April Cruise FAQs

If guaranteed sunshine is a must for your springtime cruise, it’s best to sail down to the equator. Itineraries including the Canary Islands, the southern Mediterranean and Hawaii are often the most popular at this time because of the excellent weather and laidback lifestyle. But if the weather doesn’t bother you and you’re looking for a great deal on once-in-a-lifetime adventures in far-off countries, then a transatlantic cruise to the likes of Canada or Alaska might be more your speed. Finding your perfect cruise in April couldn’t be easier with so many luxury cruise liners sailing to wonderful destinations all around the world. Plus, the seas should be beginning to calm, so it’s smooth sailing all around!

April is a great time to climb onboard a cruise ship and sail to beautiful destinations. The long school break for Easter means that families can get away for longer and spend some quality time together both on and off the ship. Meanwhile, couples and solo travellers can also get away for great prices at the start and end of the month since it’s still technically out of season for most destinations. Regardless of what type of cruise holiday you’re searching for, April can bring great weather, affordable prices and incredible experiences.

The Easter school holidays and warming temperatures in the most popular destinations across the globe can make April a busy time to set sail on a cruise. That being said, it’s generally not quite as busy as the following summer months. April can be a great time to grab a bargain and miss out on the crowds at the end of the summer in the likes of the Caribbean, New Zealand and Australia.

If you’re after quieter ships, it’s usually best to book a cruise at the beginning or end of the month to avoid the rush of the school holidays in between.

As the Caribbean comes to the end of its dry season, it’s possible that visitors might experience the odd storm at sea. Luckily, any rough sailing shouldn’t last too long! For the best weather and calmest seas, choose itineraries in the most southerly islands like Trinidad and Barbados where temperatures remain in the high 20s and sea conditions are more serene.

Elizabeth Rhodes/Travel + Leisure

For the first time, we’re spotlighting new cruise ships on Travel + Leisure ’s It List, as these exceptional vessels become more and more like floating resorts — celebrity chefs, crystal chandeliers, and Rolex boutiques included.

Explora Journeys’ Explora I

Paul Brady/Travel + Leisure

It’s not every day a new cruise line arrives. The debut of the remarkable Explora I was a moment years in the making for Explora Journeys , the upstart luxury operator that aims to bring a European sensibility to the world of vacations at sea. So far, the project is a smashing success, thanks to the ship’s low-key vibe, standout food and beverage, and intriguing itineraries that visit in-demand ports in Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Caribbean. My own August 2023 trip on Explora I , from Copenhagen to Hamburg, Germany, included fulfilling visits to places such as Oslo and the town of Stavanger, Norway, a gateway to adventurous hiking with a postcard-perfect Old Town. The ship itself was also a destination, with its abundance of outdoor space — including an alfresco fitness center — and pools at seemingly every turn. The 461 suites, all of them with balconies, are filled with luxurious touches such as Frette linens and robes, heated marble floors, and Dyson hair dryers. But Explora I truly shines when it comes to food: During the week I was aboard, it was impossible to find a bad meal — and I was often astonished at the quality of, in particular, the pasta served in the Emporium Marketplace and the sushi on offer at Sakura, two of the nine restaurants aboard. The most ambitious of them all is Anthology, a rotating-chef concept that has seen a residency from seafood whiz Mario Ulaissi, known for his Michelin three-starred restaurant on Italy's Adriatic coast, and that recently welcomed Emma Bengtsson, from Aquavit , in New York City. Much has been made of Explora I ’s Rolex boutique — the first on any cruise ship — but for my money, the other shops on board were more interesting: The company has tapped family-owned businesses around the world to create capsule collections of resort wear, handbags, fragrances, sunglasses, and beautiful gifts that can’t be found elsewhere. From $2,050 per person for a six-day sailing. Accessible ship. — Paul Brady

Oceania Cruises’ Vista

Nick Tortajada/Courtesy of Oceania Cruises

The new Oceania Vista is in a class of its own; no really, it’s the first in Oceania Cruises ’ new Allura class. Of its 11 bars and restaurants, three are entirely new to the Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings–owned brand — including a high-end cocktail spot called Founders’ Bar, serving 26 intricate drinks that use house-made syrups and top-shelf booze like Whistle Pig and parsley-infused Grey Goose. As Oceania levels up, the cruise line has produced a ship that feels more like a floating resort than the vessels that came before. There’s pickleball; a health-conscious restaurant, Aquamar, serving made-to-order salads and pressed juices; and a coffee shop that looks like one in walking distance of my home in L.A. (marble counters, gold accents, leather bar stools) and pulls an espresso shot of similar quality. Vista has more suites than others in the Oceania fleet, too: There are 14 Oceania Suites (up to 1,200 square feet); eight Vista Suites (up to 1,850 square feet); and three Owner’s Suites with Ralph Lauren Home decor and two massive terraces (2,400 square feet). But the most hotel-like touch? A celebrity chef–driven restaurant, Toscana, where Giada De Laurentiis — the ship’s godmother — supplied two recipes for the menu. As someone who watched a lot of Everyday Italian in the early aughts, I was particularly excited to try her signature, Capri-inspired lemon spaghetti, and lemon-cream sauce with grilled shrimp and capers didn’t disappoint. From $2,499 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — Maya Kachroo-Levine

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Grandeur

Courtesy of Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ sixth ship, the Seven Seas Grandeur , sailed its inaugural season in December, joining sibling ships Seven Seas Explorer and Seven Seas Splendor as the newest member of the luxury fleet. The cruise line is a favorite among T+L readers for its gorgeous ships and all-inclusive pricing that covers unlimited shore excursions, dining at specialty restaurants, and even round-trip airfare. Grandeur lives up to its name thanks to stunning, art-filled spaces designed by cruise ship interior experts Studio Dado: signature restaurant Compass Rose is enchanting with interiors inspired by a fairy-tale forest; the Observation Lounge sparkles with an undulating chandelier and swanky bar; and the $11,000-per-night Regent Suite has a private en suite spa and custom Treesse mini pool. As I boarded Grandeur for the ship’s inaugural sailing, I was mesmerized by the grand staircase and glittering chandelier. And with a maximum capacity of 744 guests, I found it easy to take time to myself in the myriad of quiet spots tucked throughout the ship, whether in the Serene Spa and Wellness area, in the Library, or on the Sports Deck overlooking the ocean. Seven restaurants include specialty steakhouse Prime 7, pan-Asian restaurant Pacific Rim, and breakfast and lunch buffet La Veranda, which refines the cruise buffet experience with daily specials like paella and sushi. Several bars and lounges, a pool and hot tubs, a casino, Broadway-style productions, and cooking classes at the Culinary Arts Kitchen make the ship a destination in itself, though guests will want to take advantage of those included excursions on Caribbean, Central American, North American, and European itineraries, ranging from seven to 16 nights, during the ship’s 2024 season. From $4,669 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — Elizabeth Rhodes

Silversea’s Silver Nova

Courtesy of Silversea Cruises

Carrying 728 passengers, Silver Nova is big for the luxury sector, but boasts a hugely important metric: a capacious passenger space ratio — that is, the number of guests relative to the size of the ship. Simply put, this ship offers more elbow room per passenger than almost any other cruise vessel. Silver Nova is wrapped in glass, with an asymmetrical layout; the funnel is positioned off-center, so is the pool, offering an expansive, uncluttered pool deck. Many features of the brand-new ship recall previous Silversea successes, my favorite of which is the S.A.L.T. (Sea And Land Taste) program, expanded for Silver Nova . S.A.L.T. perks include a gorgeous, sea-facing lab for hands-on culinary lessons (at no additional cost), plus a new concept, the Chef’s Table, where an 11-course menu is prepared for just 24 diners. All facets of the S.A.L.T. ecosystem, including ingredients, a bar, lectures, and shore excursions, are keyed to the region Nova is sailing. While food is a drawing card for Silver Nova , accommodations also received a revamp. Tied to the theme of bringing the outside in, there are brilliant new suites found in the aft starboard corner of the ship, with wraparound balconies revealing a 270-degree view.  This is where you can tuck me in when I win the lottery and head off on a world cruise. But until then, Silver Nova will summer in Alaska and spend northern hemisphere winters in Australia and New Zealand, places where top-deck views should prove ceaselessly rewarding. From $3,250 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — David Swanson

Voyages are going farther

With more than two years of missed travel opportunities, the rise of remote work , and a collective human desire to make our moments count more than ever, it's no surprise that grand voyages— sailings longer than 21 days —are growing in popularity. “COVID-19 saw a massive reevaluation of life quality, so a great experience is critical,” says Tom Baker of the travel agency CruiseCenter. When Holland America Line launched its 73-day grand Africa voyage this year, it sold out so fast that the company created another one for 2023, which will take passengers from the beaches of Zanzibar to historic Petra. This month, Oceania Cruises kicked off an epic 218-day voyage from Miami. Seabourn's multicontinent grand voyage in 2023 will become two 80-day adventures in 2024. And Silversea will operate five times as many itineraries of 21 days or longer next year than it did in 2019. Even river cruises , traditionally a week long, are offering longer sailings: After its inaugural 2023 Seven River Journey Through Europe trips sold out almost instantly, AmaWaterways created two more of its 46-night itineraries and two 49-night itineraries, and Uniworld Boutique River Cruises will launch its nine-country, 47-day Rivers of the World offering next year. “Think experiencing the Pyramids of Giza one day, and then the Moulin Rouge,” says Ellen Bettridge, Uniworld's president and CEO. As lines invest in enhanced digital connectivity via SpaceX's Starlink, the trend will continue to grow. “Smart lines will discount this to attract young affluent cruisers,” says Cruises By Linda's Linda Allen-Speer . Getting more when you step on shore

With passengers craving more meaningful ways to explore, cruise lines are sharpening their partnerships and extending the time guests spend on land. “It's now about how to make your travel experience exclusive, unique, and ‘local,’ ” says Jill Jergel of the agency Frontiers Travel. This year, river-cruising giant Uniworld began bundling ship and train experiences with boutique rail-tour company Golden Eagle Luxury Trains on its Danube sailings. Guests ride the train inland through Central Europe for five days before hopping on the ship in Vienna; Uniworld has added two more departures for 2023. Next year, Ponant and Smithsonian Journeys will offer co-branded sailings through Panama, where Smithsonian experts like climate specialist Steve Paton will guide passengers through hard-to-reach areas like the San Blas archipelago. Regent Seven Seas Cruises , which has been seeking ways to extend the guest experience before and after sailings, plans several free add-ons for 2023, including three days with exclusive access to boutique wine estates around Cape Town for passengers on cruises originating in South Africa . There is also great news for those wanting to spend more time in their departure ports. Many lines now include a hotel room the night before a sailing in their rate. It's a perk that lets passengers explore a little more—and an insurance policy against the continued volatility of the airline industry. — Erin Florio

Luxury is at a new level

Many lines— Ponant, Silversea —have a reputation for offering a champagne-and-caviar experience on board. But two new players are upping the game for luxury at sea. Think all suites, more time in port, and food packed with Michelin-style pizzazz. Hotel titan The Ritz-Carlton has long been in the sailing space with its Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, but this October, it added the high-touch sophistication of the 298-passenger Evrima . Imagine the 624-foot vessel as a floating Ritz-Carlton resort sailing the Caribbean, the Americas, and the Med with a personal concierge assigned to every suite and a splurge-worthy tasting menu created by chef Sven Elverfeld of Germany's three-Michelin-starred Aqua . Next May, Explora Journeys , a new cruise concept from the Aponte family, founders of MSC Cruises , will launch the Explora 1, which will offer oceanfront suites and private terraces to all 900 passengers. A major focus will be guest well-being, a response to new needs emerging from the pandemic and other societal changes. “We are creating more immersive experiences in destination and the people you meet,” says CEO Michael Ungerer. For example, Explora 1 might spend up to three days in ports of call, like Istanbul, rather than blowing through. No itinerary will ever be repeated. “With Explora 1, it is all about the pace, and we know more time in port is what matters,” says Anne Scully , a travel adviser with Embark Beyond. The ship has four pools, ten lounges, and nine restaurants, so days at sea will never risk feeling like idle time. — Fran Golden

The Cruise News and Trends We're Excited About in 2023

Return to Asia

“With travel spending up and two years of pent-up demand, Asia , which is a longer haul and a bigger investment, is on the front burner,” says Condé Nast Traveler specialist Angela Turen , of Churchill & Turen. The continent began reopening to international cruises in July 2022, when Royal Caribbean arrived in Malaysia, and the big lines have been moving in or expanding there since. Japan has been especially popular; in addition to the new Ponant sailings in the Seto Inland Sea launching in May 2023, Regent and Silversea are both offering new itineraries that circumnavigate the island nation, and Holland America Line will redeploy its Westerdam to Japan after it sailed out COVID-19 in Australia. Singapore expects to hit its pre-COVID passenger numbers in 2023, thanks in part to new itineraries like Viking's 15-day Bali-to-Singapore voyage, while RC's Spectrum of the Seas added two new 12-night itineraries for next year that visit countries like Vietnam and Thailand. “When will China reopen?” remains the big question, but most observers expect it to happen sometime next year. — E.F.

Five new, action-packed cruise itineraries for 2023

From exploring the capitals of Gambia and Senegal to combining river and ocean cruising on the east coast of North America, here are the most action-packed new itineraries for the year ahead.

Whether it's exploring a tropical paradise aboard an extravagant superyacht or diving head-first into an untamed wilderness while enjoying the comforts of an art deco-inspired ship, these thrilling new cruises are worth getting excited about. We've picked five of our favourite action-packed itineraries for 2023.

1. Explore the volcanic islands of the Pacific

There’s nothing quite like sailing into the lagoon that surrounds tiny Bora Bora, little more than the tip of an extinct volcano, and leaving the ship for a walk up the lush hillsides. The Reefs & Volcanic Isles: Tahiti to Fiji voyage is a 16-day South Seas adventure with Scenic’s extravagant new superyacht Scenic Eclipse II, a vessel deft enough to reach areas larger ships can’t (and with its own helicopter and submarine); not least Vava’u, the Tongan archipelago of 40 coral islands, the breathtaking lagoon of Aitutaki Atoll in the Cook Islands. It starts with two days in Papeete, Tahiti’s capital, with its black volcanic beaches, and ends with two Fijian islands. Sails on 29 March 2024, from £10,980 including flights.

Mount Otemanu, in Bora Bora, can be visited on Scenic's Reefs & Volcanic Isles: Tahiti to Fiji voyage.

2. Sail the length of North America's Atlantic coastline

Not only does this new Canada & Atlantic Coastline voyage from Viking Cruises mix the sun of the southern US and the wild greenery of eastern Canada, it also manages to combine both ocean and river cruising. Heading north, it sails from the beach lined Fort Lauderdale in Florida and calls at sophisticated Charleston, South Carolina, as well as Norfolk, Virginia, before sailing past the famous Statue of Liberty into New York City.

After one day at sea, it all changes as you reach the stunning Canadian province of Nova Scotia, before heading up the St Lawrence Seaway into Quebec City. From here, the river heads on and passes through Montreal, eventually reaching Lake Ontario and the towers of Toronto, where guests will have the opportunity to see the sights of the city on bike. The luxurious Viking Octantis, a polar expedition ship launched in 2022, is a dream with its contemporary Scandi design and modern amenities. The trip also includes expert-led excursions. Sails on 13 and 18 April, and 15 and 26 September 2023, from £8,095, including flights.

Charleston, South Carolina, can be visited on the Viking cruise.

3. Immerse yourself in Alaskan wilderness

If you’re heading for Alaska, you want to do it right. Summer 2023 is the first season there for Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth , which means luxury and art deco elegance, but also an old-school air of exploration. Each of seven cruises round trips from Vancouver features a famed adventurer telling tales of derring-do and wilderness wonders.

The first stars Bear Grylls, former Royal Marine, climber of Everest and star of seven seasons of Running Wild on the National Geographic channel. This is his first Alaskan visit since he took then-US president Barack Obama there for the show in 2015, and his first cruise speaking engagement. Names on other sailings which cruise the Inside Passage and tick off Alaskan wonders such as Glacier Bay National Park, Tracy Arm Fjord and Hubbard Glacier include Felicity Aston MBE, the first woman to ski alone across the Antarctic, and British maritime archaeologist   Mensun Bound, who discovered Shackleton’s ship Endurance in Antarctica in 2022.

After listening to the wit and wisdom of the engaging speakers, not to mention enjoying the evening West End-style performances, the Queen Elizabeth is the place to relax think smart dining, a conservatory and even a croquet lawn. The 12-night Alaska cruise with Bear Grylls sails from Vancouver on 8 June 2023 and starts at £1,189, cruise-only. Return flights from £1,100.

Muscat, the capital of Oman, is a stop on Windstar's Sparkling Sands & Cities of the Persian Gulf sailing.

4. Visit the Persian Gulf's enticing cities

Windstar starts a winter of Arabia cruises in November 2023. The 10-day Sparkling Sands & Cities of the Persian Gulf sails between Dubai to Muscat, Oman. Highlights include Doha, the capital of Qatar, where the extravagant cruise terminal featuring an art museum and gardens is only a short stroll from the historic Souq Waqif market.

There are also two days in Abu Dhabi, plus calls at Ras Al-Khaimah, Khasab in Oman’s Musandam enclave, Manama, capital of Bahrain, Damman in Saudi Arabia and Sir Bani Yas, an 11-mile island that’s a nature reserve with Arabian oryx, cheetahs and hyenas. Sails between 3 December 2023 and 2 March 2024, from £4,999 all-inclusive, including flights.

5. Go river cruising in Central Africa

World Voyager is the first ocean expedition ship from European river cruise company Nicko. The 13-day Cape Verde and Africa cruise sails from the tourist haven of Tenerife deep into the Atlantic for visits to four of the Cape Verde islands, then it’s off the tourist trail for days in Banjul, Gambia and Dakar, Senegal. The ship is new and modern with a pool and an auditorium for films and lectures from experts. Sails on 22 April 2023, from £4,895, all-inclusive, including flights.

Family of Ralph Yarl files lawsuit against Andrew Lester, homeowners association after 2023 shooting

cruise nation april 2023

The family of Ralph Yarl, a Black teenager who was shot in April 2023 after going to the wrong house in Kansas City, Missouri, has filed a lawsuit against the white homeowner who shot him.

The lawsuit, filed Monday by Yarl's mother, Cleopatra Nagbe, in Clay County Circuit Court, accuses Andrew Lester, 85, of being careless when he shot Yarl in the head and arm without warning on April 13, 2023. Yarl, who was 16 at the time, was severely injured and suffered a traumatic brain injury.

“At all times relevant, Plaintiff (Ralph Yarl) never posed or issued a threat to Defendant, Andrew Lester,” the lawsuit says. "At no time relevant to the circumstances giving rise to this litigation did Plaintiff (Ralph Yarl) do anything that warranted Defendant, Andrew Lester, brandishing a firearm at him."

Yarl's family also is suing Lester's homeowners association, Highland Acres Homes Association, saying the association was aware of or should have been aware of Lester's "propensity for violence, access to dangerous weapons and racial animus," according to the lawsuit. The suit says the association had a duty to exercise reasonable care "regarding the use of a firearm in and on the properties making up the Association."

Lester was charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action. If convicted, he could face life in prison.

Lest pleaded not guilty to the charges in April 2023, but the case was moved to the state's Circuit Court for trial because the county's lower court cannot try felonies. He again pleaded not guilty to the charges in September 2023, and the trial was scheduled to begin Oct. 7 this year.

The shooting drew national attention, sparking widespread protests and calls for Lester’s arrest. The incident, along with several other wrong-place shootings last year, also reignited debate about the country's "stand your ground" laws , which govern a person's right to use reasonable force − including deadly force − in self-defense.

Maps and timeline: What we know about Ralph Yarl, 16, being shot by a homeowner in Kansas City

What happened during the shooting?

On April 13, 2023, Yarl was going to pick up his younger brothers and mistakenly went to the wrong house, USA TODAY reported. After Yarl rang the doorbell, Lester opened the door and shot Yarl in the left forehead and right arm.

Yarl got up and ran to three different houses for help, according to a  GoFundMe  created by Faith Spoonmore, who identified herself as his aunt. Officers responded to a call that a teenager was shot in front of a residence by a homeowner around 10 p.m., Kansas City police said.

Yarl suffered a life-threatening injury but was stable and released from the hospital a few days later, according to police. A firearm was discovered at the home, and Lester was detained. He was released just two hours after he was arrested.

His release  sparked criticism from attorneys Ben Crump and Lee Merritt , who were retained by Yarl's family. Lester surrendered to police on April 18 and was released on a $200,000 bond.

Merritt called for the shooting to be investigated as a hate crime. At the time, Clay County prosecutor Zachary Thompson said there was a “racial component” to the shooting, but nothing in the charging documents said the shooting was racially motivated.

Ralph Yarl 'suffered and sustained permanent injuries,' lawsuit says

According to the lawsuit, Yarl “suffered and sustained permanent injuries, endured pain and suffering of a temporary and permanent nature, experienced disability and losses of normal life activities, was obligated to spend large sums of money for medical and attention and suffered other losses and damages.”

Yarl's family raised more than $3.4 million from the GoFundMe fundraiser to pay for his medical bills and therapy. The teen is a musician who has earned accolades and plays multiple instruments, according to the GoFundMe.

His goal is to attend Texas A&M University to study chemical engineering, the GoFundMe said. After recovering from his injuries, the 17-year-old walked at a brain injury awareness event with more than 1,000 people in Kansas City last May.

Cruise ship season is officially underway in British Columbia. The season kicked off with the arrival of Norwegian Bliss on April 3 — the first of 318 ships that are scheduled to dock in Victoria this year. Victoria saw a record 970,000 passengers arrive in 2023, with more expected in 2024.

The cruise industry was badly hit by the suspension of cruise operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Fuelled by heavy consumer demand and industry innovation, cruising has made a comeback. It is now one of the fastest-growing sectors, rebounding even faster than international tourism.

While many predicted a difficult recovery , a recent industry report shows a remarkable post-pandemic rebound . Two million more people went on cruises in 2023 versus 2019, with demand predicted to top 35 million in 2024.

But environmental issues plague the sector’s revival. Are they an indication of rough seas ahead? Or will a responsive industry mean smooth sailing?

Cruising has long been criticized for being Janus-faced : on the surface, cruises are convenient, exciting holidays with reputed economic benefits. But lurking underneath are its negative environmental and social impacts .

Unprecedented growth

Newly constructed mega-ships are part of the industry’s unprecedented growth. Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas is the largest cruise ship in the world , with 18 decks, 5,600 passengers and 2,350 crew.

MSC World Europa with 6,700 passengers and 2,100 crew, P&O Arvia with 5,200 passengers and 1,800 crew, and Costa Smeralda with 6,600 passengers and 1,500 crew also claim mega-ship status.

Those sailing to and from Alaska via Victoria will be some of the estimated 700,000 passengers departing Seattle on massive ships three sport fields in length.

Baby boomers represent less than 25 per cent of cruise clientele. Gen X, Millennials and Gen Z have more interest than ever in cruising, with these younger markets being targeted as the future of cruise passengers.

Two women in bathing suits lie on reclined lounge chairs on the deck of a ship

The Cruise Lines International Association asserts that 82 per cent of those who have cruised will cruise again . To entice first-timers and meet the needs of repeat cruisers, companies are offering new itineraries and onboard activities, from simulated skydiving and bumper cars to pickleball and lawn bowling.

Solo cruise travel is also on the rise, and multi-generational family cruise travel is flourishing, explaining the extensive variety of cabin classes, activities and restaurants available on newly constructed and retrofitted ships.

However, only a few cruise ports are large enough to dock mega ships. Cruise lines are responding by offering off-beat experiences and catering more to the distinct desires of travellers.

In doing so, there is a move towards smaller vessels and luxury liners , river cruises and expedition cruising . Leveraging lesser-known ports that can only be accessed via compact luxury ships offers more mission-driven, catered experiences for the eco-minded traveller.

Cruising and environmental costs

Cruise ship visitors are known to negatively impact Marine World Heritage sites. While most sites regulate ballast water and wastewater discharge, there are concerns about ship air emissions and wildlife interactions .

Cruise ship journeys along Canada’s west coast, for example, are leaving behind a trail of toxic waste . A study by environmental organization Friends of the Earth concluded that a cruise tourist generates eight times more carbon emissions per day than a land tourist in Seattle.

Also, a rise in expedition cruising means more negative impacts (long-haul flights to farther ports, less destination management in fragile ecosystems, last chance tourism ) and a rise in carbon dioxide emissions.

Toxic air pollutants from cruise ships around ports are higher than pre-pandemic levels, leaving Europe’s port cities “choking on air pollution .” Last year, Europe’s 218 cruise ships emitted as much sulphur oxides as one billion cars — a high number, considering the introduction of the International Maritime Organization’s sulphur cap in 2020 .

Rough seas ahead or smooth sailing?

Royal Caribbean said its Icon of the Seas is designed to operate 24 per cent more efficiently than the international standard for new ships. International Maritime Organization regulations must be 30 per cent more energy-efficient than those built in 2014.

But despite the industry using liquefied natural gas instead of heavy fuel oil and electric shore power to turn off diesel engines when docking, industry critics still claim the cruise sector is greenwashing . As a result, some cities like Amsterdam, Barcelona and Venice are limiting or banning cruise ships .

Environmental critiques remain strong, especially for polar expeditions . The industry must respond and increase sustainability efforts , but their measures remain reactive (i.e., merely meeting international regulations) rather than proactive. In addition, by sailing their ships under flags of convenience , cruise companies evade taxes and demonstrate an unwillingness to abide by a nation’s environmental, health and labour regulations.

In any case, environmental concerns are escalating along with the industry. Travel agents and industry figures are aware of these impacts and should help promote cruise lines that demonstrate a commitment to sustainable practices.

Local residents need to expect more from port authorities and local governments in order to cope with cruise tourism . Cruise consumers should recognize the environmental costs of cruising, and demand accountability and transparency from cruise lines.

Above and beyond...

I contacted Holland America yesterday to see if they could provide some assistance at embarkation for my husband, who has limited mobility. They sent me a special needs form to fill in and a couple of hours later I heard from Rachel Sullivan at Cruise Nation. She offered to sort things for me, and this morning sent confirmation that all the necessary arrangements had been made. I am really impressed with her prompt and caring assistance.

I had a problem with my Computer printing off my Travel Documents. Mainly caused by myself through lack of knowledge of the computer. Two young ladies spent an awful amount of time sorting it out and I am so thankful to Sally for what She did. I was getting worried and could not have been better looked after. Sally you have made us so happy and are looking forward to joining the ship.

Excellent service

Excellent service. Had a higher price quoted by msc directly and after we chatted that the price on their website I was viewing at the same time was lower, she got back to max and indeed got them to honour the Bella upgrade price.

Talking to an understanding patient human being!

It was so comforting to talk with a 'human being' instead of put into online 'chat' or cold emails. A person who was understanding of my anxiety over technology and empathic to my personal situation. What a difference to have supportive 'human interaction' in this faceless world of forced technology.

Failure to process refund for cruise…

Failure to process refund for cruise disruption in a timely fashion. We were unfortunate enough to be booked on an NCL cruise that was curtailed by 2 days and so were advised by the cruise company we would be issued a refund of £421 and this payment was made on 21st March to the travel agent that we booked through ( which was cruise nation). It is now April 8th and we still have not received these funds in our account and cruise nation continue to benefit by illegally holding onto money which they do not rightfully own. Either their finance department is incredibly inefficient /inept or this is a deliberate ploy to make some interest on money to which they are not entitled. To have a holiday that was totally different to the journey we were sold is one thing but then to fail to return monies owed is downright dishonest. Steer well clear of this company as once they have your money they don’t care how poor the final holiday you experience is and if any refunds are due ,you will have to fight tooth and nail ,and wait many weeks, before you get it back!

Date of experience : April 08, 2024

Thank you for your review, we have taken a look into this for you and can see that since this you have been contacted by our customer relations department and a refund has been processed. We will certainly take your feedback on board & are sorry that your sailing was changed we will certainly pass your feedback over to the cruise line

Lovely staff at Cruise Nation

I have always found the staff at Cruise Nation most helpful and obliging. They are part of the lovely experience of choosing and booking my next cruise. My request today to make an alteration was dealt with by Rachel who was efficient and friendly. Thanks Cruise Nation!

Are you planning a cruise for summer or fall? Brace yourself for a shock

Gene Sloan

Are you looking to take a cruise between now and the end of the year? We have some bad news: You might have a tough time finding a cabin — at least if you want a specific type of room on a specific ship.

Bookings for cruises have been on fire for months , pacing at record levels. As a result, nearly nine of every 10 cabins available for 2024 sailings are already booked, the top executive of one of the world's biggest cruise companies revealed Thursday.

"We only have about 12% load factors left to build for the year," Jason Liberty, Royal Caribbean Group CEO, noted in a conference call with Wall Street analysts, using a term that refers to the percentage of cabin space that is available on ships.

For more cruise news, guides and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Liberty said bookings for cruises accelerated in April beyond an already blistering pace set in the first three months of the year. The surge occurred despite a rapidly dwindling amount of open cabin space for 2024 sailings.

"Bookings have consistently outpaced last year throughout the entire first quarter and through April, even though we have significantly fewer staterooms left to sell," Liberty said.

Royal Caribbean Group is the parent company of Royal Caribbean , the world's biggest cruise line, as well as Celebrity Cruises and Silversea Cruises . It also owns a partial interest in Germany-based cruise brands TUI Cruises and Hapag-Lloyd Cruises.

Liberty was only referring to Royal Caribbean Group brands when making the comments about bookings. But other cruise companies, including Carnival Corporation and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, have reported similar strength in bookings in recent months.

As one of the biggest cruise brands in the world, Royal Caribbean Group also serves as a bellwether of sorts for the industry when it comes to booking strength.

The result: soaring cruise fares

With demand for cruises at record levels and cabin supply quickly disappearing, cruise lines have been able to raise prices significantly in recent months on top of sharp price increases throughout 2023.

During Thursday's conference call with Wall Street analysts, Liberty said the bookings that customers at its brands made during the first three months of the year were "at much higher prices than 2023" fares.

Liberty also noted that yields at Royal Caribbean Group brands for cruises that customers took during the first three months of the year were up 19.3% as compared to the same months in 2023. That was nearly four percentage points higher than the company was predicting just a few months ago.

Related: 6 ways to get a deal on a cruise

Yield is a measure of how much money cruise lines make per passenger.

"The first quarter was tremendous, sending us well on our path to a year that is significantly better than we expected just a few months back," Liberty said.

Liberty attributed the strong growth in bookings and pricing in part to the line's rollout of the record-size Icon of the Seas in January, which has been a huge hit . He also noted strong bookings and pricing across the entire fleets of its brands for all key itineraries.

cruise nation april 2023

Both new ships and older ships are in hot demand, Liberty suggested, with demand particularly strong from North American travelers. Roughly 80% of all Royal Caribbean Group bookings this year have come from North Americans — an unusually large percentage.

The company is also seeing a surge in first-time cruisers, a category known in the industry as the "new to cruise" market.

"Our addressable market is expanding, and 'new to cruise' continues to grow, increasing 16% year over year," Liberty said. "These guests are discovering our differentiated vacation experiences and are increasingly returning to us as we see repeat rates over 30% higher compared to 2019."

Liberty also noted the company was drawing more younger customers, including a growing number of millennials.

"Millennials and younger generations have gained 11 percentage points share compared to 2019, and today almost one in two guests are millennials or younger," he said.

Cruise bookings are surging in part because vacationers are seeing the value in cruising as compared to other types of vacations that involve land travel, Liberty suggested. Liberty and other cruise executives believe cruises are priced significantly below the level of land resorts on a like-for-like basis, even after the sharp increases in cruise fares over the past year.

"Despite our ability to narrow the gap [in pricing] to land-based vacations in the last 12 months, cruising still remains an exceptional value proposition," Liberty said.

Also driving cruise bookings is the fact that a strong economy has consumers feeling flush and willing to spend on vacations, Liberty suggested. He noted that consumer sentiment is high, "bolstered by resilient labor markets, wage growth, stabilizing inflation and record-high household net worth."

In addition, "consumer preferences continue to shift toward spend on experiences, particularly priority for travel," he said.
