19 Of The Best Weekend Breaks In The UK
By Hayley Maitland
One of the surprise blessings of the pandemic has been a renewed appreciation for the best weekend breaks in the UK, from the Isles of Scilly to the Isle of Skye , and with sustainability at the forefront of everyone’s minds right now, trading holidays in far-flung destinations for escapes to lesser-known regions in Britain seems increasingly like a win-win. Fortunately, sumptuous destination hotels have opened everywhere from Kent to Aberdeen over the last few years, and all of them are a delight to visit in any season.
Art lovers should head north to Braemar, where the founders of Hauser & Wirth opened the Fife Arms just nine miles down the road from Balmoral , while serious gourmands will be enamoured with The Newt in Somerset, the sister property to the Eden-like Babylonstoren in South Africa’s Stellenbosch. As for the best UK breaks for couples? The Pig at Harlyn Bay offers romantic seclusion, while Hampshire’s Heckfield Place is hard to beat when it comes to pampering. Read on for the best weekend breaks in the UK.

Best weekend break in the UK for: a European-style city break.
Where to stay: You’re spoiled for choice in terms of Edinburgh hotels, but the soon-to-open Gleneagles Townhouse is at the top of our must-visit list this year. Set within the old Bank of Scotland headquarters on St Andrew’s Square, the first city outpost from the much-loved Perthshire estate features 33 distinctive rooms in the Scots Baronial style, featuring decorative mouldings, original fireplaces, and canopy beds. As you would expect from the founders of Gleneagles, there’s also a world-class spa – with the former bank vault now housing an infrared sauna. You can even indulge in some cryotherapy, if the nippy Scottish weather isn’t cold enough for you.
Where to eat: Hidden away in industrial Leith, Roberta Hall-McCarron’s The Little Chartroom is the most exciting restaurant in Edinburgh, with a menu inspired by her childhood sailing along the Scottish coastline. Reserve a table well in advance for the chance to try the likes of curried mussel sauce with finger lime near the waterfront. The same team recently launched a sister establishment, Eleanore , nearby, too, which is an ideal pit-stop for a glass of wine and some fresh oysters.
Where to go: All of the major national galleries in Edinburgh are top-notch (the Gallery of Modern Art just acquired Salvador Dalí’s infamous lobster telephone), but you should also make a beeline for the Fruitmarket Gallery , which has hosted thought-provoking exhibitions by everyone from Louise Bourgeois to Jean-Michel Basquiat through the years.
The Peak District
Best weekend break in the UK for… Stately homes, ancient villages and rugged landscapes.
Where to stay… Historically, the best places to stay in the Peak District have been cosy pubs with roaring log fires (ideal for drying off after being caught in the rain while tramping around the National Park). As of 2021, however, the converted Victorian pile Callow Hall is the most elegant place to lay your head after a day of rambling. Guests can choose between understated rooms in the main house – which feature standalone copper baths – or fully immerse themselves in the landscape in either a “treehouse” or “hive” room designed by the team behind Chewton Glen. But, the grounds are so beautiful, you would be hard pressed to stay in your room for more than a few hours, lovely as it is: Callow Hall’s 35 acres include ancient forests, wild streams, and fruit orchards – not to mention rolling lawns where guests can play croquet.
Where to eat… While the tempting menu at Callow Hall’s on-site restaurant is based around seasonal British produce (including grouse from the 12th of August), you cannot visit the Peak District without having a picnic atop a limestone cliff. Combine a visit to Chatsworth with a trip to its Estate Farm Shop, where you can stock up on local meats, cheeses, and breads.
Where to go… Follow the Lathkill Dale, a narrow, rocky gorge, to the 900-year-old Haddon Hall , one of the finest surviving medieval homes in Britain, complete with a rose-filled Elizabethan garden.
Northumberland
Best weekend break in the UK for… Breathtaking Roman and medieval ruins.
Where to stay… Nestled within the honey-stoned village of Blanchland, the Lord Crewe Arms started out life as a 12th-century priory before becoming one of the most stylish hotels in Northumberland. Relics of its past are still everywhere, including the stained-glass windows and giant fireplaces. Spread across the main building, a former pub across the way, and several miners’ cottages, the rooms themselves are wonderfully cosy – filled with worn paperbacks, hot-water bottles, and novelty fudge. Guests are able to borrow everything needed to take advantage of the surrounding countryside, including Wellington boots and fishing gear for use on the hotel’s stretch of the River Derwent. Make a point of having Sunday lunch at the on-site restaurant, including a glass of the Crewe Brew Ale.
Where to eat… Head to King Edward’s Bay, where Riley’s Fish Shack has enamoured foodies since it first launched as a portable stall in 2012. Set directly on the beach, its specialty is (of course) the catch of the day, which varies from lobster to monkfish, with crispy potatoes so good you might just break into song. Oh, and there’s hot buttered rum made on site.
Where to go… Catch a boat to the Farne Islands to watch seals, puffins, and dolphins in their natural habitat, or make a pilgrimage to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne .
Best weekend break in the UK for… combining a rural retreat with a city break.
Where to stay: Despite being set within 20 acres of glorious gardens and parkland – encompassing croquet lawns, rolling meadows, 200 year-old oak trees and an expansive lake – the National Trust’s Middlethorpe Hall is still, remarkably, less than a 10-minute drive from York. As a result, it offers the best of both worlds: you can explore every inch of the historic city and while away many an hour in perfect solitude, strolling through the grounds of the hotel, soaking in the indoor swimming pool at the well-appointed spa, and curling up by the fire in the grand, lemon-coloured drawing room surrounded by oil paintings and rare antiques. Each of the 29 bedrooms, whether in the main house (which dates back to 1699) or off the picturesque 18th-century courtyard, is thoughtfully decorated, with four-poster beds, polished writing desks and cushioned reading nooks. Keep an eye out for a portrait of Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, too – the poet and essayist is just one of the manor’s illustrious former residents.
Where to eat: Middlethorpe’s culinary offerings are exemplary – don’t leave without trying the scrumptious afternoon tea, and sampling head chef Ashley Binder’s spectacular dinner menu in the oak-panelled, candlelit dining room – but it’s also worth venturing into town for the startlingly innovative, Michelin-starred, nine-course tasting menu at Roots . Designed by Tommy Banks and overseen by Will Lockwood, it focuses on locally sourced, seasonal produce and emerges as a love letter to the region. You might begin with a selection of Oldstead charcuterie, followed by a crab, parsley and caviar broth; glazed lobster, carrot and sea buckthorn; or roast duck served with plum and cabbages. Somehow, the desserts are even more astounding, including an unbelievably creamy, deliciously sweet dish made with chicory root and potato (yes, really) that is truly exceptional.
Where to go: Scale the medieval city walls for panoramic views of York, climb down to wander along the serene bank of the river Ouse, duck into York Minster to admire the cathedral’s extraordinary stained glass windows, and end the day in Shambles, a cobblestoned thoroughfare home to quaint taverns and tea rooms.
Best weekend break in the UK for… Reliving your halcyon student days.
Where to stay: Set on the corner of Parker’s Piece (where the rules of football were first established), former coaching inn The University Arms has been whimsically refurbished by interior designer Martin Brudnizki – perhaps best known as the man behind Annabel’s latest revamp. The Edwardian-style rooms (many of which are painted in Cambridge blue) are cosy and filled with sweet details (each one has a copy of The Wind in the Willows , for example). Fittingly, there’s also an on-site library filled with books chosen by the Heywood Hill team, and hotel bicycles to rent in order to cruise around this most beautiful of university towns.
Where to eat: Parker’s Tavern within The University Arms is always a good choice. Built to recall a student dining hall, its menu is all about British produce: saltwater crust meat pies with homemade chutneys; Dover sole with coastal herbs; and classic roast dinners with all the trimmings. You’re also morally obligated to try one of the Chelsea buns at Fitzbillies .
Where to go: Browse the wonderfully eclectic collection in Kettle’s Yard , which was carefully restored in 2018. Originally a private house belonging to Tate curator Jim Ede and his wife Helen, the gallery features works by everyone from Joan Miró to Barbara Hepworth.
Pembrokeshire
Best weekend break in the UK for… Great British beaches without the Cornwall crowds.
Where to stay: Surrounded by 26 acres of woodlands and meadows, with the Preseli Hills just visible in the distance on clear days, The Grove in Narbeth is without doubt one of Wales’s most charming hotels. Its Arts & Crafts-inflected rooms are cosy yet luxurious, with deep roll-top baths in many of the suites. Also deeply charming: the upstairs sitting room with a roaring log fire (and plenty of novels to work your way through if it rains), and the fragrant walled gardens on the property.
Where to eat: The menu at the Grove’s much-lauded restaurant The Fernery utilises hyper-local produce to showcase Welsh cuisine at its best: Per Las; fermented leeks in onion broth; Eccles cake… For a much less formal but still distinctly special meal, head to the delightfully quirky Cafe Môr , which dishes out lobster rolls with Welsh Sea butter and Welshman’s caviar.
Where to go: Pembrokeshire has a strong claim to the most glorious beaches in the UK , from Prescipe Bay, with its fossil-studded sandstone cliffs, to Church Doors Cove, formerly the province of smugglers. For a taste of the local wildlife, catch a boat to Ramsey Islands, home to peregrines, seals and more.
Best weekend break in the UK for… Quirky, retro design.
Where to stay: A short distance from Deal’s pebbled seafront, the former design editor of Wallpaper* gutted and revamped former Victorian pub The Rose , transforming it into an eight-bedroom haven, complete with a Tracey Emin painting hanging above the bar. Room 4, with its roll-top bath, is a favourite, but whichever room you choose, expect sweet touches, like Austin Austin products and vintage record players. Also of note: Nuno Mendez – best known for overseeing the kitchen at Chiltern Firehouse – now leads the culinary offering here.
Where to eat: It would be a mistake to spend a weekend in Kent without making a reservation at The Sportsman in Seasalter. The menu is a paean to the Southeast coast of the UK, with the team taking their cues from the sea and the marshlands around it in the same way that the monks who farmed the area for Canterbury’s religious elite in the 12th century did. The house-made seaweed butter alone more than justifies the trip.
Where to go: When it comes to art in Kent, you cannot beat the Turner Contemporary , a stone’s throw away from No.42 by GuestHouse, Margate , which takes its design cues from its quirky location and also boasts a wellness café and treatment rooms .
Best weekend break in the UK for… Anyone with a period drama obsession .
Where to stay: There’s no question that Heckfield Place is the most spectacular hotel in Hampshire. The only difficulty with staying there is that you may be tempted never to leave its 400 acres of grounds, complete with a biodynamic farm; an ornamental lake for wild swimming; a walled garden; and seemingly endless woodlands and meadows to tramp through. The former Georgian home owes its refreshingly modern interiors to designer Ben Thompson, a protégé of Ilse Crawford, who filled its rooms with a mix of delicate antiques and contemporary pieces by the likes of Rose Uniacke. Heavenly flower arrangements by Kitten Grayson only add to the charm. Make sure to pay a visit to the Little Bothy Spa, where treatments feature products derived from Heckfield Place’s own apothecary garden.
Where to eat: The food offering at Heckfield Place is built around the produce from its biodynamic farm, and includes two separate restaurants: Hearth , where all of the dishes are prepared over an open fire, and Marle , where the food is, quite simply, a joy. Think sharing platters of baby vegetables with herb crème fraîche; scallops with fennel puree and beurre blanc; and roasted quail with soubise and poached red wine figs.
Where to go: It is a truth universally acknowledged that any trip to Hampshire should include a detour to Jane Austen’s Grade I-listed cottage in Chawton , where she wrote the majority of her classic novels, including Pride & Prejudice .

The Slaughters Manor House offers the quintessential honey-coloured appeal, boasting olde-world beauty on the outside and a cool, contemporary interior.
Expect roaring fires and squishy sofas alongside a sleek cocktail bar, games room and Hunter wellies. Take the walk from Lower Slaughter to Upper Slaughter for a super-pretty stroll.
Vineyard views in the South Downs at a West Sussex retreat
It’s no secret that the south is where it's at for the UK’s best wine. But while it's usually English fizz that attracts most of the buzz, the South Downs is also home to England’s first pinotage vineyard at the picture-perfect Leonardslee Estate.
Wake with a view over the vines when you check in to the decadent Leonardslee House , an 1855 Italianate-style mansion revamped in 2019 with impressive results. The extra time and attention spent perfecting the 10 high-ceilinged guest rooms with British-designed furnishings and carefully curated collections of books and illustrations really pays off, giving a stylish elegance to your weekend getaway.
Don’t miss the hotel’s Michelin-starred restaurant, Interlude, where an 18-course tasting menu championing estate-foraged ingredients can be paired with wines from Leonardslee’s sister vineyard in South Africa.
Lounge in luxury at a destination spa in Leicestershire
The beauty of doing nothing is highly underrated in these modern, connected times. And sometimes we need to really dial it down to reconnect and reenergise ourselves. And there's nowhere nicer to lounge about in luxury than at Ragdale Hall Spa , an indulgent spa hotel in a leafy corner of Leicestershire.
With six pools, including a glorious rooftop infinity pool and a thermal spa with no less than 12 heat and water experiences, plus more than a hundred spa professionals to cater to your every whim, it's the perfect place for a pampering weekend. Of course, it's important to nurture our taste buds as well and Ragdale's grand dining room and elegant cocktail bar does it impeccably well.
Head west for a leafy London city break
A London city break is as exciting as it comes – famous sights, endless shopping, West End shows – it's fun but exhausting. Just nine miles west of Trafalgar Square, Richmond-on-Thames is a perfect alternative for a relaxing London city break. Home to London's largest royal park, spot the resident deer in Duchess Wood, enjoy a stroll along the Thames Path, stopping for a pint in a riverside pub, while Kew Gardens, Petersham Nurseries and Ham House are all within easy reach.
A stones' throw from Richmond Park and the River Thames, The Richmond Hill Hotel is a Georgian beauty and a relaxing base for exploring this leafy corner of the capital. Behind its Regency façade is a elegant and contemporary interior with a swanky, seasonally inspired restaurant and a chic cocktail bar.
An underground spa and city break in Bath
Combine a city break with a stay in a luxury hotel at The Gainsborough Bath Spa , which has a unique selling point - thermal mineral waters pump directly into its underground spa and spa suites.
The opulent hotel is tucked down a quiet side street in the centre of Bath, so you're perfectly placed to explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site city from your indulgent base. Take in the Roman Baths, the Georgian terraces at the Royal Crescent, and climb the Bath Abbey tower.
Don't forget to grab a Sally Lunn bun (cakes at the oldest house in Bath, now a tea room, are legendary).
Horse riding and boutique chic in the New Forest
With the kind of trendy interiors you might expect in a funky London hotel, The Huntsman of Brockenhurst is a boutique bolthole smack-bang in the middle of the New Forest.
You can go horse riding at the local stables, see wild ponies roaming around the streets, or enjoy plenty of pretty country walks in the heathland and forest trails.
A foodie staycation at an idyllic country house in Kent
Tucked away on the leafy outskirts of Ashford – a 10-minute taxi ride from Ashford International – Boys Hall is a beautiful boutique hotel in a Jacobean manor house. Set in three acres of wild English gardens, this country house invites you to sit back with a glass of local fizz on the sun-drenched terrace or cosy down over a game of Scrabble and a warming cocktail in the oak-panelled lounge.
The main draw is the food. Championing the best of small local Kent producers – it's not called the Garden of England for nothing – dine out on dishes such as grilled Romney Marsh lamb, rosemary potato and pickled morels, hot smoked salmon with avocado and sushi rice or sticky braun crumpet with kholrabi and pickled chilli, while the menu's local Kent wines shine. After dinner, hunker down in one of the nine plush, beamed suites.
Outdoor swimming and countryside tramping in Hampshire
Pull in and park up for a weekend getaway at Tylney Hall in Hampshire. There's a lovely spa and indoor pool for relaxing and, when the weather plays ball, the huge outdoor pool becomes wildly inviting.
There are 66 acres of grounds to explore (dogs and children welcome) croquet, and bikes for hire, and the Victorian mansion offers the sort of splendour reminiscent of a bygone era.
And, if you're a historical literary fan, you can drive 20 minutes to visit Jane Austen's Grade I-listed home in Chawton, where she wrote many of her novels.
Seaside pampering on a wellness weekend in Cornwall
With stunning views across sub-tropical gardens to Gyllyngvase Beach, St Michaels Resort is the perfect place for a relaxing (or active) weekend getaway.
With a super-swish spa and fitness programme, you can choose how much you want to get involved with, whether it's a yoga class or simply relaxing in the cedarwood hot tub and the south west's largest hydra pool.
Walk the Coastal Path before enjoying scrumptious food in the stylish restaurant with a sea-facing deck.
A regal country retreat in Yorkshire
There could be worse weekend getaways than tucking into cream tea at one of the finest stately homes in the country. Goldsborough Hall is a 400-year-old upscale country retreat that was once the home of Princess Mary, the aunt of Queen Elizabeth II.
It features beautiful period features throughout, luxurious four-poster beds and Chesterfield sofas, plus a three AA rosette fine dining restaurant.
The upmarket spa town of Harrogate, with its posh eateries, boutique shops, pretty parks, and art galleries, is just 20 minutes away. And there's ample opportunity for tramping the Yorkshire Moors, visiting historic buildings (Bolton Abbey and Knaresborough Castle), while Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal, Yorkshire's finest Cistercian Abbey ruin, is half an hour away.
History, culture and a stylish hotel in Oxford
Arguably the trendiest hotel in Oxford, The Old Bank is a modern and stylish place to make your base for exploring this historically-rich city. As well as The Botanic Garden, Magdalen Bridge and the River Cherwell all being within five minutes of the hotel, there's also views over iconic college buildings like University Church of St Mary and Radcliffe Camera.
You'll enjoy how the period features sit next to impressive modern art as well as the buzzy brasserie. You can also head down the river towpath on two wheels on the hotel's bikes.
Beachside bliss and a rooftop terrace in Devon
Soak up the sun and the coastal views at Salcombe Harbour Hotel , a nautical-chic hotel on the shores of the Salcombe Estuary. The location is sublime, and you'll feel instantly relaxed sipping cocktails on a sun lounger on the rooftop terrace.
Enjoy walks on the coast path, and the freshest catch of the day at the waterside restaurant. Situated in the South Devon AONB, you're also just half an hour from Dartmoor National Park.
Fell-walking and Michelin-starred dining in the Lake District
Foodies and walkers will be in heaven on this weekend getaway in the Lake District. Check into the Forest Side Hotel on the edge of picturesque Grasmere for a weekend full of epic walks and equally impressive dishes.
The Victorian mansion is home to a Michelin-starred restaurant in a cosy and relaxed atmosphere. And when you can't eat another morsel, you can be at the top of the Helm Crag fell in 90 minutes.
Soak up the heritage in Henley-on-Thames
Escape for a riverside staycation in 12th-century market town Henley-on-Thames, which sits beside the River Thames and is overlooked by the gorgeous Chilterns. Known for its annual Royal Regatta, Henley attracts the world’s finest rowers and is an excellent place to enjoy your own boat trip down the river during a weekend getaway.
You'll want to check into the Hotel Du Vin , housed in a building that spent centuries as a brewery, which is ironic when you see the length of the wine list! The hotel has retained its heritage while boasting warm and inviting spaces. It blends Georgian details with modern furnishings. Alfresco meals in the courtyard are also a highlight.
Weekend champers at a rooftop bar in Edinburgh
The Market Street Hotel forms part of Edinburgh's historic city skyline, and boasts a wonderful rooftop lounge and champagne bar. It's also perfectly located for taking in all the sights, being just minutes on foot from the Royal Mile.
Sleek, contemporary interiors are complemented by thoughtful touches like freshly roasted coffee and milk frothers in the stylish bedrooms. The food is also sublime, and always washed down with champagne.
Must-visits like Camera Obscura, the National Museum of Scotland, and Edinburgh Castle are a hop, skip and jump away.
Be in the buzz of London at one of the finest hotels near Piccadilly
Want to live the vibrancy of London while enjoying the relaxation of a luxury hotel? Step inside the Sofitel London St James and you'll forget that buzzing Pall Mall and Piccadilly are just metres away. The beautiful address from French hotel brand Sofitel boasts all the things we love about our European neighbour, from the style and sophistication to the exquisite food you can experience at its restaurant Wild Honey.
The bedrooms are fresh and modern in style, with bright carpets and contemporary art, alongside classic luxuries, such as Hermes toiletries in the elegant bathrooms. When it comes to dining, you'll adore the fine British flavours combined with French techniques at Wild Honey.
From the slow-cooked Denbighshire Welsh lamb to the wild mushroom tart, the dishes here are unforgettable. Meanwhile, the spa oozes French flair and indulgence, with detoxifying HydraFacials and Crème de Rassoul body wraps to stimulates blood circulation.

Scotland ’s northwest Highlands boast some of the best cycling roads in Britain. Weekend breaks in the UK don't come much better than this on two wheels. Wild swathes of largely deserted mountainous terrain give way to clear, well maintained roads perfect for a bike ride, with few cars joining you along the way.
The scenery around is astoundingly beautiful, and you’ll find yourself cruising through deep valleys and past inky-blue lochs. Visit in summer, when the weather is most reliable.
This tailor-made trip to Scotland's Wildest Natural Scenery is a breath of fresh air and a perfect way to explore the most enchanting landscapes of the Highlands. It will allow you to get to know the wildest landscapes of Scotland, its fast-paced history and its amazing traditions.

World-class museums, West End theatres and leading art galleries; when it comes to weekend breaks in the UK, England’s capital has it all. With a packed calendar of exhibitions and events throughout the year, London draws the biggest names in music, sport and the arts.
It doesn’t need to be expensive, either, as many of the capital’s museums are free, and cheap events are held year-round. Rough Guides readers even recently voted it the world’s coolest city . You’ll never be struggling for something to do here. There is also an awesome Legoland park not far away from the city, which makes London also a great place for a family day trip .

The sweeping curve of Llandudno’s bay draws in visitor after visitor every year, and it’s no wonder why. The seaside town offers stunning coastal scenery. Take the tramway to the top of Great Orme for wonderful panoramic views across the bay.
Or, take in the scene from above on one of the town’s cable cars. Nearby Conwy Castle is a must-see. Climb the battlements to admire the snow-peaked mountains of Snowdonia and the placid Conwy estuary while you're here.

Bath has been a popular spa destination since the Roman era, and its natural hot springs still steam today. With boutique hotels offering luxury spa weekend breaks in the UK, Bath is well worth a visit.
Of course, the town’s focal point is the wonderfully preserved Roman Baths. In July and August, the Baths stay open until 10 pm. Torches light up the ruins, making an evening summer stroll through the Georgian streets even more enticing.

The Cornish coast attracts thousands of surfers every year, with some of the best waves in the UK. In the summer, Rip Curl Boardmasters festival brings together music and surfing, pulling in big names from both.
Fistral Beach, where the festival’s surf competitions are held, is the most popular year-round. However, the many bays will leave you with plenty of choices. There’s no end of surf schools to try, and when you’re tired of the waves, treat yourself to a Cornish cream tea .

Edinburgh Castle ’s fairytale towers are a reminder of the city’s ancient roots. While sleek, urban design in the city centre gives the city a decidedly cool edge. Take an architectural tour to explore the Old Town's winding Reformation-era streets and the elegant Neoclassical buildings of the New Town.
Modern highlights include the controversial Scottish Parliament building and the swirling Edinburgh Landform. When you've had your fill of the city from the ground, head to the top of Calton Hill to take in the skyline from above.

A trip to the New Forest is truly magical. Designated a royal hunting preserve 1,000 years ago, the enchanting working forest is wonderfully unspoilt. Here there is plenty of unenclosed pasture land allowing animals to roam free.
The area is a wildlife haven, where you can find many indigenous species in their natural surroundings. The most iconic are the New Forest ponies which rule the land. You’ll find yourself giving way to horses rather than people on a drive through the forest.

North Cornwall is also one of the most dog-friendly parts of the UK. Many local attractions, including the beaches, welcome well-behaved four-legged friends. In particular, Harlyn beach is dog-friendly all year round. The low waves of the beach are perfect for playing with your pet.

Frequently Asked Questions
What types of weekend breaks are available.
We offer a hugely diverse range of weekend breaks all across the UK (and some beyond!). These include luxury hotels in centre cities like London, Edinburgh and Liverpool, glamping breaks, B&Bs, spa retreats and much, much more - including options for the whole family, adults’ only and dog-friendly. You’ll find budget-friendly ideas, all-out luxury for extra-special occasions and everything in between in the 'Short Breaks' section of our website.
How much do the weekend breaks cost?
It depends on what you’re looking for - you can find glamping minibreaks for under £75, while some of our once-in-a-lifetime weekend breaks might set you back around £500. (We’d say that’s still pretty good value, FYI.) We regularly run Special Offers and deals on our weekend breaks, too, so keep your eyes peeled.
Are there any special offers or discounts available for weekend breaks?
Yep, there are plenty - we regularly work with our partners to ensure we can give our customers the best deal possible. That means you’ll often find special offers or time-limited deals on weekend breaks. This isn’t limited to certain occasions, either - we run them all year round.
Where can I find reviews and feedback from people who have experienced a Virgin Experience Days break before?
Browse our Short Breaks page, choose an experience that takes your fancy, and scroll down to the ‘Reviews’ section. These are automatically updated, so you’ll get a chance to see what others have to say about their trip.
Is it possible to customise my own break package with Virgin Experience Days?
At the moment, customised break packages aren’t something we offer - but never say never! That’s not to say we don’t have loads of exciting stuff already, though - if you scroll through our Short Breaks, you’ll find plenty with ready-made itineraries, from outdoor adventure weekends, to short breaks paired with Michelin-starred dinners, theatre shows and more.
Are there any age restrictions on booking a weekend break with Virgin Experience Days?
This all depends on the particular weekend break you’re looking to book. You’ll find all the details you need in the section marked ‘Participant Guidelines’. There, you’ll see the minimum age requirements if they apply. For spa breaks, this is often 18+, but we have a huge range of family-friendly and child-friendly weekend breaks available, too.

Famed for how many Londoners moved here during lockdown (it’s even been referred to as Dalston-on-Sea, which is cringe, we’ll admit), St Leonards-On-Sea is a cracking day out from the Big Smoke for beachside drinks and a tonne of great food spots. Head to food market Heist (basically a much nicer version of Boxpark) for orange wine and street food, then sink pints at Goat Ledge , a vibesy, colourful shack right on the beach. If you fancy splashing out a little, book dinner at the fabulously old-school St Clement’s for white tablecloths and delicious seafood. Plus you've got easy access to the rest of Hastings for its Old Town, pier and the Norman castle ruins.
How far? 58 miles
How to get there: A one hour 18 minute train from London Charing Cross
2. Dungeness
Dungeness’s shingly, shipwreck-dotted beach is so spookily empty that it’s been described as Britain’s only desert (though the Met Office refuses to technically recognise it as such, the party poopers). It’s a beautifully eerie landscape, with the (disused) nuclear power station and two lighthouses looming over a motley mixture of weathered shacks, beached fishing boats and sleek, modernist bungalows – all clustered along a single in-and-out road.
But despite all that emptiness, there’s a surprising amount to do here. You could catch the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch steam train down the coast, and hop off in Dungeness for a walk and a pint at the lonely Britannia Inn. Grab a freshly-caught lunch at the famous Snack Shack: specialities include lobster or crab rolls and smoked cod chowder. And check out the galleries and open houses showcasing the work of the (surprisingly) many artists who have moved down here, including the shingle garden of the experimental filmmaker Derek Jarman, whose yellow-windowed Prospect Cottage is a major landmark here. Book in advance for a 40-minute tour inside.
If you’ve got time, head over to RSPB Dungeness nature reserve for a chance to glimpse glossy ibises and marsh harriers – plus the huge concrete ‘sound mirrors’, pre-radar experiments from WW1 that were designed to listen out for planes. (Look out on the RSPB site for news of the rare open days when you can get up close.) Finish off your day with dinner at the Pilot Inn; I’m willing to back the quality of their famous fish and chips, which were the thing that brought Derek Jarman here in the first place.
How far? 86 miles
Get there O ne hour by train from St Pancras International to Folkestone, with a one-hour 30-minute bus ride to Dungeness. Or take a bus or taxi from Folkestone to Hythe station to board the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway. Alternatively, Dungeness is around two hours from London by car.
3. Stratford-upon-Avon
As a born-and-bred Midlander, I’ve spent many Saturdays traipsing around Stratford-upon-Avon’s lovely streets. With its half-timbered houses and canalside pubs, Stratford’s got just enough of the small-town charm you’re craving on an escape from the Big Smoke, but unlike a small town, there’s actually loads to see and do.
The Bard, of course, is the big draw here, and Shakespeare’s house, his wife Anne Hathaway’s cottage and the RSC’s famous theatre are all must-sees. But Stratford is more than just a Tudor Disneyland, we promise. Take a boat tour of the canal basin to find out more about the West Midlands waterways, refresh yourselves in the Grade II-listed Old Thatch Tavern and stop for a scoop of Eton mess ice cream at Hooray’s British Gelato Kitchen.
How far? 104 miles
Get there T wo hours 15 minutes by train from Marylebone; around two hours by car.
4. Whitstable
Don’t even think about thinking about it: Whitstable is far from overhyped. Sure, the secret is most definitely out about this fabulous little seaside town, but the vibes here are as great as they were 20 years ago. Grab brunch at Farm & Harper , fish and chips at Ossie’s and a glorious pint of craft at the Twelve Taps , and treat yourself to a dozen oysters to go at Wheelers Oyster Bar on the high street. Once you’ve walked the length of the beach and admired the beach huts, settle in at the famous pub-on-the-beach Old Neptune for a pint and wait for sunset to fall. Plus, Whitstable is so near, you’ll be back home before you can say ‘ another bank holiday?’. But that’s if you don’t miss the last train.
How far? 50 miles
Get there One hour 15 minutes from St Pancras International, around two hours by car.
5. Brighton
With its pebble beach, wall-to-wall live music venues and buzzing LGBTQ+ scene, there’s nowhere better for topping up your Vitamin Sea levels than Brighton . Start your day by dodging seagulls on the Palace Pier, then shop up a storm in the Lanes, which are packed with independent boutiques, record stores and vegan eateries. Sit down with a couple of pints in the Brighton Beer Dispensary, which champions small Sussex breweries like the Hand Brew Co.
How far? A little over 50 miles
Get there One hour by train from Victoria, Blackfriars or London Bridge; around two hours by car.
6. The New Forest
A trip to the New Forest is about as close as you can get to going on safari without buying a plane ticket. As you make your way down dappled lanes and across the heather-covered heath you’ll be watched the famous ponies, which have grazed there for thousands of years, plus free-ranging Highland cattle and pigs hoovering up fallen acorns. Don’t fancy being stuck in the car all day? Hire a two-seater electric Twizzy buggy to explore in, or book a beginners’ hack at one of the stables. Don’t forget to make time for a proper ploughman’s lunch at the Royal Oak in Fritham.
How far? 90 miles
Get there One hour 30 minutes by train from Waterloo to Brockenhurst; around two hours by car. Just remember that animals, not drivers, have right of way here.
7. Rye
The antique shops and higgledy-piggledy cobbled lanes of Rye make it feel like a little slice of the Cotswolds on the coast. After you’ve satisfactorily browsed around the accurately named Tiny Book Store, treat yourself to a seafood lunch surrounded by lobster pots at Globe Inn Marsh, followed by Sussex real ale or a glass of local wine at The George. The Chapel Down vineyard is just up the road and well worth a visit if you want to know the ins and outs of wine-making – or simply enjoy a tipple with their signature wine tasting. Ten minutes away are the pillowy dunes of Camber Sands: roll your trousers up and splash through the shallows, take a kite for a spin or just park your towel and stretch out.
How far? 79 miles.
Get there One hour 10 minutes by train from St Pancras International (with a change at Ashford); around two hours by car.
8. Box Hill
Biking to green and pleasant Surrey is a wheely nice way to spend a Sunday (sorry) – plus, Box Hill was part of the 2012 Olympic road-cycling route. Start in Richmond Park and pedal down past Hampton Court – it should take you about two hours. After a 1.6 mile climb and some hairpin bends (easier than it sounds!), you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of the North Downs from the top of Box Hill. Grab a slice of cake from the National Trust café, and save space for lunch at The Tree, which serves homemade pies and crumbles. Your last stop is Box Hill and Westhumble station, where you can load your bikes on to a train back to Waterloo. Whew!
How far? 30 miles
Get there Two hours by bike (obviously). Plan the route carefully before you set out, and take a map and a puncture repair kit, plus water and snacks.
9. Bath
A glorious water-themed day awaits you in the city of Bath . Start as you mean to go on with a tour of the Romans baths (no paddling allowed, you’ve been warned), before making a splash in the Thermae Bath Spa – the rooftop pool has stunning views of the city. Once you’ve dried off, make like Jane Austen and stroll along the Royal Crescent. Peckish? Sally Lunn’s teahouse is home to the Sally Lunn Bun, a kind of sweet brioche bap – for a Bath take on the cream tea, order one toasted and spread with strawberry jam and clotted cream.
How far? 115 miles
Get there One hour 30 minutes by train from Paddington; two hours 30 minutes by car.
10. Mersea Island
Attached to the mainland by a causeway that floods (and pub quizzers, take note: this is the UK’s most easterly inhabited island), Mersea feels properly remote at high tide. The big draw is The Company Shed, which serves seafood platters that pull in crowds from all over the country every weekend. It’s BYOB – bring your own bread – and they don’t take bookings, so get there before noon to make sure you can feast on prawns, smoked fish, oysters and dressed crab. Speaking of which, catch-and-release crabbing is encouraged – there are specially marked areas near the water, and shops selling the kit. Or you can book a boat trip around the bay.
How far? 69 miles
Get there One hour by train from Liverpool Street to Colchester, then a 45-minute bus to Mersea Island; around two hours by car. D on’t forget to check the tide timetable before you set off...

Long weekend breaks from the UK: 10 places you can easily squeeze into 72 hours
By Emma Love
The UK 's numerous bank holidays during spring and summer are the ideal excuse to book a couple of days away, whether it's a weekend break in the UK , somewhere in Europe or beyond. Whether you want super-soft sandy beaches, an unpredictable art scene or Michelin-star restaurants, these destinations – from breathtaking lakes to big-wave surf spots – are all within five hours of London . May you never waste an extra day off at home again…
Santorini, Greece
Best for: a blast of Greek-island dreaminess
Santorini ’s surreal setting – a volcanic island topped with towns the colour of icing sugar – never fails to inspire. There are craggy coves, a handful of beaches (black sand on the east coast, and the famous Red Beach with dramatic, rust-coloured cliffs in the south) and vineyards (this is one of the oldest wine-producing regions in the world). If you’re feeling fit, it’s worth hiking the six-mile clifftop trail between Fira and Oia, where everyone gathers to browse the funky boutiques and watch the sun set.
Where to stay: Perivolas , a series of white cliffside houses with terraced gardens and a pool – utterly peaceful yet within walking distance of Oia. See our guide to the best hotels in Santorini for more. Flight time: 3h 50min from London Gatwick.
Ile de Ré, France
Best for: slowing everything down
This flat-as-a-pancake strip of land on the Atlantic coast is a firm Parisian holiday favourite for its joyfully unhurried pace of life. A cluster of pretty French villages with tiny ports are strung together by cycle paths (everyone cycles here) that weave past salt marshes and oyster farms, wildflower meadows and the fortified walls of UNESCO World Heritage St-Martin-de-Ré. Feast on mussels or bloody steak for dinner in family-run restaurants. Nothing much changes and that’s exactly the charm of the place. Read more about Il de Ré .
Where to stay: Hôtel le Sénéchal in Ars-en-Ré, where simple rooms are arranged around a courtyard garden. Flight time: 1h 35min from London Stansted to La Rochelle, then a 40min drive.
Ibiza, Spain
Best for: knockout beaches
From sheltered bays backed by pine trees (Cala Xarraca, Es Portitxol) to swathes of sand with music-blaring bars full of party people (Las Salinas), the White Isle has a beach to suit everyone . Head to Punta Galera to watch the cliff-jumping and stay for the sunset vistas; Cala Gracioneta is a destination cove for long, lazy paella lunches washed down with ice-cold chilli coconut Mojitos at El Chiringuito beach club.
Where to stay: Legado Ibiza Finca , a freshly revamped B&B in the hills, a stone’s throw from Santa Eulària. For more recommendations, see our round up of the best hotels on Ibiza . Flight time: 2h 25min from London Gatwick.
NAPLES, ITALY
Best for: the world’s tastiest pizza and sunny island day trips
There’s never been a better time to visit Naples . Finally leaving its dangerous reputation behind, Southern Italy ’s largest city is experiencing a cultural renaissance. It has a rich history, some of the country’s tastiest food and, best of all, balmy weather with temperatures that rarely drop below 10 degrees. Spend a long weekend ordering Neapolitan dishes, from thick-crust pizza and freshly caught octopus in family-run trattorias to exquisite plates in critically acclaimed restaurants – Naples has more Michelin stars than any other Italian city. Plus, day trips from the harbour take you to some of Italy’s prettiest islands : glitzy Capri , quiet Ischia , tiny Procida and retro Ponza. Olivia Morelli
Where to stay: SuperOtium in Rione Sanità , a B&B and art gallery where you can start exploring Naples’ buzzy art scene – there is a permanent artist in residence and the hotel regularly hosts in-house shows. Flight time: 2h 40mins from London airports
Biarritz, France
Best for: world-class surfing
One of Europe ’s top surfing spots for more than half a century, Biarritz benefits from the underwater reefs that transform swell into big waves on the Côte des Basques beach all year round. Big-name brands and local labels all have surf shops here, and there are plenty of schools for beginners that will have you standing up on a board in a weekend. Crowds gather for the international pro competitions that take place throughout the summer: the ISA World Longboard Surfing Championship is typically held here from the end of May to early June . Read more about things to do in Biarritz, France.
Where to stay: The grand Regina Hotel & Spa , a Belle Époque style building facing the ocean with views of Biarritz lighthouse and the Basque coast. Flight time: 2h from London Stansted.
Lake Como, Italy
Best for: a beautifully smart lake escape
There’s something special about upside-down Y-shaped Lake Como , where neoclassical villas with neat gardens and elegant waterfront towns line the shores – which is why chic Milanese and Hollywood A-listers have been flocking here for years. Hire a Riva motorboat and hop between three of the best – Bellagio, Menaggio and Varenna – at the point before the two lower branches of the lake separate, stopping for an iced espresso and people-watching in one of the several bustling harbour squares.
Where to stay: Contemporary Il Sereno , designed by the prolific Patricia Urquiola, was a game-changer for Lake Como when it opened in 2016. Flight time: 2h from London Gatwick to Milan Malpensa, then 1h train ride to Como (change at Saronno).
Megéve, France
Best for: hiking in the Alps
The ski-resort village of Megève makes a brilliant base for hiking and mountain biking in the spring and summer. There are plenty of routes, depending on fitness level and desired length. Highlights include a short walk through shady forests to La Belle au Bois waterfall and an all-day trek to the Christomet ski lift via lush Alpine pastures. The views of the mountains, including the Mont Blanc range, are breathtaking.
Where to stay: Les Fermes de Marie , Jocelyn Sibuet’s smart chalet hotel which put Megève on the map when it opened 40 years ago. Flight time: 1h 45min from London Heathrow to Geneva, then a 1h 15min drive.
San Sebastián, Spain
Best for: dedicated foodies
This globally renowned gourmet hotspot has an impressive 18 Michelin stars (one of the highest densities per square metre in the world), three of which are held by trailblazing chef Elena Arzak . Plus there’s a new wave of San Sebastián restaurants with exciting young chefs at the helm, and the back streets of the old town are packed with pintxos bars (sample a couple of dishes at each, then move on). One of the most popular (and rightly so) is Bar Néstor where there are only a handful of items on the menu – focusing on steak, Padrón peppers and tomatoes – and everyone eats standing up at the counter.
Where to stay: Villa Soro , a 19th-century villa-turned-hotel with classic rooms, just 10 minutes from Zurriola beach. Flight time: 2h from London Stansted to Biarritz, then a 45min drive.

Tel Aviv, Israel
Best for: incredible nightlife
The first thing most people do when they land in this good-time city on Israel’ s Mediterranean coast is head to the beach. The second is to head to the bars. Nothing really gets going until midnight, after dinner outside at one of the many innovative restaurants that are bringing a new energy to the ancient port of Jaffa. For those who want to shop their way out of a sore head, don’t miss the cool fashion boutiques in Neve Tzedek.
Where to stay: The Jaffa , last year’s hotly anticipated hotel opening which cemented the area’s reputation as Tel Aviv 's most up-and-coming spot. Flight time: 4h 50min from London Heathrow.
Marrakech, Morocco
Best for: a surprising ancient-modern city
Marrakech is an enthralling place of contrasts: a warren of souks, each dedicated to a single artisanal craft (silverware, spices, leather) in the ancient medina where half the fun is losing your bearings, and the colourful spaces of Jardin Majorelle. There is also a bunch of noteworthy bistros (a world away from the Jemaa el-Fnaa night market where stallholders tout for business) and hip fashion boutiques, as well as the Yves Saint Laurent Museum, dedicated to the work of the legendary fashion designer.
Where to stay: Owned by designer Jasper Conran, L’Hôtel Marrakech is an antique-filled riad in the medina with a courtyard garden and pool. Flight time: 3h 45min from London Gatwick.

Both main parties now think Sadiq Khan has won a narrow victory in the London mayoral race, despite "wild rumours". Andy Street is also likely to hang on to the West Midlands mayoralty, despite Tory defeats across the country. Follow results and reaction live.

- Vote 2024: Council results in full | Mayoral results as they happen | Labour will fail to gain overall majority based on council election results - projection
- Live reporting by Ben Bloch
We spoke a short while ago with Labour deputy national campaign coordinator Ellie Reeves, and we started by asking if she is confident of a general election victory after yesterday's set of council results.
She said Labour is "very pleased" so far, but added that there's "never any complacency".
"We fought for every vote in the fantastic by-election result in Blackpool South and in local elections around the country and in the mayoral elections," she said, adding that the results show that "voters are putting their trust in us again".
Sky's Anna Jones pointed out that Labour's local elections vote share has not actually improved on last year, but Ms Reeves pointed to the Blackpool by-election win and East Midlands mayoralty win, saying that's "a good barometer of the mood".
Pushed on if there are any concerns in Labour, she argued that they are winning in areas that they need at a general election "in order to form a government".
After a bumper set of local elections results, Beth Rigby, Ruth Davidson and Jess Phillips pull apart the local election results we have so far.
They discuss what big council losses for the Conservatives could mean for the Rishi Sunak narrative. How does the re-election of Ben Houchen as Tees Valley mayor help him?
Also – are there some niggles for Labour within the results, especially with Muslim communities? Jess explains what she thinks the impact of the Middle East conflict could be in Birmingham.
Plus, all three discuss John Swinney as a contender for Scotland's first minister.

We went into this set of local and mayoral elections with two big questions: Is Labour on course for a majority and how bad is it going to be for Rishi Sunak?
On the Sunak question, it's a very clear-cut story.
The Tories are having as bad a night as their worst nightmare.
There is a 19-point drop in the Conservative vote compared with the 2019 general election - one of its worst performances ever.
But it's not an all-out win for Labour, either.
Read more from our political editor Beth Rigby below...
As we've been reporting, rumours have swirled since polls closed on Thursday that Sadiq Khan may have suffered a shock defeat to Tory candidate Susan Hall.
However, Sky News correspondents understand that key figures in both parties now believe the Labour incumbent will just about cling on.
Sky's deputy political editor Sam Coates said Labour MPs were more confident yesterday evening that Sadiq Khan has "squeaked" the election.
Figures close to Ms Hall said yesterday she was in with a chance of being named winner when results are announced later today.
But Sam Coates said there has been a "shift" in the wake of the turnout results being published, showing it was not as low as initially feared in Labour circles.
"Both Labour and key Conservative MPs now do think Sadiq Khan will have squeaked it tomorrow," he said.
"There are a lot fewer jitters than there were a few hours ago."
Labour sources have also suggested to our political correspondent Rob Powell that rumours of Sadiq Khan's potential defeat may be exaggerated.
One said the "the fundamentals are good" while acknowledging "no one can possibly know the outcome of the vote at this stage" because counting had not commenced.
Another insider said: "It will be tight, but I think some rumours are a little wild."
If you're just catching up after a flurry of results yesterday, our political correspondent Serena Barker-Singh can get you up to speed in just one a minute.
After a flood of local elections results through the day yesterday, we are expecting some key races to be declared later today.
Mayoralties
Counting will start in the London mayoral race at 9am - and is expected to take until the evening for a final result.
The West Midlands contest will also be declared this afternoon - we are expecting the result around 2pm.
We will also get results from:
- Liverpool City Region around midday;
- South Yorkshire around 1pm;
- Greater Manchester around 2pm;
- West Yorkshire around 3.30pm;
- Salford around 7pm.
London Assembly
We will get results from fourteen London constituencies.
There will also be the results from the London-wide top-up list that will elect another 11 assembly members.
These are expected to be declared throughout the day, and we'll bring you those as we get them.
Results in four council races are expected to be declared today:
- North Tyneside;
- Warrington;
- Epping Forest (most ward results have already been announced).
A further eight police and crime commissioners will also be revealed.
The Conservative Party has suffered its worst electoral defeat in years, losing more than half of its councillors who stood for re-election across England.
Labour hailed a "truly historic" result in Rishi Sunak's own backyard of York and North Yorkshire, where David Skaith smashed Tory Keane Duncan by almost 15,000 votes.
The region, which was electing a mayor for the first time, covers Mr Sunak's Richmond constituency and is an area Labour has historically struggled to compete in.
Sir Keir Starmer, the Labour leader, renewed his demand that the prime minister call a general election.
The party also had successes in the North East and East Midlands mayoral votes and in the Blackpool by-election.
There was a sliver of hope for the government, with Lord Ben Houtchen holding on to his role as the mayor of Tees Valley.
This victory is likely to have quelled talk of rebellion among disenchanted Tory MPs who had threatened to oust the prime minister if the results proved a disaster, but it remains to be seen whether the Tories can hold on to the West Midlands mayoralty.
Labour's Sadiq Khan is also attempting to secure re-election in London.

Good morning!
Welcome back to the Politics Hub and our coverage of the 2024 local elections results.
It is the second day when we are expecting key races to be declared after Conservative support cratered across the country.
All eyes today are on the mayoral races - most notably in London and the West Midlands , both of which appear to be on a knife-edge.
Here is what you need to know for the day ahead:
- After some rumours of a potential defeat by Tory candidate Susan Hall yesterday, incumbent Labour London mayor Sadiq Khan is thought to be on track to retain his post for a third term - but it could be very close;
- Counting will get under way at 9am, and we are expecting the result later tonight , and we'll bring you updates here as the counting progresses;
- The race to be the next mayor of the West Midlands is also thought to be on a knife-edge, with incumbent Conservative mayor Andy Street fighting for a third term against Labour's Richard Parker ;
- It is thought that Mr Street has just about done enough to keep his job for another four years, but it is also likely to be close - we're expecting that result around 2pm ;
- We will also get results from mayoral races in Greater Manchester, West Yorkshire, Liverpool City Region, South Yorkshire and Salford;
- The London Assembly results will be declared throughout the day, as well as four more councils and eight police and crime commissioner roles, with results expected through the afternoon from around noon;
- We're expecting to hear from the Labour leader, Sir Keir Starmer , at some point today, and PM Rishi Sunak is likely to be out and about as well, so we'll bring you their comments as they come in;
- And we'll bring you all the reaction and analysis to the results throughout the day.
We'll be discussing all of this and more with:
- Ellie Reeves , Labour's deputy campaign coordinator, at 7.10am ;
- Andrew Griffith , science minister, at 8.15am .
Follow along for live coverage throughout the day of the local elections results, the fallout, and analysis from our experts.
The final election result for today has been declared - but there will be more to come on Saturday.
Seven mayoral contests will be announced: London, West Midlands, Greater Manchester, West Yorkshire, Liverpool City Region, South Yorkshire and Salford.
Fourteen London constituencies will also be announced, along with the London-wide top-up list that will elect another 11 assembly members.
Plus, four councils should be declared - North Tyneside, Stroud, Warrington and Epping Forest, where most of the results have already been announced.
A further eight police and crime commissioners will be revealed.
Over the course of last night and today, Labour has gained nine police and crime commissioner (PCC) posts from the Conservatives.
The party also held five posts, with another 10 to be declared over the weekend.
This means Labour holds 14 PCCs and the Conservatives 12, while Plaid Cymru has retained Dyfed-Powys.
While these elections get much less attention than those for mayors, councils and the London Assembly, they could be significant as they include many of the shires that traditionally lean towards the Conservatives.
