Over three decades the lifelong friends that are the members of elbow have created one of the most remarkable stories in British contemporary music.

Formed in Bury in the 90’s when all the members were together at sixth form college, elbow’s history now encompasses seven studio albums, a long list of awards and a place in the roll call of great British bands.

For a group with such a long history, the sense that they are yet to achieve their total potential has pushed elbow on throughout their long career. Their most recent albums, ‘The Take Off and Landing of Everything’ (2014) and ‘Little Fictions’ (2017) have both debuted at Number One in the UK album charts and the band’s touring schedule has seen them play to ever increasing audiences across the world alongside first-time forays to the likes of Mexico, where their debut in the country was greeted by an audience of 80,000 at Corona Capital 2017. Such a high-profile debut holds no terrors for elbow, the band whose two Glastonbury Pyramid sunset slots are regarded by critics as amongst the finest moments in the festival’s long history.

Such a prestigious history is packed with highlights. Their 2008 Mercury Prize win for fourth album, ‘The Seldom Seen Kid’, transformed them from respected band into household names, it’s attendant single ‘One Day Like This’ becoming the soundtrack to everything from the BBC’s Beijing Olympics coverage to the Big Brother final. Following the Mercury win, the 2009 BRIT award for Best British Group and three Ivor Novello songwriting awards for ‘One Day Like This’, Grounds For Divorce’ and ‘Magnificent (She Says)’.

Lead singer Guy Garvey, who also has his own BBC 6 Music radio show, has been rightly commended with two awards in 2018 for his contribution to UK music. The Music Manager’s Forum and Featured Artist’s Coalition acclaimed Guy as the ‘Artist’s Artist’ at their 2018 Artist and Manager Awards whilst BASCA presented Guy with a Gold Badge award, in recognition of his long contribution to the musical and lyrical canon of British popular culture.

elbow first came to national attention with the band’s inclusion in The John Peel Festive 50 for ‘Powder Blue’ from the debut EP, ‘Noisebox’, in 1998 and, throughout the intervening time, their connection to music lovers had been a recurring theme. Often cited by other artists and familiar names from popular culture including the disparate likes of Elton John, John Cale, Ian Rankin, Michael Caine and Dame Katherine Grainger, the love that the UK has for the band is possibly best demonstrated by their high standing in the all-time Desert Island Discs chart, one of only a handful of contemporary acts to be chosen by the public.

As you would expect, much has changed for the band in those decades. The young men of the Mercury nominated 2001 debut ‘Asleep In The Back’ are now fathers. Their journey to date has taken them from a rehearsal room in Bury across the globe, with band members working on side projects and solo projects in addition to elbow. Guy’s debut solo album, ‘Courting The Squall’, entered the UK charts at Number 3 in 2016 and he has found time to write and perform on film soundtracks and collaborate with Craig Armstrong on recent track ‘Cornflower (Marelle)’. Keyboardist Craig Potter has expanded his production work from elbow’s albums to ex Beta Band frontman Steve Mason’s acclaimed album ‘Meet The Humans’ and working with C Duncan. Guitarist Mark Potter formed blues band The Plumedores. Yet, at heart, elbow were, are and will be the same band, driven to create and continually better their ongoing legacy by the simple maxim that Guy proclaimed on the release of ‘Newborn’, the NME and Melody Maker single of the week that really made people start taking notice of them back in 1999:

"Honesty is a word that surfaces over and over when we are writing which is why I think the romance in our music is always balanced with realism. We are each other’s biggest influences. Basically, this is where we have been for all our adult lives.”

elbow are currently in the studio working on their eighth studio album, due for release in the autumn of 2019 and will play a series of shows next summer. See www.elbow.co.uk for all confirmed dates.

Live reviews

I saw Elbow on the 3rd of their 4 sell-out nights at the Manchester Apollo. Huge fan of the band, as I think they paint their hometown in a way nobody else does.

I think the problem with seeing Elbow live when one is at the age I am (first year uni student at the time of writing) is that they have aged and so have their fans. I'm not personally a huge fan of the new album and prefer their older work, but leaving that aside, it can be painful to see Guy working hard to get an average 45 year-old crowd to participate in doing things enthusiastically. This has a wearing effect on the gig and its atmosphere, as the venue is too large to be intimate, yet the crowd too reluctant to be excited and properly involved.

Elbow's music is good, don't get me wrong. Very good, in fact. Some of it is sublime, and I was delighted that they played "Great Expectations", one of their very best, on the night. But it doesn't seem so great in a huge, hollow hall of the seemingly semi-interested, or when combined with some not-quite-as-good newer music they've made.

It was also over £40.00, which was quite a lot for a medium gig. I love Elbow and that won't change, but I'd hesitate before going to see them again considering the stage they and their fans have reached.

Elbow and John Grant, Magnificent I say.

My fist Elbow gig and also my first John Grant gig

Up first an eight song set by John Grant fizzling with good humour, swear words aplenty and that beautiful tenor voice Marz and Glacier were outstanding.

Elbow came on stage just after 8:30, Mr Garvey in 90’s handwaving top form, a little demob happy as this was the last gig for some time as he played master of ceremonies though Elbows greatest hits. The voice is just so pure as the music swells around his word pictures and his bro romance with John Grant is hilarious . The whole set was outstanding with light show and back screens to match.Disapointed that there was no sad captains, but the duet between Garvey and Grant made up for it. Loved little fictions, grounds for divorce, Lippy kids but hearing one day like this live for the first time made my night. Come back soon Elbow, until then I will throw those curtains wide.

John Grant Five Stars

Elbow Five stars

The whole evening not enough stars in the universe to do it justice!

Elbow have been a band I've wanted to see for so long. So back in April when they were announced to play in Cork I knew this was finally my chance. I got there early so I could get to the front and ended up front and centre, straight in front of Guy. They came out on stage and there was no desperation from other fans to get a glimpse of the band, just sheer joy that these wonderful musicians had taken to the stage. Their show was absolutely mesmerising, from the beautiful moments of The Night Will Always Win to the adrenaline pumping Grounds For Divorce, Guy Garvey had the Cork crowd in the palm of his hands and loving every single second of it. The night ended with Guy stating "Cork you've been wonderful, have a great night, in fact, no, have a great fucking life!" Then blasted into a rendition of One Day Like This that'll stay with me for the rest of my days, it was such a pure and beautiful moment. If you've ever wanted to see Elbow and you get even half a chance to then take it. You won't regret it.

This was a family outing and our 2nd time seeing Elbow at Hammersmith Apollo. We always go for standing room near the front. Guy Garvey is such an incredible frontman with an amazing voice. He introduced each song and also the band including the new drummer Alex Reeves who has a hard act to follow but was excellent. Richard Jupp left the band last year after 25 years. Pete Turner, Mark Potter and Craig Potter were all superb and the 2 female backing vocalists, violinists and percussionists were perfection - so multi-talented.

The sound at the Apollo was excellent and it feels like quite an intimate gig. Elbow played all the favourites and a few of the songs from the latest album Little Fictions, including the magnificent "Magnificent". The "word perfect" enthusiastic audience sang along brilliantly to "One Day Like This".

A perfect Sunday evening.

It was advertised as a "stripped back"show, so I wasn't sure what to expect.

For Elbow, this meant just the 4 members of the band, plus Alex Reeves on drums - none of the usual strings or brass normally found on tour with them, and no fancy back drops and lighting, just a fairly basic light show.

It was a fairly intimate gig in the O2 Ritz, something like 1500 people, and it was amazing! Guy Garvey comes across as the bloke next door who would find any excuse to go for a pint with you. Everyone is his friend.

They played 8 songs, 3 from the new album, and 5 from older albums - and they were amazing! They are great in the big arenas, but even better in a smaller venue!

Waited years to see Elbow only to have to leave after a few songs last night at Newport because the lighting was horrific!! What was with the constant very long (like whole song-long!) severe flashing lights?!? I swear it was illegal :( I have photosensitive epilepsy but love going to live gigs. This was the WORST I've come across in terms of lighting that I've even been to. It's totally unnecessary, your music doesn't need it, and you need to think about accessibility for ALL your fans. I don't expect to pay £70 for 2 tickets then have to leave. Luckily the Newport staff were great and made sure I was ok. I'm so disappointed as I'd waited years.

Awesome gig, absolutely loved it, a great selection of songs, old and new, all classics.

The whole gig appreciated by young and old alike, I have never seen such an age range at a Saturday night gig at the Apollo, was wonderful to see, a real family event.

They come across as being honest, genuine and very down to earth and likeable people. Their lyrics are poetic, their music melodic, powerful and evocative, uniquely placed in today's over produced, churned out processed music scene!

Shame the support C Duncan was so atrocious, what a load of drivel! The only dampener on the eveneing.

Guy and the gang did not cease to amaze with pitch perfect vocals and brilliant interaction with the crowd. “Manchester harmony” he called it. The venue is amazing and just the right size with trains passing by to Deansgate. This causes a great response from the crowd and passengers all waving at each other.

My only negative is the sound curfew as it’s a built up area. I’m sure those all sat on their balconies getting it free wouldn’t complain. Well may be about Kylie the night after.

In all, a brilliant set list and performance from Manchester’s finest. Can’t wait for new album.

Emotional. I wanted to see this band live for ages, but, they do not cross path very often with me, (I am on tour too).

Great venue size. I was close!!! Sound was fantastic. But was it the voice??? Umm... The voice was insane, but.... everything was well balanced as well.

I was already a sick fan.Now, I have proof.

This music grabs every inch of my soul.

I was confused by the mixed audience.. I was one of the youngest. What do people my age like???? Obviously, lost souls!!! It just confirmed my undying irrational love for that band...!!!!! Ouf. Still recovering!!!

First time we have been to see Elbow live and i must say that we were not disappointed. The venue was rather a strange one being in a sports center next to the swimming pool. Support from C Duncan was good. Elbow seem to have a way of ingratiating themselves with the crowd from the get go. There are plenty of songs were they get the crowd to join in and it makes the experience of seeing them that more enjoyable. I would thoroughly recommend going to see them even if you are not necessarily a fan.

Louder Than War

Elbow announce new album and tour dates!

Elbow

After gracing our smaller venues back in 2021 one of which I reviewed here , Elbow return with news of their 10th album and a string of dates including the new enormo dome of the Co-Op Live in Manchester. The band explain below…

elbow return in May 2024 with UK tour dates to accompany the release of their tenth studio album.

elbow’s first arena tour since 2018 marks a moment for the band to deliver the perfect show in celebration of that ten album career as lead singer Guy Garvey explains:

“We love the intimacy of theatres, but we have some very big songs and the electricity of 20,000 people singing along cannot be denied. So, the big rooms it is and big shows they will be. Can’t wait to see everybody again.”

The dates see elbow revisit the scenes of some of their greatest shows and also break new ground in Manchester, where they will be among the first artists to perform at the new Co-op Live, the largest indoor concert space in the UK. That night will add another landmark hometown moment to a history that includes shows at legendary venues from the Roadhouse and The Night And Day Café to multiple nights at the Manchester O2 Apollo and headline shows at the city’s AO Arena, Castlefield Bowl, and the Bridgewater Hall with the Hallé orchestra.

In contrast, their return to London’s The O2 will mark their fifth show at the iconic venue, following 2018’s sell out, alongside returns to Brighton, Nottingham, Leeds, and Glasgow’s OVO Hydro.

The landmark release of a tenth studio album in March of 2024 for one of the UK’s most beloved bands underlines the importance of elbow to the story of contemporary British music. Having established a reputation for crafting timeless music and cemented their position as one of the country’s most respected bands with their fourth studio album, the multi-platinum certified ‘The Seldom Seen Kid’, the band are now rightly regarded as one of the most influential acts of the last twenty years.

Their nine studio albums to date have seen elbow amass a host of awards, including a BRIT, a Mercury prize, and multiple Ivor Novello songwriting awards. After performing at the 2012 London Olympics closing ceremony the band were granted the freedom of their hometown of Bury.

The new album was written and recorded in their individual studios in Manchester and London and progressed with a period together in the Cotswolds. Production and mixing were finalised at their spiritual home of Blueprint Studios, Salford, central to all elbow albums.

Fans are able to register for a ticket pre-sale for the arena tour from Friday 20th October by pre-ordering a special limited edition of the new album from www.elbow.co.uk. The pre-sale will go live on Wednesday 25th October at 10am. Tickets for the shows are available on general sale from Friday 27th October.

All dates are as follows:

Tuesday 7th Brighton Centre

Thursday 9th London The O2

Friday 10th Birmingham Resorts World Arena

Saturday 11th Glasgow OVO Hydro

Sunday 12th Leeds First Direct Arena

Tuesday 14th Manchester Co-op Live

Wednesday 15th Nottingham Motorpoint Arena

Elbow announce 2024 UK arena tour and tell us about their “inky” new album

Guy Garvey tells NME what to expect from the huge shows and their "dark" but "groovy" 10th album, as well as the battle for Manchester's Night & Day and the chances of seeing the band at Glasto 2024

Elbow, 2023. Credit: Press

Elbow have announced details of a 2024 UK arena tour. Check them out below, along with frontman Guy Garvey telling us what to expect from their “inky” and “groove-based” new album.

The Mercury -winning Manchester indie veterans will be hitting the road for a run of arena dates next May, while also promising the follow-up to their 2021 album ‘Flying Dream 1’ .

Asked if the massive venues on the horizon were a sign that fans should expect an arena-sized album, Garvey replied: “It is. It’s in very sharp contrast to the last record.”

“The last one was made in lockdown and was very gentle, wistful and based on life, childhood, memories and fatherhood – all these very wholesome things,” the singer and radio DJ told NME. “With the bruising that the pandemic had given everyone, it felt the right time to do a record like that. But it came and it went like a goose fart in the fog. Not many people know that it was released because everyone released their records at the same time. It was released on the same day as Adele . Now it’s a great lost love for many people.

“That’s a beautiful, gentle record, whereas this is groove-based. It tackles some pretty full-on subjects, and it’s loads of fun as well.”

Elbow

Teasing what to expect from the “big fat record,” Garvey promised that it’s “got some dirt under its fingernails for sure”.

“It deals with some pretty inky stuff,” he said of the lyrics on the upcoming 10th album. “There are a couple of wholesome tunes on there, but by and large there’s everything from a maniacal rant from the point of view of a frontman who’s lost his mind, to really awful portraits of toxic relationships failing – all set to a very thick, guitar, drum and groove-based thing.”

He continued: “As always, it’s produced by Craig Potter – who’s getting more and more into his hip-hop –  and Al our drummer has been writing more on this record. We all share a love of bands like The Meters, so it’s kind of garage-y in a way with Vox organs and a lot of alt-American country sounds. It doesn’t sound like anything that we’ve done before. There’s everything from Stiff Records and what Elvis Costello was doing in his early years, right through to Afrika Bambaataa. We’re wearing our influences a bit more proudly.”

Garvey added: “Although it’s a dark subject matter, that’s just what the music drew out of me, lyrically. There’s loads of fun on there as well. We had a hoot making it.”

The band, who achieved mainstream success when they won the Mercury Prize for their acclaimed fourth album ‘The Seldom Seen Kid’ in 2008, will “definitely” be delivering a career-spanning set across the tour, with Garvey now finally feeling comfortable that Elbow have the chops to play such big rooms.

“The first time we played arenas, we didn’t have enough big numbers to do an arena set,” he told NME . “We went to all kinds of different lengths to bring the room in and make it more intimate. We had a B-stage, a walkway, all this stuff – but now we’ve got more than enough massive songs. I think it’s going to be loads of fun.

“We love playing theatres and the intimacy they afford you, but there’s also something great in hearing 20,000 people sing together. I can’t wait for it.”

Do arenas inspire Garvey to pull some different moves and perhaps ‘get his Bono on’?

“Wuhey! Well, let’s see,” he replied. “You can never tell where the Scotch and the adrenaline is going to take you. She’s a wild ride, as long as you stay in the saddle. We’ve never done two gigs the same because we never want to get bored of it, so we’ve got all kinds of tricks planned and really interesting support acts on the cards. I can’t say any more than that.”

The upcoming tour will see the band play the new Co-Op Live Arena in their native Manchester – a first that Garvey was looking forward to, given that his mother used to work for the supermarket back in the 1940s. While living in Brixton in London now, Garvey still frequents the North as often as he can.

“I go up to Manchester to work with the boys, but I’ve been living just down the road from Brixton for about six years,” he said. “I’m half and half, really. I’m up in Manchester [enough] not to miss it too much. I wasn’t there for the Tory conference. They were basically digging their own grave from what I could see. There really are only criminals and fascists left, aren’t there? They’re properly fucking out there, this lot.

“They literally have no idea what they’re doing, and haven’t done for a long time.”

The frontman’s ire also extended to those failing to protect the legendary Manchester music venue Night & Day , which Garvey has been a vocal supporter of as it continues to face the threat of closure.

“That impossible situation is soon to be sorted out one way or another,” he said. “I have to say I’m hugely disappointed in the council. There’s some skullduggery going on. It just doesn’t make sense. It’s a PR disaster for everyone in the council. I don’t understand it, personally. I really hope that they do the right thing.

He went on: “Businesses with as much heritage and ongoing function should be protected. You can’t justify putting up shiny new buildings, built on the success of little ones like that without protecting them. Nobody in the mayor’s office or at the council seems to have the courage of their convictions.

“It is completely insane. It’s a small family running a family business. Jennifer Smithson’s dad Yan is gone. As well as being frightened of being able to keep the doors open for her, her staff and her family, she’s got her father’s memory to consider in all of this. They could take all of this off her plate by protecting the place and doing the right thing and putting a blue plaque on the building.”

New music, arenas and venue-defending aside, Garvey was looking forward to a busy schedule with Elbow in the coming year – but could we see the band return to Glastonbury ?

“I’ve not heard anything yet, but whether we’re playing or not I’ll be there, because I always am,” Garvey replied. “Isn’t it amazing that we have this, the best party in the world every year?”

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Legendary rock band announces new tour dates after singer’s injury

A fractured larynx and vocal cord damage are no joke for a hard-rock singer to recover from. Especially a 76-year-old frontman with a still-big voice, like Steven Tyler .

Nearly a year after Aerosmith put the brakes on a long-gestating farewell tour just a few shows in after Tyler injured his voice during a Sept. 9, 2023 show at a New York arena, the band’s about to be, ahem, back in the saddle.

The “Peace Out Tour” will resume September 20 in Pittsburgh. The 40-date arena tour runs through February 26 in Buffalo and includes a New Year’s Eve show in the band’s hometown of Boston. Complete list of tour dates at aerosmith.com .

Aerosmith’s decades of hits include “Dream On,” “Walk This Way,” “Sweet Emotion,” “Back in the Saddle,” “Janie’s Got A Gun,” “Crazy” and “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing.”

The band features Tyler, guitarists Joe Perry and Brad Whitford and bassist Tom Hamilton.

Unlike many classic rock groups, Aerosmith’s original lineup remained intact through most of their history. However in recent years, original drummer Joey Kramer has been replaced onstage by John Douglas, Kramer’s former drum tech. Buck Johnson , an Alabama native who also tours with Brother Cane and Hollywood Vampires, is Aerosmith’s touring keyboardist/backing vocalist .

Blues-rockers The Black Crowes , known for ‘90s hits like “Jealous Again” and “Remedy,” are the support act for all dates of Aerosmith’s “Peace Out Tour.”

The Black Crowes previously opened for Aerosmith on the Crowes’ first-ever big tour, back in 1990. Led by brothers Chris and Rich Robinson , on vocals and guitar, respectively, Black Crowes recently released “Happiness Bastards,” their first album of all-original songs in 15 years .

Aerosmith’s classic albums include their 1973 self-titled debut, 1975′s “Toys in the Attic,” 1976 release “Rocks,” 1987 comeback LP “Permanent Vacation” and ‘93 mega-seller “Get a Grip.” Aerosmith’s most recent album was “Music from Another Dimension” from 2012.
