foot balcony. These cabins are found on deck 11 close to the AquaSpa. The cabins are identical in size and configuration to the deluxe ocean view staterooms with verandas but have luxury amenities, lounge seating on the veranda, thicker towels, and a marvelous Hansgrohe shower panel.

Celebrity Eclipse - Sky Suite

The 44 Celebrity Eclipse Sky Suites (category S1 and S2) measure 300 square feet and have a 79 square foot veranda. The living room has a queen sofa sleeper, 40" LCD television, and a mini-refrigerator. The bath has a tub/shower combination and washbasin. The veranda has lounge seating.

Celebrity Eclipse - Celebrity Suite

The 12 Celebrity Suites on the Celebrity Eclipse cruise ship (category CS) measure 394 square feet and have a 105 square foot balcony. The living room has a sectional queen sofa sleeper, lounge seating, mini-refrigerator, 52" LCD television, and vanity. The bedroom has its own 40" LCD television, vanity, walk-in closet, dual access bath with shower/tub combination and washbasin, and veranda with lounge seating.

Celebrity Eclipse Royal Suite

The Celebrity Eclipse has eight Royal Suites (category RS), each measuring 590 square feet with a 153 square foot veranda. The Royal Suites have a separate living room with dining area, sitting area, 52" LCD television, and a queen sofa sleeper. The suite has a separate powder room, and the master bath has a whirlpool tub with separate shower stall. The veranda has a second whirlpool tub and nice lounge seating. The separate bedroom has a queen-sized bed, 40" LCD television, vanity, and walk-in closet.

The Royal Suite on the Celebrity Eclipse has a large, comfortable veranda.

Celebrity Eclipse Penthouse

The Celebrity Eclipse has two Penthouse Suites (category PS) that measure 1,291 square feet and have a 389 square foot balcony. These are the largest suites on the cruise ship. The Penthouse Suites have a separate living room with dining area, baby grand piano, queen-sized sofa sleeper, full bar, and lounge seating. The suite also has a full guest bath, 52" LCD television, and veranda with a whirlpool tub and lounge seating. The separate bedroom has a king-sized bed, a second 52" LCD television, vanity, and walk-in closet with a leather-tiled floor. The marble master bath has a whirlpool but, separate huge shower with dual shower heads, and twin sinks, and a third LCD television.

The "Love Boat" line today announced that its 2026 European cruise and cruisetour season will be its biggest ever, with five Princess cruise ships sailing the region, including the sensational new Sun Princess. Set to sail on a record-breaking 222 cruises, guests will have unparalleled opportunities to explore the beauty and diversity of Europe .

Running March through November 2026 , the European season features 59 unique itineraries, visiting 101 destinations across 29 countries, ranging from five to 42 nights. Highlights of the upcoming season include an opportunity to experience the 2026 total solar eclipse; sail on the newest Princess ship – Sun Princess; the return of roundtrip cruises from Copenhagen and new itineraries from Rome . The robust season goes on sale May 23, 2024 .

2026 Europe Highlights Sun Princess , the next-level Love Boat from Princess, will sail 7-, 14- and 21-night Mediterranean voyages departing from Civitavecchia ( Rome ), Piraeus ( Athens ), and Barcelona . Guests on a 14- and 21-night voyage can enjoy an itinerary without calling to the same port twice for a Grand Mediterranean Adventure .

Itinerary Sample: A seven-night Mediterranean voyage sails roundtrip from Piraeus ( Athens ) to Barcelona , calling at Santorini, Kotor, Corfu, and Messina ( Sicily ).

The newest Princess ship is a true engineering marvel, offering an extraordinary cruise experience with not-to-be-missed culinary, entertainment and luxury accommodations. Sun Princess debuts new eye-catching experience venues including The Dome, a groundbreaking geodesic, glass-enclosed structure at the top of the ship inspired by the terraces of Santorini. The outward and suspended Sphere Atrium, the namesake of this new class of ship, takes the central Piazza hub of the ship into a new dimension.
