Once upon a time, the borough was a humble farmland. It transformed into residential property following the American Revolutionary War and became a city in 1834. In 1898, Brooklyn officially became a part of New York City.

Not all parts of NYC have held onto a grizzled, gritty exterior. The borough of Brooklyn continues to delight people from all walks of life for being family-friendly and picturesque. Brooklyn maintains a strong eclectic vibe, boasting world-class museums, parks, libraries, and architectural gems dating back centuries.

There are plenty of beautiful spaces to explore via walking, biking, and riding scooters that are teeming with history and a rich background story.

How To Get Around Brooklyn

Thankfully, Brooklyn is pretty spread out and has a more laid-back vibe than the noisier, busier, crowded borough of Manhattan.

Finding street parking isn't as challenging, and the borough has a colorful patchwork of diverse neighborhoods to enjoy. Feel free to rent a bike or scooter from outposts throughout the city or grab a Metrocard and hop on the MTA for a visit.

If you are taking the train from Manhattan, you can jump on the 2, 3, 4, 5, A, C, N, Q, or other lines, depending on where you are heading in Brooklyn.

The Atlantic Avenue- Barclays Center is a major stop and hub in Brooklyn connecting multiple train lines, including the Long Island Rail Road, if you are feeling adventurous. Make sure to snag a picture of the transit map for the MTA while aboard a subway car or ask for an old-school map at a station kiosk window.

Once you map out where you want to go in the borough of Brooklyn, you can get around easily via bike, bus, walking, or cab. Locals are happy to give you directions if you are lost.

And be sure to visit suggested places to grab a book, art, coffee, a bite to eat, or relax. If you can, plan to see Brooklyn when there are farmer's markets up and running for fresh produce, local artists' offerings, jewelry, and live music.

Located in downtown Brooklyn, this elegant municipal building in the Greek Revival style was erected in 1848. It was designed by architects Calvin Pollard and Gamaliel King, and it is Brooklyn's oldest public building . Get to see another side of NYC when you venture across the Manhattan Bridge connecting the DUMBO neighborhood to Canal Street in Lower Manhattan.

You get terrific, intimate views of rooftops, the East River, and the changing landscape as you move from Brooklyn into "the city."

If you love shopping high-end boutiques or dining on the finest of fare in Brooklyn, stop in the DUMBO neighborhood. DUMBO stands for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, and it is not to be missed.

There are cobblestone streets and old warehouses now featuring trendy retail spaces, and you may even stumble on an active shoot for a film or commercial.

There are also performance and gallery spaces to sate your desire for big-city arts and creativity.

8. Soldiers And Sailors Memorial Arch

NYC is steeped in a rich military, naval, and commerce history built off of the waterways. The Soldier's And Sailors' Arch was built between 1889 and 1892, steps away from the Grand Army Plaza stop off the two and X line. The monument was dedicated "To the Defenders of The Union, 1861-1865."

The architect was John H. Duncan, and the sculptors were Frederick MacMonnies and Phillip Martiny. Nearby this beautiful arch is a roundabout and a monument to West Point graduate and military engineer Gouverneur Warren.

9. Prospect Park

Step into Prospect Park , sandwiched between the Flatbush and Park Slope neighborhoods, and you may not believe that you haven't left NYC. The design of this park is so amazing; it's hard to think it isn't natural to the area but was constructed for the borough.

Within this grand flagship park's 526 acres, there is an ice rink, zoo, carousel, bandshell, boathouse, bridges, and plenty of paths to jog, walk, or bike.

Meander along its pathways, and you can always manage to stumble on something new and exciting. Don't forget to come to the park to check out seasonal farmer's markets, artisans, crafts, and live entertainment on weekends.

10. The Lefferts Historic House

Step back into the 18th century with a visit to the Lefferts Historic House and Museum.

The building was under construction on my visit. However, the location showcases historical artifacts from the past and tells the stories of the original Lenape residents of Brooklyn and NYC, enslaved Africans, and Dutch settlers.

11. Brooklyn Central Library

Support the power of literacy and check out the sixteenth-largest public library in the country. The Brooklyn Public Library system was established in 1866 and has over 5 million items in its collection.

The Central Library for Brooklyn is wrapped in a limestone exterior with a detailed, gilded Art Deco entry portico designed by sculptors Carl P. Jennewein and Thomas Hudson Jones.

12. Brooklyn Botanic Garden

Brooklyn has a lot of green spaces, providing a respite from the urban sprawl of concrete, brick, and steel in the city. The Brooklyn Botanic Garden was founded in 1910 and sits atop the land of the Lenape , New York's original indigenous inhabitants .

As an oasis for the surrounding community and visitors, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden offers programs for children, urban gardening, and other educational opportunities. The garden is steps away from Prospect Park and consists of 52 acres.

13. Brooklyn Museum

The Brooklyn Museum is one of the largest and oldest of its kind in New York City and the country. The institution features 560,000 square feet of space filled with fascinating artifacts and rotating exhibits. 

Founded in 1895, the museum was initially supposed to be the largest art museum worldwide. Today, it contains over 1.5 million artworks.

14. Coney Island

Take a walk on the wild side and take a long trip via the subway down to Coney Island . It has maintained itself as a summer destination for New Yorkers for over 150 years and is still going strong.

Come during warmer weather when the boardwalk is buzzing with activity, or visit on an off-day and season for fewer crowds. Plan a day at the beach to make sandcastles or catch the sun and surf.

Get in touch with your inner child and take a ride on the famous wooden Cyclone roller coaster. At Luna Park , you can ride the Wonder Wheel after grabbing a hot dog at Nathan's Famous.

Coney Island may be a residential neighborhood by the seaside. However, locals and visitors still look forward to the annual Mermaid Parade , Circus Sideshow performers, and the smell of funnel cake and cotton candy in the air.

Not too far from the amusement park attractions lies the NY Aquarium , another crowd favorite.

Visit the Brooklyn Historical Society in Brooklyn Heights to learn more about this remarkable borough and its people, as well as contemporary cultural and social events and issues.

The Society is housed in an 1881 building designed by architect George B. Post. The National Historic Landmark is noted for its rich terra cotta color and detailing. The landmarked interior library holds an impressive collection of materials, and features elaborately carved woodwork, original furnishings and stained-glass windows.

Our 1st day we concentrated on the many iconic sights of Midtown Manhattan, including inside the Empire State Building, NY City Library, Grand Central, Rockefeller Center, and many more including hidden gems along the way – all fantastic!!!

JACKSON, MI – Explore the galleries and exhibits at the Ella Sharp Museum, see Michigan’s military history and learn about Jackson County’s pioneer roots all for free during one day in May.

It’s time for the popular Free Museum Day in Jackson County, where around 10 museums open their doors to the public for free. The 2024 event is 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 11. Each museum will host an open-house style reception with self-guided tours, child-friendly activities and historical demonstrations, according to Experience Jackson, which coordinates the event.

The pair discuss Murakami’s new series of fantastical paintings that respond to Utagawa Hiroshige’s 100 Famous Views of Edo , a Brooklyn Museum treasure that is on view for the first time in 24 years. Cummins and Murakami reflect on Hiroshige’s art-historical impact and the artist’s role as a witness to environmental and social change.

In Brooklyn, an Italianate Townhouse Delivers a New Spin on an Old Classic

The two designers’ inspiration? Yves Saint Laurent’s office.

Dolkas and Michelle Ficker , who cofounded Studio Dorion in 2020, met and became close while desk mates at the firm of ELLE DECOR A-List designer Billy Cotton . It was during that period that they were introduced to the homeowners of this Brooklyn brownstone and worked alongside Cotton with a mandate to “improve on empty.” Five years later Dolkas and Ficker came back under their own steam to put a new spin on its interiors.

A Bay Area native, Dolkas studied costume design before going into prop styling in New York City, with a brief interlude back in San Francisco as a junior designer at a local firm. He went on to complete his master’s at Sotheby’s Institute of Art in London. Ficker, who grew up in Colorado, moved to the East Coast to study at the New York School of Interior Design, working at that time for David Kleinberg and later with Peter Pennoyer. Dolkas and Ficker “both have a passion for furniture and for objects, and for how people could live with them,” Cotton says. “It’s amazing to see them use those tools in their own work and create their own vision.”

The client, who works as a consultant, lives with her husband and their two teenage sons. She first hired Studio Dorion to complete a gut renovation of a barn on her property in Litchfield, Connecticut, turning it into a guesthouse. Thrilled with the results, she called them back to revisit the brownstone with an eye toward “warming things up.” The four-bedroom, Italianate-style townhouse, built in 1901, required a light but knowledgeable hand. Studio Dorion’s vision took shape in spurts over the course of several years, starting with the untouched primary bathroom, which was overhauled. The adjoining primary bedroom, featuring a bed designed by Ficker, was revamped with a wall artwork by Marley Freeman and a 1950s Scandinavian modern armchair upholstered in a Holland & Sherry wool.

On the parlor floor, the living and dining areas were reimagined for flow and functionality: The chimney breast was clad in mirror to bring light deeper into the room; the dining table now has leaves; the living room sofas , previously upholstered in a white silk bouclé, are currently—following a tragic chocolate incident that the client admits was her fault—in a darker mohair velvet. “I couldn’t get it out,” she says. “I was like, this is a sign.”

The ground-floor media room is a space where the kids can relax with their friends; it manages with aplomb the uneasy union of art, design, and teenagers. Outfitted in an espresso cork wallcovering , it features a large Room & Board sectional and a custom ottoman upholstered in a vintage Tibetan blanket. “Our little one—who’s the tallest of us all—we still call him the puppy,” the client says. “And he hasn’t grown into his paws, so we’re always a little at risk.”

An adjacent office was a necessary addition for the client, who primarily works from home. Its walls and ceiling are paneled in a cork flooring material to mirror the den. “We showed her a photo of Yves Saint Laurent’s office in Paris that has a big cork wall that he pinned things to,” Dolkas says. “That was our sort of gateway to get her excited about the idea, but it didn’t take much convincing.”

The home’s extensive art assemblage was curated over years of acquisitions from auctions, shopping trips in upstate New York, and with help from Brendan Dugan of Karma gallery , whom the client met through her children’s school. Notable pieces in the collection include works by Alex Katz, Franz Kline, Paul Lee, and Andrea Blum. “Beautiful things just have meaning to me,” the client says. “They’re part of what feels like home.” Like many a great story, this one is ongoing: Dolkas and Ficker recently finished a tennis pavilion and a screened-in sunroom at the Connecticut home and are eager to see what else is on the agenda. “She jokes about the next project being a beach house,” Ficker says. “So we’re waiting for that call.”
