Excursions along the north coast of Mallorca: the Tramuntana mountain range

La serra de tramuntana, the most natural and wild face of mallorca.

The Serra de Tramuntana is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the category of cultural landscape and is one of Mallorca’s greatest natural treasures.

It stretches along the north-western part of Mallorca and is approximately 90 kilometres long.

It is considered to be the backbone of the island.

It stretches from Pollença, in the extreme north, to Andratx, in the extreme south, and occupies 30 percent of the island’s territory.

The Serra de Tramuntana is a clear example of an exchange of knowledge between different cultures.

In its mountains, Islamic and western cultures have coexisted for centuries, and there are still ancient irrigation systems and dry stone terraces built to cultivate agricultural products in a difficult environment.

The Serra de Tramuntana has two water reservoirs, Gorg Blau and Cúber, and the highest mountain in the Balearic Islands, Puig Major, 1,445 metres high.

Other higher mountains are Teix, Puig Tomir and Massanella.

Special mention should be made of the Biniaraix ravine which is a marvellous area to discover on an excursion that will take you to the foot of l’Ofre.

The Biniaraix ravine runs along a stone path where the hiker will be amazed by the architecture and the landscape that runs between centenary olive trees.

La Serra de Tramuntana on foot

Discovering the Serra de Tramuntana is one of the essential activities if the traveller wants to savour the authenticity of the island.

One way to do this is to it walking.

There are different routes with different levels of difficulty, depending on the hiker’s experience.

The Dry-stone Route is an 8-stage route that runs from north to south along the Tramuntana.

Here you have the opportunity to discover another side of Mallorca and to pass through old paths and typical stone buildings set in olive groves.

Another great attraction is , precisely, the enormous and robust olive trees that are hundreds of years old and have an incalculable historical and cultural value for the island .

La Serra de Tramuntana, by car

excursion tramuntana mallorca

Another way to explore the Serra de Tramuntana is by car.

The most beautiful and picturesque villages of the island are located on the north coast of Mallorca ; villages rich in history and tradition that still seem rooted in the past .

Most of these villages have the Tramuntana mountains on one side and the spectacular blue Mediterranean sea on the other, creating a breath-taking backdrop . Sóller, Fornalutx, Deià, Valldemossa and Banyalbufar are towns located in the heart of the Tramuntana mountain range that you cannot miss if you are visiting Mallorca.

Y ou can also reach the Lluc sanctuary by car , which, nestled in the heart of the Tramuntana, is full of a marvellous energy.

La Serra de Tramuntana, by bicycle

The Serra de Tramuntana is the favourite place for the thousands of cyclists who, year after year, visit Mallorca to cycle around the Island.

The most popular areas among cyclists are Formentor road ( which runs between the sea, the mountains and extraordinary vegetation ) and Sa Calobra road, where we find the world-famous section of “el nudo de la corbata” (the tie – knot) – one of the tightest bends in the world.

B oth routes lead to beautiful beaches: Formentor and Sa Calobra and the Torrent de Pareis, where people can refresh themselves by swimming in crystalline waters or drinking in the beautiful scenery .

Doing any of the numerous routes that can be done through the Serra de Tramuntana by bicycle is one of the biggest attractions for tourists who visit Mallorca, either as a couple, with friends, individually or with the family.

However, it should not be forgotten that many of the routes require a good level of preparation due to the uneven terrain on some of them.

WALKING TOUR IN VALLDEMOSSA AND SOLLER

What to do in valldemossa.

Valldemossa is probably one of the most beautiful villages in Mallorca. The name “Valldemossa” comes from Wadi Musa (the Musa’s valley) who was the lord of this lands. In 902 the Muslims conquered the island and they organised it in 13 “juz” (districts). This one was known as Bunyula-Musu.

It was an “alquería” (farm, farmstead) and the mosque was built where nowadays there’s the parish church of Sant Bartomeu. That area was the beginning of Valldemossa. Around there, there were a lot of fountains that helped to the agriculture, the economy of the village.

It is currently considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 2011. A village surrounded by olive, almond and carob trees where you can find the painted ceramics in all the houses that represent episodes in the life of Santa Catalina with the quote: “Pray for us”; or taste the delicious “ coca de patata ” made of flour, boiled potato, sugar, lard, eggs, oil and lukewarm water… A simple recipe passed down from generation to generation that, over time, has become one of Valldemossa’s great gastronomic features.  A lot of the shops in the town sell this genuinely local sweet. Try it with hot chocolate in winter or an almond slush in summer.

THE CARTHUSIAN MONASTERY OF VALLDEMOSSA:

It would be difficult to truly understand Valldemossa without realising the part played by La Cartoixa in its history.

The two properties that make this spectacular village are the Palace of King Sanç and the new Carthusian monastery. They have welcomed kings, writers, artists, politicians and, more simply, Carthusian monks, whose order was responsible for the buildings current appearance.

In 1229, King Jaume I of Aragon, known as the Conqueror, arrived in Mallorca. His son, Jaume II, was the first king of the kingdom of Mallorca. He ruled a realm that was not dependent on the Crown of Aragon, the dominant kingdom in the area during this time.

Jaume II had a son who suffered from asthma, Sanç I. In 1309, in an attempt to help his son, Jaume II ordered a palace to be built for Sanç in Valldemossa, it was believed the local climate could relieve his asthma. The manor built where probably was located the Muslim lord house.

The palace was enlarged in 1311 by Sanç I, who spent a long time here due to his asthma, since then it was known as the Palace of King Sanç I. For several years this palace was used as a royal residence; in other words, the home of the kings of Mallorca. However, the kingdom of Mallorca didn’t last long and, in 1349, it definitively joined the realm of the Crown of Aragon.

As there were no longer any Mallorcan kings, the palace built by Jaume II was never used again as a home for royals. So, in 1399 Martin I, the last King of the Jaume’s dynasty died childlessly, so he decided to donate the building to some monks so they could use the old palace by converting it into a monastery.

These monks were Carthusians . After some time, during which the monks made changes to be able to live in the old palace, for instance: the prison became the refectory or dining room; the kitchen, the church; the weapons square, the cemetery, cloister and more. Between the 16th and 17th Century, the new cloister of Santa Maria, some cells, the chapter hall and the rooms for relatives built.

The Carthusian Order had lived in the monastery for 400 years, until 1835. In 1835, due to the ecclesiastical confiscations , the Spanish government forcibly took the Charterhouse of Valldemossa from the Carthusian monks and sold it in public auctions to some people. The Cartuja was sold to a banker, Eliseu Canut, except the church, chapter hall, sacristy/vestry and apothecary which became bishop properties. Then the residential Cartuja was born and the cells were rented to visitors. That was the third transformation for the monastery as several people bought different parts to make them their home. Imagine the luxury of being able to live in such a beautiful place as the Carthusian Monastery of Valldemossa! During this time a lot of artists and writers stayed here: George Sand and Chopin, Rubén Darío,

Things to do in Sóller

Things to see in deià.

Deià is one of the most charming corners of Mallorca thanks to its bohemian and picturesque image. The town is at the foot of a slope, with houses agglomerated and giving a stunning view of the Mediterranean.

This paradise combines its natural beauty and social harmony with other earthly pleasures. This beautiful town has not gone unnoticed by artists, writers and creatives who have decided to stay in Deià and look for its source of inspiration there. We suggest you discover the archaeological museum, the parish museum or the municipal cemetery that is behind the church.

His first mentions date from the 17th century. There are the tombs of the different personalities and artists who have died in Deià, such as those of the English writer and poet Robert Graves . A visit to the Archaeological Museum of Deià is like travelling to the origins of modern archaeology in Mallorca and discovering the beginnings of the occupation of Mallorca. There are remains from the archaeological sites that William Waldren excavated from the late 1950s onwards when he came to the island from the USA.

Another option is to go to the Torre de Sa Pedrissa . It is an old watchtower built to defend the coastline against the attacks of Berber and Ottoman pirates. From the tower, we can see an unusual view of Na Foradada . To access the Tower we must deviate to the left before reaching the cove, later we arrive at urbanisation until you reach a barrier. On the right bank, there is a path that leads us in 10 minutes to the tower.

VALLDEMOSSA

Valldemossa.

Valldemossa is probably one of the most beautiful villages in Mallorca.

A charming village surrounded by olive, almond and carob trees where you can find the ceramics of Santa Catalina Tomàs in all the houses and shops, taste the Coca de Patata and visit the Carthusian monastery of Valldemossa, its most emblematic building.

It is one of the most picturesque towns in the Serra de Tramuntana. It is famous for its oranges and is therefore known as the "Valley of Oranges".

With its bohemian and picturesque image, it is one of the most charming places in Mallorca.

The village is located at the foot of a hillside overlooking the sea. This beautiful town has not gone unnoticed by artists, writers and creatives who have decided to stay in Deià and look for their source of inspiration there.

Fornalutx was the first Mallorcan village to be included in the list of Pueblos Bonitos de España .

This small rural town in the Serra de Tramuntana is an essential stop for mountain and nature lovers.

PHOTO GALLERY

This full-day excursion starts in Palma from where we will head towards Valldemossa , where we will be able to contemplate the marvellous nature that the Serra de Tramuntana offers. Once there, we will take a pleasant stroll through its cobbled streets and alleys and visit the parish church of Sant Bartomeu and the birthplace of Santa Catalina Thomàs.

The entire village is dedicated to this Mallorcan saint and on the doorways of all the houses and businesses you can find ceramics with scenes from the life of Santa Catalina.

If you are interested, you can also visit the monastery of the C arthusian monastery of Valldemossa and enjoy a piano concert. This building, created in the 14th century as a royal palace, is one of the most emblematic buildings in the municipality of Valldemossa. In the 15th century, it was donated to the Carthusian monks and began to function as the Carthusian Monastery. Finally, in the 19th century, due to the confiscations of Mendizábal, part of the monastery was sold to private hands. It was at this time that the cells were opened to new guests: artists of all kinds from all over the world, including Fréderic Chopin , stayed in this building that was so important to the life of the people of Valldemossa.

We cannot leave Valldemossa without having tasted a delicious Coca de Patata .

Then we will continue to  Sóller , however, during the tour, we will stop at one of the most stunning viewpoints of the island (and one of the most romantic places during the sunset): Na Foradada.

When we arrive in Sóller we will take a short walk around the village. Compared to the villages of Mallorca and those of the Serra de Tramuntana in particular, this municipality is totally different due to its great isolation until the 20th century. With many connections and influences from France, its architecture is unique in the area: modernist architecture with <em>art nouveau</em> influences.

The façade of the parish church of Sant Bartomeu and the Banc de Sóller are twins and the work of Joan Rubió i Bellver, one of Antoni Gaudí’s disciples.

We will also see the oldest train and tram in Mallorca. The Sóller train was inaugurated in 1912 and thanks to it the isolation of the people of Sóller came to an end.

Before heading towards the port, we can stroll along the main street, <em>Carrer Lluna</em>, and taste the juice, sorbet or ice cream made from the famous Sóller oranges.

Finally, we will go to the port of Sóller to finish the visit and have lunch in a cosy restaurant overlooking the sea.

Valldemossa is one of the most charming places in Mallorca. Village located in the middle of Serra de Tramuntana and approx. 30 min away from Palma de Mallorca is always a top place to visit. We recommend the visit in Cartuja Monastery, Chopin Museum, try local specialities like Coca de Patatas and walk around lovely streets full of flowers and welcoming smiling locals.

View of Valldemosa

Not so far away from Valldemossa you can visit incredibly beautiful town of Deia. Hometown in Mallorca of famous Rober Graves and lovely spot to visit in Serra de Tramunatana Mountains. Deia is a perfect spot for those travellers, who are looking for peace, harmony and some artistic inspiration during the holidays.

If the idea of fragrant olive groves, sweeping vistas of the Mediterranean Sea, and the savory delights of Empanadas Mallorquinas piques your holiday senses, then the ‘Trans Tramuntana’ hiking expedition in northern Mallorca is your perfect escape. This well-marked trail offers a serene journey through the largest Balearic Island’s lesser-known side, where untamed landscapes of grass and rock await your exploration. Along the way, you’ll follow ancient pilgrimage routes, revealing a Mallorca you may never have known existed.

Exploring the Trans Tramuntana in Mallorca

The Serra de Tramuntana, nestled in the northwest of Mallorca, is both the path and the ultimate destination of this hiking adventure. This mountain range boasts enchanting trails meandering through pristine landscapes and unspoiled nature. What sets this week-long journey apart are the diverse hiking experiences it offers—sometimes along the rugged coastline, other times through the rugged inland terrain. Each new day of hiking unveils a different facet of Mallorca’s hidden beauty.

Highlights of the Mallorca Hiking Expedition:

Mallorca’s Pilgrimage Routes: Traverse magnificent pilgrimage paths between Pollença and Lluc, winding through holm oak forests and picturesque orchards. The culmination of these routes is the historic Lluc Monastery, where you can even spend a night in its timeless ambiance.

A Journey by Vintage Train: Conclude your Mallorca hiking week with a memorable ride on the ‘Red Lightning,’ a vintage train that takes you from Pt. Sóller to Palma—a delightful inclusion in your hiking holiday!

Idyllic Landscapes: Discover the unspoiled beauty of the Serra de Tramuntana, which showcases a whole new dimension of the Balearic Island, far from the well-trodden tourist paths.

Essential Details for Your Hiking Trip in Northern Mallorca

Your adventure in the Serra de Tramuntana begins on the Alcúdia peninsula, specifically in Port de Alcúdia. Your inaugural coastal hike treats you to breathtaking sea views along the peninsula’s scenic coast. Over the following days, you’ll gradually acquaint yourself with the peaceful and secluded Mallorca, culminating in the vibrant atmosphere of the island’s capital, Playa de Palma. These mountain hikes typically span between ten and 15 kilometers, demanding both sure-footedness and stamina, as the trails can be quite rocky.

*This tour is based on a minimum of two participants. Only the services mentioned above are included in the price.

Want to see the next total solar eclipse in 2026? An expert recommends booking travel now.

  • 2026 will be Europe's first total solar eclipse in 27 years.
  • Travelers worldwide will likely head to Spain, Iceland, and Greenland for the event.
  • A hotel expert encouraged travelers to start planning and booking their trips now.

Insider Today

It'll be two decades before the next total solar eclipse hits the US .

Another option: hop on a plane to Europe and turn the 2026 total solar eclipse into a viewing vacation.

Eclipse cartographer Michael Zeiler at GreatAmericanEclipse.com told Space.com that up to 3.7 million people likely traveled for the solar eclipse on Monday.

HotelPlanner's chief communication officer, Philip Ballard, told Business Insider that the eclipse was a major revenue generator for many cities. For places like Austin, Texas, and Rochester, New York, it could have created $1 billion in revenue, Vox reported.

"I would say the total solar eclipse has become a global phenomenon," Ballard said.

Ballard added that the next solar eclipse , which will pass through Iceland, Greenland, and Spain on August 12, 2026, could result in similar tourism and revenue influxes.

And if travelers are considering a trip to Europe for the solar eclipse, Ballard recommends planning your trip now.

Determine your eclipse viewing destination

According to Space.com , 2026 will be Europe's first total solar eclipse in 27 years. Its path will go through Greenland, parts of western Iceland, and northern Spain.

Choosing where to watch the eclipse will be a tough and important decision for travelers.

Iceland and Greenland have some positives. These regions will experience longer totality times, so viewers can watch the eclipse longer. Plus, the sun will be higher in the sky, so finding a spot to watch the eclipse will be less challenging, Space.com reported.

The downside is that these regions are more likely to be cloudy, according to the outlet.

Related stories

While parts of Spain are likely to offer clearer skies, the eclipse's timing will be shorter and closer to the horizon, which means travelers will need to plan and track down a viewing location with unobstructed views of the western horizon, Space.com reported.

Regardless of the destination, according to the outlet, one bonus is that the strongest meteor shower in the Northern Hemisphere will happen the following night, so travelers can pack two events into one trip.

Book flights and hotels far in advance

Ballard encouraged people to book their hotels in their destination of choice as far in advance as possible.

"You should start looking now and booking hotels now because those cities in the path are already going to be at peak season," Ballard said.

Ballard said it's similar to when a Super Bowl city is determined or a Taylor Swift tour date is announced — you immediately see spikes in bookings. He predicts hotel occupancy rates will hit near-record highs, and room prices may double around the solar eclipse date.

Ballard's general rule of thumb is to book international travel at least three months in advance, but since this is such an anticipated event, booking earlier is smart. His advice is to start discussing plans with friends and family. If you decide on a destination, book a refundable room to keep your options open if plans change.

Regarding purchasing a plane ticket, a study from Expedia states that international travel's sweet spot is at least six months in advance.

According to Expedia, travelers who book six months in advance save an average of 10% more than travelers booking within two months or less.

Skip the hassle of planning altogether and book a solar eclipse tour

Another option is to let a tour operator do the work for you. A handful of tour companies have seen the increased interest in the solar eclipse and launched tours designed around the event.

These tours will have predetermined locations to view the eclipse, hotel blocks reserved, and itineraries highlighting both the region and the eclipse.

However, these can sell out quickly. For example, Space and Telescope created an 11-day tour of Spain around viewing the 2026 solar eclipse. The tour has already sold out as of Wednesday, and the waitlist is full.

Other operators, such as Wilderness Travel and Eclipse Traveler, have similar itineraries for the total eclipse in 2026.
