Want to see a bunch of classic, rally-spec 911s in the dust and dirt? Step this way

The folks at Tuthill Porsche have certainly had a busy year. Not only did they come out with the ultra-lightweight, restomodded 911K in August this year, but they also took 13 cars and a team of 70 people out to the East African Safari Classic Rally in February, and now we finally get to enjoy some brilliant images.

They’ve been released because Tuthill also has a full film about the 2022 event out on YouTube , so head to that link if you like your moving images as well as stills.

Aren’t these just the best shots, though? Classic, rally-prepped 911s and flamingos – there’s the collaboration we never knew we needed. 

Tuthill’s highest-placed finishers at this year’s rally – which covers up to 5,000km in Kenya and is only for pre-1986 cars – were ex-Junior WRC Champion Patrik Sandell and his co-driver Henrik Bolinder, who finished second overall. Oh, and the Tuthill team also happened to include a chap named Ken Block, who was taking on the rally for the first time with his co-driver Alex Gelsomino.

“The Safari rally is unique; it always has been it always will be,” said Richard Tuthill himself. 

“This year was no exception. The rescheduled date meant the climate was hotter and harsher than ever. Added to this we went North for the first time in a long time. The roads up there are extremely tough. 

“Measuring success is of course subjective. But in my mind this year, more than any, was a huge success.

“An amazing bunch of clients including many debuting not only in rallying terms but also in Safari terms led to a team atmosphere which was very, very special.

“Second place and six cars in the top 10 was quite an achievement and only made possible with a team of crazily great people. Can’t wait till the next one.”

Ken Block Will Pilot Tuthill Porsche’s Safari 911 In This Year’s East African Safari Classic Rally

Tuthill Porsche are returning to Kenya this year to compete in the 2021 East African Safari Classic Rally, and this year they’re bringing Ken Block along for the ride. Dubbed as the world’s most challenging historic motor sports event, the route through Kenya’s Northern Territory is 5,000 kilometers (3,107 miles) is grueling 9 day event.

Tuthill Porsche has seen much success in Africa, winning the rally 4 times already. Not only that, Tuthill’s wins come with some serious driving talent behind the wheel, including world champions Björn Waldegård and Stig Blomqvist. But Block isn’t intimidated by that record. “This will be a wild year!” said Ken. “The opportunity to do things like the Safari Rally with Tuthill Porsche is huge. I can’t wait to push myself to the absolute limit, across some of the gnarliest terrain, in an air-cooled 911 prepared by the best in the business.”

While Block has experience in Subarus and Fords rallying, the Safari 911 should be easy for him to sort out. “Ken’s proven skills and depth of experience will make him a serious contender in Kenya, and his boundless enthusiasm for all things rallying will enthrall the Safari Classic’s devoted audience,” said Richard Tuthill.

The 2021 East African Safari Classic Rally takes place November 1 through November 9, 2021. More information about the rally can be found here .

Watch 17 Air-Cooled Porsche 911s Run a Grueling 3000-Mile African Rally

The East African Safari Rally courses across Kenya and Tanzania. It's the perfect venue for Tuthill Porsche's rally-prepped vintage Porsches.

What does Tuthill bring to the event? Air-cooled 911s, of course.

In 2013, Tuthill took a team of 17 air-cooled Porsche 911s , along with a total crew of 120 members, to compete in the rally. All of the cars were built from the ground up to survive through the violently rough stages, with skidplates, push bars, and heavy-duty suspension.

Tuthill took a documentary crew to film the team's experience, start to finish. Although they weren't able to secure an outright win, all 17 cars made it to the finish line. With the biggest single rally team ever assembled, having all cars cross the line under their own power is nothing short of spectacular.

Although the video is 47 minutes in length, peeling your eyes away from the screen might prove difficult. It's full of old Porsches going full-out in one of the craziest rally ever. Who wouldn't want to see that?

Get ready for Porsche 911 rally action, taking on the 3,000-mile East African Safari Classic.

Tuthill Porsche takes classic Porsche 911s rallying. Though it’s not all they do, it’s why the company was founded. One of Tuthill’s latest rally efforts was the East African Safari Classic Rally — an event it’s attended for the last several years. This time around, the company has made a movie to showcase its cars, its struggles, and the rally itself.

Tuthill Porsche was founded by Francis Tuthill, the British rally driver who won the London-Sydney rally in 1993 behind the wheel of a Porsche 911. He later won the British Junior Rally championship and secured a factory drive with Mitsubishi in the World Rally Championship.

Now his company builds , maintains, restores, and modifies Porsche 911s, both classic and modern . If you want to go racing or take your 911 to some of the toughest rallies in the world, Tuthill can help — and can even run your crew on a rally. It supported 17 cars on the East African Safari Classic in 2013.

The rally covers more than 3,000 miles of roads up the eastern coast of the continent. That’s 9 days of punishing, high-speed driving.

At last year’s event, Tuthill brought a film crew along. To show off the action and, of course, make the team look good.

We’ve already gotten a very brief look at the highlights and lowlights of the event through the trailer for the film. Now the full thing has us wishing we were able to make it to next year’s event. Even if we can’t be in one of the company’s classic Porsche entries.

The driving itself will be as diverse as the landscape. Some days will require precise steering, while others will demand breakneck speed. Similarly, you’ll spend some time traveling in a convoy and other times solo. Each driver has to pass a short qualification test to ensure they’re up to the task.
