Kakadu, nourlangie and yellow waters tour.
This one day tour from Darwin is exhausting, but if you have limited time, it’s your best option for seeing this amazing UNESCO site. The tour includes visiting Nourlangie Rock, a cruise on the Yellow River to meet the local crocs. After lunch, visit Warradjan Aboriginal Centre and learn the history of the area.
If you can stay longer, do one of these multi-day tours. We did the 3-day tour, and it was brilliant.
Located about 90 minutes from Darwin, Litchfield National Park is one of Darwin’s more manageable day trips. It’s a smaller park with a loop road that passes by all the best attractions and has many places to stop and take in the scenery. You’ll still get the fantastic landscape, varied wildlife, and great outdoor activities in this park. It’s just on a smaller, more manageable scale.

Litchfield National Park Full-Day Safari from Darwin
This tour is run by Wayoutback Safaris , who have offered tours in the Northern Territory since 1999. I first travelled with them back in 2002 and had a brilliant time. Since then, everyone who we have recommended to them has felt the same way. We are due to go again later this year.
This 11.5 hour day tour takes a maximum of 27 travellers and includes a BBQ lunch and hiking and swimming. Visit Florence Falls, Wangi Falls and Buley Rockhole. You will also see the impressive termite mounds that the area is famous for.

Incredible day trips from Darwin you need to try

A holiday to Darwin isn’t complete without venturing into the natural and cultural wonders that lie beyond its city lights. Here, four of the best day trips from Darwin.
Darwin is a colourful city thanks to its vibrant markets , outdoor movies and other urban delights. But the city’s surrounds are equally (if not more) enchanting. Hop in the car – or catch a ferry, bus or charter flight – to one of these gems that sparkle just a short distance away from the Northern Territory capital. Here are the four best day trips from Darwin.
Litchfield National Park
If you fancy waterfalls, emerald-green swimming holes and a tropical and tranquil setting, Litchfield National Park is only a 1.5-hour drive from Darwin. Travel down the Stuart Highway and enter the park via the tiny township of Batchelor, stopping at the magnetic termite mounds before exploring the plunging waterfalls at Florence Falls, or floating inside a network of peaceful waterholes at Buley Rockhole. A walking path links the two popular spots, so take your time ambling along this route, pausing for regular dips in the adjacent waters.
Stop at the magnetic termite mounds before making your way to Florence Falls.
Other stunning sites within Litchfield include Tolmer Falls and Wangi Falls, the best-known attraction in the national park. Within the park, you’ll find a kiosk and barbecue facilities at Wangi Falls, walking trails and a picnic spot that’s ideal for a lazy tropical lunch. Access to the park is free and the best time to visit is during the early morning or late afternoon.
Total travel time, Darwin return : about four hours
What to pack : Sunscreen, lunch, water, beach towel and goggles if you want to explore underwater.
Float inside a network of peaceful waterholes at Buley Rockhole.
Mary River Region
If spotting wildlife in its natural habitat is high on the agenda, and you’re partial to a rainforest walk, travel 70 kilometres to the Mary River wetlands east of Darwin along the Arnhem Highway (leading to Kakadu National Park). Make Fogg Dam Conservation Area your first stop, where you can choose between the wetlands or a walk. Up to 200 species of birdlife gather among the lilies and reeds in the wetlands, including rainbow pitta birds and crimson finches. You might spy the odd croc, too.
Make Fogg Dam Conservation Area your first stop in the Mary River region.
Walking trails will take you through the rainforest, past ancient fig and banyan trees, to a number of lookouts overlooking the wetlands. Take your adrenalin levels up a notch a little further along the highway with a jumping crocodile cruise . Over one (spine-tingling) hour, you’ll coast along the Adelaide River, where crocs lurk just beneath the water’s surface and jump up to snap at buffalo meat hanging from rods just off the boat’s deck.
Total travel distance, Darwin return : two hours
What to pack: a broad-rimmed hat, sunscreen, water, lunch and binoculars.
Take an airboat tour of the wetlands or a croc-jumping cruise.
Crab Claw Island
Just over an hour’s drive from Darwin, Crab Claw Island Resort is a picturesque coastal retreat perched on the water’s edge – providing the perfect balance of family-friendly fun, fishing and relaxation. There are two pools and boats for hire, or simply relax on the deck. If you’re a keen angler, don’t forget to register to catch the Million Dollar Fish .
If you want to leave the car at home, jump on a ferry and head over to Crab Claw for a seafood lunch overlooking the beach. The ferry departs from Cullen Bay in Darwin mid-morning and returns late afternoon. Check departure and arrival times directly with SeaLink.
Total travel distance, Darwin return: two hours driving or a full day tour with SeaLink.
What to pack: a broad-rimmed hat, sunscreen, bathers, beach towel and water.
Berry Springs
If a short-ish day trip from Darwin sounds ideal, you can’t go past a visit to Berry Springs Nature Park – it’s a real-deal tropical paradise. Travel south from the city and turn off at Cox Peninsula Road to get to the park, located just 50 minutes’ drive from Darwin. Pull in at Territory Wildlife Park on the way to explore its vast 404 hectares, home to almost every variety of native bird, reptile and macropod.
You can’t go past a visit to Berry Springs Nature Park.
A shuttle bus takes visitors to the Nocturnal House, which hums with ghost bats, sugar gliders, quolls and other night-time critters, as well as the walk-in aviary, aquarium, stingray lagoon and dingo enclosure. Refresh over a mango chutney-laced lunch and a tropical fruit ice cream at Crazy Acres Mango Farm , then dive into Berry Springs: three sparkling, azure-hued waterholes fringed by pandanas.
Total travel distance, Darwin return : 1.5 hours
What to pack : mask and snorkel, water, towel and sunscreen.
Visit the Nocturnal House, which hums with ghost bats, sugar gliders, quolls and other night-time critters.

Hiring a car for Darwin day trips can be a game-changer for those wanting to explore other parts of the Northern Territory.
While organised tours are convenient, renting a car provides the flexibility to explore at your leisure, ensuring you can fully immerse yourself in the beauty and diversity of the region.
Most major rental companies operate from the airport or convenient locations in Darwin, including Hertz , Alamo , Thrifty , and Enterprise . By hiring a vehicle from them, you can create your itinerary and set your pace. You can also spend as much time at each destination as you want and venture off the beaten path to discover hidden gems that may not be part of standard tour routes.
For those wondering what type of vehicle to hire, your best bet will be a 4WD, as this will give you the flexibility and capability for off-roading during your road trips from Darwin.
Before setting off for Darwin day trips by car, familiarising yourself with the climate of where you will be venturing into is worthwhile.
Known for its tropical monsoon climate, Darwin experiences two distinct seasons – the Wet Season (November to April) and the Dry Season (May to October).
The Dry Season is particularly popular for road trips due to its mild, dry, and sunny weather, making it ideal for exploring the region’s natural wonders and outdoor attractions.
The Wet Season, by contrast, can bring heavy rainfall and occasional cyclones, potentially affecting road conditions. Subsequently, you should always check the weather forecast and road closures before starting your Darwin day trips. Be prepared for varying needs as you traverse this stunning part of Australia.
Day trips from Darwin offer incredible adventures for the tourist, but it’s essential to be aware of a few crucial factors of what road-tripping in the Northern Territory can involve.
Firstly, the vast distances between towns and attractions can be deceptive, so ensure your vehicle is in top condition and carries adequate supplies, including water, food, and a first aid kit. Additionally, the region’s weather can be extreme, with scorching temperatures during the day and chilly nights, so pack accordingly and stay hydrated.
Wildlife, particularly kangaroos and cattle, can pose road hazards, so drive cautiously, especially at dawn and dusk. Crocodiles, box jellyfish, and snakes are also a real threat to be mindful of.
Saltwater crocodiles, or ‘salties’, dominate the region’s waterways, posing a danger to swimmers and anglers. During the wet season, box jellyfish emerge along the coast, their venomous stings potentially fatal.
All year round, venomous snakes like the inland taipan inhabit the outback. So, always adhering to safety guidelines and respecting the local environment is essential to enjoying this stunning region while minimising the risks associated with these native species.
It is also worth remembering that roadhouses and fuel stations can be sparse, so plan your refuelling stops carefully during your Darwin day trips by car.
Additionally, mobile phone coverage may be limited in remote areas. Therefore, a satellite phone or an emergency communication device in your vehicle is recommended.
Lastly, respect indigenous people and their land and culture, as many areas require permits or have cultural significance. With these precautions in mind, you’ll be well-prepared for an unforgettable road trip in the Northern Territory.

The Top End is Northern Territory’s most accessible region, and no trip to this glorious place is complete without adventuring out bush into the wild and isolated landscapes famed for red dirt and blazing sunsets.
Make the most of beautiful dry season days and explore the Territory’s Top End with these five easy day trips from Darwin. From red cliff beaches to lush swimming spots, here are some of my favourite Top End adventures that make for a great day trip or overnighter.
Jump to Section
1. gunn point – for beach driving & camping.
Time from Darwin: 1 hour 10 minutes Distance from Darwin : 73km
Gunn Point is a great place to set up by the water for an afternoon cook-up, sunset beers, and beach camping for a night or two. An easy hour drive out of Darwin, Gunn Point is a popular spot for locals after a weekend away.
Most of the Gunn Point Peninsula is held by NT Land Corporation which allows free public use of the area for recreation. It’s also dog friendly! Just be mindful of your footprint as there are a few restrictions in place such as designated camping zones to protect the area’s natural environment.
The final section of road down to the beach is unsealed and can be pretty gnarly after wet season rains erode the track, so I recommend taking a 4WD . There are no amenities like toilets or drinking water out this way, so pack everything you need to stay safe and comfortable for your time out there.
Unfortunately, swimming at Gunn Point isn’t recommended due to the likely presence of Saltwater crocodiles. So look but don’t touch!

2. Dundee and Finnis River Station – For Red Cliff Beaches & Sunset Beers
Time from Darwin: 1 hour 40 minutes Distance from Darwin: 138km
It’s hard not to fall in love with the endless skies and blue-turquoise water as take in the view on any Top End beach, and Dundee Beach is no different.
It’s a bit of a stretch to call Dundee a town, but this laid-back place makes for a great springboard for fishing and 4WDing adventures.
Dundee Beach Markets grace this small seaside village every Saturday during the dry season (May – October) setting up right on the shoreline across the road from The Lodge – the local post office, convenience store, petrol station, bait shop, restaurant, and watering hole rolled into one.
The Holiday Park behind The Lodge offers a range of accommodation options that make Dundee a great spot for an overnight trip. There’s even a pool, so you can cool off on those balmy blue sky days without fear of crocs or stingers (this is another spot where you should avoid swimming in the ocean!).
Drive a little further out of Dundee and you’ll find yourself on Finnis River Station. Open to the public for day use, this 200km2 cattle station is a great place to explore the stunning red-cliff coastline and incredible magnetic termite mounds.
Nearby Accommodation
3. wagait beach and mandorah – for darwin harbour views & country pubs.
Time from Darwin: Approx. 1 hour 30 minutes by car / 15 minutes by ferry Distance from Darwin: 121km
Catch Darwin city views from across the harbour at Wagait Beach and Mandorah. You can take the 15 minute Sealink Ferry from Cullen Bay and enjoy the ride across the shimmering Darwin Harbour or drive the whole way around to the Cox Peninsula – it’s an easy drive from Darwin with sealed roads the whole way. If you’ve got a 4WD, park up on the beach and BYO lunch or if you’ve taken the ferry, jump aboard the Cox Country Club shuttle bus at the wharf and enjoy a cool bevy or pub feed.
Combined ferry and shuttle tickets are available on the Sealink website .
4. Robin Falls – For Shaded Hikes to a Hidden Waterfall
Time from Darwin: Approx. 1 hour 30 minutes Distance from Darwin: 126km
For an easy hike and waterfall adventure, drive down the Stuart Highway to Robin Falls.
Meander up the riverbed (which may or may not be flowing depending on the time of year you visit) toward the falls. Head early to avoid the crowds as it’s a small spot and you’ll want to experience its quiet seclusion before anyone else turns up for the day.
There’s even a small, free camping area at the beginning of the trailhead where you can pull up for the night if you want to extend your stay. This can’t be booked ahead of time, so first in best camped!

5. Cascades (Litchfield National Park) – For Exploring Hidden Gems
Time from Darwin: Approx. 1 hour 35 minutes Distance from Darwin: 124km
Skip Buley Rockholes and Florence Falls to spend a day exploring a hidden gem of Litchfield National Park. Cascades is less prominent than some of the other Litchy swimming spots so sees fewer crowds. It’s easy to feel like you have the place all to yourself which is a magic feeling in the Australian Outback.
Cascades is a chain of shallow pools made of red rock which make for a stunning backdrop for a day out picnicking and sunbathing. There are two sections – upper and lower. It’s a decent hike up and over the ridge (about 1.5km one way) to get to the upper pools.
You can clamber down the rock holes from the top to get to the small falls which shade a deeper swimming hole and the lower pools. Alternatively, walk to the falls from the bottom. A shady walk back through rugged rainforest will complete your round trip back to the car park.
NT Parks rate both walks to Upper and Lower Cascades as Grade 4 – moderate to difficult so be prepared, pack water, and walk outside of the peak heat periods of the day.
Don’t forget to purchase your Parks Pass which you need to visit any of the sites in Litchfield National Park.

Sneaky Bonus Trips
The Northern Territory’s Top End region is an epic place to reconnect and immerse yourself in wild, isolated places without having to venture too far off the beaten track. With a little planning, it’s easy to take on a trip that’s doable in a short time frame.

Day Trips From Darwin FAQs
What kinds of amenities are there.
If you’re outside of a national park area, it’s likely there won’t be any amenities including toilets, drinking water, or rubbish collection. Most national park sites will have basic toilet facilities but no potable water. Check the NT National Parks website before you go if you’re unsure. It’s always a good idea to pack extra drinking water and snacks and to be prepared to take all your rubbish with you.

Is it safe to swim at the beaches?
It’s not always safe to swim at the beach due to the danger of Saltwater crocodiles and Irukandji during stinger season which typically spans from October – May. Some beaches are signed for the risks, so keep an eye out and obey any signage in place.
Will I see a crocodile?
The Northern Territory is croc country so always be aware when adventuring around waterways.
When is the best time of year to visit Darwin?
The best time of year to visit Darwin and the Top End is during the dry season, which runs from May to October. Although still hot, there is less humidity and wet weather, making it ideal for hiking , camping, and wild swimming.
How far is Litchfield from Darwin?
Litchfield National Park is around 1 hour and 30 minutes’ drive from Darwin city and around 110km on sealed road.
Can you do a day trip to Kakadu from Darwin?
Technically yes, however it’s not recommended as it’s a three-hour drive each way. Some tour companies offer day trips to Kakadu, leaving early and arriving back late, however as the driving is taken care of for you, it’s much easier than driving yourself.
We recommend spending at least one night in Kakadu (ideally more!) to make it worthwhile.
How many days in Darwin is enough?
Three days in Darwin is enough to see the city, however if you’re keen to explore some of the national parks, especially Kakadu or Nitmiluk National Parks, we recommend around a week.
Can you do a day trip to Katherine from Darwin?
Like Kakadu, Katherine is a three hour drive from Darwin, so a day trip is technically possible, but it would be extremely rushed! We recommend spending two to three days in Katherine.

Kakadu day trip Itinerary
7 AM: Depart from Darwin
You will need to wake up early for this one. 7 AM is the perfect time to leave Darwin. Make sure to eat a good brekkie before leaving as you will get lunch a bit late.
From Darwin, put “Yellow Water Billabong” in your GPS. It’s a 3-hour drive.
8:30 AM: Enter Kakadu National Park
At about 8:30 AM, you will get to the entrance of the park. You will be asked to show your pass. Make sure you printed it or have it on your phone.
10:30 AM: Yellow Water Billabong
You will get to Yellow Waters billabong between 10AM and 11AM. This billabong is the perfect place to discover the wildlife in Kakadu.
It’s also referred to as Ngurrungurrudjba, which is the native-Australian name.
If you are visiting during the dry season, make sure to go on the 2.6 km return walk across the floodplain.
You will get to a lookout where you can see beautiful views of the billabong. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to do that during the wet season as there is too much water (and crocodiles).
The best thing to do in Yellow Water Billabong is going on a cruise. It lasts up to 2 hours. The local guides will take you all around the billabong.
It’s a very unique experience and you will get to see loads of crocodiles and birds. The guides are very friendly and will help you to spot the wildlife.
They will also give you a lot of information about the ecosystem and the traditional stories.
Click here for more information and prices.
1-2 PM: Lunch
After the cruise, go for lunch. Food is not cheap in Kakadu so if you want to save money, pack a sandwich before leaving.
If you’d rather going to the restaurant, head to the Barra Bistro & Bar at Cooinda Lodge. You can find their menus here .
2:30 PM: Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre
Kakadu National Park is managed by both the traditional owners and Parks Australia. This is quite unusual but is an amazing thing.
For this reason, Kakadu is one of the best places in Australia to learn more about aboriginal culture.
The Warradjan Aboriginal Culture Centre was entirely developed by the traditional owners. You will find amazing collections of aboriginal artefacts.
This includes paintings, clothes and plenty more. They also organise workshops during which you can meet local artists. They usually show you how they paint, play music…
It’s incredibly interesting and such a good way to understand what Australia is really like.
4 PM: Burrungkuy (Nourlangie) Rock Art Site
After the cultural centre, head to Nourlangie Rock Art Site. It’s home to some of the most incredible rock art in the world and the oldest man-made landmarks in Australia .
The paintings are so old that they can’t even be dated properly.
The existence of these paintings is one of the main reasons why Kakadu was added the UNESCO world heritage list.
Once you get there, head to the path leading you to the Nourlangie Rock Art Walk. It’s a 1.5 km easy circuit walk.
The boardwalk will lead you to the Anbangbang Gallery. From there, you can either make your way back or keep going on the hike to Gunwarddehwardde Lookout. The views from there are fantastic.
Please note that the park rangers also organise free tours. Make sure to check their schedule to see if you can go on one of the walking tours. It’s very interesting.
6 PM: Drive back to Darwin
Once you’re done, you can start making your way back to Darwin. You should get there before 10 PM.
Bonus: Sunset at Ubirr
If after visiting Nourlangie you are still up for more, go to Ubirr to watch the sunset.
It’s a 50 minutes drive from Nourlangie so you need to make sure to leave at least 1h30 before sunset (so between 5 PM and 5:30 PM).
Once you parked, go on a walk to the cliff. You can sit there and watch the sun setting behind the lands. It’s stunning! You can even spot buffalos in the background!
This step will add another hour drive though so you need to make sure you are ready for that. It also means that you won’t be back to Darwin before 11 PM.
It’s one of the most amazing experiences in Australia so it’s well worth the effort and you will already be driving quite a bit so you might as well!
Tips to enjoy your visit to Kakadu
Kakadu is a pretty wild place and there are a few things you should be aware of before visiting. These tips and tricks will help you enjoy your visit.
- Eat breakfast and pack your lunch: this day trip will be full-on. You need to make sure you ate properly in the morning to be full of energy for the drive and activities. Restaurants are a bit expensive so packing your lunch is a good way to save money.
- Take coffee and water: again, the facilities in the park are limited so it’s better to take coffee in a thermos. Make sure to take loads of drinking water. It’s very hot and humid in Northern Territory which means you will sweat a lot and will need to stay hydrated even more than normal.
- Visit during the dry season: many sites and roads are closed during the wet season so if you can, prioritise the dry season. If you are visiting in summer, check the official website for updates before you go.
- Wear walking shoes: you will be walking a lot during the day and Kakadu is known for being home to all sorts of animals. Make sure to wear closed-toe shoes! Do not wear thongs (flip-flops)!
- Take mosquito spray and sunscreen : mosquitoes in Kakadu can be nasty. Very nasty. I highly recommend taking a mosquito spray (preferably eco-friendly) to avoid getting bitten too much. Sunscreen is also important to avoid sunburns.
- Wear a hat .

Welcome to Darwin, the Northern Territory’s tropical capital. There’s no time to waste, so get cracking at 6.30 am and hit the road to Wulna Country, where your Limilngan-Wulna hosts – the land’s Traditional Owners – will greet you with a Cul Cul or ‘Welcome to Country’. Learn about their culture during bush tucker talks and didgeridoo and basket weaving demonstrations. We continue East along the Arnhem Highway to the Corroboree Billabong on the Mary River for a cruise to learn about the Top End’s wetlands and sight the variety of birdlife and the saltwater crocodiles. After lunch we continue to the border of Kakadu and Arnhem Land, Cahill’s Crossing, where the 4WD is utilised to traverse the croc-infested East Alligator River. Welcome to Arnhem Land. Learn about the cultural importance of the West Arnhem Land region as your Bininj guide takes you to restricted areas that First Nation ancestors have been visiting for thousands of years. Spend the afternoon learning about the region and its people’s history from your guide, before heading back to Kakadu for an overnight stay.
