Cruising guide, why cruise to australia.
A top bucket-list destination for many travelers, Australia offers some of the world's most enticing attractions -- from the largest coral reef in the world to snuggly looking koalas, and from vast deserts to some of the best surf beaches on the planet.
Most of Australia's major cities are along its coastline, making a cruise the best way to visit the country, especially if you can hop on a circumnavigation cruise that circles the entire continent.
And, considering the time it takes to drive or train between Australia's cities or the cost of flying from city to city, a cruise is also the most economical way to see the country.
What are Popular Activities in Australia?
Australia offers a staggering selection of activities, making it an ideal vacation for groups of friends or families, or for couples.
With so much coastline, water fun is abundant in Australia. If you've never tried surfing, there's no better place for it. Divers and snorkelers will want to check out the Great Barrier Reef for some of the greatest underwater scenery in the world.
For wildlife you don't need to get wet to see, there are plenty of chances to view kangaroos, koalas, wombats and wallabies in zoos, or even in the wild.
Anyone who prefers more urban diversions can check out the numerous museums in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Tour Sydney's opera house, test your courage on a Harbour Bridge climb or learn about Aboriginal culture at one of several Aboriginal centers.
Other popular activities include wine-tastings, shopping and visiting a tiny bit of the continent's vast deserts and outback.
When is a Good Time to Cruise to Australia?
Australia is a year-round cruise destination, though high season is between October and April, the region's spring and summer. You'll find the largest choice of cruise ships, sailing dates and itineraries during these months.
Keep in mind the Australian cyclone season begins November 1 and ends April 30, so if you sail during those months be prepared for itineraries to change if a storm arises.
If you're cruising during the Australian summer (December through February) expect it to get hot, up to the mid- to high-90s Fahrenheit.
What are Popular Ports in Australia?
The most popular ports of call on Australia cruises are Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Fremantle (Perth), Cairns, Darwin, Newcastle and Hobart (Tasmania).
Other ports that are starting to pop up on itineraries more frequently include Burnie, Port Arthur, the Mornington Peninsula, Kangaroo Island and Port Lincoln.
Where do Australia cruises depart from?
Most cruises depart from Sydney, but you can also find cruises that leave from Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Fremantle (Perth).
What are Popular Regions of Australia?
Most big-ship cruises don't offer any particular region of Australia, but instead sail to the country's biggest cities. Others, however, stick to Queensland and the Sunshine Coast visiting Newcastle, Brisbane, Cairns and Moreton Island.
Many Australia cruises also call on ports in New Zealand -- such as Auckland, Tauranga or Akaroa -- as part of an Australia/New Zealand itinerary.
Popular with expedition cruise lines is the Kimberley region (out west) and Australia's Northwest. Big ships might stop at one or two spots along this area, likely Freemantle (Perth), but only smaller ships can get into the niche ports that line the country's western coast.
What are Tips to Find Cruise deals to Australia?
Here are our best tips for finding a cheap cruise or cruise deal to Australia. If you book a “guaranteed cabin” (they select for you), a cabin on a lower deck or sail on an older ship from a brand you like, then you can get the best price for a specific cruise to Australia. Last minute cruises deals to Australia appear as you get closer to the sail date, usually 1-2 weeks in advance. Taking a cruise to Australia in the shoulder season (before or after the peak season) can also be a great way to find a cruise deal.

Once the richest city in the world thanks to a gold rush, Melbourne is Australia's cultural capital with striking architecture, chic galleries and boutiques. Wave at a wallaby or get close to a koala at a wildlife park. Feel closer to the land on a ride on the Puffing Billy steam locomotive through the mountains and countryside. Back in the city, explore a different culture and visit Chinatown - the oldest one in the West.
As Victoria's oldest European settlement, Portland boasts numerous bluestone 19th century buildings and historic attractions that you can visit on guided tours. Learn about the city's rich seafaring background at the Maritime Discovery Centre, visit the WWII Memorial Lookout Tower and linger in the colourful Botanical Gardens. Take to the sea on a wide range of outdoor adventures, from whale watching and surfing to fishing, kayaking and more. Or lace up your comfortable walking shoes and enjoy fantastic vistas whilst exploring waterfront and clifftop trails. There's something for everyone to enjoy in Portland.
Ranked as one of the world's most livable cities, Adelaide is ideally nestled between the ocean and the foothills of the Mt. Lofty Ranges. In addition to the abundance of outdoor adventures available from the sea to the mountains, Adelaide is known for its thriving arts and culture scenes. Spot colourful street art whilst heading to one of the museums or art galleries found throughout the city. Stick to the coastline as you explore picturesque beaches or journey inland to visit some of the numerous vineyards located in the region. From kayaking, hiking and sunbathing to boutique shopping, learning about Aboriginal culture and more, get ready for an unforgettable day in Adelaide.
As its name suggests, you will indeed encounter kangaroos whilst visiting Kangaroo Island. But there's so much more to see in addition to Australia's national animal. Situated 70 miles off the coast of Adelaide, Kangaroo Island is home to diverse wildlife, including the koala, platypus and tammar wallaby. Explore some of the island's rugged 330 miles of coastline and visit sea lion and long-nosed fur seal colonies. Go sandboarding on the otherworldly landscape of Little Sahara sand dunes. Sample honey made from Ligurian honey bees - the island boasts the only purebred and disease-free population of this bee species. Or go vineyard hopping and discover a new favourite vintage. Experience an unforgettable day on an island unlike any other.
Hobart is Tasmania's capital city that blends culture, historical sites and a vibrant artistic community against a backdrop of staggering natural beauty. Get a taste of local life by strolling Salamanca Place in Sullivan's Cove - a cobblestone square bustling with art galleries, boutique shops, restaurants and live music. Journey to the Tasman Peninsula to explore the island's beautiful wilderness and perhaps spot the famed Tasmanian Devil.
Carved by ancient glaciers, Milford Sound, which is really a fjord, is the crown jewel of Fiordland National Park and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is only nine miles long from its head to the open sea, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in grandeur. Its vertical cliffs covered in verdant rainforests provide a breathtaking backdrop to thundering waterfalls, misty rainbows and the tannin-stained waters of the fjord. Below the surface is the largest population of black coral in the world. Milford Sound receives an amazing 22 feet of precipitation annually, yet there are only two permanent waterfalls, Lady Bowen and Sterling Falls. Depending on the weather, waterfalls can appear around every corner, cascading down the mountain in spectacular fashion. Rising upwards of 5,555 feet, the iconic landmark of Milford Sound is Mitre Peak, named for its resemblance to a bishop's hat, known as a mitre. Five individual peaks create its distinctive shape.
At 25 miles in length, and five miles wide at its broadest, Dusky Sound is the largest and most spectacular fjord in Fjordland National Park. Captain Cook named Dusky Sound in 1770, as he sailed past its entrance at twilight. Three years later, he returned and stayed 47 days as his crew repaired and replenished his ship, Resolution, after sailing 11,000 nautical miles from Cape Town. You can still see evidence of his landfall at Astronomer's Point, an overlook where the crew removed trees, so the ship's astronomer could get a reading on the stars. Dusky Sound is only accessible by boat or plane making its remoteness a haven for birds and a breeding site for Fjordland crested penguins. These endangered creatures are easy to spot with their bright yellow eyebrows. Other wildlife to look for include sunbathing seals on Seal Rock and southern right whales at Preservation Inlet. Upon entering Dusky Sound, it's customary to make a resolution as you sail past Resolution Island, named after Cook's ship.
Although technically not a sound (it's a fjord), Doubtful Sound is the second longest in New Zealand-and the country's second most famous tourist attraction. It does, however, capture the top spot for being the deepest, at over 1,300 feet. Doubtful Sound sits at the far southwest corner of the country and winds its way for 24 miles, past small islets and lush mountains covered in dense, native rainforest. With a staggering amount of precipitation, up to 240 inches, it's no wonder that it's so verdant, and also why most days are wet and misty with low-lying clouds. But where there is rain, there are rainbows, which makes for spectacular scenes, especially at the many waterfalls, some of which fall over 2,000 feet. Doubtful Sound is also home to fur seals, crested penguins, bottlenose dolphin and whales. Black coral even grows here at relatively shallow depths (35 feet) thanks to the sunlight's inability to penetrate the top layer of freshwater, stained heavy with tannins from the forests.
This dramatic South Island coastal town offers a mix of unique natural beauty and fascinating history. Rare, yellow-eyed penguins, fur seals and the Royal Albatross all call Dunedin home. Equally impressive is the Victorian and Edwardian architecture that dates from its days as a gold rush town. New Zealand's only castle sits high above the city and offers sweeping views from its famous gardens. Shop for a locally made souvenir, with crafts, artwork, wool and leather items being popular.
Travel to a Victorian past as you stroll by the city's Victorian Gothic buildings. Take the cable car up the mountain for a fantastic view, or grab some sunscreen and head to the beach. Great views abound in Wellington: Journey around the spectacular harbor and enjoy its amazing views. See some of the sites where the Lord of the Rings trilogy was filmed. Shopping opportunities are plentiful, with arts and crafts, jewellery, fine woolens and leather goods on offer.
Built around a sheltered harbor, Picton is lined with cafés and restaurants for you to choose from (we suggest the fish and chips). Popular attractions in Picton include a maritime museum and an aquarium. But this town is not short on recreational activities. Some of Picton's favourite pastimes include fishing, dolphin watching and sea kayaking. Walk or bike the Queen Charlotte Track or spend the day exploring the scenic Marlborough Sounds. Check out one of the many wine tours (probably after biking the track). Then relax as you browse the local shops that offer a wide range of trinkets, including handmade jewellery, paintings from local artists and woodcarvings. Before leaving Picton, it's time for more fish and chips along the shore. It's the Picton way!
Napier calls itself the Art Deco capital of the world, but it's also a leading wine-travel destination. Leveled by an earthquake in 1931, Napier was rebuilt in Art Deco style. Along with Miami Beach, Napier is one of the best examples of this style, with many of its structures well preserved. Take a walk down Marine Parade, a tree-lined ocean boulevard with fountains and gardens, or go out to the country to enjoy the lovely vistas, tour superb area vineyards and relax with a glass of wine.
Go walk-about and explore Tauranga, set on the beautiful Bay of Plenty. And indeed there are plenty of things to do. Head to the beach or discover Tauranga's lovely parks and rich history. Visit a village buried by a volcanic eruption and captured in a moment of time - a fascinating yet moving experience. Take a selfie at Hell's Gate, an aptly named geothermal park with boiling pools, fantastic geysers and mud baths, the largest of which is Poutamu, "the stairway to heaven."
Surrounded by tranquil golden beaches, lush forests and dramatic coastal trails, Auckland is a nature lover's paradise. The 48 volcanic cones that dot the surrounding area provide stunning panoramic views of the city and harbor. New Zealand's largest city is also a shopper's paradise offering everything from top designers to local open-air markets. Learn about the indigenous Maori and take home some native art pieces or jewellery. The fine, locally produced woolens also make excellent gifts.

Why the best way to see Australia is on a cruise
K nown for its epic road and rail trips through the vast, open countryside of the dusty Outback , Australia is often overlooked by Brits as a cruise destination. Yet the world’s largest island has over 37,000 miles of coastline fronting the Southern, Pacific and Indian Oceans, plus various smaller seas. Even the locals know the appeal of the sea, with 85 per cent of Australians living within 50km of the coast.
As a result, almost every kind of cruise imaginable can be found here; be it on a mega-ship with stacks of facilities; a boutique brand with a more refined air; a luxurious riverboat; or an expedition ship that can venture to truly out-of-the-way places. And with most of Australia's key attractions and cities scattered around its fringes, explorations by cruise (preferably topped and tailed with land-based touring) can pack any number of Down Under wonders into a single trip.
I've been lucky enough to visit Australia more than a dozen times, and some of my greatest memories are of experiences that I've had from the deck of a ship. I once set sail to New Zealand from Sydney, with the tiles atop the Opera House gleaming in the sunshine as we passed, and far from land on the Great Barrier Reef, I leaned over the railings to marvel at its underwater patchwork of cobalt and turquoise in an otherwise midnight-blue sea.
Perhaps the most incredible experience of all was a cruise in the Kimberley : the little-visited wilderness region at the top of Western Australia. It's vast and sparsely populated – bigger than Britain but with fewer residents than a mid-sized English town – and its attractions are so remarkable that they would be crowded with visitors were they easier to access. But on a small-ship sailing with Coral Expeditions, I was one of just 120 guests exploring the waterfalls, reefs and ancient rock art for which the Kimberley is famed.
At the uninhabited Lacepede Islands, we saw seabirds and turtles in mind-boggling numbers. In Talbot Bay, we powered through one-of-a-kind Horizontal Falls in a Zodiac. And at Montgomery Reef, we watched a coral-encrusted plateau seemingly rise from the sea on a falling tide.
It wasn’t only the epic landscapes and their intriguing wildlife – humpback whales, lemon sharks, saltwater crocs – that impressed. Etched in my memory is the experience of first seeing the Wandjina (ancient rock art). These alien beings stare down from rock art galleries across the region: a symbol of the oldest continuous culture on the planet, and of the Indigenous people's long connection to the land. A land littered with surprises best experienced by boat.
Classic Kimberley
Remote, isolated and with little infrastructure for land-based journeys, there are few parts of the world as suited to expedition cruises as the Kimberley. Explore it with Coral Expeditions – the pioneers of cruising in the region – on a formula perfected over four decades of operations. Itineraries are timed to experience key sites at optimal tidal phases: expect to see Montgomery Reef being drained by dozens of miniature cascades, and Horizontal Falls at its powerful best.
How to do it
Ten-night cruises between Darwin and Broome with Coral Expeditions operate between April and September and cost from £3,965pp; excludes flights.
Aussie icons
Sydney Opera House and the Great Barrier Reef are two of Australia’s most recognisable icons. Experience both with Princess Cruises, whose journeys up the eastern seaboard from Sydney to tropical North Queensland stop in Cairns for reef and Daintree Rainforest excursions, and Airlie Beach, gateway to the gorgeous Whitsunday Islands.
How to do it
A 16-night Sydney & Queensland Showcase cruise-and-stay from Cruise Kings (0800 197 8050) includes an 11-night round-trip cruise from Sydney aboard Majestic Princess and a three-night pre-cruise Sydney stay from £2,799pp. Departs January 26 & March 26 2024; departs September 8 2023; includes flights. .
Southern comforts
Make the festive season extra-special on a cruise along Australia’s entire south coast, taking in nine ports of call. Esperance, Adelaide, Cape Le Grand National Park and Kangaroo Island are among the highlights, with shore excursion that include wine tastings and local wildlife sightings. Better still, spend Christmas Day at sea before arriving in Sydney for a two-night stay that coincides with New Year’s Eve.
The 14-night Australia Intensive Voyage from Perth to Melbourne with Azamara Cruises (0344 4934016) departs December 21 2023 & December 20 2024 and costs from £2,859pp. Excludes flights.
Over the top
Nobody is more qualified to share Australia’s stories than its traditional owners and custodians. On a voyage through remote Barrier Reef islands en route to Cape York and Arnhem Land, you will meet indigenous Torres Strait islanders and other Aboriginal peoples to experience their culture, art and homelands, including Garig Gunak Barlu National Park. Along the way, spy dugongs, turtles, saltwater crocodiles and the birdlife of Kakadu’s wetlands.
A 13-night Australia's Top End cruise from Cairns to Darwin with Scenic (0808 273 6069; scenic.co.uk ) departs April 28 2024 and costs from £11,108pp. Excludes flights.

River cruises are rare down under, making an active experience on the mighty Murray – the nation’s principal waterway – all the more remarkable. Murray River Trails offers short cruises aboard a 12-berth houseboat, with a daily programme of guided walks and activities. The small-group, into-the-wild nature of the experience lends itself to wildlife encounters, with sightings of echidnas, emus, koalas and unusual native birds all possible. It is a fascinating insight into authentic inland Australia.
The three-night Murray River Walk departs May–Sep and costs from £1,500pp. Excludes flights.
Kim and swim
The Kimberley may have beguiling blue waters, but dips in the sea are foolhardy (and forbidden) due to the dangerous saltwater crocodiles that call the region home. Sidestep that inconvenience on a voyage with Ponant, which combines classic Kimberley elements (Montgomery Reef, Horizontal Falls) with the little-visited Rowley Shoals – one of the world’s most sensational snorkelling and diving destinations. Located west of Broome, in the Timor Sea, these croc-free coral atolls brim with colourful sea life.
An eight-night cruise round-trip from Broome departs September 8 2023 and costs from £11,835pp through Mundy Adventures (020 7399 7630; mundyadventures.co.uk ); includes flights.
Queensland immersion
Take a deep dive down under on a Great Barrier Reef & Beyond itinerary with Windstar Cruises. This holiday is particularly good for wildlife-lovers. Look out for wedge-tailed shearwaters, sooty terns and noddies while passing Willis Island; spot dingoes on sandy Fraser Island; and cuddle a koala at Australia Zoo (established by the late Steve Irwin). Show-stopping Whitehaven Beach is an unforgettable trip highlight.
An 11-night sailing from Cairns to Melbourne with Windstar Cruises (0808 178 2233; windstarcruises.com ) departs December 6 2023 and costs from £7,499pp. Includes flights and pre-cruise overnight in Cairns.
Western wonders
Unlike the Barrier Reef, which clings to the continental shelf, magnificent Ningaloo Reef fringes Western Australia’s coast. Discover it and the archipelagos of Abrolhos, Monte Bello and Dampier on a small-ship expedition that mixes snorkelling and shipwrecks with whale-watching and indigenous rock art. Enhance the experience by foraging and fishing for mud crabs and oysters, or take sightseeing to new heights in the ship’s helicopter.
How to do it
The 10-night West Coast Explorer cruise with True North sails from Fremantle to Dampier on March 7 2024 and costs from £12,208pp. Excludes flights
Island state
Raw nature meets colonial history and premium produce in Tasmania, not to mention one-of-a-kind wildlife such as white wallabies and Tasmanian devils. Sip local cool-climate wines and visit the likes of Bruny Island and Wineglass Bay while sailing from Hobart. The cruise is complemented with a self-drive exploration of the island’s west and north coast regions.
A 17-night holiday with Tasmanian Odyssey (01534 735449) combining Coral Expeditions' 10-night Coastal Wilds or Coastal Treks cruise with a 7-night self-drive land tour costs from £5,475pp. Departs Jan–Feb 2024 & 2025; excludes flights.
All the way
Go all out and see more of the continent on a full circumnavigation of the vast island. Sail the Coral, Timor and Tasman Seas, the Indian Ocean and the Great Australian Bight on an odyssey starting and finishing in Sydney. Travelling via every coastal state and territory, ports of call include cosmopolitan Melbourne, tropical Darwin, lively Fremantle and Phillip Island with its unforgettable koala and penguin encounters.
A 34-night Australian Panorama sailing with Oceania Cruises is available through Mundy Cruising (020 7399 7670; mundycruising.co.uk ) from £8,729pp, including flights. Departs December 22 2024.

By CNT Editors
It’s inevitable: Every spring when we pull together the Hot List , our annual collection of the world’s best new hotels, restaurants , and cruise ships , a staffer remarks that this latest iteration has got to be the best one ever. After a year’s worth of traveling the globe—to stay the night at a converted farmhouse in the middle of an olive grove outside Marrakech, or sail aboard a beloved cruise line’s inaugural Antarctic voyage—it’s easy to see why we get attached. But this year’s Hot List, our 28th edition, might really be the best one ever. It’s certainly our most diverse, featuring not only a hotel suite that was once Winston Churchill’s office, but also the world’s largest cruise ship and restaurants from Cape Town to Bali. We were surprised and inspired by this year’s honorees, and we know you will be too. These are the Hot List hotel winners for 2024.

Nicole Kidman appears to reference ex-husband Tom Cruise in a rare moment during AFI speech
Kidman has a strained relationship with Cruse and the children they share together, and they were all absent from the glitzy event.
Netflix star hits back at affair claims
Rock legend announces shock split
Sandilands’ wild claim about Delta Goodrem
Nicole Kidman appeared to make a rare reference to her tumultuous history with Tom Cruise while she was being honoured with a AFI Life Achievement Award.
Kidman is fiercely private when it comes to her children, both those she shares with her husband Keith Urban and her eldest children, Connor and Isabella, who she shares with Tom Cruise.
Kidman and Cruise adopted Isabella in 1992 and Connor in 1995. During their divorce in 2001, they shared joint custody. At the time, it was reported he children were “loyal to their father” due to their connection to Scientology, and decided to live with him.
It’s unknown how close a relationship the two children share with Kidman, however they failed to make an appearance at their mother’s AFI event, despite reports claiming she had “hoped” they’d be there.
During her speech, Kidman didn’t appear to make mention of Connor and Isabella, but referred to her daughters with Urban as “the loves of my life”.
Cruise, however, did get an apparent shout-out during her speech.
Kidman spoke of working with actors and learning from them, saying: “Some of them you may never meet again and some of them you do meet again. Some of them you have incredible laughter and jokes with, and you cry with; some of them you fall in love with, some of them you marry.”
Kidman and Cruise met while working on the 1989 film Days of Thunder and married in 1990.
Kidman last spoke of the children she shares with Cruise during an interview back in 2017.

“They are adults. They are able to make their own decisions. They have made choices to be Scientologists and, as a mother, it’s my job to love them,” she explained.
She went on to insist that she offers them “unconditional love” despite their links with Scientology and their father, Cruise.
“And I am an example of that tolerance and that’s what I believe – that no matter what your child does, the child has love and the child has to know there is available love, and I’m open here. I think that’s so important, because if that is taken away from a child, to sever that in any child, in any relationship, in any family – I believe it’s wrong. So that’s our job as a parent, to always offer unconditional love.”

Nicole Kidman’s Family Guide: Meet Her Children With Keith Urban and Tom Cruise
- Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below
Nicole Kidman ’s greatest role isn’t on the big or small screen. Instead, it’s being the best mom possible to her four children.
“I just always wanted a child,” Nicole, 56, told Vogue Australia in December 2017. “I think from a very early age, I wanted a child. I knew that I was going to have a child and that it didn’t matter [how], I actually didn’t know if I was ever going to give birth to a child. So that was the least of it for me. And what I did first was adopt.”
In 1993, the Big Little Lies actress became a mom for the first time when she and her first husband Tom Cruise adopted their daughter, Bella. A few years later, the pair adopted son Connor into their family.
After the couple divorced in 2001, Kidman went on to find love with country singer and fellow Australian Keith Urban . The pair married in 2016 and welcomed daughters Sunday and Faith.
Tom Cruise’s Dating History Through the Years: Nicole Kidman, Katie Holmes and More
“If it were the choice between my family and Keith, and my career, I wouldn’t even bat an eyelid,” she told The Australia Women’s Weekly in June 2014. “The most important things to me are the love of our relationship and my children. At this stage of my life, and with time being so precious, the joy I get from us as a family outweighs any joy in any other area of my life, by far.”
Keep scrolling to learn more about the members of Kidman’s family:
Bella Kidman Cruise, 31
Tom, 61, and Nicole adopted daughter Bella shortly after her birth in December 1992.
"From the minute Tom and I were married, I wanted to have babies," Nicole told Vanity Fair in 2007. "And we lost a baby early on, so that was really very traumatic. And that's when we would adopt [our daughter] Bella."
While she was raised outside of the spotlight, Bella graduated from West London's Delmar Academy of Make-up and Hair, before transitioning to a career in fashion.
Although Bella has an active Instagram , followers shouldn’t expect her to share family moments. Instead, it’s primarily dedicated to her art.
“Her go-to medium was pen and paper for most of her life,” her website states . “However, she is now venturing into other formats and mediums. Including digital. Which has been a bit of a game changer in her opinion. We hope you dig it.”
Connor Cruise, 29
Nicole and Tom, who wed in 1990, adopted their second child just after his birth in January 1995. In 2008, Connor got a glimpse of the Hollywood spotlight when he starred alongside Will Smith in the drama Seven Pounds . As a teenager, he briefly explored DJ gigs and released a single before making Florida his home.
Although Nicole and Tom divorced six years after their wedding, the actress expressed gratitude for the relationship and the family they created. "I got married really fast and really young," she told Who Magazine in 2012. "But I don't regret that because it got me Bella and Connor and I did have a fantastic marriage for a long period."
According to People , Connor currently resides in the Sunshine State where he fishes and focuses on his barbecuing business, Connor's Meatshack. "Connor has a pretty simple life in Clearwater," a source told the publication. "He lives in his own home in a Scientology community. His life is deep-sea fishing. He has a lot of friends and seems very well-liked."
Sunday Rose Kidman Urban, 15
Named in honor of the Australian patron of the arts, Sunday Reed, Sunday was born in July 2008 and spent much of her childhood with parents Nicole and Keith, 56, in Tennessee. "My daughters are Nashvillians! They have a southern drawl," Nicole told People in 2016. "They have some Aussie. They have an unusual mix. They're hybrids."
Nicole has dropped hints that Sunday is interested in following in mom’s footsteps. In addition to showing an interest in directing, she’s also participated in theater.
"My daughter just got cast in her school play," Nicole told E! News in January 2017. "So, that's been the main priority, learning lines with her."
Celebrities Who Secretly Welcomed Children: Scarlett Johansson, Kylie Jenner and More
And for those who wanted a season 3 of Big Little Lies , Sunday may be responsible for making it possible.
“She has a very good understanding of things and life, so she was hand-held through it,” Nicole revealed to Vogue Australia in January 2024. “She was like, ‘No. There’s no more discussion. The third series has to happen … I’m sick of the talk. Sick of circling it. Just get it done.’”
Faith Margaret Kidman Urban, 13
In December 2010, Nicole and Keith surprised fans when they welcomed Faith via gestational surrogate.
It wasn’t until April 2024, however, when Faith and her older sister made their red carpet debut at the AFI Life Achievement Award Gala, where their mom was the evening's honoree.
In an interview with Today , Nicole expressed hopes that she was raising her daughters to be outspoken and strong. “So much is stepping aside and letting them become who they are,” she explained. “I don’t know if I’m teaching that as much as giving them their voices. I let them negotiate so they get a sense of who they are and what they can achieve and accomplish.”

What’s causing the catastrophic rainfall in Kenya?
- Show more sharing options
- Copy Link URL Copied!
The torrential rains and deadly floods that have hit Kenya since March have been some of the most catastrophic in the country in recent years.
At least 169 people have died due to the heavy rains, with at least 91 missing, according to the latest government figures.
In the most tragic single event, at least 48 people were killed on Monday after water blew through a blocked river tunnel under a railway line in southwestern Kenya, causing a flash flood. The rain has displaced more than 190,000 people and damaged roads and other infrastructure.
The devastating rains are a result of a mix of factors, including the country’s seasonal weather patterns, human-caused climate change as well as natural weather phenomena.
Here’s how they combined to create the deadly deluge.
WHAT IS KENYA’S ‘LONG RAINS’ SEASON? Kenya and some other parts of eastern Africa have two main rainfall periods : the “long rains” season of March to May, and the “short rains” season of October to December.
The “long rains” season is when most of the country’s average annual rainfall occurs. It’s often characterized by torrential rains, and sometimes goes up to June.
In its forecast for this year’s “long rains” season, the Kenya Meteorological Department predicted above-average rainfall in many parts of the country, with occasional storms in some. It also warned of flash floods, landslides, mudslides and other impacts.
Last year’s “short rains” season was characterized by severe storms in many parts of the country, particularly in November. Lamu, Mombasa and Garissa counties received nearly three times their long-term average rainfall, according to the meteorological department .
WHY IS THE RAIN SO INTENSE THIS TIME? The frequency, patterns and intensity of rainfall in Kenya are influenced by naturally occurring climate systems like the Indian Ocean Dipole.
The Indian Ocean Dipole is a swinging of sea surface temperatures that makes the western Indian Ocean warmer than average then colder than average than those of the eastern Indian Ocean. It has positive, neutral and negative phases.
The positive phase causes heavy rainfall in areas west of the Indian Ocean, such as Kenya, and droughts in Indonesia and Australia.
While many people have linked the current floods to the naturally occurring El Nino weather phenomenon, research shows that the climate event has little influence on rainfall over East Africa during the “long rains” season, said Joyce Kimutai, research associate at Imperial College London.
El Nino is the warming of the ocean over the Pacific Ocean, which changes the routes for storms and it can cause heavy rainfall in some parts of the world and droughts in others.
But in Kenya’s case, it’s highly likely that the positive Indian Ocean Dipole and climate change explain the ongoing flood-inducing rainfall, she said.
Warmer oceans caused by the hotter atmosphere increase evaporation, and air holding more moisture can produce more intense rainfall.
In an analysis in December last year, Kimutai and colleagues from World Weather Attribution, a group of scientists that analyze whether climate change played a role in extreme weather, found that human-caused climate change had made last year’s “short rains” season in Kenya and other parts of eastern Africa up to two times more intense.
WHEN WILL THE ‘LONG RAINS’ END? It’s become difficult to predict long-term weather in Kenya in recent years, as the onset and duration of dry and wet seasons increasingly change.
The Kenya Meteorological Department expects the “long rains” season to continue into June.
In its latest seven-day weather forecast , which it released on Monday, the department said it expects rainfall to continue in several parts of the country, with heavy downpour likely to occur in six regions, as well as flooding in low-lying areas and landslides in steep slopes.
