  • O6435EZcaitlins 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Not Surprised They Shut Down, But Surprised It Took This Long I wish I would have written this review earlier and maybe saved a lot of these reviewers some money, aggravation, disappointment, etc. but I wanted to hope that our experience was a rarity. In April of 2022, we started to reach out to the Island Princess for a corporate event for late June of 2022. We had visitors coming in from Europe and Asia, as well as across the US and it was the first time since the pandemic that this much of the team was going to be together. I then spent the next couple of months trying to pin them down on their location (red flag: based on everyone I spoke with at Island Princess and Marriott, they had left their spot at the Marriott under bad circumstances), the contract (I was chasing them down to get THEM to send a contract and payment info!!), the food and drink menu and the logistics (so many red flags there - one person told us they make all the food arrangements, another told us they order from whatever local or chain restaurant we prefer, a third said they use the chef at Pirates Resort, who was impossible to get ahold of)… the main problem was really getting anyone to respond to me. Emails, calls, texts, they mostly went unanswered except a couple of time when Chris emailed or called with some reason/excuse or another but reassuring me we would be all set for the June event, and I felt bad for this struggling small business. A couple of weeks before the event date, when we were finally about to cancel and make other arrangements, one GREAT employee contacted me and was very responsive and reassured me all would be well. We worked together on the panning for a couple of weeks, until late in the week prior to the event when she texted me to tell me she was no longer with the Island Princess. (Worrisome!) Cut to the day before the event and I get a call from the first mate/deckhand (NOT one of the owners, NOT the captain) who tells me that they failed their Coast Guard inspection and would not be able to fulfill the contract. I had ONe day to make and communicate alternate arrangements for a large group of travelers who wanted to be on the water. In that moment I thought “Fool, you can’t even let yourself be surprised by this.” I never for one moment doubt they didn’t pass their Coast Guard inspection - a company that disorganized was likely not keeping up on basic safety regulations for their vessel - but it was also a convenient excuse for them to not honor their contract which I don’t think they really ever planned to do. I knew if I waited, this business would close down. It’s not just a slip rental issue. This was a poorly run, likely unsafe (not according to me, ask the Coast Guard!), completely non customer focused business. If you read this far, you should know that we immediately contacted The Boathouse in Stuart. They were SO responsive and Waleska made the quickest arrangements for a group event that I’ve ever seen, she did it with such pleasure, the food as always was great, we had the upstairs private room with a bar so it was the perfect vibe, and it is right on the water so our guests could go walk on the boardwalk and the floating dock. Now we almost exclusively visit one of their family of restaurants or use them for catering when we have a company event. THAT is the kind of business that you want to do business with!! • aco2010 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Pirates of the sea !!! I booked with Island Princess in February 2023 after speaking with Chris Hammond who presented himself as the captain and boat owner in detail of what was required for a burial at sea. This trip was to scatter my mother’s ashes at sunrise. I signed the contract and gave a 50% deposit with agreement that full payment would be made the date of the service. In hindsight a red flag should have gone up when we received an email asking for full payment shortly after signing the contract and paying the deposit. We contacted Chris Hammond immediately and he apologized and said it was to assure him that we would show up as he had had others be “ No -Shows ”. Quickly I responded that a no show was not an option for me as he had 50% of our money and flights had been booked along with hotels for all. He agreed apologized and said he would meet us the morning of June 3rd. As in our signed contract that monies owed along with gratuities would be payed then. The date of the service was to be June 3,2023 as I had to wait for the end of the school year to travel. I arrive along with my family from Tennessee and Houston, my cousins from Oklahoma and my mother’s college roommate who is 79 years old and made the trip from Colorado. The only reason that we came to Florida was to say goodbye and carry out my late mother’s wishes for her ashes to be scattered in the sea she so loved. We emailed Chris Hammond at Island Princess as soon as we got to Stuart Florida and made several calls the day before the service with no answer. We finally called the marina where we were to sail from in the next morning only to find out that The Island Princess had skipped out of the marina owing for their slip rental and fuel. Sadly we were told others had shown up for their charters as well, only to learn as we did that they had been robbed as well. I post this review so others may be advised how unscrupulous and deceptive this man and his wife Emilia are. I mention her name because it is her name on my signed contract as the owner of the Island Princess. Stay away from these two individuals and to any unsuspecting marina make sure that you take a large deposit and check reference before letting them do business from your dock. I hope taking the time to compose this review will help others not to go through the disappointment and heartache that our family was put through. Read more Written June 5, 2023

  • judic765 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Cruise was fine but fly-by-night business practices The cruise was fine, the staff was great but getting to the boat was totally frustrating. We got stopped at a crossing, waiting for a lengthy train on our way from Jupiter to Stuart. When my GPS indicated that we would be late for our cruise, I looked up the phone number for Island Princess Cruises. Unbelievably, I had to listen to a recording, giving me 9 different options for other recordings - there was NO way to speak to a human. I reviewed the directions given by Island Princess once we got to the resort where the boat was docked so that we could hurry down once we arrived. The instructions said that we should look for the Dockmasters office and there we would find signs for Island Princess so we rushed to the office...NO sign. I frantically ran around the dock area and finally found a small sign near the hotel's restaurant. We made the cruise but based on the experience, it is a very poorly-run business. • Camper04275917618 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Private Charter beware I think most of the reviews here are for the standard daytime set river cruises, as our group of 40 did not have a great experience. If you choose to stop reading here, please see the pictures, as they tell most of the story. This was a private charter for 40 people with dinner and an open bar. From the videos on YouTube and the pictures that we reviewed, the boat looked like a great experience. So we booked it, and figured that the nearly 5 digit price tag would be worth it. When booking, they were very responsive and spoke to me on the phone to answer my questions. About a month before our trip, I called and sent an email asking to update our dinner order to add a dessert. No reply. 3 days before our trip, I wanted to confirm everything, so I called again. No call back from my voice mail. 2 days before the trip, I call the regular line to book the stock cruises and spoke to someone in person, they were not able to help me but said someone from the private charter would call me back. Finally spoke with someone to finalize the plans, and they asked me what we were doing and if we were having dinner or what on our cruise. I was very concerned at this point with their lack of knowledge of our trip- even though the invoice was paid in full 4 weeks prior, that clearly listed the details of the meal and everything! We worked out the details and moved forward. They did make sure to tell me that I chartered the boat from 7pm to 10pm, so if we were late arriving, and left the dock late due to that, the cruise would still end at 10. Upon arrival to the ship, everything started to unravel. We arrived at the boat at 7pm sharp as instructed. They were about half prepared for our group. The food was half set up. No silverware was out. No one was behind the bar ready to serve drinks, at EITHER of the 2 bars on board, one upstairs and one down. The first mate was working very hard and had a great attitude. He was very pleasant, and frankly I was embarrassed for him. He was really hustling, but they needed at least another hour to prepare. He was constantly running back and forth, upstairs and back down to man the bar. We had just gotten off a bus from 30 min away, so a few guests wanted to use the restroom. The mate had to go down in a hatch through the floor right between the food and the bar to “prime” the water pump so the toilets would work. One of the bathrooms was “Out of Order,” and the other was pretty disgusting. (see attached pictures). The boat looked like a Fraternity had just completed a day drinking cruise. Trash and chairs stacked up completely blocking a doorway. (See attached pictures) During my phone call to work out the details of the cruise a few days prior, they asked me where I wanted to go? I told them we were open to anything, we just wanted to see the sights, so she mentioned a really pretty bridge that had a lot of lights and would be very pretty for the guests to see. We never saw anything nice. Pulled a 360 more than once during the cruise, and never had any kind of interaction from the captain except for telling everyone to sit down to leave the dock and to sit down to re-dock at the end. Then he proceeded to tell everyone to “abandon ship” and to “get off my boat”. Honorable mention, the cruise docked and ended at 9:30, so we got shorted 30 minutes of time. This was a group of medical professionals who don’t really have super high or glamorous standards, but this was just bad. Don’t make the same mistake we did. It was not professional and not fun. Spend $30 bucks during the day and see the sunset with a bunch of other people and get a boxed lunch, don’t plan a nice cruise. Read more Written March 30, 2023
  • texastoast4 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Tripadvisor is usually very accurate with reviews and ratings...they got this one wrong! Tripadvisor is usually very accurate with reviews.......they got this one wrong! I can't believe other people thought this was a good cruise. We booked boat for a private professional group with 40 people for sunset dinner cruise. We were literally embarrassed for our guests 5 minutes after boarding. It looked nothing like the pictures online. The boat is in rough shape. Outdated, dirty, old, wood rot everywhere. We had a few guests that hesitated to board as we approached on the dock. Second, the crew with the exception of the first mate/bartender, were frankly rude and unresponsive to most of our guests and seemed unengaged. Third, as soon as we boarded, there were no drinks or reception. The bar was closed and we just sat there waiting as the Captain shouted to us to sit down as we left the dock. Forth, the dining room was poorly set up and disorganized with no place settings or utensils set. Nothing like the pictures. There were garbage cans and supplies piled up in the little galley bar n front overflowing with empty boxes and filled garbage bags. It smelled like sour sewer bilge water. There was a row of a few chafing dishes lined up a single side table only. The food was garden variety early-bird buffet. One salad dressing, no dessert. Proteins were OK but I saw many half-eaten plates going in the trash. I saw several of our guests snatch potato chip bags from the untended galley just to get something else to eat. We admittedly did not purchase the full wine and liquor open bar option up front, but we were so embarrassed for our guests, we immediately gave them a credit card and opened a tab to try and improve the experience. The Captain did not talk to us or tell us anything during the cruise. No information, no welcome, no jokes or stories? We decided to take over the PA music system just to liven things up. The Captain did allow a few of the young women to steer the boat for a few minutes which was nice, but he was frankly rude and short to most of the gentlemen guests. When we returned to the dock the Captain shouted "Abandon ship, get off my boat!" We were not sure if he was joking or serious, but we realized quickly he was serious? We contacted the company privately the next day, and they basically told us we got exactly what we paid for! They were apologetic that we did not enjoy the dinner cruise but offered no recompense or compensation. We asked most of our guests what they thought, and they recommended we seek a refund. This has never happened in the 18 years we have done this with these guests. Certainly not the experience of others as depicted online and through Tripadvisor? Honestly, we felt this was fraud and sham? Beware. Read more Written March 26, 2023

The houses really are incredible. The narration is fun and I learned a bunch of fun facts, but it really Needs to be updated. The boxed lunch was really good. The cushioned seating around the boat really needs an upgrade. It looks very old. The crew was great, there’s plenty of snacks and they will keep the drinks flowing. Its an odd thing to float by and watch people golf on one of the most exclusive golf courses in the world, and you’ve paid to see it, lol. We did wave to a group playing and they did wave back, so that was fun. Oh, to be insanely rich. And bring sunscreen! If you stay on top of the boat and don’t continue to reapply, the sun will get ya. And I’m from Florida. Whoops. Thank you for a fun day!!! Read more Written March 24, 2023
  • jeanhC829HD 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Smell We did the 4.5hr lunch cruise Easy to find the departure location, lots of parking. Lunch was a nice croissant with ham, turkey and cheese. Tomato, lettuce, mayo, salt and pepper came on the side. Fruit and cookie as well. Great views of the river and the homes along the river. The taped commentary needs updating they talk about Olivia Newton John in the present and she is past. The boat could use some TLC, paint and polish. This is very noticeable while boarding. The reason for three stars is there was a foul smell in the main cabin area. When we asked about it we were told they didn't know what the smell was maybe diesel, it was not diesel is smelt like backed up sewer. Suggestions to those that book this tour: Arrive early get in line (30 mins) go to the back of the boat and go up top. Be prepared to be outside because the smell on Feb 25, 2023 was unbearable. Unfortunately there is not enough room for all outside (on a busy Saturday) I would bring out of town guest and go again I'd just make sure to get there early to get outside! Testimonials

We just took a half hour trip around the port. Learned more about the rich and famous who make Jupiter home. The young captain was from the Bahamas but we don't remember his name. He did a great job though!

The boat looked better in real life than on the photo on website. I was pleasantly surprised that it had leather seats. I will definitely make this a regular activity w family and friends.
Great guide, very friendly and knowledgeable, made it a pleasure!

Thanks very much for taking us out on the Loxahatchee River on Saturday. Our kids had a blast... they said the river cruise was one of their favorite things on our week-long trip. I passed along your card to Adam and encouraged him to call you, whether for tours or fishing. He seemed interested in both. I hope he follows up. I look forward to staying in touch. I hope to get back down there this spring, but if not I will see you around this time next year.

Just a note to thank you and to let you know how much fun we had on your Conch Cruise…Don kept us entertained! My friends all said, “we feel like we’re on vacation,” and it’s fun being a tourist in your own town.

What’s it like to dine on Tampa’s new riverboat cruise Craft? We took a ride.

  • Helen Freund Times staff

TAMPA — We almost didn’t make the boat.

Traffic snarled through downtown Tampa and stretched onto the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway, delaying what would have been a 45-minute drive from St. Petersburg to nearly an hour and a half in stop-and-go congestion.

We had reservations for Craft, Tampa’s brand-new riverboat dinner cruise set to depart at 7:30 p.m. — and a friendly confirmation email reminding us that our purchase was nonrefundable. We’d been encouraged to arrive 45 minutes early, when we would have presumably been able to commence a leisurely boarding, river breeze in our hair, Champagne flute in hand.

Life had other plans. At 7:25 p.m., my dinner date and I swung our car into the Garrison Street parking lot, narrowly avoiding getting struck by an oncoming streetcar.

Following a quick security wand-down (the boat adheres to U.S. Coast Guard rules) and a $30 event-fueled parking fee (Tim McGraw was playing a show at nearby Amalie Arena), crew members greeted us with a quick photograph and a glass of bubbly before sending us on our way.

“Welcome to our maiden voyage!” they exclaimed as we rushed aboard.

Shortly after 7:30 p.m., we were off, out of the Ybor Turning Basin and into the sunset.

Described as a “culinary and cocktail river journey,” Craft debuted its inaugural dinner cruise on March 15. The multimillion-dollar project is the latest endeavor from Jill and Troy Manthey, who also run several other entertainment-on-the-water concepts, including Yacht StarShip, Pirate Water Taxi and the Bay Rocket.

Designed with European riverboats in mind, the 130-foot-long vessel boasts a sleek, white silhouette with less than 11 feet of vertical clearance — meaning it can comfortably drift beneath many of Tampa’s low-lying bridges. But this ship’s real appeal lies in the coupling of an elevated culinary program, contemporary aesthetic and craft cocktails.

A trip aboard Craft includes a two-hour cruise up and down the Hillsborough River and a three-course prix-fixe meal. To start, there are lunch, brunch and dinner trips on deck, but a happy hour option may soon be in the works.

Running any kind of marine operation comes with steep operating costs — including fuel, dock rental fees and staffing — and the experience here is priced accordingly. But it still comes with a good deal of sticker shock. For two people on a Friday evening, we paid $392.59 for the boat ride and the three-course dinner — not including gratuity or drinks.

I love a fancy boat ride as much as the next person, but the pricing gave me pause.

Would the experience be worth it?

Things were a lot smoother once we got on board.

We entered through the front of the boat, or bow, and were shown to our seats inside a narrow dining room, flanked by windows overlooking the water. Wood paneling combined with slight nautical touches lent the space a warm, industrial-chic vibe.

Servers clad in white collared shirts and gray aprons whisked back and forth between the tables, balancing martini coupes and taking orders. In an attempt to let the crew develop their sea legs, the boat wasn’t fully booked that evening, but the dining room still felt abuzz with excitement and curiosity.

Clutching our Champagne, we glided through Sparkman Channel at dusk, glitzy Harbour Island homes glowing in the evening light as a Maggie Rogers track played softly in the background. We let out a collective exhale as the chaos of the day faded away.

Over the course of the roughly two-hour cruise, the boat steered up the Hillsborough River, passing Riverwalk landmarks including the Tampa Convention Center, Armature Works and Rick’s on the River, before turning around and heading back.

Guests were encouraged to explore the boat. The Bow and Stern bar, beautifully designed and fashioned out of a vintage 1914 cruiser, provided additional seating in the rear for those looking for more of an al fresco experience.

Throughout the evening, the crew moved back and forth between the dining room, the bar and the kitchen, sometimes stepping out on the deck to alert passengers when their meals had been delivered. Guests roamed the boat taking photographs, while patrons inside chatted up their neighbors, much of the voyage illuminated by the lights of downtown Tampa.

Craft’s strongest selling point is its culinary program, and the menu here is a far cry from the goblets of white wine and dry chicken associated with most dinner cruises.

Designed by chef Allison Beasman (formerly of Edison: Food + Drink Lab), the list of contemporary New American dishes runs the gamut from a black grouper served with Little Neck clams and Pernod cream to a Wagyu coulotte with kabocha caramel and a Korean barbecue octopus. As part of the prix-fixe deal, guests are able to pick an appetizer, entree and dessert from a menu of roughly 13 different dishes.

Part of what makes the vessel stand out is the addition of an open kitchen with gas stoves, and the concept’s design allows guests to get a peek of the action if they’re on their way to the bathroom or the bar.

When it came time to order dinner, our server patiently guided us through the menu, pointing out the additional dishes we could choose if we wished to add a little something extra onto our prepaid meal. We opted for the olive oil-marinated sheep and goat’s milk cheese ($18), which was just as tasty as our server touted. It arrived in a rich red pepper-packed pisto, drizzled with a healthy glug of olive oil and served with crusty bread for dipping.

Dishes are made to order and don’t necessarily arrive at the same time as other passengers’ meals. Our appetizers showed up roughly 45 minutes into the trip, a delightful baby kale salad lightly dressed in a white balsamic vinaigrette that was toothsome with chicory and shaved carrots and plumped up with fried baby potatoes and a healthy shaving of ricotta salata. Also good was the hearty tomato bisque with roasted bone marrow and blackened cipollini onions.

For our entrees, a seared duck breast arrived fanned out over silky whipped potatoes and a creamy goat cheese fondue, framed by Brussels sprouts and fat wedges of roasted golden beets. Though the duck was cooked a little past the requested temperature, it was still delicious. A plate of sweet and sour braised short ribs packed powerhouse flavors that paired beautifully together, all served over a sweet and sticky coconut rice sidling bok choy and juicy tangerine segments.

For dessert, we paired a perfect few scoops of pistachio ice cream with a chocolate espresso dacquoise, an intensely rich and sweet layer cake featuring a tart blackberry curd and creamy dark chocolate ganache.

The fine print

The water was calm that night and the entire service appeared well-rehearsed — absent of any major hiccups and even graceful at moments. As far as I could tell, there were no seasick passengers or man-overboard scenarios, which felt like some kind of success, though I did wonder what type of balance or physical dexterity would be required to maneuver trays of wobbling martini glasses over stormier seas.

Though tiered pricing exists for Craft — for different seats, times of day or days of the week — there’s no overlooking that a trip aboard the vessel isn’t cheap.

With neither drinks nor gratuity included in the booking price, if you’re looking to enjoy the evening with a couple of libations, it’s going to cost you. The add-ons can feel excessive, from a $50 king crab leg tray to the preboarding photograph crew members try to sell you at the end of the night. A suggested gratuity is presented on your bill, based on the total sales tallied for the table that evening, including the cost of the original reservation.

Some changes are bound to be expected as the company assesses guest interest and feedback. Even after the first week, it appears some prices have been slightly adjusted. Dinner for two people seated in the dining room with window seats now comes to $369.89 after taxes and marine fees, while weekend brunches for the same seats start at $89.95 per person.

It’s hard to imagine making dining here a regular occurrence, but for a special occasion, an evening aboard Craft can be a real delight.

Next time, though, I’ll remember to leave myself plenty of time to get there.

For Craft reservations and information, go to crafttampa.com/ . The riverboat departs from the dock at 603 Channelside Drive, Tampa.

Wausau Eagles Club back serving free Easter dinner meals for community

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) - Over the past four years, the Wausau Eagles Club has held several drive-up dinners, garnering more attention with each passing event.

“It started out where we had only ten people that were allowed in the building total,” Wausau Eagles Club Auxiliary President Lisa Burger said. “They served I believe 800 that first year and we’ve been doing Christmas and Easter ever since.”

Now, their goal is to serve 1,200 meals, taking plenty of preparation. With nearly 20 volunteers, the operation is the definition of a team effort.

“You can see the pride in their faces when they talk,” Burger said. “It’s grown to be that even outside the Eagles, people know that there is the need.”

The Wausau Eagles Club is looking forward to continue lending a hand for years to come. To keep up with more events from the organization, click here .
