Some of the highlights of Sapa trekking tours are Fansipan, the highest mountain in Indochina, Muong Hoa Valley, the largest rice terrace in Vietnam, and Cat Cat Village, a charming H'mong settlement. Sapa is a destination that will amaze you with its diversity and charm.

Hue in 2024 promises a treasure trove of experiences for the curious traveler. Steep yourself in history at the Hue Citadel, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time of year to visit vietnam.

The best time to visit Vietnam depends on your preferences and the regions you plan to visit, as the weather can vary quite a bit across this long country. Here are some insights on the most recommended times for different areas:

  • Northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Halong Bay, Sapa): The dry and cooler months of November to April are generally considered the best, when skies are clear and temperatures are comfortable (60s-70s°F). Summer months can be extremely hot and humid.
  • Central Vietnam (Hue, Danang, Hoi An): The drier months between February and July offer the most ideal beach weather along the central coast. Temperatures are warm but not oppressively hot.
  • Southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta): The drier season runs from November to April/May, avoiding the heavy rains of the summer monsoon season. Temperatures are hot year-round but more manageable in the "winter" months.

In general, the spring (February to April) is one of the best times to visit much of Vietnam, when days are sunny, dry and warm across most regions. The fall (September to November) can also be an excellent shoulder season.

Keep in mind Vietnam's diverse topography means mountain areas like Sapa will be quite cool in winter, while coastal areas have a more tropical climate year-round. Planning around festivals like Tet can also impact timing.

What are the typical costs associated with a trip to Vietnam?

The typical costs for a trip to Vietnam can vary depending on your travel style, but overall it is considered a relatively affordable destination. Here are some estimates for common expenses (The pricing information provided is based on the latest data available in 2024):

Accommodation:

  • Budget hotel/hostel: $15-25 per night
  • Mid-range hotel: $30-70 per night
  • High-end resort: $100+ per night
  • Street food meals: $1-5
  • Inexpensive restaurant meal: $5-10
  • Mid-range restaurant meal: $15-55

Transportation:

  • Taxi ride in cities: $3-10 for short rides
  • Rental motorbike: $10-25 per day
  • Domestic flights: $80-250 for mid-range routes
  • Open tour bus: $10-20 per route

Entrance fee:

  • Major sights like Temple of Literature-National University: 70,000 VND/visit/person; Ngoc Son Temple: 50,000 VND/visit/person; Hoa Lo Prison Historical Site: 50,000 VND/visit/person; Thang Long Imperial Citadel Center: 100,000 VND/visit/person;
  • Museums and Temples: $2-30 / entry
  • Guided city tours: $50-120 for a day tour (tipping not included)

So, some example daily budgets:

  • Backpacker: $20-35 per day
  • Mid-range: $60-150 per day
  • Luxury: $200+ per day

Additional costs to factor in are adventure activities like hiking, visas if required, travel insurance, and shopping/souvenirs. Overall, you can travel very economically in Vietnam, especially by eating street food, using public transport, and staying in budget hotels.

What are some off-the-beaten-path destinations in Vietnam?

Vietnam has plenty of amazing off-the-beaten-path destinations that offer a more authentic, untouristy experience. Here are some lesser-visited gems to consider:

  • Ha Giang Province (Far North) This remote mountainous region near the Chinese border has stunning karst landscapes, traditional minority villages, and incredible motorbike routes like the Hapkhanh Loop.
  • Cao Bang is another northern province with beautiful mountains and lakes. It's also home to the Ban Gioc Waterfall, the largest waterfall in Southeast Asia.
  • Ninh Binh (South of Hanoi) While overlooked by many, Ninh Binh's landscape of limestone karsts, boat-filled waterways and temples rivals that of more famous Halong Bay.
  • Pu Luong Nature Reserve is a protected area in northwest Vietnam with lush forests, mountains, and rice terraces. You can go hiking, biking, or kayaking in the reserve.
  • Mu Cang Chai (Northwest) This rural district is home to breathtaking terraced rice fields carved into the mountains by the H'Mong minority people.
  • Ly Son Island (Off South Central Coast) A tranquil volcanic island with colorful houses, garlic fields, and pristine beaches that make a unique getaway.
  • Ba Be National Park (Northeast) Vietnam's largest protected area has serene lakes, waterfalls, cave systems and minority villages to explore amid dense forests.
  • Phong Nha is a national park in central Vietnam with stunning caves, including Phong Nha Cave, one of the largest caves in the world. You can go spelunking, hiking, or boating in the park.
  • Mui Ne (South Coast) A lower-key beach town with great kitesurfing, sand dunes, and nearby Phan Thiet's fish sauce-making villages.
  • Con Dao Islands (Off South Coast) This former prison island archipelago is now a national park with preserved nature, diving spots and colonial buildings.

While harder to access, these destinations provide rewarding cultural interactions, gorgeous scenery and a low-impact, crowd-free experience compared to Vietnam's mega-tourism hubs.

Take a dreamy Halong Bay cruise

Board a traditional Vietnamese junk boat and cruise the emerald waters and limestone karsts of Halong Bay. We’ll visit Tien Ong Cave and Cua Van Fishing Village, enjoy a swim at one of the golden beaches, then watch a cooking demonstration and the dazzling sunset on the boat, where we’ll sleep for the night.

Enjoy a Water Puppet performance in a local theater

The Water Puppet performance is a northern Vietnamese art form, which paints the story of rural life in Vietnam a thousand years ago. The puppeteers stand in waist-high water to represent flooded rice fields and you’ll be swept up in the legends they tell through their dancing puppets.

Visit Cua Van Fishing Village

We’ll visit the ancient Cua Van Fishing Village on our Halong Bay cruise, and stop to meet the locals who live in the traditional floating houses. It’s the largest fishing village in Halong Bay, with around 180 floating houses set on gentle waters surrounded by beautiful limestone mountains.

Help local farmers in Thanh Dong Organic Village

Our Local Specialists will take you to Thanh Dong Organic Village in Hoi An, where you’ll meet the local farmers and spend time learning about their daily working routines. You’ll also get to help the farmers in the garden and discover their unique methods that leave a positive impact on their environment.

Visit the UNESCO-listed Imperial Citadel in Hue

Jump on the back of a cyclo and take a journey to the Imperial Citadel in Hue, the former capital and home of the Nguyen emperors. You can enter the large square fortress and explore the ancient palaces and temples, and we’ll even take you inside the Purple Forbidden City.

Our top 5 things to do in Vietnam

Our Vietnam vacation packages reveal the magic of the country, from the magnificent Halong Bay and the ancient citadel of Hue, to the local farmers in Hoi An.

Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum

Located in Ba Dinh Square in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is the final resting place of President Ho Chi Minh, the iconic Vietnamese Revolutionary leader. Known to his people as ‘Uncle Ho’, his body is preserved in a glass case and protected by a military honor guard.

Temple of Literature

One of Hanoi’s most beautiful sites, the Temple of Literature is an ancient complex built in 1070 and dedicated to Confucius and scholars. It’s also home to the Imperial Academy, Vietnam’s first university and you can see the historic pavilions, turtle steles, courtyards, a lake of literature and the Well of Heavenly Clarity.

My Son Temples

The My Son Temples are a complex of ancient Hindu temples, built between the 4th and 14th century to worship the god Shiva. It was once the site of royal religious ceremonies and the burial place for Cham royalty, and today you can explore the ruins of this UNESCO-listed site.

Best museums in Vietnam

Our Vietnam escorted tours will reveal the country’s best museums, from the ancient My Son Temples to the resting place of President Ho Chi Minh.

One of Vietnam’s most famous dishes, pho is a noodle soup that’s loved all over the world. It’s made from a slow-stewed beef broth poured over rice noodles, and topped with slices of chicken or beef. You can also add a variety of herbs, sauces and chilli to your tastes.

Also known as rice paper spring rolls, goi cuon are light and fresh rolls with plenty of flavor. A rice paper wrapping is filled with bean sprouts, lettuce, meat or tofu and other crunchy vegetables. It’s best served with a sweet or spicy sauce for dipping.

Banh xeo is a thin crepe filled with shrimp, pork, bean sprouts and fresh herbs. It’s a classic northern Vietnamese dish with French influences, and the best way to eat it is cut it up in bite-sized pieces, roll it up in lettuce leaves and dunk it into the zesty side sauces.

Geography and environment during Vietnam tour packages

If you're looking for a fantastic vacation destination in Southeast Asia, Vietnam should be at the top of your list. With its stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage, Vietnam tour packages have something to offer every traveler. Vietnam, which occupies a long and narrow section of the Indochina peninsula, borders China, Laos, and Cambodia. Mountains can be found throughout most of Vietnam, particularly in the North and Central Highlands. The majority of the people in Vietnam live in low-lying areas with easy infrastructure and public and fertile agricultural land. Vietnam frequently experiences flooding because of the Mekong, one of the world's 12 major rivers. The Mekong Delta and nearby areas have experienced less flooding thanks to the canal and dike system's ability to distribute floodwater.

Vietnam History - Vietnam tour packages

Early History

The area that is now Vietnam has been inhabited since the beginning of time. According to archaeological discoveries, organized communities started to emerge as early as the first millennium BC. Up until the Chinese invasion in 111 BC, which caused the societies of Vietnam and China to converge, early society was mostly focused on agriculture and feudalism, with numerous dynasties ruling over different regions of Vietnam. For hundreds of years, the region was ruled by various Chinese dynasties, but in 905, the Vietnamese gained independence as a result of uprisings. Vietnam entered an era of independence in 938, marking the end of this period of Chinese imperial rule.

Recent History

French colonialists who took over Vietnam following the Sino-French War of 1884 and 1885 had an influence on it during the 19th century. Parts of Vietnam were included in French Indochina and Cambodia, and Laos which was created in 1887. First, after Vietnamese troops beat French forces in the Indochina War in 1954, the French were finally forced to give up control of the internal independence movements they had long sought to stifle. Vietnam was split up after this conflict, with separate governments in the north (headed by Ho Chi Minh) and the south (led by Ngo Dinh Diem, with American support).

The second Indochina War caused widespread destruction and upheaval for the Vietnamese people, and as a result, a large number of individuals left Vietnam in search of sanctuary in other parts of the world. Vietnam's economy had almost completely collapsed by the 1980s, which prompted additional waves of emigration from Vietnam. Vietnam has lately profited from the free economy that was established in 1986. Vietnam's economy is still growing, with agricultural and manufacturing serving as the foundation and the tour operators also making a contribution. Despite the fact that many Vietnamese people are living in poverty, literacy rates have increased significantly.

While Vietnam's history has been marked by conflict and hardship, the country has made significant strides in recent years towards economic growth and development. With a booming tourism industry and a wide range of Vietnam tour packages to choose from, travelers from all over the world are discovering the beauty and charm of this Indochina gem.

Shopping in Vietnam - Vietnam tour packages

Vietnamese markets and small businesses are a good mix of the intriguing; the finest choices include handicrafts, art, and and clothing, which can be explored through Vietnam tour packages.

To be sure that you can carry particular things back into your place of origin, it is a good idea to verify with your local customs officers. In general, quarantine regulations in Australia and New Zealand are strict.

Vietnam souvernirs for Vietnam tour packages

1. Tailored Clothing

One of the best places on the planet to find high-quality custom apparel is Hoi An. Locate a tailor, select your fabrics, get fitted, then come back later to pick up your bespoke clothing.

2. Hilltribe Handicrafts

Some of the hill tribes during the Vietnam tour produce great woven jewelry, apparel, and bags that make thoughtful gifts for family and friends back home.

Vietnamese coffee is among the greatest in the world, and it comes from one of the biggest exporters in the world. Why not bring a little bit of Vietnam's tour home with you if you are a coffee habitué?

4. Lacquerware

Vietnamese lacquer art is created through a labor-intensive, lengthy process that yields a stunning, smooth, and polished finish that covers everything from bowls to jewelry boxes and paintings. Although those are not the low-priced keepsakes, genuine lacquer work is pricey but worth while during Vietnam tour packages.

Places to visit in Vietnam tour packages

Halong Bay in the early morning is unlike anything else. Hundreds of enormous karst structures may be seen rising above the boat as the mists dissipate. It feels like you are waking up in a watercolor painting of a mystical place in the beautiful morning light. One of the best ways to experience the beauty of Halong Bay in Vietnam is through well-designed Vietnam vacation packages that cater to your interests and preferences.

When visiting the capital of Vietnam through Vietnam tour packages, Hanoi, the phrase "motorcycle" comes up frequently. It's insane and chaotic, but it manages to work. It is preferable to take in this exotic vista from a rooftop cafe. Watch the uproar below as you place another coffee order.

The Mekong Delta is a must see attraction in Vietnam tour packages. Some of the friendliest people on earth reside in this wide region of floating marketplaces, emerald rice paddies, and verdant islands. For a first-hand view of life in the Delta and to get to know your neighbors, set sail for one of the sleeping islands.

Vietnam vacation packages offer an excellent opportunity to explore the vibrant villages of Vietnam's minority groups such as the Zay and the Blue and Black H'mong, amid the highlands. Due to the area's isolation, an overnight hike where you stay with a local family is a great way to explore it.

Quy Nhon is a charming seaside off the major tourist route. Even a driving trip here is worthwhile. Islands, lagoons, and dunes gradually give way to paddy fields and large plantations as the route follows rocky slopes plunging into the South China Sea. A place worth going when thinking about a Vietnam tour package.

Hue is a city for heritage aficionados since it is crammed with imperial monuments. Prior to channeling your internal emperor and having a dragonboat journey down the Perfume River, discover the Citadel and its abandoned Forbidden Purple City.

Boot manufacturers, tailors, and artisans call this shopping heaven home more than you could possibly visit in a lifetime. Hire a bicycle and tour the Old Town while you wait for your suit to be constructed; the streets are gloriously car-free.

Most people still refer to HCMC as Saigon, and it is a busy metropolis. It moves quickly, is thrilling, and has wonderful sights. Skyscrapers, cathedrals, and markets all coexist in a heady mingling of traditional, colonial, and modern architecture.

The hustle and bustle of Hanoi seems a million miles away in Mai Chau. The tranquil atmosphere is aided by misty mountains and verdant rice fields. Be sure to keep an eye out for the traditional textiles produced by the local White Thai population during Vietnam tour packages.

Known as the "honeymoon capital" of Vietnam, is perpetually the must-going place in the spring. Discover the bizarre local artists, take in the French-inspired ambiance, and explore the nearby lakes, waterfalls, and forests. Fantastic!

Vietnam tour packages - Vietnam Culture and Custom

The Chinese, Khmer, French, and American civilizations have all had a different impact on Vietnam's ancient culture over hundreds of years, which may be centuries old. Whether they hail from remote villages or live in bustling metropolises, family and community connections are important to the majority of Vietnamese people. The majority of festivals and holidays are spent with the extended family, where rituals are performed, special foods are enjoyed, symbolic presents are exchanged, and ancestors are honored. Although there are certainly a lot of Catholics in Vietnam, the majority of Vietnamese practice a fascinating blend of Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism. When the Vietnam War brought hardships in the 1960s and 1970s, the majority of Vietnamese people desired to integrate into society, live optimistically and modestly. Let's experience the rich cultural heritage of Vietnam through its festivals, rituals, and special foods with the help of Vietnam tour packages.

Vietnam - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Farmers grow rice during the monsoon season in Vietnam

Beautiful, serene, and enchanting is how every trip to Vietnam feels. Fly into Hanoi to start your Vietnam explorations in the north and adjust yourself to the local culture.  For something entirely unique, hire an open-sided river boat and drift along the Mekong River to enjoy some of the most spectacular views of the country that you’ll ever see. Holidaying in Vietnam is a constant bombardment on your senses. There are times when it feels downright ridiculous, but there are also times when it leaves you mesmerized.

Tour Highlights

  • Explore the Temple of Literature in Hanoi
  • Cruise down the Mekong Delta
  • Climb the Marble Mountains
  • Witness the art and architecture of Khai Dinh Tomb
  • Take a boat tour along the Ngo Dong River to Tam Coc
  • Visit the Thien Mu Pagoda
  • Visit the amazing rice terraces in Sapa

Travel Tips

  • Vietnam is a very safe country, but be wary of petty crime. Passerbys on motorbikes may try to steal your bags, and theft on sleeper buses is common. Do not carry valuable items and keep a secure hold of your cameras and cellphones.
  • Be sure to haggle whenever visiting markets or buying from street vendors. Try to figure out what the going rate really is, as vendors will always inflate their prices if they think they can get away with it. Pro tip: you’ll always get your lowest price as you walk away.
  • The Vietnamese consider public displays of anger to be very embarrassing. Try not to raise your voice, cross your arms, or lose your temper.
  • Wi-Fi is very common in Vietnam, and is often free in hotels, hostels, cafes and restaurants.
  • The food you will eat in Vietnam will depend heavily on what area of the country you visit. Central Vietnam is full of spicy foods, while they love sugar in the South. Food in the North tends to be seasonal. Be sure to try Bún Chả and Pho (pronounced Fuh).

Vietnam has seasonal weather so please do check up on best time to visit Vietnam before planning your tour.

Tours in Vietnam - Questions and Answers

The best time to visit Vietnam is from December through March, since temperatures are not overbearing during this time of year, hovering between 20°C to 26°C, and the rainfall light. Vietnam’s weather during March and even early April allows for tours right across the country, although it can be a little colder in the north. Mid-April through June and September to November are considered low seasons because they see two periods of monsoon rain. Temperatures rise alongside humidity during these months, and you will need to be prepared for downpours, which can flood roads and cut off access to destinations. July and August are very hot, with nighttime temperatures hovering at around 26°C. You can find more information here .

Most travelers will find Vietnam an inexpensive country to visit. As our ultimate travel guide for Vietnam explains, both budget and luxury travelers are well catered for without having to break the bank. Good backpacker hostels will only set you back by around USD 10 per night. However, most consider staying in hotels during a Vietnam tour, since rooms in decent hotels even in big cities can cost as little as USD 40 per person, per night. Transportation is also a great value for money, and food is relatively cheap for the quality and quantity you will receive. Museum entry is usually around USD 2 per ticket.

Most nationals who wish to travel to the country require a visa, obtainable from your nearest Vietnamese embassy for USD 60 to USD 100 per person.

Knowing how long to spend in Vietnam is one of the tricks to having a great vacation. It is possible to cover the highlights of the country during a seven-day tour . However, for greater insight into its history and people along with a feel for what makes Vietnam so special, we advise opting for a ten-day trip instead. With this duration, you can experience everything from the floating markets of the Mekong Delta to the rush-hour traffic of Ho Chi Minh City! Spend two weeks in Vietnam and you can travel from the north of the country to its south (or vice versa) without constantly checking your watch. For more insights on your travel duration, read through our travel article here .

In Vietnam’s major tourist hubs, including the Ha Long Bay and Sa Pa, you will find plenty of people who speak English. Those working and operating hotels and tours will have decent English-language skills. English is primarily spoken by younger generations, with grandparents tending to speak French because of France’s colonial history in the country. In more far-flung destinations, such as the hill villages of the north, you may find locals speak nothing but Vietnamese, which is where a guide really comes in handy!

Visitors to Vietnam need to be careful with gestures and physical contact. For instance, Vietnamese women do not usually shake hands. Hugging should also be avoided, along with patting people on the back – a sign of disrespect in the country. Also avoid the temptation to ruffle the hair of kids, since the head is sacred to the Vietnamese. When it comes to gesturing, pointing at objects or people should not be done with the index finger – use your thumb or pinky instead.  Have your palm facing down when you are calling someone since an open, upward-facing palm is meant for dogs only.

Generally speaking, Vietnam is a very safe destination for visitors. Muggings and street robberies are rare, but you should still use common sense and hide valuable items and large amounts of money. As you might expect, most taxi touts and fake tour guides hang around the big hotels in cities like Hanoi. Just ignore them. Road traffic accidents are probably one of the biggest risks you will face, so stay away from the temptation of riding on a motorbike. In less-visited areas, there is also the risk of unexploded ordinance from the Vietnam War. Only walk where you know it is safe to do so. Find more information here .

Most tours to Vietnam will start either from a tour of Hanoi in the north or a visit to Ho Chi Minh City in the south. Not only are they the locations of major international airports, but they also have a long list of attractions, from museums to Ho Chi Minh City’s war-era Chu Chi tunnels. Few visitors regret deciding to spend a couple of days drifting around the Ha Long Bay, while trekking expeditions in Sa Pa are gaining popularity with each passing day. You also will not want to miss spending a little time on the pristine beaches of Vietnam’s south, or touring the markets in the country – floating and otherwise. Read our article on the best places to visit in Vietnam .

Pho (noodle soup) is perhaps the meal that immediately comes to mind when thinking about Vietnamese food. The country’s cuisine is typified by fresh crunchy vegetables alongside seafood on the coast and chicken or pork away from it. Spring rolls are a common snack and are enjoyed best straight from the frier. Adopting the elements of French culture, baguettes stuffed with cooked meat, pâtés and vegetables are common lunch items in cities. A variety of prawn, pork, and beef dishes served with noodles or rice can be found throughout the day too.

Given the congestion in big cities, it is often easier to walk short distances. For longer journeys, take a taxi. The most efficient way of getting between destinations is by organizing private transport, followed by making use of the country’s expansive coach network. A trip by train is a must during your time in Vietnam but be warned that speed should not be the primary concern while traveling aboard these aging engines. Domestic flights between north and south are increasingly common despite growing concerns about the climate emergency.

To see all that Vietnam has to offer, a cross-country itinerary is definitely the way to go. Although there are plenty of things to do in Ho Chi Minh City , it would be a real shame to limit your scope to just this metropolitan area. That is unless you have a limited time. If you are using Vietnam as a stop-over destination and have just two to three days, staying in the capital or a city close to international airports is the right thing to do.

FAQ about our Vietnam tours

Because Vietnam is a long expanse of country, the best time to travel depends very much on the region. North Vietnam has the driest periods from December to April, but it can also be quite cold during the winter months. In South Vietnam it is hot all year round, only it has a similar period without rain as the north. In central Vietnam, the dry season does not start until around the end of March and April and continues until about June.

Yes, regardless of which country you come from, you need a visa in Vietnam to enter. Fortunately for most nationalities can arrange this online.

To be sure of availability, we recommend booking a few days in advance for day tours. For complete Vietnam round tours it is useful to book at least 2 to 3 months in advance. When you travel during the absolute high season, it is even good to book further in advance.

Local Vietnam has two options; by credit card and by bank transfer.

  • Credit Card : Our bank charges a fee of 4.3% for credit cards.
  • Bank transfer:  Bank transfers go to a European (IBAN), UK- or US account without any additional fees.

We work with various organizations and local guides. This depends on what the possibilities are for each tour and how far you indicate it in advance. It is best to contact us directly about the possibilities.

If you have no idea which Vietnam tour suits you best, it is useful to contact us. By telling you what type of traveler you are and what your wishes are, we can easily advise you with our knowledge.

Yes we do this too. You can request your Vietnam custom made trip here.

All our join in tours are per small group. But yes, some tours also have the option for a private tour. If it is not listed, you can always contact us to view the options. In addition, you can also rent a car in Vietnam with us (including driver), where you can tour privately and with complete freedom.

  • Board a private boat and cruise the Mekong delta, stopping off at some coconut gardens to visit a local home where you’ll sample tropical fruits and coconut jams. Back on land, take a tuk-tuk tour around the villages for a glimpse at rural life.
  • Experience the beauty of Halong Bay from the comfort of a traditional style junk boat – your Feature Stay accommodation. Enjoy a candlelit dinner on deck and soak in the magnificent landscape.

  • Enjoy a tasty Exclusive Experience as you explore a local market with an expert chef in Hue, then visit his home to learn how to turn fresh ingredients into delicious Vietnamese dishes during a cooking class.
  • By travelling on this trip, you’ll directly support our Intrepid Foundation partner, Vun Art. Donations help them empower people with disabilities in Vietnam by providing vocational training and employment opportunities.
  • In 2024, Tet (Lunar New Year) will run from the 9th and 15th of February. This is a fascinating and rewarding time to see the country, however you do need to be prepared for some businesses to be closed, tourist sites to be very busy and for transport to be packed as many Vietnamese are travelling around the country. Please consider your travel arrangements carefully before booking travel for this period.

Welcome to Vietnam! Arrive in Ho Chi Minh City where you'll be met and transferred to your hotel. An important group meeting will take place here at 6pm, where you will meet your fellow travellers and local leader. If you do have time, get out and acquaint yourself with the city beforehand – it is a bustling centre of shopping, historic sites and traffic mayhem. After your meeting, head out for dinner with your small group and leader. As you arrive at your restaurant you’ll step straight into a piece of Vietnamese history – the building was an old opium refinery station built in 1861, and nods to its past still visible today. Here you’ll enjoy a menu bursting with classic dishes and southern Vietnamese favourites – your leader will be on hand to provide recommendations for your first foray into this exciting food scene.

  • Paragon Saigon Hotel or similar (1 night)
  • Complimentary Arrival Transfer
  • Ho Chi Minh City - Welcome Dinner

The arrival transfer is only valid if arriving on Day 1 or if you have booked pre-trip accommodation through us. Please provide your flight details at the time of booking, or at a minimum 14 days prior to travel, as we may not be able to confirm a request made within 14 days of travel. .

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

Rooms at the Paragon Saigon Hotel, and in Ho Chi Minh City in general, are compact given the building style and central location.

After breakfast, drive south towards the Mekong Delta via the region of Ben Tre. Here you will board a private boat and cruise the delta, stopping off at some coconut gardens to visit a local home where you’ll sample tropical fruits and coconut jams. Afterwards, return to the waterways of the delta on board sampans (small rowing boats) and row past the coconut trees and stilt houses that flank the river. Back on land, take a tuk-tuk tour around the villages for a glimpse at rural life and to learn how the coconut industry plays into local life. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant then return to Ho Chi Minh City for an evening at leisure.

  • Mekong Delta - Boat cruise with visits to local producers

Today’s total driving time is approximately 4 hours.

Today you’ll see Ho Chi Minh City through the eyes of a local during a bus and walking tour with your leader. Visit the famous Reunification Palace and hear the story of the end of the war, take a sobering trip to the War Remnants Museum and stop by the beautiful Romanesque Notre Dame Cathedral. Stroll the city’s captivating streets and admire its many French colonial buildings along the way, including the main post office, and the gorgeous Ho Chi Minh City Hall, modelled on Paris’s Hotel de Ville. The rest of the evening is yours – be sure to ask your leader for recommendations on some great local spots for dinner.

  • Ho Chi Minh City - Reunification Palace
  • Ho Chi Minh City - War Remnants Museum
  • Ho Chi Minh City - A O show - VND1050000

This morning after breakfast, head on a half-day trip to the Cu Chi Tunnels – an extensive underground network (some 200 kilometres) of tunnels dug initially by the Viet Minh and later expanded by the Viet Cong. They contained hospitals, dwellings and schools and were used extensively for refuge and storage, as well as being a military base. As you explore this extraordinary labyrinth your leader will explain more about its history and the 1968 Tet Offensive. A section of the tunnels has been widened to allow visitors to get a feel for what the underground life must have been like. Please note that these tunnels will be hot and can get claustrophobic, so there is an option if you’d like to view from above ground. Later this afternoon, fly to Dalat.

  • Golf Valley Hotel or similar (1 night)
  • Ho Chi Minh City - Cu Chi Tunnels

Today’s flight is approximately 1 hour.

Dalat is high in Vietnam’s southern highlands, and is surrounded by hills, pine forests, lakes and waterfalls – it is a natural mountain paradise. Dalat, commonly known as the City of Flowers, is part of a region ideal for growing crops and flowers that cannot be otherwise grown in Vietnam, because of its temperate climate and high rainfall. Today you will have the chance to learn some more about your morning brew and see behind the scenes of speciality coffee production during a tour of a local family-run coffee farm. Follow the journey from growth to harvesting and roasting, and taste some of the carefully crafted final result yourself, leaving with a new appreciation for the humble cup of coffee. Sit down for lunch with the group, then enjoy a free afternoon. You may like to visit the historic Bao Dai palace, or perhaps take a wander around the vibrant local markets.

  • Dalat - Son Pacarama Coffee Farm Visit
  • Dalat - Local Lunch

Enjoy a free morning in Dalat – perhaps head to the Crazy House – a bizarre guesthouse commissioned by avant-garde architect Hang Nga, who still lives on site. In the afternoon, take a short flight to Danang. From here you will embark on a short ride by private vehicle to Hoi An, originally a Cham port town. Hoi An is renowned for its specialist tailors and some do same-day turnaround, so perhaps take this opportunity to get some clothing made from some unique local fabrics. You might also like to visit a local workshop to learn how to make your own rice paper. A Vietnamese cooking class too is a great way to familiarise yourself with some age-old culinary techniques, not to mention feasting on the fruits of your own labour!

  • Mulberry Collection Silk Eco or similar (1 night)

The flight route from Dalat to Da Nang has been suspended with no clear indication of when it will resume. Until flights on the route become available, you will fly to Da Nang via Ho Chi Minh City, adding approximately 2.5 hours to the total travelling time.

Join your leader on a walking tour this morning to discover the Hoi An’s stunning architecture and unique mix of influences. With its charming low tiled houses and tranquil feel, this is a delightful town to walk around. Start with a visit to an opulently decorated historic house that was once home to a prominent trader. Cross the Japanese Covered Bridge, stop by the Chinese assembly hall and pay a visit to a local museum to learn more about the history you uncovered on your walk. Afterwards, sit down to a delicious lunch with the group. This afternoon you are free to make the most of Hoi An and its surrounding areas. Your leader will be able to help with suggestions for extra activities in Hoi An and the nearby countryside.

  • Hoi An - Old Town walking tour
  • Hoi An - Food Adventure Urban Adventure - USD44

A significant port of the Champa Kingdom for centuries, many Cham descendants are still living in Hoi An today. This morning your leader will guide you around My Son Cham, a collection of temples constructed by the Kings of Champa and dating back to the 4th century. Learn about the ancient architecture of this UNESCO site, and see the craters created by American bombs during the war. After exploring the temples, experience an Apsara dance performance, featuring sparkling traditional costumes, panpipes, and drums. The afternoon is free for more exploration, or to relax by the pool at your hotel.

  • Hoi An - My Son Tour

Depart Hoi An today bound for Hue, the former imperial capital and hub of Vietnam's historic past. En route, pass through the Hai Van Pass – a scenic mountainous stretch of highway with views across Lang Co beach. Arrive in Hue and discover its eclectic mix of frenetic streets and peaceful beauty. In the afternoon you will visit the Imperial Citadel, including the Forbidden Purple City. The latter was almost completely destroyed during the Tet Offensive in the Vietnam War, but its humble, foliage-covered ruins remain a testament to its proud history. Here your leader will provide some insight into the horrific damage endured during the war.

  • Emm Hotel Hue or similar (1 night)
  • Hue - Imperial City half day guided tour

Today’s total driving time is approximately 3 hours.

Loosen your belt and ready your appetite as today you will be diving into Hue’s fabulous culinary scene. First up, head to a street food eatery for a seriously tasty breakfast – Bun Bo Hue. This spicy noodle soup is usually made with beef and pig knuckles and is an absolute must-try while in Hue. Then, meet with a local chef and explore a bustling local market where you will taste and smell all the wonderful herbs and ingredients that bring local dishes to life, while learning more about the culture of Vietnamese cuisine along the way. Stop for lunch and enjoy some of Hue’s most celebrated dishes. Continue to the local chef’s delightful home where you will learn how to cook up some simple and delicious dishes using the fresh ingredients you picked up at the market. Take your new knowledge and local recipes back home with you so you can recreate meals that will take you straight back to Vietnam. Later in the afternoon, take a visit to the Thien Mu Pagoda, the unofficial symbol of Hue. The Pagoda is an active Buddhist monastery that dates back to 1601. You will also visit the elaborate royal tomb of Emperor Tu Duc, with its beautiful lake, frangipani and pine trees, and the Imperial Citadel.

  • Hue - Royal tomb of Emperor Tu Duc
  • Hue - Thien Mu Pagoda
  • Hue - Market Tour and Cooking Class
  • Hue - Bun Bo Hue breakfast

Fly from Hue to Hanoi today. Your departure will mostly likely be in the morning but can vary a little depending on flight schedules. Settle in on arrival, then your leader will guide you through the ancient 36 Streets to discover a varied selection of shop-lined alleys that sell everything from souvenirs to exquisite silk clothing, jewellery and embroidered tablecloths. In the afternoon, you will be treated to a traditional Hat Xam performance – this is truly an experience like no other. Hat Xam is an artform of Northern Vietnam dating back to the Tran Dynasty. Originally, this was performed by blind performers, and was enjoyed by local working-class audiences, right up until the late 1950s, when a wave of communism deemed all art forms to be corrupting influences. Today, this style of performance occurs rarely, but you and your group will be taken to a private club house for an exclusive performance; one of the few places where such artists still perform acoustically. The performance includes some story telling aspects and possibly interaction with guests, so be ready to get involved!

  • Le Jardin Hotel Haute Couture Hanoi or similar (1 night)
  • Hanoi - Old Quarter Tour
  • Hanoi - Hat Xam performance

Enjoy a guided half-day tour of Hanoi with your leader, gaining insights to the city’s history during visits to the Temple of Literature, One Pillar Pagoda and the former residence of Vietnam’s most famous revolutionary, Ho Chi Minh. Enjoy a delicious lunch at KOTO restaurant – an Intrepid Foundation supported program that teaches disadvantaged youth hospitality skills. Enjoy a free afternoon for further explorations. The Vietnam Fine Arts museum is well worth a visit, and walking is a great way to explore the city and its many lakes and parks. You'll see that this enchanting northern capital can be quieter than its southern counterpart, and the West Lake, north of the main city, is an ideal place to interact with the locals and relax by its banks.

  • Hanoi - Temple of Literature
  • Hanoi - One Pillar Pagoda & HCM stilt house
  • Hanoi - KOTO lunch
  • Hanoi - Fine Arts Museum - VND30000

Today you will drive to Halong Bay – this World Heritage listed wonder is undoubtedly one of the world’s most spectacular sights. There’s no better way to appreciate the bay’s beauty than on board a junk-style boat – your Feature Stay accommodation for the evening. Carefully designed with traditional touches and modern amenities, you can sit back in complete comfort as you weave through stunning limestone islands, karsts and caves. Stop by Surprise Cave to discover its interesting rock formations with you leader, then retire to the boat for a marvellous seafood lunch. During the warmer months your leader will discuss the option for swimming from Ti Top Island. There is also the option for kayaking to get up close to the towering limestone karsts. This evening’s dinner is sure to be a standout – dine on the deck of the boat by candlelight and watch the sun go down over the magnificent landscape.

  • Secret Halong Cruise (Feature Stay) or similar (1 night)
  • Halong Bay - Overnight Boat Cruise
  • Halong Bay - Kayaking Tour - VND250000

Today’s total travel time is approximately 3 hours. Your main luggage can be left in the hotel in Hanoi. Surprise Cave is accessed via staircases but the pathways inside can be a little uneven and slippery, so good walking shoes or sandals will be useful.

Swimming in the bay from the boats is banned. Kayaking is restricted to designated zones within the bay.

Your wooden junk-style boat has twin-share cabins with en suite facilities and air-conditioning. Due to the limited cabins on board, the single supplement is excluded, and accommodation will be on a twin-share basis.

Local authorities only permit a limited number of boats to stay overnight in Halong Bay. To ensure all travellers can be accommodated on board available boats, on occasion you will stay on a larger boat (with up to 12 cabins) and share your boat with another group. Or, your group may be split across different vessels, in which case a group leader will be present on each boat, and the route taken and inclusions on board will remain the same. In order to arrange the best possible boat, the overnight on Halong Bay may be moved 1 day prior due to availability. If this is the case, the Hanoi touring will be done the day after the Halong Bay overnight cruise.

In the morning, enjoy breakfast on board the boat and perhaps take part in some optional Tai Chi to start off the day. Sail back to the port, disembark and travel back to Hanoi. Arriving back in the capital, enjoy some time to wander around and enjoy some of the city’s attractions you may have missed the first time. You can shop on Hang Gai Street or perhaps enjoy some afternoon tea at the Metropole Hotel. In the evening, join your group and leader for a final dinner in a Hanoi restaurant, sharing stories and reflecting on the highlights of your adventure with your newfound friends.

  • Hanoi - Farewell Dinner
  • Halong Bay - Tai Chi
  • Hanoi - Hoa Lo 'Hanoi Hilton' Prison - VND50000

Your adventure comes to an end after breakfast this morning. If you would like to stay on in Hanoi, we’ll be happy to organise some additional accommodation for you ahead of time (subject to availability).

  • Hanoi - Street Food Experience Urban Adventure - USD40

14 breakfasts, 6 lunches, 3 dinners

Hotel (13 nights), Overnight boat (1 night)

  • Arrival airport transfer
  • Tipping for accommodation, activities and transport

You must provide your flight details to your booking agent at least 14 days prior to travel. 2. A single supplement is available if you'd prefer not to share a room on this trip. The single supplement excludes Day 13 (boat) where you will be in shared accommodation, and is subject to availability. Please speak to your booking agent for further information. 3. All pretty good really. A couple of easy points though: Our guide was absolutely terrific but (so blame whatever on him please) we didnt have any chance to look closely into any active religious events, spaces, ceremonies, or temples, an important part of the country's culture. There were several rather too similar visits to ex-palace museums and mausoleums, so I think one or two of these could be substituted by something interesting or ceremonial in different current local religious practices/venues. The 'snorkel event' needs further thought. Nice day out on the boat, sure, but the sea bed in the snorkel site is nothing to write home about and the water isnt too clean. There are health and safety issues too as the vessel was anchored some distance from the snorkel site and the weather was a little breezy and choppy. Given that most of the group I was with were 'senior citizens', I found it odd that there was no safety swimmer standing by and no obvious recovery line/float system.

Inside Vietnam

I went during the Coronavirus outbreak and I have to say Vietnam was on top of it. Mandatory temperature checks, hand sanitizer everywhere you went, masks. The country was beautiful and the people very friendly. Unfortunately due to the virus outbreak the tour was cancelled halfway through and the government was shutting things off to tourists (such as the Mekong Delta and Halong Bay). I'm sure I would have given it an "Excellent" rating if this didn't happen. The week we did get to do was an amazing experience though!

Cycle Vietnam Tour

Cycle Vietnam

This was our first trip with Explore - and indeed our first Group trip. Everything was amazing. The amount of cycling was perfect, rest stops, support teams, photo opportunities, planning.....everything. A group of four people is a little 'intense' however on the whole we navigated the relationships well within the group. One of the highlights for us was Binh himself. He was such an amazing Guide/Tour Leader - words don't really convey how important he was to our enjoyment of the experience. For us, his personal stories made Vietnam's history come alive, and yet he took care to convey many perspectives on the recent history of the country and people. We were able to meet his parents and visit his home which was really a very special moment. Binh is a real asset to Explore. He is articulate, skilled, very caring and respectful - to the people of Vietnam, to the tour participants and support teams, and to the organisation Explore. With development and growth opportunities he could go very far as a mentor and leader in the company and in the tour industry.

The 10 best places to visit in Vietnam in 2024

With its rolling emerald landscapes, perfect beaches and energetic cities, Vietnam is unsurprisingly a magnet for visitors in search of an incredible travel experience.

This country is teeming with attractions, so it pays to plan your trip around the places you absolutely can't miss. Where you want to go will influence whether you fly into cultured Hanoi in the north or energetic Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) in the south, or whether you bypass these two megacities for the laid-back beaches of tropical Phu Quoc.

Start your travel to-do list now with our ten favorite places to visit in Vietnam.

People splash around in the turquoise water of a beautiful island

1. Phu Quoc

Best for beach lovers

About as far south as you can get from Hanoi without splashing into the Gulf of Thailand, the island of Phu Quoc is where beach worshippers come to pray. Lapped by jewel-blue waters and edged by fine sandy beaches, this is a place to slip into low gear, reaching for a cocktail as the ember-colored sun dips into the bay.

But it's far from undiscovered – local tourists come in droves for theme park thrills at VinWonders and giddying views over the sea from the world's longest over-sea cable car. Phu Quoc is a popular stop for families, and if you fancy a change from the tourist scene, there are dense jungles to explore inland from the sand.

Planning tip: If you're bound for Phu Quoc, there's no need to go via Hanoi and HCMC; numerous Asian airlines offer flights from hubs such as Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Seoul, connecting with long-haul flights further afield.

Best for city slickers

Every trip has to start somewhere, and the ideal point of arrival for first-timers is Vietnam's historic capital. As well as easy infrastructure, inexpensive accommodation, world-class dining and more history than you'll ever have time to take in, Hanoi is the leaping-off point for the islands and outcrops around Halong Bay and the forest-draped trails of the mountainous northwest. Give yourself time to graze through Vietnam's catalog of street food treats  and pause to soak up the atmosphere in cozy cafes in the Old Quarter as well as rush around the sights.

Planning tip: To enjoy Hanoi nightlife on a budget, swing by the streetside bia hoi (draft beer) stalls at busy Bia Hoi Junction on the drinking strip of P Ta Hein.

A woman in a kayak holds her oar above her head as she floats along in a peaceful bay

3. Lan Ha Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay

Best for iconic photos

The crowds mob Halong Bay , but for our money, the shimmering bays to the north and south have a slight edge over Vietnam's most famous collection of outcrops and islands. While trips to Halong Bay are highly commercialized, with motorized luxury junks blowing diesel fumes around the eroded karst islands, Lan Ha Bay  and Bai Tu Long Bay  are a bit more laid-back, and you won't have quite so many cruise ships in your photos. Try kayaking between the outcrops, explore the tropical trails on Cat Ba Island – gateway to Lan Ha Bay – or kick back on the sand on Bai Tu Long's idyllic Co To Island.

Planning tip: If you visit Cat Ba Island, take time to explore the trails around Cat Ba National Park – if you trek with your own guide, it's easy to leave the crowds behind.

4. Ho Chi Minh City

Best for a sense of the past

Cosmopolitan Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) is the southern counterweight to Hanoi in the north, taking its cultural cues from the Mekong Delta and neighboring Cambodia . It's fast-paced, frenetic and fun, particularly after dark, when the pavements transform into a mobile buffet of street food stalls and roadside bars.

A little of the frontier feel of the war years lives on in HCMC, and you can learn more about this violent period at sites such as the War Remnants Museum . The ghosts of French Indochina linger too – set aside some time to wander past the city's colonial-era landmarks, then settle into a coffee shop with a drip-brewed ca phi .

Planning tip: For a break from the city crush, swing out to nearby Tay Ninh, where the Cao Dai Holy See offers a fascinating introduction to the all-embracing Cao Dai religion.

A handful of yellow and red tents can be seen erected on a sand bar near the entrance to a cave

5. Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park

Best for unique experiences

Vietnam's biggest natural attraction – literally – is Hang Son Doong Cave, the largest cavern in the world by volume and a true wonder. An entire New York City block could fit inside its vast main passage, but this monster cavern is only accessible on expensive guided treks.

The good news is that  Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park  is pockmarked with caverns that you can clamber, crawl, boat or zipline through for a fraction of the cost. Trips to the Tu Lan, Phong Nha and Paradise caves are possible on a shoestring budget; more cash will buy access to Hang En, where trekkers set up tents on an underground beach, illuminated by shafts of natural light.

Best for history

A stay in harmonious Hoi An is a journey into Vietnam's lavish, layered past. This was once one of the most important ports in Asia, and traders from as far afield as Japan, Spain and North America filled the pockets of its merchants with gold. Locals used their money wisely, packing the Old Town with teetering shophouses, tea warehouses, fanciful covered bridges, elaborate Chinese guildhalls, and colorful Confucian and Buddhist pagodas. History is only the beginning – many travelers stay for days, learning to make white rose dumplings and summer rolls on chef-led cooking courses, and ordering made-to-measure suits and gowns from the city's modestly priced tailors' shops.

Planning tip: For a change of pace, head inland from Hoi An and spend a night in a friendly community homestay in the Co Tu minority village of Bho Hoong.

An aerial view of the beach of Nha Trang. The beach runs right alongside the city, with a number of skyscrapers and modern buildings visible just behind the golden sands.

7. The Central Beaches

Best for sun-seekers

Sandy bays stud Vietnam's central coastline, but the mood varies widely from beach to beach. Package tourists flock to high-rise Danang  and Nha Trang – famed as military R&R stops during the American War – but we rate the calmer beaches along the coast, where a little of Vietnam's old seaside charm still endures. To the south of Nha Trang, Mui Ne is a lively kitesurfing hub following a string of sandy coves, while Doc Let Beach to the north serves up 18km (11 miles) of sand, surf and seafood. For a quieter experience, hit the coast between Hue and Danang – Thuan An is the gateway to a string of serene and sandy beaches flanking a lagoon-backed barrier island.

Best for imperial history

The former capital of the Nguyen dynasty – which ruled over large parts of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia in the 19th and 20th centuries – drips with imperial history, despite the ravages of US bombers during the American War. Much was lost in Hue , but the grandeur of dynastic Vietnam lives on in the Citadel and Imperial Enclosure , housing the emperor's residence, temples, palaces and court. At one time, entering without permission would bring instant death. Just outside town are the tombs of Vietnam's greatest emperors, resting serenely in green compounds beside the Perfume River. Another relic of royal rule is Hue's imperial cuisine – arguably the finest in the country – try a spicy bowl of bun bo Hue (vermicelli noodle soup) or a crispy banh khoai pancake, and you'll see what we mean.

Planning tip: To stay one step ahead of the crowds at Hue's imperial tombs and rent a motorcycle or scooter to explore; don't miss the Thien Mu Pagoda on your way out of the city.

An empty boat floats along in Ba Be National Park. Beyond the boat the shimmering still waters of the lake is visible, which is backed by numerous mountains, most of which are covered in forest.

9. Ba Be National Park

Best for lake and forest scenery

Vietnam has more than 30 national parks , taking in everything from coastal swamps to mountain jungles, but some are firmly on the tourist trail, and the crowds can be an impediment to spotting wildlife. That's less of a problem in lovely Ba Be National Park , where trails weave between the limestone peaks to Hmong, Tay and Dzao villages, and boat and kayak trips cross serene lakes hemmed in by forested ridges, creating scenes worthy of a medieval woodcut. The park is a haven for everything from macaques and langur monkeys to rare black bears, scaly pangolins and the spectacular crested serpent eagle.

Planning tip: Comfy accommodation in village homes completes the sense of stepping off the mainstream tourist circuit. For an intimate homestay experience, check out the family-run guesthouses in Pac Ngoi village, accessible by bus from Hanoi, via the village of Cho Don.

10. Ha Giang

Best for mountain views

Trekking to the minority villages in the hills around Sapa  is one of Vietnam's top draws, but the country's trekking capital feels rather commercialized these days. Hikers have to walk further every year to find the rural idyll that first drew people to the northwest.

For scenic countryside without the company, remote Ha Giang  province is Vietnam's new frontier. Staying in simple village homestays, you can hike out to minority villages and rice terraces tucked between the soaring limestone peaks, and motor (or pedal) over some of Vietnam's most spectacular passes. You'll want to take plenty of photos on the winding mountain road between Ha Giang town, Dong Van and Meo Vac.

Planning tip: If you're confident in the saddle, motorcycles can easily be rented in Ha Giang town – just ride slowly and be ready for rainy conditions!

Is affordable luxury in Southeast Asia a myth? We went to find out.

There’s a popular refrain Western travelers repeat about Southeast Asia: “The flight’s expensive , but once you get there everything’s cheap.” You can find “White Lotus” luxuries for Holiday Inn prices, they say.

When I moved to Bangkok in 2014 , I learned quickly that wasn’t the whole story, and I had a dwindling savings account to prove it. Yes, you could get street food for $1 and massages for less than $10. And you could also blow money eating , drinking and traveling like anywhere else.

But Southeast Asia’s reputation of luxury for less is not necessarily a myth , particularly when comparing it to other popular destinations. In January, average nightly hotel rates were $126 in Bangkok, according to STR , a hospitality data and analytics company, lower than $151 in London, $391 in Hawaii and $145 in Tokyo.

Unlike in those other locales, “in most parts of Thailand, $100 a night is going to get you something really, really nice,” said Robert Sukrachand , a furniture designer who splits his time between Chiang Mai, Thailand, and New York.

Myriad factors contribute to lower prices in the region, such as how far the dollar goes, labor costs and the lower cost of living in most of Southeast Asia compared with the United States. And like many other tourist-heavy destinations, what’s a deal for Western tourists could be out of reach for many locals.

To find deals, Sukrachand says you’ll have to do some research on local favorites and price standards. Having a baseline of what things cost is helpful to get the most value out of your trip. Finding lower prices usually means getting away from the well-trodden tourist paths of Phnom Penh or Penang, and skipping the tuk-tuks closest to the popular temples.

If you want to save on hotels, look for a boutique property

On a recent trip to Las Vegas , my off-the-Strip hotel room with a Murphy bed cost $185 per night. A month before that, I paid $134 for a motel off the freeway in Iowa . For $10 less than my Iowa rate, I got a suite with a living room and two balconies overlooking a canal at the Siamotif Boutique Hotel in Bangkok.

I followed the advice of Katie Carew , a luxury travel adviser with the Travel Edge Network, who told me local brands offered better deal than international ones. I ended up at Siamotif, a traditional Thai wooden house with seven guest rooms, each with its own name and unique design. Technically, it was a three-star property but had a “superb” rating on Booking.com . Every morning, my complimentary breakfast was made from scratch; a Thai omelet with red curry and chicken one day, nam prik ong with rice and vegetables the next.

When it comes to hotels in Bangkok, it’s a buyers market. The country has an oversupply of traveler accommodations, and the hotel industry is continuing to expand, according to an analysis from Krungsri Thai bank. I could have found less-expensive hotels, even ones in the center of the city or in sleek high-rise buildings with sweeping views. More expensive options can be found closer to tourist hot spots — just like prices rise the closer you get to the Eiffel Tower in Paris or the beach in Waikiki — or with international brands.

“Whether you are in New York City or Switzerland or Vietnam, the highest level hotel is pretty much the same price across the world,” Carew said.

In Vietnam, I wanted to splurge in between overnight train rides from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi. I could go all out at Vedanā Lagoon Resort & Spa near Danang, where overwater villas ran just over $200 per night. Instead of faking a honeymoon, I went to their sister property, the Pilgrimage Village Boutique Resort & Spa in Hue. At check-in, staff gave me a little tapioca and banana dessert, a cup of ginger tea and a frozen hand towel. My “Deluxe Double” room — a short walk away from the pool and swim-up bar — was $96 and came with a buffet breakfast, morning tai chi and yoga, and a 30-minute spa voucher.

I did get burned by a few local hotels’ misleading photos and descriptions. In Phuket, my $76-per-night “boutique hotel” turned out to be a dank cement cube with a hard bed — and not in a chic minimalist way. And in Hanoi, my $30 hotel “Superior room” didn’t have a window and was so small I could barely open the door.

Khoa Nguyen, who co-owns the Vietnam travel company In Country Tours with his wife, Michelle, says luxury hotels have been faring better since the pandemic than others. “Many of the two, three, four-star hotels are not up to standard yet,” Nguyen said. “The five-stars are more reliable.”

Seek out self care where locals go

Wellness is a cornerstone of tourism in Southeast Asia, but it’s not just for tourists. “Massage is not really a luxury in Thailand,” Sukrachand said. “It’s something that people all over the country — even in rural areas — have built into their culture.”

I had afternoon massages in Bangkok and Phuket to help with jet lag and recover from full days of walking. Instead of going to luxury hotels where rates were close to those I’d find at home in D.C., I went with smaller places that catered to both locals and tourists. I paid $5 for a 30-minute foot massage, $8 for an hour-long massage and $55 full-body oil massage at a more upscale spa in a private room.

The further from tourist areas, the better the rates. At a market between a college and a hospital, I got an $18 manicure and pedicure that was so perfect, I had to leave a review .

In Vietnam, I needed a different kind of spa after nearly two weeks of dining out and sweating on the backs of motorbikes in humid cities. To address my acne flare-up, I searched Google Maps for “medical spa” in Hanoi and found a same-day appointment to see a dermatologist. For $21, I had a consultation with the doctor, was given an hour-long treatment from a nurse practitioner who steamed and massaged my face, performed some pore extractions, applied a thick goopy peel-off mask and finished with LED light therapy .

World-class dining for a midrange bill

I landed in Vietnam ready to eat, particularly in Ho Chi Minh City. Vietnamese American writer Dan Dao, who’s based there, noted the only place on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list in Vietnam is based in the city.

That restaurant is Anan , where the 1o-course tasting menu costs $100 — a fraction of the $425, 10-course tasting menu at another 50 Best restaurant, SingleThread Farm in California. Still, I opted to order from the a la carte menu. My elaborate gin cocktail, glass bottle of sparkling water, three dishes, tax and service charge totaled $47, by far my most expensive meal of the trip. I offset that by having a $2 banh mi lunch the next day.

While high-end restaurants cater to wealthy locals, international travelers and expats, Vietnam’s street food and mom-and-pop shops are for everyone, even those who can afford nicer restaurants, Dao says. You’ll find the city’s wealthy eating at inexpensive places “because the quality is simply the best for those kinds of dishes,” he said.

Dao says like in the United States, there’s a perception in Vietnam that certain Asian food — like street food — should be cheap, which can be limiting to business owners. But in Vietnam, it can be easier to keep prices down when businesses can operate from home or without a brick-and-mortar shop and “the cost of goods is just lower,” Dao said.

After dinner at Anan, I considered going to award-winning bars like Nhau Nhau or the Alley , where average cocktail prices are $5 to $6; the equivalent in D.C. would be $14. In Bangkok, prices are a little steeper at the city’s top bars and restaurants. “The food and cocktail scene in Bangkok now is as good if not better than New York City,” Sukrachand said, both in terms of design and quality, and for cuisine beyond Thai food.

You can bounce around the city’s best cocktail spots like Tep Bar and Tropic City for $12 a drink. Elaborate tasting menus at the one-Michelin star Nahm cost between $75 and $93; my mom and I saved on the bill a few years ago by going for lunch a la carte. At a beachside restaurant in Phuket, I had an amazing plate of fried clams in sweet chile sauce, a massive yellow crab curry, rice and beer for $22. At the Thai place across the street from my apartment in D.C., curries start at $16.

Private tours aren’t just for wealthy tourists

Sukrachand told me that in Thailand, “some of the best food is some of the least expensive food, but ... without somebody showing you around, you’re not necessarily going to find it.” It was a good reminder to book some food tours on my trip. For $25, I joined a group tour in Hanoi and ate delicious food at seven places that I would have never found on my own. For $65, I booked a half-day private excursion in Hue with Nguyen’s In Country Tours. The extra $40 made the experience feel above my pay grade.

When the wealthy travel , they don’t do it with the masses. They go private — private villas, private guides, private planes. The average traveler can get a taste of that in Southeast Asia.

For $17, my Bangkok hotel offered to arrange a private airport pickup , the kind where the driver waits in the terminal with your name on a sign and has cold water for you in the car. For $23, I took a Muay Thai class in Phuket with private instruction. My private tour in Hue was $65 and included transportation to and from my hotel, plus dining at places where Anthony Bourdain ate. I didn’t feel like a tourist; I felt like a celebrity with a fixer.

All of these cost more than the lowest-priced options, but paying a little more went so much further.

Is affordable luxury in Southeast Asia a myth? We went to find out.
