european tour golf abu dhabi leaderboard

The 2023 Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship final leaderboard is headed by winner Victor Perez, who earned his third-career DP World Tour win at Yas Links in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Perez pulled out the one-shot win amid a crowded leaderboard, shooting 66 in the final round, including a dramatic hole-out from a bunker, to shoot 18-under 270.

Sebastian Söderberg and Min Woo Lee finished runners-up, while the ageless Padraig Harrington finished in solo fourth place.

Perez won the €1,413,350 winner's share of the $9,000,000 purse.

The European Tour has itself a monster leader board for the final round of its 2021 opener

1297928254

Rory McIlroy will start Sunday's final round at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship one stroke ahead of Tyrrell Hatton.

Andrew Redington

A leader board prominently featuring maybe three of the five top-20 players in the starting line-up— let’s say Rory McIlroy (World No. 6), Tyrrell Hatton (No. 9) and Tommy Fleetwood (No. 19)—would have been just about everyone’s dream scenario heading into the final round of the seventeenth Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship. And that is exactly what the first European Tour event of 2021 is about to provide. With the exception of Justin Thomas and Matt Fitzpatrick, both of whom missed the halfway cut, the elite has risen to the top of the original 132-man field.

“A pretty cool group to be a part of,” was Hatton’s verdict on all of the above and yes, the details are mouth-watering. With 18 holes to play over the 7,642-yard Abu Dhabi Golf Club lay-out, McIlroy leads at 13-under-par 203, after a third-round 67 that included five birdies and an eagle. Hatton’s three-putt par on the 18th saw him finish with a disappointing 71 on Saturday that has him one stroke back and, in turn, one ahead of Fleetwood. The hirsute Englishman shot a 67 that included his first dropped shot in 41 holes at the short 15th.

Which is not to say the most prominent protagonists will necessarily have things all their own way come Sunday in the desert. Led by Scotsman Marc Warren and David Lipsky of the U.S. at 10 under, as many as 13 others are within six shots of the leader. Still, it would surely come as something of a surprise if the eventual champion was not a member of the most recent European Ryder Cup side.

The highlight—and biggest break—of McIlroy’s round came at the 582-yard par-5 10th. Maybe 90 yards short of the putting surface in two shots, the Northern Irishman holed out for an unlikely 3 that was worth maybe two shots. As he was quick to admit afterwards, had his ball missed the pin it actually struck at pace, a “tricky up-and-down to save par” would have ensued.

“Today was a little better than yesterday,” said McIlroy, who has seven previous top-three finishes in this event. “It was so blustery and a type of golf I’m not used to playing here in Abu Dhabi. It’s usually not as windy, so you feel like you have a chance on every hole. But this week there has been more scrambling involved and longer putts for birdie. I thought I did well today though. And yes, the big stroke of luck on 10 really helped. I was headed over the green there. Sometimes that is the sort of thing you need to be in contention at golf tournaments. Besides, apart from that, I played well and drove the ball much better. I’m really encouraged by that.”

Less enthused was Hatton, who played 23 holes Saturday (also wrapping up a second round halted by Friday darkness) in a somewhat desultory level par.

“It was a difficult day,” he lamented. “Conditions were tough. But I’m pretty disappointed. Coming back this morning I didn’t finish off my second round too well. And nothing went my way in Round 3. I hit a couple of decent shots that ran into terrible lies in bunkers. And quite a few putts burned the edge or lipped out. I tried my best though. It was just one of those days where not much went my way. The good thing is I’m still in contention. A lot can happen in 18 holes, so hopefully things go my way tomorrow.”

1297941318

A Saturday 67 from Tommy Fleetwood leaves him two shots off Rory McIlroy's lead with 18 holes to play.

Warren Little

McIlroy was just as philosophical. Having spurned so many genuine chances to win in the past, the four-time major champion is taking nothing for granted.

“I can’t go into tomorrow thinking it’s going to be my turn,” he said. “I want to make it my turn. I have to go out there and continue to hit the ball as I did on the back nine today. If I can do that, I’ll be in with a really good chance.”

MORE: Can Tyrrell Hatton prove his 2020 success was no fluke?

Still, for all that he is well down the aforementioned leader board (T-63) after a third-round 75, European Ryder Cup skipper Padraig Harrington will surely be a happy man should the leaders perform with anything like distinction in the final round. Although all three will almost certainly retain their places in the Old World side that will tee-up at Whistling Straits later this year, Harrington will want all three to qualify as of right. And as soon as possible. Last time out in France, McIlroy, Hatton and Fleetwood, 25 percent of the home team, contributed 40 percent of the points that beat the Americans. They really are rather good.

UAE players to benefit from Challenge Tour double-header in Abu Dhabi

A kram Skaik, Director General at the Emirates Golf Federation (EGF), has hailed the importance of the partnership between the European Tour group and the EGF in helping develop local players, with the EGF set to receive 60 invites across two Challenge Tour events in Abu Dhabi this month.

UAE players are to set to go head-to-head with the game’s rising stars and DP World Tour winners, including Dubai resident Nicolas Colsaerts, when the Abu Dhabi Challenge (April 18-21) returns for its second edition next week at Al Ain, Equestrian, Shooting & Golf Club, before Saadiyat Beach Golf Club completes the double-header when hosting the UAE Challenge from April 25-28.

As part of the European Tour group’s long-term partnership with the EGF, which aims to develop golf in the UAE for at least the next decade, each tournament will allocate 30 invites to the EGF to help create playing opportunities and provide a pathway for UAE golfers.

A whole host of the UAE’s homegrown players featured across the two events last season, including the country’s No.1 amateur golfer Ahmad Skaik and his brother Mohammad.

In addition to the UAE Nationals, several UAE residents were also given the opportunity to compete, with local golf coach Louis Gaughan securing his spot by winning the Emirates PGA Championship and Joshua Grenville-Wood selected as an invitee to both tournaments, where he finished in a share of second and 18th respectively.

“This is the second year of the Challenge Tour double header in Abu Dhabi,” said Akram Skaik, Director General at the Emirates Golf Federation.

“It’s such a good opportunity for us as a federation as we get 30 invites into each event, which allows us to give our players the opportunity to play in these elite tournaments.”

As well as giving local players vital experience of playing world class tournaments in Abu Dhabi, the EGF are able to swap some of their allocation with other international federations to allow UAE players to compete in other Challenge Tour events around the world, as well as Ladies European Tour (LET) tournaments for the country’s leading female talents.

Both Ahmad Skaik and Grenville-Wood used these to their advantage last season, with Skaik competing in four further Challenge Tour events, while Grenville-Wood, who was awarded the opportunity to represent the UAE last year, played in an additional ten tournaments on the 2023 Road to Mallorca.

Before a ball has even been struck at this year’s Challenge Tour double-header in the UAE, the EGF has already been busy exchanging invites with international federations.

Grenville-Wood came close to a first win on the Challenge Tour last month at the Delhi Challenge, finishing in a share of second at Classic Golf & Country Club after the EGF traded one of their invitations with the Indian Golf Union.

“This year, we’ve exchanged spots with around seven federations across the world and we’ve also given several LET spots to our girls,” added Skaik.

“We’re using our full allocation to support our players – it’s a great opportunity for us.

“It allows players to experience different events and courses all over the world. The courses we have here in the UAE are quite open, whereas in Europe they have narrow fairways and forests around the course.

“Last year was a bit of an experimental year for us with exchanging our invites with other federations, but this year we have handpicked the events we want our players to go and play.

“I don’t think any other federation has the opportunity that we have. It’s a great initiative.”

Ahmad Skaik played in last year's Challenge de Espana after an invite swap

Tommy Fleetwood

Tommy Fleetwood: ‘Lots of us talk about LIV so I wanted to see it’

Popular English golfer explains the reason behind visiting breakaway tour which heightened speculation over his future

G olf’s rich tapestry is demonstrated by Tommy Fleetwood’s start to 2024. The Englishman opened the year by seeing off Rory McIlroy to win in dramatic circumstances in Dubai . His subsequent visit to LIV Golf’s event in Las Vegas triggered a social media frenzy, given the interest the rebel circuit has been known to have in Fleetwood in the past. Fleetwood will begin a three-week US tournament stretch – which includes the Masters – from Thursday. Thereafter, he will caddie for his stepson in a Challenge Tour competition in Abu Dhabi.

Fleetwood’s LIV stop-off was perfectly innocent. The 33‑year‑old was in Nevada visiting his coach, Butch Harmon. Still, it was notable that Fleetwood was relaxed enough in his own mind regarding speculation that he dropped by the Las Vegas Country Club.

“I really didn’t think that much about it,” Fleetwood says. “I was over there, lots of us talk about LIV but never see it so I wanted to see what a tournament was like. There are also so many people there that we don’t see any more, who I would still class as friends. Players, people who work on the tour, my trainer works there. So I had a free morning, went for a few hours and that was it.”

Tyrrell Hatton’s switch to LIV after the DP World Tour’s Middle East swing arrived at a time when the Saudi Arabian-backed league also had eyes on Fleetwood. Thus far, LIV has failed to make further inroads into the European Ryder Cup team by coaxing the charismatic Fleetwood. His appearance in Vegas, though, sent golf’s chattering classes into overdrive. The man himself shrugs and smiles about that situation.

“It was pretty obvious that would happen but it is difficult when you know there is nothing to it and a lot of people want to make something of it,” Fleetwood says. “That’s just the way things are. I didn’t want to feel like I couldn’t go just because people would say things. I think it came across that I just wanted to go and see friends and that really was the main thing. It was nice to see a lot of people.”

Fleetwood can easily handle the background noise. “I obviously know what I am doing, where I am playing. You can’t do much about what’s said elsewhere. It was the same as going to that event, I knew why I was there. I don’t find it distracting at all.”

Tommy Fleetwood plays a shot

So what was Fleetwood’s verdict? He readily admits he struggles to watch golf – “it’s pretty slow, I much prefer playing” – but was there a marked difference to the DP World Tour or PGA Tour he knows so well? “They are obviously doing pretty well for what they are,” he says. “The players seem to enjoy it, seem to enjoy playing on that tour; one of the first things I noticed was that everybody seems happy, chilled, relaxed.

“There are certain things I wasn’t used to; the music, I don’t know how I would feel about playing with that. Beyond that my biggest takeaway was that it was just another golf tournament. Everyone seemed very professional and working very hard. It’s basically just a bunch of people who you knew out here that are now there. So many things have just carried over.”

after newsletter promotion

A Fleetwood success at Augusta National would be among the most popular Masters outcomes. Since 2022, his major performances have started to trend upwards again. The Southport man should take it as a compliment that he is regarded as one of the finest talents of this generation without a major title to his name. Fleetwood’s supreme iron play and shot‑shaping ability should always work well at Augusta.

Thereafter, and following a PGA Tour stop off at Hilton Head, Fleetwood will take on a different golf role. His stepson, Oscar Craig, was victorious at the Ras Al Khaimah Men’s Open in February. Fleetwood and his family are now based in Dubai; the world No 12 has resisted temptation to make the two-hour drive with young Oscar in contention. “We were going to go at the weekend but he was doing well and I didn’t want to turn up and jinx it,” Fleetwood says. “He was there with friends. He called when he finished to say he had won, I was on the range with our other boy, Mo, and he was so chuffed. Everyone was.”

Craig has secured a spot in the Challenge Tour’s UAE Challenge at Saadiyat, where Fleetwood will assume caddying duties. “I am looking forward to it,” Fleetwood says. “I spoke to Oscar about it, I didn’t want to be a distraction to him but he wanted me to do it which is great.”
