PHILIPPINES

Get a taste of the Philippines — the “melting pot of Asia ” — on a Holland America Line cruise . Its capital, Manilla, is a modern metropolis that encompasses the colonial walled city of Intramuros and Fort Santiago ruins; pay homage at the American Memorial Cemetery, aka Asia ’s Arlington. Manilla is located on the Philippines’ largest island, Luzon, also home to the world’s smallest volcano. Take a ferry to the island-fortress of Corregidor to view WWII ruins and the massive Malinta Tunnel.

A stoned wall entrance to the Intramuros from the Spanish conquest in Manila, Philippines

The walled city of Intramuros will take you back in time to the Spanish conquest of Manila in the late 16th century. See the Fort Santiago Citadel itself and the treasures within, like the Spanish Colonial San Agustin Church and Bahay Tsinoy Museum, which is dedicated to the Philippines' Chinese immigrant community.

Modern Manila

Manila isn't just about the past. The vibrant Makati district is pulsating and futuristic. Its tree-lined boulevards are home to modern architectural landmarks like the Ayala Museum and contemporary shopping malls, like Glorietta and the Greenbelt, which are marvels of architecture (and air conditioning) in their own right.

Traditional food in the Philippines with noodles, vegetables, and lime served on the side

Local Cuisine

Whether you opt for outdoor stalls around Intramuros or upscale Makati restaurants such as Sentro 1771 in Makati, make traditional Filipino cuisine your priority. Manila cruises offer you the opportunity to try pancit bihon guisado , fried noodles with soy sauce, citrus and veggies. Tuck into sisig , a crispy pork casserole spiced with chilies and flavored with calamansi, a local citrus fruit.

A bunch of colorful handmade purse made out of Manila hemp sold on the streets in the Philippines

If there's one thing Manila's got plenty of, it's shopping. From the shopping malls, to souvenir stalls both inside and outside the walls of Intramuros, you'll be spoiled for choice. Buy "Jeepney" keychains that depict the rural Filipino vehicle for a high kitsch factor, or choose colorful Banig crafts made from traditional Manila hemp grasses for a more rural, traditional souvenir.

A Filipino city of incredible contrasts, variety and rich history, some of the earliest parts of Manila were getting going in the 16th century long before it would become one of the world’s most densely packed cities. One example of the early days: the neighborhood of Intramuros actually started as the neighborhood fortress… and you can still visit their local landmarks today, like San Augstin Church, Casa Manila and yes, even the old kid on the block, Fort Santiago itself. In Manila, the influences come from all over, with Malay, Chinese, American, Spanish and Arab cultures helping to create an international mix you can experience right on the street… or perhaps best through the arts? If you agree, check out the Rizal Park, home to multiple museums, or Cultural Center of the Philippines for live performances, screenings and more. And we haven’t even mentioned the tropical countryside, or nearby Corregidor Island with its kayaking, birdwatching and extensive World War II memorial history.

Manila, Philippines Port Guide

Manila has a storied past of incredible resilience, and you’ll discover the heart and history of the Philippines during a stop here on a cruise to Southeast Asia . After being nearly destroyed during World War II, Manila has since regained its footing as a city known for its urban cool, dozens of museums, historic sites, and fine dining in many global styles of cuisine. Manila was once called “the pearl of the Orient,” and today the city is slowly revitalizing itself as more visitors flock here each year.

On your Manila cruise, tour Fort Santiago, a historic guard tower that once carefully guarded the city. Art lovers will find plenty of ambitious contemporary art in the city’s sculpture gardens and plentiful museums, like the Metropolitan Museum of Manila or the Pinto Art Museum. When you’re ready for a rest, enjoy a leisurely walk along Rizal Park. There’s plenty to do here during your stop, particularly if cool artisan goods and quality shopping appeal to you.

Please Note: While we don't currently sail to Manila, you can still discover the beauty of the region on one of our Southeast Asia cruises . Browse our luxury cruises to Southeast Asia below.

Top sights & attractions for cruises to manila, fort santiago.

Fort Santiago looms over the Pasig River, watchfully guarding Manila as part of the walled city called the “Intramuros”. Built in the 16th century to mark Spanish occupation of the area, today Fort Santiago is a lasting monument to Old Manila. You can take a walking tour through the fort, admire the life-size sculptures, and enjoy river views from the fort’s bastions.

Take a stroll in Rizal Park, also called Luneta Park or Luneta, which is considered Manila’s Central Park. Admire monuments erected to honor Filipino heroes from the Spanish colonial era to the modern day, or stop in the visitor’s center to discover events and attractions nearby.

Metropolitan Museum of Manila

A guided tour of the Metropolitan Museum of Manila is a must-see for art lovers, where you’ll find impressive pieces by local artists. Watch the waters ebb in Manila Bay from the museum’s waterfront location after marveling at centuries of Filipino art.

Top things to do in manila, tour san augustin church.

As one of Manila’s most enduring monuments, San Augustin Church is a must-see during your Manila cruise. After the devastation of World War II, most of Manila was in shambles, though San Augustin Church remained intact. This relic of 16th-century Spanish colonialism in the city serves as a reminder of the Old Manila that once was.

Visit the National Museum of the Filipino People

You may hear it referred to as the Museum of Anthropology as well, but the core element here is that this museum is a must-see for those who want a full understanding of Filipino history, culture, and artifacts.

Hang out along Manila Bay

After you disembark in the South Harbor, you can explore Manila Bay on foot. Stop in the oldest hotel in the city, the Manila Hotel, to grab a drink and enjoy bayside views.

Top Food and Drink Spots Near the Manila Cruise Port

Buffet-style meals are popular in Manila, where fusions of Malaysian, Spanish, and Chinese cuisine offer an elevated take on all three cultural influences. Dine at the courtyard of Ilustrado for a plate of paella in a historic, old-world ambiance. If you’re willing to make a reservation ahead of time, call Purple Yam in nearby Malate, which offers a delicious five-course fine dining experience. For quality java, visit Coffee Empire to watch the talented baristas make expert brews.

Culture & History of the Manila Cruise Port

Various groups have settled in Manila for thousands of years, and it wasn’t until the 16th century that Spanish settlement came to the area. Manila’s old nickname was “the Pearl of the Orient,” for its incredible growth, arts, and culture during the 16th to the 18th centuries. However, World War II largely destroyed the city during the 1945 Battle of Manila, which was a month-long conflict between the Japanese and American forces. The city has worked tirelessly to recover and grow in the decades since then. Today, Manila is one of the Philippines’ biggest cities, and careful efforts to grow tourism to the city attract thousands of new visitors each year.

Manila Port Facilities & Location

You’ll disembark in the South Harbor, which is primarily a commercial port. The cruise industry is growing in the Philippines, and a new Manila cruise port dedicated to passenger travel is planned to encourage more tourism in the future.

Transportation in Manila

The cargo port where you’ll disembark is within walking distance to some attractions in town. If you want to travel by car, it’s best to take a taxi rather than rent a car yourself. A light-rail train system, known as the LRT, operates throughout the city. When you book a shore excursion, your transportation will come included.

Shopping Near the Manila Cruise Port

On a cruise to Manila, head into town for higher-end shopping. There are some souvenir sellers at the port, but it’s best to take a quick peek and then continue on with your exploration via taxi or on foot. Head into the expansive Mall of Asia to explore its hundreds of shops or just cool down in the A.C.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The Philippine peso (P) is the official currency of Manila and the rest of the Philippines. ATMs are available throughout the city, and credit cards are accepted at major establishments like hotels, fine dining restaurants, and museums. While visiting on a Manila cruise, tipping isn’t generally a requirement, but tipping your taxi driver and tour guide 10% is considered polite.

Home to 12 million, the capital of the Philippines is a dynamic city with a rich colonial history dating to 1565, when the Spanish arrived. Dive into the most popular attractions, including the elegant Malacanang Palace, the National Museum of the Philippines and Rizal Park. The poignant, 150-acre American Cemetery and Memorial holds U.S. and Allied servicemen who made the ultimate sacrifice during World War II. The historic walled city core, Intramuros, is well worth exploring.

Our Award-Winning Cruise Ships in the Philippines

Helpful tips before you go.

We sail to the Philippines in the months of December and January. This is an ideal time to visit since the tropical weather is still hot, but not stifling, and it’s before the rainy season begins. Since the weather is hot and humid, you’ll want to pack light, breathable clothing in natural fibers like cotton and linen. The style of dress is generally more conservative in the Philippines than you may be used to in the U.S. and other countries, so keep that in mind when packing.

Don’t forget to pack for the other ports you’ll be visiting during your Philippines cruise. Most will require similar clothing, but if you head farther north and plan to venture into any mountainous regions while in port, you’ll likely want some warmer layers.

The ports you’ll visit depend on the itinerary you choose. You can cruise to the Philippines on one of our Vietnam, Philippines, and Hong Kong itineraries, where you’ll sail between Hong Kong and Singapore, or cruise roundtrip from Singapore. Along the way, you’ll visit the beautiful Philippines cruise ports of call as well as cities in Vietnam. You’ll also have an overnight port of call in both Singapore and Hong Kong. On the roundtrip itinerary from Singapore that sails to the Philippines and back to Singapore, you’ll have an overnight in Hong Kong, and you’ll visit Malaysia and China.

Northern Palawan Cruise (Philippines)

Northern Palawan Cruise (Philippines)

Beautiful islands, spectacular coral reefs and diverse marine life, which can be enjoyed by both divers and non-divers. Nothing defines Palawan more than the water around it. With seascapes the equal of any in Southeast Asia, and wildlife terrestrial and aquatic, the Philippines’ most sparsely populated region is also the most enticing. Diving and island-hopping snorkelling trips in this part of the world manage to captivate both those seeking adventure and those wanting to relax.

Itinerary :

Day 1. Batangas Departure from Batangas International Port. Embarkation time is between 14 - 16 h. Boat Briefing and dinner.

Day 2. Apo Reef (3 dives) Divers: Apo Reef is regarded as one of the world's best diving locations. We will make a total of 3 dives today, 2 day dives and a night dive for those qualified. You can look forward to some spectacular dives with visibility of up to 40m or better. The reef begins at five meters depth, descending to approximately 40 m. The first dive will be a check out dive where you will be asked to demonstrate the 3 basic skills, mask clearing, regulator recovery and buoyancy control.

Non-divers: After Breakfast we will leave the ship for a full day on “Apo mayor- the biggest island in the park. The island is surrounded by a white sand beach, clear blue waters and very rich reefs of both hard and soft coral. There is an inland lagoon to visit as well as a lighthouse to climb. Some of the best snorkeling can be found here. For lunch we have a beautiful area with picnic tables shaded by leafy trees.

Day 3. Barracuda Lake - Siete Pecados (7 Islands) - Maquinit Hot Spring - Kayangan Lake Divers: 2 morning dives in Siete Pecados and Twin Peaks and 1 dive at the Barracuda lake

1) Twin Peaks is named after the two limestone formations that break the surface of the water. We descend along one of the rock walls adorned with large gorgonians. Turtles are frequently seen here. This dive is suitable for Advanced Open Water certified divers or higher.

2) Siete Pecados is home to a great variety of unusual tropical fish and a very rich coral environment. Scientists found 2 new coral species here within the last 5 years . This dive is suitable for Advanced Open Water certified divers or higher.

3) Barracuda Lake - a unique and highly unusual dive site. It is a deep, volcanic in-land lake where the water temperature increases with depth - roughly 1ºC per metre. The water is clear, but aside from some small c fish in the shallower parts, the lake is devoid of aquatic life. Divers come to appreciate the underwater pinnacles. However, an ancient old barracuda reportedly lives in the lake, hence the name. The lake is accessible through a short climb over stairs placed over jagged rocks.

Non-divers will visit award winning Kayangan Lake after breakfast . Snorkel along the edges of the lake to see what the pinnacles look like underwater. Some guests have compared it to the home of Superman. We return to the ship for lunch and then will have a snorkeling expedition at Siete Pecados. Transfer to the ship to freshen up and then transfer to Maquinit hot springs for dinner and a hot soak.

Day 4. Sangat Island - Culion Divers will be diving 3 wrecks today. Irako will be the destination for their first early morning dive. After a heavy breakfast, divers will depart for 2 dives with a packed lunch. Sangat or Tangat Wreck and the Olympia Maru are their 2nd & 3rd dives. Divers will meet up with the ship in Culion Island after the 3rd dive. Night Dive at Dynamite Point is available for those qualified.

Non-divers will depart for the beach on Sangat island for some snorkeling and beach fun. After lunch on the ship, they will depart for Culion and there will be a Church and Museum Tour. Culion used to be the home of one of the largest Leper Colonies in the Philippines and the laboratory and hospital equipment are now on display as well as historical photographs of the colony.

Day 5. Calumbuyan & North Cay Islands Divers: The Akitsushima is the one true warship of the Japanese Fleet that we will be visiting today. A Sea Plane tender, the crane lies in the sand not far from the hull, while an Anti Aircraft gun can be found right next to the deck lying on the sandy sea floor. Around the wreck is one of the few areas where divers can see Sea-whips in the shape of a harp. The second dive of the day will be at the freighter "Taiei Maru". The ship now rests on the side. It was hit by three torpedoes that all went through the same hole. The gigantic hole is now visible at 14 metres depth. Inside the ship, the two large engine boilers can be seen. The top side of the wreck is completely overgrown with corals, which attract plenty of crocodile fish. The afternoon dive will be at one of Calumbuyans beautiful reefs. Expect to find Coral bommies with colonies of giant sized grape corals. At 6 p.m. it is time for a night dive. We will explore North Cay , where we may see octopuses on the hunt and big moray eels leaving their shelters in search off food.

Non-divers : Guided Snorkeling trips are on the menu today for both Calumbuyan & North Cay islands in addition to the usual beach activities. This is the night for the Philippine Style Luau with a Roast Pig and other grilled seafood. Shoes NOT required for beach dancing.

Day 6. Dibotonai and Talampulan Islands Divers: Upon arriving at Dibotonai, we will cross to Black Island by boat where we will dive at the remains of the 50 m long "Nanshin Maru". It is a civilian tanker converted to carry special fuels in small isolated tanks for replenishment of land-based depots. The wreck rests upright on a sandy bottom at a maximum depth of 32 m. Visibility here is much better than at the other wrecks, 20-25 m or better is common. Near the wreck you can see plenty of scorpion fish, lion fish, groupers, and bat fish. In the afternoon we will make a dive at the northern reef of Dibotonai. If we are lucky, we may encounter the nearly extinct dugong (sea cow), which sometimes comes to graze on the sea grass in the area. A wide variety of crabs, octopuses, surgeon fish and puffer fish inhabit the reef.

Non-divers: Guided Snorkeling and beach activities in the morning and in the afternoon there will be a visit to the nearby fishermens village. Weather permitting there will be a basketball or volleyball game between the guests and crew and some of the villagers. We will bring pencils and crayons as well as small notebooks for the children of the village.

Day 7. Club Paradise, Dimakya Island (2 dives) Divers: We will be doing 2 morning dives, the first one shall be at Kyokozan Maru (Dimalanta Wreck). A 45 minute ride by chase boat, but divers will be rewarded with a beautiful WWII wreck that stands upright on a slope not far from Dimalanta Island. SUPERIOR TRIPLE CABINS

Arrive in the Philippines’ bustling capital Manila, a former port town now buzzing commercial hub, heritage centre and culinary hot spot, and transfer to your hotel where our group will spend the first night of the expedition. This evening meet your fellow voyagers and expedition guides over dinner at the hotel.

Enjoy breakfast at our hotel this morning before transferring to the airport for our short flight to Legazpi City. Upon arrival we will explore the Legazpi region, renowned for the classically shaped volcanic cone of Mount Mayon which dominates the skyline. Mayon Volcano National Park provides us with an opportunity to discover the volcanic geology of the region. Later this afternoon board Heritage Adventurer where the captain and expedition team will be waiting to greet you on arrival and show you to your cabin. You will have time to settle in and familiarise yourself with the ship; we will also take the opportunity to introduce your expedition team and our voyage plans. You are invited to join the expedition team in the Observation Lounge and up on the Observation Deck as we sail for Ticao Island.

Arriving at the tropical paradise of San Miguel Island this morning, our explorations may include visiting one of the Philippines’ best kept secrets – the unspoiled beauty of Halea Nature Park. Here we will be welcomed with an incredible cultural display by enthusiastic locals before options of beachcombing along this stunning stretch of white sand and exploring the incredible underwater world home to diverse corals, Yellow-lipped Sea Krait, Anemone Fish, Pipefish and juvenile Blacktip Reef Sharks. We may also have the opportunity to visit a local village.

An early rise with cameras at the ready is recommended this morning as the sun rises over Bohol Island’s famed Chocolate Hills. Often dubbed the ‘Eighth Wonder of the World,’ during the dry season the grass covering the more than 1,200 conical karst hills scattered across an area of 50 square kilometres turns a chocolatey brown creating this incredible phenomena best enjoyed from a viewing station some 200 steps up, but absolutely worth the effort. During our time here we may explore the lush countryside and famed cacao farms. Other highlights include a visit to a Tarsier Sanctuary to see the world’s second smallest primate the tiny Philippine Tarsier, the threatened species are protected in the Philippines but their numbers are declining due to logging, mining and the illegal pet trade, the coral stone Baclayon Church and National Cultural Treasure, and sampling The Pastry Capital of Bohol’s world famous Broa or Lady Fingers. This afternoon unwind on the pristine white sand beaches of Balicasag Island. Ringed by a reef and marine sanctuary enjoy an incredible underwater experience snorkelling impressive coral gardens and underwater cliffs teeming with colourful marine life including, if we are lucky, sea turtles.

Emerging from the shadow of its popular neighbour surfing hot spot Siargao Island, Bucas Grande Island combines stunning white sand beaches, with waterfalls, emerald green waters, mangroves, expansive limestone cave systems, iron wood forests, inland lakes, elaborate coral gardens, exotic wildlife and rightly famous 60-kilometre Sohoton Cove and National Park. Look for Rufous Hornbill as we explore this pristine tropical island paradise Zodiac cruising the coastline where quiet coves and beaches await discovery both above and below the water. Highlights here include Tojoman Lagoon/Sohoton Jellyfish Sanctuary where thousands of stingless jellyfish thrive, the iconic Blue Lagoon with its labyrinthine waterways comprised of numerous limestone islets and incredible snorkelling and swimming opportunities. At nearby Cinnamon Island, named after its abundance of cinnamon trees, a cup of the local delicacy, cinnamon tea, has become the traditional welcome.

Relax on board after our recent adventures, join a lecture or our naturalists on deck, update your photos/journal or watch the world go by in the Observation Lounge.

Berthing at the bustling, cosmopolitan harbour of Bitung, Manado city, we head for the nearby wildlife-filled jungles of Tangkoko Nature Reserve one of Indonesia’s oldest reserves. Spanning some 8,800 hectares from beaches to the peak of Tangkoko Mountain the reserve is a haven for endemic flora and fauna. Exploring the lowland tropical rainforest with local guides, we’ll be looking for the critically endangered Crested Black Macaque, known for their distinctive pink rumps and jet-black mohawks, symbol of Bitung and smallest primate in the world the saucer-eyed Tarsier and Sulawesi Bear Cuscus. For birders there’s the Knobbed Hornbills, Kingfishers, Sulawesi Myna, Lorikeets and Maleo birds, other flying highlights include the brightly-coloured Forester Moth and the Draco Flying Lizard or Sulawesi Lined Gliding Lizard.

Sitting on the Equator, Sulawesi’s culture capital and hidden paradise, Gorontalo combines rich history, the mountainous landscape is dotted with 500-year old Portuguese forts, with pristine white sand beaches, diving hot spot and reputation for being one of Indonesia’s top 4 places to swim with Whale Sharks. At Botubarani, a small seaside village, we plan to enjoy the unforgettable experience of swimming and snorkelling with these gentle giants which are known to grow more than 12-metres in length. Joining local boats and guides we will venture into Gorontalo Bay where plankton and small fish attract the world’s largest fish. This afternoon has been left free for exploration.

This morning we plan to explore the unspoiled paradise of remote and rarely visited Seho Island where beautiful sandy beaches and stunning coral reefs meet forested, wildlife filled hills and jungles. Explore the island with options for jungle hikes searching for birds and wildlife, beachcombing and snorkelling among an amazing carpet of multicoloured soft corals. This afternoon visit the township of Bobong on Taliabu Island before making our way to the local markets, spice plantations and experiencing the rich culture of this tropical outpost.

Fascinating and seldom visited, Buru Island is located at the boundary between the biogeographic zones of Australia and Asia. A high proportion of the species of birds and mammals here are found nowhere else with 10 endemic bird species and 4 endemic mammals as well as a number of near-endemic species. This morning we will explore these remote shores together with our expert naturalists and guides. Enjoy opportunities to explore the forests in search of wildlife and many of the endemic species and experience the hospitality of local communities during village visits.

Under consideration as a World Heritage Site due to its fascinating history as the centre of the Spice Islands trade and incredible biodiversity, Banda Neira is the main island in the archipelago of 10 tiny volcanic Banda Islands. Once the world’s sole source of nutmeg due to the islands’ native Myristica trees, the principal town of Banda Neira offers a glimpse into bygone days with its charming 17th century European relics including the five-sided Fort Belgica overlooking the harbour. Built in 1611 by the first Governor General of the Dutch East Indies and refurbished in the 90s it was designed to guard against sea threats and to protect the colonialists from any uprising locals. Across a narrow strait lies 640-metre cone of active volcano Gunung Banda Api which sits on its own island and is home to a variety of wildlife and bird species. Below the sparkling sapphire water the islands’ location near the centre of the Coral Triangle is evident with sprawling coral fields where myriad fish species including Scorpion, Ghost Pipefish, Napoleon Wrasse, Mandarin Fish, Hammerhead Sharks and more can be observed. Village visits and cultural immersions round out our time here including observing Banda’s famous Kora Kora canoes in action.

Today we explore Indonesia’s secret paradise – Kei Kecil Island, the crowning tropical jewel in the Kei Archipelago in the southeastern chain of the Maluku Islands. Located on the edge of the Coral Triangle’ Kei Kecil is home to some of Indonesia’s finest beaches where powdery white sands meet gin-clear turquoise waters, stunning coral reefs and palm-fringed tropical jungles. Most famous is Ngurbloat Beach, known locally as ‘Pasir Panjang’ the insta-worthy combination of flour-soft white sand luxuriously stretches some 5-kilometres flanked between thousands of coconut trees and glassy calm ocean. Located among some of the world’s most biologically rich waters snorkelling the extensive fringing and barrier reefs is exceptional and rewards with numerous colourful reef fish, Nudibranches, cephalopods, Dogtooth Tuna, Eagle and Manta Rays make up the mesmerising marine life.

Take the time to relax and reflect on an amazing experience as we recap the highlights and enjoy a farewell dinner this evening.

We arrive mid-morning in Darwin, Australia’s ‘northern gateway’ famous for its glittering harbour, World War II history and enviable tropical outdoor lifestyle. After breakfast there will be a complimentary coach to a central hotel or to Darwin International Airport. To allow time for disembarkation procedures and travel from Darwin, we do not recommend booking flights departing before 1300 hours.
