Getting around by Edmonton public transit

For newcomers to Edmonton, transportation is one of the primary needs to address in the first few weeks of living in the city. Neighbourhoods in Edmonton are large and spaced out, so public transportation can help you cover the potentially long distances you may need to travel to get to work, school, or any other destination. Through this article, we hope to provide you with all the information you’ll need to access the public transit in Edmonton.

Edmonton Transit Service (ETS) is the main transit authority of Edmonton. The city has both buses and a Light Rail Train (LRT) service to take you anywhere you need to go.

Tip: To know more about the city of Edmonton, start with the provincial spotlight article for Alberta .

Benefits of using Edmonton public transit

You may be wondering why you should take public transit instead of buying a car to drive. Consider these benefits of using public transit regularly when you decide how you will travel in Edmonton:

  • Save money: Purchasing a car is a large financial commitment that adds up over time. Newcomers may be surprised at the additional costs of insurance, maintenance, tires, gas, parking, and other hidden costs associated with buying or leasing a car. You can learn more by reading how to buy or lease a car in Canada . Your wallet will thank you for choosing public transit instead.
  • Help the environment: A clear benefit to using public transportation is the reduction of your personal carbon footprint. Choosing not to own a car is one of the most effective ways for individuals to cut down on their emissions in their everyday life.
  • Health benefits: Adding more activity to your daily routine is one of the best ways to consistently support your health. Using public transit requires more walking and active participation than driving directly to your destination. Add even more daily activity by combining your commute with cycling.
  • Avoid traffic: Your commute home on transit may actually take less time than driving as you will not get stuck in traffic. Edmonton’s busiest roads, such as 111 Street, get packed at rush hour times. Instead of getting frustrated in the 5:30 p.m. white-knuckle traffic, you can instead relax and listen to music or read a book on your transit ride home.
  • No need to park: Finding a space to park at your destination isn’t always easy, and parking costs are high in populated downtown areas. You can have a lot more flexibility in your travels if you remove the need to park anywhere by simply catching the LRT train instead.
  • Constant improvement: Public transit is a large part of Edmonton’s future, so it will continuously be improved to become more efficient and cheaper to travel. The more riders transit has, the more valuable it is to the city, and the more time and money will be spent improving it.

How to pay for public transit in Edmonton

How much does edmonton transit cost.

For adults, one-way fare for transit is $3.50 CAD . You can also get an unlimited monthly transit pass for $97.00 per month . These fares are valid on any ETS transit service. For buses, you can use exact change, a transit ticket, or a bus pass. If you use a pass on the bus, you must clearly display your pass to the driver. On the LTR, you can use a ticket or pass. You do not need to scan these, but you are required to display them if ever requested for proof of payment by a transit officer.

Tip: Once you pay your fare for a one-way trip, you have 90 minutes to complete any transfers to other forms of transportation to complete your trip. If you pay with cash or ticket fare, you will need to acquire a paper transfer from the bus driver. You can transfer between the bus and the LRT with this transfer.

Where can I buy an Edmonton transit pass?

Fare vending machines are available in LRT stations. You can also purchase ETS pass products throughout the city of Edmonton at any certified retailer . Most convenience stores (like 7-Eleven) or grocery stores carry ETS products.

What are the public transit options in Edmonton?

  • Light Rail Transit (LRT): Edmonton has two LRT lines. The Capital Line, which travels from Clareview in the north to Century Park Station in the southwest, and the Metro Line with travels from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) in the north to both Health Sciences/Jubilee or Century Park Station. See the locations of all LRT stations .
  • Buses: Buses are a common form of transit in Edmonton. Blue and white bus stop signs indicate the bus route number. Find out more about how to ride the bus in Edmonton.
  • Streetcar: The High Level Bridge Streetcar is more of a novelty attraction than a transit vehicle. Fares must be paid separately from regular ETS passes or tickets. The streetcar does show up on some trip planning apps, and you can use it to travel over the High Level Bridge.

Starting your trip: Maps and planning tools

Locating your route with transit maps.

See the full ETS maps to orient yourself within the city and see how far you need to go:

  • ETS City Centre Map

Options for trip planning tools

The ETS has a trip planning tool in which you can input your origin and destination to find your best transit route. It will calculate a few different route options for you, and then you can decide your optimal route.

Tip: Rocketman is a Canadian-built transit app that you can use to find out when the next bus or train is arriving, track your bus along its route, save your favourite stops, and get transit delay alerts in real-time. You can download the Rocketman app today for free. Rocketman is easy to use, showing you only the info you need to get you to your destination on time and with minimal waiting. Riders using the app can even see how full each transit vehicle is before boarding with the Crowdedness feature . This feature works by asking commuters to help other riders by reporting how crowded their transit vehicle is, and the app can display these crowdedness levels so all Rocketman users can be better prepared for their commute.

Cycling and transit in Edmonton

Combining cycling and public transportation is a great way to go farther distances with minimal coast and environmental impact. You can also get a great workout cycling to work or school. Bicycles can be attached to any bus you ride on the front bike rack. Instructions for the front bike rack are found right on the rack. You may also bring your bike on the LTR at any non-rush hour (Weekdays 7:30-9:30 a.m. and 4-5:30 p.m.) time. Bike parking is available at most LTR stations.

Tip: Familiarize yourself with Edmonton Bicycle Safety before venturing out on your bike in the city.

Now that you know the benefits of using public transportation in Edmonton, you can start planning your next transit trip using maps and trip planning tools. Using the bus or LRT to explore Edmonton, or to commute to work or school, will help you become familiar with the city quickly. Plus, you will feel good knowing you are saving money and helping out the environment while you ride to your next destination.

'The most Edmonton experience I've ever had': Hundreds of transit lovers show up to ride first Southeast Valley Line LRT

Hundreds of transit-loving Edmontonians showed up to ride the first train of the Valley Line Southeast LRT long before the crack of dawn Saturday.

There was cake and coffee and enough ribbon for everyone to cut some, as giddy residents celebrated the opening of a transit line that was originally supposed to open in December of 2020.

The first train rolled out of the Mill Woods LRT and 102 Street stations at 5:15 a.m.

“This has been a long journey, with challenges and detours, but we’re confident in the system we’ve built. Our focus has always been, and will continue to be, delivering a safe, reliable system to Edmontonians,” TransEd Partners CEO, Ronald Joncas, said in a news release from the city on Tuesday.

The city said Tuesday, "Valley Line Southeast has been independently certified by professional engineers, a safety auditor and an independent, professionally qualified, certifier. TransEd recently received a formal certificate from the independent certifier, indicating the infrastructure is complete and meets the requirements of the project agreement."

"We all cheered at every stop," said transit passenger Justin Draper. "And when the train started, we had a countdown to have the first train leave the station and it was like a magical moment."

📢Valley Line Southeast is open!📢 #yeg 's very first low-floor LRT system is here and it's a game-changer. 'EATING CAKE AND DOING TRAIN'

Much of the revelry was orchestrated by Troy Pavlek, who described himself as "a concerned Edmontonian who loves trains."

Pavlek brought the cake, the coffee, the roll of ribbon, a pair of oversized scissors and astonishing enthusiasm for someone at 4:30 in the morning.

edmonton lrt plan your trip

"We're eating cake and doing train," said Pavlek. "That's the entire point of this event. Edmontontians -- for the past three years since the delays, five years since it started, and 10 years since it was announced, 50 years since we started LRT -- people have wanted this to happen – so I'm just channelling the bursting pipe of excitement to overflow on this platform. And – it's happening!"

His passion for the project was mirrored by Draper, who grew up next to Clareview LRT and rode it to school, to work, and to hang out with pals.

"Public transit is one of those things that can really build a city and support its growth," Draper said. "Obviously I'm concerned about climate change and having environment-friendly transportation options and this is one of those things that supports that.

Will my future kids ever get tired of hearing about me being on the first ever trip of the Valley Line LRT? Only time will tell. pic.twitter.com/hPYBhAjLCo — Justin Draper (@JustinDraperYEG) November 4, 2023

"It (also) helps people living in poverty," he added. "It helps people who just want to be connected to other parts of their city – I'm going to take this to come see festivals downtown, (and) I'm going to take it to access local businesses downtown, so I'm going to be supporting the local economy where I probably wouldn't be otherwise if I had to drive and find parking.

JHe continued, "It's just one of those things (where) every part of living in a city is made better when you have good public transit."

Valley Line Southeast LRT is now open! Plan your trip using our trip planner at https://t.co/tM3eCpjw2b or tools like Google Maps. Regular ETS fares are valid fares for this service. Please be patient as everyone adapts to the new line. #YegTransit pic.twitter.com/QXALh5NcIH — Edmonton Transit Service (ETS) (@takeETSalert) November 4, 2023

'TRANSFORMATIONAL'

Edmonton city manager Andre Corbould echoed Draper's sentiments about the impact the Valley Line Southeast will have on the city.

"It's huge," he said. "It's a transformational project. When we talk about transformational projects, this is one of them. This is going to change everything.

"And I'm already starting to talk to folks now who are more excited about building housing out in Mill Woods and all the places along the transit line," he added. "So this isn't just about transit.

"This is about livability in the city," he said, "this is about housing, and just having that urban vibe in the city so it's going to be a huge step."

What made Saturday's launch even more fun was that it lacked politicians making speeches and doing photo ops. Instead, the ceremonial aspects were officiated by transit riders – and for cake-bearer Pavlek, that was perfect.

edmonton lrt plan your trip

"Part of this too, represents Edmonton being a big-boy city," he said. "We've grown into a city of one million people – we're going to be two million people in 2050.

"This is the official launch (of the Valley Line Southeast)," he added. "If politicians want to cut a ribbon in five months, they can do that. We have cake – and ribbon!

"And literally, anyone else who wants to cut a ribbon – we've got a whole roll of ribbon!"

Helpful Tips for Planning Your Solar Eclipse Trip

People Observe Annular Solar Eclipse From Mexico

T here are few natural phenomena that can evoke the same emotion of a solar eclipse . Around the world, myths and legends have developed to explain the rare event, which happens when the shadow of the moon blocks the light from the sun, causing a period of temporary darkness in the middle of the day. In ancient China, eclipses were said to signal that the sun was being devoured by a dragon, while in South America, subjects of the Inca Empire believed it signaled the sun god’s anger at the world.

On April 8, 2024, those in Canada, the U.S., and Mexico will have the opportunity to view a total solar eclipse for themselves. TIME spoke to veteran solar eclipse travelers for tips, so that anyone planning a solar eclipse trip can get the most out of the experience.

What to consider before you embark on a solar eclipse trip

Travel to the path of totality.

Most places on the eclipse path will only be able to experience a partial solar eclipse, where the sun is not completely covered by the moon. Many people assume that might be enough, but to really experience what a solar eclipse feels like, you should travel to the path of totality, where the sun is 100% covered. “A partial eclipse is not an eclipse. It really does not come close. You need to be in the path of totality to really experience it,” Paul Bryans, a project scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, tells TIME.

To check if a location is in the line of totality, you can use this map . Places within the line of totality are shaded in the darkest shade of red.

Weather conditions

Another thing to think about when considering where to travel for a solar eclipse is the weather conditions in different places along the line of totality. You might not get the full experience if it is cloudy outside. When there are clouds blocking the sun and the moon, the eclipse effects are much less dramatic.

One way to avoid this problem is to choose a place along the line of totality with a high chance of sunny weather. For the eclipse in 2024, many of the places with the highest expected chances of sunny weather are in Mexico. If you would rather stay in the U.S. for the duration of the eclipse, many places in Texas are also expected to have good weather conditions. As a general rule for the 2024 eclipse, the further south along the eclipse line you go, the better your chances of good weather. “When you get to the northern parts, you have a much higher possibility of being disappointed,” Brian McGee, founder of Astro Trails , a company that leads solar eclipse tours, tells TIME.

Book accommodations and tickets in advance

Every expert TIME spoke with warned about how quickly accommodations and travel tickets sell out in places where the eclipse will happen. You can expect Airbnbs and hotel prices to go up dramatically for dates close to or during the eclipse. Transportation may also take way longer than usual. Traffic jams caused by tourists flocking into cities to catch the solar eclipse might make your travel time significantly longer so you should plan accordingly. During the 2017 solar eclipse, major traffic jams were recorded in Wyoming and Kentucky . The streets did not return to normal until approximately nine hours after the eclipse ended.

Whatever you do, make sure to arrive at your destination several hours before the eclipse starts. “It's going to be crazy on the day of the eclipse. So my advice to people is if they're going to travel, either by car or by airplane, do it early. Don't leave it until Monday, April 8,” John Gianforte, director of the observatory at the University of New Hampshire, tells TIME.

What to consider during your solar eclipse trip

Protect your eyes.

During the build up towards the solar eclipse, many people like to observe the sun to watch as the moon slowly covers more and more of it. However, if you want to view this period of partial eclipse, it is critical to use proper eye protection. “The fact that there is an eclipse doesn't make it any more dangerous to look at the sun, but it makes people want to look at the sun,” says Gianforte.

Regular sunglasses do not provide enough protection for observing the eclipse, but the American Astronomical Society has a list of eclipse eye protection suppliers that meet the international safety standards. If you already wear eyeglasses, make sure the solar filter is placed on the outside of your glasses. Similarly, if you are viewing the partial eclipse through a camera, you need to make sure there is a certified solar filter on top of your camera lens. These filters are designed to protect your camera and your eyes from the dangerous portions of the sun's radiation. Whatever lens you view the eclipse through, “the closest thing to the Sun has to be the filter,” says Gianforte.

During totality, remove eye protection

A common misconception about solar eclipses is that you must keep your solar protection glasses on at all times. However, if you are in the path of totality and the sun is 100% covered by the moon, you can look directly at the eclipse without eye protection. The eclipse veterans TIME spoke with strongly recommended removing solar protection from both your eyes and camera equipment during the period of totality to truly take in the experience. “Once there's totality then you should absolutely take your glasses off and look directly at the sun,” says Bryans. “If you don’t do that you’ll miss a lot of the most interesting parts of it.”

However, it is important to remember that for the 2024 eclipse, the period of totality will last for a maximum of four and a half minutes according to NASA . Make sure to check the exact timing of totality in the place where you are viewing the eclipse from, and immediately resume using solar filters right before the period of totality ends.

Observe your surroundings

One of the most fascinating things to observe during an eclipse is not just the eclipse itself, but also the way the environment around you changes. During the period of totality, you’ll be able to feel the temperature drop by about 10°F. Animals such as birds, cats, and dogs, may start to act differently as they grapple with the confusion of the sun suddenly disappearing in the middle of the day. You may even be able to see some brighter stars and planets when you look at the sky once the sun is covered up.

What to consider after your solar eclipse trip

Journal about your experience.

After the eclipse, you may want to journal about your thoughts and feelings to help remember the experience and take in the beauty of what you just witnessed. Seeing an eclipse can sometimes cause people to feel overwhelmed with emotion, and journaling can be a good way to process those feelings. “It’s one of the most emotion-evoking natural events that you can see,” says Gianforte. “It’s like if you go to the Grand Canyon or Mount Everest… it's just hard to explain it. Everyone should, at least once in their life, see a total solar eclipse.”

Wait until the next day to travel back, if possible

Just as you may anticipate traffic jams on the way there, you should also expect similar delays on the way back. It’s a good idea to hang around an extra day since it could help you avoid congestion on the roads.
