Bad nauheim pays tribute to famous former resident, us army pvt. elvis presley.

Two years after Bad Nauheim last rocked to the strains of Elvis Presley soundalikes with slight German accents, it again welcomed thousands of visitors to its mid-August celebration of the king of rock ’n’ roll.

Women in swing dresses walked through the spa town’s parks, and couples danced in the street on Aug. 15, the last day of the European Elvis Festival.

Next to the Hotel Villa Grunewald, where Elvis briefly stayed in 1958 when he arrived in Germany to serve as a U.S. Army private, people laid flowers and left candles and pictures at a stone memorial to the star. Nearby, Germans had their picture taken next to shiny Chevrolets and Cadillacs.

The 19th edition of the Elvis festival also brought a new attraction to Bad Nauheim: a bronze statue of the American icon on a bridge spanning the aptly named Usa River.

To comply with social distancing rules, crowd control officials allowed only small groups of people onto the bridge to take pictures by the statue, which replicates a pose Presley struck on the same spot in a photo shoot in March 1959.

Once on the bridge, people ignored coronavirus rules and stood close to one another before handing their phones to strangers to take snaps of them close to what some said wasn't the best likeness of Elvis.

Coronavirus-wary Elvis fans can take photos by the statue after the festival is over; it’s staying put on the bridge.

The three-day tribute to the King has been held every year since 2002 except for last year, when it was canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic. It always takes place over the weekend in August that falls closest to the anniversary of Presley’s death on Aug. 16, 1977.

Presley was already a star when he shipped out to Germany in early 1958 to serve in Company D, 32nd Tank Battalion, 3rd Armor Division, based in Friedberg, about 4 1/2 miles south of Bad Nauheim, where he first lived in the Hotel Villa Grunewald on what is now Elvis-Presley-Platz.

Soon after arriving, he and his entourage, including his father, grandmother and some friends from Tennessee, had to move to a house on Goethestrasse, to make way for King Saud of Saudi Arabia, who had booked the entire hotel for one of his regular visits for spa treatments in the town.

For those who have never heard of Presley, aren’t huge fans of his or visit the town outside of the festival dates, Bad Nauheim has plenty of other attractions, many within walking distance of one another.

At the art nouveau Sprudelhof, visitors can sip the waters that bubble up from springs under Bad Nauheim and are said to treat heart conditions and backache.

They can stroll through the Kurpark, go paddleboating on its lake, tour a duck habitat or breathe in air laced with sea salt at any of the five giant “gradierbauten” around town.

Near the bridge and statue, bronze plaques lining the “walk of fame” show that other notable Americans — including a young Franklin D. Roosevelt, media magnate William Hearst and his wife, actress Marion Davies, Albert Einstein, Mark Twain, actress Lilian Gish, and Gen. George Patton — also spent time in Bad Nauheim.

Hearst reportedly met Italian dictator Benito Mussolini in the town and is said to have described him afterward as “a marvelous man.”

But no one was bending over any of their commemorative plaques snapping photos in mid-August. At that time of year, Bad Nauheim and its visitors move to the beat of Elvis Presley, probably the coolest resident the town has ever had.

Hotel Villa Grunewald

With just 16 bedrooms this hotel is one of the most  elegant and sought-after places to stay –  especially because this is where Elvis lived for  much of his time in Bad Nauheim...and we’ve  booked the whole hotel for our tour in November/December ! Located overlooking the beautiful Spa  Gardens and Park in the centre of the town it is  within easy walking distance of the Elvis sights,  shops, bars and restaurants. The rooms (except for  the one that Elvis had which has been kept as it  was - and which you'll get to visit inside) are all modern with private bathrooms and  the hotel has a small restaurant and Lobby Bar but  many who repeatedly stay here say that its biggest  asset (other than the Elvis connection, of course)  are the friendly, welcoming staff. A continental  breakfast is included.

Walking tour of Elvis Presley sites in Bad Nauheim with Strictly Elvis.

One of the hotels Elvis stayed in while on military service. We stayed at this wonderful hotel. Many original features. Clean, great service, great staff, great hotel. Comfortable room. En suite plus a little kitchenette. Close to everything really and a great hotel.

We came here as a group for business, not knowing Elvis was here. The staff and atmosphere made it a personal experience for all of us. Interesting rooms, great breakfast and helpful staff. Elvis stayed here too but even if you are not a fan, it is a unique place compared to business hotels.

This Hotel is a hidden Gem in Bad Nauheim, next to a wonderful park with many very old trees. The Hotel dated back into late 1880.It has been very carefully renovated and the original furniture is still visible. The rooms are very modern integrated in this Hotel. The Hotel serves a unbelievable breakfast either on the Terrasse with view towards the Park or inside in the antik breakfast room.Elvis Presley stayed here for 4 month and until today his room is original the way he left it.You can rent his room and sleep in the original bed.If you are an Elvis Fan,this is a must.By the way the place were the Hotel is located is “Der Elvis Presley Platz”.There is even a Elvis Presley Fan Club

As fans, it was very excited to be able to stay in the same place where the King once stayed for a couple months. Very kind staff, the room is oke though there is a wrong construction by the setting of the shower cabin's door. A person with a big belly could definitely not get in there. The breakfast was very good, banana and peanut butter were also served so you can make your own peanut butter banana sandwich. The atmoshphere was really "Elvis", his pictures are everywhere even the sign of the restroom is Elvis and Priscilla. I love the beautiful vintage "art nouveau" lift. We also had a chance to see the room no.10 where he stayed.

Elvis Lives: Bad Nauheim, Germany, Has Burning Love for the 'King'

BAD NAUHEIM, Germany — The "King" is alive —and is wandering the streets of a quaint Germany spa city.

Elvis lookalikes can be spotted buying ice-cream in Bad Nauheim, where the rock-and-roll legend spent his military years.

“I am here to party for the next three days,” said 36-year old Philipp Lieder, who dresses up as Elvis — even at work — and is a regular visitor.

Since 2002, the small city north of Frankfurt has been celebrating Elvis, his music and his time in Germany with the annual European Elvis Festival .

One tour guide described the city as "Elvis Reloaded" this year ahead of the 38th anniversary of the star's death on Sunday.

Residents and visitors are all shook up with rock and roll contests, a Cadillac old-timer tour, a "Peggy Sue" fashion show and the much-anticipated concerts of American musicians who once performed alongside Elvis.

“It is always good to be here,” guitarist James Burton, who played in the TCB band with Elvis from 1969 until 1977, told reporters Thursday. Burton was joined by pianist Glen D. Hardin and The Imperials singer Terry Blackwood, who both worked with the star during his career.

When Elvis lived in Germany between 1958 and 1960, he brought “tolerance, fairness and happiness to Bad Nauheim,” said Beatrix van Ooyen, an interior designer who moved to the small city of 30,000 some 25 years ago.

She quickly developed a “burning love” for Elvis and his connection to this rural region. Van Ooyen now heads the “Elvis in Bad Nauheim” initiative, which aims to set up a permanent Elvis museum and has launched a crowdfunding campaign for a bronze statue of the American superstar, which the city wants to place in its spa gardens.

At the height of the worldwide Elvis mania, the "King" was deployed on an 18-month stint to Ray Barracks in Friedberg, Germany with the U.S. Army’s Third Armored Division. Sergeant Elvis Aaron Presley decided to set up camp in nearby Bad Nauheim, where he rented an entire floor of the Grunewald hotel for himself and his entourage.

In commemoration of the famous visitor, the square outside the historic hotel was named Elvis-Presley-Platz, where a marble memorial was set up. Die-hard Elvis fans have turned the site into a place of pilgrimage.

“Elvis is unforgotten, he is always in my heart” said 65-year old Gabriele Trinker, who is visiting Bad Nauheim for the 5th time from Zurich, Switzerland.

Dressed in a jacket with Elvis’ picture sown on the back, Trinker stopped at the Elvis memorial to pay her respects. But for her, the entertainer’s former residence next to the city’s central park has become something of a heartbreak hotel.

“The-so called Elvis room, number ten, is closed to visitors. I have never been able to see it in all these years,” she told NBC News.

Elvis left many other traces in the city. The Stark bakery on the city's main street became famous for a chocolate cake produced for Presley’s 24th birthday. Tour guides take visitors to a nearby restaurant where Elvis’ army battalion held its Christmas party in 1959. The "King" is believed to have appeared with Priscilla in public for the first time at the city's Sportheim restaurant.

The "Burgpforte" — a historic stone gate — has become a magnet for fans over the years, after the young soldier posed in uniform in front of the arch for the cover of his song “A Big Hunk of Love.”

“Elvis was a very kind and almost soft person,” Angelika Springauf, who met Elvis in 1959, told NBC News. Then 14-years old, Springauf had regularly stood outside Elvis’ second home on Goethe Street waiting for an autograph and a rare photo with the legend.

This weekend, outdoor cafes in Bad Nauheim will be playing Elvis songs and many local stores have decorated their shop windows with Elvis paraphernalia. A plush new café called Now or Never will open for the occasion.

For local fans, it has become difficult to elude the Elvis fascination.

Gerda Ziadak, 70, flunked a school year at the age of 14 just to be close to her idol and to snatch “this one kiss on the cheek from him” — which she eventually got.

“Because I stood outside Elvis house day in and day out, I neglected school,” the lifelong fan said. “But I have no regrets at all.”
