Castaway Cay: A guide to Disney Cruise Line's private island

A visit to Castaway Cay is a highlight of any Disney cruise to the Bahamas or Caribbean. The island is the exclusive beach-day playground for Disney Cruise Line guests, and cruisers can enjoy a fun, hassle-free day of sunbathing and water sports at the island.

Your day on Castaway Cay is idyllic because you have to make very few arrangements. You can walk off the ship and head right to the beach. Beach chairs, umbrellas, towels and a delicious lunch are all provided to you. Your biggest decisions will be if you want to book a shore excursion, which will leave from a convenient location just steps from the ship, and which beach you and your family want to check out first.

The island is themed around a shipwreck, as if you are the castaways and your mates have used the crates and driftwood that have washed ashore to build the island's structures. You'll also find many of your Disney friends ashore in their best beach attire, so the cruise ship magic continues on island.

Castaway Cay, like all things Disney, focuses on family fun, but it still reserves some on-island spots for drop-off kids activities supervised by the ship's youth staff and adults-only relaxation. Teens get their own secret hangout.

Where is Castaway Cay?

Disney Cruise Line's Castaway Cay is located in the Bahamas, near Great Abaco island. It's 225 nautical miles from Port Canaveral, home port of several Disney cruise ships. Disney leases the island from the Bahamian government.

The 1,000-acre island is roughly 3 miles long by 2 miles wide, but only 55 acres are developed. You can get a great view of the undeveloped areas of the island from the observation tower on the way to Serenity Bay, the adults-only beach.

All Disney Cruise Line ships except Disney Wonder will visit Castaway Cay. It's a staple on Bahamas and Caribbean itineraries, which is where the majority of Disney ships travel.

How do you get to and around Castaway Cay?

Castaway Cay was the first cruise line private island to feature a pier where ships can dock. One ship at a time can visit Castaway Cay, and passengers can walk straight off the ship and onto the island.

It's a decent walk from the ship to the first section of beach. To accommodate all cruisers, Disney runs a tram from the end of the pier to stops by Scuttle's Cove and Pelican Point, on either end of the main family beach, and from the Pelican Point area to Serenity Bay.

Note that the Serenity Bay tram is separate from the main tram between the ship and the main beaches. A kind driver saved me from going in circles because I thought the Serenity Bay tram would take me all the way back to the pier.

Paved paths throughout the island will take you anywhere you want to go. I walked all the way to Serenity Bay down the bike trail (which doubles as an air strip), and it's not a short walk. You can take a detour to loop around the paved nature trail that leads to the observation tower.

Disney also provides beach strollers and wheelchairs for passenger use.

What are the Castaway Cay beaches?

Castaway Cay's main strip of beach is sheltered by a rocky breakwater, making the water calm and perfect for swimmers of all ages. The beach is divided into three sections: Boat Beach, where you'll find water sports rentals, and two family beaches, including a beach area exclusive to cabana guests.

An adults-only beach, Serenity Bay, is on the adjacent side of the island, open to the sea, and separate from the family beach.

Castaway Cay's three main beaches are:

Castaway Cay family beaches

Castaway's family beaches are divided by Pelican Point, a rocky breakwater, where the Heads Up Bar sits. Both beaches have loungers, low-to-the-ground upright beach chairs and beach umbrellas that are free to use. Many adults like to drag the upright chairs down to the water's edge and hang out there, watching their kids frolic in the waves.

Both beaches have lifeguards and racks of life jackets available for guest use.

The closest family beach to the ship is near the Scuttle's Cove kids area and tram stop. It has a swim-out floating ropes course. The farther beach is closer to the Pelican Point tram stop. Its highlight is the Pelican Plunge floating water play area, with a splash area and dump bucket, water cannons and two slides (a tube slide and an open slide).

Lines can get long for the slide, and smaller sliders need to wear life jackets. The tube slide is much faster and shorter than the open slide. Be ready to get water up your nose, as it's a drop from the end of the slide into the water.

For the best choice of lounge space, you'll want to get off the ship early and trek to the farther ends of the beach. It was hard to find available chairs when we moved mid-afternoon from one side of the family beach to the other to use the slides.

The farthest end of the beach is lined with cabanas and reserved for cabana guests.

The first beach you come to on your way from the ship is Boat Beach. This is where you'll find all the larger water sports gear available to rent, such as water bikes and kayaks. (A separate shack rents out snorkel gear).

No one sunbathes on Boat Beach.

Serenity Bay

The adults-only Serenity Bay is exclusive to cruisers ages 18+. The beach is on the other side of the island from the family beaches and a long trek (or tram ride) from the Pelican Point area.

The beach itself has the same lounge chairs, low upright chairs and umbrellas as the other Castaway Cay beaches. There are cabanas for rent here, too; they lurk behind the main beach and share the sand and sea with regular guests.

Because Serenity Bay is a long haul from the Pelican Point tram stop area, it has its own facilities: barbecue pavilion, bathrooms, bar, float rental and massage hut.

I visited Serenity Bay at lunchtime, and the beach was not crowded at all. Plenty of loungers were unclaimed — likely because the majority of Disney cruisers were spending time together as families. Also, the water was not as clear or calm on this beach because it does not have a breakwater to protect it from the waves, so some adults might prefer the family beach area for swimming.

What are the best Castaway Cay things to do?

Splashing and sunbathing are not nearly the only things to do at Castaway Cay. Its small developed area has a lot going on, both on land and in the lagoon.

Designated areas on both sides of the family beaches are reserved for snorkeling. The main snorkeling lagoon is between Boat Beach and the family beach, conveniently located by Gil's Fins and Boats, which dispenses snorkel gear, as well as tubes and floats for rent. Rumor has it that you can find a shipwreck and even some hidden Mickeys, as well as interesting sea creatures.

You can also pick up snorkels, floats and tubes at Flippers and Floats (located between the two halves of the family beach) and The Windsock Hut at Serenity Bay (float rentals only). If you rent an inner tube, don't let it out of your grasp. I saw several of these floating out past the ropes marking the end of the swimming area. The crew must have to come out on boats at the end of the day to round them all up!

The floating ropes course and Pelican Plunge water slides are also fun diversions for families and gives you something to do besides swimming that doesn't involve spending money.

Scuttle's Cove is the beachside extension of the shipboard Oceaneer Club. Parents and caregivers can drop off their younger children to play in the sand under youth staff supervision in order to snag some time at Serenity Bay or in the snorkel lagoon. As with the onboard kids club, the service is complimentary.

Scuttle's Cove include the Monstro Point whale dig site (where kids can play archeologist and dig in the sand for bones), a small splash pad and an area for sand games.

Between the Scuttle's Cove and Pelican Point tram stops, In-Da-Shade Games offers basketball, ping pong, billiards, giant checkers, foosball and table games in an open-air wooden pavilion.

Over by the Pelican Point area, a beach sports area offers tetherball, volleyball and soccer, and the Spring-A-Leak wet play area is fun for littles who want to get wet without the waves. A bike rental station rents bikes for kids and grownups; I didn't see trail-a-bikes, but they did have adult bikes with child seats on the back. One-hour bike rentals cost $15 (for ages 3+).

The full bike path, from the rental area to Serenity Bay and around the loop to the observation tower is 1.5 miles. If you prefer to run, doing the trail out to the adult beach and back again (including a second tower loop) is 3 miles or 5K.

Disney used to host an official race called the Castaway Cay 5K. Currently, it's not offered as a group activity, but you can do it on your own, on your honor, and pick up a medal back at the bike rental booth. If you're not racing, the observation tower is a nice stop for views of the island.

A few water stations are set out along the race course.

Teens have their own secret hangout called The Hideout, tucked away behind the beach sports and bike rental area.

Adults can book 50-minute solo or couples' massages at the massage cabana on the adults beach.

If you're interested in water sports, Disney offers a selection of rentals on Boat Beach.

Rentals include:

• AquaTrike, $30 for 30 minutes
• Chiliboats Waterbikes, $30 for 30 minutes (ages 14+)
• Float or tube, $15 for the day
• Paddle boat, $20 for 30 minutes for 2-seater boats or $25 for a 4-seater
• Sea kayak, $20 for 30 minutes on a single kayak (ages 14-plus) or $25 for a double kayak
• Snorkel equipment, $22 (ages 5 to 9) or $38 (ages 10-plus) for the day
• Stand-up paddle board, $20 for 30 minutes (ages 14-plus)

The shore excursions desk assured me that it's easy to rent water sports gear on the island if you're not sure you want to commit in advance.

If you're an active family, consider the Castaway Cay Getaway Package. The three-in-one rental package includes snorkel equipment and a float or inner-tube for the day, plus a one-hour bicycle rental. The package is valued at $52 for little kids or $68 for anyone ages 10 and up, but costs $30 or $50, respectively, saving you $18 to $22.

The Castaway Cay Getaway Package is only available for booking online pre-cruise or aboard the ship; you cannot book it once on the island.

Can I meet Disney characters on Castaway Cay?

A favorite Disney cruise pastime is meeting Mickey Mouse and friends, princesses, superheroes and pirates, and you have those opportunities on Castaway Cay. The island has numerous spots set up for photos, and throughout the day, various characters will make an appearance in their beachwear to pose for photos. On my cruise these included Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Captain Jack Sparrow.

Check your Navigator app to find out which character will be at which station at what time. The post office, Marge's Barges, Mt. Rustmore and the beach across from Scuttle's Cove are popular photo spots for the characters. If you want the beach spots, plan to line up and get your photos early before your family gets all wet and sandy.

What are the excursions at Castaway Cay?

If you're looking for a little more than just a beach day, you can book a handful of Castaway Cay excursions. The available tours are predominantly guided water-based activities taking place in or around the island's waters.

On my cruise, the following tours were available:

• Banana boat ride, $45 for 30 minutes (ages 10-plus) or $39 (ages 8 to 9)
• Castaway Cay Fishing Adventure, $219 for a 3-hour tour (ages 8-plus)
• Castaway Ray's Stingray Adventure, $59 for a 1-hour tour ($48 for ages 5 to 9)
• Castaway Snorkel By Boat Adventure, $95 for a 3-hour tour ($79 for ages 6 to 9)
• Glass Bottom Boat Scenic Voyage, $59 for a 1-hour tour ($39 for kids under age 9)
• Parasailing, $140 for 1 hour (ages 8-plus)
• Walking and Kayak Nature Adventure, $73 for 3.5 hours (age 10-plus)

In addition, the Extreme Getaway Package combines a one-hour stingray adventure with snorkel equipment, bicycle and float or inner-tube rentals. The cost is $95 for kids and adults ages 10 and up or $73 for kids ages 5 to 9.

Many of the boat-based excursions (such as parasailing and fishing trips) depart from the Marge's Barges and Sea Charters dock at the end of the cruise pier. The stingray adventure meets at the Castaway Ray's Stingray Adventure hut at the end of Boat Beach farthest from the ship; the protected stingray lagoon is just offshore.

Does Castaway Cay offer cabanas to rent?

Yes, Castaway Cay cabanas are available to rent both on the family beach and at Serenity Bay. From what I saw, the family beach cabanas could be a great way to have a more relaxing, less crowded experience on Castaway Cay. The Serenity Bay cabanas seemed less of an upgrade, given that the beach was empty and all the services are so close.

Family Beach cabanas

Castaway Cay offers 20 cabanas on the farthest end of the family beaches, just around the corner from Serenity Bay. The cabanas line a stretch of beach that is roped off, so regular cruisers cannot go there. They are numbered 1 to 21 as there is no cabana #13.

The 325-square-foot cabanas are tucked away under the palm trees. They are outfitted with indoor seating, a ceiling fan, drinks refrigerator, safe, plush towels and cooling face cloths, magazines to read and complimentary sunscreen. Portable cribs are available on request for guests with babies.

Fresh fruit and light snacks are provided, as are unlimited soda and bottled water. Servers will come around to take alcoholic drink orders. You can press a button in your cabana to call them if you don't see anyone and want to order a drink or get your soda, water or snacks restocked.

Outside the cabana, guests have access to lounge chairs, a hammock and a freshwater shower. The cabana rental comes with access to snorkel equipment, sand toys and floats or inner tubes, plus a one-hour bike rental.

Cabanas are identical with two exceptions. Cabana #16 is wheelchair accessible; it cannot be booked online. Cabana #21 is called the Grand Family Cabana, and it's oversized at 650 square feet.

On my cruise, cabanas cost $797.50 for an eight-hour rental for up to six people. You could add up to four more people, for a total of 10, for $56 additional per person. For groups larger than six people, children under 3 are not charged; however, they count toward the maximum number of people allowed on the rental.

The Grand Family Cabana cost $1,127.50 for up to 10 people and could accommodate up to 16, with each additional guest charged $56 per person.

Serenity Bay cabanas

The six Serenity Bay cabanas are only available to guests ages 18 and up. They're numbered 22 through 27 and are located behind the adults-only beach and its rows of lounge chairs.

The cabanas are the same size and come with nearly the same inclusions as the family beach cabanas. The difference is that snorkel equipment is not provided because there is no snorkeling lagoon at Serenity Bay.

Despite being the same size, Serenity Bay cabanas are priced for just four guests at $493.90 for the day; additional guests up to 10 total will pay $56 each over the base rate.

Is food included on  Castaway Cay?

Yes, multiple venues serve a complimentary barbecue lunch on Castaway Cay. The main venues are Cookie's BBQ and Cookie's Too BBQ, but a small lunch buffet is also available by the Serenity Bay tram stop so adults on that beach don't have to trek back to the Pelican Point area to eat.

All three venues serve the same food, buffet style, in open-sided pavilions with outdoor picnic tables, some shaded, for eating. Lunch is typically served from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The main event is all kinds of grilled meat: burgers and hot dogs, Cajun-spiced chicken, salmon and barbecue brisket and pork. Vegetarian chili and veggie burgers are also available (the latter on request).

Sides include cole slaw, potato salad, corn and bean salad, macaroni salad, chips, corn on the cob and corn bread. Dessert options include a variety of fruit, amazing chocolate chip cookies, chocolate and strawberry-cheesecake mini cakes and soft-serve ice cream. Pro tip: Take the cookies to the soft-serve machine to create a DIY ice cream sandwich.

Self-serve soft drink machines dispense complimentary soda, water, sports drinks, iced tea and lemonade.

Lines can get long, so plan accordingly, especially if you have hot and hungry little ones in tow.

Are there bars on Castaway Cay?

Even this family-friendly island has plenty of bars serving extra-fee drinks and frozen concoctions. You'll find them throughout the island. You'll have to pay a la carte for drinks purchased at Castaway Cay's bar because Disney Cruise Line does not offer an all-inclusive drink package .

The Conched Out Bar and Sand Bar are the main beachside bars along the family beach, serving beer, cocktails and frozen drinks. The Heads Up Bar serves the same, but is located atop Pelican Point, the rocky breakwater between the two halves of the family beach. Its patio is occasionally the setting for on-island weddings.

You can also find stands selling smoothies and drinks outside the lunch pavilions. I saw many cruisers carrying drinks in souvenir coconut-shaped cups.

Right by the Pelican Point tram stop, Summertime Freeze serves up smoothies and alcoholic frozen drinks in "Frozen"-themed souvenir cups.

Out at Serenity Bay, the Castaway Air Bar, housed in what looks to be an airplane hangar, keeps adults refreshed throughout their beach day. It's got a wooden deck with comfortable seating for anyone who wants to kick back with a drink without getting sandy.

Is there shopping on Castway Cay?

Castaway Cay has multiple shops selling everything from Castaway Cay exclusive Disney merchandise, local Bahamian crafts and souvenirs and beach items you might have forgotten (hats, sunscreen, sunglasses, sand toys, etc.).

She Sells Sea Shells and Everything Else by the Scuttle's Cove tram stop and Buy the Seashore by Pelican Point are your go-tos for Disney merch and sundries. Midway between the two are a couple of Bahamian retail outlets grouped together.

The only accepted method of payment is your Key to the World cruise ship card, even in the Bahamian-run shops.

If you're a Disney fan hoping to buy some swag not found anywhere else, you'll be happy browsing the Castaway Cay shops. Prices on beach items, however, are incredibly marked up, so if you forget to bring toys or a hat, try to pick them up at an earlier port or go without.

Can I get married on Castaway Cay?

Disney's Fairy Tale Weddings department can absolutely help couples plan a wedding on Castaway Cay during cruise itineraries that visit the island. (Weddings can also be held on board the ship.) You can choose from ceremony venues on the beach or at Wedding Pointe (the deck that juts out over the water by the Heads Up Bar).

Note that most Castaway Cay weddings take place in the morning, and the reception will be held back on board. In case of inclement weather or the ship's failure to dock at the island, your wedding might need to be rescheduled to an onboard location.

Also, Castaway Cay weddings are not legal weddings. You will need to file paperwork and get legally married in your home state. Your island ceremony will be purely symbolic.

What additional amenities will I find?

Crew members are on hand at several stations to hand out towels as you're leaving the ship. Towel return bins are located throughout the island, but I didn't see anywhere by the beaches to swap out a wet towel for a dry one.

Bathrooms and beach showers are found throughout the island, as are plenty of garbage and recycling bins.

A First Aid station is located by Scuttle's Cove. Island information kiosks are available at both Scuttle's Cove and Pelican Point tram stop areas.

Beach wheelchairs and strollers are available to borrow.

Disney's Wi-Fi is not available off the ship at Castaway Cay, so if you wish to use your phone, you'll need to have a plan that works in the Bahamas.

Can you stay overnight on Castaway Cay?

Some Disney employees do live on Castaway Cay to take care of the island. However, passengers do not have the opportunity to spend the night.

If you love Castaway Cay, look for "double dip" itineraries that feature two calls at Castaway Cay. Even if the visits are on consecutive days, you still must reboard the ship in the afternoon and cannot stay late on the island.

What's the typical weather like ?

You can find great weather in the Bahamas year-round. Average high temperatures are in the low 80s in winter and low 90s in summer. The rainiest months are June, August and September. The Bahamas is subject to hurricane season, which runs June through November. The peak time for tropical storms and hurricanes is August through October.

That means it will likely be either pleasant or hot during your visit to Castaway Cay. Make use of those complimentary beach umbrellas and shaded trams when journeying out to Serenity Bay. Apply and reapply sunscreen (choose the reef-safe brands) if you're spending the day on the beach or biking around the island. It's easy to burn.

It's also smart to stay hydrated during your day on island. Mix up your water intake with some of the sports drinks at the soda machines to keep your electrolytes up.

Castaway Cay has a pier, so your visit likely won't be canceled due to wind that might make tendering unwise. However, if conditions are too dangerous for the captain to safely dock, your call might be canceled or rescheduled.

Disney Cruise Line currently has a fleet of five ships. And while itineraries can change year to year, most Disney cruises sailing the Bahamas and Caribbean will include a stop at Castaway Cay. Depending on your ship’s specific itinerary, you can expect to have around eight hours to explore the island during a typical stop. 

Visiting Castaway Cay is easy, as guests can simply walk off the ship and onto the island without the need for a tender boat. Once on land, towels and lounge chairs are complimentary (though chairs are available on a first-come, first-served basis so you may want to get there early to snag a prime spot). For those with accessibility concerns, all-terrain wheelchairs are available.

Traveling around the island is a breeze thanks to its tram system that makes several stops near activities, shops, and beaches.

Passports are not needed to visit the island, but you will need to have your stateroom key on hand to return to the ship. You can also use your Key To The World card to purchase drinks and souvenirs on the island.

Disney Cruise Lines

Castaway Cay offers a range of included activities, plus a few special options that require an extra fee. Located off the family beach, In Da Shade Game Pavilion offers — you guessed it — shaded game areas complete with basketball, billiards, and ping pong, plus beach sports like soccer and volleyball.

For fitness enthusiasts, one of the most beloved complimentary activities is the Castaway Cay 5k. Ideal for runners and walkers alike, this is an on-your-own race along winding tropical paths. It isn’t an organized competition, but you will earn an exclusive medal when you finish.

Castaway Ray’s Stingray Adventure is another Disney Cruise Line favorite. This hour-long experience (available for a fee) invites explorers to get up close and personal with 60 stingrays as you feed, pet, and snorkel with these fascinating sea creatures. For an additional fee, you can also book an excursion, including parasailing, sailing, and fishing charters, or rent watercraft.

As a Disney parks fanatic, I love the island’s unique snorkeling experience. Suitable for all levels, the 22-acre snorkeling lagoon offers two trails, including one featuring sunken characters and abandoned theme park ride vehicles, like a submarine from the now-defunct 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Submarine Voyage attraction. Equipment rentals are available from Gil’s Fin and Boats and Flippers and Floats. If you want to book several activities, Castaway Cay offers bundle packages that can provide significant savings.

If you’re on the hunt for souvenirs, Castaway Cay’s shops offer beach staples, exclusive Castaway Cay merchandise, and even goods with local flair. Plus, merchandise can be sent directly to your stateroom for the most convenient shopping experience.  

For a more luxurious visit, the island offers private cabana rentals; this experience comes with unlimited soda and bottled water, fresh fruit and snacks, sunscreen, and more. Adults can even indulge in a massage (for an extra fee) in a cabana on Serenity Bay. 

 Dining on Castaway Cay 

Dining is included during your visit to Castaway Cay, and Cookie’s BBQ and Cookie’s Too serve as the island’s two main dining venues. Located near each of the family beaches, these eateries serve up summertime favorites like cheeseburgers, barbecued chicken, fresh salads, and fruit beneath shady pavilions. Disney Cruise Line’s iconic soft serve is also free-flowing here. Serenity Bay BBQ serves similar fare on the adults-only stretch of the island.

Many guests get off the ship and head straight to the island’s two expansive family beaches. My personal favorite is home to Pelican Plunge, a floating waterslide complex that you swim up to. Both beaches offer drink service and are within easy walking distance to dining and shops.

Parents and kids alike will be delighted to know that the island operates youth clubs just like onboard the ships. Kids ages 3-12 can enjoy Scuttle’s Cove, a secure and supervised children's activity area offering sand castle building, scavenger hunts, and more. Kids must be signed up with the onboard youth club before they visit, and admission is complimentary and offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Island youngsters will especially love Monstro Point, a play area that looks like a giant whale bone excavation site.

Teens ages 14-17 can enjoy their own slice of paradise at the Hideout, while toddlers can splash around at Spring-a-Leak, a splash pad with water features.

Arriving at Castaway Cay

Castaway Cay was the first of the cruise line private islands where the ship could dock directly on the shore. As a result, since guests don’t need to ride a tender to the island, getting to and from the beach is about as easy as it gets. 

Typically, the all-ashore announcement comes between 8 AM and 9 AM, with Castaway Cay 5K and shore excursion participants usually allowed to disembark first. After that, cruisers are free to get on and off the ship as much or as little as they’d like until it’s time to go.  

With a little bit of planning, you can even enjoy a sneak peek of Castaway Cay from the comfort of the ship. For an especially memorable morning, book an exterior stateroom or have breakfast on the starboard side of your Disney cruise ship. As this is the side of the boat that looks out over Castaway Cay, you’ll have sweeping views of the island as the ship comes in to dock and when leaving at the end of the day. 

Getting Around Castaway Cay

You have a few different options for getting around Castaway Cay, and two of them won’t cost you a thing. A complimentary tram is available between the dock and the Castaway Family Beach, as well as another between the family area and Serenity Bay on the far side of the island. Or, if you’d rather get your steps in after all that soft serve, Serenity Bay is just a well-marked, 20-minute walk away. 

Alternatively, if you don’t mind paying extra for a bit of two-wheeled adventure, you can also rent a bike to get around. Bike rentals cost $13 per hour on the island, with bicycles available in a variety of sizes, and include a helmet.

Honestly, since Disney provides most of the beach necessities like lounge chairs and towels, you don’t need to bring too many things for your day at Castaway Cay besides a few essentials. Along with your Key to the World Card and passport or photo ID, be sure to pack your beach bag with things like sunscreen (you can buy some in the shops on the island, but it’s expensive), sunglasses, a swimsuit coverup and a good book. Since this adults-only beach is further from the dock, the competition for a good seat isn’t as stiff. However, things can still get pretty busy, and if you don’t claim a spot early, you could be left out of the shade. Keep in mind that this beachy barbeque is only served for a limited time, running from 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM. The water is calm, warm, and beautiful. The sand is incredibly soft. In other words, it’s paradise!

Family Beach has plenty of chairs and room to spread out, but you should get there early if you want the best spot.

• Castaway Cay Tips : You can buy sand toys on the island, but we recommend bringing your own to save money . Also, be advised that you will not be permitted to take seashells from the Castaway Cay beaches.

11. Everyone should try snorkeling 

Snorkeling Lagoon is the perfect spot for snorkelers of all skill levels. Novices can follow the Discover Trail, and experienced snorkelers can try the Explorer Trail. You’ll encounter sunken ships, fascinating fish, and underwater artifacts. You can even find an underwater hidden Captain Mickey if you look close enough!

Snorkeling is free if you have your own gear. But if you need to rent snorkeling equipment, there is a small fee.

12. Try parasailing if you’re feeling adventurous

Parasailing is another great Castaway Cay activity. Once you have received the necessary safety instruction, you will launch 600 to 800 feet above the water and look down on your massive Disney cruise ship. It is an exhilarating and memorable experience, and the views are spectacular!

As of 2022, parasailing will cost you $129.00 per person (age eight and up) for the hour.

13. Bike rentals are available

Rent a bike and explore Castaway Cay’s meandering paths and tropical grounds. It’s a great way to sightsee and experience the island’s beauty.

As of 2022, bicycle rentals are $13.00 per person (all ages).

• Castaway Cay Tips : Take your bike ride in the morning because the afternoons can get hot, hot, hot!

14. Other things are also available to rent

In addition to snorkel gear and bicycles, guests can rent inner tubes, paddleboards, kayaks, fins, aqua trikes, and other water equipment. Prices vary.

• Castaway Cay Tips : The Guided Watercraft Ski Adventure is the only way to rent jet skis on Castaway Cay. This 1-hour guided excursion costs $183 and is open to guests aged 8 and up.

15. Try the specialty drinks

Disney cruise ships and Castaway Cay provide complimentary sodas and water, but you must pay more for one of the island’s specialty drinks. It’s still worth it. There are refreshing and cooling cocktails available if you are 21+.

Disney sells a tropical drink called “Konk Kooler,” a pina colada made with light and dark rum and coconut cream. The “Pelican Mule” features fresh fruit, pineapple vodka, and ginger beer. It takes the Moscow Mule to a new level.

In addition, Castaway Cay offers non-alcoholic specialty drinks and smoothies such as “Castaway Crush,”  which comes in festive sippers that resemble Olaf and Sven from “Frozen.”

• Castaway Cay Tips : You can get free water at the soda stations and throughout the island, so there’s no need to pay extra for bottled water.

16. Bring your camera

Castaway Cay will be one of the highlights of your Disney cruise. You will encounter countless photo and video opportunities as you explore the island with your family.

One of the most Instagram-worthy and Facebook-famous spots to snap a picture is “Mount Rustmore,” four giant metal buoys painted like Mickey Mouse, Pluto, Donald Ducky, and Goofy.

Plenty of other spots around the island allow you to capture a family picture with your Disney Cruise ship in the background.  And of course, there are plenty of places to get a a stunning shot of crystal waters, shimmering beach sand, and cotton-like clouds.  Be sure to bring your camera and be ready to capture all the magic!

17. Head to Serenity Bay for some adult time

Castaway Cay’s Serenity Bay is a special area for adults over 18. There is something magical about this beach, which is quiet and has water that seems bluer than the actual sky. The Serenity Bay BBQ restaurant and bar is located in this adults-only area.

• Castaway Cay Tips : Disney Cast Members will provide beach towels as you exit the cruise ship, so you won’t need to bring your own.

18. Get an open-air massage

Enjoy a relaxing open-air massage in a private cabana. You can hear the crashing waves and feel the tropical breeze as you experience true body bliss.

19. Rent a cabana

Castaway Cay private cabana rentals tend to book up very quickly (unless you’re a Concierge Guest or Pearl/Platinum Castaway Club Member ), but they’re simply gorgeous.

All-day cabana rentals include luxurious chaise lounge chairs, hammock, freshwater shower, fresh fruit, snacks, unlimited bottled water and soda, snorkeling equipment, floats, bike rentals, sand toys, sunscreen, and a dedicated Cabana host.

• Serenity Bay Beach Cabana – $399 (4 guests with a maximum of 10 guests)
• Family Beach Cabana – $599 (6 guests with a maximum of 10 guests)

20. Take the plunge at Pelican Plunge

Pelican Plunge is a 2,400-square-foot floating platform and water slide park. You must be at least 38″ tall to ride one of the three Pelican Plunge water slides. Those between 38″ and 48″ tall can ride but must wear a life vest.

21. Bring toddlers to the Spring-a-Leak splash pad

Castaway Cay’s Spring-a-Leak water play area is a joy for toddlers and preschoolers. However, there are a few rules, including no swallowing fountain water, and children under 12 must have adult supervision.

Admission to Spring-a-Leak is free.

• Castaway Cay Tips : There are complimentary strollers, wagons, and wheelchairs on the island, so don’t bring a stroller.

22. Get personal with stingrays

Castaway Ray’s Stingray Adventure is a paid activity that is quite popular (and educational). Here you will learn about stingrays, feed them, and even pet them!. The excursion takes about 90 minutes and is suitable for adults and kids ages five and over.

As of 2022, Castaway Ray’s Stingray Adventure costs $56.00 (ages ten and up) or $45.00 (ages 5 to 9).

• Castaway Cay Tips : Avoid booking excursions for the middle of the day. There will be a break in the flow of the day, and your children will not want to leave the water slides and sandcastles.

23. Escape the sun “In Da Shade”

There’s a section of Castaway Cay called In Da Shade Game Pavillion. It’s a shaded roof structure where you can play ping pong, chess, checkers, shuffleboard, and basketball with your family and other cruise passengers. It’s the best place to be on a hot or rainy day!

They usually have a Free Throw Challenge for cruise-goers around noon. Don’t miss it!

• Castaway Cay Tips : The sun can get pretty intense. Don’t forget your sunblock!

24. Drop off the kids at Scuttle’s Cove

Scuttle’s Cove is a fun kids club that provides a safe environment for your children when your ship comes ashore at Castaway Cay.

Once you drop off the little ones at Scuttle’s Cove, head to the adults-only Serenity Bay to enjoy a delicious specialty drink and tranquil beach experience.

From arts and crafts to supervised play, your kids will have a blast at Scuttle’s Cove while you get to relax and recharge. It’s just another way Disney proves itself to be the best cruise line for children .

25. Looks for Disney character meet & greets

There will be character appearances throughout the day to take pictures with guests. These are excellent opportunities to get character photos, as lines are much shorter than those on the ship.

26. Join the dance party with Mickey, Minnie, & Pluto

Mickey, Minnie, and Pluto get together for a dance party near Cookie’s BBQ. Kids of all ages are welcome to join the fun!

27. Enjoy the live music

You can usually see and hear a live band in the gazebo. Grab a table under an umbrella, relax, and watch the performance.

Disney cruises are a great way to enjoy time with your family and friends. You get to spend time together on the ship, but you also get to explore different ports of call.

I only book a Disney cruise if it's going to the company's private island, Castaway Cay

Cruise bookings are predicted to reach record highs this year, but not all itineraries are created equally — especially if you're looking to sail with Disney Cruise Line.

Over the past decade, I've taken eight Disney cruises with my family and friends. When I book, I always make sure Disney's private island in the Bahamas, Castaway Cay, is on the port of call.

Here's why you might want to do the same.

I love that the ship docks right at the island, so there are no tender ships involved

One of the biggest perks of Castaway Cay is that the ship docks right at the island.

Some other cruise line's private islands, like Norwegian's Great Stirrup Cay, don't have a dock, so cruisers must take tender ships (small boats) from the cruise ship to the island.

I hate taking tender ships, which can feel like a bit of a time sink, so this is a big bonus to me.

Getting around the island is easy with the complimentary tram

Castaway Cay is about 1,000 acres — though not all of it's developed — so it can take a while to talk to and from the ship to different spots on the island.

Fortunately, the island has a complimentary tram that I always use to get around the island.

The tram takes cruisers from a station near the ship to two other tram stops for the family beaches, and one tram stop at the adults-only beach .

This makes getting around the island with all of my beach gear easy.

Speaking of gear, at Castaway Cay, cruisegoers can borrow free towels as soon as they get off of the ship. There are plenty of towel-return stations around the island, so I also never have to carry wet, sandy towels back on the ship.

I always stop to see the Disney characters in their cute beachwear

I enjoy seeing the Disney characters on the ship, but love seeing Mickey and his pals even more at Castaway Cay.

Characters usually meet in the morning from around 9 a.m. until 11 a.m., but exact times can always be found on the Disney Cruise Line app.

The best part about seeing the characters is that the lines to take pictures with them are never long. On a recent sailing, I saw Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Goofy, and Pluto all in 30 minutes. That would never happen in a Disney park.

And if you're a fellow character hunter like me, Mickey and the gang all have Castaway Cay exclusive outfits, which are adorable and make for great family photos.

I always take advantage of every chance to hang out at the adults-only beach

One thing I love about Disney Cruise Line and Castaway Cay is that there are plenty of adults-only spaces where kids are strictly not allowed. On the island, that spot is Serenity Bay Beach.

This peaceful chair-lined beach is a quiet spot away from the family beach, where I can sit back and enjoy the view or take a chair down to the water and let the waves crash over me.

Plus, just off Serenity Bay Beach is a fun beachside bar serving up drinks and snacks.

There's also the adults-only lunch spot where I always enjoy a beachside barbecue. My favorite things on the lunch menu are the ribs and macaroni salad .

Before returning to the ship, I send a postcard from the island and check out the special merchandise

I always make a point to stop in at the various shops near the family beach to see the Castaway Cay merchandise. On a recent trip, the shops had everything from spirit jerseys and T-shirts to Christmas ornaments and swimsuits.

And, before I head back to the ship, I stop at the Castaway Cay post office to send postcards back home.

The postcards I use can be found in the desk drawer of Disney Cruise Line staterooms, and are free to take. If you don't want to send the cute postcards off, you can also keep them as souvenirs.

Lighthouse Point Disney Cruise Line Private Island: Opening Date & First Sailings, Details

Disney Cruise Line’s new private island destination is Lighthouse Point, located on Eleuthera in the Bahamas. This post covers everything we know about DCL’s counterpart to Castaway Cay, including the opening date, when preview & inaugural sailings to Lighthouse Point will happen, plus full details & concept art. ( Updated November 4, 2023 .)

Created in close collaboration with local artists and advisors, Disney Cruise Line’s vibrant island retreat at Lighthouse Point will be a unique celebration of Bahamian culture brought to life with the quality and service of a Disney vacation.

Keep reading to discover all the latest details about this relaxing beach escape designed with families in mind, infused with the color and energy of Bahamian artistry, and developed with a commitment to conservation at its core.

When Disney Cruise Line guests arrive at Lighthouse Point, they’ll be greeted by distinctive, sweeping architecture in bright, saturated hues. This style was inspired by nature and created in partnership between Walt Disney Imagineering and local artists.

The curvilinear buildings will at first appear as Bahamian shells scattered along the shoreline. Upon closer inspection, guests will discover artistic expressions of the native flora and fauna of The Bahamas and the pageantry and history of Junkanoo parades. Throughout the destination, references to playful folklore characters will evoke the warmth and charm of the local culture.

Respect for the environment is at the heart of the design at Lighthouse Point. At least 90 percent of the destination’s electricity needs will be met by an onsite solar array, the pier was designed to avoid the need for dredging and elevated walkways will help limit impact on the landscape.

Let’s start with a first look at the arrival point, Mabrika Cove, with brand-new concept art released by Disney Cruise Line in November 2023.

“Mabrika” means “welcome” in Taino, the language of the Lucayans, who are considered the indigenous people of The Bahamas. While the language is no longer used, a few words remain – one of them being “Mabrika.” At this colorful arrival point, guests will immediately experience the warmth of Bahamian culture.

The Goombay Cultural Center (pictured below) will embody the essence of “Junkanoo,” a Bahamian festival filled with joyous music and vibrant parades that will come to life in many ways across Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point. Goombay is one of the traditional music styles of The Bahamas, involving singing, dancing and drumming.

The brilliantly colored cultural pavilion and its Junkanoo-inspired arch will invite guests to embrace the traditions of The Bahamas, along with the sights, sounds and spirit of the country’s signature festival.

There will be plenty of family entertainment in store at Triton’s Trumpet Stage. And fun fact: The gazebo’s name is inspired by one of the stunning natural wonders found among the Bahamian beaches – a large, spiral seashell commonly called “Triton’s Trumpet.” And for you Disney fans, if Triton sounds familiar, you might recognize it as the name of the mighty king from the beloved Disney animated classic “The Little Mermaid.”

Of course, we must mention the shopping opportunities! Treasures of Eleuthera will be the retail shop featuring locally made gifts and artisan crafts. What I really love is how the shop will spotlight Bahamian artists through an array of unique items that families will be able to bring home with them as a special keepsake.

And now, the question you might have been asking … is there going to be an adults-only space on the island? The answer is yes! I’m delighted to share that Serenity Bay will be a relaxing retreat exclusively for adults 18 years of age and older. For those of you who have sailed with Disney Cruise Line before, you might recognize Serenity Bay as a must-visit location on Disney Castaway Cay! At Disney Lookout Cay, Serenity Bay will feature a tranquil beach experience with a dining area and private cabanas available for reservation.

Disney Cruise Line’s visitors to Lighthouse Point will have the opportunity to be surrounded by the wonders of nature and get a glimpse into the efforts taking place to conserve wildlife and their unique island habitats.

At Lighthouse Point, families will enjoy a day of fun in the sun as they relax on pristine beaches, embark on active adventures and discover authentic Bahamian storytelling alongside favorite Disney characters. As with DCL’s other private island, Castaway Cay, Lighthouse Point will offer activities and areas for every age group.

Families can relax and play along white sandy beaches and turquoise waters at the expansive family beach on the east side of the Lighthouse Point, which will be centrally located near market-style dining, recreation and other amenities.

A Bahamian art and culture pavilion featuring special programs and local artists will provide DCL visitors to Lighthouse Point opportunities to learn and celebrate the traditions and natural beauty of The Bahamas.

Lighthouse Point’s interactive family water play area will include two slides, water drums, fountains and more. This play area will also feature a dedicated space for toddlers.

North of the family area will be Lighthouse Point’s adult beach. This stretch of sun-drenched serenity will offer Disney Cruise Line guests a dedicated dining area for convenient access to food and drinks throughout the day, plus six private cabanas available by reservation.

Children ages 3 to 12 will splash and play at a kids’ club under the care of Disney Cruise Line counselors. The kids’ club will offer a splash pad inspired by favorite undersea creatures from “The Little Mermaid,” plenty of shade, as well as a dedicated dining area.

Set away from the activity of the main family area, a peaceful beach along Lighthouse Point’s southwestern shore will be lined with 20 premium family cabanas available for DCL guests to rent, including four double cabanas that accommodate larger groups and offer massage services.

Additional recreational activities will be available for guests of all ages, including a covered gaming pavilion, volleyball court, gaga ball pit, watercraft and bicycle rentals, nature trails for hiking and biking, and more. New Port Adventures developed in partnership with local tour operators will take guests beyond Lighthouse Point to explore the rich culture and breathtaking beauty of Eleuthera.

Lighthouse Point is being thoughtfully designed to provide a hassle-free experience for families, including complimentary beach essentials (towels, chairs and umbrellas and lunch), and tram transportation.

First Sailings to Lighthouse Point Private Island

In June 2024, Disney Cruise Line will debut its new private island destination, Lighthouse Point, on Eleuthera in the Bahamas. Cruises aboard the Disney Magic from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, will visit this vibrant beach retreat designed with families in mind, infused with the color and energy of Bahamian artistry, and developed with sustainability and conservation at its core.

A three-night preview cruise on the Disney Magic from Fort Lauderdale is scheduled for June 6, 2024 and will feature a sneak peek of Lighthouse Point with limited access to some areas. Throughout Summer 2024, Lighthouse Point will be a featured stop on select three-, four- and five-night sailings to The Bahamas and Caribbean on the Disney Magic out of Fort Lauderdale. These South Florida-based itineraries will vary stops between Lighthouse Point and Castaway Cay, with five special sailings including both Disney Cruise Line island destinations.

A 7-night inaugural cruise to Lighthouse Point aboard the Disney Fantasy from Port Canaveral, Florida will occur on June 8, 2024. This ultimate Disney Cruise Line island destination itinerary will feature not one, but two stops at Lighthouse Point … and that’s not all! One day of sun-drenched serenity at Castaway Cay also awaits your family on this once-in-a-lifetime sailing.

One special 10-night Southern Caribbean sailing aboard the Disney Fantasy will give your family another opportunity to visit Lighthouse Point with additional visits to the islands of Antigua, St. Lucia, Dominica, Tortola and Castaway Cay.

In terms of commentary, I don’t have a lot to add. The concept art makes this look really nice, like a cross between Castaway Cay and Aulani. We love both Castaway Cay and Aulani, and I’m sure this will be awesome. Having the private island lean more towards authenticity is great, even if I do enjoy the Imagineered vibe of Castaway Cay. (That reminds me a bit of Typhoon Lagoon, whereas I suspect this will not.)

All in all, we expect Lighthouse Point to be a great destination for Disney Cruise Line guests. Based on the description, it sounds like DCL and Imagineering have learned lessons from what worked and didn’t with Castaway Cay, and this is essentially the next generation of that. It appears that practical improvements have been made, giving Lighthouse Point a greater sense of fun and luxuriousness, along with the increased emphasis on authenticity. That’s just my impression based on the concept art and press release, though.

I stopped paying close attention to the Lighthouse Point saga a while ago, but have nevertheless been expecting an update on this for the last couple of years . You might recall that ex-Imagineer Joe Rohde was the face of the Lighthouse Point project when it was first announced almost 4 years ago.

Renowned for his culturally-respectful work on Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Aulani Resort & Spa in Hawaii, Villages Natures in Paris, and a variety of other independent projects, Joe Rohde was unquestionably Disney’s best ambassador when it comes to conservation and projects that highlight cultures.

When Lighthouse Point was announced, Joe Rohde shared how he was embarking on an in-depth cultural tour of the Bahamas meeting with local artists and cultural experts. He explored cultural sites across New Providence and Eleuthera, from Junkanoo shacks to noted art galleries, gathering samples, hearing from locals, and determining the best approach for telling their stories.

If anyone could “sell” a project like this to conservation groups or those otherwise opposed or on the fence, Joe Rohde is that person. He has an effortless way of passionately speaking about pretty much anything, doing so in an earnest and engaging way. He comes across as genuine and easy to trust. Unlike some stuffed shirt, if he says Disney will focus on culture and conservation, you believe him. Or at least, you want to believe him .

At that time, Lighthouse Point was a controversial project that was still awaiting an Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Management Plan, along with approval by the Government of The Bahamas and public consultation. There was a lot of backlash pre-pandemic, but the plan was to open Lighthouse Point by last year or this year. Obviously, construction delays were an inevitability with the border closures and cruise industry essentially pausing for over a year.

There was also Joe Rohde’s “retirement” in late 2020. At that point, all of the design work and assessments would’ve been completed, but it seemed like Rohde was still important as the face of the project–just as he had been with Aulani until (and even after) its opening. That along with everything else led us to wonder whether Disney Cruise Line had abandoned Lighthouse Point.

Disney Cruise Line aggressively proceeding with its fleet expansion (not to mention the surprise acquisition of another partially-completed ship) made it likely that Lighthouse Point was going forward. Still, we hadn’t heard anything about it and were surprised when no updates were offered at the most recent D23 Expo.

Ultimately, Lighthouse Point looks like it’ll be a fantastic destination for Disney Cruise Line guests. The environmental issues it poses do give me pause, and I hope Disney wasn’t just paying face to these issues in order to secure approval. While the company’s track record with Aulani is good, this is a bit different in nature. Hopefully Disney is sincere in its statements that Lighthouse Point will be minimally disruptive to the natural environment and that the island destination will be used in an environmentally-responsible way.

I have tremendous respect for Joe Rohde and enjoy everything he’s designed so I’m sure this will be wonderful—but I love Castaway Cay (and it’s heavy Imagineering) so much that I am just not excited about it’s alternative. I assume we will eventually get there on an itinerary that visits both islands, but in my heart of hearts, I’d rather double dip at CC.

The only thing that really surprised me was that they didn’t build way more cabanas. I think at minimum, even if they ran out of coastline, they could have gotten away with a second row “obstructed view” that cost slightly less and still printed money on them. I guess I should be congratulating Disney on the decision not to sacrifice more shoreline for many so they can squeeze out an extra (estimated) $3000/cabana per week.

I’m still dreaming they’ll build an Aulani-type resort in the Caribbean for us non-cruisers!

I have mixed thoughts on this, which probably reflect my overall ambivalence about Caribbean cruising in general. Part of me has an aversion to the concept of “traveling” to a place that’s innately fairly artificial. On future sailings that will no doubt visit both private islands, the idea of a guest saying they “went to the Bahamas” seems somewhat dubious since they will have never left the Disney bubble.

On the other hand, I fully understand that the areas around most “real” Caribbean cruise ports are often crudely commercial and don’t reflect the people, culture, beauty, or history of those islands (imagine a tour of US national parks where your only activity is stopping to shop, eat, and ride aerial tramways in gateway towns like Estes Park, Gatlinburg, or Springdale). And stepping ashore with thousands of other cruisers doesn’t exactly enhance the ambience or authenticity. Thinking about Nassau specifically, the cruise port-adjacent zone is tacky/industrial, whereas excursions to Atlantis or Blue Lagoon island are basically just upcharged versions of Castaway Cay.

Now of course I get the irony of griping about artifice on a Disney blog site, and I did enjoy most aspects of my one and only voyage on DCL. But leaning into suspended disbelief within the spectacularly imaginineered pretenses of the theme parks just feels different to me than sailing hundreds of miles to a place where you’re really not “there.”

What I don’t understand is at Lighthouse Point you can rent a Cabana are they letting people stay on the island? I can’t imagine renting for the few hours you get to stay like at Castaway.

We are planning to sail in July 24 so maybe we will get lucky and get to go to Lighthouse Point. It looks really relaxing

Is the plan for DCL to replace Castaway Cay entirely with Lighthouse Point? If not, has there been talk about certain sailings including Lighthouse in lieu of or in addition to Castaway?

They need the second private island with the growing fleet. I have no clue if certain itineraries will include both stops, but I’m guessing so at some point (albeit maybe not in 2024). That would be a popular itinerary for DCL diehards.

We are taking the plunge and giving DCL a try this coming December, so this won’t be available yet. Oh well. It looks cool, and I’ll be curious to hear about it. I had no idea they were even close to completing this.

NEWS: New Details Announced for Disney’s New Island Destination Lookout Cay

Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point is Disney Cruise Line’s newest island destination that will welcome guests in the summer of 2024. Disney Cruise Line has released more details about the island! Learn more below.

I’m excited to share new details on some of the exciting places you’ll find at Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point when it debuts in summer 2024!

Disney Lookout Cay is Disney Cruise Line’s newest, one-of-a-kind retreat on the island of Eleuthera in The Bahamas. As soon as guests step foot on this breathtaking island destination, they will discover a celebration of Bahamian storytelling, artistry and culture.

Let’s start with a first look at the arrival point, Mabrika Cove .

“Mabrika” means “welcome” in Taino, the language of the Lucayans, who are considered the indigenous people of The Bahamas. While the language is no longer used, a few words remain – one of them being “Mabrika.” At this colorful arrival point, guests will immediately experience the warmth of Bahamian culture.

This next space is guaranteed to be the most festive on the island! The Goombay Cultural Center will embody the essence of “Junkanoo,” a Bahamian festival filled with joyous music and vibrant parades that will come to life in many ways across Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point. Goombay is one of the traditional music styles of The Bahamas, involving singing, dancing and drumming. The brilliantly colored cultural pavilion and its Junkanoo-inspired arch will invite guests to embrace the traditions of The Bahamas, along with the sights, sounds and spirit of the country’s signature festival.

There will be plenty of family entertainment in store at Triton’s Trumpet Stage . And fun fact: The gazebo’s name is inspired by one of the stunning natural wonders found among the Bahamian beaches – a large, spiraled seashell commonly called “Triton’s Trumpet.” And for you Disney fans, if Triton sounds familiar, you might recognize it as the name of the mighty king from the beloved Disney animated classic “The Little Mermaid.”

Of course, we must mention the shopping opportunities! Treasures of Eleuthera will be the retail shop featuring locally made gifts and artisan crafts. What I really love is how the shop will spotlight Bahamian artists through an array of unique items that families will be able to bring home with them as a special keepsake.

And now, the question you might have been asking … is there going to be an adults-only space on the island? The answer is yes! I’m delighted to share that Serenity Bay will be a relaxing retreat exclusively for adults 18 years of age and older. For those of you who have sailed with Disney Cruise Line before, you might recognize Serenity Bay as a must-visit location on Disney Castaway Cay! At Disney Lookout Cay, Serenity Bay will feature a tranquil beach experience with a dining area and private cabanas available for reservation.

We’ve had the pleasure of sailing on Disney Cruise Line four times. While we also cruise on another cruise line, Disney Cruise Line vacations have all been extra special and we are more impressed with every cruise we take. If you’ve been to Walt Disney World or have spent time reading a website like ours, you may have heard of the “Disney Bubble.” The Disney Bubble is the totally immersive experience at Walt Disney World that blocks out the real world for the duration of your visit. It’s this short break from reality that makes a Disney vacation so unique. We love being in the Disney bubble during our vacations. It allows us to (mostly) forget about our everyday worries and concerns and really just enjoy being with our family on vacation.

A Disney cruise takes this “bubble” to a whole new level. A Disney cruise lets you leave your worries behind even more. This is especially true considering most guests will not sign up for the internet package—they will be even more disconnected from the outside world. This allows guests to focus on the here and now, their families, and the offerings of a Disney cruise. Disney magic is even more present on a Disney cruise—we feel it every single cruise, and we always leave trying to figure out how quickly we could get back on another Disney cruise!

3 – Finding Disney Magic at Sea

A Disney cruise really is different in a few distinct areas. First, in addition to the “Disney Bubble,” we talked about in #2, the entire vacation is sprinkled with Disney magic. The décor of the ship is infused with Disney details and fun. From hidden Mickeys in the décor to the amazing attention to every single detail, to fantastic family-friendly shows, there isn’t a moment you won’t feel you’ve entered somewhere magical.

Do you love meeting Disney Characters? If yes, then a Disney cruise is a fantastic way to meet all of your favorite characters, many of them in costumes that are exclusive to the Disney cruise line. Waking up and going to meet Mickey or Minnie before playing for the day is a fantastic way to start the day. It’s impossible to enjoy this cruise without bumping into Disney characters. No matter what your age, this is a bonus you’ll only find on the Disney Cruise Line.

4 – The Ships!

Disney Cruise Line ships are some of our favorite ships to cruise on! We mentioned above the infusion of Disney magic onto each ship, and the design of the ships is well thought out bringing the practical and magical together. Currently, there are five ships in the Disney Cruise Line fleet: Disney Magic , Disney Wonder, Disney Dream , Disney Fantasy , and Disney Wish . The sixth ship, Disney Treasure , is set to set sail in December 2024. The seventh ship, the Disney Adventure, is planned for sometime in 2025. The future looks bright for Disney Cruise Line!

What makes a Disney cruise ship different than other cruise lines? More than you might think. First, Disney staterooms are unique in that they have two bathroom areas: one room with a toilet and sink and another room with a bathtub/shower and a second sink. This makes things so much easier, especially when multiple people are trying to get ready for the day at once. Also, the inclusion of a bathtub along with the shower is so important for families with young children!

The youth clubs on the Disney Cruise Line are a kids’ dream come true! We’ve toured all the youth areas during our cruises, and we were undoubtedly jealous! These areas are so cool that we wanted to play there! If you expect Disney to be outstanding in one area, it should be here—and they deliver. We’ve overheard so many kids asking (and begging) to be able to go to the clubs. We also heard parents saying their kids didn’t want to leave! Families will get a chance to spend lots of time together, but each age group will be able to enjoy their own time in their age-appropriate areas of the ship. Disney has a lot of great options for families looking to vary their time together!

During our second cruise, we took our youngest teens with us. While they were sixteen and seventeen years old at the time, they thoroughly enjoyed their time in Vibe, the teen area, along with the rest of the ship. While they admit to being “Disney Kids,” they are also older and sometimes want a break from Disney. We were all pleasantly surprised at how much they enjoyed the cruise. They never felt like their time in Vibe was childish, and both looked forward to their time there every day. No matter what age your family members are, a Disney Cruise Line cruise offers age-appropriate activities for children of all ages.

5 – The Food on a Disney Cruise Wins Hands-Down

At Walt Disney World, there is a wide variety of food options from quick-service restaurants to award-winning signature dining. As we’ve said, we’ve cruised on other cruise lines, and for us, the food service on these different lines has been the most disappointing part of the cruise. We’ve found stale food without any real flavor. With each Disney cruise, we find Disney continues to win in this category. Everywhere we dined, the food was fresh and had a lot of flavor. We’ve tried the food at almost every location offered and were very pleased with what we found. We especially were thrilled with the restaurants in the evening. There is a lot of variety on the menu, and most importantly, the food was delicious. It was on par with what other cruise lines offer in their surcharge specialty dining. Knowing that you don’t need to pay extra every night for great food is a huge plus and another great reason to cruise with Disney.

Disney also features rotational dining. Rotational dining means you’ll enjoy dining at different restaurants each night, but your serving staff stays with you. We especially enjoyed this aspect of the dining experience. It kept things from getting monotonous. Also, it was great to have the same servers with us each night. It made our meals more enjoyable because they got to know us and what we liked. (See more on Disney’s exceptional service in #7).

Both the excellent food and fantastic service come together at Palo, a pay-extra food restaurant. We’ve enjoyed both brunch and dinner. On the most recent cruise on the Disney Fantasy, our dinner experience was the best dining experience I’ve had on Disney Cruise Line. Our server was fantastic and made the dinner very special. These dining experiences are so worth the small up-charge. We highly recommend adults dining at this restaurant at least once! The meals continue to be the highlight of our cruise.

6 – Entertainment with the Disney Difference

As you may expect, the entertainment offerings on a Disney cruise are top-notch. For us, the entertainment we enjoy the most during our cruises is the Broadway-style productions that are performed nightly. The cast are always terrific, and the productions are incredible. The production value is high, and you’ll get to enjoy multiple shows throughout your cruise. All of the shows are included in your cruise fare.

The Broadway-style shows are not the only entertainment you’ll enjoy. The deck shows are also fantastic and not to be missed. Disney also offers first-run movies during cruises (included in your cruise fare). Seeing movies as a family can be expensive, and this is just another perk Disney cruises offer!

7 – Disney’s Exceptional Service at Sea

Disney’s customer service is legendary, and as you would expect, the customer service on a Disney Cruise is no different. While we don’t have any particular needs, we know of guests with dietary restrictions. They told us that their servers were terrific at helping them find excellent food choices that supported their diet. From your room attendant to the servers that follow you in rotational dining, to the cast members who answer questions–every cast member interaction we had was a positive one. We felt pampered and spoiled by the staff all week, and there were always smiles to greet us. We can’t say enough about the service on the Disney Cruise Line!

8 – Castaway Cay

Most Disney cruises that sail to the Caribbean include a day at Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay . There was so much to love about Castaway Cay. This is so much more than a typical day at the beach. There are plenty of activities, food, and beverages that are included in your cruise fare. 9 – Themed Cruising

Themed cruising is another excellent offering by Disney Cruise Line. Disney offers seasonal cruises like Halloween on the High Seas and Very Merrytime Cruises . They also offer Pixar Day at Sea and Marvel Day at Sea cruises. We’ve enjoyed the Pixar Day at Sea, Marvel Day at Sea, and a Very Merrytime cruise, and all have been extra special because of the unique offerings available during the cruises. There is special entertainment, unique and often exclusive character greetings, special food and beverages, and more! A Disney Cruise Line vacation is going to be amazing, but the themed offerings are just extra special. We highly recommend them!

10 – An Amazing Vacation for All Ages Including Adults

Disney is known for being a great family vacation, but it is also an excellent option for Disney-loving adults. Chad and I enjoy cruising with and without our older children but always find plenty of time to enjoy some adult-only time when we cruise with the kids. There are plenty of offerings for us to enjoy without any kids around. We also love dining at Palo, the adults-only pool at Quiet Cove, the adults-only beach area, Serenity Bay, and the adults-only clubs in the evenings. We love Disney and were able to enjoy the magic of a Disney cruise but also experience a fantastic vacation with time for just the two of us. It really is an excellent option for adults.

There will be no shortage of these kinds of opportunities on Disney Cruise Line (DCL) in 2024. From being among the first to visit Disney's brand-new private island destination to enjoying an immersive Pixar-themed day at sea to setting sail on the maiden voyage of Disney's newest ship , here are the Disney cruise experiences I think will go above and beyond in 2024. 

1. Disney Magic to Lighthouse Point, DCL's newest private island destination

One thing my family looks forward to during any Disney cruise is a stop at DCL's private island, Castaway Cay. In 2024, Disney Cruise Line will unveil its second private island destination, Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point , on the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas. And I can’t wait to see how they plan to outdo the already incredible Castaway Cay experience. 

Family cruises: 7 best cruise lines for families (and their 12 most kid-friendly ships)

Similar to when Disney created its Aulani resort in Hawaii , Disney Imagineers have been working with local artists and cultural experts to design an authentic Bahamian island experience at Lighthouse Point. Curvilinear buildings are meant to evoke scattered seashells along the shore, and a Bahamian Art and Culture Pavilion will feature special programs and local artists that celebrate Bahama traditions.

2. Alaska and Australia cruises on the Disney Wonder in 2024

When my youngest daughter graduated from high school, my wife and I asked where she wanted to go for our family vacation to celebrate her milestone . Her top choice was Alaska. In the summer months, Disney Cruise Line positions one of its smaller ships, the Disney Wonder, out west so families can take weeklong sailings from Vancouver to the "Last Frontier." Along the way, you can experience majestic wildlife and stunning scenery while calling on Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, and glacier viewing along the Stikine Icecap.

But that's not all the Disney Wonder gets up to! In 2023, Disney also began offering Australia and New Zealand cruises onboard the ship, and that will continue in 2023 and 2024. Disney Cruise Line has announced a new season of sailings in the region from October 2024 through February 2025. 

The Disney Wonder is one of DCL's original class of ships, and with a capacity of 2,713 passengers, it remains one of the line's most intimate vessels. That's a reason to love it. Far from being a drawback, the smaller size makes it less likely to feel overwhelming to first-timers.

3. European vacations on the Disney Dream

In 2023, Disney Cruise Line sent the Disney Dream across the Atlantic for the first time. The ship will head back to Europe in 2024 with summer cruises in the Mediterranean, Greek Isles, British Isles, Iceland, and Norwegian fjords. These are the best 2024 Disney Cruises for experiencing new ports of call like Valencia, Spain; Haugesund, Norway; and Hamburg, Germany, along with three Mediterranean destinations (Catania, Italy; Kusadasi, Turkey; and Valletta, Malta) that Disney will visit for the first time since 2014.

In June, the Disney Dream sails from Civitavecchia (Rome) with stops in Naples and three different Greek Islands, including Mykonos and Crete. My family sailed on Disney’s inaugural Norwegian fjords cruise in 2015, and it was hands down our best family vacation because of the Disney-specific experiences no other cruise line can offer, such as Anna and Elsa from "Frozen" posing for pictures at a Norwegian Village museum in Ålesund.

4. Disney Cruise Line's private island trifecta on the Disney Fantasy

Many fans of Disney Cruise Line’s private island get particularly excited when itineraries include a Castaway Cay "double dip," i.e., two stops at Castaway Cay. But in 2024, the Disney Fantasy ventures on a seven-night itinerary that calls on Disney’s private islands not once, not twice, but three times with a stop at Castaway Cay and two visits to the brand-new Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point.

I love Disney’s Castaway Cay and have enjoyed so many relaxing stops to the island. I especially remember learning the "stingray shuffle" and holding stingrays during Castaway Ray's Stingray Adventure. I love that this 2024 Disney cruise will give families plenty of time to explore Disney’s brand-new private island destination on the southernmost tip of Eleuthera without overlooking a day at the old favorite. 

5. Disney Wish theme park and cruise vacation

The Disney Wish is DCL's newest ship (for now), debuting in July 2022 and offering three- and four-night cruises to the Bahamas from Port Canaveral, Florida . The close proximity of Port Canaveral to Walt Disney World makes it easy to combine an Orlando theme park vacation with a Disney Cruise.

Disney land and sea vacations are the best of both worlds for families with theme park lovers who want to go, go, go, and other family members looking for a more laidback experience. My advice is to head to the theme parks first, get tired out from the walking, rides, and stimulation, and then sail off on a four-night cruise to decompress. My wife and I enjoyed the most expansive stateroom ever when we sailed on the Disney Wish last summer and it couldn't have been more relaxing.

6. Themed Cruises – Pixar, Marvel, and holidays

In January, I had the opportunity to experience Pixar Day at Sea , Disney Cruise Line’s newest themed cruise, on the Disney Fantasy. In my review for FamilyVacationist, I called it an " overflowing toy box of fun " and I'm excited for more families to experience it on a Disney cruise in 2024. The cruise was packed with so many Pixar character meets, themed-activities, special shows, foods, and treats that some of it spilled into additional days at sea. In 2024, Pixar Day at Sea returns to the Disney Fantasy on seven-night Caribbean sailings from January through March.

Disney's themed cruise days aren't limited to Pixar, either. There's a Marvel Day at Sea on five-night Disney Dream cruises departing Fort Lauderdale from January through March, and when the festive season rolls around most of the ships offer holiday sailings with Halloween on the High Seas and Very Merrytime cruises. 

I was so impressed with the Halloween tree in the ship's atrium when my family sailed on a Halloween cruise. Over the course of the cruise, the tree "bloomed" with spooky Jack-o-lanterns. In addition, Disney characters were decked out in costumes, there was trick-or-treating, and other special activities. And of course Very Merrytime cruises have a tree-lighting ceremony, Mickey and Minnie’s Holiday Party, carolers, special drinks and treats, and appearances by the guest of honor for the cruise, Santa Claus.

7. Disney Treasure Sets Course for Adventure

Last but not least, Disney Treasure joins the Disney Cruise Line fleet with its maiden voyage on December 21, 2024. Adventure is the theme for Disney's sixth cruise ship with spaces and entertainment inspired by "Aladdin," "Coco," "Zootopia," "Jungle Cruise," even "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea."

As a fan of the Magic Kingdom’s Jungle Cruise ride and Skipper Canteen restaurant, I can’t wait to get immersed in the kitschy 1930s adventure vibe onboard the Disney Treasure. The ship will sail seven-night itineraries to the eastern and western Caribbean and have a theater-in-the-round restaurant at the Plaza de Coco as well as a cinematic dining experience at Worlds of Marvel. Because these are longer cruises than those available on DCL's other ship in the same class (Disney Wish), you can experience two distinct shows in each of these venues during a voyage.
