Those applying for a VISA must have some Documents?

Persons applying for a VISA need to submit certain documents based on the Country they live in. The documents are listed below

A colour copy of the passport page that has the Photo and other individual details. This known as the Passport Bio Data Page
The last page of the passport – The last page of the passport of the people of certain countries have vital information. India is one such country. People of countries without any information on this page may attach the first page.
A colour copy of their passport-sized photo. It’s better to not crop the photo that is in the passport
Confirmed return air ticket (Not applicable for all)
An applicant whose Present Nationality and present Country of Permanent Residency is not the same must submit an address proof. (Applicable for GCC residents)

What if your children are travelling with you?

Those who are taking their child must file a separate VISA application must for him/her. The documents to be attached are his/her passport, photograph, and birth certificate in Arabic or English. For children without a passport, a copy of their parent’s passport where their credentials are endorsed must be attached.

Is there any prerequisite for the passport?

The passport must be valid for at least 3 months starting from the day a traveller arrives in Dubai. All persons whose passport’s validity is less must renew for making an application for Dubai visa.

You can make an application for a Dubai visa between 5 and 58 working days ahead of the date of your travel.

What is the age criteria for applying?

Males who are less than 18 years and females who are aged less than 22 years cannot travel alone. They must apply along with their mother, father, or husband for avoiding rejection.

Dubai: If you are thinking of inviting your friends and family from abroad to Dubai, you can apply for a three-month single- or multiple-entry visa.

If you are a Dubai resident, you must apply for the visa through the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs of Dubai (GDRFA -Dubai).

According to GDRFA, the visit visa for family and friends can be issued for a period 30, 60 or 90 days .

However, if you reside in the following emirates – Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah or Fujairah, the authority in charge of issuing the visit visa is Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP), click here for a detailed guide.

Salary criteria for sponsoring the three-month visit visa

According to Ummer, UAE resident sponsoring the visa must fulfill the salary requirement.

“The salary criteria is Dh4,000 or a salary of Dh3,000 plus accommodation ,” he said.

Required documents:

“This visa can only be sponsored by a UAE resident, and if they want bring their family here as visitors, they must provide proof of their relationship,” Shavad Tharavattath, manager at Multy Hands Businessmen Services, said.

He provided the following list of documents that applicants should provide:

Documents related to the sponsor: • Tenancy contract • Salary certificate • Consanguinity proof document – a document proving your relationship with the relative, for example birth certificate or marriage certificate. • Emirates ID copy • Valid passport copy

For the visitor: • Passport copy with six months validity • Passport photo

How to apply for the Dubai three-month visa online

Through the official GDRFA website, you can either apply for single- or multiple-entry visit visa for family and friends:

1. Visit the official GDRFA website - gdrfad.gov.ae and click on the login icon on the menu bar. 2. Sign in with your UAE Pass or existing GDRFA account. 3. Next, you will be transferred to GDRFA’s smart services platform - smart.gdrfad.gov.ae 4. Clink on the ‘New Application’ button. 5. Next, search for the service, ‘Entry Permit for a Long Period (single entry)’ or ‘Multi-Entry Visa for a relative or friend’ 6. Fill in the application with required details of the person you are sponsoring and upload the documents. 7. Next, pay the fee for the visa. 8. You will receive a confirmation on your registered mobile number and email address that the application has been received. You will also receive a reference number to follow-up on the application.

You can also apply for the visa through an Amer Centre, which processes immigration applications on behalf of GDRFA-Dubai. The GDRFA website states that the total cost of the visa may vary slightly, depending on the circumstances surrounding the sponsored person or for other reasons related to the application. However, here is a breakdown of the costs you can budget for, when applying for a single-entry or multiple-entry visa:

Single-entry three-month

• Visa fee: Dh400 • Security amount: Dh1,000 • Warranty service fee: Dh20 • Fee for collection and return of the guarantee: Dh40

According to Ummer, the financial guarantee is refundable if the visa is not approved .

• Health insurance: Dh90 • Knowledge dirham: Dh10 • Innovation dirham: Dh10 • Fee inside the country: Dh500, if the dependent is inside the UAE.

The fees listed above are not inclusive of Value Added Tax (VAT).

Multiple-entry three-month visa:

• Visa fee: Dh700 • Guarantee amount: Dh2000 • Warranty service fee: Dh20 • Fee for collection and return of the guarantee: Dh40 • Health insurance: Dh90 • Knowledge dirham: Dh10 • Innovation dirham: Dh10 • Fee inside the country: Dh500, if the dependent is inside the country.

Larry Madowo Questions Nigeria's Visa Charges

Renowned CNN journalist and media personality Larry Madowo has raised concerns regarding the visa charges imposed by Nigeria.

Taking to his X handle, Madowo expressed his frustrations over being charged $215 (Ksh27,950) for a 1-month, single-entry visa, during his third visit to the country in 2024.

“Nigeria just charged me $215 for a 1-month single-entry visa. Again. I was here 3 weeks ago – paid the same $215. This is actually my 3rd time in Nigeria this year, so they have made $645 from me in 2024 alone,” Madowo wrote on his platform.

Madowo questioned the rationale behind charging for biometric data collection, pointing out that his fingerprints remain unchanged since his previous visit a mere three weeks ago.

Madowo Reveals Extra Visa Charges

Further, Madowo pointed out that while the visa itself costs $25 (Ksh3,250), additional fees include a $20 (Ksh2,600) “processing fee” and another $170 (Ksh22,100) for biometrics, which he deemed unnecessary since his fingerprints had not changed since his previous visit.

“The visa itself costs $25 but Nigeria charges a $20 ‘processing fee’ and $170 for biometrics every time. My fingerprints haven’t changed since I was here 3 weeks ago, why am I paying $170 to have them taken and to pose for a picture each time I visit? Isn’t that a standard part of admitting someone into a country?” questioned Madowo.

Madowo also raised concerns about the implications of such high visa charges on the vision of a borderless Africa and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

“How can we achieve a borderless Africa, or the promise of the AfCFTA, if we charge Africans $215 for a single-entry visa?” Madowo posted.

His post draws attention to the broader implications of visa policies on regional integration and economic development even as African countries mull over the issue of travelling without visas.

Disparities Over Africa Visa Policies

Reflecting on his experiences in other African countries, Madowo explained the stark contrast in visa policies.

Notably, he mentioned that with his Kenyan passport, he traveled to Uganda, South Africa, and Ghana without incurring any visa fees, illustrating the disparity in visa regulations across the continent.

“In the 3 weeks since I was last in Lagos, I went to Uganda, South Africa, and Ghana where I don’t need a visa with a Kenyan passport. In fact, I’ve also been to South Africa 3 times this year. It cost me $0, like the ancestors intended,” said Madowo.

Madowo further critiqued Nigeria’s visa-on-arrival system, likening it to Kenya’s Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) process, which he described as a “delusion.”

Consequently, Madowo stated the bureaucratic hurdles and the potential avenues for corruption, where individuals may pay extra to expedite the approval process.

“Nigeria’s visa-on-arrival system is similar to the ‘visa-free’ delusion of Kenya’s Electronic Travel Authorization – you apply in advance, submit some documents and wait for it to be approved. It can take up to 5 business days. If you know ‘someone,’ you can pay them $50 or more to ‘facilitate’ a faster approval,” lamented Madowo.
