We suggest you consider staying for at least one night on Capri or in Naples to be able to enjoy the island to the fullest. Please note: In the high season months of July and August, the island is very hot and crowded. We do not recommend attempting a day trip during this season, as you may find that you spend most of your time waiting in long lines for attractions and transportation. Either opt for a day trip in a quieter season, avoiding the high-season crowds, or plan to spend at least one night on Capri. Getting from Rome to Capri

Decide on an itinerary before you set off from Rome, keeping in mind that you won't be able to see everything on the island in just one day. Try to depart as early as possible in the morning, and opt for the fastest possible transportation option. The fastest public transportation to reach Capri from Rome is the high-speed train that runs from the Termini station in Rome to the central train station in Naples in about an hour and 15 minutes. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, Sorrento was ruled by the Ostrogoths and later turned into an autonomous duchy in the 9th century. There were frequent confilcts between Amalfi, the Saracens, and Lombardic duchies.

The latter of which besieged Sorrento. In 1035 it was acquired by Guaimar IV of Salerno, and eventually was annexed to the Kingdom of Sicily. After much back-and-forth, it was officially annexed to the new Kingdom of Italy in 1861.

From Rome to Capri: 5 Best Ways to Get There

Only 130 miles from Rome as the crow flies, the idyllic Isle of Capri is close enough for a day trip or a relaxing two- or three-day getaway from the city's busy tourist scene. Because it's an island, the only way to reach Capri is by sea or by helicopter; there is no airport. Ferries connect to the island year-round from both Naples and Sorrento.

If you are not interested in doing it yourself, one of the easiest ways of getting from Rome to Capri is on a Capri Day Trip from Rome. These organized tours will take the complexity out of the whole experience. Below are details on a variety of ways of getting from Rome to Capri.

The most popular way to reach Capri from Rome is by train to Naples and then a ferry to the island. Trains for Naples leave from Roma Termini central train station . The fastest is Eurostar Frecciarossa (TAV), just over an hour between Rome and Naples. It is also the most expensive.

For about half the price, you can take the Intercity, which takes about two hours. Most economical is the Interegionali, about half the cost of the Intercity and taking twice as long - nearly four hours. This budget option won't work for a day trip, but is a practical alternative if you plan to spend a night in Naples or on Capri.

If you plan to go directly to Capri on arrival at Rome's Fiumicino Airport , take the Leonardo Express shuttle train to the Roma Termini station and transfer to a train for Naples. Plan a minimum of three hours from arrival time in Rome to Capri if you arrive early in the day and make all the connections. If your flight arrives in the late afternoon, plan to stay over in Rome or Naples.

Ferries leave from two different piers in Naples. High-speed ferries, which take about 40 minutes to get to Capri, depart from Molo Beverello in Piazza Municipio; regular ferries and slow ferries (50 minutes and 80 minutes respectively) leave from Calata di Massa, farther east along the waterfront. As you might expect, high-speed ferries are the most expensive, slow ferries the least. Between the various types of boat, ferry schedules offer frequent and continuous service throughout the day.

To get to the Molo Beverello from Naples Train Station (Napoli Centrale), you can either take a taxi (easier if you have a close connection or a lot of luggage) or Linea 1 of the subway in the "Piscinola" direction. Get off at Piazza Municipio and walk about 100 meters to the ferry.

You can reach both ports by Alibus, which stops in Piazza Garibaldi outside the station (buy tickets on the bus). Ask the driver to stop on Via Marina for Calata Porta di Massa; if you miss the stop, ride on to Piazza Municipio, the stop for Molo Beverello, and take the free shuttle bus between the two ports.

Be sure to check ferry status and schedules the day before you travel - they change often, and in rough sea conditions high-speed ferries don't operate. You can also arrange for a seamless transfer between the train station and your hotel on Capri by taxis and fast ferry.

A convenient way to see the island and its attractions without having to make all the connections and arrangements yourself is on a Capri Day Trip from Rome . In Naples, leave your car at Parcheggio Buono, at Molo Beverello, or Parcheggio Brin at Via Marina for Calata Porta di Massa (you can use either, as a bus connects the two ports). In Sorrento, ferries for Capri depart from the Marina Piccola, and you can park right there in Garage Marina Piccola or use the Parcheggio Correale, taking a taxi to the port.

Along with a chance to see lovely Sorrento, an advantage of this route is the scenery, as the ferry passes alongside a beautiful stretch of the Amalfi coast. The ferry schedule offers frequent departures daily. A faster, but more expensive option from Sorrento is a private speedboat , which takes about 20 minutes and usually includes a taxi directly to your hotel. Tips on Renting a Car in Rome

• If you are not an EU citizen, you will need an International Driving Permit. You can apply for one through the AAA in the United States or from a post office in Great Britain or Northern Ireland.
• Collision damage waiver (CDW) insurance is mandatory in Italy, but most credit card companies don't offer car rental insurance in Italy. It is less expensive to include this prepaid insurance when you book a car in advance rather than adding the option at the pick-up desk.
• Car rentals are cheaper for non-EU citizens when booked in advance from your home country, as you will not be subject to taxes - which are quite high - that EU residents must pay. A good way to do this is through an agency such as AutoEurope , which works with all the major rental companies to find you the best price.
• If you plan to pick up a rental car at the airport, be prepared for lines and waits of more than an hour.

How to get to Capri from Rome

The first step is to get to Naples. The high speed train from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale is called the Frecciarossa and takes just over an hour. If you book in advance, a one-way ticket can cost as little as €16.90. You can also take an “Italo” fast train, which is as good as Frecciarossa and can be even cheaper. Take an early train from Rome and you can be in Naples as early as 8:00.

Ferries and hydrofoils to Capri depart from two main ports: Molo Beverello and Calata Porta di Massa. They’re located next to each other. To reach the port from the train station, it’s a 35 minute walk or a 15 minute taxi journey. For a more relaxing day, we’d recommend taking a taxi.

You can buy ferry tickets at the port, but it’s best to book in advance, especially in the summer. Tickets for convenient ferry times at busy times of the year sometimes sell out. The journey time from Naples to Capri can be anything from 40 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes, depending on the boat you get. Prices for a one-way ticket range from €14 to €22.

When you get off the boat in Capri, you’ll find yourself in the Marina Grande. From here you can either take a boat to take a tour around the island and, eventually, visit the Grotta Azzurra (Blue Grotto), or take the funicular up to the town. There might be a line, mostly in the summer time, but it’s usually pretty fast.  Tickets for the funicular are available at the ticket desk nearby; you can reach Capri city center (the famous “Piazzetta”) also by bus or taking one of the typical convertible taxis. During the high season (May-September) it might be hard to find a taxi, so it could be a good idea to book one in advance. To get back to Rome at the end of your day trip to Capri, obviously you just have to repeat these steps in reverse. Give yourself plenty of time to get back, as boat departures can be affected by bad weather, and a delay might lead to you missing your train back to Rome.

Tips for planning your Capri tour

• Book transport in advance . We recommend booking train and ferry tickets in advance, to save money and to be sure of a seat on the train and a place on the boat. This is especially important if you’re planning on visiting in the summer.
• Make an early start . The earliest high speed train from Rome to Capri leaves Termini at 7:00, getting you to Naples just after 8:00. That allows you to take one of the earlier ferries to Capri, so you can be at the Marina Grande in Capri at around 10:30. It’s worth making an early start to make the most of your day in Capri.
• Avoid visiting Capri in July or August . In the summer Capri is heaving with tourists and the crowds can be overwhelming. The town is small so it can be hard to get away from the tourist hordes. So, if possible, visit at another time of the year – spring and autumn in Capri are lovely. In June the wether is usually lovely, but the island is really crowded.
• Don’t set your heart on visiting the Grotta Azzurra . This grotto is one of Capri’s top attractions, but tourists are often disappointed to find it closed. Even on a hot sunny day, a choppy sea means that the grotto will be closed to visitors.
• Plan your day . Capri is small, but there’s lots to see and do. Take a stroll around the Piazzetta, visit the Giardini di Cesare Augusto, do a boat tour of the island, check out the beaches (especially Marina Piccola) or the beautiful Villa San Michele in Anacapri, which is the other town of the island. If you like hiking then don’t miss  Villa Jovis (once the home of the Emperor Tiberius): it’ll be hard to walk there, but it will also be worth it.

What to Expect

Our driver Bruno will pick you up at the hotel at 7:30 am with a comfortable minivan for up to 8 passengers and will take you to Pompeii around 10 am, where a tour guide will be waiting for you for a 2-hour guided tour of the ruins of Pompeii.

At the end of the guided tour, around 12:00 in the morning, you will meet Bruno to board his comfortable minivan and go to the Port of Sorrento . Once you arrive at the port of Sorrento, around 1:00pm, our driver parks the minivan to come with you to take the ferry to the island of Capri .

After about half an hour by ferry, you will finally arrive in Capri to start a fantastic one hour boat ride to visit the whole island of Capri and its beautiful coves, including the Blue Grotto .

After the boat ride around 3pm, we will take the chairlift to go to Anacapri where we will spend about an hour relaxing and taking fantastic photos.

At about 5.00 pm we will return to Capri to board the ferry and return to Sorrento. After about an hour we will arrive in Sorrento, where you will board our comfortable minivan to go and taste an excellent limocello .

At around 7:00 pm we get back on board our minivan to go to Rome. After about two hours of travel you will arrive at your hotel in Rome and the tour will end.

Trains Are Easy To Navigate, Be Careful Not To Lose Your Luggage, And More Things That Both Delighted And Surprised Me About Traveling To Italy

L ast month, my boyfriend and i traveled to italy for a wedding. luckily, i had already visited italy with my family during high school, so this was my second visit to the country., i was around 14 when my family and i traveled on our nine-day trip to rome, florence, and a few other cities. there is something to say about traveling at a younger age with your family and them handling all the planning and logistics of the trip..

I n the past, I would simply go with the flow and never really thought about how we ended up at our destination. During that family trip to Italy, we relied on a tour group to handle a lot of the planning. However, when it came time to plan my own trip to Italy, I felt overwhelmed. Despite this, we managed to plan the entire trip on our own.

We were invited to a friend's wedding in Florence in early September and knew we wanted to extend the trip to be able to travel elsewhere in Italy. Although I had ample time to plan, I procrastinated and planned just about everything pretty last minute for an out-of-the-country trip.

We decided that we wanted to explore a beach town in italy (something that had a different feel from a populated city like florence). the island of ischia — which is off the coast of naples, not far from amalfi coast — was recommended to me by a travel agent friend, so we decided on that., overall, our trip was amazing and i cannot wait to go back to italy — or another part of europe. the experience taught me a lot, and i would love to share some of my takeaways whether you're looking for inspiration for your next trip or just have a passion for travel., 1. english is spoken in some parts of italy more than others., although english is the second-most spoken language in italy, that doesn't mean you'll find all italian citizens speaking it fluently..

After attending a wedding in Florence, we headed to the underrated, beautiful island of Ischia. Although it's not as popular as nearby islands like Capri and Amalfi Coast, it's equally stunning. 

During our stay in Sant' Angelo, a quiet, small fisherman's village in Ischia, my boyfriend and I had to rely heavily on Google Translate to communicate. Living like a local was a wonderful experience, as we were not surrounded by American tourists all the time. However, there were instances where it was difficult to communicate certain things, especially my boyfriend's nut allergy when we were out at a restaurant. 

Most people assumed that we spoke Italian, so we had to quickly type out what we were trying to convey on the Google Translate app. It didn't really bother us, but it was one of the disadvantages of traveling to a non-touristy area of a country.

2. Do your research and familiarize yourself with the vibe of the city or village you want to visit before getting there.

It turns out that although ischia isn't a very big island (it's only 18 square miles ), each village offers something a little bit different. upon booking where on the island we would stay, i honestly didn't do a ton of research so it wasn't until we got to sant' angelo and settled in did we find out that it's a very quiet fisherman's village with stunning beaches — but not much nightlife..

Honestly, this was fine for us because it made for the perfect, most relaxing vacation.  Depending on the vibe you're looking for while on your vacation, I recommend doing extensive research first especially if it's in another county .

3. If you're in a city like Florence, it's worth carrying around a reusable water bottle to refill at drinking fountains.

It was particularly useful when walking around in the heat. additionally, in italy, you have to pay for water at restaurants, so waiters do not refill your glass as frequently as they do in america. as a result, i was always left thirsty after our meals., 4. if you purchase a ferry ticket online in italy, you must validate it before boarding., on that note, make sure to give yourself enough time to validate your ticket because the lines get long and those ferries seem to leave right on their scheduled time..

The port in Naples from where our ferry was departing had several other ferries going to popular destinations such as the Amalfi Coast and Capri. As a result, the lines of people waiting to validate their tickets before boarding their respective ferries were quite long.

5. Traveling by train is an easy and quite enjoyable experience.

After boarding the train, a conductor came by to validate our digital ticket (you can also print a hard copy if preferred). despite the crowds, the italian train stations were not as chaotic or confusing as i had anticipated., 6. utilize public transportation to save some money., 7. compare the prices of an airbnb versus a hotel., 8. wear (or bring) something that covers your shoulders and knees in churches., 9. if you're traveling in italy using multiple modes of transportation, add unique identifiers to your luggage to easily differentiate it., when my boyfriend got off the train in a hurry, he mistakenly grabbed a black hard-shell suitcase that looked similar to his black away bag. since he hadn't put anything to distinguish his bag, he ended up taking someone else's bag, and they took his..

To cut a long story short, to swap the luggage, it turned out to be quite the adventure, that we now call "luggage gate." The lesson we learned here is to always put something on your luggage that makes it stand out from similar-looking bags.

10. It's helpful to carry extra euros for situations where cash is needed.

To avoid paying hefty conversion fees at an international atm, i recommend you order euros from your local bank a few weeks before your trip. most banks don't have euros on hand, so you'll need to call or visit the bank and ask a teller to order them for you. the euros will be delivered to your home once they arrive. unfortunately, i didn't know this and had to pay conversion fees at the airport in rome., 11. a typical breakfast in italy is very different from an american breakfast., 12. small shops close during the day at lunch and will reopen later in the afternoon — or in our experience, not reopen at all., unfortunately, every time i went back to it to shop, it was either closed for a long lunch break or it was just completely closed, we asked our airbnb host (who also owned her own boutique in the village we were staying in) and she said for the most part, shop owners make up their own hours of operation. i was kicking myself for not knowing this sooner because i just assumed the boutique i wanted to shop in would of course be open the next day at the same time., 13. there's so much more to italian cuisine than just pizza and pasta., have you been to italy what regions did you love the most what tips would you give to others planning a trip share it all with me in the comments below.

There was a massive storm which hit just as we arrived at Pisa which limited our experience there. • 971sergioc 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Horrible If I could give it 0 stars I would. This excuse of a “tour” is a waste of time money and killed brain cells along the way. I have a masters in marketing and worked in the hotel industry for years. The least that could be excepted after this treacherous experience would be a full refund. One works extremely hard to be on vacation in the first place, the company can not refund the time we wasted that day or the hours spent working be able to have off, the least they could do is give us our money back. The tour leader was an hour late, she was disorganized and lacked of empathy for her actions. we lost time in every part of the trip including the tower of Pisa, which they gave us a whopping 20 minutes to admire, I understand given the size of Italy that the bus rides are long they even say that on the website however it is undisputedly ridiculous that the consumers were paying for the mistakes and disorganization the company made. To make matters worse, the bus was over an hour and a half late to take us back from Florence, the guide walked us back and forth in inhumane conditions with 100 degree weather, which although they can’t control, the bus should have been on schedule or at the very least should have notified us in advanced , seeing as to the fact we only had an hour in Florence to begin with.
