Into the Heart of Africa

“ K aribu ! Welcome to the Serengeti!” the pilot bellows after he cuts the twin prop’s engines. He opens the plane doors, letting in the hot scent of desert sage. The smell is intoxicating—one that sparks excitement for travellers new to Africa and recalls for veterans the reasons they continue to return. Seeing Africa from above does little to prepare you for immersion in the Serengeti National Park, a UNESCO-inscribed game reserve jointly managed by Kenya and Tanzania. The Serengeti is the Africa of The Lion King , of Karen Blixen and Hemingway. It’s the home of graceful Maasai warriors and the fierce Big Five—lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos and buffaloes—not to mention crocodiles, hippos, cheetahs and baboons.

It’s also home to hundreds of colourful and lesser-known species such as lilac-breasted rollers, intricately marbled Charaxes butterflies and umbrella thorn acacia trees, which provide some shady respite from the sun-scorched landscape. To put it another way, there are more than 70 species of large mammals and more than 500 types of birds found among these riverine forests, swamps, rocky kopjes and grasslands. And while staying at Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti, one of the few properties located entirely within the Serengeti National Park, you can see them all.

Discover the Serengeti

Adventure begins at the Discovery Centre, where wildlife research programmes, cultural exhibitions and educational activities unravel the mysteries of Tanzania’s vast wilderness.

Artefacts at the Four Seasons Safari Lodge, Serengeti Discovery Center

I n the Serengeti, opportunities for wildlife viewing present even before the day begins, and setting out on safari—either by Jeep or hot-air balloon—quickly becomes a form of extreme game chasing. The Discovery Centre at Four Seasons, the region’s first lodge-based conservation research and education facility, brings these dynamic interactions with wildlife into high-definition perspective.

“The aim of the Discovery Centre is to help our guests understand the intricate interactions that are going on in the bush all around them—both large and small,” says Oliver Dreike, the Discovery Centre Manager. Follow the course of the Great Migration with a 3-D interactive map of the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem, track night-time movements of nocturnal predators with state-of-the-art camera equipment and embark on a guided tour with a member of the local Maasai or Ikoma tribe.

“The Discovery Centre showcases more than half a century of Serengeti wildlife research,” says Dreike. He and other centre staff also manage the Lodge’s Kijana Klub activities. Kijana means “youth” in Swahili, and the programmes appeal to the wide-eyed eagerness for knowledge that most young guests arrive with. “Kids love setting up remote camera traps,” says Dreike. “They set them up outside their rooms, and then tune in to see what creatures walked past during the night.”

What our guests say about Jayson

April 2, 2024
Amazing tip from Jayson
A few years ago we had Jayson deal with a Safari tour we wanted arranged for our parents and so started our first contact with Safari.com and Jayson. Since our parents were so very pleased with their experience, we immediately thought of Jayson when my partner and myself stated planning a trip to Africa. Jayson remembered us from almost 4 years ago, which I think is rather outstanding. We booked a three night stay, on Jaysons recomendation, at the Wallow Lodge, which proved to be a wonerful experience. Apart from the lodge being everything you could possibly imagine, it was the staff that made our stay a wonderful experience. We would most certainly recommend the wallow Lodge should we hear of freinds wishing to visit the Victoria Falls. Thanks gos to safari.com, Jayson for organizing our trip and the wonderful staff of the Wallow Lodge at the Victoria Falls. Kindest Regards, Kristof

A superb experience
Dear Jayson, You are a star. The very professional pieces of advice and the optimal design of the schedule that turned our holidays into an extraordinary experience. Thank you so much! Leopard Hills are indeed the boutique luxury camp that you recommended. People there are incredible friendly and knowledgable. The guide was excellent. And the cook, she was a friendly star too. The flight connections went well, despite that rather long drive, and the very early morning start. Wake up calls at 4 AM should be forbidden :) Mauritius was great, Club Med The Plantation Albion was the perfect choice. (The other Club Med @ Cannonier we visited only and were glad we didn’t chose that one…) Thank you again for the superb organisation.

First organized trip to Africa.
Booking an entire trip is a new experience for us. Our first contact with Shamiel was pleasant and wanted to know what we wanted out of the entire experience. As the planning moved forward Shamiel brought in Jayson to assist. As they listened to what we wanted and our concerns they brought together a package for us. Both we always accessible and extremely interested to provide us with a great experience.

Anja is awesome!
Anja is awesome!! She went above and beyond for me as I had several changes until I locked in my bucket list itinerary and then my friend cancelled. She wasn't mad and just went about cancelling her portion which saved me money in the long run. Anja is a true professional regardless and I have been dealing with her since Sept 2023. Cannot wait until my trip in Sept 2024.

Shann was beyond amazing
Shann was beyond amazing. Listened to our needs, communicated super-efficiently and gave really honest excellent advice. She was so patient, kind and professional. The time difference across the globe made no difference. I am so excited for the itinerary she has put together. I usually cobble my own itinerary together for our holidays and it’s so time consuming and hard work. This was a piece of cake! Thank you Shann.
Great planning and service
Great planning and service, and everything worked like clockwork. We booked an Inyari Lodge safari with air with Safari.com. it wasn't clear if there will be 2 or three of us, so with Candis' help we booked a family chalet for 2 and added the third later when it was confirmed he can come. Candis put us on flights that maximized our game drive time (unlike some of the other guests) so we got all 6 drives in 3 nights. The lodge was great. Especially the game drives. We saw more than we hoped for. Additionally, Safari.com's insurance was very competitive. Highly recommended.

BEST OF THE SERENGETI WITH THE FOUR SEASONS: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SAFARIS BEFORE YOU GO

by Lee Litumbe in My Travels

Spiritedpursuit_leelitumbe-29-2.jpg

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to go on safari and see the most beautiful wild animals out in their natural element? If you’ve ever watched National Geographic, I’m sure you’ve seen some of the incredible wildlife that African safaris have to offer.

I’ve been lucky to experience a few game drives in my life, but was particularly excited to have the opportunity to experience one with the Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti. Nestled in the heart of Serengeti National Park, the Lodge is surrounded by nothing but wide-open plains, with the promise to get up close and personal with lions, elephants, zebras, buffaloes, crocodiles and more during once-in-a-lifetime excursions in the best-known wildlife sanctuary in the world. What more can you ask for? And while the experience is absolutely unlike any other, rather than spend this post telling you how incredible and luxurious the experience was in 10 different ways (which it was), I’d rather give you some practical tips that will help you plan and prepare for your own trip here.

four seasons south africa safari

A FEW THINGS TO KNOW

Best time to go : For a general game experience, June to October is best but for the Wildebeest migration November-August is ideal.

Make sure you have your visas and vaccines . As with any destination you’re going to, make sure that all your visas and vaccines sorted out ahead of time. Don’t wait until the last minute to handle this or you’ll end up disappointed when you’re not allowed to board the plane to your destination. Tanzania offers visas on arrival (check your home country on their list to verify your home country is qualified), but you likely will not be allowed to board to the country without showing at least your yellow fever card if traveling from certain regions.

Check the luggage requirements and baggage allowances before you go. You will need to take a connecting flight on a small plane while en route from Nairobi or Kilimanjaro into the Serengeti, so be sure to triple check your luggage and baggage allowance. You will likely only be allowed allowed only 15 kgs / 33 lbs (including hand luggage), so be sure to pack as light as possible. I made the mistake of not only overpacking for the trip but also bringing it all in my hard-shell suitcases. I rarely ever use soft-sided cases anymore, but would highly recommend one of those or just a simple duffel bag instead for this kind of trip.

Bring the best camera lenses & equipment you have . Be sure to bring the very best camera and lenses you can afford/have available to you for this kind of trip; 200mm is minimum (most of the wildlife photos in this post were taken on a 600 mm lens). To be honest, there is no way you will be able to capture great photos from just a smartphone since the animals move quick and can be quite far in the distance. Pack an extra memory card or two and always have extra batteries and charge them every time you can. One of the great things about staying at the Four Seasons Serengeti was that they have a camera center where they rent out amazing equipment to guests. We ended up using one of their tele lenses which completely transformed our experience and allowed us to get super close up shots of rare moments like a leopard hanging in a tree and a cheetah with her three cubs.

Spiritedpursuit_leelitumbe-44.jpg

A FEW THINGS TO KNOW CONT’D

You’ll start early . Most of the animals are active at night or just before sunrise (cooler temps make it more comfortable for them), so this means that you can expect some very early starts to your safari game drives. Our first drive drive began between 5:30 and 6 a.m. (we had a quick & deelish breakfast before), so we also got to see a beautiful sunrise on our ride.

Dress Comfortably. While there is honestly no dress code for a driven safari (you don’t need to wear khaki or light brown clothing but avoid dark blue and black as they attract tsetse flies), I would highly recommend you bring along neutrals and clothing that can be layered. Something I wasn’t aware of on my first ever safari was how COLD it can be in the bush before sunrise and after sunset. It can also get very hot well after sunset, so make sure you are prepared for both. For shoes, definitely go for closed toe shoes (sneakers, boots, etc) or your feet will be freezing cold in the open truck in the morning or evening. In a worst case scenario, the Four Seasons will provide a warm blanket and drive you in the truck with a retractable roof, so don’t be afraid to ask your driver for help if you get cold.

Take every opportunity you have to go on a game drive . Because you’re not guaranteed to see anything, make sure to take advantage of every game drive available on your trip. Do not skip out on any of the drives (even the early morning ones) because you never know what you’ll miss. No two game drives will ever be the same since you're dealing with wild animals in a non-controlled environment, so make the most of every situation. For instance, we were blown away by how many elephants and lions we saw on our ride from the airport to the Four Seasons property. Even though we had been traveling for over 24 hours at that point and were so exhausted, we still whipped out our cameras and took it all in. And I’m so glad we did, because that was the only time we were that close up to so many elephants.

Hot Air Balloon Safari. Can you imagine a better way to take in the stunning Serengeti landscape than from the air? Something I would have loved to do but didn’t have the time to was a hot air balloon ride. The Four Seasons offer an hour-long, sunrise, hot-air balloon flight over the savannah, followed by a Champagne breakfast in the bush - definitely do this if you can!

Guided Driven Safari. This is the real highly of your trip. An expert driver guides on a morning or afternoon safari (you have the option to do a half day or a full day safari) and your guide will take you in search of the many fascinating creatures that inhabit the Serengeti. We were able to spot everything from lions after a fresh kill. leopard lazily lounging in tree (very rare as they’re shy), hippos fighting in the river, to a cheetah and her three cubs casually crossing over the savannah. Such an epic experience with the FS team.

Sunset Kopje Nature walk and meditation. A real treat and highlight for me was this signature yogic experience. We followed a Maasai trail to our sunset kopje (hilltop), where we were surrounded panoramic views over the plains provide the backdrop for a magical guided meditation. So surreal.

A Walking Safari . Another one of my highlights of my time here was the walking safari. I was initially very intimidated and scared but ended up very impressed and felt very safe the entire time. We saw hyenas feasting on a fresh carcass, lions in the horizon (ok, this one was super intimidating), vultures circling and fighting off hyenas on another carcass, and the skull and horns of a wildebeest (watch here , it was crazy). It was also incredible to see how well the guides were able to point out different tracks, spot different kinds of species by their feces, and spot the smallest reed frog hiding in the grass. Their knowledge of the region and its wildlife made the experience that much more enjoyable. It was also a huge relief to have a ranger armed with what looked like an AK47 guarding us at all times.

THINGS TO DO CONT’D

Enjoy a Bush Breakfast. After our 1.5 hour safari walk, we were driven a short distance to a stunning setting to have a quiet and serene breakfast out in the bush. It was a great way to unwind after the excitement of all we saw during the walk in a great (well guarded) setting. Highly recommend doing this or a sundowner if you prefer sunset.

Relax & swim at the Four Seasons Waterhole. Something I was really looking forward to ahead of my trip here, was spending some time at the incredible infinity pool at the property. Not only because the view was absolutely incredible, but because there is also water hole just behind it. I willed and wished and hoped and prayed I’d be lucky enough to have some wild elephants stop by like I’d seen in some pictures online , but unfortunately for me, nature is not so predictable. During the dry season, they have a lot less options for water so they come by pretty frequently to cool off, but I was there after some rains, so they didn’t have a real need to stop by.

Watch a traditional Maasai Ceremonial Dance . Another great experience I had that I highly recommend is going attending one of the traditional dance ceremonies the Maasai warriors out on. Typically done when celebrating special moments (a boy becoming a man, weddings, etc), it felt special to learn a bit more about the culture of the people local to the region. It’s something that I can only describe as enchanting.

what not to do

Stress about what animals you may/may not see . Every safari drive is unique and unpredictable, so there’s no need to stress about which game you may or may not see. There will be times where you won’t see much of anything, times when you’ll see some exciting and amazing things like a fresh lion kill, times when the ride takes longer than you expected and times when the roads are much more bumpy than you can handle. Just be mentally prepared to enjoy the experience and take it all in. Ask the driver/guide to stop when you see something you’re curious about, ask loads of questions, and take as many pictures as you’d like. Though I’d avoid taking 500 pictures of the same zebra; it will be a pain to sort through later. Be prepared for mosquitoes and flies (they follow the animals), and mostly for a potentially rough ride. While most of the time you will be driving on gravel or sand roads, there’s a chance the the driver might decide to cross a river, or through the bush.

Ignore your guide and ranger . Don’t forget that you are out in nature and dealing with WILD animals. Be sure to obey all the rules and  stay safe . The rules are there for your own safety, so don’t put yourself at risk. There will be times when your driver will allow you to get out of your car, when they deem it appropriate, but know that animals can be very well camouflaged and you often wont see them until it’s too late. Don’t approach elephants too closely, don’t make a lot of noise, keep your hands and your camera inside the car at all times when near the big cats, and be aware that hippos are very aggressive and the most dangerous African animals (most assume it’s the lions).

Review of Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti

four seasons south africa safari

With Tanzania being one of the best countries to experience an authentic African safari, where better to head for than the luxuriously appointed Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti. This hotel located in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Serengeti National Park. With 77 rooms in total breaking down into 60 guest rooms, twelve suites and five freestanding villas, the property is styled with a contemporary African design, centred around a two-story great house .

There are three dining options including Kula’s Restaurant for an African inspired and international menu, the Boma Grill for a taste of Africa around an open firepit and the Maji Bar for cocktails and tapas. This being Four Seasons, custom dining arrangements can also be arranged for a torchlit wilderness dinner in the bush protected by Maasai warriors or in-room dining from a tailored menu. Recreation wise, there is the full-service Serengeti Kani Spa with six freestanding treatment rooms, a freeform outdoor infinity pool overlooking an active watering hole frequented by elephants and a fully equipped 72 square metre fitness facility offering yoga, fitness and meditation classes. There are also two boutiques for souvenirs and forgotten essentials, a Games Room, Library and a guide service. The Kijana Klub meanwhile welcomes children and teens with a range of activities whilst there is also an interactive Discovery Centre which is part museum with exhibits and a lecture hall for everyone to learn more about the local wildlife, environment and culture.

Activities are numerous and include on site birdwatching, wildlife observation and walking safaris whilst off site, enjoy similar activities within all-terrain vehicle excursions or even a hot-air balloon expedition.

With a central location in the Serengeti National Park, an area of around 15,000 square kilometres of space, this is where the so-called Big Five still roam freely across the savannah – the lion, the leopard, the buffalo, the elephant, and the rhinoceros – alongside wildebeest, zebras, gazelles, elands and over 500 species of birdlife. Even better, Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti has been ingeniously constructed on a series of raised platforms and walkways next to an animal watering hole where elephants come to quench their thirst.

The Serengeti National Park was one of the first to be recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site back in 1981, being among those proposed earlier in 1972. It had already been given Protected Area Status in 1940, becoming a National Park in 1951. Whilst protected, it is unfenced unlike other parks, allowing animals the freedom to roam across the savannah and neighbouring country’s borders.

Located in the wide-open plains of Central Serengeti, Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti is just a 45-minute transfer from the Seronera Airstrip (SEU) with connecting flights coming from three airports within Tanzania – the domestic Arusha Airport (ARK), Julius Nyerere International in Dar es Salaam (DAR) and Kilimanjaro International (JRO).

For the local airlines, there is a luggage weight restriction of 15 kilograms per passenger and these must be soft-sided bags rather than hard shell suitcases. There is also the option of charter flights that impose no such restrictions and which can land at Seronera Airstrip within daylight hours.

Four Seasons has prepared a handy “Before you go” document with instructions about what to wear, what to bring and how to stay healthy as well as handy tips – well worth a read.

Where better to relax after a day’s safari than at the full-service Serengeti Kani Spa with its six freestanding treatment pavilions for single or couple occupancy, all featuring private steam showers and outdoor bathtubs. As one might expect, the treatment menus are inspired by Africa and include among other things, a Tree of Life Journey, Kifa Massages, Earth Energies Exfoliations, Flora Facials and Ancestral Rituals. The inviting freeform outdoor infinity pool is also extremely popular for cooling off from the heat of the day. It overlooks the animal watering hole often visited by a family of elephants for a unique perspective on these magnificent beasts.

The Lodge’s Discovery Centre serves as both a lecture theatre where guests can watch some of the best wildlife documentaries and an interactive museum where the Great Migration can be studied alongside other exhibits to learn more about the local wildlife, environment and culture. There are several experts on hand to explain more about the conservation work being undertaken and the region in general including a Lodge Naturalist, local wildlife experts, a photographer in residence for vital snapping tips and Maasai warriors. There are several wildlife research projects being undertaken, promoted via the Centre including a Cheetah Watch where guests may submit their cheetah photos to the Serengeti Cheetah Project to help monitor these elusive animals in the Serengeti. Guests may also help The Serengeti Lion Project, via the Snapshot Serengeti website, classify the different animals caught in the more than 200 remote camera traps on the tundra.

The Kijana Klub welcomes children and teens of all ages in a separate space just within the Lodge’s main building. Kiddies will be shown how to explore the African bush safely by spending some time with a Maasai guide, can plant trees or even partake in cookery classes. The complimentary brand programme, Kids for All Seasons, aims to educate the young about Africa with activities taking place in the surrounding environment. The Klub itself has an arts and crafts section; a foosball table; a selection of board games; DVDs; a small library and a gaming section with Xbox 360 and Wii. Other activities include Kids Yoga, film nights, Swahili language lessons, nature walks along the walkways and interaction with the local Maasai.

There are two boutiques for souvenirs and forgotten essentials, a Games Room, Library and a guide service.

There are three dining options including Kula’s Restaurant for an African inspired and international menu, the Boma Grill for a taste of Africa around an open firepit and the Maji Bar for cocktails and tapas.

With concertina windows opening out to the pool and savannah beyond, Kula’s Restaurant truly offers a meal with a view. From the plentiful morning buffet to a dinner menu of African favourites and international classics, diners may select their preferred options from live cooking stations.

Boma Grill meanwhile encircles an open-air firepit for a true taste of Africa with grilled dishes with a local twist served within a night showcasing the culture of the Maasai. Some may prefer in-room dining with a wide menu of choices available or custom experiences can be devised including the most popular torchlit barbecue dinner in the heart of the bush, a table set up in the middle of the infinity pool overlooking the animal watering hole or in the Lodge’s wine cellar, The Vineyard, where a seven-course menu accompanied by South African wines will be served.

Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti is committed to sustainability and preservation programmes through local partnerships, sustainable practices, guest education and more. They tread lightly on the planet and recognise their responsibility in minimising their impact on the environment to preserve the future of the Serengeti National Park.

Funded by a percentage of every game drive, walking safari, some boutique items and guest donations, the Discovery Centre Fund has been put in place to support community and wildlife projects in and around the area of Serengeti. For example, the brand includes long term commitments to both the Rhino Conservation Project and Frankfurt Zoological Society’s Serengeti De-snaring project to stop animal poachers. The vulnerable children in the area are not forgotten either and the fund supports a Safe House in Mugumu providing shelter to girls at risk of female genital mutilation.

Local suppliers are key and the Lodge ensures that 75% of the Lodge’s overall suppliers come from Tanzania and within the boutique, 90% of items for sale hail from Africa with 60% from Tanzania. The boutique also showcases items from Shanga Shangaa, a socially conscious for-profit enterprise that employs local people with disabilities, creating beautiful pieces from recycled glass and other items. There are also pieces of handmade beaded jewellery and accessories from Sidai Designs and Maasai Womens Development Organisation, actively supporting the Maasai community.

Providing training for the future tourism leaders in Tanzania is another aim of the fund with the Lodge offering visits and internships for talented young people from such organisations as the National College of Tourism, Serengeti Tourism College STC), IBES, The Vocational Educational and Training Authority and the College of African Wildlife Management. Since 2020, the Lodge has also offered two-year full scholarship courses for two individuals from STC.

What We Love

  • Water Hole : If you love African elephants then this is the Lodge is for you. These beautiful mammals come to drink at the Water Hole – which is below the Lodge swimming pool - every day. They are often joined by dazzles of zebras and other thirsty animals and birds.
  • Drives : Four Seasons Serengeti is a relatively big Lodge, with many vehicles travelling around the National Park. Drivers are in constant communication with each other – ensuring that if there is a pride of lions or a pack of hyenas, you WILL see them!
  • Family : Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti is just a 45-minute transfer from the Seronera Airstrip and set in the very heart of The Serengeti National Park - an area of around 15,000 square kilometres. With The Kijana Klub – for younger guests – and a Discovery Centre, the Lodge is one of the few to offer a safari experience that the whole family can enjoy. What They Love

  • Infinity Pool : Our famous infinity edge swimming pool overlooks the Lodge's animal waterhole. Someone described a great infinity pool as something that blurs the lines between man-made and the natural. This has been achieved at the Four Seasons Safari Lodge and guests frequently enjoy daily visits from the Serengeti inhabitants as they stop off for a drink while meandering through the endless plains.
  • Memories and Experiences : The Four Seasons Safari Lodge was my first stint as General Manager and I could not think of anywhere more special to have taken on this role. The team at the Lodge help guests enjoy once-in-a-lifetime experiences. There is something truly magical about this little corner of the world.
  • Community and Conservation : Four Seasons Safari Lodge is located in one of the planet’s most incredible and precious habitats. We are proud to have been recognized as an award-winning responsible tourism operator and are continually striving to play our part in protecting and preserving the future of the Serengeti National Park and all those connected to it. Four Seasons Safari Lodge: Luxury in Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park

Picture this —you’re in the middle of the a wildlife haven with nothing but an expansive savanna as far as the eye can see, and then there’s a luxury safari lodge plopped right in the middle of it all. That’d be the Four Seasons Safari Lodge, a peaceful sanctuary that is inside Serengeti National Park (it’s literally your  backyard). You may come to the hotel to be immersed in the sweeping views and natural landscapes, but you’ll want to stay for the 5-star amenities and the over the top services.

About Four Seasons Safari Lodge

There’s no doubt that the Four Seasons brand is know for being luxurious in every sense of the word, and their Serengeti safari lodge does not stray from this. Perched on elevated walkways, this place offers a unique twist to the whole safari experience, giving extravagance while incorporating the natural beauty of the land. Not only that, paying attention to the details is what the Four Seasons does best. From the sweets left on the entry table in our room to the airport pickup that included a bottle of champagne to the staff who always seemed to remember my name, they don’t miss a beat.

Book your stay at the Four Seasons Safari Lodge here .

About Serengeti National Park

Over 90,000 travelers visit Serengeti National Park and there is no doubt why; it is stunning with its seemingly endless dusty plains that are spotted with wildlife. Tanzania’s oldest and most popular national park is a place that easily earns a spot on many people’s bucket list. It is not only an UNESCO world heritage site , but also home to one of nature’s grandest spectacles—the largest migration of mammals on the planet. The annual wildebeest migration is when more than a million land animals stomp the dry-grass plains in search of greener pastures. The wildebeest don’t travel alone; hundreds of thousands of Thompson’s gazelle and zebras join them in this trek, plunging through crocodile-infested waters in their effort to escape death from hunger, thirst, and predators.

Besides the migration, the 5,695 square miles of Serengeti is blessed with an abundance of animals, plus you can pay a visit to the hippo pool where several dozen are clustered together sloshing about.

Four Seasons Serengeti Safari Options

In Swahili safari literally translates to ‘journey’, and Four Seasons Safari Lodge makes sure that this journey is not only safe but exciting too. With them, your African adventure can be done on foot, via air or by rugged vehicle.

Hot Air Balloon Safari

This crosses off two things on my bucket list —a safari and a hot air balloon ride! The stunning beauty and miles upon miles of preserved plains are an epic sight from the ground, so can you just imagine how it is from the air?  These tours start early in the morning and are usually an hour long. You’ll be mesmerized by the shades of the sky at sunrise with a flight over the savanna, and then a champagne breakfast waiting for you. Talk about luxury!

Walking Safari

I never knew you could even travel through Serengeti on foot, but you can! A walking safari is a more immersive and slower pace experience, as you can absorb every detail along the way. The walk is led by Maasai guides who not only take you to explore the wild life habitat, but also to inspect animal tracks and unique vegetation up close.

Jeep Safari

Via rugged jeep is one of the most common ways to do safari, and it’s the option me and my friend at Points and Travel chose with the lodge. We went on their half-day tour and there was no shortage of wildlife or fun. Our driver/guide took us to all the hotspots known to be loaded with animals and even made a stop to the hippo pool where you could only see the backs of about a dozen that were three-quarters of the way submerged under water.

We were also there just after the wildebeest had returned from the great migration and it was surreal to see thousands walking all in a row. I can’t tell you how many times we were stopped as they slowly crossed the road that lay before us. It was a wildebeest traffic jam!

You can see all the safari adventure options on their website .

Services and Amenities

The whole point of opting for the Four Seasons Safari Lodge instead of camping, is to enjoy the luxury services and pamper yourself on your vacation, right? Here are some of the best amenities that I thoroughly enjoyed during our stay.

Discovery Centre

The discovery centre at Four Seasons is part lecture theatre and part museum. If you want to learn about the local culture and traditions, this is the place to be. It offers an interactive experience that helps you delve deep into the history, customs and wildlife of Serengeti. It also showcases an interactive map of the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem along with the Great Migration.

Who doesn’t want some well-deserved pampering and relaxation after an adventurous day on a Serengeti safari? The spa treatments and services highlight the mystique and magical healing power of Africa with detoxifying cleanses, cleansing facials, excellent body massages and other services inspired by Serengeti’s ecology.

The location of the on-premise spa is purely a bonus. You will need to follow the elevated walkways until you reach a section of beautiful bungalows. One of those might be the locale of your massage!

Children’s Centre

There’s a lot to keep the children engaged and interested (I mean there are elephants and giraffes in their backyard!). But, they also offer fun, educational and creative entertainment for all ages at the Kijana Klub—and these aren’t your average activities. Your child can spend the morning with a Maasai warrior learning the ways of the land or take a cooking class that brings out the little chef in them. Of course, there is also the top of the line video game boxes that arre bound to keep them occupied for hours.

Infinity Pool

The outdoor dining area backs up to the infinity pool that backs up to the watering hole that backs up to Serengeti National park. That’s quite a line up that you don’t want to miss! Reserve one of your afternoons to spend within a 25 foot radius—have lunch al fresco then walk to the pool to sunbath on a lounge chair while watching the wildlife saunter by.

Did I mention that all rooms at the lodge include three meals per day (including house wines, beers and spirits)? The frosting on that cake is that the fine dining options and bar at Four Seasons Safari Lodge are exceptional.

Enjoy hearty meals at Kula’s restaurant with amazing breakfast buffets and meals prepared with traditional African flavors. Boma Grill incorporates the Maasai culture where an authentic African feast is served around an open air fire-pot in a restaurant inspired by a Maasai hut. Most nights that you dine here, you will be treated to an entertaining show. We saw some impressive Maasai dancers on one particular evening. The tone of the music was mesmerizing and meditative (or that could have been the Cabernet!). If you want to enjoy your cocktails with a delightful view in fresh air, Maji Bar and Terrace is there to serve you with a variety of drinks, homemade pizzas, delicious salads and African tapas (that’s the one that butts up to the infinity pool!).

Four Seasons Accommodations

Four Seasons Serengeti is a 77-room property with a Colonial style décor that stays true to African culture. There are several different rooms and suites, as well as villas. I can attest that the Terrace Suite was a little piece of heaven. It was a two-room suite with two full bathrooms (one with deep soaking tub), plus an outdoor shower and a private infinity pool that overlooked the park. There were impala and giraffes in our backyard!

From A to Z the room was pure luxury—from the bath products to the picture perfect view to the soft pillows. After a long day on safari it is a blissful retreat. Just make sure to lock your doors or a baboon may find their way in to steal your fruit platter!

To sum it up, the Four Seasons Safari Lodge has a breathtaking setting with amazing views with services and safari options to make your time in Serengeti even more memorable.

Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti Review

We were spoilt with wildlife viewing and bespoke luxury safari tent experiences in Masai Mara, so when we made our way to Serengeti, we were a tad bit concerned if  Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti is going to be worth the long hike. We had to take a small 13 seat aircraft, a drive to cross the border between Kenya and Tanzania and another small aircraft from an open-air airport with an unpaved runway at Tarime airstrip to get to the Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti.  As soon as we were handed the champagne flutes at the Seronera Airport, we knew we were in for a treat.  After a welcome drink and some refreshments, we headed into the heart of the world’s most celebrated wildlife reserves – Serengeti National Park, Tanzania .

Rooms and Views at Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti

After an hour and a half drive through the magnificent plains of Serengeti National Park and numerous giraffe and zebra sighting, we made our way to the Lodge.  It seemed like the structures of the lodge appeared out of nowhere right in the middle of the Savannah.

Perched on a series of elevated platforms and walkways, the Four Seasons Lodge sits next to an animal watering hole where elephants and zebras stop by for a drink .  Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti features an impressive 77 guest rooms, suites and villas, each with intimate views and close connections to the Serengeti’s expansive landscapes. We had a Terrace Suite with a plunge pool looking onto the watering hole. We stayed for 4 nights and woke up every morning looking to see if can see the elephants or zebras stopping at the water hole.

Loved the welcome amenity that was waiting for us when we checked-in

We had some wonderful amenity waiting for us when we checked in – including chilled champagne, fruits, chocolates and Masai bead bracelets. Our room was decorated in contemporary design with lots of African elements and colors.  We had a king bed and sofa bed that was converted into beds for the kids.  We had two full bathrooms, an outdoor shower and a nice plunge pool.  The outside sitting area had the best views of the waterhole. There were Maasai warriors in the lodge for guarding the guests and the wildlife. If you don’t like roughing it or if this is your first Safari experience then Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti is a perfect choice.  We saw quite a few families on while we were there, children must be 2 or older to stay at the Lodge though.

Nearly 75 percent of the overall suppliers for the Lodge are from Tanzania and within the Lodge’s Boutique, 90 percent of items are from Africa, with 60 percent being specifically from Tanzania. Throughout the Lodge, Four Seasons showcases products from Shanga Shangaa – a socially conscious for-profit enterprise that employs local people with disabilities to create unique art pieces from recycled glass and other recycled materials.

Expansive game drives and explorations

While the Four Seasons Safari Lodge is ultra luxurious and difficult to leave, you still have to plan for a few game drives and wildlife exploration after all that is why you are here!  We saw zebras crisscrossed looking out for predators, giraffes grazing lazily, an old cheetah, a pride of lions and hippos galumph in muddy pools, we saw a few wildebeest that decided not to follow the migratory paths. Our covered safari vehicles have a/c, WiFi and even a little cooler stocked will cold drinks. Unlike Kenya, the safari vehicles can’t go off-road here, but the seasoned trackers and guides were able to get us to the best animal sightings possible. Tse Tse flies is an issue so make sure to bring insect repellent and dress in neutral colors, blues tend to attract these pesky creatures. ( See here for our Safari packing list).  The Land Rover vehicles have popup tops that you can look out from if you chose to leave the windows open, and the flies sneak in, you can use a swatter made of wildebeest tail to get them out.

There is not just one way to see the stunning Serengeti landscape, you can go on half-day or full-day game drives, Immerse yourself in the splendors of the Serengeti on an intimate 90-minute guided walking Safari or go on an expert driver-guide full-day adventure to the world’s largest inactive, volcanic caldera at Ngorongoro crater and visit a Maasai Village – the options  are varied just like the seasons in Serengeti Plains. One of our favorites was an early morning Hot air Balloon Safari.

Spa at the Four Seasons Lodge

After those bumpy safari rides it is always nice and relaxing to get some spa time. We had a Kifaa massage , which is similar to a hot-stone massage but done using a wooden tool called Rungu .  We got a couples massage while the kids had a signature treatment at the luxury Spa. The Spa uses locally-inspired treatments that source local ingredients and the treatment beds, face an expansive panoramic window with extraordinary views of the Serengeti.

Dining Options at the Lodge

As you would expect at any Four Seasons Hotel, the property’s dining options are exceptional .  We dined at Kula’s Restaurant, Boma Grill, and Maji Bar & Terrace. Most morning began with breakfast at Kula’s Restaurant, located on the second floor and its incredible views of the Elephant Watering Hole and Infiniti-Edge Pool.  We had lunch or snacks at the Maji Bar and had a Boma dinner one night at the Boma Grill while enjoying a traditional Maasai dance.

This was our favorite night with the open-air fire pit and traditional music and locally inspired cuisine.  Maji Bar served light African tapas, fresh salads, nice cocktails and pizzas. The property can also arrange a variety of Special Dining Experiences for guests in different areas of the resort – poolside, in the bush, or the Wine Cellar.  We learned from the staff that all the ingredients come from Arusha via trucks – from the choices of fresh fruits and juices to breads, vegetables, everything was what we have come to appreciate when staying at Four Seasons. The kids, of course, were happy to see endless choices for deserts and I was happy that there were always vegetarian and vegan choices at every meal.

Discovery Center and Community Involvement

Four Seasons Serengeti Lodge has a discovery center where kids and adults can learn about the wildlife in that area and the Great Migration.  The Great Migration is the largest mass movement of land mammals on Earth, when more than a million wildebeest, along with thousands of zebra, topi and gazelle, stalked by predators like big cats, vultures and hyenas circle through the Serengeti plains in Tanzania and Masai Mara Reserve in Kenya. Following instinct and the scent of moisture, looking for fresher greener land, the herds move clockwise from their calving grounds in the lush plains of the southern Serengeti, moving to the northern Serengeti and eventually cross the Mara river to Masai Mara.

Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti Review - Photo by Priya, Outside Suburbia

You can arrange for a Professional Wildlife Photographer to accompany your safari and offer advice and photo tips and once back at the Discovery Centre, the pro can critique your work and offer editing and post-production tips, as well as one-on-one workshops and, if desired, a private slide show.

I can’t mention enough about the good work that goes on behind the scenes at Four Seasons Serengeti Lodge. Through contributions from every Four Seasons game drive, walking safari, select boutique items and guest donations, the Lodge is able to support a number of community and wildlife projects in and around the Serengeti. You can learn more about it here .

Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti Review, Final thoughts

Visiting Africa, especially Serengeti was incredibly special for us.  We have been dreaming of a visit to Africa forever and glad that it came together so well. Thanks to the staff at Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti for handling all our arrangements and flight and transportation.  You can see here for details on how to get to the lodge .  This trip was such a precious gift and we made so many everlasting memories while we were here – from game drives to the Hot air balloon safari over the Savannah to the sunset on the Kopje.

This was the highlight of the trip, when a heard of elephants came to drink at the watering hole, right outside our suite

Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti Review - Photo by Priya, Outside Suburbia

During a conversation with the manager Martin at the property, we mentioned how we haven’t yet seen one of those epic African sunsets since it had been so cloudy in the evenings.  He arranged for a special sunset viewing for us on top of a Kopje, a rocky outcrop near the property.  Accompanied by our guide Ahmed we climbed up to the little hill to be surprised by a little sun-downer set up with wine, beer and snacks, and the friendly staff.

Ahmed manages the Discovery Centre and leads the walking safaris from the Lodge and was full of knowledge about flora and fauna of the surrounding Savannah. While the sunset was still a little cloudy, it was a magical finish to our trip.  They always go above and beyond to make your stay special and memorable, that is the reason we seek out Four Seasons Properties during our travels!

Like Hemingway said, “If I have ever seen magic, it has been in Africa!”

And just like that our time in the Savannah was over and it was time to go, with heavy hearts and hopes of a return visit we boarded our flight to Zanzibar our next destination for a few days.

If there were one more thing I could do, it would be to go on safari once again — Karen Blixen author of Out of Africa

I didn’t know Four Seasons also arranges tours in Africa. But looking at your post and reading your blog, it seems they’re doing a great job. You have beautiful photos and it looks like you really enjoyed a luxurious stay. Is it worth it? I’m sure the cost is a bit steep compared to other tour suppliers. Your lodging though is magnificent! It’s true you spoilt yourself. The Serengeti is also looking stunning. Anyway, loved your post! This is a must share!

Four Seasons Safari Lodge

A simply stunning lodge in the central serengeti.

Four Seasons - pool

Facilities tabs

As one of the smartest, and largest properties in the Serengeti, the Four Seasons Safari Lodge really does have it all. Its location, in the heart of the Seronera region, offers reliable game viewing throughout the year and is a perfect base with simply stunning accommodation and facilities. One of the most impressive parts to the lodge is the infinity pool that overlooks a man-made water hole… sit back and relax whilst watching a family of elephants come for a drink!

The Four Seasons Safari Lodge is located in the central area of the Serengeti, slightly north of the Seronera area. Along with the wildebeest migration (visible around April to June), the Seronera region is famed for its fantastic wildlife that is reliably seen throughout the year. However, with the main airstrip of the Serengeti being located in Seronera, this is also the busiest area of the park, especially during the peak months.

As the largest property in all of the Serengeti, the facilities at the Four Seasons are what you would expect and more! The whole lodge stands slightly above the game-filled plains, with raised wooden walkways connecting the lounge, reception area, restaurants, pool, fitness centre and spa, and all of the 80 together. The Four Seasons also has a man-made waterhole which attracts regular wild animals and what way to sit back and watch the wildlife from the hotels’ infinity pool or private terraces!

With a maximum occupancy of 180 or so guests, the Four Seasons Safari Lodge is by far the largest bush property we recommend and sell. The 77 rooms are all extremely spacious and were designed to feel contemporary yet authentic, with local textiles and artwork proudly on show throughout the lodge. The room types vary from standard ‘savannah rooms’ to waterhole view rooms and stunning villas with private pools so whether you are looking for comfortable family accommodation, or a special honeymoon suite, there is something for everyone.

The Four Seasons offer game drives in the Serengeti National Park with their resident vehicles and guides. This would be on a shared basis with usually, a maximum of 6/7 people per vehicle. However because of the lodges’ position in Seronera, it is possible to arrive with your private vehicle and guide, especially if you are combining the lodge with other northern parks such as the Ngorongoro Crater.

We had a fantastic time in the Serengeti! The whole experience - from the flight to Serengeti, to the transports within the region, to the Four Seasons to the Safaris - was incredible! We had representatives from the Four Seasons waiting for us at the airport and took great care of us all throughout our stay there - including the game drives at morning and dusk. Our only regret is not having more time to enjoy it all.

Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti

Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti

Insider’s Review of Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti

Undisputed capital of the world’s wild things, the Serengeti in Tanzania embodies the Africa Hemingway had in mind when he wrote “I loved this country and I felt at home and where a man feels at home outside of where he’s born, is where he’s meant to go.”

The Four Seasons folks understand and cherish the Serengeti, and a stay in their Safari Lodge Serengeti is a hard-to-top experience of the plain and its idyllic rocky kopjes and the vast assemblage of animals large, small, fascinating, and unexpected, that inhabit it. The southern, somewhat drier, portion of the New Hampshire-sized Serengeti-Maasai Mara ecosystem, the Serengeti has long been near-synonymous with African safari itself. Amazing in its enormity, its almost infinite skies and long, golden reaches, its million-year quiet, the Serengeti enraptures with grandeur and small moments of grace; we may well see, as Elspeth Huxley did, a “loping giraffe, like a tiger lily bending with dignity before a gusty breeze.”

Accommodations at Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti

The 77 luxury guest rooms at the Four Seasons Serengeti range from simply sumptuous to the grand Presidential Villa—with suites and smaller luxury villas to choose from. All are designed to showcase the great plain right outside, with expansive windows and large private terraces (many with their own sparkling dipping pool), and each features the highest standard of welcoming, wonderfully decorated comfort and what the English call mod cons: all the way from Wi-Fi, unobtrusive air conditioning, and flat-screen televisions to hypoallergenic pillows provided cheerfully, quickly, in the Lodge’s manner.

And after a dip in the infinity pool, or a visit to the fitness (or the business) centre, dining at the Lodge is a refreshing joy, either at the Maji Bar and Terrace, the Sundowner Bar, the Boma Grill, Kula’s Restaurant, in your suite, or on a catered picnic during a game drive.

A note for families & children

Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti welcomes children, and has many programs and activities, awaiting them, including—amongst much else—membership in the Kijana Klub, which has its own extremely well-equipped space in the Lodge’s main building.

Activities at Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti

Our Micato Safari Director is affectionately at home in Tanzania’s Serengeti. Private game drives with him and his trusty Driver Guide are revelatory. Here is the Africa we have dreamed about, “a paradise caressed by light and air in their most special forms,” as the great lover of safari Peter Beard said.

Like Isak Dinesen, we’ll see elephants “pace along as if they had an appointment at the end of the world.” Early morning game drives in the cool of the equatorial day give us the chance to observe lions as they limber up for their work day; it’s amazing to be so close to such supremely strong beasts, and to watch them search for game, gazing, eyes afire, right through our vehicles–as if we were a harmless cloud. Hippos galumph in muddy pools, mile-long streams of wildebeest pace along migratory paths, “and over everything,” John Gunther wrote, “is the high bright sky…foaming with enormous pink, cream-colored, and slate-blue clouds, so incandescent that they look as if they have fires inside.” (Ernest Hemingway, who loved a good meal, on safari and anywhere else, said those immense and dramatic African clouds “looked like you could have scooped them up with a spoon.”)

The Four Seasons prides itself on displaying the Serengeti in full—culturally with respectful and hearty visits and walks with Tanzania’s local Maasai, soul-enrichingly with expansive game drives and explorations— and in partnership with our Micato Safari Director—and your inspirations, inclinations, and enthusiasm—will go all out to provide a comprehensive visit to the ever-wondrous Serengeti.
