Helga van den Bergh

The best of the best! Super friendly staff and they will go the extra mile to make the trip unique and special. Well worth the extra expense. You guys are great! Thanks so much for making a very memorable trip even more memorable!

Sarah Cowgill

I can not recommend this company enough!! Today Was AMAZEBALLS. From getting on the boat this morning to getting off, every member of staff, the thoughtfulness of the crew, lunch, locations, free brew, afternoon tea, free glass of wine! Kate the marine biologist was fantastic (the 30min tour very well worth it) ! All the divers in the water also bloody brilliant (you could get a little 5 minute tour on a little rubber ring life safer thing. And staff were more than happy to help in any way possible). Had the best day!! Thank you so much!!!

Just come back from the day trip! Really enjoyed it... everything is so well organised and staff are all really great at what they do! They’re such a good company as well in how they operate & stress-free. Really quick and great communication. Food fab too with a variety of vegetarian options, steak, fish, pasta, salads etc! Snorkelling was great!

Robert Chapman

What a great day out with a fantastic crew on a new boat with good gear and food. We had a top day with this crew, especially Shay and Isaac who were only too happy to give us advice and share their experiences. If you want a no fuss, professional day on the reef give Down Under a go

Kate Martyn

Fantastic service. The crew work well together to ensure you have a positive and enjoyable experience. They have created a positive team atmosphere, were highly organised and passenger safety was top priority ~ it was a pleasure to travel with them. The extra touches like the freshly cooked bbq lunch, the live entertainment, wine fruit and cheese on way home, the humour, the warm welcome and farwell at the end of the trip were added bonuses that made the experience all the more special for the passengers and uniquely their own. The snorkeling and experiences on offer were wonderful, and the boat Evolution, stunning and comfortable. Highly Recommend.

Linda Lamens Cheetham

Today my family traveled on the boat Endeavour, Down Under Cruise. The day started with liquid sunshine, raincoats and wet feet. We were welcomed onboard and that’s where the enthusiasm and great service started from the crew! We arrived at the reef to sunshine! The day was fantastic! The crew was able to help people with varying swimming and linguistic abilities! Then off to the next reef sight which was even better then the first! Helicopter rides, underwater viewing, scuba diving and marine guided tours were other activities one could purchase. I was really impressed with the whole day! The staff were excellent! The trip well worth the money! thanks for a great day!

Pamela Harvey

Had a fantastic time today with the wonderful crew and the memories will be last a long time it was a real bucket list event everyone on board were so helpful and made my experience all that much better would recommend this to everyone young or old

Sally Mason

our family of 5 had an amazing day on the reef tour, it was well run by helpful and friendly staff who clearly enjoy what they do and do it so well. Lunch was great, snorkelling amazing and good equipment on a beautiful new boat. Definitely recommend. Thank you.

Cairns Great Barrier Reef Snorkeling – The Evolution Reef Cruise

Evolution great barrier reef snorkeling tour Evolution great barrier reef tour Evolution reef cruise Cairns snorkeling cheap Snorkeling in cairns Best great barrier reef tours

Snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef is a bucket-list item for many travelers, and there’s no better place than Cairns to make these dreams a reality. From the Cairns Reef Fleet terminal on the Cairns Esplanade, a variety of different Great Barrier Reef snorkeling and diving tours depart every day. Depending on your budget, your comfort in the water, and how much time you want to spend snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef, there’ll be a perfect Cairns snorkeling tour for you!

The Evolution Reef Cruise is the great-value Great Barrier Reef tour we ended up choosing during our Cairns itinerary .

Evolution great barrier reef snorkeling tour Evolution great barrier reef tour Evolution reef cruise Cairns snorkeling cheap Snorkeling in cairns Best great barrier reef tours

When looking for the best Great Barrier Reef tours departing from Cairns, visitors have a handful of options to choose from:

  • Fitzroy Island or Green Island are both a stone’s throw away from Cairns. If you want to go snorkeling in Cairns but prefer not to spend all day on a boat, snorkeling ‘tours’ to these islands just drop you off at the destination so you can explore, hang out on the beach, and snorkel the waters at your own pace. These tours are the cheapest,  but don’t get you to the outer reef.
  • Pontoon Great Barrier Reef tours take visitors out to a vessel that’s permanently anchored out in the ocean near the coral reefs. The tour will drop you off at the pontoon and you’ll be able to snorkel, dive, sunbathe, and even go down waterslides while using the pontoon as your home base. These tours are the most expensive, Check prices on GetYourGuide .
  • The Evolution Great Barrier Reef snorkeling tour is a reef-hopping tour that takes visitors on a large boat to two different outer GBR sites, with lunch served on-board. Snorkeling gear is included, plus there’s plenty of room on board for sun-bathing and enjoying the view of the ocean from air-conditioned rooms! We took this trip, which cost us $195 AUD. Check out the latest prices here !

Check out the video of our Cairns and Port Douglas trip here , including some snorkeling footage!

Where to stay in Cairns?

We stayed in two different locations in Cairns, the  Hilton Cairns  and then on our way back from Port Douglas, the  DoubleTree Hilton Cairns . I loved both locations.

For snorkeling in Cairns, the  Hilton Cairns  is literally steps away from the Cairns Reef Fleet Terminal and highly recommended for its amazing views and breakfast.

See the photo below for proof of our beautiful views from the Hilton Cairns hotel!

Why we chose the Evolution Great Barrier Reef Tour

When considering which tour would be the best Great Barrier Reef snorkeling trip for us, we picked the  Evolution Reef Cruise  for a few reasons:

  • Variety of snorkeling spots – the Evolution stops at two different reefs, which is different from the pontoon or island experiences where you see only one
  • Full-day tour – we considered taking a half-day Great Barrier Reef snorkeling tour from Cape Tribulation, but for a similar price we preferred the full-day.
  • Great value – The Evolution Reef Cruise costs $195 AUD per person, which includes the $20 reef levy that all visitors have to pay to enter the Great Barrier Reef area
  • Amenities – Included in the price was snorkeling gear, wetsuits (if needed), lunch, snacks, and even sunscreen on-board
  • Add-ons – for scuba divers or those with more money to spend (helicopter tour, anyone?) the Evolution reef cruise gives you an option to stretch your budget as far as it’ll go on the Great Barrier Reef. Since we were only snorkeling, we knew we weren’t paying a premium for services we weren’t going to use.

Here’s how our full-day snorkeling tour on the Great Barrier Reef unfolded with the Evolution Reef Cruise!

7:15am – Check-in at the Cairns Reef Fleet Terminal

The main Cairns Reef Fleet Terminal is located at the end of the Cairns Esplanade, and is where check-ins take place for most Great Barrier Reef adventures.

From one of the shops here, we rented a GoPro Hero10 for the day in order to get some great footage of our snorkeling trip. For $50, the rental included the GoPro, two battery packs, and a micro SD memory card (although we used our own), plus a carrying case.

Evolution great barrier reef snorkeling tour Evolution great barrier reef tour Evolution reef cruise Cairns snorkeling cheap Snorkeling in cairns Best great barrier reef tours

7:45am – Board the Evolution boat

Upon showing our tickets to the crew on-board, we were shown to our personal table/booth for the day, where we could spread out our belongings. We were told with the many cameras in the area, that leaving our things there would be safe. The booth even had its own outlets! Note there are no lockers on board for the very cautious types.

While we waited for the other passengers to arrive, we were fitted with fins and snorkels for us to use throughout the day. After that, we sat back and enjoyed some coffee and mini-muffins for second breakfast. (Our first breakfast was from our accommodation, the beautiful  Hilton Cairns !)

8:00am – Depart on the Evolution Reef Cruise

The boat departed once everyone had boarded and the crew completed a head count. The crew gave us a safety demonstration for the first part of the 90-minute ride out to the outer Great Barrier Reef, then we were able to wander around the boat.

Evolution great barrier reef snorkeling tour Evolution great barrier reef tour Evolution reef cruise Cairns snorkeling cheap Snorkeling in cairns Best great barrier reef tours

9:30am – Arrive at snorkeling destination one – Saxon Reef

Depending on the water and wind conditions of the day, the captain makes a decision on which two reefs to visit. Our trip took us to Saxon Reef first, then to Hastings Reef.

Upon arrival to the reef we didn’t jump in right away – the crew set up the back of the boat to make it easier for snorkelers and divers to enter the water. They also draw floating ropes across the water perpendicular to the boat for us to swim between. A lookout crew member on the back of the boat lets swimmers know when they’re getting an unsafe distance away from the boat.

We snorkeled for about 1-1.5 hours before returning to the boat and finding that lunch was prepared.

Lunch on board the Evolution Reef Cruise consisted of a buffet of fish and steak, veggie patty upon request, bread, and side salads including pasta salad and potato salad. A nice hot and hearty meal after a great snorkeling session.

12:00pm – Depart for second reef

12:30pm – Hastings Reef

The second reef we snorkeled was surprisingly very different from the first, with shallow corals as far as you can see underwater. The first reef, which I actually preferred, was dotted with big coral ‘boulders’ you could swim around.

We snorkeled here for about an hour before retiring our fins for the day. Although in total we get about 5 hours of snorkeling time, passengers can decide how much or how little of that time they want to spend in the water.

14:30 – Depart Hastings Reef

We took advantage of the on-board bar on the way back, and got more than one local Hemingway brewery beers (and a Corona for me). At $7.50 AUD a can, it was surprisingly cheap. Passengers each also got a free glass of wine, which came from a bag but hey, it was free!

An underwater photographer who came with the boat also shared his photos with the passengers on several iPads on the way back, giving people a chance to purchase any or all of this underwater photos.

16:00-16:15 – Arrive back to Cairns Fleet Terminal

We arrived back to Cairns Fleet Terminal just after four, and were on our way to continue our Cairns itinerary!

Facilities on board the Evolution Reef Cruise

The triple-decker Evolution vessel had the air-conditioned booths on the bottom floor, sun decks and benches perfect for sun-tanning on the second floor, and a covered rooftop with more chairs, a few tables, and cushions perfect for enjoying the scenic views of the ocean. The boat also had 5 bathrooms, three indoor “dry” toilets and two outdoor “wet” toilets.

The kitchen on board prepared our hot lunch for us, which included steaks and fish, veggie patties (on request), and several side salads and pastas. A bar with beers and wines available for purchase was also open after 10am, only to those not planning on scuba diving later in the day. At $7.50 a beer it was a great deal!

For a pair of budget-conscious travelers, this Evolution Great Barrier Reef tour was the best cheap snorkeling option for us.

Down Under Dive provide daily Great Barrier Reef scuba diving and snorkelling tours (for more information on these activities, please see below tabs) from Cairns, aboard their brand new boat Evolution. Evolution commenced operations in December 2015 and was custom designed and built as a specialist reef day tour vessel. Equipped with the latest dive and snorkel equipment, she features three levels, with two air-conditioned interiors and three exterior sun decks.

Each day trip visits two separate reef locations, providing guests with up to five hours on the reef. Down Under Dive has 12 exclusive mooring locations and will choose the best sites on the day, to maximize your experience, pending weather and conditions. Reefs you may visit include Norman, Saxon, and Hastings reef systems.

Access to the water aboard Evolution is either giant stride entry from the side of the boat (divers) or via a submerged platform at the rear of the vessel. All equipment is provided (fins, mask and snorkel) and introductory diving is available (no experience necessary). Guests are provided with a cubby hole to place their personal possessions during the day, this is a great little feature.

Optional (extra cost) activities include semi-submersible tours, guided snorkel tours and scenic helicopter flights. Down Under Dive has an excellent BBQ lunch, which is a point of difference from other operators. Choose from a delicious selection of BBQed steaks and sausages, grilled fish, cold prawns, range of salads and bread and butter, with all of the condiments. Beverages and snacks are available for sale from the onboard bar. Live musical entertainment is provided on the way back to Cairns, as is a complimentary glass of wine, plus cheese and fruit platter.

All prices in Australian Dollars. Can't see the prices on your mobile? Click the Green Circle with the + Sign.

Check in for the Down Under Dive Cairns Great Barrier Reef day tours starts from 7.30am, inside the Cairns Reef Fleet Terminal. At check-in, you are issued with a passenger safety number. From here, it’s a short stroll down the marina to Evolution, with boarding from 8am for an 8.30am departure. Tea and coffee is provided on arrival and introductory, safety, snorkelling and dive briefings are provided during the 90-minute trip to the Great Barrier Reef.

Down Under Dive has 12 exclusive moorings at six reef locations. Where you go on the day, depends on the weather conditions and visibility, ensuring you will enjoy the very best Great Barrier Reef snorkelling that is available, each and every trip. Your first stop (generally) will be at either Norman or Saxon Reefs, situated on the Outer Great Barrier Reef. The second location is generally North Hastings Reef, where you can choose some optional extras including a helicopter flight or semi-submersible boat tour. The reef destinations have been chosen specifically for their abundance of marine life, clarity of water and bottom contours, providing the very best Outer Great Barrier Reef experience for snorkelers, introductory divers and certified divers.

You will arrive at your first reef location at around 10am, lunch is served around 12pm (while Evolution moves to its second reef location) and you commence your return journey around 3.30pm for a 5pm arrival into Cairns.

Down Under Dive (Evolution Dive & Snorkel Boat) offers up to three (3) scuba dives per day. Diving is available to certified divers (guided dives are extra $20.00 per person per dive or you can enjoy unguided dives where you can buddy up with another diver and explore the reef at your own leisure). Also, available are introductory dives (no experience necessary). All equipment is included in the dive price.

INTRODUCTORY DIVES: If you have never scuba dived before but want to give it a go, then the introductory diving is for you. No experience is necessary and all equipment and training is provided on the boat. These dives are always guided by professional dive crew and go no deeper than 10m. Introductory dives generally last around 30 minutes.

CERTIFIED DIVING: Certified divers have the chance to enjoy up to three (3) scuba dives on two Great Barrier Reef sites. Certified divers have the choice between guided (at extra cost) and unguided diving. Guided dives are $20 per person, per dive (in addition to the dive price). Unguided dives must be completed with a buddy (either your own, or if travelling solo, you will be paired up with someone else). Maximum dive time is 45-minutes with a recommended maximum depth of 16m. Using a standard day itinerary, your first dive will be at 10am, second dive at 11.30am (both at the first reef site) and final dive at 1.20pm. Divers are given the choice between lycra or wet suits and water entry is giant stride from the side of the boat. Divers share equipment and this trip is recommended for more experienced certified divers. You will be required to show your dive license and preferably your log book.

Snorkeling:

Down Under Dive visits two open water reef sites, which means they are in the ocean rather than being near an island, sand cay or pontoon. Conditions are easy for snorkelers, with the reefs being close to the boat and rising up to within a few meters of the surface. Equipment is included in the ticket price and training is provided for those who are new to the activity. If you are not confident in the water, there are free buoyancy devices available, including life jackets, and ‘pool noodles’.

I strive to make the Great Barrier Reef more resilient to heat stress

“Studying marine conservation is hard. Marine ecosystems are degrading. Coral reefs are bleaching: by 2060, without significant emissions reductions, mass coral bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef could be an annual event.

But corals can adapt to warming waters. Enhancing coral-reef heat tolerance is the subject of my research in the Reef Restoration and Adaptation Program at the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) in Townsville.

Coral bleaching occurs when the coral becomes heat-stressed and ejects or loses its coloured symbionts. Coral cannot survive without these photosynthetic microalgae, which live inside the coral tissue and provide it with sugars in return for a stable home. But some symbionts can survive without the coral — and, being microorganisms, can reproduce and evolve rapidly.

For ten years, the team at AIMS has been growing coral symbionts in the laboratory while gradually raising the heat. Each time the symbionts adapt, we push the temperature up a bit. They can now survive a constant 31 °C, a condition not experienced anywhere on the Great Barrier Reef.

In this photograph, from November 2023, I am introducing our latest heat-evolved symbionts — the brown substance inside the pipette — into the bleached corals at the bottom of the tank. Our evolved symbiont–coral pairings perform well in the aquarium. We now have a permit to start small-scale field trials out on the reef. We will measure whether these innovative host–symbiont combinations are stable and can maintain their heat tolerance after a full annual climate cycle in the wild.

Our hope is that, if the reef ever needs to be replenished, the corals we deploy will be able to withstand future heat stress, thanks to our experimentally evolved symbionts.”

A snorkeller above bleached and dead staghorn coral off Heron Island

Great Barrier Reef’s worst bleaching leaves giant coral graveyard: ‘It looks as if it has been carpet bombed’

Scientists stunned by scale of destruction after summer of storm surges, cyclones and floods

Beneath the turquoise waters off Heron Island lies a huge, brain-shaped Porites coral that, in health, would be a rude shade of purplish-brown. Today that coral outcrop, or bommie, shines snow white.

Prof Terry Hughes, a coral bleaching expert at James Cook University, estimates this living boulder is at least 300 years old.

“If that thing had eyes it could have looked up and watched Captain Cook sail past,” he says, back on the pristine beach of this speck of an island 80km offshore at the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef .

It is not just Heron’s grand old bommie that is freshly bleached. The surrounding tangle of staghorn corals, or Acropora , are splashed in swathes of white, or painted a dappled mosaic of greens and browns that betray the algae and seaweeds growing over the freshly killed coral. Hughes estimates 90% of those branching corals are dead or dying.

Terry Hughes inspects the coral around the Heron Island research station

Snorkelling above these blighted coral thickets evokes the imagery of forests annihilated by bushfires, or cities obliterated by missiles.

“It looks as if it has been carpet bombed,” says the Greens senator Peter Whish-Wilson, who has accompanied Hughes to Heron. “Like limbs strewn everywhere.”

Even Hughes, a man who has witnessed as much mass mortality of coral as any, looks shellshocked.

The Dublin-born, Townsville-based marine biologist already knew the coral ringing Heron had just experienced its worst recorded bleaching – and that this was no isolated event .

Last month the Australian Institute of Marine Science and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority released a report warning that the reef was experiencing “the highest levels of thermal stress on record”. The authority’s chief scientist, Dr Roger Beeden, spoke of extensive and uniform bleaching across the southern reefs, which had dodged the worst of much of the previous four mass bleaching events to blight the Great Barrier Reef since 2016.

Hughes saw in the institute’s aerial surveys results the most “widespread event and severe” bleaching event to date, not just in the south, but across much of the entire system – which stretches 2,300km up the Queensland coast.

But none of these metrics, it seems, could truly prepare him for the act of bearing witness to the unfolding calamity he has dedicated his life to preventing.

“It’s fucking awful,” the softly spoken scientist says, emerging from the ocean. “They said the bleaching was extensive and uniform. They didn’t say it was extensive, uniform and fucking awful.

“It’s a graveyard out there.”

Lethal hot water

The academic director of the University of Queensland research station on Heron, Dr Selina Ward, doesn’t mince words either. She describes this as “the year from hell”.

Storm surges washed away some of her favourite stands of corals, there have been outbreaks of coral-eating crown-of-thorns starfish, cyclones and floods. But these “multiple assaults” pale compared with this most “horrendous bleaching”.

The bleaching peaked in February and March. At the end of March, Ward visited 16 sites around Heron and nearby reefs, including around One Tree Island – a scientific reserve with “the maximum level of protection you can get”.

“It was terrible, the worst bleaching event I’ve ever seen,” she says. “In those 16 sites, every single one was severely bleached – and some of the corals were starting to die already.”

Her big question, though, is what is happening under the water right now.

Corals bleach when sustained exposure to warmer than average water causes them to expel the photosynthetic algae that give them colour – and from which the corals polyps obtain much of their nutrients.

A coral can die or recover from bleaching. The weeks that follow a bleaching event are a brief window in which scientists like Ward and Hughes can assess how many corals have starved without their symbiotic algae. In a few months, those newly dead corals will be covered in weed and beginning to be broken down into barren rubble piles – the time and cause of their demise will become more and more obscured.

The reef is now in that window, Ward says, where scientists can get into the water and observe the amount of bleached corals that – though left more vulnerable to disease and less fertile – might just regain colour and pull through. As well as those that will not.

But bleaching is only one coral reaction to what Hughes says is perhaps better described as a hot water event. Some corals will simply “cook”. Others turn a vivid blue or neon yellow – a garish shade our research vessel’s skipper says has been widespread on the corals around Heron.

These, though dazzling, are also disconcerting – this fluorescence is a protein corals produce as a kind of sunscreen. It is not a very effective defence though. According to Hughes, most of these neon corals won’t survive.

“The irony is that it looks beautiful in death,” Whish-Wilson says of a fluorescent coral while he and Hughes wade through knee-deep water as the tide recedes around Heron and coral tips emerge from the water like bones.

Heron Island from the air

The unseen national emergency

After the summer of 2023-24, the Great Barrier Reef is awash in cruel irony and dissonance. The first strikes the traveller to Heron as its Islander catamaran departs its berth and rounds a canal into Gladstone’s harbour.

A hulking and rusty bow is slowly revealed as a bulk carrier connected, by crane-like loaders, to great mounds of crushed black earth. Behind it, another ship is being loaded with coal. And another behind that.

Then, as the catamaran rounds Curtis Island, it ducks and weaves its way through bulk carrier after bulk carrier, lurking outside the harbour like a school of sharks at the edge of a reef. On his phone’s shipping app, Hughes lists 43 of the steel leviathans.

Bulk carriers moored offshore

Whish-Wilson says the flotilla speaks to a government having “a bet each way”.

“But you can’t have a future for fossil fuels and a future for a healthy reef,” he says. “You just can’t.”

Later, reflecting on a trip he already feels will haunt the rest of his life, the Greens healthy oceans spokesperson says this devastating bleaching should trigger Unesco to declare the Great Barrier Reef’s world heritage values as “in danger” and demand a visit from the federal environment minister, as well as a declaration of national emergency.

If this were a bushfire raging across thousands of kilometres, he says, that declaration would already have been made.

“But because it is in the ocean, it is out of mind, out of sight.”

Slim hope of recovery

Another of Heron’s incongruities is that, even amid such underwater devastation, it still harbours breathtaking beauty. Green sea turtles cruise above stands of broken coral, giant coral trout open their mouths and gills for electric blue cleaner wrasse, manta rays glide gracefully through the shallows.

Hughes first came here as a postdoctoral researcher in 1985 and has often returned. Now, as he prepares to leave Heron once more, he ponders the future of a natural wonder of the world to which he has given so much of his life.

A turtle shelters among bleached and dead staghorn coral

The 67-year-old has seen the coral ecosystems of the Great Barrier Reef degrade and knows that they are on the inexorable path of further decline. Yet, if global heating can be limited to well below 2C on pre-industrial levels , Hughes still believes it is possible to stabilise sea temperatures and allow those corals that survive to mount a slow recovery.

It is not a question of hope or resignation, he says, but “immediate action”.

Unless fossil fuel emissions are cut “ASAP”, he says, the corals of the world’s reefs will be replaced by something else, perhaps seaweed or sponges.

“There would still be a tropical ecosystem here,” Hughes says with a sweep of his hand. “But at some point we would have to say it is no longer a coral reef. We’d have to call it something else.”

So when will Hughes return to Heron to see what, if anything, recovers? Will he check on that grand old bommie, now snow white?

“I’m not sure I will come back,” he says.

Hughes, left, onboard a research station inflatable

And why not? To this, a long pause, as Hughes looks away and out at the ocean, the only sound a choked sob and the haunting wail of the black noddies that brood and swarm on this troubled coral cay.

“’Cause it’s so upsetting,” he says, eventually.

Not that Hughes plans on staying silent.

“I think scientists like me need to be as vocal as possible,” he says. “To show people what’s happening.”

Targeted culling of starfish found to help Great Barrier Reef maintain or increase cover

A team of marine biologists, conservationists and environmentalists affiliated with multiple institutions in Australia has found that controlled culling of starfish can revitalize or promote regrowth of sections of the Great Barrier Reef.

In their paper published in the open-access journal PLOS ONE , the group describes how they conducted culling operations on several parts of the Great Barrier Reef and then studied the results to learn about how such activity can benefit coral reefs in general.

Prior research has shown that coral reefs around the world are in trouble, due mostly to human activities. Warming water and an increase in acidification due to the infusion of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere are making life difficult for coral, resulting in reductions in reef size.

Another factor in their reduction is the growing population of starfish , such as the crown-of-thorns. Just one of them, a meter in diameter, can eat 10 square meters of coral every year. In this new effort, the research team focused on helping coral survive in the Great Barrier Reef by reducing the number of starfish in the area.

To reduce the number of starfish, the research team engaged in a culling effort, which meant diving down into the sea, identifying individual crown-of-thorns starfish, and injecting them with vinegar or ox bile, which killed them and also prevented them from releasing larvae—over the years 2012 to 2022. They focused the culling effort on 500 of the park's 3,000 reefs.

In monitoring the areas where culling was conducted, the researchers found that coral recovered with a 44% increase in reef coverage. They also found that in nearby parts of the reef where no culling had occurred, loss of coral continued unabated.

Additionally, the research team found that culling the starfish in specifically targeted areas dramatically reduced the spread of larvae, preventing outbreaks in other reefs.

The researchers describe their effort as similar to pest management. As human activities, such as the release of fertilizers into rivers and streams which make their way to the sea have allowed starfish populations to explode, the need has arisen to cull them.

The team suggests their test program has shown that culling of starfish can be an effective tool in helping to save the Great Barrier Reef—and other reefs around the world.
