New London is a Thames River port city in Connecticut USA (New London County) with population around 30,000 (metro around 280,000/grouping 21 towns into Norwich-New London). Port New London (at the river's mouth) in the 19th century was one of the world's three largest seaports handling whaling ships - together with Massachusetts' ports Nantucket and New Bedford .

As cruise port, New London CT is the gateway to Mystic CT (accessed via bus tours) where tourists visit the Mystic Seaport Museum (1929-established) - one of the USA's largest maritime museums. Mystic Seaport is sized ~19 acres / ~7,7 hectares (0,08 km2) and houses numerous late-19th/early-20th-century-built wooden vessels (sailing ships and boats, including whaleships) as well as 60+ fully restored historic (Victorian era) buildings.

New London is visited by smaller-sized cruise ships from the fleets of expedition travel companies like AQV-American Queen Voyages (fka AQSC-American Queen Steamboat Company) and National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions .

Thames River flows south for 15 mi / 24 km from Norwich CT (which is the junction of the rivers Yantic and Shetucket) to New London (right bank) and Groton (left bank). Groton (population around 40,000) was established/separated from New London in 1705. Today, both towns are interconnected via the Gold Star Memorial Bridge (1943-opened/1973-twinned) which by length (1941 m / 6368 ft) and deck area (~93000 m2 / ~1 million ft2) is ranked Connecticut's longest and largest. Gold Star Bridge actually combines two steel truss bridges (each composed of 11 spans), carries 11 highway lanes and its daily traffic is 117000+ vehicles.

New London Harbor also is home to the USCG Station New London (adjacent to Fort Trumbull) which is part of CG Sector Long Island Sound. The city also houses the USCGA (United States Coast Guard Academy/1876-founded) providing education to over 1000 cadets/officers-in-training.

Cruises from/to Newhaven, Connecticut

Newhaven, connecticut cruise port.

New Haven is a coastal city in Connecticut best known as the home of Yale, one of eight Ivy League schools in the United States. The nearby harbor is located on the northern side of the Long Island Sound and is therefore officially part of the New York metropolitan area. New Haven has the historic honor of being the first planned city in the New World and therefore is brimming with history in every corner. It was also the first city with planned tree planting which included many large elms. This led to the stoic, cosmopolitan area being nicknamed “The Elm City.” New Haven is well known for its cuisine, and while there are many prestigious restaurants to match the panache of the local college, they are most known for their pizza, which some critics have dubbed one of the best in the country. The city has culture to spare with many museums, beautiful chapels, and outstanding parks.

  • The Yale University Art Gallery is the oldest college art museum in America. The more than 200,000 holdings are made up of various forms of art from ancient civilizations all the way to the present.
  • Yale’s Peabody Museum of Natural History is an enormous structure jam-packed with learning for the whole family. Their large bird collection is possibly the world’s largest.
  • The Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library has a massive collection of first-edition and rare books and manuscripts. Visitors are welcomed to look at the books and learn the exciting histories of select volumes.
  • The lovely and majestic East Rock Park offers visitors a wide variety of trails ranging in difficulty and a good number of open spaces, great for dates or family outings.

Cruise ships return to New London

connecticut cruise port

New London ― Cruise ships will make multiple stops in New London this spring through October, giving passengers time to explore the city and other local destinations.

The city announced Monday that American Cruise Lines ships, accommodating 90 to 100 passengers, will visit New London eight times, starting Wednesday.

The ships will dock at City Pier as part of the American Cruise Lines’ Yankee Seaports Cruise, an eight-day cruise from Boston to New York. Passengers will have opportunities to see New London and visit the Lyman Allyn Art Museum, Thames River Water Taxi, Submarine Force/USS Nautilus Museum, and Mystic Seaport Museum.

Dockmaster Barbara Neff will arrange logistics for the trips and give passengers gift bags.

Cruise ships visited New London in April 2022 when two cruise ships, from the American Queen Voyages line, made stops.

“I’m happy with any opportunity to bring new visitors to New London, but especially now with our downtown streetscape improvements evolving, new restaurants opening and renovations continuing on a number of buildings,” Mayor Michael Passero said in a statement. “With State Pier filling up again with offshore wind turbine components for Revolution Wind and EB across the way, they will see New London’s role as a center of the maritime, or ‘blue,’ economy in New England.”

Cruise ship visits

The following visits are scheduled: May 8-10; May 29-31; June 27-29; Oct. 3; Oct. 7; Oct. 10–11; Oct. 16-18; Oct. 24.

State pier terminal in the port of new london.

The Connecticut Port Authority and State of Connecticut, together with the offshore wind development joint venture of Ørsted and Eversource, have invested $310 million to redevelop the Authority’s State Pier Terminal in the Port of New London. Ørsted and Eversource have contributed $100 million to the project. The Terminal began assembly and marshaling operations in 2023.

As a result of this combined investment in the terminal, Connecticut is at the forefront of the new American offshore wind industry. The State Pier Terminal is the only active East Coast offshore wind marshaling terminal with unobstructed access to the ocean.

State Pier Terminal is already supporting the assembly and delivery of approximately 160 turbines for three offshore wind projects that will provide power to Connecticut, New York, and Rhode Island. Once installed, these projects will have an estimated output of 1,760 MW — enough to power more than 1 million homes.

Staging and assembly operations at the terminal in support of the South Fork Wind project have created more than 75 well-paying jobs, a figure that is expected to nearly double over the following year, as deployment of Revolution Wind kicks off in 2024.

connecticut cruise port

Project Highlights

  • State-sponsored studies for decades recommended improvements to the terminal to ensure it serve as a significant driver of the state’s maritime economy. These studies also recommended that improvements be funded through a public-private partnership with a long-term lessee serving as a base of revenue generation. That exact scenario is now in place.
  • The infrastructure upgrades have transformed State Pier into a modern, heavy-lift-capable marine terminal that meets the staging and assembly (marshaling) requirements of the offshore wind industry and make the site available for a wider range of traditional cargo than ever before.
  • The upgraded terminal includes two heavy-lift platforms, each capable of handling loads of 5,000 pounds per square foot (psf). The rest of the terminal’s load bearing capacity has been enhanced to 3,000psf.
  • The improvements benefit the port’s long-term growth by increasing the terminal’s capacity to accommodate heavy-lift cargo for years to come while maintaining its freight rail link.

Offshore Wind Marshaling

Three offshore wind projects, totaling more than 1,760MW, are already scheduled to be delivered from State Pier Terminal:

  • South Fork Wind , which is currently being assembled and marshaled from State Pier, will provide 132 MW of clean, sustainable energy to power 70,000 homes on the South Fork of Long Island, New York. South Fork Wind began delivering first power to the State of New York in 2023;
  • Revolution Wind (304MW, State of Connecticut and 400MW, State of Rhode Island) will provide 704 MW of clean, sustainable energy to power 350,000 homes. Assembly and marshaling in support of Revolution Wind is scheduled to begin at the Terminal in 2024; and
  • Sunrise Wind (924 MW, State of New York) will provide 924 MW of clean, sustainable energy to power nearly 600,000 homes. Sunrise Wind is scheduled to be operational in 2025.

The first U.S.-built wind turbine installation vessel, Dominion’s Charybdis, is expected to be sea ready in 2025 and will deploy first out of State Pier Terminal to support construction of Revolution Wind and Sunrise Wind.

When not supporting offshore wind staging and assembly operations, the terminal will be marketed to other commercial customers for maximum heavy-lift cargo utilization.

Local Waters. Global Solutions.

Connecticut is home to three deepwater ports (Bridgeport, New Haven, and New London) and a multitude of small harbors, rail lines, and interstate highways crisscrossing the state. Connecticut is uniquely located at the intersection of maritime access and distribution networks, and a thriving maritime industry in Connecticut means stronger economic growth across each of these assets.

The Connecticut Port Authority is overseeing new investments in infrastructure, dredging and intermodal terminal capabilities that are expanding the foundation of Connecticut’s maritime industry and building a thriving network of efficient, customizable transportation solutions.
