The Dissonance Tour: When Bowie met Reznor and redefined live music

In 1995, David Bowie and Trent Reznor embarked on the Dissonance tour, a unique live experience combining art rock and industrial metal, forever altering stage performances.

  • David Bowie
  • Music History

Over his career, David Bowie lived many different lives. From his Goblin King mystique to Ziggy Stardust glamour, the Starman embodied reinvention. In line with his role as the rock world’s most coveted chameleon, Bowie’s tours were equally as unpredictable; from all-out theatrics to spellbinding outfit changes, the rockstar played a key role in redefining what a live show had the potential to be.

When Bowie crossed paths with Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor in 1995, the pair would conjure up an entirely fresh live experience for their Dissonance tour, yet again pushing forward into bold, innovative new grounds.

Bowie and Reznor were an unconventional match made in heaven. The duo were two sides of the same coin; Bowie was the kingpin of art rock while Reznor pioneered the modern face of industrial metal, both undeniable trailblazers in their respective worlds of dazzling glitz and brooding grit.

Speaking to MTV, Bowie recalls his immediate fascination with NIN, stating how he made a point of sourcing and watching 1992’s ‘Happiness In Slavery’ after hearing MTV had banned the video. Bowie was so impressed that he immediately wanted to work with Reznor. “I like to be adventurous in terms of what I do on-stage as well as with the music, so I phoned up Trent’s management to find out if there would be any interest in Trent working with me on the tour,” he recalls.

Despite Bowie being Reznor’s artistic hero, Reznor was actually bigger than Bowie at the time – 1995 was the year following the release of NIN’s 1994 magnum opus The Downward Spiral . “We’re bigger than Bowie when that tour came up… but I say the only way we’ll play is if we open for him,” Reznor explains on a recent Rick Rubin podcast.

The pair decided to share the headline slot – almost passing on the baton mid-set. “I said, ‘I’ll give up my ending if you give up your entrance, and let’s make it so the show goes from us to you,’” Reznor explains. Bowie explained it to MTV as an almost ‘two-act play’, with NIN’s minimalism slowly edging into Bowie’s bombastic, multi-textural sonic flurry of larger-than-life art rock.

Bowie would emerge midway through NIN’s set, and the pair would collaborate on a few tracks before Reznor would eventually slink into the shadows. Whether Bowie is sashaying to Reznor’s grooving sax playing for ‘Subterraneans’, or Bowie is crooning along to the devastating ache of ‘Hurt’, the duo complement one another perfectly.

The yin and yang of the two acts is a total treat, elevating the atmospheric punch of NIN anthems or twisting funky Bowie cuts into something grittier and more hard-hitting. At times, it’s clear Reznor is in utter disbelief, grinning to himself as he soaks in every second.

Unfortunately, certain crowds didn’t appreciate the art of the performance. With clashing fanbases and Bowie’s reluctance to play fan favourites, instead focusing on unreleased tracks from his forthcoming Outside album, reviews from the time state that NIN were “the band most people really came to see.”

Bowie said there was an “almost 100% Nails audience,” and that he “had to adjust emotionally to the fact that we were going to be challenged every night to get in sync with what people were coming to the show for…. The more we did that, the more it communicated to the audience. That’s how it went from survival to being a good tour.”

The experience only cemented Reznor’s adoration of Bowie. “My whole adult life, I’ve looked at Bowie… as a guy fearlessly reinventing himself and unafraid of throwing away things that aren’t broken to fearlessly try new shit,” he explains to Rick Rubin. “And I was watching him do it, right in front of me.”

While Bowie has in the past described the tour as an act of “commercial suicide”, it’s a total success for art and live music. “I don’t know of any tour like it and I don’t know if you’ll see another one either,” he mused to MTV back in ‘95 – and, to this day, we still haven’t seen anything like it.

David Bowie 1995-1996 Outside Tour

The Outside Tour, with David Bowie and Nine Inch Nails co-headlining, opened on 14 September 1995 at Meadows Music Theatre – Hartford, CT with Prick as support band. On selected dates Reeves Gabrels performed songs from his album, The Sacred Squall of Now in addition to performing with Nine Inch Nails and David Bowie. The opening of the concert tour preceded the release of the 1. Outside album which was released on 25 September 1995.

In a 2012 Rolling Stone reader’s poll, the tour (pairing Nine Inch Nails with Bowie) was named one of the top 10 opening acts in rock history.

Tour history

This tour was Bowie’s first since he retired his hits with his previous Sound+Vision Tour (1990). Bowie said, “We’re going to play some older material, sure, but not obvious things. I found, while rehearsing for the [Outside] tour, that older songs I haven’t played for years suddenly fit in with this new material quite well – things like … “Joe the Lion.” So I’m quite looking forward to it.” Other songs from Bowie’s back catalog that he performed during the tour include “Scary Monsters”, “Look Back in Anger”, “Andy Warhol” and “Breaking Glass”.

Bowie spoke on why he chose to tour with Nine Inch Nails:

I personally did like the combination of NIN and me, but my fans didn’t. Bad luck!! It also was an extremely young audience, between about 12 and 17 years old. My starting point was simply: I’ve just made an adventurous album, what can I do now to turn the concerts as adventurous. Looking at it in that way, it seemed logic to confront myself with the NIN audience. I knew it would be hard to captivate them by music they never heard, by an artist whose name was the only familiar thing.

Trent Reznor has gone on record numerous times as being heavily influenced by David Bowie,[5] and further collaborated with Bowie by remixing “The Hearts Filthy Lesson” and later on 1997’s “I’m Afraid of Americans” single. When asked in 1995 if his album Outside was influenced by Nine Inch Nails, Bowie answered, “the band that I was actually quite taken with was three guys from Switzerland call The Young Gods … I’d been aware of them previous to knowing about Nine Inch Nails.”

For the tour, Bowie went with a modest stage design (“some banners, some mannequins”) and avoided the theatrical presentation like his previous Glass Spider Tour in 1987 and Sound+Vision Tour in 1990.

Performance note

Bowie opened an interview for the tour with USA Today on the opening day of the tour, on 14 September 1995 with the question “How do you commit commercial suicide? Well, you do this: play songs from an album that hasn’t been released yet, and complement it with obscure songs from the past that you’ve never done on stage.”

During the tour, as Nine Inch Nails reached the conclusion of their performance, the two bands played together with both Nine Inch Nails and Bowie and his band performing “Subterraneans”, “Hallo Spaceboy” and “Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps)”, followed by two Nine Inch Nails songs “Reptile” and “Hurt” after which Bowie continued with his own set alone.

Early in the tour, the “almost 100% Nails audience” provided a challenge to Bowie, who said “In those first weeks, we had to adjust emotionally to the fact that we were going to be challenged every night to get in sync with what people were coming to the show for. But then you start to recognize that if you’re going to continue, you’d better enjoy what you’re doing. The more we did that, the more it communicated to the audience. That’s how it went from survival to being a good tour.”

Other opening acts

For the European leg of the tour, Morrissey was enlisted to provide support until his disappearance before the Aberdeen Exhibition Centre performance on 29 November 1995. The support slot was filled on later dates by The Gyres, Echobelly, Placebo and a variety of local bands.

 Live recordings

The 13 December 1995 performance at the National Exhibition Centre (Hall 5) – Birmingham, England, billed as the Big Twix Mix Show with Alanis Morissette, Lightning Seeds and Echobelly supporting was filmed by BBC TV with excerpts broadcast at a later date.

I also would like to know the lighting designer as it was very interesting and had very rich color schemes….the best since 1978

thank you ,I changed it

The Belfast Show Was Postponed as he played the MTV EMA awards show instead and was 23/11/95 not 24/11/95

The rescheduled date was 05/12/95 and the opening / support act was local band Peacefrog

As I could never attend a Diamond Dogs show being 15 years old and living in the UK the Outside tour was truly the next best thing. A show encompassing all the best of Bowie: offbeat choice of more unusual tracks, powerful performance, quintessentially weird and “My Death”. “What else do you want. And I managed to get some great photos on this one off occasion in an under the radar show at Exeter. A memorable show and tour for those fans that preferred the unusual.

Does anyone know who was the lighting designer for this tour? Never thought to find out, but this person’s skill had a profound affect on me and my photographic work. Wanted to give them props for their skill and craft 🙂 thanks – Chris ( http://www.MISTERLYNCH.com )

on stage full of swinging instruments, sweat dripping, and roaring vocals, david bowie graces the stage gloriously clad in white; as if nothing can touch him. he looks grounded and never lost. i cannot imagine how it must've felt for trent to see bowie performing a song he once wrote in his bedroom.

Hearing the opening to Reptile and seeing Bowie walk up to the microphone... ohhhh so cool, it sounded amazing, so wonderful and spooky and his stage presence alongside the band was so awesome. Hearts Filthy Lesson was really mad live as well, but need more Downward Spiral Bowie covers and it makes me so annoyed he didn't do that. Camera work was nice yeah and Trent Reznor whatever

The way they did their show with NIN opening and Bowie joining for last couple songs while NIN stayed for first couple Bowie songs is SO COOL to me and that would b incredible if other artists / tours could pull it off, too

Vocal duets with Trent Reznor, ranked:

-David Bowie ("Reptile," Dissonance, 1995) -Peter Murphy ("Head Like A Hole," various radio appearances, 2006) -Tori Amos ("Past the Mission," Under The Pink, 1994) -My mother (The "bow down" part of "Head Like A Hole," with the car stereo when I was 14, 1997)

Just being able to see Bowie on stage singing Hurt, scary monsters, Hallo Spaceboy and a bunch of  other songs with Trent Goddamn Reznor is absolutely wonderful. It’s definitely a pretty typical concert recording however NIN and Bowie are both forces of nature when it comes to stage presence. There’s a lot of magic to the 90s flair that the editing has and I can’t help but enjoy myself when two of my favorite things in music are performing together.

Outside is one of the most underrated albums of all time and Reznor is absolutely crazy on stage and I love that for him.

7/10 Great stuff

David Bowie, young in his own industrial foray comes to creatively meet with NIN, pioneers in this heavy but new mid 90s movement, also inspired by his earlier works. The energy of the show would really characterise not either artist, but the music of the time that they both, from such different angles would feed into - Industrial sound is centre-stage here, and it's a pained, exhausting output of raw emotion that draws some late 20th century defining art from the pair. It's a well put together back and forth of each's music, and how Bowie plays into the NIN material, and how NIN plays into the Bowie material, that's the beauty of these collaborative performances - the stage is…

Subterraneans

david bowie nine inch nails dissonance tour

"Subterraneans" is a song by David Bowie , performed live by Bowie and Nine Inch Nails frequently on the Dissonance Tour in 1995. The song was resurrected for the Cold And Black And Infinite Tour and the NIN 2022 tour.

  • David Bowie - Low
  • The version of this song live with NIN has never been released

When performed live with NIN, Bowie sang lyrics from his song "Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps)" slowly and in his lower register instead of the album lyrics. Trent Reznor played saxophone during these performances. This song was always lead in by " Eraser " and followed by "Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps)."

In 2018, a version of the song was performed during the Cold And Black And Infinite Tour, still with a saxophone, incorporating lyrics from " God Break Down The Door " and " Over And Out " into it, and notes from " The Frail " at the end.

When performed live with NIN on the Dissonance Tour, these lyrics were replaced with lines from "Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps)," which always followed this song:

During the Cold And Black And Infinite Tour, lyrics from "God Break Down The Door" and (slightly modified) lyrics from "Over And Out" were sung in a similar way as the above "Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps)":
