Beaune travel guide

Visit Beaune (Burgundy-Franche-Comté, France)

Beaune is a town in the centre of the Burgundy region of France, between Dijon and Autun . Best known for the wine produced in the region, Beaune is a pleasant town to explore when you are in the region.

Explore Beaune

The old town in Beaune is quite compact, based around the medieval hospital complex, and with several streets of shops and old buildings surrounding the center.

Castle in Beaune

The principal attraction in Beaune is the Hotel-Dieu. Found in the heart of the walled old-town of Beaune, the Hotel-Dieu was a hospital in the 15th century, and has now been immaculately preserved and renovated. I can't help wondering if a 15th century hospital was really quite so immaculate at that time...

On entering the Hotel-Dieu, first walk around the cobbled courtyard to admire the steep decorated rooves on the arcaded buildings, then enter the carefully furnished kitchen and ward interiors - in particular see the grand 'salle des malades', refurbished as it might have appeared 500 years ago.

Other highlights in the Hotel-Dieu complex include the wells, the kitchens and the ancient pharmacy.

Elsewhere in Beaune you can visit the Church of Notre-Dame, which has some impressive 15th century wallhangings (tapestries) relating the story of the life of the Virgin Mary, and the clock tower, dating from the 12th century, is a classified historic monument.

On the edges of Beaune you can spend some time strolling around the ramparts: the walk around the ramparts is about two kilometres long.

En route you will see some medieval half-timbered houses as well as the Porte Saint-Nicholas, one of the original gateways that controlled access to Beaune town centre; the Chateau de Beaune; and the gardens and statues of the Theatre de Verdure and the Square des Lions.

If you don't want to follow the entire walk around the ramparts, the part between the Porte Saint-Nicholas to the north and the castle to the east is the most interesting section.

There are several museums in Beaune including:

  • the Museum of Wine (find it to see the building even if you don't plan to enter - the 15th century building was once the meeting place for the Burgundy dukes);
  • the Musee des Beaux-Arts in the Convent of the Ursulines;
  • the Jules-Marey Museum (for early video photography)

Wine enthusiasts will want to follow the Burgundy Wine route between Beaune and Dijon, of course visiting the villages and vineyards such as Nuits-Saint-Georges along the route.

Even if you are not interested in wine be sure to visit Dijon . About 40 kilometres north-east of Beaune it is our favourite town in Burgundy and a visit is highly recommended.

The Fairytale French Town: A Guide to Beaune, France

WOW GUIDE TO BEAUNE | WORLD OF WANDERLUST

Your Guide to Beaune

France’s fairytale town.

There are few times in life I have been so convinced that I have stepped into a fairytale picture book and suffice it so say that Beaune is one such place I believe magic has occurred. Just like the towns of a Disney film or my all-time favourite film Chocolat, Beaune has an otherworldly appeal unlike any other French town . Dainty and prettier than a postcard, this town is just a few hours from Paris and should be a staple in any French discovery tour. So, what are you waiting for? Here is your complete guide to Beaune!

France Map | Beaune by World of Wanderlust

Musee de l’Hotel-Dieu

At the centre of town is Beaune’s most iconic architectural structure: the musee de l’Hotel-Dieu. This former hospital built in the 15th century is without a doubt the town’s most recognisable structure and a good point of reference as you peruse the winding streets that are not only illogically formed, but extremely uneven – so watch where you’re going!

Saturday Markets

Every Saturday the small towns and villages of France come to life with the sights, sounds and smells of market day. Beaune is no exception. Whether you’re looking for smelly cheese or one cute dog watch, there’s plenty of taste testers and pooch’s to admire as you wade through the crowds from one vendor to the next.

Your guide to Beaune: Eats & Drinks

As the wine capital of Burgundy, there’s plenty of great drops to enjoy and equally good food to be found in a handful of restaurant categories. The most memorable restaurants I found were out in the countryside – housed in real kitchens, countryside manors or as roadtrip stops with thanks to the popularity of the Michelin guide in France. In Beaune itself I often found myself passing time in small cafes and patisseries, fuelling up with carbs before a day cycling through the French countryside (as athletic as that may sound, I was often cycling from one cellar door to the next).

Upper Coffee Shop

This cute little coffee shop is a personal favourite in town. The coffee is good (surprisingly still a difficult feat in France) and the prices are friendly like the staff.

Patisserie Fabien Berteau

Before arriving to Beaune I had done some prior research to discover where to find the best macarons: Patisserie Fabien Berteau was the unanimous winner. As it turns out the macarons were immemorable, but the tangy lemon tart was one of the best I’ve ever had and subsequently lasted an entirety of 4 seconds in my hands before it was completely devoured.

Around the Region

As Beaune is the wine capital of Burgundy, there are many vineyards and open cellar doors to experience the regional wines in their many varietals. I would suggest hiring a bike for the day, asking for a map of the region, and setting off to cycle between towns and chateaus – stopping at wherever tickles your fancy along the way.

Check-In: Hotel Le Cep

For my stay in town, I checked in to the glorious Hotel Le Cep – a highly celebrated family-owned hotel located just a few minutes from the centre of town. Each of the rooms are decorated in unique colours and fabrics, making for a unique experience every time you visit.

Best time of year to visit Beaune

September through November are considered the best times of year to visit Beaune and theBurgundy region, though I would argue there really is no bad time to visit. My first visit to Beaune in September was full of sunshine and clear blue skies and my most recent visit was more grey and moody in April. If you’re hoping for the best weather, June-August are the summer months but also the busiest. Thus to have the best of both worlds, the best time of year is between summer and winter in September, October or November.

I visited the city of Beaune on a 7 day river cruise with Avalon Waterways . All opinions and photos are my own and I’d highly recommend taking the time to enjoy a river cruise for those preferring a more relaxed approach to visiting France!

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Côte-d'Or

Beaune - Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Côte-d'Or

A Town of Art and History and the capital of Burgundy wine, Beaune is located forty kilometres or so south of Dijon and boasts some exceptional heritage. Surrounded by old ramparts, it is known as the centre for the Burgundy wine trade, as evidenced by the famous auction at the Hospices de Beaune every third Sunday in November.

The old town contains some remarkable monuments and has some beautiful Renaissance mansions for visitors to admire, as well as pretty half-timbered houses and charming inner courtyards. Take the time to stroll around, to see Beaune's architectural treasures at your own pace or using an audioguide.

The first stop along the way: the Hôtel-Dieu, a gem of Burgundian medieval architecture, built in the 15th century at the request of the Duke of Burgundy's Chancellor, Nicolas Rolin, to come to the aid of the poor and sick. A listed Historic Monument, this superb complex with its famous varnished tile roofs has become a museum of medical history. On your visit, you can in particular admire the magnificent ceremonial courtyard (cour d'honneur), the impressive Hall for the Poor (Salle des Pôvres), the Gothic chapel, the kitchen and the apothecary, as well as a masterpiece of Flemish painting dating from the 15th century: the polyptych of the Last Judgment, attributed to the artist Rogier van der Weyden. The world's biggest wine auction takes place here in November, with part of the proceeds going towards the upkeep of the Hôtel-Dieu.

Not far from there, on Rue Paradis, is the mansion of the Dukes of Burgundy, which you can visit. A listed Historic Monument, this old ducal palace from the 14th century now houses the Museum of Burgundy Wine, where the history of the vineyard and winemaking is told through ethnographic and artistic collections, tapestries and everyday objects used by winegrowers.

All around the Beaune region, there are cellar tours, tastings and organised excursions in the vineyard so you can learn about Burgundy's winegrowing heritage.

Another unmissable monument is the Cluniac-inspired Collegiate Church of Our Lady. This superb 13th-century edifice, one of the last big Romanesque churches in Burgundy, possesses a Gothic portal and chevet, as well as a Renaissance bell tower. Inside is a collection of five tapestries from the 15th century illustrating the life of the Virgin, a Renaissance chapel and a black Virgin from the 12th century.

Beaune has a busy and lively cultural life all year. One of the most prestigious Baroque music festivals in Europe takes place there in July.

Additional information Beaune

A 40 km south of Dijon , this small town, ringed like a drum by its ramparts and bastions, and is still in the early 21th century the center of the Burgundy wine trade. In its venerable wineries ripen nicely nectars called "still wine".

Parliamentary capital in the fifteenth century in the duchy of Burgundy, which prefigured Europe, this city of art and history shows all the spiritual, cultural economic and soon a province in the heart of Europe.

On the ramparts, a Hotel Dieu never ceases to redeem the "sins" of a great servant of the "state Bourguignon": Nicolas Rolin. This famous site visited by over 400,000 people each year, boasts justly of a masterpiece of Flemish painting: the altarpiece of the Last Judgment attributed to the painter Rogier van der Weyden.

In a city where you can still wander, we discover a ducal palace converted into a museum of wine and located between Paradise Street and the Rue d'Enfer - it does not just happen! -. Emerging from the same street, coincidence?, The gaze is on the collegiate basilica of Our Lady, youngest daughter told of the Abbey of Cluny.

And still, to homes in mansions, a whole society scrolls, aristocrats of the sword or dresses, but also merchants and notable artists, Felix Ziem painted Venice ... and Jules Marey invents itself as one of the fathers of cinema.

A vineyard has 580 hectares of red wines from the Pinot Noir. An exceptional domain which 320 hectares in the first vintage (the largest surface first thought of all the coast). Firm, frank, colorful, full of fire and bouquet, soft, these are the wines Beaune. The Duke of Clarence sentenced to death by his brother the king of England exclaimed: "I wish to be drowned in a butt of wine Beaune that my death is effortless and good". What better promotion ...

Gastronomy is an integral part of the life of a Burgundian. Fine dining, full of tradition and innovation.

A good table is carefully balanced: the puffs and cheese appetizers around a Kir to whet the appetite. A marbled ham or Burgundy snails , or eggs in red wine sauce make a delicious entry. Then comes the beef bourguignon , coq au vin, quail at the vineyard, the Burgundian stew, ham with wine lees. All these casseroles agree so well with the wines of the region.

If nearby Dijon is the French capital city of mustard, then Beaune is undoubtedly the French capital city of wine. Situated in the Côte d’Or department of Eastern France, this historic settlement is filled to the brim with wine tasting opportunities, historic museums, and many a timber-framed house. Here’s your complete guide to the best things to do in Beaune !

Beaune, France travel Guide: Best things to do in Beaune, the wine capital of Burgundy (Bourgogne). Here’s where to stay, best attractions, and the best wine locations in Beaune, which is a timber-framed town filled with museums, eateries, and churches

Surrounded by vineyards, filled with cellars and stockists, and even home to its own wine bookshop, there’s much more to this historic city than simply wine, though you must try the vin if you get the chance!

Beaune is the historic wine capital of Burgundy (Bourgogne in French) and is where monks produced the tipple as early as the Middle Ages.

Beaune also happens to be where the Dukes of Burgundy chose to centre much administration for their prosperous territory that stretched from France all the way to the modern day the Netherlands…

Vestiges of the city’s past wealth can be found all around Beaune to this very day in the form of mansion houses, sumptuous sculptures, and timber-framed houses.

Here's why you need to visit the Burgundy capital of wine, Beaune, historic seat of the Dukes of Burgundy. Best Beaune attractions and things to do in eastern France

Somewhere on the train line between the gastronomic settlement of Lyon and the mustard town of Dijon to the North, the postcard-perfect city of Beaune can easily be explored over the course of a day.

All cobbled lanes, œnotourisme  (wine tourism), Romanesque churches, and ancient façades, this city of around 20,000 inhabitants are packed into a historic city centre that’s still surrounded by ruinous ramparts to this day.

And of course, should you wish to stay longer, then short excursions into the French countryside to wander among the vines or to explore nearby cities such as Mâcon, Chalon-Sur-Saône, and Dijon are always a possibility.

The history of the city dates back to at least Roman times, when a Roman fort was built on the place where the city now stands. By the 13th-century, Beaune was a prosperous wine region, with a thriving city in its very heart.

The end of the Dukes of Burgundy was signalled by the death of the last such Duke, Charles the Bold towards the end of the 15th Century when France took the town.

After a slump in prosperity following the flight of the Huguenots, Beaune soon rose to prominence once more with the wine trade, which still fuels the economy of the region now.

20+ Best things to do in Beaune

The Hôtel Dieu with its glazed tiles is emblematic of the city and was constructed in 1442 when it was founded by Nicolas Rolin, a Duke of Burgundy. This charitable set of almshouses was constructed following the Plague when Beaune lost a staggering three-quarters of its population.

600 years ago, Beaune was also caught up in the centre of the Hundred Years’ War and the Hôtel Dieu was built in just 8 years around this time. It’s a testament to the precise running of the hospital that it remained in operation for well over five centuries and only closed in 1982.

Today, the Hospices de Beaune now functions as a museum. For a fee, visitors can head inside to the hospital turned museum and learn more about the history of Beaune. One of the most striking rooms is the first room you enter, which is the largest and where the poorest were treated.

Unfortunately, this was more care for the soul and so most people came to the hospital to die. The smaller ward was for wealthier patients. As they had better care, they were also more likely to survive their time at the hospital.

The annual charity auction that now occurs in the Hôtel Dieu each year is globally-famous and is generally considered to be among one of the finest wine auctions in the world.

Held in the third week of November on an annual basis, the Vente aux Enchères takes place over three days, with proceeds going towards research and medical facilities.

What is perhaps unique about Beaune in the region is that around half of the city’s ancient ramparts are still standing (and can therefore still be explored) to this day.

Around half can still be spied and of particular note are the Château de Beaune (a 15th-century watchtower), Bastion Saint-Anne (dating back to the 17th-century), and Tour des Billes (a late 14th-century watchtower).

One of the best examples of a Romanesque cathedral in France can be found close to the old hospital and not far from the Maison des Colombiers in the heart of town.

Imposing and constructed in the 12th-century, Notre Dame of Beaune is one of the last remaining Romance ecclesiastical buildings in Bourgogne. Head inside, and you’ll soon discover plenty of Gothic additions as well as some stunning stained glass windows.

Though Dijon is undoubtedly world-famous for its spicy sauce, alternatively, Beaune also offers its own variety of mustard. For around €10, it’s possible to visit the Fallot factory, where it’s possible to learn about the mustard mill and its history. From ancient tools to modern methods, you’ll learn things about mustard you hadn’t even thought to ask!

One of the very best things to do in Beaune is to head into one of the many  caves dotted around the city and enjoy a wine tasting experience. These tastings typically take place in a 17th or 18th-century wine cellars and discuss the history of wine growing in the region from a vintner or local expert.

I personally attended the one at Le Cellier de la Cabiote and really enjoyed the underground visit of the Cistercian wine cellars!

Our group was only three people large and included tastings of a Grand Cru as well as a Creme de Cassis (another regional speciality) . Tastings throughout the city vary in price from free to upwards of €20 so shop around before you go!

If you’re the kind of person who prefers to book tastings in advance, you can book a wine tasting at Maison Champy like this one.

Much like the wine museum of Bordeaux , Beaune also has its own wine museum! If you’re looking to learn even more about the history of wine in Beaune and beyond, then you simply must head to the former mansion house of the Dukes of Burgundy. Now transformed into a museum, the timber-framed Hotel des Ducs can be found on Rue d’Enfer and is open on a daily basis.

For true wine lovers, a visit to the dedicate wine bookshop is an absolute must! Situated opposite the Hôtel Dieu, this store not only features wine textbooks, vin history books, and all tomes and novels in between, but it also functions as a shop where you can purchase all kinds of wine-related paraphernalia.

From corkscrews to posters to wine glasses to the I’m-not-sure-what-this-wine-related-thing-is-even-for, Athenaeum truly does sell it all! For more detailed information (and photos) of this niche Beaune bookshop, check out my Athenaeum bookshop guide .

Housed at the back of the tourism office, the permanent exhibition of the Maison des Climats is free to visit and provides greater insight into the appellation of Burgundian wine, as well as historical information, and the history of vintners in the region. For an introduction to vin from Bourgogne , there is no better place to starts.

The Hôtel-Dieu is not the only building in Beaune where you’ll see the glazed tiles that are so synonymous with the city. Instead, one of the more unusual structures in the city is La Maison du Colombier  (the dove house).

Set across a pretty square from the Romanesque cathedral, the truly unique feature of this building is its corner turret facing the road. Constructed during the 16th-century, the building was once called home by a wine merchant. For a greater insight into Bourgogne style, check out my Burgundy architecture guide .

For those who are wishing to get to know the foodie scene in Beaune on a more local level, the weekly Saturday market is second to none. Come Saturday morning, the market is alive with the cries of vendors touting local produce: from fresh vegetables to regional cheeses, the gourmet scene is not to be missed!

After all, one of the best ways to get to know France like a local is by delving deep into the culinary scene. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, then you can even pick up a Burgundy speciality: escargots (snails). These can be purchased at the charcuterie either pre-stuffed with garlic and butter or you can do it yourself.

For quite literally a look at Beaune in another light, be sure to wander around the city come nightfall during the summer months. For, between roughly June and September, the city’s main monuments are lit up by various coloured bright lights. To get a full map of the route, a free guide is available in Beaune’s tourist office.

At a first glance, Hôtel de Saulx looks like there’s little to see. However, step under the building and through into the courtyard and the timber-framed mansion soon reveals itself to be one of the best hidden gems of Beaune. Typical of the region, the part wooden frame is complete with a tower, and parts of the roof even have glazed Burgundian tiles.

Now the sub-prefecture of Beaune, Hotel de Montille has a long and rich history which is associated with wider architectural styles in France, particularly those of Paris. Constructed in the Classical style, the building likely dates back to the early 18th-century.

Situated beside the cathedral, the ancient building of the chapter was once part of a large monastical complex which comprised of buildings dotted within the ramparts.

All this changed following the French Revolution when the property was confiscated from the church. Today, the building is home to a wine merchant’s, as is the case of many other former ecclesiastical buildings in Beaune.

One of the more famous residents to have emerged from Beaune (aside from the Dukes of Burgundy) is Étienne-Jules Marey who was born in the city during the 19th-century.

A doctor and physiologist, Marey is widely regarded as being key in the development of cinematography, having invented a technique known as ‘techniquechonophotography’. Now, the city’s famous resident has a statue dedicated to him and a street named for his works and legacy.

Once upon a time, residents of Beaune would have relied on various bells to let them know when it was time for work, prayers, and the like. The belfry has existed in the city centre of Beaune for centuries in some form or another.

During the 14th-century, the clock tower was acquired by Philip the Bold (the last Duke of Burgundy) so that he could effectively and quite literally ‘control the time’ of the town.

And thus, the power of time fell from the church’s hands, and into those of nobility. It was also in 1395 that the bell tower was transformed into a clock one!

Porte St Nicolas lies on the fringes of the old city and was constructed in the 18th-century to impress visitors arriving in Baune from the North (i.e. from Paris).

Next door, you’ll spy the beautiful Italianate theatre that was constructed at the end of the 19th-century. Designed so as that all the audience can see the stage, today the theatre continues to host performances.

Though (unfortunately) not a real French Château, the closest that Beaune has to a castle can be found along the remparts (ramparts) . A double bastion on the train station side of the city, this location makes for a great starting point from which to explore the rest of the ancient 2km worth of city walls that still remain.

In what was once the Couvent des Ursulines, the well-appointed town hall can be found close to both the open-air theatre and covered theatres of the city. Built at the end of the 17th-century, this building would once have housed the Ursulines are nuns and their patients (this order of nuns is devoted to caring for patients).

Set amidst a maze of cobbled lanes and close to one of the best wine tasting spots in the city, the Carmelite Convent was built at the turn of the 17th-century.

Though largely destroyed over the centuries, part of the cloisters still survives to this day. During 1658, the cloisters even hosted Anne of Austria and her Son Louis XIV (i.e. the boy who would go on to become the Sun King of Versailles ) during a royal visit.

If you’re looking for a secret spot in Beaune that even many locals don’t know about, then this is it. In what were once the city’s bathhouses, there’s now an open-air theatre space surrounded by green parkland. Best viewed from Rempart de la Comédie, this 19th-century building has been used for open-air performances since the 20th-century.

For those who are wishing to get up close and personal to the vines and very soil that produces the grape harvest, there is perhaps a no better way than by heading off on a day trip from the city .

And while you could arrange your own transport (car) and make your own bookings, if you’re looking for a stress-free and simple solution, then you might consider booking a wine tour.

For example, this half-day tour from Beaune is well-reviewed and lasts for five hours. En route, you’ll spy ancient villages, historic vines, and learn all about the Grand Cru wine route, as well as get the opportunity to sample a handful of Burgundy wines at the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits wineries. For a longer stint, this full-day trip from Beaune includes 10 wine tastings and lasts for around 8 hours.

As the city is so compact, then you probably won’t need a car! Unlike other French cities like Lyon or Marseille, Beaune is fairly flat, though there are plenty of cobblestones and so you’ll want to wear comfortable footwear.

The train station is served by regular trains from Paris, Lyon, and Dijon, and can be found around a ten-minute stroll from the city centre. Please note, however, that if you’re looking for somewhere that’s a little ‘off the beaten tourist track,’ then Beaune is not it.

Though still beautiful, this city well and truly is the official/ unofficial wine capital of Burgundy and so tourists flock to the place in abundance. If you’re looking for a city in Burgundy that’s more of a hidden gem, then I recommend Chalon-Sur-Saône or Auxerre.

And while the city is definitely filled with English speakers (this is especially true of restaurants, cafés, and hotels), be prepared to practice your French. Though many of the cellar tours can be taken in English, you’ll want to know some French phrases not only to be polite, but also so you can better enjoy tours and tastings.

For when in doubt, I highly recommend bringing along a simple French phrasebook like this one . If you’re travelling to France internationally, then you’ll want to bring along a universal travel adapter like this one to keep all your electronics (and especially your camera) charged on the go!

Like many other smaller French towns, communes, and cities, be prepared for the ‘lunchtime closures’. Typically between 12 and 2 in the afternoon, most businesses will close up shop for lunch, with the exception of the city’s many bars and brasseries. Even the tourist office is typically closed during this time (6 Boulevard Perpreuil).

Finally, if you’re looking to learn a little more about wine prior to your visit, then I recommend purchasing a book like this one . Though it’s not absolutely necessary to know anything about vin before visiting Bourgogne, a little knowledge will certainly help you understand your preferences when selecting where you should go wine tasting and what you should purchase!

FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions About Beaune)

Hands down, Beaune is most famous for its links to the wine trade in France and beyond. Situated in the very heart of Burgundy (or Bourgogne as it is so-called in French) , the French settlement is filled with wine merchants and ‘caves’ (underground cellars) where visitors can sample and purchase Burgundy wine. Beaune is also pretty famous for its Hospices de Beaune, a medieval hospital turned museum.

Though I wouldn’t recommend visiting as a day trip from Paris due to the distance of 274 km between the two French cities, the easiest way to reach Beaune from Paris is by taking the train. The entire trip takes just over two hours and requires a train from Paris to Dijon, followed by a transfer from Dijon to Beaune.

In the summer, you can’t go wrong by pairing a cute midi dress with classic white tennis shoes for a laid-back smart casual look that’s just as chic for walking around a city’s cobbled lanes as it is for wandering coastal paths. I love this dress and have it in several colour ways. In terms of tennis shoes, this is my go-to shoe.

When it comes to winter in Europe, most places (with the exception of a few islands) can get pretty cold and so warm layers is a must. I find that cute ankle boots like these ones are the perfect mix of practical meets cute.

Shoulder seasons (spring and summer) in Europe tend to come with a mix of rainy and sunny days and so, again, layers are a must. Trench coats and sneakers are the best uniform to explore the continent in.

Finally, a cross-body bag like these ones is a must. I personally use a crossbody bag  by this brand  and love its shape, size, and versatility. As well as being convenient and compact, it’s one of the safest ways to transport your valuables, all the while looking chic. I also recommend bringing along a travel adapter  like this one  so you can charge all of your electronics during your stay!

I had no idea there was so much to do in the area if you aren't a wine drinker! I'll have to check it out the next time I'm in France. It looks so charming!

I haven’t yet visited Beaune, but I’ve tried plenty of wines from the region! Trips throughout France are never complete without trying the wines of each region—it looks like you did a great job with your research at Beaune!

I had a vague recollection of visiting Beaune as a child ... then I saw your photo of the Hospice and it all came flooding back! Thank you for reminding me how much this town is worth revisiting, I think it would make a great stopping point on our next French road trip.

Beaune travel guide for wine lovers: Where to visit

This article was originally published on Decanter.com in November 2014, written by Anthony Hanson MW, and has been updated with extra recommendations in August 2019.

Beaune travel guide: Five ideas for wine and food lovers

  • Hire a bike and enjoy a gentle ride through the vines from Beaune to Pommard
  • See inside the fabled Hospices de Beaune
  • Book to see the historic underground cellars and taste wines at  Oenothèque Joseph Drouhin
  • Buy cheese from Fromagerie Alain Hess
  • Time your visit to coincide with the enormous Beaune market on Saturday morning

Cycling through the Beaune vineyards

beaune cycle vineyards

The bike track meandering through vineyards between Beaune and Pommard.

You can walk out to the vineyards from Beaune centre in around 20 minutes, or get a sneak peek via the city’s tourist ‘train’; think more open-top bus ride than Napa wine train .

But hiring a bike is a great way to see more of the vines if you have some extra time.

There is a designated cycle track right through the vineyards and it is predominantly flat for the 20-or-so minutes it takes to reach Pommard.

There is then a mild climb up to Volnay, and you can even carry on all the way down the Côte de Beaune, through Meursault, and eventually ending around Santenay if you’re feeling the need to work off last night’s dinner.

Bike hire starts from €20 per person at ‘ Bourgogne Vélo Evasion ‘ cycle hire station, which is on the route out to the vineyards.

Remember that you will likely need to call or book ahead if you want to stop at specific wineries for tastings along the way.

Otherwise, the route is perfect for a picnic.

Visiting Hospices de Beaune

With it ornate roof tiles and imposing structure, it’s hard to miss the Hospices de Beaune , originally opened as a ‘palace for the poor’ in the 15th century. It hosts one of the world’s most famous wine auctions every November, as many readers will know.

The Musée de l’Hotel Dieu is open from 9am until 18h30, and stays open until 19h30 for anyone already inside after this point.

Beaune restaurants, bars and shops

Pâtisserie fabien berteau.

Fabien Berteau was named France’s best pastry chef by the respected Gault Millau restaurant guide in 2015 and he has since opened up in Beaune, just a stone’s throw from the Hospices de Beaune.

Whether you want a morning croissant, macaron or afternoon sweet treat, this ‘salon de thé’ is well worth the trip. Not that you’ll have to look far to find artisan bakeries in Beaune.  CM.

La Maison du Colombier

Roland Chanliaud brought some of his favourite bottles with him when moving to this wine bar from Le Jardin des Remparts .

There is speedily served food – charcuterie, cheeses and tapas – with many wines by the glass. There are also rooms for those looking to stay the night.

Recommended by: Anthony Hanson MW

Fromagerie Alain Hess

A must-visit on Place Carnot for a wide range of cheeses and local items, including the renowned Epoisses from the Côte d’Or.

Also be sure to buy some of France’s best chocolate, from Chocolatier Bonnat. All chocoholics like me will want to stock up here.  AH.

Bissoh – Sushi

A classic venue in Beaune for those seeking Japanese delicacies, together with a fine wine list. Michelin inspectors recently described Japanese chef Mikihiko Sawahata as a ‘master’ of the kitchen. Call +33(0)380240102 to book.  AH [updated].

Boucherie Vossot

For a picnic overlooking the vines, this is Beaune’s best butcher. You can get local parsley ham, pâtés and terrines, or slices of rosette saucisson – there are more than 60 home-made items. Tel: +33(0)380222974.  AH.

Le Bistrot du Bord de l’Eau, Hostellerie Levernois

Just a 10-minute drive from Beaune, this a charming, stream-side spot in summer, or snuggle up to an open fire in winter. Fine food with Relais & Château service, at bistro prices.  AH.

Le Comptoir des Tontons

Seasonal ingredients are locally sourced from small farms and market gardeners, then cooked with care by Pépita. The brave can experiment with ‘natural’ wines alongside many Burgundian classics.  AH.

La Vinothèque wine shop

You won’t be short of options for buying wine, naturally, but La Vinothèque near l’Hôtel Dieu has a good selection from the local area and further afield in the Côte d’Or, plus very knowledgeable staff who will happily let you explore the downstairs ‘cellar’ section of the shop on request.  CM.

Restaurant La Ciboulette

Always a warm welcome here from the patronne, Madame Mâle, with dependable bourgeois cooking, interesting bottles on the list and friendly pricing. Tel:+33(0)380247072.  AH.

La Dilettante

A wine bar with food, whose owner, Lolo, has a keen nose for tasty, seasonal vegetables and fruit (80% locally grown). There is great Iberico ham, with both unusual and classic wines – some are offered blind to clients, if they wish. There are also two Burgundy-brewed beers, and ciders. An easy walk just off the ring-road, Route de Pommard. Tel:+33(0)380214859.  AH.

Le Jardin des Remparts

Chef Christophe Boquillon has been in charge here since January 2013, and this restaurant is worth a visit. There are locally sourced ingredients, with wines from little-known growers, as well as top names. There is also an outdoor terrace.  AH.

Visiting Beaune market

Last but not least, the market that takes over several streets of central Beaune on Saturday mornings is something to behold, although there is a smaller one on Wednesdays.

Fantastic piles of vegetables, fruit and butter are impossible to resist, while you’ll also be able to feast on rotisserie chicken and a endless amounts of cheese and charcuterie.  AH. CM.

Anthony Hanson MW’s Beaune

I was a 19-year-old student at Grenoble University when I first heard about the  Hospices de Beaune  wine sale, the oldest charity auction in the world.

Aiming to work in the wine trade, I realised I had to get there, so I hitchhiked, including standing on the tipper of a bulldozer for part of the way round Lyon, as no other vehicle would stop for me.

Once there and tasting, a cellar worker at the Hospices took pity on me when he heard I had not booked a bed. ‘Come and stay with us,’ he said. ‘You won’t find a hotel room now.’

His wife invited me to their family lunch (eight courses) before the Sunday sale. It was my first experience of extraordinary Burgundian generosity and friendliness – never forgotten.

Beaune’s ramparts and moats still surround the little town. They have survived because they have been used to store barrels and bottles, so the great stones were never carted away for re-use.

One of my favourite walks in Beaune is along the top of the ramparts, whose walls and towers are largely from the 12th to 14th century.

You can climb the gentle slopes onto them at a dozen points around the town. Great views open up of Beaune’s old roofs, of the coloured tiles of the flamboyant Gothic Hôtel-Dieu, and of premier cru Beaune hillside vineyards, which come right up to the town’s edge.

It is best to explore Beaune in stout shoes, as many of its streets are still cobbled.

There is plentiful parking, often in the dried-out moats beside the walls. From the Porte St-Nicolas, walk down the elegant Rue de Lorraine, the best street for old buildings. Inspect the Renaissance door of No 18, with its dedication to the Muses – when I got a job in Beaune, this is where I lived.

Then turn left into Rue Rousseau-Deslandes – you will find Romanesque façades on some of these old houses. Look around the Notre Dame Collegiate Church, leading to the Palace of the Dukes of  Burgundy , where the King later stayed (now the Burgundy wine Museum).

An essential visit is to the Hospices de Beaune, dating from 1443. Sober from the outside, within its courtyard slender columns support half-timbered galleries and steep roofs with dormer windows, multicoloured tiles and many weather vanes and pinnacles. In the Hospice museum itself is the superb Flemish Last Judgement by Rogier Van der Weyden, its colours still astonishingly bright.

Beaune has the world’s best wine bookshop, the Athenaeum, with a wide wine selection. And don’t miss the Hospices de Beaune’s own shop, as you exit its museum.

Anthony Hanson MW was previously senior wine consultant at Christie’s London, with key responsibilities for the annual Hospices de Beaune auction, which Christie’s has run since 2005.

15 Best Things to Do in Beaune (France)

In the capital of Burgundy’s region you better believe you can immerse yourself in wine.

Well, not literally: But all around this pretty country town are names that ring out in the wine world, like Santenay and Pommard, so you can go off and taste grands crus and tour illustrious vineyards for days on end.

In Burgundy the food is also superb so you’re going to have a pretty indulgent holiday, and can work it off with easy walks or bike rides in the celebrated Côte by the vines.

Lets exlore the best things to do in Beaune :

1. Old Beaune

Porte Saint-Nicolas

Beaune’s ramparts circle the town for 2.5 kilometres, with towers and bastions best seen at the Château de Beaune . While it isn’t possible to see every stone of the walls, because they are often adapted to private homes and shops, you can pass an agreeable hour or two tracking their route.

The last remaining gate is Porte Saint-Nicolas at the old northern entrance of the town.

The most refined bit is on Rue de Rempart des Lions, where a 17th-century balustrade and stairway lead up to a beautiful arboretum with an osage orange tree and Chinese ginkgo biloba.

2. Hôtel-Dieu

Hôtel-Dieu

A late-medieval masterpiece, the Hôtel-Dieu is an almshouse and hospice dating to 1443 and ordered by the Duke of Burgundy Nicolas Rolin.

It is configured around a courtyard with a porch on the lower floor with columns supporting a beautiful gallery that runs around the first floor.

The roof, with gabled dormers, is a fine example of the glazed tile patterns typical in the Burgundy region.

And that’s just the exterior! Inside you should waste no time in seeing the Beaune Altarpiece by Rogier van der Weyden, a polyptych of 15 paintings commissioned for the almshouse and completed in 1450. On the third Sunday in November the charity wine auction takes place here and is attended by all of the region’s most important vintners, while the accompanying festival offers a wonderful weekend of tasting.

3. Wine Region

Pommard

Beaune is the capital of the Burgundy wine region, and aficionados’ eyes will light up when you reel off the list of vineyards local to the town: Meursauly, Pommard, Santenay, La Romanée-Conti, Corton-Charlemagne, it just goes on and on.

You’ll be right at the centre of a long tranche of grand cru-producing vineyards from Santenay up to Dijon, where almost every hillside is imbued with special meaning for wine-lovers.

So have no choice but to explore as many of the prestigious appellations as you can, step into caves and wineries, taste the best wine in the world, meet the people who make it and luxuriate in the green countryside and singular atmosphere of this wine heaven.

4. Local Wine Experiences

Marché aux Vins

And you won’t even need to leave Beaune to start your journey.

Directly in front of the Hôtel-Dieu there’s the Marché aux Vins, which is a fabulous introduction to Burgundy, providing tasting sessions for a general cross-section of the region’s wines , among them several grands crus – if you’re happy to pay a little extra.

Also in Beaune, just a couple of streets from the town hall is the cave of the wine merchant and producer Patriarche Pere et Fils.

You’ll be led down into the largest cellar in Burgundy, with five-kilometres of man-made tunnels, and will be able to taste 13 different wines with a souvenir metallic cup that you can take home with you at the end.

And if there’s a wine that takes your fancy just signal and you can purchase it at the end.

5. Château de Savigny

Château de Savigny

When you plan a visit to this château you might prepare yourself for parterres, tapestries, paintings and such like.

Instead the Château de Savigny has treasures of a different kind, with a fleet of 80 fighter jets in the grounds (MiGs and Dassaults), as well as 300 vintage motorcycles and 35 Abarth sports cars.

Go upstairs for literally thousands of model aircraft, bikes and cars in cabinets.

And then just to change tack completely you’ve also got viticulture exhibitions, with straddle tractors, wine presses and antique manual tools.

That’s because Château de Savigny is part of the Côte de Beaune wine-growing region and sells bottles on site.

6. Dalineum

Dalineum

The editor and art collector Jean Amiot has spent a quarter of a century acquiring more than 1,000 works by the 20th-century surrealist Salvador Dalí.

In 2011 he set them up in a palatial 18th-century mansion next to the clock tower on Place Monge for everyone to see.

About 150 works from this large collection can be shown at a time, and these can be drawings, prints, watercolours, gouaches, furniture or photographs.

One of the most  unique displays is the complete table service (cutlery, glasses crockery), designed by the artist, and there’s also a reproduction of the iconic Mae West Lips Sofa.

7. Château de la Rochepot

Château de la Rochepot

If you liked the tiles on the roof of the Hôtel-Dieu you’ll love Château de la Rochepot where the patterns are even more elaborate.

The castle feels like a movie set, in the best possible way: Originally built in the 13th century it was the seat of the Lords Pot, who were closely tied to the Dukes of Burgundy.

But as with many castles in the region it suffered in the 18th and 19th centuries before being reconstructed using archived plans and archaeological knowhow to become a rose-tinted and romantic ode to the middle ages.

Compelling fragments of the past endure, like the 70-metre-deep well hewn from the bedrock.

8. Véloroute

Véloroute

Hire a bike and ride the route from Beaune to Santenay and pedal over rolling hills on trails used by grape pickers for hundreds of years.

There’s something satisfying about the geometry of the vines, regimented in perfect rows on the hillsides.

But there’s also lots of detours as you ride, from romanesque chapels to villages like Volnay that are both picturesque and bursting with wine pedigree.

The journey needn’t stop in Santenay as the 18th-century Canal du Centre passes through and has more than 100 kilometres of farmland and forest to inspire you from its towpaths.

  • 9.  Basilique Notre-Dame

Basilique Notre-Dame

Burgundy is revered for its romanesque wonders, and Beaune has one at the Basilique Notre-Dame.

Most of this church is from the 12th century, except for the chevet and western portal.

From the church’s earliest days is a statue of the Virgin Mary with Jesus in her lap from the 1100s in the choir.

Even more breathtaking are the 15th-century tapestries illustrating the life of Mary and the birth of Jesus behind the choir stalls.

For yet more wonderful art, the chapel of Saint-Léger has murals from 1530.

10. Parc de la Bouzaize

Parc de la Bouzaize

A short walk from the ramparts and backing onto a vineyard is a restful little park for a quiet stroll or picnic.

Beaune isn’t really a hotspot for family holidays, but if you do have little guys with you then you could bring them to the petting zoo to make friends with the alpacas, goats and a pig.

The park’s pond is no ordinary water feature, but in fact the source of the Bouzaize River which wends off for 20 kilometres before meeting the Dheune, which ends up in the famous Saône.

11. Burgundy Cuisine

Maison Lameloise

There are 10 Michelin-starred restaurants in the Beaune area, the cream of which is the three-starred Maison Lameloise in Chagny, often voted as one of the best in France, and, in turn, the world.

You needn’t push the boat out that far to get to know Burgundy’s renowned gastronomy.

Beef Bourguignon, the braised beef and red wine stew, is a speciality at most restaurants, as is coq au vin, another dish that everybody considers quintessentially French.

For something sweet Pain d’Epices is gingerbread spiced with clove, cinnamon, aniseed and cinnamon.

And let’s not forget Dijon-style mustard, produced locally at the Fallot “moutarderie”.

12. Cirque du Bout du Monde

Cirque du Bout du Monde

The name,”Cirque at the End of the World” sounds like a bit of an overstatement until you come to this spectacular steephead valley 20 kilometres west of Beaune.

After parking up you take a trail ensconced in hardwood forest until all at once an arena of limestone cliffs blocks your path.

These top out at more than 500 metres and provide a habitat for peregrine falcons and white-bellied swifts.

What’s cool is that it’s a totally different scene according to the season: In winter there’s a gossamer waterfall against the rocks and a river in the valley.

In the warmer seasons these will have dried up but you can follow the riverbed to a set of caves that you can’t when the river’s here.

13. Specialty Shops

Vedrenne shop

In a town that has built its reputation on Epicureanism, wine caves are accompanied by purveyors of other high-quality food and drink.

On Place Carnot is the Alain Hess fromagerie, which stores more than 200 varieties of cheese in its cellars, such as well-known ones like l’Epoisses,  Chaorce and Soumantrain.

But the shop also makes its own type, Le Délice de Pommard, made with triple cream and local crushed mustard seeds.

And after wine, the blackcurrant liqueur Crème de Cassis is the other pride of Burgundy and can be purchased from the elegant Vedrenne shop on Rue Carnot.

14. Châteauneuf-en-Auxois

Châteauneuf-en-Auxois

One of only a clutch of surviving relics in Burgundy from the 100 Years’ War, Châteauneuf-en-Auxois is a sweet little village above the valley of the Canal de Bourgogne.

The village’s château dominates the landscape from its natural balcony 500 metres up.

On the D18 or from the canal banks you can spot the fairytale towers and their conical roofs from many kilometres away.

In the 15th-century the castle was the property of Phillippe le Bon, who was a right-hand man of the Duke of Burgundy, Phillippe le Bon.

This raised the status of the village, and courtiers and merchants moved here, explaining why the houses on Grand Rue are so grand, with arcades and towers of their own.

Ducal Palace

When the Dukes of Burgundy ruled their lands from Dijon in the middle ages the city was possibly the most powerful in France.

Dijon became a centre for culture and science, and clues to those glory days are almost everywhere you look.

Take the Parcours de la Chouette(Owl’s Trail) and all of the old quarter’s most beautiful and riveting sights are marked with a cheerful owl motif.

The hard part is staying on the trail, as the city’s boutiques, cafes and fascinating museums may blow you off course a few times! Gaze at the Ducal Palace, where those Dukes resided and marvel at the resplendent renaissance mansions on the Rue des Forges.

Top 10 Things to Do in Beaune, France

Burgundian village

A short drive south of the capital city of Burgundy, Dijon, is Beaune – an ancient town encircled by medieval ramparts, famed for its significant production of Burgundian wines. Though smaller in size compared to its capital counterpart, there’s no shortage of sites to see and experiences to be had, thanks to its long history from the pre-Roman era through to the Renaissance, world-class gastronomy, and surrounding countryside blanketed by grapevines. Here are the 10 top things to see and do in Beaune.

Cycle the route des grand crus.

Quiet, low-traffic roads that weave through rolling vineyards (and not just any vineyards, some of the best in the world) are ideal for exploring on two wheels. Temperatures get quite warm during the summer months, so biking the route is best enjoyed in autumn during harvest, or just afterwards when the fields turn a yellow-gold. Sites en route include the châteaux de Corton André, Pommard, and Meursault, all located along the stretch through the Côte de Beaune. With many bike shops in town, it’s easy to rent for the day and push off pedalling from Beaune; talk to the shop owner to map out a ride ahead of time as parts of the region have some significant hills that are best suited for avid riders.

Volnay is one of the many famed vineyards in the Burgundian countryside

Feast on classic Burgundian fare

Taste the world’s best wine with local producers.

As Burgundy is synonymous with wine, there’s no better place to sip and learn about the delicate Pinot Noirs and crisp Chablis it harvests than from the source. A number of well-known producers can be found right in the town of Beaune, such as Joseph Drouhin, Louis Jadot, and Bouchard Père et fils . To dive even deeper, head into the countryside for a tasting (or two) at a domaine alongside the vines. Make sure to call and book appointments ahead of time, particularly during high or harvest season. The local tourism board or hotel concierge would be happy to assist with this.

Sip on the best Pinot Noir in Burgundy

Take a cooking class from with locals

Those who’ve always waned to unleash their inner Julia Child can do so in Beaune and partake in a cooking class with a local master. As mentioned earlier, Burgundy is the home of some of the most classic, and complicated, French dishes. Conquer them in the company of trained professionals, such as the ladies of The Cook’s Atelier : a mother-daughter pair from the United States who now call Beaune home, living out the expat dream.

Saturday market in Place de La Halle and Place Carnot

Not one, but two markets operate on Saturdays in Beaune. The market in Place de la Halle, located in the town centre beside the famous Hospices, has over 100 vendors supplying the townspeople and visitors alike with fresh produce, meats, cheeses, and pretty well any culinary staple imaginable. A short walk away in Place Carnot is the antique market* filled with old books, glassware, vases, clothing and more.

( *only from March to November )

Stroll along the ramparts

A stroll along the ancient ramparts that surround the city centre is not only incredibly romantic, but offers a different perspective of Beaune. Entrances to ascend into the ramparts can be accessed from the ring road by venturing down any of the roads leading to the town centre and are marked by the symbol of Amis des Remparts de Beaune . There are a number of important sites to see along the ramparts including the Château de Beaune, once a 15th-century castle turned headquarters of Bouchard Père et fils since 1872, the Théâtre de Verdure, a former theatre and now public garden, the Porte de Nicolas, one of the last remaining gates offering access past the walls to the town centre, and the statue garden of the Square des Lions.

A stroll along the ramparts of Beaune offers a different perspective of the town

1. Dalineum

Salvador Dali is perhaps not the first person one would associate with small-town Burgundy. However Jean Amiot, an art editor who collected more than 1000 Dali pieces, deemed it the perfect spot to open up a museum dedicated to the Catalan artist. The Dalineum offers a modern twist compared to the the ancient wonders of Beaune, offering a small permanent collection of surrealist paintings, sculptures, furniture, photographs – all 100% Dali’s work.

2. Hospices de Beaune

Hospice de Beaune

Founded in 1443 by Nicolas Rolin, chancellor to Philip III Duke of Burgundy, the Hospices de Beaune, or Hôtel-Dieu, once served as a charitable refuge for the poor. Today it serves as a museum and architectural marvel, its glazed tile roof perhaps the most captivating aspect of the building. It still continues in charitable endeavours, however, such as its annual wine auction. Each year over the course of three days, wine from 60 hectares of donated land of the highest designations ( Grand Cru and Premier Cru) is auctioned off, serving not only as a benchmark for the wine market but resulting in large sums of money, which is donated to one or more charities.

3. Park Bouzaise

What better way to enjoy a market haul than by having a picnic in one of Beaune’s parks? A favourite among locals is the English-style Parc de la Bouzaize . Looking like a scene out of a painting, Parc de la Bouzaize contains five hectares of green space and a small lake sourced from the Bouzaize river with green canoes (available for rent) bobbing on top . There’s also a small animal farm, making it a perfect place to entertain kids. The park is equipped with free bathrooms and a café so guests can enjoy the whole day here relaxing in the sun.

4. Fallot Mustard Mill

Mustard lovers know that nearby Dijon is the eponymous city of the famously delicious and spicy Dijon Mustard . However Beaune is the home of one of the condiment’s top producers, Edouard Fallot. The Fallot Mustard Mill is the last independent, family-run mustard mill in all of Burgundy. The visit begins with a historical overview about mustard’s roots in the the region, followed by a sensorial experience that takes visitors through the production process. At the end of the visit, guests get to sample the final result, available in a number of varieties and flavours.

Burgundy Food and Wine Cultural Heritage

Les célèbres toits colorés des Hospices de Beaune, en Bourgogne.

Reading time: 0 min Published on 5 April 2024, updated on 16 April 2024

Every year for nearly 155 years, wine professionals and enthusiasts have gathered at one of the most important events in the Burgundy wine world: the Hospices de Beaune wine auction. Here are 6 things to know about this little jewel in the middle of the vineyards.

The Hospices de Beaune, over five centuries of history

It is in a former hospital that the auctions of the greatest vintages of the Côtes de Beaune AOC have been held for nearly 155 years. This building is steeped in history, having been built in 1443. Created by the Duke of Burgundy's chancellor, Nicolas Rollin, this establishment was intended to house the most destitute. The originality of this place lies in the fact that it had a vineyard at its opening.

A prestigious vineyard

The wines sold at the auction on the third Sunday in November come from the prestigious Hospices de Beaune wine estate, which has been built up since the 15th century through donations. Today, the estate covers some 60 hectares and consists mainly of Premiers and Grands Crus, located around Beaune but also in the Côte de Nuits and the Maconnais.

Raising money for a good cause

The funds raised will be donated to charity. The aim is to contribute to the improvement of care facilities and to modernise the infrastructure. The profits from the auction also help to preserve historical monuments, such as the Hôtel-Dieu de Beaune. Since 1945, the Hospices have supported charities each year by selling a barrel of wine called the "pièce des Présidents".

12.3 million in revenue in 2019

The 159th Hospices de Beaune auction was held in November 2019. It totalled 12.3 million in revenue. This sum was slightly lower than in 2018, which can be explained by a drop in the volumes put up for sale. The "pièce des Présidents", a Corton Grand cru les Bressandes, was sold for 260 000 euros. The money was raised for two associations: the Brain and Spinal Cord Institute and the association Autour de Williams, which supports research into Williams syndrome, a genetic disease.

Record editions

In 2018, an all-time sales record was set with €14.2 million raised. In 2017, the Hospices de Beaune had already brought in over 13.5 million euros. And in 2019, the average price per coin was set at a record 21,823 euros. In 2010, the 500-litre President's coin sold for the highest price of €400,000. In 2012, the 350-litre President's piece was sold for €270,000.

The sisters, long pillars of the Hospices de Beaune

The sisters ran the Hospices de Beaune for almost two decades. During the war, they played a crucial role in the organisation of this place. They were nurses, surgeons but also cooks and apothecaries.
