BREAKING: 2024 Free Dining at Disney World Returns Soon!

disney tourist blog january 2024

Walt Disney World has announced that the Free Dining Plan discount will return select travel dates in July, September, and December 2024. Here’s what we know so far, plus tips & tricks for booking, other special offers expected to be released on this date, and commentary about this discount.

For those of you who have been following along the speculation in our Guide to 2024 Free Dining at Walt Disney World , this should be unsurprising. In that, we point back to the 2019 playbook, when there were three waves of the discount released–to different groups (general public vs. Disney Visa) and different date ranges. Back then, the third wave of Free Dining–which was the one that included dates for September, November and December–was released in mid-July.

Our prediction there was that Walt Disney World would release a ‘second wave’ of Free Dining in late March 2024 that covers the exact same dates (or a similar set) as the previous subscriber offer. That also predicted the possibility of limited dates in October and November, but with the bulk of options in September and December. We also said that there could be as many as 4 waves, or as few as 2 with it never reaching the general public if the Disney+ and (potentially) Disney Visa targeted offers booked up well enough.

It would now seem that portions of that prediction are incorrect and parts are correct. Obviously, the next wave is not coming out in late March 2024, as that’s in the past. Somehow I doubt there’s a flux capacitor involved in this promo.

And given that Walt Disney World is stating that the travel dates will be in July, September, and December, it’s probably safe to rule out the months that are not those. (Although it is interesting to me that August fell off the list but July is still an option. I would not have seen that curveball coming. It’s totally unsurprising that October and November aren’t going to be included; minus a few weeks, those months usually have strong bookings.)

In any case, here’s the official announcement from Walt Disney World:

disney tourist blog january 2024

Beginning April 9, Disney Visa Cardmembers can get a Free Disney Dining Plan when purchasing a non-discounted 4-night, 4-day Walt Disney Travel Company package that includes a room at a select Walt Disney World Resort hotel and theme park ticket with a Park Hopper option.

Full details will be released on the morning of April 9, 2024.

That’s all we know. Nothing about participating resorts, excluded room categories, or which tier(s) of the Dining Plan will be offered to Values/Moderates and Deluxe/Villa Resorts. Our expectation is that this will all largely be unchanged since the first round of Free Dining in 2024, but who knows. I would also expect there generally to be less availability for July, as that was included in the last round of promos, it’s part of summer travel season, and it’s sooner.

2024 Free Dining Info & Tips

If you’re looking for the regular “rules” of Free Dining, the past precedent for these is covered in our comprehensive Guide to 2024 Free Dining at Walt Disney World . (Scroll past the long section of predictions, since those are no longer relevant now that Walt Disney World has told us the deal is coming.)

The most notable “rule” of Free Dining is that Value and Moderate Resort guests receive the Quick Service Disney Dining Plan (QSDDP), while Deluxe and Deluxe Villa guests receive the standard Disney Dining Plan (DDP). The latter has much more value, but Deluxe Resorts also cost a ton more money on average. In the past, guests at the lower tier resorts have been able to pay the difference to upgrade from the QSDDP to the DDP.

For those wondering what time Free Dining will be available on April 9, that’s unknown. In the past, discounts have gone live online at random times very early in the morning–not at a set time like midnight, 6 a.m. or 8 a.m. If I recall correctly, the first wave this year went live at like 3:45 a.m. Eastern.

disney tourist blog january 2024

Beyond that, expect pretty much the same terms and conditions as the first wave of 2024 Free Dining, just swap Disney+ stuff for Disney Visa stuff. Table service restaurants may have limited or no availability at time of package purchase (a common complaint with Free Dining in past years has been the lack of ADRs for those who arrived without booking anything in advance).

Free Dining cannot be combined with any other discount or promotion. Disney Dining Plans exclude gratuities, which will need to be paid out of pocket at table service restaurants. Children ages 3 to 9 must order from a children’s menu, where available. The number of packages allocated for this offer is limited. Everyone in the same room must be on the same package.

The first Free Dining offer excluded the following room types: 3-Bedroom Villas, The Campsites at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort, Cabins at Copper Creek Villas & Cabins at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge and Bungalows at Polynesian Villas & Bungalows.

Additional eligibility details usually include the requirement that you use a valid Disney Visa Card or Disney Rewards Redemption Card to pay the deposit, and that the Disney Visa Cardmember must stay in the room.

disney tourist blog january 2024

One thing that surprised me about the first wave of Free Dining in January was that it really wasn’t that popular at first. I expected multi-hour waits on the phone lines and a lengthy virtual queue. Instead, it was pretty much smooth sailing on drop day.

Part of that is probably attributable to it being a targeted offer. It could also be the case that since the dates were known in advance, only those traveling due the relevant timeframes logged onto the website. Nevertheless, I expected a ton of pent-up demand for Free Dining…and there really wasn’t. Not that I’m complaining–I just anticipated chaos and that didn’t happen.

As such, I wouldn’t expect things to be too terrible when this second wave of Free Dining for Disney Visa cardmembers launches on April 9, 2024. Now, Disney IT being Disney IT, there is  always  the propensity for problems or random issues that delay the process for hours. So who really knows.

disney tourist blog january 2024

Regardless, you will almost certainly encounter a virtual queue if attempting to book Free Dining first thing in the morning on April 9, 2024.

We’d also expect that the phone lines to be busy all day and the website will experience long waits. That “You’re Almost into Orbit” screen is a nice move that’ll hopefully work as intended. We’d expect those waits to skyrocket once more people are awake on the East Coast. For a wait time of under 30 minutes, you need to be up and online before 6 a.m. It’s also likely that there will be glitches, with Stitch eating the occasional page.

This shouldn’t come as a huge surprise, as it’s more or less par for the course on Walt Disney World discount drop day and has been for years. Things will only get worse as more people wake up and try to book (which is a huge reason why we recommend just using a travel agent). This is to say you will want to book ASAP for the best chance at scoring the resort and room you want.

disney tourist blog january 2024

For what it’s worth, getting something booked before the promo is released does NOT mean that you can sleep in when Free Dining goes live on April 9. In order to apply the special offer, not only do your dates and resort need to be eligible, but there also needs to be room inventory for what you’ve booked under the promotion.

This requirement often trips up a lot of trip planners. What it means is that, if a resort/room category/date combo sells out under the Free Dining promotion (and only so much inventory is allocated to the deal–it’s possible for the promo to sell out while full priced rooms are still available), it doesn’t matter that you’ve already booked it. You will not be able to apply the discount to your reservation.

For this reason, there’s really not much of an advantage to booking something ahead of time. Free Dining diehards will debate this point (and have for years)–but the salient point is that you shouldn’t book now and sit back, assuming you’ll be able to apply Free Dining to an existing reservation at your leisure days or weeks down the road. That will not work.

disney tourist blog january 2024

As for why Free Dining is being offered for July, September and December but not other months, the answer is always hotel occupancy. We want to once again reiterate that Walt Disney World does not offer any promotion out of corporate generosity. The Disney Dining Plan is “given away” to entice guests to travel at times of year that have lower hotel occupancy rates.

You might wonder why Walt Disney World is giving the discount to tourists taking week-long vacations during the heart of the summer season but not August as schools go back into session. Well, the second part of that is honestly a head-scratcher to me. It’s not like August is suddenly becoming busier–last year’s triple-digit temperatures were not good “free advertising” for August. I can answer the July part, though: summer ceased being peak season a long time ago.

We discussed that phenomenon at length at the time, but in a nutshell, the reasons for this were ticket blockouts, higher hotel rack rates, and travel over a holiday weekend being more expensive (airfare, gas) generally. Many Americans also might actively avoid those weeks because of the reputation that these are the peak of the busy summer season. (At least at Walt Disney World, they aren’t.) That belief coupled with higher costs might necessitate some discounting.

It’s actually a similar story in December, especially around Christmas. For a few years–even during the peak of pent-up demand when fewer dates were discounted–we noticed more deals in the 2 weeks leading up to Christmas. In our view, that’s largely because Walt Disney World has “overshot” with hotel prices, and doesn’t want to actually lower rack rates…so they use deals to bridge the gap.

To that point, there’s no such thing as a free lunch– you receive the Disney Dining Plan for “free” because you pay full price for your hotel room and park tickets. This is also why Free Dining is often not such a great deal. For many families, taking the room-only discount is superior. Always do the math, because the comparative value varies based upon resort, party size, and eating preferences.

disney tourist blog january 2024

As for forward-looking predictions about subsequent waves of Free Dining for 2024 at Walt Disney World, I do think this is probably the end of the special offer for this year. With this offer including travel dates in December–the 12th month of the year–this deal is already at the end of the calendar. Normally, special offers occur on a timeline.

However, that doesn’t mean a third wave of Free Dining is impossible. If you look back to the 2019 playbook, there were three waves of the discount released–to different groups (general public vs. Disney Visa) and different date ranges. The only reason I could see a third wave this year is if Walt Disney World occupancy targets end up falling well short of expectations for August through November, and they need to scramble to offer something last minute.

To be clear, I do  not  think this is what’s going to happen. However, Walt Disney World has really been toying with the way they’ve been doing discounts, trying to entice planners to book early with attractive offers. In several cases, they’ve circled back with additional discounts even after those offers have ended in order to fill unsold rooms and hit occupancy targets.

(If you read the latest update at the top of All Current Discounts at Walt Disney World , you should be aware of how they’ve gotten more aggressive with discounts in 2024, but also are more strategic about ending them early. See the “Now Booking” button instead of specified end dates.)

disney tourist blog january 2024

Finally, we’ll end with a plug. We will be closely monitoring the 2024 Walt Disney World discount situation, keeping our ears open for more news about other special offers. Although nothing else has been announced for April 9, it stands to reason that Free Dining will NOT be the only discount to drop on that date. Should anything be released or rumored, we’ll send you an alert if you sign up for our FREE Walt Disney World newsletter.

We’ve always notified subscribers about discounts early in the morning once they’re released–while they were live but before Walt Disney World officially announced them–on countless occasions in the last decade. All of this may not seem like much, but a heads up of even a day or a few hours can be the difference between successfully booking or not–or at least not being stuck in a virtual queue for hours!

If you’re already overwhelmed, you might just want someone else to do the work for you. Free Dining is Walt Disney World’s most complicated promotion, and can be a huge headache to book. Between limited availability and navigating a sea of rules and restrictions, it’s easy to get frustrated, have problems, or be unsuccessful in scoring a reservation.

To that end, we always recommend that Walt Disney World first-timers or regulars who just don’t want to deal with the hassle use a travel agent. ( Click here to request a free quote from Be Our Guest Vacations, an Authorized Disney Travel Planner that we recommend .) Most legit travel agents do not charge for booking Walt Disney World vacations (and you don’t pay a premium to use them–Disney pays them commission, so they’re free to you), so that’s really the easiest way to go. But if you’re going to go that route for Free Dining, you need to do so ASAP. Don’t expect to request a quote on the morning of April 9 and receive an immediate response–you need to get your ducks in a row now.

Do you think there will be any room only discounts in early October (first week)?

' src=

My mom is the primary Visa card holder and then I am the secondary with a card in my name. Would I be able to use it or would she have to be there?

' src=

Great info! Waiting patiently for an AI travel agent to prevent Disney from emptying my pockets by giving me free things.

' src=

Never mind the 2024 Free Dining, Disney have just announced Free Dining in 2025 for UK visitors! Seems a similar deal to that offered in 2019, with the ‘free’ Disney dollars replaced with a £300 per booking discount if you book by 2 July 2024.

' src=

If I already have a package booked in December that turns out to meet the requirements of the free dining, but I booked the deposit with a gift card – would I need to rebook on these dates with my Disney visa to secure the offer? I am already a visa cardholder so trying to determine the best way to secure the discount!

' src=

I have the same question. I booked a reservation already for December. Should I actually cancel and rebook the day the deal goes live? Or can I modify my reservation and add the free dining as soon as it’s available? I’m a Disney visa cardholder but I booked the reservation months ago with a different card! Any help or feedback be sooo appreciated!!

' src=

Hi Tom, I was hoping that there would be more UK offers for this summer but a new Free Dining & Drinks Deal has just dropped for next year so it’s looking unlikely. We were looking to book for either this summer or Christmas but the prices are crazy high even with the 4 nights free promo that has just ended. It’s the £5,000 flight costs for our family of 5 that really pushes the price up. We may have to go via the DVC route but may be tempted for next year. When we first went to Disney in 2018 and stayed at Port Orleans we ended up taking back a table full of snacks! We really didn’t maximise the free dining then.

' src=

Having to purchase park hopper makes this deal not appealing.

' src=

We are thinking the 4 days for $99. A day tickets non park hopper may be the better deal for us in September . Of course it will depend on room rates at that time . Can’t wait to compare prices .

' src=

My family took advantage of a dining promotion Disney offered late last year, 2023, on travel packages booked before Dec. 7th with traveling completed before March 21st, 2024. Disney offered Dining Promo Card which was basically a $360 gift card per paying guest. With four adults and a toddler, we used this dining gift card for everytime…all our table service at the parks and Disney springs, character meal, quick service at the parks and at our resort, as well as any snacks/drinks we bought at our resort and we’re able to stuff in our bags and backpacks to have on park days. We were there for 7 days and never had to pay for anything we ate or drank. Of the dining plans Disney is currently or planning on offering, I hope they do this promo dining gift card again.

' src=

We are from the uk when we booked our 14 day park hopper tickets for this September we got $50 per day dining credit and a $200 gift card credit. Apparently the whole amount is loaded to a card so we can choose where and when to use it. Never had this before so will be interesting to see how it pans out!

' src=

We are also going in September 2024 from the UK. I was just about to book 14 day park hopper for Disney on ‘attraction tickets’ but can’t find anything about your deal. There are 6 adults in our party so your deal sounds like a good one. Many thanks.

' src=

Same here Sue. We booked last June for this November and have $1400 dining and merchandise credit to collect when we arrive. I think this is even more flexible for the way we eat and can mix and match quick service and table service location as and when. Enjoy your holiday .

' src=

Hoping they release the fall room only discounts April 9. 🙂 Thanks for the heads up Tom!

' src=

Tom, we are currently booked with the Free Dining offer for Disney+ subscribers but want to change resorts. What are the chances of free dining being released to the public so we can still take advantage of free dining but change the resort we are currently booked at.

' src=

Any predictions on what dates for December. I was hoping for 11/30 start date

' src=

me too! we check in November 30. wondering how that affects us

' src=

The free dining promotion has been a no go for us since they bumped the Moderate resorts down to the quick service plan years ago. Still good to see the special offers continuing to arrive. Our family is eagerly awaiting the anticipated fall room discounts to be released.

' src=

We can’t get a Disney Visa card because we live in Canada. We used to book a deal with free dining plan open to all consumers near the end of November and into early December. We stayed at Pop Century and enjoyed the Quick Service dining plan. We were happy to only occasionally pay for a meal at the occasional table Service meal We would bother to take the time for. We often felt 2 quick service meals a day were enough and used our snack credits for breakfast or lunch. The last time we had a WDW vacation, after many years of coming regularly for a yearly holiday, was almost 8 years ago now. Between WDW constantly raising prices and covid there wasn’t a good time for us to go back. Now I’ve booked a WDW pkg with free dining on the Disney + members promotion but the latest we could book our trip was the last 10 days of September. We would have preferred the last week of November for better weather and all around just better timing for us but it wasn’t available for the Disney + members free dining promotion. It’s a lot more expensive for us to visit now, and we have a lot less perks, like no more free fast passes, no more extended evening hours for Value resorts, and our dollar exchange rates are taking a big hit on our wallets also. We’re having a hard time saving up enough money for this vacation and I’m afraid it will be our last trip to WDW. We never would have stayed at Deluxe resorts as we dont feel they’re in any way worth the overpriced high prices they charge just for a place to sleep. For the amount of time we spend in a hotel room the Pop Century was great for us. We’re considered upper middle class for our income in Canada. The prices have just gotten so high at WDW and theres so many extras you have to pay for now. Was really sad to hear when they canceled the airport transportation that used to be included in our pkg. There are so many more affordable vacation options out there. It’s very sad, but I think we’ve been priced out of their consumer target. This year will very likely be our last ever WDW vacation. And Ive stopped recommending it as a vacation to family and friends. Way overpriced and just not as enjoyable anymore. Hope the weather isn’t too crazy in September. Sure wish we could get a dining promo in November/December like we used to instead.

' src=

When did crowds pick up last year during July? Was it mid-July or was it later in the month?

I have no idea how I would predict July crowds with most historical data saying one thing, but with last year saying another. I guess current reservations are pointing to a repeat of 2023?

' src=

Have you ever tried to get ducks in a row?

' src=

No, but I’m a prolific cat herder. Same deal, no?

' src=

Do you have a prediction for when Annual Passholder resort discounts will drop for Fall 2024?

' src=

The 35% off bounce back offer is better for us (2). We would never eat that much food, one TS each day is more than what we want to do (did the deluxe DP once before and said never again). And we don’t need hoppers. People really need to run the numbers, it’s not always as good of a “discount” as it first appears to be.

' src=

Good news for people who eat a lot I guess – personally I prefer the deluxe hotel discounts

The January Advantage: Disney World 2025

Before we dive into specifics like crowd sizes, costs, and weather, let’s highlight the primary benefit of visiting Disney World in January 2025.

One of January’s biggest advantages is that it’s budget-friendly . It ranks as one of the most economical times to visit Disney World. The absolute lowest hotel rates are usually found in January (and early February), which sets the stage for budget-conscious travelers. Additionally, park tickets are often cheaper in January. So, if budget is a concern, January stands as an ideal time to enjoy the enchantment of Disney World without financial strain.

Beyond the cost benefits, January holds other perks for your Disney World journey. The weather is typically cool and comfortable , providing a pleasant environment for park exploration. Furthermore, January witnesses unique events such as the Walt Disney World Marathon, offering an additional layer of excitement to your visit.

Key Dates for Disney World in January 2025

Tasty, artsy dishes are a hallmark of the EPCOT International Festival of the Arts

There are several important dates to keep in mind as you plan your Disney World visit in January 2025. The most noteworthy are:

  • December 27, 2024 – January 2, 2025 : This period covers the New Year’s holiday and the weekend before, which is usually characterized by festive crowd levels that extend from Disney World’s Christmas season . Holiday celebrations usually wind down before the weekend.
  • January 8 – 12, 2025 : During this period, the Walt Disney World Marathon takes place. As a non-runner, visiting during the marathon weekend has its advantages and disadvantages (as we explain below).
  • January 10 or 17, 2025 (Estimate) : The Epcot International Festival of the Arts typically begins on a Friday around the middle of January and runs through late February (2024’s festival dates were January 12 – February 19, 2024). The event offers guests a chance to immerse themselves in the world of visual, culinary, and performing arts.
  • January 17 – 21, 2025 : In 2025, Martin Luther King Jr. Day falls on Monday, January 20. Those who don’t like crowds should avoid this long weekend due to the high number of guests before and after the holiday.

These dates can help you plan your Disney World visit in January 2025. As a general rule, higher prices, long lines, and other fluctuations are expected during these periods.

Disney World Key Events in January 2025

Disney World greets January with the lively remnants of the holiday season and the reverberating energy of New Year’s celebrations. Once the New Year’s Day crowd dissipates, the park enters a new phase of excitement.

Scheduled from January 8 to January 12, 2025, the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend is a significant event that ushers in operational changes across the resort. It is interesting to note that despite its large scale, this event (and time of year) tends to reduce general crowd levels, making the park more relaxed.

Decorations also add to the festive atmosphere during this month. Magic Kingdom typically keeps its Christmas décor until the Marathon weekend concludes. However, other parks might start dismantling their festive trimmings slightly earlier.

The Epcot International Festival of the Arts begins in mid-January , bringing a splash of creativity to Epcot. This festival, a relatively new addition to Disney’s roster of events, provides a wide range of artistic activities that transform the park into an enchanting canvas of creativity.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day , falling in the latter half of January, traditionally ushers in increased crowds from the preceding Friday through to Tuesday, primarily over the weekend. These crowds can be quite significant, making it advisable to avoid this weekend if possible.

Lastly, the ESPN Wide World of Sports usually hosts a few events over the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend . These activities tend to boost visitor numbers at Disney Value Resorts, particularly All-Star Sports.

Important Considerations for Disney World in January 2025

There are a few key factors to keep in mind when planning your Disney World trip in January 2025.

First and foremost, if your budget is tight, you’re in luck. Disney World hotels are often at their lowest prices during the month of January, with lower theme park ticket prices, too . Therefore, a trip to Disney World in January 2025 can also be a great financial move. Price drops usually last until early February before rising around President’s Day.

Secondly, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure will be operational by January 2025 . This exciting new attraction replaces Magic Kingdom’s iconic Splash Mountain, opening in Summer 2024. Even allowing for any potential construction delays, it should be completely up and running by January 2025.

Disney World Weather in January: What to Expect

Disney World sees the chill of winter in January, with average highs around 72 degrees Fahrenheit (22 degrees Celsius) and average lows around 48 degrees Fahrenheit (9 degrees Celsius). Despite this being Florida’s cold season, it’s considerably mild compared to the winter weather in many other parts of the world.

Graph showing the average high and low temperature for each month of the year at the Kissimmee monitoring station near Walt Disney World (Source: National Weather Service)

Chilly Weather : Interestingly, the cold in Florida feels different, possibly due to the general warmth during the day, the humidity, or the amount of time spent stationary while waiting in lines or watching shows. Therefore, even if the forecast only indicates “cool” temperatures, it’s a good idea to pack some extra layers to guard against the chill.

Heat Considerations : Given that the intense Florida heat typically seen in the summer months is rarely a concern in January, this is the perfect time of year to enjoy outdoor attractions at Disney World. Be sure to pack clothing that will keep you comfortable in warmer, milder weather.

Rainfall : Rain isn’t much of a concern in January. This month typically sees about five or six days of rainfall, quite less when compared to the rest of the year outside the summer months. Furthermore, the hurricane season concludes before January, contributing to the generally drier Disney World weather .

Graph showing Disney World's average rainfall for each month according to the National Weather Service's Kissimmee monitoring station

In spite of the drier conditions in January, there is the possibility of short spurts of rain or a downpour from time to time. You should not plan your Disney World vacation around rain forecasts. Instead, include appropriate footwear and a poncho in case of rain on your Disney World packing list . Even in less rainy months, sudden showers can occur. Check out our Disney Attractions to Escape the Rain page for ideas on what you can do when it rains.

January’s weather at Disney World makes it a pleasant time to visit, as long as you’re prepared for a potential cold snap or unexpected rainfall . As the saying goes, it’s better to be safe than sorry!

Will Disney World be Crowded in January?

Historically, January was seen as a quieter month at Disney World, but recent trends show a change in this pattern. Now, January often attracts moderate to heavy crowds . While this shouldn’t dissuade visits, visitors should expect more crowds than in years past. A little more patience and strategic planning will ensure a smooth and enjoyable visit.

The residual excitement from the holiday season keeps the park bustling through the first weekend of January. Surprisingly, the Walt Disney World Marathon typically causes a dip in park attendance . This anomaly might be attributed to locals preferring to avoid the rerouted traffic connected to the marathon.

Visitor numbers begin to spike again near the end of January, coinciding with Martin Luther King Jr. Day . Avoiding this holiday and other similar peak periods will ensure a more relaxing and enjoyable visit.

To sum it up, by strategically bypassing the New Year’s Day and MLK Jr. Day crowds, you can expect a crowd size that is slightly above average but still manageable. Additionally, the crowd size during the marathon weekend may be smaller, despite other challenges presented during this period.

However, these trends aren’t set in stone. They can fluctuate from year to year and even day to day. Maintaining flexible expectations is equally important as knowing the expected crowd size. For more detailed information, consult our Disney World crowd calendar and check out our guide, “ How to avoid lines at Disney World ” for practical tips.

Prices at Disney World in January

January, with its blend of annual inflation, Disney’s pricing strategy, and the lack of extended school holidays, often presents a more economical option than December and February. It stands, alongside late summer and early fall, as one of the cheapest times to visit Disney World .

Ticket Prices

January 2025 Disney World ticket prices are generally the second-lowest prices of the year, behind weekdays in August/September.

The cheapest dates for theme park tickets during January 2025 are January 6-8 and 13, all of which started at $139. The most expensive date in this month is January 1 ($164). Another ten days of the month are priced at $159, and about 2/3rds of the month is priced at $149 or higher. Keep in mind that these are starting prices for an adult (ages 10+); prices will increase based on which park you visit (Magic Kingdom is usually the most expensive) and whether you add on options such as park hopping .

Hotel Prices

Disney World resort hotels significantly influence vacation costs, with options from budget-friendly Disney Value Resorts to mid-range Disney Moderate Resorts and luxurious Disney Deluxe Resorts , all offering unique experiences at varying prices.

Whether you’re dreaming of an ultimate luxury Disney World vacation at a 5-star hotel or a budget-friendly stay at the cheapest hotel at Disney World , your choice will greatly impact your overall expenses.

Here’s an example of the starting price for hotel rates in January 2025 at Disney’s All Star Sports resort, a value resort.

2025 Hotel Rate Graph - January

2025 Starting Hotel Prices for January

Many weekdays start at $117 and most weekends start around $170-$178. January 1, being a holiday, is a significant outlier from the remainder of the month at $230. Despite this, January remains the cheapest month to stay at a Disney World Hotel in 2025.

Graph showing starting prices for hotel rooms at Disney World in 2025

2025 Hotel starting prices

Of course, this is only starting pricing at a Disney Value Resort. Prices will increase dramatically for higher-tiered hotels and rooms, and the rates themselves can increase based on demand.

For a comprehensive understanding of cost variations throughout the year, consider our Disney World Cost Calculator page. It provides an invaluable forecast whether you’re planning a modest trip or a lavish vacation.

Overall, the average cost for a family of four for a week-long Disney World stay in 2024 was approximately $6,559. This includes a stay at a Disney Value Resort, six-day standard theme park tickets, Genie+ service, and quick-service meals. January offers some bargains off of this year-round average price, especially with lower hotel prices in the mix. While January 2025 hotel prices are generally comparable to 2024, increases elsewhere (tickets, dining plan, etc.) meant that an overall slight cost increase for a 2025 vacation is a reasonable assumption.

Nevertheless, January remains an attractive choice for budget-conscious visitors seeking an affordable yet memorable Disney World experience due to its blend of cost-effectiveness, mild weather, and manageable crowd sizes.

Ride Maintenance and Refurbishments (Closures) and New Ride Openings

In January, Disney World commences its winter refurbishment season. There are usually several minor closures and refurbishments during this period. Here are some notable closures and refurbishments, along with new rides which may be available during your trip.

Theme Parks and Attractions

  • Jungle Cruise (Magic Kingdom) : Typically closes for a few days in early January to remove the Jingle Cruise holiday overlay installed between late October and early November.
  • Kali River Rapids (Animal Kingdom) : Usually closes for an extended maintenance period starting in early- or mid-January and reopens in March or April.
  • Test Track (EPCOT): Closed starting June 17, 2024 for a major refresh. Opening date not yet announced, but a similar refresh in 2012 took almost 8 months; if this refurbishment follows the same pattern, it would reopen around January/February 2025.
  • Tiana’s Bayou Adventure (Magic Kingdom) : Should be open by Summer 2024, well in advance of January 2025 vacations.
  • The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure (Hollywood Studios): This new stage show, replacing Voyage of the Little Mermaid (which never reopened following the COVID-19 pandemic), is expected to debut in fall 2024 and should be available to view during your January 2025 vacation.

Resort Hotels and Amenities

  • Disney’s All Star Movies Resort – Fantasia Pool:  Closed from January 2025 through April 2025.
  • Disney’s Yacht & Beach Club Resorts – Stormalong Bay and Shipwreck Pool: Closed from January 2025 through June 2025.
  • Other Resort Hotel Pools: Extended refurbishments are possible during the colder months.

Transportation, Water Parks, Golf Courses, and More

  • Disney Skyliner (aerial gondola transportation system): Typically closes for a few days each January to allow for routine maintenance. Bus service is provided during the closure.
  • Disney Water Parks: Only one of the two parks (Blizzard Beach or Typhoon Lagoon) typically operates at a time, with the other being closed. See  Water Parks section below for further info.

All schedules are subject to change. To ensure you have the most accurate and current information on refurbished attractions and new constructions, it’s recommended to reach out to The Vacationeer before making any bookings. They’ll provide all the necessary details to help you plan your visit without disruptions.

Disney World Water Parks in January 2025: What to Expect

The Disney World water parks, Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach can be unpredictable in January due to seasonal operations and weather conditions. Here’s what to anticipate for 2025 based on recent trends:

  • November 13, 2022: Blizzard Beach opens and Typhoon Lagoon closes.
  • March 19, 2023: Typhoon Lagoon opens and Blizzard Beach closes.
  • November 6, 2023: Blizzard Beach opens and Typhoon Lagoon closes.
  • March 17, 2024: Typhoon Lagoon opens and Blizzard Beach closes.
  • Seasonal Themes : Following the success of the holiday makeover of Blizzard Beach in 2022, we anticipate this festive theme will continue for the coming years.
  • Projected Operating Months : It seems probable that each water park will alternate opening in multi-month intervals moving forward. Typhoon Lagoon would likely operate from spring through fall, while Blizzard Beach would run from fall through spring.
  • January 2025 Forecast : Considering these patterns, our expectation is that Blizzard Beach will be the only operational water park in January 2025.

However, this is just speculation based on previous patterns. Regardless of your specific travel dates in January 2025, you should expect at least one water park to be open. Keep in mind, though, that cold weather often causes closures during this month. It’s wise to not count heavily on a water park visit for your January trip. Consider exploring other attractions at Disney World as a backup plan in case of closures.

How to Prepare for Walt Disney World Marathon 2025

The Walt Disney World Marathon weekend (January 8 – 12, 2025) features an expo and a series of races, from a 5K on Thursday to a full marathon on Sunday. This period is unlike any other for participants and spectators alike, filled with unique experiences and camaraderie.

Crowd levels typically dip during this time. Despite the substantial number of participants, many are locals or runners too exhausted to fully utilize the parks, making it less crowded than expected. Moreover, local non-participants often steer clear due to the rerouted traffic, contributing to the reduced crowd levels.

Motor traffic adjustments are implemented for runner safety, potentially causing some delays for non-participants. For instance, on Saturday and Sunday mornings, travelers may face delays. Therefore, it’s crucial to plan your commute accordingly during these times.

The races on Thursday and Friday barely impact park visits, usually ending before parks open. The half marathon on Saturday could affect Epcot guests. However, on Sunday, the marathon might have a more significant impact on Hollywood Studios, Epcot, and Animal Kingdom.

Though the marathon can cause some inconvenience, the trade-off for lower crowds could be worthwhile. So, whether you’re a participant or visitor during this period, embracing the event’s spirit can lead to a memorable Disney experience.

Comparing Disney World in January (2025) to Neighboring Months

Wondering about the best month to visit Disney World? While January offers some unique advantages, it may not be the perfect month for every visitor. It’s essential to compare it with its neighboring months, December and February, to determine if January truly aligns with your preferences.

  • December or January? : While the weather patterns are similar, December and January offer significantly different experiences. By January, holiday celebrations usually wind down, and while some decorations may linger, they are not as important as they are in December. Historically, crowd sizes decrease in January compared to December, particularly outside of Christmas week. But this trend is changing. If you can visit in early December, the holiday season experience can be magical.
  • January or February? : In terms of Disney World experiences, January and February aren’t significantly different. However, late February sees increased crowds and prices, so it’s best to stay away from it. It all comes down to your personal schedule and how well you can avoid major events such as New Year’s, the Marathon, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and Presidents’ Day.

Visiting Disney World in January (2025) might be an appealing choice for some, especially if you can avoid the New Year and MLK Jr. Day crowds. Although it offers cooler temperatures, manageable crowds, and lower prices, January has a few downsides as well, such as water ride redevelopments, cold spells, and a busy schedule. Contact The Vacationeer to discuss your options.

Is January the Best Month to Visit Disney World?

Determining the best time to visit Disney World largely depends on personal preferences, as each month offers its own unique perks and challenges. Here are a few factors to consider for a January visit:

  • Crowds: Post-New Year’s week offers a more relaxed park experience with fewer crowds. However, certain dates, such as New Year’s Day and MLK Jr. Day, can still draw large crowds.
  • Cost : Disney vacations in January offer some of the lowest hotel and ticket prices of the year.
  • Weather : January typically provides cool weather, offering a break from Florida’s intense heat. However, cold spells can occur, requiring extra layers for comfort.
  • Attractions : On the downside, certain water rides and resort pools may undergo refurbishments in January. For that matter, the lower crowds make it an attractive month for Disney to schedule  any attraction refurbishment during the lull between the winter holidays and spring break.

Considering these aspects is crucial in making your decision. For example, do you favor the hotter yet less crowded conditions of August or September, even though these months fall during hurricane season?

On the other hand, perhaps the cooler but slightly busier month of January seems more attractive to you.

If you have constraints such as summer holidays, festive seasons, or school break weeks, then the decision-making dynamics change completely. Each of these periods brings unique experiences, from the holiday season’s festive ambiance to summer vacation’s lively atmosphere.

Answering these questions can help clarify whether January is truly the perfect month for your Disney World trip.

Personal Experiences: Disney World in January

Jaimie, my wife, and I visited Disney World in January 2021. Despite operating within COVID restrictions, we found that the magic was still very much alive. With fewer crowds than usual and the pleasant weather of the season, we had an intimate and unforgettable Disney experience. We savored each attraction, taking in the unique ambiance of Disney World in January.

The highlight of our trip? Witnessing the magic of Cinderella’s castle illuminated against the cool January night sky. This moment stood out in our memory, a testament to the Disney magic that thrives even in challenging times.

One of our friends, Taylor, had a similar amazing experience at Disney World in January 2023. She said, “Visiting Disney World in January was an amazing experience. The weather was perfect, and while there were still plenty of people around, it felt less crowded than our previous trips. We had the opportunity to experience Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge for the first time, and we had a blast! The Disney magic was even stronger on this trip.”

These shared experiences emphasize the charm of Disney World in January, a time when the magic seems even more profound against the cool winter backdrop. Both Jaimie and I, along with Taylor, highly recommend the month of January for your Disney World trip!

Final Thoughts

January at Disney World is an excellent time to experience the magic of the park in a cooler climate, with manageable crowds and an abundance of entertainment. This month is particularly appealing for those who prefer to avoid Florida’s intense heat in other months. Plus, it’s often the cheapest month of the year to visit Disney World, making it a prime choice for budget-conscious travelers.

Even though some attractions might be undergoing maintenance, there’s no shortage of fun-filled experiences waiting for you throughout the park.

Crafting a plan for your Disney World trip in January 2025 can lead to unforgettable memories. Sure, you’ll need to navigate around a few refurbishments and keep an eye on the event calendar. But the inviting atmosphere, cost-saving opportunities, and moderate crowd levels together create a truly compelling experience.

Consider timing your visit to coincide with the Walt Disney World Marathon weekend. This strategy could reward you with less crowded parks and the thrill of the marathon itself. Alternatively, align your visit with Epcot’s International Festival of the Arts in mid-January for a unique cultural immersion.

In a nutshell, January at Disney World offers a perfect blend of budget-friendly travel, a calm atmosphere, and dynamic events. With thoughtful planning, flexible itineraries, and the expertise of a Disney travel agent like The Vacationeer , your January 2025 Disney World trip could be a magical, affordable adventure brimming with lasting memories.

Disney Headlines for January 9th, 2024

by David Mumpower · January 9, 2024

Binny

We’re one week into 2024, and people are already day drinking. It’s that kind of week for Disney Headlines.

If You Like Pina Coladas…

Disneyland

I don’t make my way to Disneyland Resort often, which is regrettable since I have friends and family in the area.

However, I interact daily with Disneyland fans and have heard many stories about the Disney biker gangs out west.

That’s a real thing and a source of endless amusement to me.

disney tourist blog january 2024

Until last week, I had no idea that a similar group had formed at Walt Disney World, and they’re currently expressing their outrage.

What has these passionate Disney fans so upset? Disney has banished their patron saint to a new location.

Herein lies the tale of The Disney Day Drinkers and the Missing Mascot.

Binny

Photo: NY Post

A couple of years ago, two middle-aged adults were doing what middle-aged adults do at Disney.

They were hanging out at the World Showcase and getting their drink on.

Note that nobody says “getting their drink on” now and hasn’t in many years, but the people at the center of the story lived through that era.

New Year's Eve crowds in World Showcase

New Year’s Eve crowds in World Showcase

Anyway, while drinking, these Disney fans did what everyone does.

They started speaking nonsense that made perfect sense to them in their intoxicated states.

disney tourist blog january 2024

Specifically, they swore allegiance to a new concept and a new club.

At that moment, the Disney Day Drinkers were born. In your face, biker gangs of Disneyland!

Where Everybody Knows Your Name…

Of course, when you start a new club, you try to make it as official as possible.

Drunks aren’t big on bylaws, but they do like recognizable visuals that are currently right in front of their face.

So, a couple of individuals christened a mascot from their surrounding area. And they didn’t put a lot of thought into it, either.

Binny

Instead, these folks selected a random trash receptacle as their mascot. They named it Binny. I’m not even joking.

Apparently, Binny meant something to these winos, so much so that a retired military chaplain performed an actual ceremony to commemorate the occasion.

disney tourist blog january 2024

Well, he splashed ale on the trashcan, something he claims was intentional…but I have my doubts.

Anyway, in that moment, Binny became more than a trash can. Instead, that big pile of garbage represented a way of life.

Binny

Binny’s is the place where Day Drinkers sit at EPCOT and share their communal experience.

It’s a lot like Cheers, only without Norm or Cliff…but with much more trash.

Whither Binny?

I don’t pretend to understand social media, but the idea of day drinking at the World Showcase apparently resonates with a LOT of people.

More than 85,000 people have joined the Day Drinkers of EPCOT social media group.

I presume they don’t type well and have dropped their phones in their beers a time or two, but still. It’s a real group.

disney tourist blog january 2024

More importantly, this group is popular !

Disney officials are aware enough of its existence that you’ll find some special drink menus for members.

I presume there’s a code phrase or a secret handshake or something.

Italy pavilion

Anyway, if you say, “Take me to the summit…” to the right Disney bartender, they’ll hook you up.

That’s how powerful this group has become, which is remarkable since it’s just a couple of years old.

One of the tell-tale signs that you’re a member – other than knowing the secret phrase – is that you pose for a picture with Binny.

disney tourist blog january 2024

Alas, in perhaps the most villainous move since the days of Alexander Pope, EPCOT cast members did the unthinkable.

Under cover of darkness, they subverted the will of the people, the noble Day Drinkers of Disney, by moving Binny.

I’ll give you a moment to control your outrage. Are you good now?

Rose & crown

No, that’s okay. Take your time. It’s always hard the first time you learn you live in a society where someone can move a trash can.

What I’m saying is true, though. Last September, Disney randomly relocated Binny from its spot at Rose & Crown Dining Room.

Now, you’ll find Binny’s new home across the street by Sportsman’s Shoppe.

A Love Song from a Different Point of View

In lieu of trivializing your pain with another quip, I’ll say something else here instead.

My family loooooves Rose & Crown. It’s one of our go-to places at EPCOT.

This recent reveal about the Day Drinkers of Disney explains a LOT about why the area in front of the restaurant gets so congested.

EPCOT

In Disney’s defense, I can fully understand why the frequent stops for picture-taking had become a problem.

Sportsman’s Shoppe includes more space, so it is the better spot for this, at least logically.

To Binny’s loyal friends, it’s the darkest hour, though.

Rose & Crown EPCOT

Disney just took that poor, defenseless trashcan and moved it across the street. It had a family! An often drunk but surprisingly loyal family.

The story temporarily had a happy ending, as Disney moved Binny back in front of Rose & Crown last month.

Alas, that change proved temporary.

Binny

Photo: Wall Street Journal

The shock of Binny’s return caused even greater congestion than previously. So, Disney has moved it again.

The Wall Street Journal recently covered the story, and it has garnered other mainstream media traction because, well, people getting drunk at Disney is pretty funny.

Binny

So, the newfound media spotlight may force Disney to come up with a longer-term solution here. But I’m gonna let you in on a secret.

The Day Drinkers of Disney don’t need Binny to have a good time. The spirit comes from the ales, not the garbage can.

Herein ends the Ballad of Binny, the Patron Saint of Day Drinkers.

Disney trips are so complicated now that you need a class to plan one

Youtube videos, tiktoks, zoom classes and 200-page guides are here to help overwhelmed visitors.

disney tourist blog january 2024

Rob Kayris and his family of six were “dumping a boatload of money” into a Disney trip last year and wanted to make the most of it. So a few months before the vacation, they took a class about the new ride reservation system, Genie Plus .

Then right before the trip in February, they took it again.

“I feel like if you don’t know how it works, you’re going to waste probably two to three days before you have a grip on what’s what,” said Kayris, a copy machine salesman who lives outside Philadelphia.

Disney has always been a paradise for planners — or nightmare for the disorganized. When is the best time to go? How can we save money ? Is it possible to avoid long lines ?

David Semanoff, a public relations firm owner who has been visiting Disney parks since he was an infant, distributes a 10-page primer to friends with tips on rides, dining, character interaction and what to do if it rains (“get your ponchos and go to the park!”). Reactions to his advice can be mixed.

“I think some are already so overwhelmed at the idea of the trip,” he said.

Travel agents, YouTubers, influencers, bloggers, friends-with-experience, Disney experts and paid services like Touring Plans have filled the knowledge gap and helped frazzled families figure out their dream vacation even as the cost has soared. Some visitors turn to VIP tours that cost between $450 and $900 an hour, plus park admission. Others have used the service of independent guides, a practice Disney has been cracking down on .

The pandemic added a new layer of complications, though some of the biggest pain points — such as the need to make reservations and restrictions on when guests could hop from park to park — went away this month in Florida. Then came a fresh upheaval: Instead of the old, free-to-use ride-reservation system, the company introduced one that costs money, requires early wake-ups and drains cellphone battery life. The 2021 introduction of Genie Plus, which mobilizes vacationers to reserve rides starting at 7 a.m. and then throughout the day, turned vacation organization into a near-competitive sport. And it created a new lane for tipsters, content creators, travel advisers and savvy regulars.

One of those is Brooke Raybould, a social media content creator who sells a 200-page digital “ Mom’s Guide to Disney World” for $40. Her TikTok on her family’s early-morning approach to tackling the Magic Kingdom featuring a 7:20 a.m. arrival at the park with her four sons — went viral last year.

“There’s an entire system to doing Disney World the right way,” she said.

MAGIC KINGDOM GENERAL NOTES: We rope dropped Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. This is the only way to get on this ride without a line without paying. Next, we rode Peter Pan, It’s a Small World and Ariel. Fantasyland was finished and the park had barely opened. If Seven Dwarfs has a sign that says 75 minute wait when you rope drop. Ignore it! The line is actually short if you get there early, they just default to that sign. Our first Genie+ Big Thunder Mountain was then ready to ride at 10:15 AM. For those asking, we stay at the Four Seasons @fsorlando and love it! ♬ original sound - Brooke, The Southernish Mama

Learning the lingo

For the average Joe, the nomenclature of a Disney World trip can befuddle. Lightning lanes let you bypass longer standby lines to get faster entry to a ride. Genie Plus is the way you get access — unless you’ve paid for an individual lightning lane, which is only available for certain rides and doesn’t require Genie Plus. Those can be booked at 7 a.m. for resort guests and at park opening time for everyone else. Virtual queues for the newest, hottest rides are free, but also open for booking at 7 a.m. and often fill up quickly.

Got all that?

“I knew it would be complicated, but I don’t think I could have imagined the Disney-industrial complex was this complicated,” Theresa Brown, a New York City resident who took a family trip to Disney World in August, said in an email. “The sheer brain power just to figure out the Disney lingo and landscape is monumental.”

Kirsten Andrade, a concierge travel planner for Favorite Grampy Travels , saw that need when she created the Genie, Genie+, and Lightning Lane Tip & Tricks Facebook Group in 2021 — which has more than 200,000 members now. After several months, she decided to launch an interactive online class , which costs $39.

“It’s kind of a mixture of a Zoom and like a remote college class,” said Andrade, who is based in Pittsburgh. “We’ve got a little pop quiz built in.”

Planning forums are full of stressed-out newcomers trying to decipher a virtual queue from a lightning lane, and worrying about what happens if the technology glitches out — as technology often does.

“I’ve had people call me crying,” said Jacquie Murphy, a Wilmington, N.C.-based travel planner with Kingdom Elite Travel .

Jessica Mickelson, 39, worked for years as a family therapist and now applies those skills to her Disney planning business, Well Hello Magic . Her tagline is “minimizing parental stress at the Disney parks.”

“There is a therapeutic touch woven into everything,” she said.

The mom of four kids between the ages of 3 and 12 created a “Magic Made Easy” course for $139 as well as shorter free park guides , a YouTube channel , podcast, blog and social media accounts. Mickelson is not a travel agent — she doesn’t book trips for anyone — but includes tips on choosing an agent, sample itineraries, Disney apps and what happens when everything goes wrong.

“Then I talk about realistic expectations, which is the therapist in me,” she said.

She likes her family trips to be low-key and flexible with a mix of parks, hotels and other activities. Still, her husband, Jerod, can’t help but engage in a modern-day Disney activity: testing the WiFi speed before 7 a.m. to make sure they have a strong connection to book reservations right on time.

A costly, time-consuming perk

Murphy sees the value in Genie Plus, but she wishes visitors had more transparency about the price. At Disneyland, the price varies but starts at $30. At Walt Disney World, prices change according to the day and park; on Tuesday, for example, the service cost $17 at Animal Kingdom up to $27 at Magic Kingdom or for multiple parks. The price reached $39 at Magic Kingdom around Christmas, according to Disney Tourist Blog.

“I think the thing that people have the hardest time wrapping their brain around is not knowing how much it costs in advance,” Murphy said.

David Gordon, a theater journalist in New York City whose wife works for a Disney subsidiary and gets free tickets, has purchased a $25 quick entry — an individual Lightning Lane — to ride a Star Wars ride on a trip to Disneyland. And his family used Genie Plus over the Christmas holiday at Walt Disney World to avoid lines for rides with his young daughter, which he called an “absolute game changer.”

He said he understands Disney is trying to get people to use its apps. But many parks fans don’t want to view their trip through a small screen.

“It’s the one time in my life where I want to be looking around and taking in all the sights and smelling the flowers,” he said. “The fact that you have to be so tethered to your app that you should probably bring an extra battery just to make sure you get on the one ride you want to get on is shortchanging the whole Disney experience.”

Disney has said it is taking customer feedback into consideration and has made some Genie Plus changes. The company created its own team of advice-givers in 2008, now an online forum called planDisney .

“We know everyone vacations differently, and with hundreds of iconic Disney attractions and experiences to enjoy at Walt Disney World, we are listening to our guests and giving them many choices and ways to personalize their visit to meet their unique needs,” Disney World spokeswoman Jacquee Wahler said in a statement.

In a blog post last year, the company acknowledged that guests want to use the Genie Plus service to plan their days in advance of a park visit, not just in real time — and said that may be possible in 2024.

“Our goal is to give you the opportunity to spend less time planning in the park and more time enjoying your visit with friends and family,” the blog post said.

Tips from the experts

Mickelson likes to visit the parks in late August and September, when kids are back in school and crowds are more manageable. “You kind of exchange the heat for the crowd level,” she said. She plans for midday breaks and rest days that let her family take advantage of non-park offerings at the resorts.

Her biggest tips are to understand the geography of the parks and learn to ignore Disney FOMO (fear of missing out). When booking Genie Plus, she said it’s important to know which rides sell out quickly, start with the high-demand one your family wants and then tackle other attractions in the same area.

“With Genie Plus, we have never zigzagged across the park,” she said.

Murphy recommends that guests bring an extra power bank or cellphone charger when they go to the parks because they’ll spend so much time on their phones. She also suggests people “play around” with the My Disney Experience app in advance of a trip to Walt Disney World to get familiar with all the features.

On the day of a Disney World visit, Murphy suggests a triage approach starting at 7 a.m. sharp: First, join a virtual queue to get on the hottest new rides without paying extra. Next, use the Genie Plus service (which can be purchased as early as midnight) to choose the first attraction you’ll hit — ideally one that books up quickly. Finally, for those staying on Disney property, snag up to two individual lightning lanes. Everyone else has to wait for the park to open to reserve those slots.

Semanoff’s number one tip is to book a room at a Disney resort. He said it’s worth the splurge if for no other reason than being able to pay for a spot on the most popular rides at 7 a.m. Plus, he said staying on property keeps “the whole vibe alive” and lets guests avoid morning traffic jams.

His recommendations wrap up with perhaps the most challenging tip to follow: “Remember to have fun! It can be stressful and annoying, so remember to breathe and enjoy.”

This story has been updated.

More about Disney

Outsiders banned: Disney theme park trips cost a lot — more every year — and take heaps of planning to pull off. But the company has recently banned some independent tour guides from helping visitors navigate the parks, citing “unauthorized commercial activities.”

Next-level fandom: For some Disney fans, donning a pair of Mickey ears isn’t enough. In a practice called “ Disneybounding ,” they create entire character-inspired outfits that don’t run afoul of rules that ban costumes for adults. Disney food fans had a reason to celebrate when a beloved snack, Dole Whip , came to grocery stores. How does it stack up to the parks version?

Political crossfire: The most magical place on earth has gotten political , thanks to a battle with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R). While several observers have suggested Disney World move out of the Sunshine State, experts say it’s a goofy proposition. Fan sites have been forced to add coverage of lawsuits to their standard lineup about rides, churros and characters.

The Best Airlines for Disney World Fans in 2025

By David Goodkind Leave a Comment

We may only be a quarter of the way through 2024, but it’s never too early to look ahead to your 2025 Disney World Vacation!

disney tourist blog january 2024

Let’s fly!

When it comes to planning your next Disney World vacation , look no further — we’re here to help!  From vacation packages to Disney Park tips, planning a Disney World trip takes a lot of preparation. One of the most overlooked parts of planning can be air travel . If you’re looking for flying advice, you’ve come to the right place!

When it comes to flying to  Orlando International Airport (MCO),  it’s important to consider which airlines actually make frequent flights to and from the airport. After some research,  we’ve discovered the most popular airlines that travel through MCO, which could help you decide the airline you want to use during your next Disney World vacation!

Southwest Airlines

Southwest Airlines,  by far, is the most frequently flown airline at MCO. With the most destinations (and growing) , Southwest is easily the most obvious airline to choose when flying to Orlando.  In fact, this summer, Southwest will make MCO their hub for international flights coming in and out of Florida.

disney tourist blog january 2024

Southwest Airlines at the Orlando Airport

We use Southwest a lot for our Disney World vacations. It generally has lower airfare than competitors, doesn’t charge cancel or change fees , and allows passengers to check two bags for free. People have mixed feelings about the open seating policy, but obviously that hasn’t deterred the airline from doing serious business in Orlando.

Southwest frequently has deals, so keep your eyes peeled!

JetBlue Airways

JetBlue Airways  is so ingrained with Orlando travel that it has a hotel partnership with Universal Orlando Resort. Orlando is JetBlue’s focus city  and makes plenty of daily trips to and from the city.

disney tourist blog january 2024

It’s worth watching if this airline ends up merging with Spirit Airlines after its initial deal was blocked in court. Spirit is one of the main airlines to frequent MCO and would have made this list had it not been suffering from financial issues, leading it to an unknown fate.

Delta Airlines

In 2022 and 2023, Delta Airlines  was the third most popular domestic airline at MCO and it is expected to have continued success in 2024 and beyond.

In fact, this past February it upgraded its flying experience , including first-class seats that offer more privacy, comfort, storage space, and a sturdier tray table. They are also installing some new 10-inch Panasonic screens to seat backs and touchless features to lavatories on Boeing 737-800 aircraft. Finally, more lie-flat suites are being added to the Airbus A350-900 aircraft, which will debut this summer.

Frontier Airlines

Frontier Airlines  is just slightly behind Delta in popularity at MCO thanks to its VERY cheap airfare.

Frontier Plane at the Orlando Airport

This budget airline similarly went through recent upgrades and regularly offers MASSIVE discounts. Unfortunately, it just ended flights between MCO and Harrisburg International Airport in Pennsylvania , but it’s still an airline to circle if you’re looking to spend most of your money at Disney World and not on air travel!

American Airlines

American Airlines is Ol’ Reliable if you are looking for flights to MCO out of a domestic major city.

This airline, which is about to change its frequent flyer program , has destinations to Austin, Charlotte, Chicago–O’Hare, Dallas/Fort Worth, Los Angeles, Miami, Philadelphia, Phoenix–Sky Harbor, and Washington–National airports.  If you live near any of these major cities, American Airlines should be on your radar.

Disneyland 2024: What You Need to Know

I f you’re planning a Disneyland visit in 2024 you might be wondering what is different. We’ve got you covered. Here’s what you need to know about visiting each of the Anaheim California theme parks in 2024. We’ve got tips for Disneyland and California Adventure – plus what is open and what might be new during your visit!

What are the Rules for Disneyland in 2024?

Travel changed dramatically in 2020 and Disneyland changed too. Here are some of the ways visiting Disneyland in 2024 is different:

  • Park reservation system. Anyone holding a valid park ticket must also make a Disneyland park reservation.
  • Advance ticket purchase. Disneyland new ticket sales are open and there was a price increase. Tickets are not sold at the theme park gates and must be bought ahead of your trip.
  • Park Hopping. Available daily after 11 am for those holding Park Hopper passes.
  • Face coverings are optional. Some guests continue to wear them in crowded or indoor locations, as a personal preference.

Disneyland Tickets 2024: Changes and Things to Know

Disneyland’s Annual Passholder program was discontinued several years ago. Its replacement, Disneyland Magic Key, provides reservation-based admission to one or both Disneyland parks.

Prices increased on all ticket tiers except for Tier 1. A new tier, Tier 6, was added to cover the busiest days of the year.

Where to Buy Disneyland Tickets

She Buys Travel recommends Get Away Today for discounted Disneyland tickets and vacation packages. Book your hotel reservations with Get Away Today now to lock in travel dates. With Disneyland ticket sales now open, Get Away Today can add these to your hotel package.

Get Away Today also offers price monitoring and a complimentary concierge service that’s invaluable to travelers.

After you buy your tickets, someone from Get Away Today will reach out to answer any of your Disneyland vacation questions or help you create and book your itinerary.

Park Reservations are Required at Disneyland

Just like in Walt Disney World, park reservations are required. One nice thing about Disneyland is that you can purchase your tickets and make your reservations at the same time! If you already have tickets be sure to reserve your dates ASAP. You can check the calendar for availability .

Both an advance park reservation and valid ticketed admission for the same park on the same date are required for anyone age 3 and up. Park Hopping between Disneyland and Disney California Adventure park is allowed beginning at 11 am each day.

More Changes for Disneyland in 2024

Similar to the Disney World changes, these are the modifications that guests have seen at Disneyland since the reopening:

  • Limited capacity of guests allowed inside parks by utilizing park reservations.
  • Early Entry is available for guests staying at a Disneyland Resort hotel.
  • FASTPASS and Disney MaxPass have been replaced with Disney Genie Service.
  • Touchless transactions is recommended. Disneyland is encouraging guests to use debit, credit and gift cards rather than cash for purchases and to use mobile ordering for quick service meals. You’ll be able to use gift cards to pay via the Disneyland app under a change to the system.

Which Disneyland and Disney California Rides Are Open?

Most rides and attractions are currently open and operating, with a few closures for refurbishment or “reimagining”. These closures can certainly alter plans for your vacation so be sure to check the Disneyland website calendar before your visit to verify which attractions are available or down for refurbishment.

Where Can I See Disney Characters at Disneyland?

Traditional character meet ‘n greets are back in the theme parks, including hugs, photos ops, and autographs! Popular Disney characters are making appearances in and around the parks.

At the Disneyland park, guests can expect to spot Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Goofy, Donald Duck and Pluto near Main Street USA. Disney princesses chat with guests in Fantasy Faire and a variety of other characters walk around in Fantasyland.

Over at Disney California Adventure park, Anna and Elsa from Frozen meet inside the Disney Animation Building. Characters from Pixar films including Toy Story, Inside Out, and the Incredibles meet in the Pixar Pier area.

Character Dining is also back! Guests that book these dining experiences have one-on-one interactions with characters that visit each table within the restaurant. Be sure to make advance dining reservations for these character dining experiences.

Disneyland Resort Changes in 2024: What Has Returned?

Disneyland 2024 has essentially returned to full operation. Many attractions at the Disney theme parks in California that were previously closed have reopened.

  • Parades, performances, live indoor shows, fireworks and nighttime spectaculars have fully returned to the theme parks. View the Disneyland entertainment calendar online or in the app for exact dates and times during your visit.
  • Children’s play areas have reopened, including those in the Redwood Creek Challenge Trail, Goofy’s How-to-Play Yard, and Mickey’s House.
  • Restaurants are open and operating at full capacity for both indoor and outdoor seating.
  • Disneyland souvenir shopping remains a popular part of the travel experience. Souvenir shops are fully available, including the iconic Silhouette Studio.
  • Lockers are available in all locations at Disneyland, making storing your personal belongings and purchases a little bit easier.

What’s NEW at Disneyland 2024?

There is a lot that is new now that Disneyland has reopened. While most of these adjustments are procedural, some are exciting changes everyone should be looking forward to.

Mickey’s Toontown Opening

The whimsical Toontown area at Disneyland has received a colorful make-over that includes new rides, dining, and playgrounds. Disneyland Toontown rides and attractions include Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, Chip ‘n’ Dale’s GADGETcoaster, and Goofy’s How-to-Play Yard.

Mickey’s Toontown is a must-do! Aim to purchase Disney Genie+ in order to use the Lightning Lanes. This will allow a shorter wait time for several of the popular attractions in this new (and often crowded) new area.

Improved Mobile Ordering at Disneyland

I’m a huge fan of mobile ordering. They’ve expanded the quick-service locations using the app. Mobile ordering allows you to order via the Disneyland app, choosing a pick-up time for meals. Then, simply pick up food at a special window, bypassing the stand-by ordering queue.

Within the program, guests will be able to use a Disney gift card as payment. For Magic Key pass holders that had their pass scanned into the Disneyland app, the applicable membership discount will still apply to dining purchases. The discount will apply automatically to your total in app.

Avengers Campus

Avengers Campus is the newest Disney California Adventure land that opened to guests on June 4th, 2021. This highly anticipated Marvel-themed area includes WEB SLINGERS: A Spider-Man Adventure ride, interactive character meet ‘n greet locations and quick service dining.

Read More: Avengers Disneyland Campus: What You Need to Know

San Fransokyo Square

The Pacific Wharf area in Disney California Adventure has been rethemed into San Fransokyo Square, based upon the Big Hero 6 movie. Guests can enjoy new dining, a Baymax and Hiro greeting, and souvenir shopping.

Disneyland Resort Hotels

All Disneyland Resort hotels are open and fully functioning. Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel has been rebranded to Disney’s Pixar Place and is now open after a full remodeling.

  • Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa – hotel.
  • Disney Vacation Club Villas.
  • Disney’s Pixar Place Hotel .
  • Disneyland Hotel .
