  • Best Time to Visit: The ideal time to visit Gavi is during the winter months, from November to February when the weather is pleasant and cool. The monsoon season (June to September) should be avoided as heavy rainfall can hinder outdoor activities.
  • Permits and Entry: Gavi is a protected area, and entry permits are required to visit. These permits can be obtained from the Forest Department or through authorized tour operators. It’s advisable to arrange your permits in advance to avoid any last-minute hassles.
  • Accommodation: Gavi offers limited accommodation options, including forest guesthouses and tented camps. Make sure to book your accommodation in advance, especially during peak seasons, as availability can be limited.
  • Wildlife and Nature: Gavi is renowned for its rich biodiversity and wildlife. Keep an eye out for various species of birds, animals like elephants, tigers, and deer, and vibrant butterflies. Guided trekking and nature walks are popular activities to explore the wilderness.
  • Boating at Gavi Lake: One of the main attractions of Gavi is the boating experience at Gavi Lake. Enjoy a serene boat ride amidst the scenic surroundings and take in the tranquility of the place. Don’t forget to carry your camera to capture the stunning views.
  • Pack Essentials: Since Gavi is a forested area, it is recommended to carry essential items like comfortable clothing, sturdy shoes, insect repellent, sunscreen, and a hat. Also, pack some snacks and water as food options may be limited.
  • Responsible Tourism: Gavi is known for its eco-tourism initiatives, and it’s important to maintain the pristine environment. Respect the surroundings, follow the guidelines provided by the Forest Department, and avoid littering.
  • Connectivity: Gavi is relatively remote, and the road leading to Gavi is known for its scenic beauty. It’s advisable to hire a private vehicle or opt for a guided tour to reach Gavi. The nearest major town is Pathanamthitta, which is well-connected by road and rail.
  • Plan for a Longer Stay: Gavi offers various activities and attractions, including treks, camping, wildlife spotting, and visits to nearby viewpoints. To make the most of your visit, consider planning for a longer stay of at least two to three days.

The Forest Department permits only 10 vehicles during week days and up to 30 vehicles on Saturdays and Sundays to this tourist spot.

If you are looking for a comfortable trip to Gavi, avoid choosing special days. The Forest Department allows the entry of up to 35 vehicles during such days. The main areas that you cover include Angamoozhy, Moozhiyar, Kakki Reservoir, Anathodu Dam, Pampa Reservoir, Kochu Pamba, GAVI, Pachakanam, Periyar Tiger reserve , Kozhikanum, Vallakadavu and Vandiperiyar. The most interesting feature of your Gavi trip is that it is a one-way tracking system. Kerala Tourism

Gavi - The eco-tourism experience

Drawing on the wild and natural beauty of the place, the State-run Kerala Forest Development Corporation has developed an eco-tourism project to attract more Nature lovers and adventure tourists to the place.  It takes a two-hour journey by jeep from Kumily to reach picturesque Gavi which is blanketed by the greenery of tea plantations. Advance booking with the Kerala Forest Development Corporation is appreciated as entry passes have to be obtained from the forest check post en route at Vallakkadavu. Packages There are three different tour packages offered by the KFDC at Gavi.  The first is a day-time package from 8 am to 4.30 pm. The overnight package provides for accommodation at Green Mansions, the eco-tourism centre near the lake. In another overnight package, guests spend the night at a jungle camp site to which they are taken in jeeps. Ambience The picturesque beauty of the place attracts a steady stream of visitors including deep jungle trekkers, bird watchers, Nature lovers, research students, and those looking for a break from the daily grind. The recently introduced eco-tourism project by the Kerala Forest Development Corporation provides a memorable wildlife and jungle experience. En-route Gavi During the two-hour jeep ride to Gavi, one has to drive past hills, valleys, tropical forests, grasslands, sholas, gushing waterfalls and cardamom plantations. All along the way are beautiful places like  Mundakkayam, Kuttikkanam, Peerumedu and Vandiperiyar where one gets to see Nature at her best. As Gavi is adjacent to the Periyar Tiger Reserve, visitors will have to pass through a large area of the reserve forests.  The view of the amazing greenery and a glimpse into the wildlife are two of the major attractions of the journey. An important landmark en-route is the Pampa Reservoir. The Pullumedu peak is also on the way. In Gavi Cooling off in the waters of bubbling brooks among thick greenery inhaling the fresh air scented with the aroma of cardamom is a magical experience that very few places other than Gavi can offer. The wild animals like the Nilgiri Langurs, the herds of elephants and the diverse avian fauna make the place all the more attractive. Activities involved in the project The eco-tourism project have come up with various activities for visitors including treks  in deep jungles, night safaris, outdoor camping, elephant safaris, wildlife watching, bird-watching, stays atop tree huts, visits to Paradise Cove at Ninnumulli, boating in Gavi and Kochupampa lakes, stays at the eco-lodge overlooking Gavi Lake, leisurely walks through spice gardens, visits to cardamom factories and so on.  A team of KFDC men supervises the various tour packages offered to visitors. During  treks and jungle expeditions, visitors can avail the services of guides. From Gavi, one can trek to Meenar, Chenthamara Kokka and Valley View. The trekking course passes through patches of dense forest. During treks into the deep jungle, apart from guides, there will be a local 'elephant chaser' accompanying visitors. They are also called patanki men and they use their ingenious noise-making device to protect the team from dangerous wildlife encounters. Meenar offers tranquil and pristine natural beauty while the Chenthamara Kokka offers a scenic view of the dangerously alluring deep ravine with thick forests below. A boat-ride across Paradise Cove at Ninnumulli is another magnificent experience. The cove has many exquisite wild flowers and one can also hear the musical chirping of birds in the backdrop.  The KFDC has organized outdoor camping and night safaris at Kullur, Gavi Pullumedu, Kochu Pampa and Pachakanam. Through these camps and safaris, visitors can enjoy the dark beauty of the tropical rain forests at night as well as night-life in the jungle. If you are the very adventurous sort, you could also try night camping in the forest, an unforgettable experience. Tree houses are also available for use by campers. Guests can also take a walk through the spice gardens and visit the cardamom factory near Gavi. Accommodation Apart from tree houses and tents that are put up in the jungle, there is an eco-lodge, Green Mansion, set up by the KFDC at Gavi. The stay at the Green Mansion is a unique experience. It offers a spectacular view of Lake Gavi and the forests around. A short trek from Green Mansion will take you to Kochu Pampa, where you can spot the endangered Nilgiri Tahrs. Conservation efforts The eco-tourism project is planned in such a way that it supports the KFDC’s conservation efforts. Apart from taking all measures to avoid the slightest of disturbances to the eco-system, the project also creates awareness among visitors about the necessity to protect the forest and the wildlife. The eco-friendly measures that are adhered to during the adventure travels are appreciable and the journey through the forests is explorative and educative. Involvement of local populace The eco-tourism project at Gavi is conceived in such a way that it involves the local community. The local tribal community is actively involved in the tourism projects and often act as guides, cooks and gardeners. This gives them a much needed extra income and helps them make a living. As they have abundant knowledge of the forest, they are able to lead visitors expertly through the Nature trails and offer them a lot of information on the flora and fauna of any area.

Taking a trip to Gavi? Read this

 alt=

Ever since the release of the film  Ordinary  (2012), Gavi has been a popular tourist destination. It also helped that when 'Alistair International' the world acclaimed tourism major listed it among the leading eco-tourism centres and one of the must-see places in India, Gavi became a much sought-after tourist destination. And since the lockdown, like most tourist locales in Kerala, this has also once again opened its doors to visitors. We have a few guidelines for you in case you are visiting.

How to reach

KSTRC buses are plying between Pathanamthitta-Kumali road. There are buses to Kumali via Gavi from Pathanamthitta. You can check with the Pathanamthitta-Kumali bus depots for more information.

Timber cottages await tourists who visit Gavi

And in case you are planning to go by car, we would suggest hiring a jeep instead. You need an entry pass, and they are allotting only limited passes for a day. Entry passes must be obtained from the Forest Check Post en route at Vallakkadavu. Advance booking with the Kerala Forest Development Corporation Ltd. is highly appreciable wherein such formalities will be taken care of by the company itself. Once you get a pass (given out from 7 am), only 30 private vehicles are allowed.

Sights and sounds

When it comes to Gavi, the adage, “it’s not the destination but the journey that matters” comes to the fore. It is quite an experience to ride through the interiors of the Gavi forest. Since it is situated 3400 ft above sea level, Gavi is cold throughout the year. Even in summers the temperature barely touches 10 degrees. That is why the road trip through the cool forests, enclosed by hills and meadows are so enjoyable. You can spot elephants, wild bulls, deers and if are you lucky, spot a few Nilgiri Thars and Long-tailed monkeys. With more than 260 species of birds including the great pied hornbill, woodpecker, and kingfishers, Gavi is a heaven for birdwatchers. You can opt for a visit to the nearby cardamom plantations, coffee plantation and cardamom curing centres. And you get a great view of the Sabarimala from here.

Gavi

A few things to keep in mind

It is always safer to travel in KSTRC Buses than private cars as you can avoid the tension caused by unexpected encounters with wild animals. Littering (plastic bottles, plastic covers, food) and alcohol consumption in the forests are punishable acts.

Tourist packages

Kerala Forest Development Corporation is offering several attractive tourist packages. Trekking, outdoor camping, Safari etc. are available here. There are guided forest walk packages, where you can walk through the forest with a forest guide. Go canoeing in the clean waters of the lake or watch the sunset from a hill. You can also hire a boat and float over Kochu Pamba lake to relax. You can try hiking to Meenar, Chenthamara Kokka and Valley Viewpoint and Outdoor camping and night safaris to Kullar, Pullumedu, Kochu Pampa, Pachakanam and Anathode.

Exploring a destination...

The joy of travel comes in exploring new things. Planting your feet somewhere you’ve never been before brings with it the rush of discovery and the joy of pushing back on the boundaries of your world.

But when one does arrive at that fresh frontier, there are ways better than others to begin your journey of discovery. Follow these steps and see the world with a new light.

• Discover a new city through a food tour. Food tour’s are the easiest way to take a tour, learn about the local delicacies, and the best of all, get great tips that aren’t just “local” tips for tourists, but sometimes, lessons for a lifetime too

• Use Public Transportation. When you are in a new city, you can possibly see places and people that you wouldn’t normally see when simply walking to the places that checks your list. Some buses or rails take you to parts of the city you wouldn’t get to see otherwise. Whilst using public transportation, just ensure that you are following the local norms and do remember to watch the locals!

• Find a local festival. Go beyond what other tourists might do while visiting a place. Look for the unique things you would want to do. Use social media or the local tourism website to find out what’s going on locally. You may have to move out of the center of the city to do some of the less popular but more unique things, so just keep that in mind!
