How to Get to the Lavaux Vineyard Terraces

By Air: The nearest airport to Lavaux is Geneva Airport. It is located approximately 60 km away from the region. From the airport, you can take a train to Lausanne or Vevey and then connect to the regional train that runs along the vineyards. Alternatively, you can rent a car or take a taxi from the airport to Lavaux.

By Train: Lavaux is well connected by train. The two main train stations that serve the region are Cully and St-Saphorin. Both stations are located on the main line that runs from Lausanne to Montreux. You can take a train from Geneva, Zurich, or Bern to Lausanne, and then switch to the regional train that runs along the vineyards.

By Car: If you are driving, the A1/E25 highway runs along the northern edge of Lavaux, making it easy to access the region by car. However, it is important to note that the roads in Lavaux are narrow and winding, so it’s best to drive cautiously.

I really enjoyed this article as it brought back memories of my visit in 2012. My friends and I visited the Lavaux Vinorama in Rivaz which is excellent. Apart from viewing a very informative video presentation A year in the vineyards, we got to taste a number of wines from different wineries. A good option if you don’t have time to visit individual wineries.

The walks range from 1.7 to 11 km and take you through the best areas of the Lavaux Vineyards.

GOOD TO KNOW: The  village of Cully  is a great starting point for your trip around Lavaux terraced. Cully has a train station, and several trails that go uphill into the vineyards and their cute villages.

PRO TIP: Since the Lavaux Switzerland vineyards are vertical, prepare for a lot of hiking! As you get higher you will be rewarded with numerous places where you can try crisp white wine. If you want to visit a specific winery, make sure to check their opening hours online before your trip. 

Best time to visit Lavaux Switzerland

The best time to visit Lavaux Switzerland is during the fall.

You will get to see the harvesting of the grapes and taste some of the region’s signature wines. September and mid-October also offer plenty of sunshine and mild enough temperatures to be outside and enjoy the famous drink.

Fall is the best time to witness the families who have been running these vineyards working on the ground. The fall harvest is the busiest time in the area, which means access to some winemakers and their cellars could be limited.

How to get to Lavaux Switzerland

Lavaux is located on the northern shore of Lake Geneva between the Swiss cities Lausanne and Vevey . You can easily get to Lavaux from there via highway, railroad or boat. 

Visiting Lavaux by car

If you want to drive through Lavaux, take the scenic Chexbres highway which goes along Lake Geneva for about one hour.

To get there, take the A9 autobahn and take an exit on Chexbres to Lake Geneva. You will get the most fantastic views along the stretch of the road from Lausanne to Vevey. I recommend DiscoverCars , if you are looking for an affordable car rental in Switzerland. 

GOOD TO KNOW: If you drive to Lavaux, always follow the posted speed limit. Switzerland is notorious for its high fines for road violations, and you could get a VERY high fine even for a minor violation.

Visiting Lavaux by boat

A boat tours run across Lake Geneva after departing from Lausanne , Vevey , and Montreaux . While taking a boat ride on Lake Geneva is a must because of the beautiful views, you can easily catch a train to return to your destination.

Another option is to take one of the iconic steamboats that have the huge Swiss flag hoisted to the back. These steamboats often can be seen cutting across the waters of the lake. 

You can also book a sightseeing tour along Lake Geneva that will include several stops including Lavaux. 

Visiting Lavaux by train

RER/S1 is the best train to take to Lavaux. It runs along the lakeshore and connects Yverdon-les-Baines with Villeneuve. You need to get off at one of the S1 stops that include Pully, Lutry, Epesses, Vilette, Rivaz and St. Saphorin. Another train is S3 which stops at Cully, Lutry, and Pully.

GOOD TO KNOW: If you plan on traveling Switzerland by train, don’t forget to get the  Swiss Travel Pass which offers unlimited access to train travel, as well as other public transportation and free access to museums. Use the Swiss Pass to take a scenic boat tour on Lake Geneva on the CGN fleet as well as other routes.

Taking a tour of Lavaux Switzerland

Taking a guided tour of Lavaux is an excellent option if you don’t want to plan the logistics of your trip and want to enjoy a guided trip that will allow you to save time, money and also learn the history of this area from one of the local guides.

If you just want to roam around, begin your trip at one of the area’s villages that has a train station, hotels/restaurants or other amenities. Walk uphill into the vineyards and explore everything that the area has to offer. 

PRO TIP: While Lavaux, Switzerland vineyards are beautiful at any time, I recommend planning your trip during the sunny day as it will make for much better photos.

Absolutely! You don’t have to be a wine drinker to enjoy this place! Many visitors come here to enjoy the spectacular Swiss scenery with surrounding mountains and tour the ancient cellars where you can immerse yourself in the history and culture of this place.

Description

Covering 800 hectares, Lavaux is the largest contiguous vineyard region in Switzerland, and its daringly constructed hillside terraces have been protected by UNESCO since 2007. Right at the start of this tour, the medieval St. Saphorin with its narrow alleys and characteristic winegrowers' houses from the 16th to 19th centuries is worth a visit. The town's original church steeple still adorns many wine labels today. It is said that the Auberge de l'Onde , an establishment that can look back at a centuries-old tradition of hospitality, and where local delicacies are served on three floors, is worth sinning for. To carelessly pass by wine cellars and traditional pubs would be a crime. After all, those who want to experience the scenery with all the senses should also taste it. And after a glass of Chasselas the dynamic uphills and downhills of the trail to Lutry are twice as much fun. On some days of the week the "Lavaux Express" is ready to comfortably transport tired hikers through the World Heritage Region, as is the "Lavaux-Panoramic" train, which takes hikers through the same region.

The Lavaux Vineyard Terraces

The Lavaux Vineyard Terraces begin on the eastern outskirts of Lausanne, Switzerland and cover a roughly 30 km along the stretch of Lake Geneva’s northern shore in the canton (similar to a state) of Vaud. This is a stunning area and a wine route through the Lavaux vineyards is a popular activity for travelers hoping to enjoy the Swiss countryside. Even more, however, the Lavaux Vineyard Terraces are a UNESCO World Heritage Site , protected and so named because of this cultural outstanding universal value. The UNESCO  inscription for this site indicates it covers nearly 900 hectares of land area along the lower slopes of the mountainside, down to Lake Geneva, and it includes the villages within its borders.

History of the Lavaux Vineyard Terraces

Some evidence suggests the region’s vines were first established way back in the Roman times; however, the Lavaux Vineyard Terraces that preserved today were started during the 11th century, and it’s these more “modern” vines that form the foundation of the UNESCO World Heritage Site designation.

It was also around the 11th century when the Cistercian and Benedictine monasteries took control of the land. This enabled the region to produce high-quality wines that played an important role in the region’s economy—in the centuries since, it’s both the wine and the human’s unique interaction with the land—those striking and “daringly-constructed” hillside terraces in the area that most impress. A modern visit to Terrasses de Lavaux still includes wine cellars aged across nearly a millennium, traditional pubs, and more.

Swiss Wine Route

Even though the wine industry is huge in this region, there’s a good reason you may have never heard of it. The Swiss prefer to drink their wine! Switzerland exports less than 5% of its production each year.

An even bigger surprise, though, is the vastness of the wine region defined by the steep terraced landscape forming a wine route along the entire north shore of Lake Geneva, from the outskirts of the city of Geneva, which anchors the western end of the crescent-shaped lake, all the way to Montreux (yes, of Jazz Festival fame) on the eastern end. The lake’s north shore is in Switzerland, the south shore is in France . French is the primary language in the canton of Vaud.

The UNESCO-listed Lavaux Vineyard Terraces—which begin just east of Lausanne—are extra special for their 400 km of stone walls forming an intricate patchwork design of 10,000 terraces that were first constructed nearly 900 years ago. These terraces are the foundation of this little-known yet spectacularly picturesque wine region, which boasts deep vinicultural customs and intact living history.

Seventy percent of the Lavaux vineyards grow Chasselas, a white grape with few distinctive characteristics of its own. Instead, it carries the flavor of the terroir—the earth—and all that is nurtured in the Lavaux by the three suns: the one in the sky, the second reflected in the lake and the third reflected off the stone walls. The dry white wine is often enjoyed as an aperitif or with the region’s outstanding cheese or fish (especially the fresh perch; it is the specialty at the lakefront Restaurant Le Major Davel in the Lavaux village of Cully).

Walk a route through the UNESCO-listed vineyards from village to village and you’ll meet winemakers whose families have been caring for the grounds, the ancient walls, and the Chasselas grapes of this region for centuries. During the fall harvest though, it’s “all hands on deck,” limiting your access to the winemakers and their cellars, which operate sporadic hours during this season.

When to Visit the Lavaux Vineyard Terraces? Despite being the busy harvest season, fall is still an excellent time to visit. The yellowing grape leaves provide a unique fall foliage experience. There are plenty of places to taste the Lavaux wines, including tasting rooms (there are many), as well as cafes and restaurants that showcase simply prepared local ingredients and plenty of Chasselas wine. Perhaps the best take-home story though is the honor-system wine stands you’ll find outside the winemakers’ homes along the trails and roads throughout the Lavaux Vineyard Terraces. If you’re moving through along this Swiss wine route, be sure to take a bottle, then you can simply leave 10 Swiss francs in a wooden box.

You don’t have to be a wine connoisseur to make the Lavaux the focus of your next European vacation. The Lavaux vineyards and their ancient cellars are best explored slowly, by foot, and one sip at a time.

Not a wine drinker? No problem. The stunning Swiss mountains and lake scenery , the warm hospitality and the full-immersion of cultural history are the same, even if you stick to drinking Evian water, bottled directly across the lake in Evian, France. (Fun fact: You can see the village from the vineyards.)

Best Things to Do in Lavaux

Fete des Vignerons

Among the Lavaux region’s winemakers—many of whom are double-digit descendants of families who have been caring for the vines, the walls, and the earth since the 1500s—one will be crowned a winner at the 2019 Fete des Vignerons (July 18-August 11). This Festival of Winegrowers dates to 1797 and is unique in purpose: to honor the winegrowers and the workers, rather than the wine itself.

Its main event is an enormous theatrical production combining Old World pageantry with modern spectacle at the center of a purpose-built, lakeside stadium in the Market Square of nearby Vevey (just a 12-minute train ride east from Lausanne). The 2 ½ hour production is performed by a cast of 5,500 locals. Order tickets to one of 20 performances of the Fete des Vignerons here.

For many in the cast, this will be their first chance to participate since the Fete des Vignerons is mounted only once per generation by the Confrerie des Vignerons , the Brotherhood of Winegrowers. If you miss this one, you’ll have to wait another roughly 20 years.

If you can’t get tickets, it’s still worth spending time in Vevey during the festival to experience what locals call “the second stage.” The caveaux (cellars) are all open for tastings, and tables flow out to the streets where parades and performers keep everyone entertained. Each day of the Fete des Vignerons, different Swiss cantons (states) will send cultural ambassadors to present their traditional food and drink, music, dress, and more during Cantonal Days .

The Brotherhood of Winegrowers

The winegrower’s festival itself has been placed by UNESCO on its representative list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity. Since the festival only happens every 20 years, you can see exhibits and learn more about the centuries-old viniculture traditions at the the Museum of the Brotherhood of Winegrowers , located in the town of Vevey.

The Brotherhood (think of it as an Order of the Religion of Wine) is believed to have been formed in the Middle Ages with the express purpose of controlling the quality of the work of the winegrower-producer—which is still its mandate today.

Of note at the museum, housed in a 16th-century building belonging to the Brotherhood of Winegrowers are scale models of past stadiums, each one purposely built for the festival and located beside Lake Geneva in the Market Square of Vevey. You can also watch film clips from 20th-century festivals and take a seat at the table where the 24 Council members (half are wine-makers and the other half are landowners) meet twice a year.

Planning tip : The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday 11:00 – 17:00.

Exploring the Lavaux Vineyard Terraces

Beautiful boat tours run the entire region , or you can easily establish a base in the larger cities of Lausanne or Vevey, which bookend the Lavaux Vineyard Terraces, and then use your SBB Railway pass to hop between villages. As you’d expect, wine tourism is well organized and the canton of Vaud offers an in-depth online portal to help visitors connect with its six wine regions, Lavaux being one of them.

For instance, the wine shop and bar Les 11 Terres in the village of Epesses (in the heart of Lavaux) organizes year-round, multi-lingual guided walks through the vineyards.

Self-Guided Biking & Cycling in the Vineyards

You can absolutely explore the vineyards on a self-guided trip. The tourism region of Montreux Riviera has excellent maps of the area to use for self-guided tours. You can download or order one on its website. The map labeled as “Walks” clearly identifies all of the villages, points of interest, train stations, and start/end points and distances of six different walks, each one ranging from 1.7 to 11 km and taking you through the best parts of the Lavaux Vineyard Terraces.

You can even explore this Swiss wine route without a plan! A good starting point is the village of Cully (pronounced coo-yee) where there is a train station, several hotels, and several paths that lead uphill into the vineyards and their tiny villages within.

Wine Tasting in the Lavaux Vineyard Terraces

The easiest, most reliably open place to taste Lavaux wines is at the Lavaux Vinorama —a tourism center disguised as a wine bar and located off the main highway called the Route de Lac, near Rivaz (where there’s also a train station). They carry 300 local wines to try or buy and show an interesting film about the cultural importance of the Lavaux wine route. It’s also a reliable restroom stop! Just saying.

There’s a cooperative wine-tasting room in Riex, a speck of a village tucked within the vineyards reachable by an uphill walk from Cully (where there’s a train station); you can also drive there. A short walk east of Riex is Epesses where you can stop at the 11 Terres for wine and local treats such as honey, cheese, and chocolate. The possibilities are endless as you walk along the Route de la Corniche that cuts across the hillside.

Not in the mood to walk it? Hitch a ride in an open-top van to taste local wines combined with a scenic tour of the Lavaux.  

Tour by Boat

A great way to see many of the lakeside villages along Lake Geneva (locally known as Lac Lémon) is by boat—you can even do gorgeous long boat rides from Lausanne . There’s really no lovelier perch than to sit on the outdoor deck or in the light-filled dining room and to quietly cruise along the waterfront and even along the southern shore which belongs to France (two countries in one cruise!).

Lake Geneva Museums You Shouldn’t Miss

Make time to visit the Olympic Museum in Lausanne . The building is set within sculpture-filled gardens overlooking Lake Geneva and offers a gorgeous view of snow-capped Alps across the lake. Inside is filled with inspiring Olympic moments throughout history. There’s also the lovely TOM Cafe with a view, that you can enter from the north entrance without museum admission.

Planning tip : Check for hours; the museum is closed on Mondays.

Chaplin’s World is near Vevey and it’s a beautiful and poignant ode to the silent-film star Charlie Chaplin who lived out his last 25 years of his life in the manor house that is the basis for the visitor experience. It’s just a 15-minute bus ride from the Vevey train station (bus #212 to the “Chaplin” bus stop). Villa “Le Lac” Le Corbusier

Officially known as Petite villa au bord du lac Léman, this is one of several world heritage designed homes designed by Le Corbusier . The home is quite small and was designed for his mother, who lived there until she died at the age of 100. Note that it’s right on the highway, and it can be very difficult to park. The home is owned and operated by the Le Corbusier Foundation and be ready to pay an entrance fee of 12 Swiss Francs.

The easiest way to visit Lavaux is to fly to the Geneva Airport, where you can easily transfer to the train station with the same ease as changing terminals in a domestic airport. From there, it is only a 45-minute journey to Lausanne, or an hour to Vevey.

There is no easier way to travel through the Lake Geneva region than by train. You have a couple of options.

Where to Stay in the Lavaux Region

Lavaux wine tour

Take a tour through the bewitching Swiss wine-producing region of Lavaux, where steep terraced vineyards line the banks of Lake Geneva. You’ll taste wines unavailable anywhere else, since very little Swiss wine is exported. Enjoy lunch with a local wine producer, visit a medieval fortress and learn about the history of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

From your hotel in Montreux or Vevey, you’ll be driven to Lavaux, where you’ll hear some stories about this region’s curious character. After a visit to a historic fortress, you’ll have the opportunity to taste several of the region’s distinctive wines, both reds and whites, most of which are drunk within Switzerland’s borders.

Have lunch of local meats or cheese fondue with a local wine producer, paired with the appropriate wine, of course. Then head back toward your hotel, passing by some of the villages along the way.

If you visit in September and October, you may have the chance to see the grape harvest.

Your driver will pick you up at your hotel in either Montreux or Vevey, and you’ll begin your journey through the UNESCO World Heritage region of Lavaux, where Switzerland produces some of its wine.

This singular region, along the eastern banks of Lake Geneva, enjoys a temperate climate but has some Mediterranean character due to the sun reflecting off the lake and onto the south-facing, stone-walled terraces, which produce both red and white grape varieties.

Your guide will introduce you to the history of the region, including a visit to a medieval fortress that offers sweeping views of the vineyards and the lake below. Then, you’ll taste some of the wines produced here. There’s very little global knowledge of Swiss wines, since only 5% of it is ever exported, and that only to Germany. Most Swiss wine is consumed within the country itself, making this tour an excellent opportunity to experience wines that aren’t widely available anywhere else.

You’ll have a chance to learn about the heritage of Swiss grapes, including the most commonly found chasselas, a white grape that produces a full, dry and fruity wine. Pinot noir is also popular here.

For lunch, you’ll visit a wine producer who will provide a meal of either cheese fondue or assiette Valaisanne — a local charcuterie board — accompanied with a suitable local wine.

If you visit in September or October, you might be able to witness the grape harvest, locally known as vendange. The grapes are hand-picked, then carried down through the terraces in vast barrels. For the steepest terraces, the harvesters get assistance from a helicopter — an instance of old tradition meeting new technology.

On your way back to your hotel, you can pass through some of the small villages that dot the lakeshore, such as Lutry, and see the locals going about their daily lives.

Rail route of the month: vines on the line from Avignon to Lyon, France

Our slow travel expert takes the train through the Rhône’s wine country, hoping for grand cru views and a glass of Condrieu

T rains and wine make natural partners, be it a glass of crisp white over a leisurely lunch in a restaurant car while cruising through the Alps or a rail itinerary that meanders through a region noted for its fine wines. Many of Europe’s most prized wine regions lend themselves naturally to exploration by rail.

Take the train from São Bento station in Porto to Pocinho, for example, for fine views of the estates that have underpinned the port trade. Other classic European wine regions where trains weave through vineyards include Tokay in Hungary, Germany’s Moselle valley, the Ebro valley in Spain (for fine Rioja) and Switzerland’s Lavaux region where one grand cru white, made from Chasselas grapes, even plays up the rail connection: the Massy family’s classy Dézaley is called Chemin de Fer .

North from Avignon to Valence

It is a tempting rail-wine connection that brings me to Avignon on a damp early spring day, to explore the Rhône valley. Few travellers are around. Avignon Centre railway station looks handsome with its yellow and white walls. This is the jumping-off point for the regular slow trains to Lyon (a journey of two and a half hours). This regional rail route once carried grand express trains, but no longer. The TGVs dash north to Paris on a high-speed line that tracks well east of the Rhône valley. Only regional trains stick to the old valley route, along the way taking in a roll call of grand appellations that line either side of the Rhône as one follows the railway upstream from Avignon. The railway passes Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Hermitage, while later in the journey there are fine views across the river to Condrieu and Côte-Rôtie.

Slipping out of Avignon Centre on the blue-and-white train bound for Lyon, there are views to the left of the city’s ancient walls, then we cross the Canal Crillon. We have barely left Avignon’s suburban sprawl when we pause at a station called Sorgues-Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Not a vine in sight, but a few moments later, the distinctive low hill which is home to Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s classiest vineyards is visible away to the west, while on the other side of the railway the rough Provençal countryside stretches east to the Vacqueyras wine district and, in the distance, the hill country around Gigondas and Beaumes de Venise, the latter noted for its aromatic Muscat.

Our train loops slightly west to serve Orange, after which we have our first real encounter with the main channel of the River Rhône. It isn’t all pretty – we pass cement works, graveyards of abandoned cars and nuclear power plants.

Halfway through the journey, I stop for lunch in Valence where the elegant design of Valence Ville railway station recalls the architectural idiom of the Grand Trianon at Versailles. I know this route well, and in either direction a stop at Valence is mandatory. Coming from the north, it’s the first town that embodies the energetic vitality of the scented south of France, and heading north it’s a chance to bid the south adieu . And embrace the famous vineyards that lie ahead.

Beyond Valence, the valley sides close in and the countryside, now a little greener, hosts vineyards from which come powerful red wines made from the Syrah grape, and many opulent whites, the best of which reflect the finesse of three very contrasting grapes: Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier. The latter brings the prospect of a heady perfume of orange blossom, apricots and almonds.

Northern Rhône vineyards

Leaving Valence, there’s a view over the Rhône to Cornas, renowned for its assertive, peppery reds. Then we cross the River Isère and soon we are cruising past a litany of celebrated vineyards. Signs mark the prized parcels of land owned by illustrious winemakers like Chave, Chapoutier and Jaboulet.

There’s a neck-craning view of a chapel high on a slope above the railway. Not any chapel but the one which dominates a parcel of land in Hermitage known as La Chapelle, associated with revered red wines that develop gently over decades in the bottle.

To the left, the slow-flowing waters of the Rhône and to the right the gentle slopes draped with vineyards of the Crozes-Hermitage appellation. Across the river is Saint-Joseph. But the best is yet to come. For lovers of the Viognier grape, and I count myself among their number, the high point of this journey is Condrieu and Chateau-Grillet. The steep slopes of both appellations are visible on the other bank of the river as we approach the station at Saint-Clair-Les Roches where I stay overnight in the Hotel Bellevue (doubles from €115, room only).

It wins no prizes for architectural ambition, but among the hotel’s many redemptive qualities are a Rhône view as fine as its name implies, good food, and access via a bridge over the river to the Condrieu vineyards on the west bank.

“We call that Guigalville,” says the waiter at the hotel gesturing to the vineyards over the river and referring to the family who have done so much to promote the wines of Condrieu and neighbouring Côte-Rôtie. So the next day, I take a local bus to Ampuis to visit the Guigal estate and taste some local wines.

The Condrieu is a star, with its perfect balance of acidity and fruit. Then it’s back to Saint-Clair and the onward train north up the valley to Lyon. There’s a tantalising view across the river to the turreted Château d’Ampuis, home of the Guigal family. Our train pauses at Vienne, a riverside town famous for its Roman remains. Then we run non-stop to Lyon, a hop of 20 minutes, passing through Seyssuel where ambitious young winemakers are buying up land amid rumours that its wines could offer all the finesse of Condrieu and Côte-Rôtie.

Now the last of the vineyards are gone and we enter Lyon, passing factories and oil refineries, power stations and sewage works. I note that the train I am on continues beyond Lyon to Mâcon, giving the option of extending my wine tour north to include Beaujolais and the southernmost portion of the Mâconnais.

I am tempted, but Swiss whites beckon, so I alight at Lyon and make tracks for the Lavaux region on the north side of Lake Geneva (Lac Léman) where I have an appointment with a glass of Luc Massy’s grand cru Dézaley Chemin de Fer.

Travel details

There are 11 direct regional trains each weekday from Avignon Centre to Lyon. The service is less frequent at weekends with nine direct trains on Saturdays and seven on Sundays. The one-way fare from Avignon Centre to Lyon Part Dieu via the Rhône valley is €40.70. Purchase at the station before departure or in advance via Rail Europe for £36 (tickets priced in sterling no longer carry a booking fee).
