The Perfect Catalina Island Day Trip: How to Spend One Day

TL;DR: The perfect Catalina Island day trip begins with a ferry ride to the scenic town of Avalon, where you can take golf carts to nearby viewpoints, snorkel in the clear waters, kayak along the coves, and indulge in fresh lobster rolls—all for around $200-$300 per person.

Catalina Island boasts 75 square miles of hilly terrain, beautiful beaches, kelp forests, and one of California’s most popular multi-day treks – the 38.5-mile Trans-Catalina Trail.

The island also happens to be one of the best day trips to do in Southern California since it’s only 22 miles off the coast and only about an hour by ferry from Los Angeles and Orange County.

The perfect Catalina Island Day Trip

It wasn’t until a couple of years ago that I finally made the trip to Santa Catalina Island myself. It had always been on my radar, as many of the islands off the coast of California have been for years, but I just never made it happen.

That is until I found myself with an extra day after a trip to Disneyland . I quickly decided to finally experience Catalina Island once I realized how easy it was to get to the island.

Based on that trip, this is my full itinerary for the perfect Catalina Island day trip for anyone who is also looking for a unique and easy day trip.

By the end of it, you’ll know exactly what to expect with a day trip to Catalina Island, how to get there, and what to do to soak up the best that this island has to offer.

How to Get to Catalina Island

Unless you know someone who has a sailboat or helicopter, the easiest way to get to Catalina Island is by ferry. There are two boat companies that take passengers to the island – Catalina Express and Catalina Flyer .

The vast majority of people visiting the island will take the high-speed ferry with Catalina Express since it leaves from more locations, including San Pedro, Long Beach, and Dana Point and travels to both Avalon and Two Harbors.

The Catalina Flyer, on the other hand, only leaves from Newport Beach.

how to get to catalina island

Here are the options for doing a trip to Catalina Island from the mainland.

From Los Angeles

Long Beach is the most popular and active port for traveling to Catalina by ferry. The ferries that leave from the Long Beach Port take about an hour and only travel to Avalon.

During the off-season, there are only two departures and returns per day. This is when I went so I just had to be mindful of ferry times to make sure I didn’t miss the only late afternoon ferry back to the island.

You also have to squeeze in a bit more if you’re trying to do a day trip during the off-season since the earliest ferry leaves around 7:00 am from Long Beach and starts its return from Avalon at 4:15 pm.

During the summer, you’ll find up to 6-9 departures and returns per day so you can be more flexible with your day trip to Catalina Island. Shoulder seasons can fluctuate so you’ll need to check the ferry schedules ahead of time before planning your trip.

Get your FREE Los Angeles Mini Guide + a printable checklist with 100+ things to do in the city!

San Pedro has fewer departures and returns but it’s also the only port with ferries that go to Two Harbors as well as Avalon. And similar to the Long Beach Port, the number of ferries leaving and returning per day depends on the time of year.

In the off-season, it’s usually only a couple of departures and returns per day and that goes up to around 5-6 to Avalon and 7-9 to Two Harbors in the high season.

The ferry from San Pedro to Avalon takes about an hour and 15 minutes and the ferry from San Pedro to Two Harbors takes about two hours.

Book the Catalina Express from Long Beach or San Pedro here .

From Orange County

If you’re coming from Orange County or San Diego, you’ll probably want to leave from Dana Point. The ferries from Dana Point travel to Avalon and there are only a couple of departures and returns year-round.

The ferry from Dana Point takes about an hour and a half one way to get to Catalina Island.

Newport Beach

The ferry that leaves from Newport Beach is run by the Catalina Flyer instead of the Catalina Express. There is only one departure and return per day from this port and it only travels to Avalon. The journey takes just over an hour.

How Much Does the Catalina Ferry Cost?

Round trip tickets for the Catalina Express are $74.50 for adults, $67.50 for seniors 55+, and $59 for children under 12. You can book them here .

Round trip tickets for the Catalina Flyer are $70 for adults, $65 for seniors 60+, and $53 for children 12 and under.

Visiting Avalon vs Two Harbors

To keep things simple, I put together this Catalina day trip itinerary based on starting your day in Avalon. There are a few reasons for this.

First off, most of the ferries that travel to Catalina Island only go to Avalon and back (with the exception of the San Pedro ferries), so you have a lot more choices if you’re doing a day trip to Avalon.

Secondly, there’s a lot more to do in and around downtown Avalon compared to the more remote Two Harbors. So if you only have a day, Avalon is the better option for more things to do.

And lastly, it’s quicker to get to Avalon. Avalon takes anywhere from an hour to an hour and a half to get to depending on which port you’re leaving from, whereas Two Harbors takes two hours to travel to.

If you only have a day, you’ll want as much time as possible on the island so I recommend sticking to Avalon.

The Perfect Catalina Island Day Trip Itinerary: 6 Things to do on Catalina Island

Walk around town & shop the local boutiques.

Estimated Time: 30 min – 1 hour

plan a trip to catalina island - what to do

When you first arrive in the city of Avalon, I’d recommend spending some time getting acquainted with the cute downtown area and exploring the local boutiques.

Also, if you plan to do an afternoon tour but haven’t already booked one ahead of time, the dock area is where you should do that once you arrive.

Stop by the Catalina Island Coffee & Cookie Co for a fresh cup of coffee and maybe a bite to eat if you haven’t had breakfast yet. I’d highly recommend trying one of their delicious cinnamon rolls (if there are any left).

Then simply walk around the small area that makes up downtown Avalon. Poke your head into shops and find some souvenirs that you might want to pick up later before you hop on the ferry back to the mainland.

If you’re a photographer, this is also a great time to get some initial shots of Catalina Island and its scenic harbor with its famous casino in the background.

Check Out the Best Viewpoints & Go for a Short Hike

Estimated time: 2-3 hours

rent a golf cart and take in the viewpoints

Once you’re caffeinated, it’s time to explore the island by foot and golf cart.

There are hardly any cars on Catalina Island, except for those that belong to the few thousand people who actually live on the island. This means most visitors get around the island by golf cart.

You’ll find rentals near the dock area by the hour. I’d recommend going with Catalina Golf Cart Rentals .

They also have a map for a 12-mile scenic route that takes about an hour to complete which is a good place to start if it’s your first time on the island.

Note: For rentals, you have to be at least 21 years old and provide a valid driver’s license. Renting a golf cart from Catalina Golf Cart Rentals also requires a $50 deposit and it’s cash-only but there’s a nearby ATM.

Rentals run at about $50/hour and there’s usually a deal where if you buy two hours you’ll get the third hour free.

Once you have your rental sorted, make sure to include these stops while exploring the island:

  • Buena Vista Point
  • Lover’s Cove Scenic Vista
  • 3 Palms Scenic Overlook (this one is probably my favorite view on Catalina Island)
  • Ocean Scenic Overlook
  • Wrigley Botanical Garden

short hikes on catalina island

And if you’re up for a short hike, head up to the Catalina Island Conservancy near the Wrigley Botanical Garden and tackle one of these hikes:

  • Garden to Sky Trail (2.8 miles)
  • Trans-Catalina Trail to Lone Tree Viewpoint (3 miles)
  • Hermit Gulch Trail (3.4 miles)

Hit the Water

Estimated Time: 2 hours

water activities on catalina island

You can’t visit Catalina Island and not do at least one water activity while you’re in town.

The surrounding waters around the island are full of diverse marine life, kelp forests, and clear waters that are some of the warmest in Southern California.

It’s no surprise then that it’s a great spot for scuba diving, snorkeling, or exploring the water through a boat ride, kayaking , or standup paddleboarding.

Here are a few activities to choose from:

  • Snorkeling – You can either do a guided tour if you’re not familiar with snorkeling or simply rent a snorkel and go by yourself. A few of the best spots for snorkeling near Avalon include Casino Point Dive Park/Avalon Dive Park (there are snorkel rentals near the park) and Lover’s Cove (a more secluded spot so you should pick up snorkels in Avalon before heading here). If you want to do a tour, I’d recommend going with Snorkeling Catalina .

snorkeling on catalina island - lover's cove

  • Scuba diving – You can book a scuba tour with Catalina Scuba (they offer tours for both certified divers and those without any experience).
  • Kayaking or SUPing – If you prefer to explore above the water, renting a kayak or standup paddleboard (or going on a tour) is an ideal option. Since the water is usually very clear around the shores of Catalina, you can still see a lot from above the water. You can find kayak or SUP rentals from Wet Spot Rentals (they also have snorkel rentals) or Descanso Beach Ocean Sports offers tours and rentals.
  • Dolphin & whale watching – If you’re not a fan of getting wet but still want to experience the marine life around Catalina Island, you can go on a two-hour dolphin and whale watching tour with Catalina Diver Supply .
  • Jet skiing – If you’re just looking for a bit of fun out on the water, you can rent jet skis from Catalina Jet Ski .
  • Parasailing – If you’re looking for a thrilling water activity, one of the best ways to see the beauty of Catalina Island is from above. California Parasail offers 800-foot flights for 1, 2, and 3 people.

Note: Another very popular water activity on Catalina is the island’s semi-submersible submarine and glass-bottom boat tours. However, many of these tours feed fish to get them to swim close to the boat. These regular feedings can actually be detrimental to the local fish population as it teaches them to not search for their own food. I personally don’t recommend any tour that interacts with wildlife in a way that negatively changes their natural behavior, which is why I don’t recommend these activities if you’re going to Catalina Island. And, in general, I find these tours to be overly touristy and not the best way to experience the local sea life in its natural habitat.

Relax on the Beach

Estimated time: 1-2 hours

relax on the beach - middle beach on Santa Catalina

Even though there are a lot of adventure activities you can do, it’s good to give yourself at least an hour or two to just relax on Catalina island’s beautiful beaches as well.

One of the best places to go where you can also grab a cocktail to sip out on the beach is Descanso Beach Club .

Located just past the casino, this private beach costs $2 for beach access but is the nicest beach within walking distance to downtown Avalon.

You can also rent private cabanas at Descanso if you’re with a group or choose to simply enjoy the sand with a beach towel. It’s the perfect place to relax and grab a drink or bite to eat in the off-season or during the week.

During the high season, it turns into a party beach with rotating DJs on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, so don’t expect a peaceful beach setting if you’re visiting the island on a summer weekend.

You can also rent kayaks , standup paddleboards, and sign up for the zip lining tour , rope course , and rock climbing wall at Descanso Beach if you want to fit multiple activities into one area.

If you’re not a fan of paying for beach access, you can also lay out on the small beach near the ferry dock, called Middle Beach (although it doesn’t have quite the same ambiance).

Eat Fresh Lobster Rolls

Estimated time: 45 minutes – 1 hour

grab some fresh seafood before you head back on the Catalina Express

Santa Catalina Island isn’t exactly known for its foodie scene, but it’s still surrounded by the ocean so if you’re a fan of seafood you should make time to grab some delicious lobster rolls before you get back on the ferry.

I went to the Lobster Trap while I was in town and although the service could’ve been friendlier, their lobster rolls were a great way to end my time on Catalina Island before making my way back to the mainland.

Optional Addition: Go on a Local Tour

Estimated Time: 1-3 hours

tours on catalina island

If you get through everything on this Catalina Island itinerary, you probably won’t have time to do a guided tour on the island as well.

However, if you choose to extend your time or want to switch out one of the above activities with a tour, there are plenty of options on the island. Here are some of the best tours on Catalina Island:

  • Catalina Casino Tour – One of the most popular tours on Catalina Island is a walking tour through the historic art deco casino. There are two tours you can take: Discover the Casino Tour and Catalina Casino Behind the Scenes Tour . The 45-minute Discover the Casino Tour is the perfect intro to the history of the Casino and it allows you to tour the main highlights, including Avalon Theatre. The 90-minute Behind the Scenes Tour goes into more detail and focuses on areas of the casino that were once closed to the public for over 70 years.
  • Jeep Tours – If you’re looking to explore more of the island than what your golf cart can handle, I’d recommend hopping on a two-hour jeep tour. This eco-friendly tour with Catalina Island Company gives you a good overview of the local wildlife around the island and even some bison spotting.
  • Zip Lining Tour – As mentioned above, there’s a zip lining tour you can sign up for at Descanso Beach. If you’re looking for some thrills, this is an easy experience to fit into your time at the beach if you have a couple of hours to spare. On the tour, you’re taken 600 feet above the beach where you’ll fly across the canyon and through some eucalyptus trees at around 35 MPH. Along the zip line course, you’ll enjoy some scenic ocean views and learn more about the flora and fauna that can be found on Catalina Island. And, if you’re looking for more activities, there’s also a rock climbing wall and ropes course at Descanso Beach.
  • Ghost Tours – If you’re staying overnight, looking for a quirky tour, and you enjoy ghost stories, doing a Haunted Catalina ghost tour can be a fun way to spend an hour. Tours start at 7 pm nightly from the base of the Green Pier in downtown Avalon.

Quick History of Catalina Island

Santa Catalina Island’s history goes back to 8,000 years when Indigenous people from the Gabrieliño/Tongva tribe first inhabited the island.

Over the years, it’s been visited by smugglers, pirates, the Union army, missionaries, celebrities, and, of course, travelers.

For a good chunk of the 19th century, the island was owned by James Lick, a real estate investor and at one point the wealthiest man in California.

He eventually sold the island to the Banning Brothers, who started the Santa Catalina Island Company in the 1890s and turned the island into the resort destination it is today.

In the early 1900s, William Wrigley Jr., who had a controlling interest in the Santa Catalina Island Company, started developing the island even more into a resort destination.

He was the one who built the Catalina Casino and he even made Avalon the Spring Training home for the Chicago Cubs until 1951. His descendants still own most of the Santa Catalina Island Company today.

For a short stint during World War II, the island closed down to the public so it could be used as a military training facility. After the war, tourism picked up again and it became a popular vacation spot for celebrities, especially from the 1930s to 1950s.

Catalina Island was and still is a popular place to shoot movies (over 500 films, tv shows, and commercials have been shot in the area).

Best Time to Visit Catalina Island

The best time of year to explore Catalina Island is spring and fall. You’ll find the best weather during this time of the year and slightly fewer crowds than you will in summer.

Summer can be a good time to visit as well, but the weather is often overcast in the mornings with the sun not breaking through until the afternoon.

Winter is the worst time to visit with choppy waters that make water activities hard to do and the ferry ride to and from the island unpleasant.

However, if you’re looking for fewer crowds and care more about land activities, winter can be a good alternative to the busier months.

Just note that winter brings reduced ferry times so there’s less wiggle room for a day trip (although it’s still very much possible).

Tips for Visiting Catalina Island

  • Catalina Island isn’t the cheapest – As you can probably tell with the ferry price alone, a visit to Catalina Island isn’t always the cheapest. Transportation (including the ferry and golf cart rentals), food, and accommodation (if you’re planning a weekend trip), all come at a premium price. Make sure to budget accordingly and know that you’ll probably have to spend at least $200-$300 for a day trip to Catalina.
  • Keep track of ferry times – This is especially the case if you’re visiting in the low season when there are only 1-2 departures and returns per day. Make sure you’re keeping track of the time and that you can actually fit everything in without needing to rush back to the ferry if you’re only doing a day trip.
  • Pack water shoes – If you plan to do water activities, don’t forget a pair of water shoes. Although there are some soft sandy beaches, a lot of the shoreline around Catalina Island can be rocky and uncomfortable to walk around with bare feet.
  • Try a Buffalo Milk cocktail – You can’t make a visit to Catalina Island without trying its signature drink! This creamy cocktail is made with vodka, Kahlua, Creme de Cocoa, Cream de Banana, and half and half. You should be able to find it at any bar on Catalina Island, but a good place to start is either Descanso Beach Club or Luau Larry’s. It’s basically like ice cream in cocktail form.

day trip to santa catalina island

Going on a Catalina Island day trip is one of the most unique and fun things you can do when visiting Southern California . Whether you want a break from exploring the urban landscapes of Los Angeles or want a change of scene from the beaches of Orange County, Santa Catalina Island has a lot to offer visitors and it surprisingly quick and easy to reach from numerous ports in either area.

Catalina is a nature and water lover’s paradise and really has something for everyone — from a charming main town to epic outdoor activities to fun, family-friendly outings.

From beautiful scenery, unique architecture, fascinating ecosystems and crystal-clear water, Catalina makes for an excellent day trip destination and one that you soon won’t forget!

Table of Contents

How to Get to Catalina Island

Catalina, being an island, is really only accessible by ferry (unless you’re willing to shed the cash for a helicopter ride to the island). There are four different ferries leaving from various ports in LA and Orange County, and the journeys vary in time and frequency.

Los Angeles to Catalina

If you are in LA, the easiest way to get to Catalina is to sail from Long Beach or San Pedro, both located in LA County.

Ferry from Long Beach

Long Beach is a town located in the south of Los Angeles County and makes for the busiest port for sailing to Catalina Island. The ferry from Long Beach, operated by Catalina Express , leaves multiple times per day and has services directly to Avalon — the main town on the island.

It is recommended to arrive at the ferry terminal at least 30 minutes before the journey to ensure that you have time to park, to purchase tickets (if you haven’t already done so online) and to board the boat.

The journey takes about an hour from start to finish.

Ferry from San Pedro

The ferry to Catalina from San Pedro is operated by the same company that operates the Long Beach Ferry — Catalina Express .

Again, there are a few sailings per day between San Pedro and Avalon and the San Pedro port also has sailings to the other “city” on the island, Two Harbors, so leaving from this port is a good option if you would like to explore the area outside of Avalon.

Like the ferry from Long Beach, expect sailing time to take about an hour port-to-port and try to be at the ferry terminal at least 30 minutes before your expected departure times.

Avalon Bay from the hills on Catalina Island

Organised Tour from Los Angeles

If you would prefer to discover Catalina as part of an organised tour rather than independently, then this tour leaving from LA & North Orange County is a great choice for you.

They will pick you up from your hotel and organise everything for you, ensuring that all you have to do on your day trip to Catalina is have fun!

Alternatively, this tour leaving from Anaheim is a great option. It also includes hotel pick-up and transport.

There are countless optional add-ons (including a number of the activities we have listed in this article) and you can enjoy all of the highlights of the destination with none of the stress of planning!

Orange County to Catalina

If you’re staying in Orange County and want to visit Catalina Island from this area, then there are a couple of options available for you here, as well.

Ferry from Dana Point

Dana Point is a town in South Orange County that is perhaps best known for being the starting point of the iconic Pacific Coast Highway . Leaving from the iconic Dana Point Harbor (which is also filled with a lot of cool shops and great restaurants!), this ferry is also operated by the Catalina Express company.

Like the other ferry sailings, it is important to arrive in enough advance time to board your boat — parking can be a bit of a nightmare at Dana Point Harbor depending on the time of day and season you’re visiting in. The journey to Catalina will take about an hour and a half and the ferry only sails to Avalon.

Ferry from Newport Beach

And our final option for ferries to Catalina leaves from Newport Beach in north Orange County. Operated by Catalina Flyer , this ferry departs from Newport Beach harbour and sails multiple times per day.

The ferry company asks that passengers arrive at the terminal an hour before departing and the journey takes about an hour and fifteen minutes.

Avalon Harbour

San Diego to Catalina

If you’re thinking of going on a day trip to Catalina Island from San Diego, please note that you are going to be in for a very long day and it’s not entirely advisable. The closest ferry port to downtown San Diego would be in Dana Point, which is about a 90-minute drive without traffic — and it’s southern California, so you should expect there to be traffic.

Couple the drive with the fact that you will likely need to be at the ferry terminal at least 30 minutes before departure and that the ferry will take a further 90 minutes to reach Avalon, then you’re looking at spending at least six hours in transit for a simple day trip.

If you’re set on visiting Catalina from San Diego rather than LA, it is far more advisable to plan an overnight trip there to ensure that you’re able to actually have fun and not be rushed.

Things to do on a Catalina Day Trip

Now that we’ve discussed all of the ferry options for getting to the island, now it’s time to discuss what to do on Catalina Island for a day! Whether you’re looking for adventure or to simply relax in a delightful vacation destination, you’re sure to fall in love.

Explore Downtown Avalon

As the only officially incorporated town on Catalina Island, Avalon is a must-visit on the island and it is absolutely charming. Boasting classic seaside charms, a wonderful promenade, great shops, and fantastic restaurants, Avalon has a lot to offer visitors.

Make sure to take in the iconic Catalina Casino and enjoy the views of the boats moored in the harbour. There is also a great seaside promenade that you can stroll down, taking the time to pop into various shops and support the local economy!

If you want to venture a little bit outside of the city centre, then make sure to visit the Wrigley Memorial and Botanic Garden (operated by Catalina Island Conservancy) for a pleasant stroll through well-kept gardens full of endemic plants.

And if you want to learn more about Avalon’s history and top sites, consider going on this one-hour tour to give you a more holistic view of Catalina’s capital! There is also this private golf cart tour around the town or, if you want to go independently, you could opt to rent a golf cart yourself. You could also find a food tour to explore the local culinary scene and sample a bit of fresh seafood.

Wrigley Memorial & Botanical Gardens

Tour the Iconic Casino

There is no way that taking the time to explore Catalina would be complete without visiting the iconic and famous Catalina Casino — easily the most memorable building on the island and, at one point, the tallest building in California!

Constructed in 1928 and commissioned by chewing gum magnate William Wrigley, Jr, the Catalina Casino is a beautiful art deco-style building overlooking Avalon Bay. Contrary to what the name may suggest, there has actually never been any sort of gambling facilities here, either, and instead uses the term “casino” from the literal Italian meaning of a “gathering place.”

Today, the building is home to a swanky cinema where you can see a new release and a beautiful ballroom that hosts events from time to time. If you’d like to learn more about the history of this iconic building, consider taking this tour that will bring you behind the scenes of the Catalina Casino.

The historic Avalon Casino

Go on a Semi Submarine

Though the island itself has a lot to offer, one of the main draws for anyone going on a one-day trip to Catalina Island would have to be the incredible aquatic activities that one can embark on. Catalina boasts a fascinating and unique underwater ecosystem with countless different species living and thriving in vast kelp forests.

If you want to have a glimpse of what lies below the surface of the crystal clear waters of Catalina without having to get too wet, then consider going for a boat tour on a semi-submersible!

These half-submerged, glass-bottom boats have windows that are perfect for peering at the bright orange Garibaldi fish and looking into the depths of kelp forests without having to don a snorkel or get a SCUBA certification.

If you’re keen to see this side of Catalina, consider taking this semi-submarine tour (also available from GetYourGuide here ) and prepare to be amazed at the world under the sea.

Search for Wild Bison

Catalina not only boats fascinating wildlife below the ocean’s surface — in fact, the wildlife above ground is just as fascinating. And one of the unique things about Catalina is that it is home to its own wild bison herd, which have lived on the island since they were imported there in 1924.

Though at one point the herd had over 600 bison, there are now about 150 bison that make up the herd. The Catalina Island bison are also not completely purebred bison, and they are believed to be a cross between the American Bison and a domestic cow.

You can spot these fascinating creatures on a jeep tour, where you can also get off-road and see just how beautiful the landscape of rural Catalina really is — an unmissable experience when you visit Catalina Island!

Snorkel or SCUBA Dive in the Kelp Forests

As mentioned earlier, something that should be included on any Catalina Island itinerary is exploring the incredible underwater ecosystems that reside off the shores of the island.

And one of the best ways to take in the sea life is by snorkelling or SCUBA diving in the gorgeous kelp forests.

Catalina is one of the best hotspots for SCUBA divers in southern California and is actually considered to be one of the best places to go diving in the entire world. The water around the island is exceptionally clear, meaning that the visibility that you can get in the kelp forest is second to none.

The unique ecosystem that you will experience either SCUBA diving or snorkelling through these kelp forests is really something truly exceptional.

A Garibaldi Fish in the waters of Catalina Island

Try Kayaking or Stand-up Paddleboarding

If you’re not too keen to see what lies below the ocean’s surface on your Catalina Island day trip itinerary but still want to get out on the water, then consider trying your hand at kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding!

This is truly an oasis to try out these fun sports as there are countless other people doing exactly the same thing — meaning that it is a safe and secure location to do it!

On a kayak or paddleboard, you can get to some remote coves and areas that are hard to reach or see and you can really feel one with the water and nature surrounding.

Keep an eye out for wildlife while you’re paddling along and maybe even consider taking some snorkel gear with you so you can hop in the water and see what lies beneath you!

Go Ziplining

If you’re after an adrenaline rush when visiting Catalina that also will provide incredible 360-degree views of the island and the surrounding Pacific Ocean, then consider taking the leap and going ziplining!

The Catalina Island Zip Line Eco Tour is a collection of five different zip lines that can reach up to 600 feet above sea level, go up to 35 mph, and provide you with absolutely stunning and amazing views over the entire island — along with a pretty hefty adrenaline rush!

So if you’re a bit of a daredevil and want to add quite a bit of excitement to your trip to Catalina, then please consider viewing the beautiful island from this heart-pounding zip line! After getting your adrenaline pumping, consider unwinding with a cocktail at the nearby Descanso Beach Club.

If you would rather explore the inland delights of Catalina on foot while on your day trip, then consider hitting one of the many trails on the island and going for a hike. Hiking opportunities are plentiful on the island and there is something for all types of fitness and skill levels.

Some of the most popular hiking trails include the Garden to Sky summit, which begins in the botanic garden, or the Trans Catalina trail, which can take you across the entire island if you’re willing to take the time to walk the whole thing.

Catalina Island view

Lounge on the Beach

If your plan for your day trip involves relaxation rather than adrenaline, you’ll find that the island doesn’t disappoint in this regard, either! There are countless lovely beaches that you can lounge on with varying degrees of busyness and popularity.

The most popular beach on the island is undoubtedly Descanso Beach, which is located just past the Casino on the other side of Avalon. There are also a few other beaches around Avalon that are worth visiting, including South Beach, Middle Beach and Step Beach.

If you’re in the Two Harbors area, there are plenty of beaches here that are absolutely wonderful, as well. Harbor Sands has a number of facilities, however, there is also a great beach in front of the Two Harbors Campground.

No matter where you find a good strip of sand to lay out your towel, you’re sure not to be disappointed in the quality of beaches on Catalina Island!

Where to Stay on Catalina Island

If you’re planning more of a Catalina Island weekend trip (as you can see, there are so many things to do that it’s impossible to cram them into the span of just one day!), then you’re going to need to find a great place to stay. If you’re wondering where to rest your head in Catalina, check out these options:

Catalina Island Seacrest Inn – If you’re looking for a comfortable and well-equipped mid-range hotel, then this is a great option for you! They have a range of clean and cosy rooms available and a convenient location in the heart of Avalon!

How long do I need to stay to see the island rather well and to take in all the sights at a leisurly pace?

It’s really up to you and how much time, but I would recommend at least a few days if you want to truly explore the island 🙂

Planning a trip mid June with my husband and 95 year old Father-in-Law with all consideration he does get around pretty good but we don’t want to wear him out either, so do you think the Golf Cart would be sufficient for him or we were considering renting a power chair for him for this outing. Both my husband and he have been to Catalina Island before but it has been over 30 years. This would be a first for me.

Hi there! What would you recommend taking for a day trip? Is there a place on the island to store things while there?

Hi AnnMarie, I don’t think you need to take anything special with you for just a day except for a swimsuit if you plan do any water activities! You can find lockers to store your things on the island.

How far is from Ferry to the Casino?

Hi Gala, the Casino is about a 15-minute walk from the ferry terminal – less than a mile all along Avalon Bay.n

Thank you Maggie, is it active casino or just museum?

There has actually never been any gambling at the Avalon Casino (“casino” is simply the Italian word for “gathering place”). Currently, it operates as a cinema and an event space.

My parents took me to Avalon 75 years ago and I have been bring my boat there as a teen and adult. I no longer live in California but love to see the pictures and hear about whats going on at the island

Happy you enjoyed the article, Tom!

Been there twice, went parasailing for the first time out there. The casino is a fantastic place to visit. This comes from a person from Appleton Wisconsin, highly recommended to go and visit.

Thanks for your comment, Patrick! Glad you enjoyed your time in Catalina 🙂

How do you get around once you arrive on the island? Would you recommend renting a car?

The best way to get around is by golf cart! There are several places to rent them once you get to the island 🙂

I’ve grew up in Los Angeles and somehow I’ve never been to Catalina Island! This definitely makes me want to go. That casino is gorgeous and those turquoise waters are to die for. That’s definitely hard to come by at most LA beaches. Thanks for sharing.

Hope you get to visit sometime, Alanna! It’s really lovely 🙂

A Perfect Catalina Island Day Trip – the Complete Guide

Catalina Island day trip - a complete guide

Are you planning a day trip to Catalina Island? Then continue reading! I’ll share everything you need to know to create your perfect Catalina Island day trip .

Santa Catalina Island, which is generally referred to simply as Catalina Island, is located about 30 miles off the coast of California’s mainland. It is one of California’s most underrated, hidden gems.

With a population of just over 4200 people and around 22 miles (35 km) in length, this tiny Californian island makes for an amazing, fun-filled day trip.

On one of my most recent excursions to Mexico , I got the chance to stop in Catalina Island and was blown away by its breathtaking beauty, which quickly turned Catalina into one of my all-time favorite travel destinations.

In this guide, I will go over all of the best insider tips on how to have a successful Catalina Island day trip.

And now, without further ado, here is my ultimate guide to the perfect day trip to Catalina Island.

How to Get to Catalina Island

There are two different options to choose from to get from the mainland to Catalina Island: by sea or by air.

The most common way to get to Catalina Island for the day is by taking a ferry. There are 4 different ports to travel out of; San Pedro, Long Beach, Newport Beach, or Dana Point. The ferry rides are operated by two companies: Catalina Express and Catalina Flyer and take about an hour.

The next option will have you in Catalina in just about 15 minutes and that is by helicopter with IEX Helicopters. You can catch a helicopter ride from San Pedro, Long Beach, John Wayne Airport, and Burbank Airport.

While the ferry usually costs about $80 for a round trip (discounts available for seniors and children), it is by far the most cost-effective way for your Catalina Island day trip. A helicopter ride starts at $179 per person for a one-way flight.

Tip: Catalina Island makes a perfect day trip from both Los Angeles and San Diego

Things to Do During Your Catalina Island Day Trip

While the idea of spending only a day in such a beautiful place like Catalina might not sound like a long time, the good thing is that it is actually the perfect amount of time to explore the famous, yet small island .

Here are all the must-do’s for your day trip to Catalina Island.

1. Rent a Golf Cart

Whatever you do, one does not visit Catalina Island without renting a golf cart and driving around the island to take in all the beautiful views that the island offers.

In downtown Catalina, you’ll find several golf cart rental companies that will let you rent carts by the hour. Along with a golf cart, you will be given a map of the island and sent on your way to let your wanderlust run wild.

We rented our golf cart for 2 hours, but 1 hour ended up being more than enough time to drive around and discover the island.

Tip: if you really want to see all the best places on the island then this private golf cart tour is a great option.

2. Walk Around Downtown

Exploring downtown on a day trip to Catalina Island

Avalon is the main town on Catalina Island, and that is where you find downtown Catalina.

Filled with delicious restaurants, shopping boutiques, and some fun nightlife, downtown Catalina is the perfect way to unwind and spend your day.

Whether you’re in a shopping mood or would like to enjoy a seaside cocktail, this quaint neighborhood is the perfect place to hang out and relax.

While you can easily get through all of downtown within 30 minutes, it’s perfect because it leaves time for the rest of the activities you can do during your Catalina Island day trip.

3. Go Snorkeling

things to do on a one day trip to Catalina Island

If there is an activity that I can’t recommend enough it’s to go snorkeling in the crystal clear waters of the island. With an abundance of different snorkeling locations, there is absolutely no better way to spend your day in Catalina.

Snorkeling is one of my favorite activities in the world, so it’s needless to say that whenever I am anywhere near water, I try to fit some snorkel time into my itinerary.

While I have been snorkeling more times than I can count, in more places than I can count, Catalina blew me away with its out-of-this-world snorkeling spots . With hundreds of fish swimming around you, this is the perfect activity for your day in Catalina.

4. Take an Underwater Cruise

Looking to catch a glimpse of the underwater life but don’t want to get wet? there is this cool semi-submarine called Nautilus .

They offer trips that last 45 minutes and take you to a marine sanctuary to see the fish from your own porthole. Especially if you are visiting Catalina Island with kids, this is a great activity!

You’ll be taken through Lover’s Cove, a State Marine Conservation Area sanctuary where you’ll see amazing undersea gardens and ocean habitats in a semi-submersible vessel designed after America’s first nuclear-powered submarine, the USS Nautilus.

5. Zipline Across the Island

What better way to view Catalina than from 300 feet above the ground ?

While this activity might not be for the weak-hearted, it is definitely worth it and probably one of the most exhilarating things to do in Catalina Island.

Catch views like no other, all while getting a good adrenaline rush by zip-lining through the island. There truly is not a more liberating feeling than traveling through the air at high speeds while basking in the beauty that Catalina offers.

Tip: if this zipline sounds a bit too much for you, check out this activity . It gets you to climb bridges, ladders, and other challenging obstacles suspended in a grove of towering eucalyptus. Great to do with kids as well!

6. Lay Out on the Beach

One day in Catalina Island - enjoy the beach

If you’re looking to just take it easy during your Catalina Island day trip, there is nothing wrong with just grabbing a cocktail, laying out on the beach, and enjoying the sunshine.

And to be quite honest, you can never go wrong with a beach day. The main beach at Catalina is breathtaking and it’s the perfect way to unwind during your vacation.

7. Kayak Through the Waters of the Island

Another famous activity in Catalina is kayaking. Rent a kayak for a few hours and go out into the water for a fun day at sea.

Kayaking is the perfect way to explore the beauty of the island as you get to spend time with the hundreds of fish that will be swimming around you. And with crystal clear waters, it will be easy to spot all the different types of fish in the waters of the island.

Tip: Looking for more of an adrenaline rush? There’s a parasailing company in Avalon as well. So instead of admiring Catalina’s beautiful coastline from a kayak, you could also do so from the air!

8. Enjoy the Good Food

Santa Catalina Island is known for its good seafood restaurants. The Lobster Trap is a favorite, but there are many options around Avalon.

Stop by Catalina Coffee & Cookie for a cup of coffee and a delicious sweet treat (including vegan options).

If you’re looking for the best homemade ice cream, go to Scoops.

And check out Descanso Beach Club if you want to enjoy a cocktail and some food by the beach.

The Perfect Catalina Island Day Trip

Although small, Catalina is filled with so many fun activities for anyone who visits the island. From the beautiful surroundings to the locals who so warmly welcome you in, the food, and the ocean.

Go to Catalina Island in the fall. It will be warm, the air is crystal clear, and the water is as warm as it gets in SoCal.

Very informative and interesting Thank you

Hi William, Even though it’s getting a bit cooler, I’d still say Catalina Island makes a perfect day trip. And it will be a lot less crowded than in summer! Otherwise a visit to Temecula for some wine tasting is great. Or a day trip to San Diego.

The perfect catalina island day trip: 8 great things to do.

Santa Catalina Island (aka Catalina Island) is a little paradise just 28 miles from the city of Los Angeles. Many people agree that it’s a hidden gem in California that everyone should visit at least once.

The entire island has a population of just 4,100 people. It’s so small that you could drive around the town in 25 to 30 minutes because all you’d need to cover is 24 miles. While it’s not the kind of place you travel to for an extended vacation, it’s an excellent place for a fun-filled day trip.

catalina island

Catalina Island is known for activities such as scuba diving, wildlife excursions, charming shops, and tons of hiking possibilities. Each of these activities allows you to see the island’s natural wonders and gives you a day trip experience you will never forget.

How to Reach Catalina Island

The most popular way to get to Catalina Island is by ferry. You can catch the Catalina Express ferry to the island from three ports: San Pedro, Long Beach and Dana Point. There are up to 30 departures per day and it only takes on hour to reach the island. They run year round. Or you can get the Catalina Flyer from Newport Beach to Avalon.

From Los Angeles, you can head to any of the first three ports. Long Beach and San Pedro are both about 25 miles from central LA. Dana Point is an hour drive south from LAX.

Another way to reach the island is by plane, but that’s obviously quite a bit more expensive. Helicopter service is available from Long Beach and San Pedro to Avalon. You can also charter a private plane to land on the island.

Avalon Bay

Catalina Island One-Day Itinerary

There are a lot of activities and you only have one day to do them all. Here is our suggested one-day Catalina Island itinerary.

EXPERT TIP: Get an early ferry! There’s one leaving at 6:00am from Long Beach and on the weekends there’s one leaving at 8:15am. The ferry is one hour, so leaving this early will give you a good start to your day. You can pack a lot more in this way. If you don’t want to go on a hike, you can take the later ferry at 9:50am and still get a lot done.

  • Go on a hike. We recommend the Garden-to Sky Trail Hike. 1 hour
  • Rent a golf cart for an island tour. 2 hours
  • Take the walk on the Avalon Trail to Casino Point. 1 hour
  • Hang out on the beach
  • Go ziplining
  • Go on a boat cruise at Descanso Beach.
  • Go to happy hour at Descanso Beach Club. 1 hour
  • Have a nice dinner. (2 hours)

Things to Do On Your Catalina Island Day Trip

Because Catalina Island is such a small place, a one-day trip is more than enough to see what it offers so you can decide if you want to return. There are also lots of great campgrounds and hotels if you want to make an overnight of it. Below are some great activities you can try.

1. Go on a Hike

Garden to Sky Trail

When you visit Catalina Island, one of the best ways to get acquainted with its natural beauty is to hike its many trails . The hikes available on Catalina Island feature gorgeous views, wildlife and plant life, and fascinating history about the island and its people over the centuries.

Some of the most popular hiking spots in California can be found on Catalina Island. There are dozens of hikes for all levels, from easy to difficult, and short to long. Please be aware that these hikes may be dangerous for the unprepared, so be sure to pack the appropriate provisions, plenty of water, and take all necessary precautions.

  • Garden to Sea Trail – This hike is a great one for day trippers. It’s an easy to moderate 2.8-mile loop trail that’s well maintained and well marked. The trail is all uphill until you reach the summit where you’ll have fantastic views over both sides of the island.
  • Little Harbor Trail – Little Harbor Trail is a 7-mile hike one way to Two Harbors, taking about 5 hours to complete. The Little Harbor Trail begins at the campground and follows Little Harbor Road or Banning House Road all the way to Two Harbors.
  • Two Harbors Lion Head Loop: 4.9 miles; 3 hours. This hike goes north to Lion Head and Camp Emerald Bay before bearing west and back down to Two Harbors. (Moderate)

2. Rent A Golf Cart

golf cart on the path

Unlike other islands that rent motorbikes so tourists can get around, Catalina is famous for its golf carts. It’s the best way to catch all the sites you plan to visit without worrying about hiring a driver. This is how the locals get around the island, since cars are not allowed.

The best golf cart rental shops are downtown; you must pay by the hour to use them. Each golf cart has a map of the entire island, so you won’t get lost while viewing the gorgeous sights around you.

If you’re wondering how long to take the golf cart, we suggest two hours because that’s enough to take a tour around the island and get some great pictures. The rest of your trip can be done on foot or by bus.

You can also hire a guide if you prefer to have someone take you by the hand and take you to all the best spots.

3. Walk Around Town

Avalon Bay

Heading to the downtown area of either Avalon or or Two Harbors. We like Avalon best if you want to explore the island on foot. It’s the cultural center of the island and bigger than Two Harbors.

Upon arriving and beginning your walk, you will see many restaurants, clothing shops, and an area where you can enjoy the night scene after the sunset. Walking around is a great way to relax and learn where everything is.

You might want to start with a walk to the Casino. The Avalon Bay Trail is a walk that’s just under a mile and will take about 20 minutes to complete. The walk takes you along Avalon Bay with great water views, over to Casino Point, where you can eat lunch, do a little shopping, or rent kayaks and paddle boards and get out on the water.

4. Try Snorkeling

If you are a good swimmer, snorkeling is the best way to see first-hand how beautiful and transparent the water is near this island. Our favorite snorkeling spots are Lover’s Cove Marine Preserve, Casino Point Dive Park, and around Descanso Beach.

The easiest way to get in on this activity is to find a dive shop that has guided snorkeling tours or rents snorkeling gear. This guided tour is 2 hours and leaves from Casino Point. At Descanso Beach you can rent gear from Catalina Island Expeditions .

5. Embark On An Underwater Cruise

underwater shot of fish

If you’d rather not go snorkeling, you can see some of the same underwater views that a snorkeler gets on a Catalina Island Underwater Expedition .

The company that runs this expedition is called Santa Catalina Island Company, and the tour length is 45 minutes to an hour. As you sit comfortably in a climate-controlled cabin on board a large boat, you’ll glide 5 feet below the surface in a semi-submerged boat to see a marine sanctuary and watch the fish swim from your porthole.

There’s live commentary on board as you float around, so you know exactly what you’re seeing, and how to get the best views.

6. Ziplining

ziplining

If you like a good adrenaline rush, you can see the beauty of Catalina Island from 300 feet high, feeling like a bird as you soar on the ziplines through the forest.

The Catalina Zipline Eco Tour , at Descanso Beach Club, is a 2-hour adventure with 5 zip lines to ride, at speeds approaching 35 mph. You’ll also learn about the island’s unique ecological history.

7. Happy Hour

beach drinks

We rarely go anywhere without doing some sort of food-related activity, be it a food tour, a bar crawl, or a cooking class. In Catalina Island there’s a happy hour tour that fits the bill. There are no current dates on their calendar, however, so you might just have to put together your own happy hour. That’s not difficult seeing how many places there are to go.

Many of the bars and restaurants in Avalon offer afternoon specials on drinks and sometimes food. Give these places a try (check their websites for hours):

  • Bluewater Avalon
  • Descanso Beach Club
  • Avalon Grille

8. Relax On The Beach

Descanso Beach

Avalon offers a number of great beaches within walking distance of the port, so you can fill your day with sand and sun, if you want to.

We’ve mentioned Descanso Beach a few times in this guide, and for good reason. There is a lot to do there, including a private beach with great swimming and lots of activities, like snorkeling, kayaking, and standup paddleboarding. There is a $2 fee to access Descanso Beach Club.

South Beach and Middle Beach are also good hangout spots, on either sides of the Pleasure Pier. There are lifeguards at both beaches during the summer, and they’re both within easy walking distance of restaurants and bars.

9. Have a Nice Dinner

Bluewater Avalon

The perfect thing to cap off your day trip to Catalina Island is a nice dinner on the waterfront. Yes, many of the places to eat in Avalon are touristy, but that’s what you went there for anyways. Just embrace it! You can find tiki cocktails, plenty of seafood, and a island vacation vibe to go with it.

Here are a few of the restaurants we recommend in Avalon.

  • Luau Larry’s : One of the most iconic casual spots in Avalon, Luau Larry’s has been around for decades and it’s right on the waterfront: location, location, location. Grab a tropical drink, put on a straw hat, and climb into one of their indoor cave booths.
  • Steve’s Steakhouse & Seafood: Lovely steak & seafood restaurant with seating overlooking the waterfront.
  • Bluewater Avalon: Great bistro with seafood and cocktails, plus a great view from the outdoor deck.

Where to Stay on Catalina Island

If you decide to stay over and do some of the additional activities you missed the first day, we can recommend these hotels in Avalon.

  • Aurora Hotel – 3.5-star hotel on the waterfront with a modern interior and some rooms with sea view balcony.
  • Pavilion Hotel – Just a block from the pier, this hotel is in the perfect location to enjoy your time in Avalon. They have a $40/pd/pr fee to enjoy the amenities, but you’ll get back credits for all kinds of services.

Despite being so small, Catalina Island has more than enough to do when you want to enjoy an island day trip. You will fall in love with the scenery and the laid-back locals who are always willing to help if you feel lost.

If you are considering staying on the island for more than one day, we recommend you try a one-day trip first to see if you like it enough to want to explore more. For most people, one day is all they need.

Perfect Catalina Island Day Trip (How to Spend One Day at Catalina)

View of Catalina Harbor from the Buena Vista Scenic Overlook off Wrigley Drive in Avalon Catalina

Looking to take a Catalina Island day trip? We’ve got you covered. Both of us have been to Catalina Island several times not only for a Catalina day trip but for overnight and multi-day stays too. We both are IN LOVE with Catalina and we think it’s one of California’s best-kept secrets (unless you’re a local, then you already know).

For the purposes of this guide, we are going to focus on Avalon, the charming 1 square mile town that feels like its stuck back in golden age of Hollywood as this was a haven for some of the biggest stars and where they would come to spend their free time 22 miles off the coast of California.

The other part of Catalina you can visit, but we must warn you there are much less things to do here, is Two Harbors. This is an even smaller town with about one restaurant and one store that’s more popular among those who are fortunate enough to have their own boat and come spend a day here.

For the regular visitors like us, you will want to spend a day trip to Catalina Island at Avalon which is one of the best day trips from Los Angeles , San Diego, or Orange County. And if you do have time to spare, see if our itinerary for a Catalina Island weekend trip will convince you to stay a few nights!

5 Fun Facts about Catalina Island

Drone view of Catalina Island in California

Marilyn Monroe was discovered by a photographer when she was working as a taffy puller at the candy shop downtown Avalon known as Lloyd’s of Avalon Confectionary when she was still Norma Jeane at the age of 16.

The Wrigley Family, the American chewing gum industrialists and owners of the Chicago Cubs baseball team bought Catalina Island in 1919. They brought the Chicago Cubs here for spring training, which also brought Ronald Reagan here as he was an announcer for the Cubs. The Wrigley family still helps preserve the island and has put in place protections to prevent over development.

Winston Churchill caught a record-breaking marlin on his visit to Catalina Island in 1929.

Catalina Island is also the location in the center of the mysterious death of actress Natalie Wood who died while aboard her husband Robert Wagner’s yacht. The only other people on board the yacht during her death were actor Christopher Walken and the captain of the boat in 1981.

The casino on the island, which was never actually a gambling hall and never will be, means gathering place and that’s exactly what it was on the island with a movie theater featuring the first motion picture with sound!

along the coastline of Catalina Island in California on a snorkeling excursion

Check out a snorkeling excursion on your day trip to Catalina Island so you can swim around in the turquoise waters next to the giant, orange Garibaldi fish that swim along the shores here! This trip is short enough to squeeze into a day trip with Catalina Diver’s Supply.

The tour takes you to the northern point of the island for our guided snorkeling adventure. What’s great about this is that this is available all year round because they provide wet suits for all seasons, snorkel masks, and fins.

Or you can rent snorkel gear from Wet Spot Rentals near the ferry terminal. This is a short walk over to Lover’s Cove Marine Preserve, which is one of the best snorkel spots on the island!

We both  own this snorkel set which includes a mask, snorkel, ear plugs, flippers, and carrying bags which is also an option if you want to snorkel all around the island. Some of the beaches are pebbly, so it might be nice to invest in a  pair of water shoes too to wear under your flippers or to swim around with! These also fit in the snorkel set bag we bought!

Rent A Golf Cart

Megan and Scott enjoying a scenic golf cart ride on Catalina Island in California

You only have one afternoon on your Catalina day trip, so one of the best ways to cover the most ground quickly and without working up a sweat is by renting a golf cart. Golf carts are the cars of the island, seriously you won’t see many actual cars on the island but everyone drives golf carts!

If you’re short on time or sick of walking this is the perfect way to explore the nooks and crannies of Avalon. You can rent golf carts by the hour at a few different spots in Avalon.

Another option is to rent e-bikes from Brown’s Bikes, which you can easily cruise around on the same roads as the golf carts.

You will want to do the Scenic Loop with either option for multiple viewpoints and vistas to stop at along with breathtaking views along the way through roads surrounded by Eucalyptus trees and endemic plants to the island.

Check out Inland

Megan enjoying the incredible views of Catalina island interior

Some of the most gorgeous scenery on the island can be found inland. The inland of the island is difficult to fit in on a day trip to Catalina Island unless you arrange a guided tour with one of the many different options for exploring the interior of the island ranging anywhere from as little as 45 minutes to 3.5 hours.

Unless you’re doing a multi-day trek along the Trans Catalina Trail which covers the length of the island, which if you’re doing a day trip isn’t possible, you’ll need to be a part of the tour because the other parts of the island often require off roading vehicles as golf carts aren’t allowed on the interior of the island as its dangerous. Not to mention a special pass that allows you onto the inland roads that are hard to get even for locals!

Two great options include the Eco-Tour from the Catalina Conservancy takes you on a scenic tour through Catalina’s inland.

The other is joining a customized tour with Catalina Backcountry who will customize your private experience and pick spots on the island according to the time you have and interests! We used this option on more than one occassion and got to do some island exploring including insane vantage points and secret beaches on the back of the island. This is our favorite tour on the island.

If you’re lucky you might even spot some of the bison that live on the island that were left over here from a movie that was filmed here decades ago, endemic fox species that are as small as a house cat, or bald eagles on your journey.

Check out the Viewpoints in Avalon

View of Catalina Harbor and Avalon from the scenic viewpoint

One of the easiest ways to enjoy the insane views on your day trip to Catalina Island is by walking up towards the Inn at Mount Ada on Wrigley Road, the mansion historically owned by the Wrigley family that is now the most fascinating place to stay on the island with views of Avalon and the ocean below its hilltop location.

On your way up to the Inn at Mount Ada you can take a left turn as you’re approaching the top and find a quiet bench with unbelievable views known as the Buena Vista Point Scenic Overlook (on Google Maps). From here you have sweeping views of the Catalina Harbor and Casino below.

Catalina Mini Golf

Mini Golf in Catalina Island

Another fun activity you can fit in easily on a Catalina Island day trip is enjoying their fun mini-golf course! This 18 hole course is tucked away in a garden in the center of town! There are some fun trick shot options here and there are even little signs around the course that educate you on random facts about the Island!

Dining on Catalina

Antonios Pizza Catalina

You’ll work up an appetite at some point on your Catalina day trip, lucky for you the food scene is INCREDIBLE here! If you can plan your day trip to be here for both lunch and dinner, we recommend that!

After several trips to the island, here are some of our favorite dining options!

Maggie’s Blue Rose –  offers incredible Mexican food and margaritas overlooking Avalon Bay from their outdoor seating or enjoy your meal inside where it feels like a cozy cantina. Save some space when you order because you will absolutely crush the homemade tortilla chips and salsa that comes out!

Descanso Beach Club – This is one of my favorite places to eat plus a perfect spot to grab lunch on your day trip to Catalina Island if you want to sit back and relax on the beach with drinks and food!

Antonio’s Pizza – Grab pizza by the slice, or the whole pie on Summer Ave. There are actually two locations too. This is best if you want to grab food to take and eat somewhere else!

Bluewater Avalon – This spot wins for location as its located right on the water with a great outdoor deck to enjoy delicious food and drinks. We loved the beer selection on tap and the fresh ceviche and chips.

Steve’s Steakhouse – If you find yourself sticking around on your day trip to Catalina Island until dinner, this is a great spot! Located just above Maggie’s Blue Rose it was fun to find out that both Steve and Maggie are married in real life! (Small island love!) This is the best spot for fine dining on the island. We recommend their coconut battered shrimp!

Catalina Coffee & Cookie Co., – Perfect for a sweet tooth or a cold drink! We recommend the raspberry white chocolate cookie, the dark chocolate pistachio bark, and the strawberry hibiscus tea!

Lobster Trap – A local’s favorite and top choice if you’re looking for today’s fresh catch of seafood or a seafood pasta dish in this nautical-themed restaurant.

Other Catalina Travel Tips

weekend getaway to Catalina Island in California a couple looks at the ocean with the Casino in the background

Here are a few essential tips for your Catalina Island day trip and itinerary including what to pack and a few useful resources for booking your on-island activities.

If you’re prone to motion sickness you’ll want to come prepared for the ferry ride to and from Catalina Island. The ferry service is very smooth, but on days with the high wind the ride is a little rocky and those who are prone to motion sickness may feel it the worst. Come prepared with things that settle the stomach like ginger ale or purchase ginger chews , Dramamine for motion sickness , or try a motion sickness patch .

Come prepared with sunscreen too! We recommend, especially if you’re planning on getting in the water, to purchase reef-safe and eco-friendly sunscreen as many brands contain harmful chemicals to the ocean that people don’t realize. Unfortunately, the ‘reef friendly’ sunscreen label isn’t regulated so you often get brands who are ‘greenwashing’ or pretending to be safe for the environment even though they are not – which makes things confusing for the consumer.

A few of our favorite reef-safe sunscreen products include:

  • Kokua Sunscreen  – water-resistant zinc sunscreen that applies smoothly without white residue
  • Sun Bum Mineral Sunscreen  – the Mineral line (white bottle with brown text that says ‘mineral’) is a clear, fast absorbing zinc-based sunscreen that’s great for sensitive skin and is sweat and water-resistant.
  • Thinksport Mineral Sunscreen  – We have been using this brand for years and love how easily it applies and is water resistant. They are also a bit more affordable.
  • Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen  – this sunscreen is not only reef-safe but it’s also super hydrating, this one is a little pricier so we recommend using this on the face and neck area since it falls under more of a skincare product as well.

There are plenty of small, charming boutiques on the island for any last-minute things you may have forgotten and even a full-on Vons grocery store too.

For booking on island activities, if you didn’t purchase in advance (which is highly advised for the summer season) there is still a chance you can book all kinds of island excursions from boat rides, submarine rides, snorkeling, island tours, Casino tours and more. If you want to try your chances of booking last minute you can at several spots around the island including the blue Pleasure Pier, the information and ticketing spot at the Catalina Island mini-golf, and directly at some attractions like the Casino.

If you’re visiting off-season like we did in March or April, chances are you’ll be able to book last-minute activities but keep in mind they don’t operate at their full schedule off-season, so it’s still recommended to book in advance.

And if you do decide to stay the night – which you should!! Check out our full guide to where to stay on Catalina Island including different accommodation options for every type of traveler.

Catalina Island Day Trip: Epic one day Itinerary (2024)

Affiliate Disclosure for Destination Checkoff

I am a California local, and I recently visited Catalina Island as a day trip from Long Beach, LA. I was blown away by how beautiful and postcard-perfect it is, especially the main Avalon area with the Catalina Casino building landmark.

Located just off the sun-kissed shores of Southern California, Catalina Island is so picturesque that you will feel transported to a coastal town in Italy.

We had so much fun on our day trip to Catalina Island. We rented a golf cart and drove along the island, taking in all the vista points and landmarks. We explored the cute boutique shops in Avalon and tried a few restaurants. The beaches and activities there are super fun, too!

With its stunning beaches, charming towns, and a host of outdoor activities, Catalina Island is a haven for adventurers, relaxation-seekers, and everyone in between.

Perfect Catalina Island Day Trip Itinerary

Catalina Island, or Santa Catalina Island, is only around 22 miles from the coast of Los Angeles. This gem of an island offers the perfect day trip, providing an escape from the mainland’s hustle and bustle.

Below is a perfectly planned Catalina Island day trip. Catalina Island is small, only about 76 square miles, and one day is just about enough to explore the top things to do on Catalina Island.

When you have more time, consider returning for a weekend on Catalina Island and enjoy the island life!

Let’s dive into our amazing Catalina Island one day itinerary!

Arrival at Catalina Island

You can reach Catalina Island by ferry or helicopter ride from Los Angeles or as part of a cruise stop. Taking a ferry from LA is the most common way to go to Catalina Island.

Ferry to Catalina Island

Catalina Island can be reached by a one-hour ferry from Los Angeles. You can catch the ferry from Long Beach, San Pedro, Newport Beach, or Dana Point. Long Beach is the most common port to catch a ferry to Catalina Island.

➡ Check ticket rates and availability for Catalina Express Round-Trip Ferry Service from Long Beach or San Pedro

We were staying in Long Beach and took the morning ferry from Long Beach to Catalina Island. The ferry ride is scenic and provides beautiful views of the Long Beach coastline and the Pacific Ocean.

By Air: You can also take a helicopter ride to reach Catalina Island. This is the quickest way to reach Catalina Island, as it is a short 15-minute ride from LA.

By Cruise: Many cruise ships going to Mexico stop at Catalina Island for a day. This is another way for tourists to arrive at Catalina Island. The day we visited, a cruise ship was docked at the island; hence the island was way more crowded than usual.

Avalon ferry terminal in Catalina Island

Most ferries arrive in Avalon , the island’s main town. As you disembark, you’ll be greeted by the charming Mediterranean-style architecture and the relaxed island atmosphere.

Welcome to Avalon Sign in Catalina Island

Avalon downtown and breakfast

As you disembark the ferry, you will be in the town of Avalon, with the most beautiful view of the Island in front of you.

The Catalina Casino Building, The Green Pier, the Avalon Bay with the boats, and the surrounding mountains paint a stunning picture you could marvel at for hours! I absolutely can!

Crescent Ave is the main Avalon downtown Street, lined with restaurants and stores, and is right next to the ferry terminal. You can walk everywhere in the Avalon downtown; it’s quite small.

Start your day with a delicious breakfast at one of the local cafes in Avalon. Pancake Cottage, Original Jacks County Kitchen, and The Naughty Fox are great breakfast restaurants in Avalon downtown.

Pancake Cottage at Catalina Island

After breakfast, take some time to just soak in the views, and if you are like me, click a crazy amount of pictures. I just couldn’t get enough of the iconic view of the Catalina Casino and Avalon Bay!

Morning activity: Explore the Island on a golf cart!

For your morning activity, I recommend taking a golf cart tour or renting a golf cart and exploring the island on your own.

Golf Carts on Catalina Island

Did you know that golf cart is Catalina Island’s primary transport mode? There are very few cars here and almost no rental cars, and you don’t need one.

A golf cart is the best way to see this small hilly island. If this is your first time, I suggest taking a private guided tour.

➡ Check rates and availability for this 2-hour highly rated Private Guided Golf Cart Tour of Avalon – best way to see Catalina Island!

You can also rent a golf cart from Catalina Island Golf Cart Rentals which is right next to the ferry building.

It took us some time waiting in line to get a golf cart. It was extremely busy the day we went due to the cruise ship’s arrival. But in summer, always expect some waiting to get a golf cart.

They have limited online reservations, but walk-in reservations are available. The golf carts are 4-seater or 6-seater.

Once you get your golf cart, they will also give you a map of the suggested loop route to explore the scenic vista points.

The entire route can be done in about an hour, but we booked the golf cart for 2 hours, considering the time needed for photos. The golf cart driving took a little getting used to, but it was fun.

Remember to hold on to the map they give you! We lost ours at half-way point and then had to figure out our way by asking for directions. There are a lot of one-way streets on Catalina Island, so be careful!

Below are some scenic vista points on the golf cart route. If you are taking a private golf cart tour, these will be covered for sure!

Lover’s Cove Scenic Viewpoint – Great stop near the main town with a small rocky beach. This is a great snorkeling spot as well.

3 Palms Scenic Overlook – Excellent viewpoint at an elevation and gives a bird eye view of Avalon. Really nice spot to capture photos with the famous view in the backdrop!

Views of Avalon Bay and Catalina Island from 3 Palms scenic overlook

Buena Vista Point Scenic Overlook – This was my favorite stop on the entire route! Walk down the steps and past an old gate to get to the scenic overlook which has the best views of Avalon downtown! I even saw a deer family here! Across the street is the Mt. Ada luxury hotel. You can also hike to this viewpoint from the downtown area. It is a 1-mile uphill hike.

View of Avalon town from Buena Vista Overlook

Wrigley Memorial and Botanic Garden – This detour takes around 30 minutes round trip to just reach the gate of the garden. As we had the golf cart for 2 hours, we drove to the garden. You will need more time if you plan to visit the garden.

Wrigley Memorial on Catalina Island

The garden features a historic Wrigley memorial tower and a variety of native plants, offering a tranquil escape with scenic views. You can also hike from the downtown area later to visit the botanical garden, but it is a long 3-mile hike one-way.

Catalina Chimes Tower – A historic landmark with stunning views of Avalon Bay from a different angle. The chimes can be heard every 15 minutes from the tower. The road leading to the Chimes Tower is a one-way road, so be careful of the route.

Chimes Tower on Catalina Island

Alternate Morning Activity: Adventure and Wildlife Tour

A large part of Catalina Island is protected, and visitors are not allowed to explore on their own. Taking a tour is the best way to explore the protected areas of Catalina and see wildlife like bison, deer, and even the Catalina Island fox.

➡ Check rates and availability for this 2-hour small group Inside Adventure Tour on Catalina Island and see some wildlife!

Lunch in Avalon downtown

After the golf cart adventure, you will be back in the main Avalon downtown area. The 2-hour golf cart excursion might have filled your heart with Catalina scenery and fueled your appetite!

Enjoy a relaxing lunch at one of the local restaurants or grab a picnic to enjoy by the beach. Fresh seafood is often a highlight of the island’s culinary offerings.

We ate at Antonio’s Pizzeria , which has good pizza and appetizers. They have patio seating by the water with epic views of Catalina Casino.

The Lobster Trap is a popular seafood restaurant and is open for both lunch and dinner. It gets busy at peak dinnertime. The lobster roll is recommended here.

Cafe Metropole is a great option for a lighter lunch, like sandwiches, wraps, smoothies, etc. Their sweet potato fries are amazing. Several options for vegetarians and vegans on their menu.

Afternoon: Water-based activity

In the morning, we explored the land part of Catalina Island. In the afternoon, try one of the water-based activities or tours offered here.

Take your pick from the Catalina Island water activities:

Semi-Submarine Tour – This is a great activity for families who are young for snorkeling. The kids will get excited to see fish come up to their submarine window.

Glass Bottom Boat Tour : Another great water activity for families and adults alike.

Kayaking / Paddle Boarding – Consider renting a kayak or paddleboard to explore the crystal-clear waters surrounding the island.

Snorkeling – Bring or rent snorkeling gear on the island and experience snorkeling. Lover’s Cove, to the right of the main downtown area, is a great spot for snorkeling. Snorkeling The marine life is diverse and colorful, making it a great opportunity for underwater exploration.

Time for an afternoon snack? Catalina Coffee & Cookie Co is great for coffee and delicious baked goods. Scoops Homemade Ice Cream has amazing ice cream and long lines! Well, it was a cruise ship day, so we had to wait in a lot of queues!

Late Afternoon: Beach Fun

Grab a snack and relax at the beach. Catalina Island has some of the best beaches in Los Angeles . The are two beaches in the main downtown area, Middle Beach and South Beach , one on either side of the Green Pier.

Beach on Catalina Island

Pick one that seems less crowded and soak in the sun. The water near the shores is shallow, and we saw a lot of kids playing in the gentle waves.

Another popular beach here is the Descanso Beach Club . This is a private beach where you can rent a chaise lounge or a cabana for the day. They typically range from $125 to$450 for the day with food and beverage service.

Descanso Beach Club on Catalina Island

The signature drink here is the Buffalo Milk drink, which is a blended cocktail made with vodka, cacao cream, ice cream, and nutmeg.

More things to do in Catalina Island (if you have time)

Catalina Casino Tour – You can take a guided Behind the Scenes Casino Tour of the iconic Catalina Casino and learn all about this century-old art deco landmark’s history. Visit the ballroom and the theatre as part of the tour.

path leading to Catalina Casino

Ziplining – Catalina Island Zip Line Eco Tour runs 2-hour ziplining adventures near Descanso Beach Club.

Catalina Aerial Adventure runs a rope course aerial adventure with beginner, intermediate, and difficult level adventure courses.

Hiking – There are several amazing hiking trails on Catalina Island, like the legendary Trans Catalina Trail, which is 38 miles long and a multi-day hike. This hike is too long for a day trip, but there are other shorter hikes, like the Garden to Sky Trail, which is around 3 miles round trip and starts at the Wrigley Memorial and Botanic Garden.

Two Harbors town – On another visit, you can check out the smaller Two Harbors town if you are interested in exploring more of Catalina Island. This smaller village is very rustic and laid back and not touristy. You wouldn’t find much to do in Two Harbors and probably only a couple of places to eat. Some people like Two Harbors as it is more rugged and relaxing. I would recommend exploring Avalon on your first visit to Catalina Island.

After chilling at the beach, grab some dinner if there is time before your ferry back to LA or before you head back to your cruise ship. Below are some great restaurants to try for dinner.

Restaurants on Catalina Island

Luau Larry’s – Restaurant with Hawaiian cuisine and theme and harbor views.

Steve’s Steakhouse and Seafood  – Great place for a steak and seafood dinner. Their second-floor seating has great views of Avalon Bay!

Bluewater Avalon is a waterfront seafood restaurant with great cocktails and a nice harbor view from the patio seating.

Make a note of your ferry’s or cruise ship’s boarding and departure ahead of time. We were in line 30 minutes before the boarding started.

Finally, it was time to say goodbye to the picturesque Catalina Island and head back to LA with beautiful memories of an incredible one day in Catalina Island!

Travel tips for Catalina Island

Below are travel tips that will help you plan your visit to Catalina Island for the day:

How to get to Catalina Island?

You can get to Catalina Island by taking a ferry from mainland ports like Long Beach, San Pedro, Dana Point, or Newport Beach. The ferry ride takes around 1 to 1.5 hours. We took a round trip ferry from Long Beach and it was a comfortable ride.

Alternatively, you can take a helicopter from Long Beach for a quicker but pricier option. The island has a small airport for those who prefer flying in.

How to get around Catalina Island?

Most attractions in the main town of Avalon are within walking distance, making it a convenient way to explore. Renting a golf cart is a popular option, allowing you to explore the island at your own pace and enjoy views from scenic vista points. We rented a golf cart for 2 hours to explore on our own.

Renting bicycles is an eco-friendly way to explore Avalon and the surrounding areas, but keep in mind that the roads can be uphill around Avalon to get to most viewpoints.

When is the best time to visit Catalina Island?

Catalina Island is a year-round destination but the best time to visit Catalina Island is during the spring (April to June) and fall (September to October) when the weather is pleasant and crowds are relatively smaller. These seasons offer ideal conditions for outdoor activities, exploring, and enjoying the island’s charm.

The summer months of July and August are great weather-wise, with long daylight hours, but it can be very crowded, and accommodation rates can be very high. Weekdays in summer can be relatively less crowded.

We visited on a Wednesday in June end, and it was crowded because a cruise ship had arrived that day. We still had a great time, so if summer is when you can go, you should still go.

Catalina Island can easily be explored as a day trip from LA, and staying in Los Angeles Long Beach area like we did is convenient to catch the ferry in the morning.

If you are planning to stay overnight on Catalina Island, there are some amazing hotels in Avalon to stay at. In fact, the ferry allows passengers to check in bags in case they are planning to stay on the Island.

Hotel Atwater is a boutique hotel near the harbor with a golf course. Walk to all the restaurants and attractions in downtown Avalon.

How to Plan the Perfect Day Trip to Catalina Island

Cat Harbor on Catalina Island

While it’s great to spend a full weekend or more exploring the island, Catalina makes for the perfect day trip from Los Angeles.

A little over 20 miles long, Catalina Island is big enough to offer a variety of activities and sights to see, but small enough to be able to visit for a day and still feel like you saw most everything that the island is known for, while still leaving a little room for excitement to return.

Casino for where to stay in Catalina blog

If you’re looking for a little guidance on planning your Catalina Island day trip, this post has everything you need to know! From the best way to get there, how to get around once you’re on the island, and suggestions for what to do in both Avalon and Two Harbors. If you’re hoping to make the most of a day trip to Catalina Island, then keep reading!

Quick Tips for Taking a Day Trip to Catalina Island

Sunset over Cat Harbor

  • Pick between spending time in Avalon or Two Harbors. Since the two towns are far enough apart, I wouldn’t recommend trying to squeeze both into a single day trip. For first timers, I would recommend Avalon as there’s much more to do and also more ferry options, so you’ll have a little more flexibility.
  • Consider the best time of year for you to go . Summer is the busiest season, so if you’re looking to avoid the crowds and squeeze more into a single day, I’d consider doing your Catalina day trip in the fall when the weather is beautiful (I think even nicer than in the summer honestly), but establishments aren’t quite as busy. Winter can be nice too, but the ferry doesn’t make as many trips during the day which gives you a little less flexibility for travel times, so plan accordingly.
  • Keep track of the ferry times. The last thing you want is to have to unexpectedly turn your day trip into an overnight trip. Keep an eye on the clock and make sure to arrive at the dock with plenty of time to catch your return ferry.
  • Don’t overbook yourself. If you’re only going for the day, you may be tempted to try to see as much of the island as possible, but I guarantee your Catalina Island day trip will be much more enjoyable if you aren’t rushing from one activity to the next.

Catalina Express arriving on Catalina Island

When embarking on a day trip to Catalina Island from Los Angeles, the Catalina Express ferry is going to be the easiest and most affordable option to get you there. The ferry takes about an hour and there are three different harbors you can depart from , including San Pedro , Dana Point , and Long Beach .

If you’re coming from the LA area, departing from San Pedro or Long Beach will be your best bet, but if you’re located south of Newport Beach, then leaving from Dana Point makes the most sense.

Before you book your tickets, you’ll want to have decided if you’ll be spending your day in Avalon or Two Harbors, so you can book the correct destination on your ferry ticket. The two towns are on opposite ends of the island, and travel between them can eat up quite a bit of time—not exactly ideal for a day trip—so you don’t want to end up on the wrong side!

If you’re going to the Avalon side of Catalina , you can depart from any of the three ports. However, if you’re going directly to Two Harbors, you’ll need to take the San Pedro route . You can expect to pay about $84 roundtrip for tickets on the Catalina Express. Check out their website for up-to-date information on fares and schedules and to book your ticket.

If Newport Beach is a convenient location for you to leave from, The Catalina Flyer is another ferry option to consider. It’s $78 roundtrip which is a little cheaper than the Catalina Express, but it only makes one trip a day from Newport Beach to Avalon, so you’ll want to be sure the times work for you. You can find out more detailed information on their website .

If you’ve got the funds and want to travel to Catalina in style, IEX Helicopters will get you from Long Beach to Catalina in under 15 minutes for about $300 per person.

How to Get Around Catalina

Map of Catalina Island

Golf carts are the preferred mode of transportation on Catalina, and they’re definitely the most efficient way to get around.

Do you really need a golf cart to get around Catalina?

The short answer is no. It’s not 100% necessary, especially if you’re planning on strolling downtown Avalon and relaxing on the beach all day. You can even make it to Descanso Beach Club and the ziplines on foot, though they’re a bit of a walk from the ferry.

I’d say, the best reason to have a golf cart is to drive along the upper roads along Catalina which give you the best overlooks and photography opportunities of the island. If you don’t care about that and you’re able bodied, you can probably skip it.

However, it is fun to rent them if only for a few hours to take in the views and just have some fun behind the wheel!

Where can you rent golf carts?

There are a few different golf cart rental companies in downtown Avalon to choose from. Catalina Island Golf Carts & Tours rents 4-passenger golf carts for $110 for 2 hours, and you should try to book at least 24 hours in advance. For bigger groups, 6-passenger golf carts are available on a first come first serve basis.

There’s also Island Rentals which is really close to the ferry terminal and they don’t accept reservations so you can just show up when you get there. They charge $55 an hour plus a $55 deposit (note that they only accept cash) so about the same as Catalina Island Golf Carts.

You’ll need a valid driver’s license in order to rent a golf cart anywhere on the island, but the minimum age of the driver varies from company to company. For Catalina Island Golf Carts, drivers are required to be 25, but for Island Rentals you only need to be 21. It’s worth double-checking the requirements before you go to make sure you don’t run into any last-minute issues.

What other transport options are there?

If walking on foot or freestyle golf cart exploring isn’t your thing, try this private guided golf cart tour so you don’t have to worry about it on your own.

What to Do on Your Catalina Island Day Trip

Two Harbors, Catalina Island

There is a lot to do on Catalina Island, so if you’ll only be there for one day, narrowing down your itinerary can be tough. I have a full post dedicated to what to do on Catalina Island that is much more detailed regarding what to do on the island, but here are some quick itinerary suggestions that will make your Catalina Island day trip super memorable!

What to do in Avalon

If you’ve never been to Catalina before, I highly recommend staying on the Avalon side of the island. Avalon is a much livelier and bigger area than Two Harbors (the other main town on the island) and there are a bunch of restaurants, shops, and activities for you to choose from. Plus, there are more ferry options going to and from Avalon, so you’ll have more flexibility with travel.

Parasailing on Catalina Island

Ideal Itinerary for 1 Day in Avalon:

  • Catch a morning ferry from Los Angeles to Avalon.
  • Rent a golf cart for a few hours and drive around the loop to all the scenic viewpoints (Buena Vista Point is my fave). Definitely bring your camera too! Catalina has no shortage of beautiful views.
  • Walk around the downtown area, grab lunch at Bluewater Grill and do a little shopping
  • Hit up Descanso Beach Club and enjoy this beautiful and upscale private stretch of sand with cabanas and cocktails that will transport you to the Mediterranean. Definitely try a buffalo milk cocktail while you’re there too. They’re delicious and the “Official Drink of Catalina Island.”
  • Book an afternoon activity, like a glass bottom boat tour, parasailing, scuba diving, or even sunset ziplining (this was super fun and just the right amount of adventurous for me). One of my favorite tour companies, Viator , has a ton of options to choose from or check out more tours here .
  • Hop the ferry back to LA!

What to do in Two Harbors

More remote than Avalon, Two Harbors is where you’ll want to go if doing all the typical touristy Catalina stuff isn’t too appealing to you. It’s definitely quieter and more peaceful on this side of the island, and the landscape is wild and rugged, which makes it beautiful to explore and popular for nature lovers.

What to do in Catalina - Hiking in Two Harbors, Catalina

Ideal Itinerary for 1 Day in Two Harbors:

  • Head out on the morning Catalina Express ferry from San Pedro to Two Harbors. Note that San Pedro is the only port that the Catalina Express offers service to Two Harbors from, and there are less departure times than there are if you were going to Avalon.
  • Go straight to Harbor Sands at Two Harbors to book your beachside lounge chair before they fill up. Spend some time relaxing in the sun while ordering food and drink from the Harbor Reef Restaurant .
  • Rent paddle boards from Two Harbors Dive & Recreation Center. They also rent kayaks, bikes, and snorkeling equipment here if that’s more up your alley.
  • Go for an afternoon hike. You can stop by the Two Harbors Visitor Center for suggestions on different hikes to take, but the Ballast Point Loop is a moderate (although mostly uphill) hike where you’ll get some really beautiful views of Two Harbors! The Cat Harbor Overlook Trail is also awesome.
  • Take the 6:30 PM ferry back to San Pedro—this is the last trip of the day, so don’t miss it!

13 Things to know for a one day trip to Catalina Island, California

22 miles off the coast of California lies Santa Catalina , one out of 8 islands that make up the Channel Islands . It’s well-loved for its quaint white sand harbor view beaches, wildlife, diving sites, and hiking and views from Mt. Orizaba, the island’s highest point which is 2,097 ft.

When I took a day trip to Catalina Island it was an impulsive last-minute decision, I didn’t know much about the island I just knew I wanted to visit after my interest had been peaked by a YouTube video I had seen in the past. There are quite a few things I wish I would have known before I had decided to book my ferry ticket. So, here I present to you my list of things you should know before planning a one day trip to Catalina Island.

Disclosure: Some of the links below are affiliate links. This means that, at zero cost to you, I will earn an affiliate commission if you click through the link and finalize a purchase.

Aerial view of Catalina Island Harbor

Catalina Island is located 22 miles south off the coast of California.

It takes one hour by high-speed ferry.

Yes, Catalina Island is technically part of Los Angeles County, California.

This depends on your budget and what activities you want to do while visiting. Taking a one day trip to Catalina Island will give you enough time to do a majority of the island’s activities but if you want to relax or go hiking or diving then 2-3 days would be more realistic.

Yes, around 90% of the 4,201 people live in the main city of Avalon and the rest of the 200+ residents live in the other city, Two Harbors.

Brief History of Catalina Island

black and white image of catalina island before major development

Several hundred years ago around 7000 BC, Santa Catalina was first inhabited by Tongva (indigenous people of California) who made settlements all throughout the island including modern-day Avalon. They used many of the island’s natural resources for trading along that California coast including soapstone which was found in an abundance. Eventually, in 1542 Europeans settled on the island years later and the Spanish explorer named the island San Salvador after his ship. With the Spanish came disease and it wiped out many of the Tongva tribes and it forced the population to relocate to the mainland of California.

In the 1800s the island and California’s ownership were passed from the Spanish over to the Mexicans in war. Thomas Robbins become the first private owner of Catalina Island in the mid-1800s awarded to him by a grant from the governor, at this time ranching and mining were the most popular ways to make a living on the island. During the Civil War, Catalina was taken over by the army in 1864 and a major of the inhabitants were kicked off, the army remained on the island for a year, and once they left came the return of the ranchers.

In 1887 the first pier and first hotel were built on Catalina Island and the owner at the time started running a regular boat service in hopes of it becoming a popular tourist destination. In 1919 William Wrigley (yes, the founder of Wrigley chewing gum) visited the island with his wife for the prospect of becoming part of a group investment to purchase the island. However, during this visit, he fell in love, which led him to buy out the other partners. He invested millions to improve the island and bring it to the attention of the American people.

Modern Day Catalina Island

To this day the descendants of William Wrigley still own Catalina Island but in the 1970s, Wrigley’s son Philip entrusted 88% of the land to the Catalina Island Conservancy to protect its native animals and plant species . Today 4,096 people live on this island, 90% of them living in Avalon, the main city, while the rest live in the more rural and less developed Two Harbors.

Why Plan a One Day Trip to Catalina Island?

day trip to santa catalina island

Catalina, officially known as Santa Catalina Island, is located 22 miles from the Southern California coast. It is known for its relaxing small-town atmosphere away from the fast-paced lifestyle of the mainland. It’s a great choice when you want something a little different. In my opinion, to fully take advantage of all Catalina has to offer you should be prepared to spend some money as it’s not the most budget-friendly destination.

13 Things to Know For a One Day Trip to Catalina Island

colorful catalina island ferry dock with mansions stacked on the hill in the background

1. The difference between Avalon and Two Harbors

The Catalina Express can take you to either Avalon or Two Harbors but what is the difference between the two? Avalon is the more touristy laid-back city, while Two Harbors is the rustic outdoorsy side known for snorkeling, camping, fishing, etc. Choosing which side to visit ultimately depends on your interests! In this post, my input will only be regarding Avalon as I did not visit Two Harbors.

2. There are 3 Ferry Locations to Catalina Island

  • Dana Point, CA
  • San Pedro, CA
  • Long Beach, CA

3. Limited public transport to the Ferry locations

Public transportation in California is among the worst in the county. I would say a rental car is a must to get to the ferry docks. Ubering is flat-out expensive unless you are staying close by to one of the ports. Bus routes are slower and do not always have convenient pick-up/drop-off locations.

4. Round trip on the ferry is $75 per person

catalina island ferry

The large upfront cost is one of the reasons why visiting Catalina Island on a budget can be difficult. Normally, if transportation is cheap I don’t feel so bad spending a little more at my destination. You can book your ferry in advance here.

5. Golf carts are the Catalina way

Golf Cart from Catalina Island Golf Cart Rentals

Considering Avalon is only 2.9mi 2 most of the locals get around by golf cart. Renting a golf cart is another fee that is almost necessary to see most of the iconic views on Catalina.

We rented a 4-seater from Catalina Island Golf Cart Rentals which cost $55/hr, whereas a 6-passenger would be $70/hr. They give you a map with suggested routes. To be able to explore everywhere you’ll need around 2 hours without rushing. My boyfriend and I lucked out because we found another couple who decided to split it with us, otherwise, I would have been a little disappointed to pay that rate for just two people. The company does provide you with a map that marks the recommended 2-hour routes.

If you don’t feel like navigating or driving around the island yourself book a private golf cart with a tour guide instead, they will take you to all the best viewpoints and stops around Avalon. This option is especially great if no one in your group is legal to drive the cart (25 or over).

6. An overnight isn’t necessary while visiting Catalina Island

Catalina island resort observation deck with white chairs and table and a view of palm trees and the harbor filled with boats

Everything can be done in one day fairly easily if you take an early ferry and leave late. Booking a room would only be worth it if you are looking for a slower-paced couple of days, want to escape on a romantic getaway, or are looking to hike or dive. Make sure to start thinking about reserving your hotel in advance because there are limited options and they book up fast!

Where to stay in Avalon

Spending an overnight or a weekend on Catalina Island may just be a much-needed relaxing getaway to help you recharge from city life or give you some quality time to connect with your partner. You can browse the limited hotel options on Avalon here or you can check out my recommendations below but be advised that finding a hotel for under $200/night is almost impossible. All options are right on the main strip of town.

$$ Catalina Island Seacrest Inn – One of the cheapest hotel options on the island. This converted home while tight quarters provides a full apartment-style layout that has a kitchen, living room, attached bathroom, and a private porch. One of the best features is the spa-sized tub that comes with some of the rooms. All guests have access to the sundeck with views of the ocean.

$$$ The Edgewater – This quaint beachfront hotel is clean and comfortable and has breakfast available downstairs. The oceanfront suites come with a kitchenette. Note: there is no elevator.

$$$ Bellanca Hotel – Newly opened hotel with modern decor and personal balconies. This hotel that feels like a resort will make your stay in Avalon even more enjoyable. There’s a restaurant, bar, and terrace onsite for your convenience and a 24-hour help desk. It gets even better, bikes and beach chairs are complimentary for you to use! Starting at just under $300/night I find the Bellanaca to be a really good deal.

$$$ Hotel Metropole – If you’re really looking for a luxury stay or are in need of some pampering this beachfront hotel has you covered. Once you manage to get out of your plush bed and take off your complimentary robe head out and enjoy the spa, wellness center, pool, hot tub, or arcade. A fireplace and balcony are a part of some rooms and views are either ocean, courtyard, or hillside.

7. Sunset will not be visible from Avalon because of the island’s positioning

looking out from the window of a plane flying over catalina island

I did not really think about whether or not the sunset would be visible during or before our visit. I am a sunset lover so I always try to plan everything around viewing the sunset. It did not affect any of our plans but it was a little disappointing. It is something to note if you’re trying to plan a romantic evening based around a sunset view because that will be a buzzkill!

8. The public beaches are easy to visit

Rachel Hannah wading in Catalina Island Public Beach

We hung out at Middle Beach which is just steps from the ferry dock and the strip of shops and bars. The beach didn’t seem overly crowded, but it was early October so there were no summer vacation crowds!

We quickly enjoyed some tropical drinks from a bar across the street and then walked right across to tan and swim. Swimming so close to all of the sailboats in the harbor was a great view, it was a bit rocky so I just kept my sandals on. If you’re planning to lay in the sun I’d plan to go before mid-late afternoon because as the sun starts to set the beach will quickly become shaded.

Step Beach and South Beach are the other public beaches on either side of Middle Beach.

My Finding’s Tip : If you want a more luxurious beachside experience check out the Cabana & Chaise Lounge Rentals at Descanto Beach Club. They can accommodate between 1-8 people and the prices range from $85-500 USD in the spring/fall and $105-$415 USD in the summer depending on the inclusions.

9. Wrigley Memorial & Botanic Garden is one of the cheapest island activities

exotic tree inside the Wrigley Memorial and Botanic Garden catalina island

The building of the Wrigley Memorial and Botanic Garden has beautiful tile work and the view at the top looks out over the gardens. Walking from the center of town is a 30-minute trek each way so a bike or golf cart would be the most convenient.

  • Price: $10 per adult, $8 for seniors, $5 per child.
  • Tickets can be purchased in person or booked in advance online .
  • Hours: Every day 8 am-5 pm

10. Most shops, museums, and tours close early

catalina island casino

Shops, tours, and museums start closing as early as 5:30. I didn’t pay attention to this at all! Right before catching our ferry, I decided that was the perfect time to shop for a t-shirt… I was the last customer before closing and had limited options!

If you are planning a day trip just start early and aim to do the tours and shopping first. Restaurants stay open late so if possible try and push eating dinner out later when the town starts becoming sleepy.

11. Catalina Chimes Tower offers the best free view

up close of bells representing the catalina island chimes tower

Seeing the view from Catalina Chimes Tower is a free alternative that will show you a view of the harbor and mountain vs looking out from on top of the mountain. If you decide against getting a golf cart rental. Getting to the tower from the city center is a quick walk. Something to be aware of is that to reach the tower, you have to walk against traffic along the edge of a busy one-way street.

12. Avalon gets crowded in the summer

Avalon and Two Harbors attract around 1 million tourists every year, a majority of those come during the summer. If visiting Catalina Island during this time, you’ll be fighting the crowds and the charm of Catalina could get overlooked. The recommended time to visit would be in the offseason which is in the spring or fall. I went in early October and it was perfect! The island didn’t feel overly busy and the water wasn’t too cold to go for a dip.

13. Most activities on Avalon cost money

a pink coral plant and a pink fish swimming on the right side of the plant

As you’ve probably noticed by now going on a day trip to Catalina Island isn’t cheap. Even though most activities in Avalon are not free there are a lot of unique options to pick from! If you’re planning to splurge you could really extend your time on the island for a couple of days to be able to experience a range of the most popular activities in Avalon. You can view your options in the next section below!

paragliding off catalina island pier

Although Catalina Island can be a retreat for rest and relaxation it can also be an adventure lovers heaven! Here are some of the most exciting tours that can easily be done on any day trip to Catalina Island!

On land tours

Catalina Scenic Tour – To see the most scenic places on the island this tour is a great option, especially for first-time visitors! It is also a much cheaper option than renting your own golf cart, especially if you don’t have more than 2 people in your group to split the cost with. The price per person is just $28 USD! On top of getting chauffeured around, your guide will also share will you a lot about Catalina Island’s history. This tour has the most total ratings out of any of the island’s tours on Viator.com!

Discover the Catalina Island Casino – The casino is Catalina’s most visually appealing and historical building dating back to 1929. If you want to step inside and learn about its glamourous Hollywood era and see the art deco murals you’ll need to join a tour such as this one . You will also get to watch a short film on the large Avalon Theatre screen and set out onto the casino’s balcony for an incredible view. It lasts for around 40 minutes and costs $28 USD.

Bison Expedition – In an all-terrain H-1 Hummer you will traverse the island’s rugged outback including Middle Canyon and Cape Canyon on your way to find wild Bison! You never know but you might also spot foxes and eagles too! This tour lasts 2 hours and costs $107 USD. Note : 10% of the proceeds go to support the Catalina Island Conservancy.

Haunted Catalina Ghost Tour – If you didn’t already know, Catalina Island is said to be extremely haunted. If you want to learn about its eerie past then this tour is for you! Your guide will walk your group around Avalon while sharing paranormal stories and mysteries. This exact tour has been voted into the Top 10 Ghost Tours in the country by USA Today and for only $25 USD it sounds like it’s worth it!

On the water tours

Undersea Sub Expedition – Get a glimpse at the creatures that lie underneath the water’s surface on this underwater cruise! The protected kelp fields at Lover’s Cove are one of the top highlights as this is where various schools of fish hang out! The clarity from the windows is really great and there are enough portholes on the boat for each person to have their own to look through. Your guide will also teach you a ton about fish, the island, and the environment. This 45-minute experience costs $48.50 USD and is fun for younger kids and adults alike.

Glass Bottom Boat Voyage – another fun tour for kids that is slightly cheaper than the submarine tour. This $27 USD glass bottom boat tour lasts 40 minutes and explores Lover’s Cove Marine Preserve where you will find colorful fish, coral, and other marine life. The overhead speakers will provide commentary about the different fish and underwater ecosystems.

Thank you for the great post!

Love your article I live in LA and this has convinced me to get my butt over to Catalina.

Awesome! It’s a great getaway

Catalina Island was one of my favorite destinations growing up as a kid in Southern California. Haven’t been back in years and sounds like there’s much to do! Will need to pencil that in for our next visit home.

This place looks absolutely stunning and I’d never heard of it but I do remember Jaws! I’m not over that side of the world often but when I do I’d love to look up Santa Catalina island. Thanks for sharing! 🙂

I never realized how much Santa Catalina Island had to offer! We had heard about the island, but never knew there were so many movies filmed there or that it has a bison population. Would love to head out there next time we make it to LA–the views look amazing and it sounds like a nice relaxing break from the busy city. The adventures sound wonderful, too! I’d love to go paddle boarding or kayaking there!

Kelp diving and bisons roaming wild! I’m sold. I will definitely check this place out next time I visit family in California.

The last things I think about when I picture Hollywood are roaming half wild bison and kelp forests! That’s incredible- I’d love to take in both the glamour and the nature here.

Great overview of Avalon. The kelp diving was once a great option but since El Nino the warm water has killed much of it and invasive species have moved in. They are shorter and it’s not the same experience. However there are still lots of Garabaldi. There’s also more than Avalon to experience – Two Harbors is a wonderful destination if you want to connect with the real Catalina. It’s a great bus ride across the island or short hop by boat.

I didn’t realize Catalina was a hotspot for kelp diving. I’ve always wanted to try that! Definitely seems worth a day trip from LA at least.

Catalina Island is very pretty. Your pictures definitely do it justice. It’s hard to believe there is so much to offer on one island that is so close to LA.

Chicago Cubs and Marilyn Monroe! you go me right there! The pier and waters appear serene as they could get. Reminds me a little of Calella de Palafrugell near Barcelona!

What a beautiful Island woth all the boats, condos, a tie woth Marilyn Manroe and lots of water sports! I am visiting LA in a few months again and I might visit there! Thanks! @ knycx.journeying

I think I’d really love to see Santa Catalina, obviously quite an attraction for the A Listers. Loved your fun fact about the Bisons, kinda weird how animals spring up and grow strong in strange places, now we know why in this case!

So beautiful. A seaside cocktail would be perfect right now! Great post 🙂

This is on my bucket list. I had no idea that there were bison on Catalina Island, but I do now. Having seen several in Wyoming last week, it never occurred to me that there were bison in California. The island looks so beautiful, as the coast of California always looks.

How funny that there are bison roaming around! Haven’t been but looks incredible, would love to check it out.

Wow, I didn’t even realise Santa Catalina island existed. I’d probably go just to see the location of Jaws – love that movie. And the salt water taffy sounds divine.

Day Trip to Catalina Island

Day trips to avalon.

Catalina Island is just about an hour boat trip from the mainland of Long Beach, California. It makes for a perfect day trip or extended vacation stay. Over the years Avalon has built a host of annual activities that make for an entertaining visit for families, couples or team building get-a-ways. June kicks off a variety of reoccurring events that you can add to your topside itinerary when you need a surface interval. Diving on Catalina in June is beautiful, as the water is warming and bring new kelp forest growth. Plan ahead to enjoy the last month before the summer crowds hit our shores.

Travel Tips

There are a few different ways to get to Catalina for a day trip or overnight visit. No matter what your plans, always book early. On June 7th the Catalina Express will begin its new extended schedule. Boats departing from San Pedro, Long Beach, and Dana Point will then have even more times from which to choose. Check out the Groupon offer and book in advance if you want to travel from Newport Beach on the Flyer. If you are in a hurry try the Island Express helicopter service from Long Beach.

Special Events

June 2, 2019 you can come experience “Catalinaland” with Charles Phoenix. Be prepared for your Catalina loving’ spirit to SOAR when Charles sweeps us away on a time travel storytelling and retro slide show adventure exploring the island’s classic landmarks, legends and lore. Learn the ABCs, 123s of Catalina history in the historic Avalon Casino Theatre with the Ambassador of Americana. The presentation will be followed by a book signing with Phoenix at the Catalina Island Museum. Get your tickets online

Reoccurring Events

For the foodie.

Summer kicks off a series of repeat events you can catch if you plan your day trip accordingly. If you love food head out to the Island in the first week of June. Avalon Restaurant Week is in its 7th year, showcasing some of Avalon’s most popular restaurants. This foodie celebration runs from Friday, May 31st through Thursday, June 6th. A great opportunity to indulge in a variety of specially created prix fixe menus awaits.

Entertaining History Buffs

June 7th is another monthly event known as First Fridays at the Museum . This is an opportunity to explore the museum’s galleries, digital theater, open-air plazas and shop in the Museum Store after dark. Each month features a themed program and a specialty cocktail, wine and beer. Movies lovers can enjoy some Catalina history and a show with the monthly Movies at the Museum events. June 26th will be the first film, “Easy Come, Easy Go”. Experience the museum’s outdoor amphitheater and Avalon’s beautiful summer nights in style. The first selection stars Elvis Presley as a former Navy frogman who is now a deep-sea diver by day and a singer by night.

The City of Avalon is always working to provide fun family friendly activities. Beginning June 18 through August 29, 2019 you can catch a game of beach bingo . Recurring weekly on Tuesday and Thursday at the South Beach Lifeguard Stand from 6:00-7:00pm. Bring your beach chair and some friends, Bingo cards are only $1 each and participants can win fun local prizes.  Be sure to check out the Avalon Library for weekly/monthly programs for your little ones! Another fun and Free activity hosted by the City of Avalon is the Kid’s Fishing Derby . Starting June 19 through August 21, 2019 every Wednesday at 7:00-9;00am on the Green Pleasure Pier. You can bring your own rod & reel or dropline (or purchase on the pier from Jay’s Rent-a-boat) and join the local fishing guide! Prizes awarded every week following the derby. Bait & gear also available on the Pier.

Nature Lovers

Recurring weekly on Thursday throughout the entire year the Catalina Island Conservancy provides volunteers access to the interior of the island. Visiting the James H. Ackerman Native Plant Nursery in Middle Ranch is an excellent opportunity to gain access to become more familiar with Island ecology and plant species while helping the nursery reach its goals. The CIC is also a great resource for bird enthusiasts. Bird life on Santa Catalina Island is an interesting mix of familiar mainland species. Catalina’s most common hummingbird while the Anna’s Hummingbird and the Orange-crowned Warbler, reaches its highest densities on the Island. Check in with their new Trail Head location as you enter town to get more information or try out the new restaurant, Toyon Grill .

Marine Life

Shore dives at the Casino Dive Park are perfect for a day trip on Catalina. The diversity of life is noticeable and the fish are friendly as with most marine preserves. Keep an eye out during the channel crossing for marine mammals. Blue whales swim and feed off the California coast from mid-June through October when krill is abundant. At that time, thousands of them can be found off the California coast.

Do not let the overcast skies deter you from visiting Avalon for a day trip or an extended visit. Air temperatures in June range from 67 to 53 Fahrenheit. Ocean temps will be on the rise averaging 65+F. One effect of cloud cover can be a plus to photographers. Rather than sun beams highlighting particulates in the water column, you get even light disbursement.

Dive and Snorkel Services

Day trip or multi-day adventure, Diving Catalina has you covered. Just bring your swimsuit, towel and sunscreen; Diving Catalina will provide all you need to enjoy an underwater experience full of memories you won’t be able to keep to yourself. Diving Catalina offers guided SCUBA and snorkeling tours as well as equipment rentals for licensed divers. No certification? No worries, mate! Certification Courses

SCUBA certification classes for those who are ready to take the next step. Dive course academics can be completed on your own online from the comfort of your home! Just four days on the island allow you to master your skills in a beautiful open ocean training area. Check out our home page for all your Snorkel and SCUBA needs on Catalina Island.

Advanced Diver Classes

Already SCUBA certified and ready for a new adventure? In just 2 days you can complete the Advanced Open Water Diver course! Best part is you don’t have to be “advanced” to take it. This course is designed to advance your diving, so you can start right after earning your Open Water Diver certification. The lessons help build confidence and expand your scuba skills through different types of dives. The dives you log help develop capabilities as you find new ways to have fun SCUBA diving. Diving Catalina is Avalon’s top rated dive service by both Yelp and Tripadvisor. Come experience our top-notch customer service for yourself. We love building relationships with our clients that last well beyond their island experience.
