With its focus on new equipment and ability to snap back from COVID-19 rather quickly, Cline Tours was among the first in the nation to place a new 10-coach order with MCI in 2021. - Photo: MCI

With its focus on new equipment and ability to snap back from COVID-19 rather quickly, Cline Tours was among the first in the nation to place a new 10-coach order with MCI in 2021.

In 1996, John McCommon, president of Ridgeland, Mississippi’s Cline Tours Inc ., purchased the operation, which at the time was about 13 years old but only consisted of one bus.

“It was a well-known business at the time with a great name in the region, which is why I chose to keep the Cline Tours brand,” explains McCommon. “But obviously, you can’t make a living with one bus, so I looked to grow the business and was able to do so fairly quickly.”

Flash forward to today, McCommon has grown Cline Tours to eight locations across Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Tennessee, which transports more than 10,000 passengers at any given time.

Growing its stature in the industry, Cline Tours prides itself on providing excellent customer service, remaining vigilant with its safety practices, and using cutting-edge technology throughout the organization.

From McCommon’s start, he not only rebuilt and expanded the company’s fleet but did so with only new coaches engineered with the latest features — a strategic tactic that distinguishes Cline from its competitors and bolsters its bottom line.

For these reasons and more, McCommon and Cline Tours was named METRO Magazine ’s Motorcoach Operator of the Year at this year’s United Motorcoach Association’s EXPO , which was held in Charlotte, N.C., in February.

“Receiving this award certainly means a lot, especially coming from METRO Magazine , which is very well respected in the industry,” says McCommon. “Also, to be recognized as a real contributor to our industry means a lot to us and we are very proud of it.”

Cline’s Growth and Strategy

Since purchasing Cline, McCommon has brought a progressive and ambitious touch to create one of the nation’s most innovative tour, charter, and corporate shuttle operations.

Upon purchasing the operation, McCommon secured work at the then burgeoning casinos in Mississippi, growing the fleet to about 13 coaches by 2001 in the process.

Following 9/11 , McCommon bought out his business partner and saw the growth of his company eventually begin to grow by the mid-2000s.

“Once the shock of 9/11 and the change of ownership wore off, we started to really grow organically,” he explains. “Over the years, we’ve also had numerous opportunities to grow our company through acquisitions and have done so through the purchase of 19 companies, not only in Mississippi but also in Alabama, Arkansas, and Tennessee.”

While recognizing casino business was helping to pay the bills at the time, McCommon used his company’s success to take advantage of other opportunities to diversify as they arose, including a military contract at Camp Shelby in Hattiesburg, Miss.

“That contract produced great revenue and allowed us to start buying new buses,” says McCommon. “Once we started adding those buses, the business seemed to follow.”

Another successful avenue for Cline Tours came in the way of the NCAA’s Southeastern Conference (SEC) colleges and universities, including the University of Mississippi, Mississippi State, and the University of Alabama.

“We probably do more SEC football business than any other bus company,” says McCommon, who adds that Cline’s clientele also includes smaller, lesser-known colleges and universities, as well as a junior colleges and private schools.

He says a heavy saturation in this market was key to the operation getting back on its feet after COVID-19 took away so much of the company’s business.

“Many of those schools were less affected by COVID, and after about four months or so, that business started to come back, especially at some of the high schools, and then eventually those Division 1 college programs, who were the first to start competitive sports again,” says McCommon. “Once that business started to come back, it came back strong.”

Today, the majority of Cline’s business is charter.

New coaches, safety, and more.

From McCommon’s start, he not only rebuilt and expanded the company’s fleet but did so with only new coaches engineered with the latest features — a strategic tactic that distinguishes Cline from any competitor and bolsters its bottom line. In his words, “That’s because everybody wants to ride on the new motorcoaches.”

Cline tailors its coaches’ specifications adding important safety options such as 360-degree cameras for a bird’s eye view around the coach and the Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) that provides collision mitigation, lane departure, and traffic sign recognition.

“We’re very concerned with the safety of not only our passengers, but also our staff,” says McCommon. “One of the reasons we began to move toward using only newer coaches was because newer buses are generally safer buses because the technology is more up to date. They also typically get about 10 to 15 percent better fuel mileage, which helps us control fuel costs.”

In addition to being named METRO ’s Motorcoach Operator of the Year, Cline Tours was also the winner of 2024’s International Motorcoach Group ’s Safety Award.

“We are really proud of winning that award as well, because safety is really how we sell ourselves to our customers,” says McCommon.

The move was a step back toward Cline’s policy of swapping out its old coaches for new ones.

“Before the pandemic, we were buying 20 to 25 coaches a year, at our peak, from MCI ,” says McCommon. “And that practiced continued for about 10 years, where we’d sell 20 coaches and buy 20 coaches, but COVID killed that. We plan to get back on that cycle, but it’s going to take several years for us to do so.”

McCommon says there have been several reasons for his operation straying from its traditional practice, including the value of previously-owned coaches cratering and soaring interest rates.

Another reason, he adds, is the supply chain issues experienced by motorcoach suppliers.

“Our suppliers have been devastated, particularly the manufacturers and parts suppliers. It is crazy what we had to go through during COVID, but it’s been especially crazy for them and we can’t operate without our suppliers,” McCommon says, adding that he plans on remaining patient and continuing to work as a partner with his suppliers.

“We know they’ve been through a lot and we’re sure there’s going to be some good to come out of it, but until then we are going to continue to work with MCI and all our suppliers to find solutions and keep moving forward,” he says.

Innovative technologies, maintaining customers.

Cline Tours keeps miles ahead of others by applying innovative technologies. From its front office, to dispatch, to operational data on its coaches, Cline is often the first to embrace new software and systems to improve customer service and operational profitability.

“One of the first steps in the technology chain for us that was truly meaningful were electronic logs,” says McCommon. “We got on board with that technology about a year and a half before the mandate because we didn't want to wait until the last minute to find out there were issues. Fortunately, the first supplier we partnered with worked out for us and they are still our partner today.”

At Cline, every customer relationship starts with communicatio n. Staff stay connected digitally with customers and drivers in advance, during, and after each trip.

To successfully enable this next level of service, Cline uses C Spire, a Ridgeland, Miss.-based telecommunications supplier, for its VoIP phone systems, email, and software platforms, which link its locations and powers its online booking.

More clients are navigating away from booking by telephone, McCommon said in a YouTube video promoting its partnership with C Spire.

“Forty percent of our bookings are now online. It’s where everyone is going, and our mission is to get there first,” he says.

While adding that 90% of Cline ’s work is from repeat customers, McCommon says much of his operation’s work is driven through its website, which was revamped several years ago and is responsive for optimal viewing from a phone, tablet, or computer.

With business strong and getting stronger, McCommon says his operation’s biggest issue is the same as most, which is having enough drivers on board to handle potential growth.

“We had a lot of drivers who moved on to other opportunities or just didn’t come back after COVID because they were retired already and didn’t necessarily need the income,” he says.

To combat the issue, Cline has raised wages, offered sign-on bonuses, and created competitive benefits packages, including insurance and 401K programs.

“The buses aren’t going to drive themselves,” says McCommon. “We need drivers, and to get them in the door, we’ve got to make working here as attractive as possible.”

While the trucking industry does supply some competition for drivers in the areas Cline serves, McCommon says with that industry down they have been able to address another talent issue the operation has been experiencing.

“We have been able to hire some mechanics from the trucking business, or from shops that serve the trucking industry, because business their business has been falling off, but ours is not,” says McCommon. “While that remains to be the case, we want to continue to take advantage of while we still can.”

Cline Tours and MCI mark major milestones in their partnership

Cline Tours and MCI are marking major milestones in their partnership

John McCommon, President of Mississippi-based Cline Tours, says his loyalty to Motor Coach Industries (MCI) began in 2004, when sales rep Robert Lessor made a cold call visit to his business.

“We hit it off. I bought a bus or two from him almost immediately,” McCommon said. That one bus has led to the purchase of 300 buses. That 300th bus was also special for MCI. It marked the sale of the company’s production of the 10,000th J-4500 motorcoach.

“Rob has, over the years, has just done an amazing, amazing job of taking care of our interests,” said McCommon, in a video produced by Terrapin Blue at the recent International Motorcoach Group (IMG) Annual Meeting to celebrate both companies’ major milestones.

Quality products, people

The relationship flourished because of MCI’s commitment to being “responsive to any and all of our needs. We’ve bought a bunch of buses from them over the years. They were able to come to the table at the right time at the right price and, all along the way, their service has been great. The product has been great. It contributes to much of our success, to the quality of the product and the people behind it at MCI.”

Cline received its first J4500 bus in 2005. Its purchases of J4500s over the years account for roughly 3% of the 10,000 sold, says MCI Vice President Brent Maitland.

When McCommon acquired the Ridgeland, Mississippi-based tour and charter company in 1996, the fleet had one MCI coach. Over the decades, he has grown Cline into one of the top operators with the largest fleet of newer J-Series coaches in North America.

“It just shows that the product has really evolved itself in a nice way,” said Maitland, adding that partnerships in the industry can’t be taken for granted. “It doesn’t happen automatically. You have to work at it because (there are) challenges. (There are) technical issues, at times, and our support team has to step up, or our parts team. And so, I think it’s being able to do that over the long haul that gets us to this point.”

‘Perfect for us’

McCommon agrees.

“And MCI has done that consistently, over and over and over. The consistency of everything throughout the company is just as great; the consistency of Rob Lessor and what he has done is just perfect for us. Consistency of the product is always, in my opinion, the best. And we look forward to getting more and more of them in the future and expect the consistency will continue,” he said.

McCommon initially figured buying the 300th MCI coach would coincide with his retirement. If anything, however, this milestone has inspired him to keep going.

“I’m not retiring. The next goal is 400,” he said.

MCI celebrates delivery of its 10,000th J4500 coach with longtime customer Cline Tours

cline tours prices

With the delivery of 10 MCI J4500 coaches, Cline Tours welcomes its 300 th J-Series coach and MCI celebrates its 10,000 th J4500 production unit

Des Plaines, Illinois, USA – August 31, 2022: (TSX: NFI, OTC: NFYEF, TSX: NFI.DB) Motor Coach Industries (“MCI”), a subsidiary of NFI Group Inc. (“NFI”), and North America’s motor coach leader backed by reliable in-field technical expertise, 24/7 roadside assistance, and parts support, announced today the delivery of ten 2023 model year MCI J4500 coaches to Cline Tours, one of the nation’s leading operators in the Southeast, marking Cline Tours’ 300 th motor coach and MCI’s 10,000 th J4500 built on its production line in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

MCI tailors Cline Tour’s J-Series coaches to the company’s specifications. For its newest luxury J4500 coaches, Cline Tours selected the optional 360-degree cameras for a bird’s eye view around the coach; the RGB variable lighting package offering programable interior color options; and the optional next-generation Advanced Driver Assistance System (“ADAS”) by Bendix Wingman Fusion, providing collision mitigation, lane departure, and traffic sign recognition.

Cline Tours has been an MCI customer since 1996, when owner John McCommon acquired the Ridgeland, Mississippi-based tour and charter operator and purchased its first new MCI coach in 2004. Today, Cline Tours has a diverse fleet of 230 revenue-producing vehicles, including mini-buses, school buses, more than one hundred 45-foot MCI J4500 vehicles, and six 35-foot MCI J3500 coaches that operate from nine locations in Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, and Tennessee.

“We are very pleased to celebrate production of our 10,000 th J4500, a big milestone, and to do so with customer Cline Tours,” said Brent Maitland, Vice President, Private Sector Sales and Marketing. “Cline Tours’ consistent selection of MCI’s J-Series speaks to the quality of the model, the relationship between our companies, and MCI’s responsiveness in providing reliable parts service and support. We appreciate the confidence Cline Tours has in MCI and we are committed to continuing our great relationship as Cline Tours continues to grow.”

Building a reputation for safety and service excellence together

Cline Tours chooses the J-Series because of the models’ reliability and fleet uniformity between its locations, according to John McCommon, President of Cline Tours.

“If you see one Cline Tours coach, you’ve seen them all,” McCommon said. “So many of our moves require multiple coaches. It’s important to our customers: They like the same look.”

Providing a young fleet with the newest safety features is another mainstay of Cline Tour’ success. Before COVID-19, the company had a five-year fleet renewal replacement policy and it plans to get back to that as fast as it can, McCommon said. The new clean-diesel J4500 coaches are replacing the 2015 and 2016 models.

Having launched the MCI J4500 in 2001, the model has been the industry’s best-selling model since 2004. Since then, the J4500 has undergone several redesigns, including a recent interior update that provides a more spacious cabin and industry-leading legroom. MCI also introduced a 35-foot version of the J-Series featuring all the styling and performance benefits of the 45-foot J4500. In 2019, Cline Tours was among the first operators to add six MCI J3500 coaches to its fleet.

“With regards to MCI, they are a totally first-class operation,” McCommon said. “We don’t have many issues with our J coaches and if we do, MCI jumps in to fix things. They supported us through COVID, and we’ve had a lot of other factors helping us to be in a substantially much better place today.”

To celebrate the production and delivery milestones, MCI showcased its 10,000 th J4500 coach at the International Motorcoach Coach Group (“IMG”) Strategic Annual Meeting on August 9 -12, 2022, in Arlington, Texas. The meeting brought together IMG’s tour and charter operator members throughout North America, including Cline Tours, for business, educational and networking sessions. IMG members are an elite group of 54 leading operators throughout North America that adhere to strict safety and operational standards to ensure the highest levels of service performance.

The guides we had in all of our destinations were exceptional & the meet & greet & return to the stations went as smooth as clockwork. We had one minor hitch but that was through no fault of Express to Russia..a quick email from our Ipad had the problem resolved immediately We did have some misgivings at the start about doing the booking online ourselves but Elena was wonderful & answered all of our questions promptly & to our satisfaction. We felt comfortable with the whole process. The train trip is wonderful with Mongolia being a "special " place for us! We highly recommend Elena & her company. I am happy to answer any questions any body may wish to ask.

Thank you so very much for organizing our trip. Everything went wonderfully, and we really enjoyed our time in Russia. Moscow was beautiful, Lake Baikal was very cold, yet very fun to swim in, and the DPR Koreans that I met and made friends with in Vladivostok was beyond priceless. The guides you got for us did an exceptional job, and the drivers helped us out a lot as well. The hotels you got for us were great, and the room you got for us in the Vladivostok really made the long stay comfortable. The trains were also very enjoyable as was the Russian hospitality, although we really weren´t expecting people to be so generous or helpful. Overall, the trip was wonderful, and you arranged it magnificently. You really went out of your way to accommodate my schedule and help me with my schoolwork, so I really appreciate it; I couldn´t have done it without you. So once again, thank you for all of your efforts, and hopefully in the future you will be able to help us out again. Take care, and thank you for everything.

A train on Trans-Siberian Railway

Trans-Siberian Train

The main route of the Trans-Siberian Railway begins in Moscow and heads east to Vladivostok passing through Yekaterinburg, Chelyabinsk, Omsk, Novosibirsk, Irkutsk, Ulan Ude, Chita, Blagoveshchensk and Khabarovsk. The length of the route is 9259 km or 5753 miles. The train travels through 7 time zones and takes 8 days to complete without making overnight stops. The Trans-Siberian splits off into a few other fascinating directions as well:

Trans-Mongolian Train

The Trans-Mongolian Line was built from 1940 to 1956 between Ulan-Ude at Lake Baikal’s eastern shore and the Chinese capital Beijing. From Ulan-Ude the tracks go south towards Mongolia, crossing the great Gobi Desert and finally ending up in Beijing. This route is a mere 7867 kilometers long (Moscow - Beijing).

Trans-Manchurian Train

The Trans-Manchurian Line runs on the same route as the Trans-Siberian as far as Tarskaya, which is a few hundred miles east of Baikal. From Tarskaya, the line runs southeast into China near Zabaikalsk and makes its way down to Beijing. This route is a 9001 kilometres long (Moscow - Beijing).

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

Where does the trans-siberian railway start and where does it end.

The Trans-Siberian Railway starts in Moscow and extends all the way to Vladivostok on the Pacific Ocean. This route connects the European part of Russia, the Ural region, Siberia and the Russian Far East.

Are Beijing and Ulan Bator stops along the Trans-Siberian railway?

Beijing and Ulan Bator are parts of Trans-Mongolian railway - an offshoot of the main Trans-Siberian Railway. There are many options to arrange your travel: to visit Ulan Bator and or follow the Trans-Siberian railway to or from Vladivostok.

Can I use the hop-on hop-off principle when traveling by Trans-Siberian train?

Unfortunately, that is not possible. Train tickets in Russia are not open, so you will need a separate ticket with a particular date for each leg of your trip - for example, you may go all the way from Moscow to Vladivostok, but you will only be able to leave the train for short stops at the railway stations. In case if you would like to explore different cities on the way, you will need separate tickets, for example Moscow – Yekaterinburg, Yekaterinburg – Irkutsk, Irkutsk - Vladivostok. We offer carefully planned private tours that will allow you to visit several cities on your way.

Are there showers aboard Trans-Siberian trains?

Most of the Trans-Siberian trains do not have showers, and there are two WCs per each carriage. Please consider it while planning your trip. We recommend to choose shorter distances (that is, to plan more overnight stops in the cities along the way) to avoid the inconvenience of not showering. Another option is to choose the trip on board a more luxurious train which has all the on-board amenities that one might need.

Are meals included on the board of Trans-Siberian express train?

When traveling with RZD regular trains meals are not included. You can easily buy your meals in the restaurant car.  Another option is to buy local specialties from “babushkas” (grandmothers, or simply Russian old ladies) on the short train stops along the way. This is a very authentic way of getting your meals.

What is the most comfortable way to travel on the Trans-Siberian railroad?

There are luxurious trains on the Trans-Siberian railway that are quite different from regular RZD trains and can be described as 5* hotels on wheels. We offer this type of accommodation on the Imperial Russia train where you can enjoy a full board menu, a shower and a comfortable compartment.

The Trans-Siberian Travel Tips

Get ready for your journey with our professional suggestions and enjoy the trip with ease and comfort.

Tips in Europe

What to pack

Pack comfortable pair of shoes and waterproof jacket, since some tours require walking for quite some time or spending time outdoors.

How much to tip

Tipping usually is up to you. Nobody expects tips from you in China, but it's polite to leave around 10% of the bill in Mongolia and Russia.

Russian climate is challenging to predict, and the weather can be windy and rainy, even during summers. Please check the weather beforehand.

When to travel

The Trans-Siberian journey is a tour requiring planning in advance. The best seasons are Summer and Late Spring, as the weather is sunny with fewer rains.

Please check the currency exchange rate beforehand. In Russia is Russian Ruble, in Mongolia - tugrik (you can change money for local currency straight upon arrival), in China - yuan.

Leave space in your luggage for famous souvenirs from each country: matryoshka and caviar from Russia, carpets and woolen sweaters from Mongolia, silk and green tea from China.
