Ed Sheeran at MetLife Stadium is on as scheduled. Here's everything you need to know

5 minute read.

ed sheeran nyc tour

Ed Sheeran at MetLife Stadium is a go.

The Brit singer-songwriter's two shows, Saturday, June 10, and Sunday, June 11, will proceed according to schedule, according to MetLife Stadium, despite the air quality emergency caused by Canadian wild fires.

“The concerts remain on schedule for this weekend,” said the stadium in an advisory on Thursday, June 8. “We will continue to monitor the situation and will provide updates as needed.”

The low-pressure system causing southerly winds to push the smoke from forest fires in Quebec down to New Jersey and much of the Northeast was forecasted to move on Saturday, said John Cristantello, lead meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Brookhaven, New York.

The state's air quality began improving late Thursday morning after reaching hazardous conditions Wednesday from an unprecedented amount of smoke that descended on the region from the forest fires. Pollution levels were still very high midday Thursday, and the state was under a red alert.

The Sheeran shows are part of the North American leg of his “+ - = ÷ x Tour,” aka “The Mathematics Tour.” Khalid and Dylan are also on the bill of the in-the-round shows. Sheeran's set runs about two hours and 15 minutes, and he usually comes on about 8 p.m.

Look out on Friday, June 9, as Sheeran has been playing theaters before his stadium shows on the tour, although it's not known if the air quality emergency will hinder this — or if he planned to hit one in the Jersey area.

Sheeran played The Met in Philadelphia before his shows at Lincoln Financial Field in Philly.

“Playing theatres all summer the day before I do the big stadium shows,” said Sheeran on social media. “I love the contrast of playing an intimate venue then playing the next day to such big crowds, variety is the spice of life and all that. See ya in a city near you this summer.”

Tickets for both shows, starting at $75 before fees, are available via Ticketmaster .

Ed Sheeran  has announced details for the “- Tour” (pronounced “Subtract Tour”), a special run of dates set to take place in theaters and auditoriums in 14 cities across North America. The shows, mostly with singer-songwriter Ben Kweller in support, will take place in between dates on his massive stadium tour — titled  “+ – = ÷ x Tour” (pronounced “Mathematics Tour”) — which was announced last fall.

The newly announced tour supports Sheeran’s forthcoming new album “ –,” out May 5 via Atlantic Records. According to the announcement, “Written against a backdrop of grief and hope, Ed wrote and recorded the fourteen-track record with Aaron Dessner (of The National) in February last year after a series of hard-hitting events impacted his life.”

To coincide with the arrival of “ – “,  the all-new, four-part documentary “Ed Sheeran: The Sum of It All” will begin streaming on Disney+ starting May 3.

Sheeran has been in court in New York this week, testifying in the long-running copyright trial regarding alleged similarities between his song “Thinking Out Loud” and Marvin Gaye’s 1972 hit “Lets Get It on.”

Sheeran will begin the North American leg of his worldwide “+ – = ÷ x Tour,” hitting stadiums across the continent starting May 6 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX (full itinerary below).

Ed's playing some smaller theatre shows in the US this summer to play Subtract in full. Sign up for on-sale access before 11:59pm ET Sunday 30th April. Meanwhile, the musician is currently defending himself during an ongoing plagiarism trial  that sees him accused of copying  Marvin Gaye ’s ‘Let’s Get It On’ for his track ‘Thinking Out Loud’. This week,  lawyers claimed that Sheeran “confessed” to copying the track after mashing the two songs together during a live show .

Laughter reportedly broke out in the trail after the court was played an AI version of Marvin Gaye’s song ‘Let’s Get It On’ .

Elsehwere, The National ’s  Aaron Dessner has also defended working with Sheeran on his upcoming album ‘ – ’, saying that he’s “tired of the ‘what’s cool?’ debate” .

ED SHEERAN ANNOUNCES

(PRONOUNCED “THE MATHEMATICS TOUR”)

SATURDAY, AUGUST 12 AT U.S. BANK STADIUM

FIRST STATESIDE TREK IN NEARLY FIVE YEARS

GENERAL ON-SALE STARTS FRIDAY, OCTOBER 14TH AT 10AM CT

Multiple GRAMMY® Award-winning, global superstar Ed Sheeran has announced details for the North American leg of his “+ - = ÷ x Tour” (pronounced “The Mathematics Tour”), hitting stadiums across the continent for the first time since his history-making “Divide Tour” in 2018, which officially became the most-attended and highest-grossing tour of all time by its completion.  Main support on a majority of the dates comes from multi-platinum artist Khalid (May 6th-September 2nd) with rapper/singer-songwriter Russ rounding out the tour (September 9th-23rd); Dylan, Cat Burns, Maisie Peters, and Rosa Linn alternate as first of three. Sheeran recently wrapped the UK/European leg of the “+ - = ÷ x Tour,” performing in front of over 3 million people in 6 months and highlighted by a five-night stand at London’s Wembley Stadium.

To herald the news of his upcoming tour, Sheeran is set to make a pair of high profile, national television appearances.  The acclaimed singer-songwriter has a very special performance planned for CBS’ “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” on October 13th, followed by ABC’s “Good Morning America” on October 14th.

“+ - = ÷ x Tour” is the first major trek to support “=,” Sheeran’s latest full length album, which debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 upon its 2021 release, becoming his fourth consecutive album to top the chart.  The fourth installment of Sheeran’s symbol album series, “=” is highlighted by its GRAMMY®-nominated lead single “Bad Habits,” which was up for “Song of the Year” at the 64th Annual GRAMMY® Awards earlier this year, and its follow-up smash “Shivers.”

Ed Sheeran opening acts

Sheeran is treating fans this tour.

On select dates, the Ed Sheeran tour will bring along Khalid, Russ, Dylan, Rosa Linn, Cat Burns, and Maisie Peters for the ride.

For the uninitiated, here’s a quick intro to each artist.

Khalid is an R&B/pop singer with six Grammy nominations under his belt. He got his start on SoundCloud and quickly rose to prominence after his single “Location” charted at number two on the Billboard chart.

Russ , a New Jersey native, brings hip-hop to the tour. His most recent EP, 2021’s “Chomp 2,” received praise for its “dope moments and quality hip hop bars” from Raw Side Hip Hop .

Dylan , an English singer-songwriter, just dropped her debut mixtape, “The Greatest Thing I’ll Never Learn,” in October 2022. Prior to opening for Sheeran, she served as the support act for Tate McRae and Bastille.

Rosa Linn , 22, hails from Armenia and represented the country in the 2022 Eurovision contest. Although she didn’t win, her song “SNAP” went viral on TikTok and now boasts over 300 million streams on Spotify.

Cat Burns broke through in 2022. Her single “Go” exploded into the mainstream after a 2020 release. Women In Pop called her recently released six-track EP full of “warmth, emotion, heartbreak, delicious melodies (and) gorgeous harmonies.”

Maisie Peters just dropped her first studio album, “You Signed Up for This,” on Ed Sheeran’s Gingerbread Man Records label. Known for her soprano voice, the pop singer counts Taylor Swift and Lily Allen as significant influences.

Ed Sheeran new album

In 2021, Ed Sheeran released (=), his fifth studio album. The record spawned major hits “Bad Habits” and “Shivers,” the latter toppled the former from the top spot on the U.K. and Irish charts.

In their review, Rolling Stone argued that the new album signaled Sheeran’s transformation from a “sensitive superstar” to one that produces “songs with choruses meant to incite cell-phone-lit sing-alongs in stadiums.”

Following (=) ‘s major success, the “Game of Thrones” guest star/pop icon dropped several singles, including collaborations with artists like Taylor Swift on “The Joker and the Queen” and Elton John on “Merry Christmas.”

It’s rumored that Sheeran will deliver a sixth studio album in 2023, complete with ten “epic music videos,” according to thenews.com.

Although nothing has been confirmed, hopefully, we’ll find out whether the rumors are confirmed before the North American tour.

In the meantime, you can hear all of Ed Sheeran’s albums here .

The stars came out for Ed Sheeran ‘s SiriusXM show in Amagansett, New York, on Monday night.

Sheeran kicked off an hourlong set at 7 p.m., taking the stage inside a tented structure outside the popular venue following an introduction from SiriusXM’s president and chief content officer Scott Greenstein. The company announced the gig less than a month ago, billing it as an exclusive concert for SiriusXM subscribers and fans.

“We couldn’t be more excited that Ed Sheeran, one of the top artists in the world, will step away from his tour playing stadiums to present an intimate show for SiriusXM at Stephen Talkhouse, a truly iconic venue,” said Greenstein in a July 20 press release touting the show. “This will be a one-of-a-kind experience for the lucky fans in attendance and to our listeners nationwide.”

Brandi Carlile, Coldplay, Dave Matthews, The Killers and Mumford & Sons have previously headlined the show. For his outing, Sheeran delivered a setlist that included “Thinking Out Loud,” “Shape of You,” “Castle on the Hill,” “Don’t,” “You Need Me, I Don’t Need You,” “Bad Habits” and select tracks of his new album Subtract including “Eyes Closed.”

Judging by the action in the VIP section, the crowd loved it as McCartney was seen jamming out while Corden was spotted singing along to Sheeran’s hit songs. Also of note: Guests noshed on slices of pizza provided by new celeb-friendly Fini Pizza. The pizzeria, located on Main Street, took over the former space occupied by Astro’s Pizza earlier this summer and has quickly become a foodie destination, frequented by the likes of Jessica Seinfeld.

The concert will air on SiriusXM’s The Ed Sheeran Channel on Aug. 16 and will re-air throughout the week. The Sheeran channel launches Aug. 15 and runs through Aug. 21 on the SXM App and on channel 104. SiriusXM Hits 1 will stream the show on Sept. 1, and it will also become available on the SXM App.

After a 4.5hr drive to see the show we weren’t disappointed!

Lewis Capaldi was first up and as funny and great as ever. Had the crowd laughing.

The Darkness were not my thing but they engaged with one particular guy called “Rick” in the crowd, who also sang his heart out for an appreciative audience.

The main man Ed appeared on stage around 8.30pm with a huge smile on his face, to an immense welcome from the Ipswich crowd, he was born not too far away, so was nice to see him finish this huge 2 year world tour at home.

Also he gave hundreds of free tickets to the pupils of the school he attended when he lived there.

His vocals were simply incredible, loud, strong, smooth and steamy, just beautiful !!

Screen graphics and timings were perfect too.

His guitar playing was awesome to watch and I have no idea how he concentrates on so many things at once with the loop, that is pure talent and the build up and sound in some songs ie Eraser, Bloodstream and the awesome You need me,I don’t need you gave me goosebumps.

Ed was joined for Galway Girl by Beoga which was brilliant.

Special guest Stormzy for “Shape of You” was the icing on the cake and I’m so pleased I bought the tickets last year, they were worth every penny.

Only complaint was the rude and miserable guy behind the official merch counter!! Spending £50 on a hoodie for my daughter meant I had to save for it and it would have been nice to have had a “hello” a “thank-you” or any kind of a smile!!!

Luckily the bar staff were friendly, smiley and helpful as were the local people.

Would 100% recommend ED SHEERAN as someone to see live, he is INCREDIBLE.

Let me just start off by saying Ed Sheeran is an amazing performer and speaker. He is comedic and doesn't require thousands of lights and a massive stage to impress thousands. He stayed interactive with the crowd very well. This is my 3rd concert ever and it was both the best and worst I have ever.

Ed Sheeran did amazing, he isn't the issue. As people know in concerts you stand and dance to most songs and sit (under circumstances) when ballads are playing or the performer is speaking. So- I was standing during one of Ed Sheeran's many sings along/dancing songs. I am a 6 foot tall 13 years old there for my birthday. In the area, I was in many people asked me to sit while he talked which I happily obliged to then learning the rules.

It was all fine until one man yelled in a very rude/angry voice yelled at me (during a dancing song) "SIT DOWN IDIOT IN THE BLACK HAT." Which at the very moment I didn't recognize as myself until my father went to lash back (as any protective super concert dad would do). This is something I had never experienced. So for the rest of the concert, I sat having an emotional/mental breakdown.

I'm not sure if it was the music or the people that made me cry so much. This was an experience I will learn from. Unfortunately, it is (probably) because Ed Sheeran reins in a large age group as an audience. This means sometimes people will be cranky, rude, or just plain snarky.

I understand if someone handicapped asked me to sit because they couldn't stand. But this man that yelled at me was about 50 or younger. I hope he ended up enjoying his concert because by halfway through my whole 6' or taller family stood and danced. He sat and everyone around him was asking him to join.

Sorry for my rant. Ed Sheeran is an amazing performer. I just thought you should know that people that (I know) will be everywhere (and we cant do much about them). But it was rude.

Great show! I bought my wife and I tickets as a gift for her (she was a huge Ed Sheeran fan even before he was famous) and we had a great time. My wife had never been to the venue, and while I had been to shows at Consol Enery Center before this was the first show I saw there since it became PPG Paints Arena. Everything about the production and performances (lights, audio, visuals, crew, musicians etc) went off with nary a hitch and was executed in a very timely manner. Props to all involved.

James Blunt opened, and like many people there (as he joked) I only knew one of his songs: "You're Beautiful". He was funny, charismatic, a good showman, and a good sport. He put on a high quality emotion filled performance, and despite his music being on the sadder side still managed to pump everyone up for Ed Sheeran. "Don't Give Me Those Eyes" was a highlight. He hung out in the Captain Morgan lounge after his performance and invited anyone interested to come hang with him. I came in not really knowing who he was and left checking out his latest music and regretting not grabbing a beer with him.

Than Ed came out (my wife had a pinch me I'm dreaming moment). He was noticeably quieter and a bit more reserved than Blunt when addressing the audience, but quickly dove in. I was always aware Ed was a talented solo artist, but you really appreciate his talent on a different level when you actually hear him perform outside of a studio live with just him and a guitar. Most of his songs were studio quality. A few songs dipped in quality but for charming and understandable reasons like audience involvement and impressive sped-up improv (i.e. the "Don't" and "New Man" mashup). He played nearly all the songs my wife and I were looking for ("Perfect", "A-Team", "Galway Girl", "Nancy Mulligan", "Thinking Out Loud", etc.). Since this was the "Divide" tour he played almost every song off that album (but not all: no "Barcelona", "Bibia be ye ye", etc.) He also played a lot of his older songs, including an audience request for "Cold Coffee" (he stated it was the first time he performed it live since 2010-2011). I also liked how he put on a Pittsburgh Penguins jersey during his closing song "You Need Me and I Don't Need You".

TLDR it was one of the best shows I have seen.

S6 E4 Ed Sheeran Performs At Historic Meeting House In New York

ed sheeran nyc tour

At the historic meeting house of the New York Society for Ethical Culture on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, Ed Sheeran needed little more than his voice and a guitar to whip a crowd of 700 fervent fans into a frenzy of mass sing-a-longs or hush them into enraptured silence. The British star bounded effortlessly from the hip-hop infused pop of “You Need Me, I Don’t Need You” the single from his acclaimed debut album  + , to the traditional folk of the Irish traditional “The Parting Glass” and Grammy-nominated hit single, “The A Team.”

English sensation Ed Sheeran got an early start on his music career, singing in his church choir and learning the guitar at a young age. He released his first EP,  The Orange Room , in 2005 and honed his performance skills through a relentless tour schedule. In 2011, Sheeran gained mainstream attention when his self-released EP,  No. 5 Collaborations Project , reached the Number Two spot on iTunes. His full-length debut album,  + , was released in the UK the following year, where it went quadruple platinum and won two BRIT Awards. The album was released in the US in 2013 to similar success, reaching the Top 5 of the Billboard charts and receiving a Grammy nomination for Song of the Year. His sophomore album,  X  was the biggest and fastest selling album of 2014. It featured the back to back platinum singles “Sing” and “Don’t” and was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2015 Grammy Awards. In December 2015, the album’s third single “Thinking Out Loud,” which has been Sheeran’s most successful single to-date, was nominated for three Grammys, including Song of the Year and Record of the Year, at the 2016 Grammy Awards. Following X he released ÷ in 2017 and then No. 6 Collaborations Project in 2019.

The New York Society for Ethical Culture was founded in 1876 by Dr. Felix Adler with the mission of advancing social justice for all. In 1910, NYSEC’s Art Nouveau-style meeting house opened across the street from Central Park, next door to the Ethical Culture School it founded in 1878. The meeting house became the starting point for many significant projects and historic events, including the founding of the first free kindergarten in the US, the creation of the Visiting Nurse Service, and co-founding the NAACP and the American Civil Liberties Union. NYSEC and its historic meeting house continue to host hundreds of programs for social justice today. Photography courtesy of Taylor Hill for Artists Den Entertainment.

Billy Joel talks 100th MSG show, getting to 'hang out' with Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran

ed sheeran nyc tour

With his first new song in 17 years, a performance at the Grammy Awards and his last Madison Square Garden residency show approaching in July, Billy Joel has been unusually ubiquitous of late.

Ask him how he’s feeling after this thrust back into the spotlight and he laughs.

“A little overwhelmed. I’m not used to the whole megillah that comes with releasing a new record,” Joel says.

He’s talking about “ Turn the Lights Back On ,” the single released in January that was his first to hit the Billboard Hot 100 since 1997.

Along with those accomplishments, he’s winding down his record-setting run at Madison Square Garden , which began in January 2014 and will conclude July 25.

Even though Joel has played the storied New York arena close to 150 times in his six-decade career, his March 28 concert marked the 100 th show of his residency , a milestone commemorated onstage with pals Jerry Seinfeld and Sting.

That whole megillah is now known as "Billy Joel: The 100th – Live at Madison Square Garden," a two-hour event that will air at 9 p.m. (ET/PT) April 14 on CBS.

But even without a monthly appearance at The Garden, Joel will still continue to trot around the country, filling sold-out stadiums with his sometimes-acidic, sometimes-introspective, always-vivid anthems such as “Scenes From an Italian Restaurant,” “Pressure,” “Uptown Girl,” “My Life” and the immortal “Piano Man.”

Joel – laid back, self-deprecating and quick-witted – chatted with USA TODAY about singing with Sting , making mistakes and why he actually likes his new song.

Question: How have you felt these past few months with everything swirling around you?

Billy Joel: I forgot how much work it is. I used to do this on a regular basis: You go on the road, go back home and write, record the songs, then make the video, promote it, yadda, yadda, yadda. I hadn’t done it in so long. It’s head spinning and different from what I remember.

How was your Grammys experience? ( Joel performed “Turn the Lights Back On” and “You May Be Right” to close out the awards broadcast.)

That was a unique experience. I wasn’t a nominee, I was just there to play my song and there was a whole generation of musicians I wanted to meet.

Ed Sheeran , Taylor Swift , Olivia Rodrigo – a bunch of people I respect. I met them under completely different auspices. I just wanted to hang out.

You filmed the concert for the CBS special at the end of March. Did show 100 feel any different than the other 99?

Well, yeah because there were a bunch of cameras on stage! I’ve been playing (Madison Square Garden) since the ‘70s. The 100 just happened to be a round number and happened to coincide with a Garden show I was already doing.

What’s your history with Jerry Seinfeld, who was there for the banner-raising of your historic night?

I wasn’t aware he was going to be there until the last minute. They said, we’ll have a banner-raising thing and Jerry is gonna do it. I said, "Wow, great." He bought my old house in the Hamptons in 2000. We made a deal, no brokers, just us. He said, “How much?” and I said a number and he said, “OK.” It was really serendipitous. He’s a good guy, a fellow Long Islander. But also, Sting, he bought my apartment in New York City.

I sense a theme here.

I know. All of my real estate clients were at the show. It’s like Joel Realty.

You’re doing some stadium dates with Sting, but you also did a lot with Stevie Nicks last year and you have some with Rod Stewart this year, so what made Sting the right person to be part of this show?

I’ve known him quite a while, since he was in The Police. We became friends right away and I always admired his musicianship. We respect each other as musicians. It’s very easy for me to work with him. It doesn’t require a long rehearsal process. I hate rehearsal. I’m OK with making a mistake. A lot of the fun of it is in the spontaneity of the recovery. He and I have great bands, and if you’re working with good musicians it makes life so much easier. I’ve written songs with Sting in mind, like “Big Man on Mulberry Street,” which we do in this show.

You rarely play that song live.

It’s such a high key, but Sting has this wonderful tenor that he’s been able to maintain.

Probably from all of his yoga.

Or from that tantric stuff . He can hit those notes and nail them because it’s jazz. It was a lot of fun to do.

You also play (The Police hit) “Every Little Thing She Does is Magic” with him in this show and you came out for “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around" while on tour with Stevie. What do you enjoy about those duets?

I always enjoy mixing it up. God knows how many times I’ve done Billy Joel songs. That’s why I loved touring with Elton. I could play a lot of Elton John songs . Since we’ve been at The Garden, all kinds of people dropped in – Miley Cyrus , Paul Simon , John Fogerty , Bruce Springsteen , Olivia Rodrigo , it goes on and on. And the band gets to have fun.

Let’s talk about “Turn the Lights Back On,” specifically the video. What did you think when you were first approached with, hey, let’s use artificial intelligence to morph you into ‘70s-era Billy and then the ‘80s and ‘90s?

I was open to it . I’m not a big fan of doing videos. I don’t like them. I didn’t sign on as an actor – I’m a piano player. I’m not comfortable in front of the camera. When I’m singing, I think I look like Cary Grant and then when I see (the video) I go, oh, it’s me. (Song co-writer) Freddy Wexler had the idea, and I thought, I don’t have to be an actor, this is great.

What did you think of the final result?

I liked it. I said, "Hey, I remember that guy!" I don’t know how they do it technically, but it was fascinating. It was sort of an out of body experience, like wow, that was cool.

Has it been weird being back on the charts almost 50 years after you first did so with “Piano Man”?

It’s a totally different world. I don’t how the charts work. There’s the streaming, the lite rock, the AC, AOL, AOR, rock, urban, hits, I don’t know what it is anymore and I don’t keep up with it. But I didn’t hate the song. Back in the day I’d record a song and come back into the control room and I hear my voice. I never liked my voice and wanted to sound like someone other than me. I’ve found out that’s how a lot of recording artists think. Everyone is trying to copy Ray Charles or Mick Jagger. But my first reaction to hearing the song was, “I don’t hate it” because my normal go-to is, “Jeez, it’s me.” Now when I sing (1974's) “The Entertainer” (with the lyrics) “I won’t be here in another year if I don’t stay on the charts” and “You heard my latest record, it’s been on the radio.” Normally, I shake my head “no” when I sing those lines. Not any more.

“As a child, I learned to dream about my future in the enchanted silence of these hills,” Bocelli shared in the press release. “Then life made that dream happen.”

“Today, 30 years later, I can only imagine celebrating my career and my life, its strength, and its wondrous beauty here at Teatro del Silenzio, surrounded by such wonderful artists and friends. I want to thank everyone who helped my childhood dreams come true with an unforgettable concert.”

Mercury Studios

Along with the three day event, Bocelli’s concert will be documented into a concert film produced by Mercury Studios, Maverick, Impact Productions, and CITYSOUND & Events. Grammy-nominee and Emmy Award-winner Sam Wrench ( Taylor Swift - The Eras Tour ) will direct the upcoming production.

“You can’t get much more cinematic than Andrea Bocelli against the Tuscan landscape,” Wrench said in the press release. “I’m incredibly excited to bring this once in a lifetime concert to cinemas around the world with his unique voice, this world class team and enviable list of special guests.”

Sean Paul

Back in 2002, Sean Paul ’s “Gimme the Light” reached No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 , kicking off one of the most prolific crossover careers in dancehall history. Two decades later, Ice Spice , one of the hottest names in contemporary hip-hop, announced her own “Gimme the Light”-sampling single during her 2024 Coachella performance — just one example of how seminal Sean Paul’s contributions to the fabric of American pop culture have become.

How ‘Bob Marley: One Love’ Brought the 1976 Smile Jamaica Concert and ‘Exodus’ Recording Sessions…

“I feel that the people are ready for me again,” Paul recently told the Associated Press . And he’s correct: His last two studio albums – 2021’s Live n Livin (No. 9) and 2022’s Grammy-nominated Scorcha (No. 6) — both reached the top 10 on Top Reggae Albums, becoming his seventh and eighth consecutive titles to hit that region.

With timeless classics like “Get Busy,” “Temperature,” “We Be Burnin” and the Beyoncé -assisted “Baby Boy” to his name, Sean Paul is armed with an arsenal of smash hits that few can rival – and he intends to re-explore his sprawling catalog on his new tour. Far from a mere nostalgia grab, the Greatest Tour also grants Paul the opportunity to bring his recent Latin music collaborations to life across the U.S. So far in the 2020s, the dancehall legend has already joined forces with major Latin stars such as Wisin & Yandel (“No Sales de Mi Cabeza”), Manuel Turizo (“Dem Time Deh”), Feid (“Niña Bonita”) and Billboard 200 chart-topper Karol G (“Kármika”).

“I’ve been doing a lot of different types of genres, stepping into the Latin world and stuff like that,” he says. “I’m just ready to connect back with everybody who loves dancehall, and the people who are being drawn to the new music that I’ve been doing lately in the States.”

In an entertaining conversation with Billboard , Sean Paul details his new tour, explains his controversial stance on the Jada Kingdom-Stefflon Don clash , ponders the dynamic between dancehall, afrobeats, and reggaeton, and recalls his earliest musical memories.

1. Where are you in the world right now? How’s the day treating you?

Sean Paul: I’m good! I’m in my studio Downstairs in my house and I just put my kids to watch [the 2024 Netflix docuseries] Moses — because I’ve been reading them Moses, s o I’m trying to get them interested more.

2. In just over a month, you’re kicking off your Greatest Tour. What are you most excited about for this specific tour?

I’ve been touring the world for a long time… it’s been quite a long time [since I’ve hit] the States in terms of a long tour. I’ve done [one-off] dates here and there, but the last time I did a long tour like this [was] probably 10 years ago. I’m very excited about connecting back with people.

3. What are your three favorite songs to perform live and why?

That would definitely be “Temperature,” “Get Busy,” and probably “Gimme the Light” — because it didn’t hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts, but it was the [biggest] video that I had back in the day for a minute. “Get Busy” was my first [Hot 100] No. 1 and “Temperature” was my second No. 1. It’s always fun to perform those.

4. Which cities are your favorite to perform in? Are there any cities or venues that surprised you with how hype they were?

But I haven’t been to Chicago or Atlanta in a long time. I’m looking forward to [being] back in those states because I used to have fun there. I have friends that I’ve seen in a minute, so it’s good to connect. I don’t think I’ve been [in Atlanta] since COVID, so that’s gonna be a good vibe.

5. What’s the first concert or tour you remember attending?

Young MC! [He] came to Jamaica and he was in the Guinness Book of World Records for the most words in a rap song, and that night Papa San was also there and he was in the Guinness Book of World Records for the most words in a song. So, we all thought they was gonna clash, because [Jamaica] had a thing – we still do – with clashing, and I thought that was gonna happen. We was like, “Yo, what’s going down?” I remember the girls shouting, “Marvin! Marvin!” because Young MC’s name was Marvin. They didn’t clash, but I had a great time. It was in National Arena in Jamaica.

The next one I went to was a group called 2 in a Room. [ Sings “Wiggle it, just a little bit.” ]  My aunt had a sound system, so she was a person that was chaperoning them around, and all of her equipment was being used at the show. So those two first come to mind in terms of big concerts that I’ve been to.

6. Who are your biggest influences in terms of live performance and crafting your stage show?

One of my biggest influences from my genre is Capleton . He’s a very enigmatic. He’s full of energy all the time, no matter how old or how much time passes, the dude is amazing to me and I think he should be revered much more than he is. [He’s] someone with a message, but he also keeps the crowd very entertained.

7. You’ve done a lot of crossover collaborations for the Latin market recently and you even picked up a crossover artist of the year nomination at the 2023 Billboard Latin Music Awards. What drew you to that market and those sounds?

Reggaetón is very close to what dancehall has been for years. I like to say that reggae is the father of the music, and hip-hop and dancehall are brothers. It’s a vibe.

8. Why do you think cross-genre collaborations are important?

The music is here to connect people. It’s just another form of reaching out to another side that’s maybe not familiar with your music or wants to see more of you.

I always learn from my collabs, man. There’s no time that I don’t learn. I might go and collab and I’m doing what I do, and then all of a sudden, the producer or the artist himself might step in and be like, “Yo, do a harmony right here!” And I’m like, “Oh, I didn’t ever think of doing something like that.” It may be influenced from their style of music, maybe R&B, maybe hip hop, maybe reggaetón, even Afrobeats. I learn something every time and I take that with me, so it helps my songwriting.

9. We’ve been seeing a lot of Afrobeats and dancehall crossovers recently. What do you think is the potential of that musical dynamic and is there anything you think that two genres and industries can learn from one another?

Then, years pass by, and I’m an artist and I go to Africa, and they are so appreciative of what we brought to the table. It’s been a symbiotic relationship back and forth over the years. We’re using drums from the sound that’s been Afro music, people like Fela Kuti and all of these great musicians, and we’re producing it the way we hear it [and] feel it. In Afrobeats [now], they have taken the hint from how we produce and done their own thing with it.

It goes to show you, no matter how far away you are, there are still things about the culture that are important, that are upheld and that continue through life. The connection of blood, the connection of family through culture has been an important thing — and it lives in the music and it affects us symbiotically.

10. In 2022, you dropped Scorcha , which earned you your 10 th Grammy nomination. Where do you personally rank that album in your discography?

I think albums define artists in a certain time period, so I don’t judge my own work in the respect of how well they do for sales or how well they do [in terms of] impact on the on the community. I judge it as, me then, right? So we had just been in COVID [with] the lockdowns and I  did two albums that year. I feel very proud of the work. Live n Livin [released on March 12, 20221] was a collaborative effort of me and about 19 other Jamaican artists, which I was very proud of. I hadn’t seen anybody in my genre do so much collabs, with each other, which I think has been needed.

11. Do you still buy albums yourself? What’s the first album you remember buying and falling in love with?

Oh man, I’m streaming now! [ Laughs. ] I’m in the modern day! It’s weird to me, because I liked owning the vinyl. I liked being able to just look at one picture all day long and imagine everything about Donna Summer that I could ever imagine. There was a lot to the imagination at that time and it was very magical. Nowadays, [with] streaming, I don’t own the album, but I stream songs for sure.

Of course, my parents’ collection was there, so I mentioned Donna Summer , I can mention The Beatles, Neil Diamond — this is my mom’s music and influences on me — Paul Simon and Garfunkel . But the first one I bought was [ Breakin’ ] , to tell you the truth. Hip-hop was just becoming the “in thing” in my generation. It was around from before and we heard songs, but now, I was identifying stars and the break dancing was kicking off, so [ Breakin’ ] was something that I wanted to own.

It’s funny what happens when you’re coming up as a young kid, [buying] an album like that and then [learning] something from it. I didn’t know of Chaka Khan before that album. And then I found out more about Chaka Khan, and I was like, “Yo!” I got an introduction to her music through that album.

My mom did buy me Steel Pulse[’s Earth Crisis ] that same year as well — she’s someone who liked their music because it was kind of reggae, with a little difference. It had different melodies and harmonies, and what they spoke about, she was really into that.

12. Who from the younger generation do you think is leading dancehall right now or charting a new path forward for the genre?

I know I wasn’t around when rock’n’roll started, but the raw energy that I feel when I listened to the early rock’n’roll — Chuck Berry and all of that – it’s the same feeling I get [with these younger dancehall artists]. It’s not overproduced at all. Big up to the younger dancehall artists. Skillibeng doing his thing. Big up to Popcaan, he’s a little older generation than them, but [he’s] somebody who still is making music that is making an impact here for me.

13. You had some controversial thoughts on the Jada Kingdom and Stefflon Don clash from earlier this year. Some people noted how global audiences really tuned in and paid attention to that clash, which brought more eyes to the contemporary dance hall scene. What purpose do you think clashes can serve in this particular era of dancehall?

I’m against the clashing right now. I’ve been for quite some time — reason being, I’ve seen negative impacts in the community when it comes to people being childish about supporting their artists. Clashing does bring about attention, but does it bring important lessons? [That’s] what I think music is supposed to be.

When I look [at] Marley’s career, people like Jimmy Cliff, Third World, Black Guru — this is where our music comes from. We are like hip-hop in a way, but we also have that root of the Burning Spear and all these people who spoke culture to us and fought Apartheid, as I said before. I just don’t want to see my people feel the need to clash talents. In that respect, I think our talents can be used more towards a greater upliftment of everybody.

When I spoke up about Jada and Steff, it’s because I know those two people. I also believe that women’s energy should reflect a different type of energy than a man. Yes, you can be a strong woman, you can be a leader, you can be someone that rebels against something that’s wrong. But the energy, and where they’re putting it, I just don’t find it attractive for women to be to be doing that to me.

[There was] a lot of backlash. I got a lot of people saying, “Oh, so men can do it and women can’t do it?” And I’ve always said in my genre, the mandem shouldn’t be clashing. I was answering back everybody I could [on Instagram]. I’m not the type of vocal artist like that all the time, but when I do believe in something, I’m gonna say it.

I just believe that those two women especially have a lot more talent and a far way to go in the business than to cement themselves to be known more as a clash artist. I’ve seen that happen with some of the males too. Some of the dudes come out, they’re clashing, and then you’re just known as a clash artist. I haven’t heard anything else from them. Not a song to entertain, not a song to educate, not a song to uplift, just a song to be derogatory about the other artists. I think we do that too much in this genre, also in hip-hop.

I’m tired of it. I’m tired of childish behavior. I just think that we could spend our time doing way better things as a genre, especially coming from the root of reggae and what that’s been in the climate of music in the world.

14. What do you love most about where dancehall is right now, and what do you wish was different?

For me, it’s a spirit. It’s an ancient spirit that comes through the music. When Sly Dunbar was making the music in the late 80s [and] early 90s, I felt this Afrocentric feeling. It felt third world, [like] this is my identity, and it still has that feeling and it’s giving that feeling to other genres as well.

I’m proud of the fact that there are more producers and more artists. One thing that’s uneasy to see is that there’s a lot of people who just come up and they don’t go through a gauntlet like I did or artists before me, where you have to stay [in the studio] all day long sitting down, waiting for your turn to be recorded. It’s all on your phone right now or your laptop [with FruityLoops] and everything’s a lot easier. Sometimes when you don’t go through the fire, you don’t get to the point where you’re diamond.

15. What made it a fire or a gauntlet?

Back in the day, having to wait in those lines, having to take the criticism from the producer himself — because nowadays the kid could just do his own thing and put his song out. Soulja Boy broke from that scenario. But the discipline ain’t there to me, and that discipline is a deepness that can help you to have more longevity, which I think I’ve had, and so I give thanks to everybody who, behind the scenes, criticized me, pointed the finger at me and told me, “Go do better.”

16. What business advice would you give younger artists who are striving to have a career with as much longevity as yours?

I’ve never been [a good businessman] — I just feel what my crowd needs from me. I feel what works and what doesn’t. I don’t produce a hit song every day! For every one song you hear, I may have 25 songs that you will never hear. It’s about the work ethic, keeping your ears to the ground where the genre is concerned, but also keeping in tune with your crowd.

A lot of ladies gave me the ideas to be like, “Yo, they like hearing this from me!” It’s a lot of gangsterism in music and hardcore stuff. While I don’t think I’m a soft artist, I do think that I give some form of romance to the ladies, and some form of closeness that you know that that they need from the music.

You may be an artist that doesn’t connect in that way. I’m not saying everybody has to do that type of music, but connect to whatever it is from you that people are connecting with. Pay attention to that.

17. How do you think mentorship can be most effective in dancehall right now?

I think what I’m doing has been helping a few artists. I help to mentor people like Chi Ching Ching and a young cat Quan-Dajai [Henriques], who [was] in the Bob Marley movie.  I produced their music right now. I think it’s important because just by being in the studio one day and telling them a story about something I’ve seen in the business or some crazy stuff that happened behind the scenes with the red tape, the lawyers and other producers —  they learn from me.

18. What’s the last song you listened to?

Some music that I just did in LA last week. One’s called “Ginger,” nice vibe. It’s kind of like a blend of Afrobeat and dancehall music. It’s an Afrobeat producer and artist I worked with, so I’m really feeling that one. It sounds like now. I listen to a lot of my music because I have a lot that hasn’t even come out yet.

I have listened to the verse that Kendrick [Lamar] spit. I’m more hearing the verse than the full song, but he did step on some toes there! So, some clashing a gwan again. [ Laughs. ] For me, all those artists have proven themselves to be great. I don’t need [a clash] to know that they are great. I might revere Kendrick’s lyrics more than Drake’s, but I still think Drake is a talented person to be where he is at this point.

19. For you, what makes the perfect dancehall song?

It definitely has to do with the beat a lot. A lot . you could have a very great reggae song that’s an acoustic – there have been acoustic dancehall songs, for sure —  but the main driving force of our music is the riddim. It’s the drum and the bass. That’s what’s changed a lot with the younger [producers] nowadays, who don’t have that gauntlet to [and] don’t have the guidance of other people. It’s a lot more chord-oriented and keyboard-oriented, and it don’t have the crazy bass. I miss that. There’s a few songs that that still reflect that now, and those are the ones I enjoy more.

20. What’s your all-time Carnival anthem?

When I was a kid, you know, soca music comes from Trinidad and that’s the carnival music here. As a kid, I didn’t love it as much. I have five aunties, my father’s sisters, they loved it and I didn’t like it.

But I’ve grown up now and I have a wife, so she’s immersed in Carnival. She makes costumes, so she’s giving me good insight as to what music is great. I think that one of my favorite anthems is a song from 2005, [ sings Shurwayne Winchester’s “Dead or Alive”]. Also, “Like a Boss” by Machel Montano was probably just the baddest song. He’s like challenging me to party more! Those two songs for me are Carnival anthems.
