Day 1 Perth – Kalgoorlie

PERTH 1

Individual journey to East Perth railway station and check-in for the upcoming rail journey on the “Prospector” to Kalgoorlie. In 1896, the railway connected Perth with Kalgoorlie, where gold had been discovered in 1893. During the 7-hour journey you will have fantastic views of the beautiful patchwork hills of the Avon Valley. The rolling green hills slowly transition to the flatter, drier and rougher, but no less beautiful desert plains. In Kalgoorlie – regarded as the largest city in the Australian Outback – you will be met by your local driver-guide and immediately embark on an orientation tour. Every town or city is unique, but Kalgoorlie carries with it a certain distinction. It’s one of those places that becomes etched into your memory, bursting with evocative landscapes, sights and attractions. Built on a fortuitous gold rush, Kalgoorlie hast not looked back.

Accommodation: Hospitality Motel, Kalgoorlie (Breakfast)

Day 2 Kalgoorlie – Lake Ballard – Kalgoorlie

KALGOORLIE

This morning, take your time to explore above ground at Hannan’s North Tourist Mine and discover the secrets of gold rush history and modern-day mining in the Goldfields. After we are heading for Menzies, a former gold mining town. A dusty track brings at to Lake Ballard. The highlight is the amazing and not to be expected sculpture park spread out on the dry salt plains of the lake. The artwork is a collection of 51 different steel sculptures by Antony Gormley. They stand against the dramatic backdrop of the lake’s dry salt bed. Located only 10 minutes north of Kalgoorlie, is the original corrugated iron shed and bush ring that was once the Two-Up school. Two-up is a traditional Australian gambling game that is periodically still played here.

Day 3 Kalgoorlie Gold Prospecting Tour

Australia is in the top 5 Gold resource locations in the world. Large nuggets are still being found and the price of gold is the highest it has ever been . The Kalgoorlie Boulder region is renowned for prospecting and fossicking. Today we follow in the footsteps of the old prospectors by joining a prospecting day tour. An exciting foray into the goldfields finding gold nuggets is something you will remember for the rest of your life. It is the adventure of a lifetime, dealing with the elements of the outback and pitting your wits against nature and finally having a win with your gold nugget finds. There is an old belief that every nugget has the finders name on it.

Accommodation: Hospitality Motel, Kalgoorlie (Breakfast / Lunch)

Day 4 Kalgoorlie – Hyden

WAVE ROCK

In the course of the morning a visit to the mine site “Super Pit” – Australia’s biggest open cut gold mine – enables us to capture impressions of the unbelievable ratio and dimensions on the Australian continent. Now we start to realize the differences of gold mining of the past and present. A visit to the Kalgoorlie Museum completes our time of this riche gold mine town. By tracing the footsteps of the first gold seekers we will be reaching Coolgardie and Southern Cross and leaving Western Australia’s Golden Mile. From here we will be following the track of the Emu Fence Road in a southerly direction to Hyden. Tonight, we will be enjoying our farewell dinner (at your own expenses) with some cold beer, tasty wines and great food. We will be reflecting on the last 4 days of this amazing journey.

Accommodation: Wave Rock Motel, Hyden (Breakfast)

Day 5 Hyden – Perth

PERTH 2

After breakfast, we will visit the famous and astounding “breakers wave” the ‘Wave Rock’. There is enough time to explore and learn about the story of this unbelievable natural wonder. Afterwards we drive through the wide-stretched West Australian wheat belt to reach York at about lunchtime. A quaint short stroll in the oldest inland settlement of W.A. will take you back to the time of the first settlers. The old well-maintained and renovated houses boasting their original facades bring forth still today the atmosphere of the pioneer’s time. A visit to a Camel farm is another highlight where you will get valuable information and details about the history and modern use of the single-humped desert ships here in Australia. Enjoyable travel back to Perth where this tour concludes.

With the gold price hitting new highs ($1720USD per ounce as at March 2021), and the recent popularity of the Discovery channel show Aussie Gold Hunters, a modern day gold rush has seen a wave of hobbyist prospectors head to Australia’s Golden Outback.

Have you been inspired to try gold prospecting? To help you strike it lucky in the Goldfields, we’ve put together some handy tips for beginners to be able to prospect safely and legally whilst out on the Golden Quest Discovery Trail.

Keeping it Legal

First things first. It’s not legal to look for gold unless you have a Miners Right.

You can get one for $25 from the Department of Mines.

We went and got a Miners Right as part of writing this article.

You need a Miner’s Right to legally prospect in WA

On The Golden Quest Discovery Trail there are three Mining Registrar locations.

The first one is in Coolgardie, on Bayley Street. There is one in Leonora, on Rochester street and where we end the trail – site 25 – in Kalgoorlie-Boulder, on the corner of Hunter and Broadwood Streets.

Here’s a link to their website.

If you’re planning to venture out independently  The Seven Golden Rules of Prospecting is the best starting place for legal and safety information. It’s a good idea to do extensive research on the areas you plan on exploring.

Prepare for extended periods of time in unfamiliar and extremely harsh environments.

There are rules for where you are, and where you aren’t allowed to prospect. For detailed and up to date information, the friendly and helpful staff at  The Departments of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety  can help you with all you need to know.

Safety First

When prospecting on the Golden Quest, make sure that you let someone know where you are going and will you expect to return.

Consider buying or hiring a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) or an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) that is registered and GPS enabled, for further information on both purchasing and registering a PLB or EPIRB click on the following link ( register your beacon ). These can be hired from most camping shops around the State.

For more information on outback safety visit the Western Australian Police Force.

Tips from Aussie Gold Hunters

AUssie Gold Hunters stars prospecting for gold in the Outback along the Golden Quest Discovery Trail. Prospecting for beginners 2021

Marcus McGuire and Linden Brownley on Aussie Gold Hunters

We spoke to brothers Marcus McGuire and Linden Brownley of Aussie Gold Hunters fame for some tips on having fun and keeping safe while prospecting in the Goldfields.

Marcus recommends bringing “plenty of water and food, plus the app Trilobite and two way radios, but mainly water and food. ” and says the best thing about prospecting is  “ you never gonna know what you get when it comes to Gold, a small one or a big one, obviously big ones are the best”  while for Linden, “The best thing about prospecting is being out bush, on the land.” for safety’s sake he says   “Don’t go alone if you’re an amateur and be prepared – water, food, fuel, first aid etc”

Is Prospecting on the Goldfields expensive?

Prospectors can easily spend up to $10,000 on their equipment and that’s not including any earthworks machinery that the semi-pro prospectors use. You can buy outright or hire the gear you need to try before you buy.

The best place to gear up along the trail is Kalgoorlie-Boulder, where you’ll find the most equipment retailers. Finders Keepers, or The Prospectors Patch can give you advice on the right equipment to set you up.

Gold prospecting tours in the Goldfields

There are many guided prospecting tours, and for less than the cost of buying a metal detector you can book with a guide and rent the equipment you need.

Gold Talk Leonora offer a 3 day course suitable for the absolute beginner as well as those with some experience.

Become a member on the Pirates Gold Tours Facebook page to see what tag along tours on private leases are available and ask about their new  four day training courses.

For custom tours Coolgardie Gold Safaris  can create your dream gold hunting adventure. They also run standard 3, 5 or 10 day tours.

Tagging along on a tour means safety in numbers and increasing your chance of a find alongside an experienced guide.

Where can I go gold prospecting in Australia’s Golden Outback?

The whole region is full of possibilities, and while there are some handy apps available to help you find the legal places to explore it is always recommended that you cross check your locations with the Department of Mines Tengraph.

This video provides a  general overview of the Tengraph

What prospecting apps are best for beginners?

gold detecting tours western australia

The Happy Prospector App illustrating land categories

Happy Prospector App provides Metal Detectorists and Gold Prospectors in Western Australia with real time positional information using their smart phone or tablet device Android to show their current position on a map with the ability to overlay the Western Australian DMIRS (DMP) Tenement data so the user knows if they are on a live or pending tenement. This makes the user’s smartphone or tablet a powerful tool to know exactly where they are on the ground in relation to Mining, Prospecting or Exploration tenements.  Internet is not needed to use the App in the field, but Tenement Data file updates require Internet access. As there is some ambiguity around the representation of private land and national parks on the apps, A savvy prospector will cross check the information from the apps with the information from The Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety  before heading out. Other Apps to investigate include Trilobite and  Gold Prospecting Pro.

Who will buy my gold and what can be made with it?

Natural Gold Nuggets & Jewellery located at 150 Hannan Street, Kalgoorlie not only buy gold but can also create custom jewellery. If you don’t strike it rich on your prospecting adventures, it’s also a great place to pick up a local souvenir. They stock natural gemstones and gold nuggets from the region.

Family fun in the Goldfields

Looking for a unique prospecting experience but not quite ready to venture out bush? The Kalgoorlie based, Hannans North Tourist Mine offers families an array of activities to make you feel like a Miner. Climb up the 793C haul truck, pan for gold or catch a gold pour demonstration.

We recommend packing a picnic for lunch in the Chinese Remembrance Gardens. This oasis of zen is located within the Hannans North Tourist Mine precinct and is often host to weddings, stargazing events and yoga classes.

Save room for an ice cream from the gift shop where you’ll find an great selection of souvenirs suitable for all budgets.

Prospector World

Best Place to Find Gold in Western Australia

admin 6-February-2019 Prospector World Blog Leave a Comment

Western Australia is Australia’s most popular metal detecting destination, attracting thousands of recreational gold prospectors from the eastern states of Australia. Much of Western Australia’s appeal for gold prospectors rely on the remoteness and arid wilderness scenario, with the added opportunity to strike it rich. The gold prospective area in Western Australia is very large, but generally gold occurrences stretch in a broad line from Norseman in the south, through Kalgoorlie, Leonora, Wiluna, Meekatharra, Nullagine, Marble Bar, Halls Creek, and west to the beaches of Karratha on the northwest coast.

History of Gold Prospecting in Western Australia

The metal detecting boom in Western Australia commenced in the mid-1970s. Many prospectors ventured out from Kalgoorlie and Meekatharra with new metal detectors aiming to locate gold nuggets using what it was then state of the art technology.

Early detectors however were designed to detect coins and other treasure in America, and were not particularly effective in the highly mineralised and ferruginous soils of Western Australia.

After much experimentation and perseverance, prospectors using early metal detectors got the results they werer after and started finding gold nuggets, particularly over places that had not been visited since the Great Depression in the 1930s.

Although initially gold findings were rather modest, gradually words reached other people around Australia and elsewhere in the world who became interested in gold prospecting. Newspaper articles began featuring excited faces looking at shiny finds of gold nuggets, not just in Western Australia, but all across Australia.

Before 1973, gold nuggets were only sold to registered gold buyers, who would melt down the gold. After 1973, gold nuggets could be freely traded for the first time.

In the late 1970s, gold price increased substantially. Prospectors, mineral collectors and investors began seeking out rare gold nuggets, which were worth a premium over the average price of gold. Nugget jewellery in the form of pendants, earrings and bracelets began to appear available in Kalgoorlie and Perth, and quickly raised in popularity among Australians.

Water had always been an limiting factor influencing Western Australia’s mines and prospectors. Early miners had to rely primarily on dry blowing, a method of separating alluvial gold that is less efficient than traditional water-based separation methods.

As a result, only the richest patches, in the order of at least 1 ounce of gold per tonne of rock mined, were valuable and mined. This represented a great opportunity for early metal detectors, as much of the lower grade gold was left behind.

The early prospectors of Western Australia belonged to a later era, compared to the Eastern States. Tin cans of bully-beef replaced mutton chops or salted meta; bicycles and barrows replaced horses; coins and paper money were often in short supply and trading tokens were no longer accepted.

The mix of nationalities and races were also different from those in the East. The Afghans were brought to Australia to manage the camel transport, and, because of riguous restrictions, fewer Chinese made their way into Western Australia.

Western Australia Today

Western Australia remains Australia’s most popular metal detecting destination, attracting thousands of recreational gold prospectors from the eastern states of Australia.

Much of Western Australia’s appeal for gold prospectors rely on the remoteness and arid wilderness scenario. For many Australians (and other visitors from all around the world), gold prospecting in Western Australia represents a great opportunity to engage in a four wheel driving adventure, visit the Australian Outback and let in some red dust, sip tea made from bore water and, with a bit of luck, strike it rich!

The gold prospective area in Western Australia is very large, and new fields are constantly being discovered. Gold occurrences stretch in a broad line from Norseman in the south, through Kalgoorlie, Leonora, Wiluna, Meekatharra, Nullagine, Marble Bar, Halls Creek, and west to the beaches of Karratha on the northwest coast.

Even today, in 2019, three-rut tracks are routinely encountered. Old cow bells, harness buckles, pots and pans are found, meaning that the person prospecting that ground might well be the first to prospect in that area with a modern metal detector since the early prospectors first worked the area at the turn of the century.

However, such areas become increasingly harder to find. A few years ago, it was relatively easy to find gold within an hours’ drive from Kalgoorlie, but today, you have to travel a bit further to more remote areas and spend a bit of time researching “undetected patches”.

Having said that, it is important to note that areas previously scanned with metal detectors become prospective once again as technology improves. A prospective patch that was cleared 10 years ago might well be prospective once again using a modern metal detector.

One problem in the Eastern Goldfields is that over-grazing and tree clearing has increased dryland salinity, resulting in frequent salty patches that are difficult to ground-balance in your detector.

Remember that the metal detector is just a tool, and is important to understand how to use it in order to maximise its efficiency.

Best Places for Gold Prospecting in Western Australia.

The following is a list of gold prospecting areas in Western Australia where nuggets are found regularly. They contain a GPS reference point to help you navigate to the location with ease.

This list should be used for reference purposes only and rules for prospecting and accessing land must be understood and followed prior to venturing out prospecting for gold.

List of gold prospecting areas near Kalgoorlie-Boulder :

  • Jubilee (408000E, 6624000N). Jubilee occurs approximately 65 km northeast of Kalgoorlie on the Kurnalpi Road. The terrain is undulating and easy to get around, hence a good place for beginners.
  • Lake Lapage – Grey Dam  (413000E, 6614000N). Early miners scraped the gravel above the dense clay underlying the shoreline. This area is one of the best preserved salt lake puddlers in Australia. The Lady of the Lake puddler was built above the lake bed with a long lead up ramp, and official records state that 371 oz of alluvial gold were processed here.
  • Kurnalpi  (426000E, 6622000N). Many large nuggets have been found by early miners at Kurnalpi. In recent times, the alluvial runs have been worked with small front-end loaders and metal detectors. Although alluvial patches are jealously guarded by local prospectors, many patches outside the area have been found and there is still a lot of ground under-explored.
  • Mulgabbie  (445000E, 6662000N) Numerous ironstone and lightly timbered hills radiate out in all directions from Mulgabbie Hill. Gullies and steep batters strewn with quartz indicate that gold could be very widespread in this area. Several shafts are aligned along a rich reef northwest of the base of Mulgabbie Hill. Extensive alluvial flats surrounding the shafts have produced abundant nuggets and still offer great potential today.
  • Garibaldi  (392000E, 6625000N). Numerous gold finds are scattered throughout the area, including Penny’s Find, are disseminated through the ironstone and laterite hills of the area.
  • Kalpini (399000E, 6636000N). A series of gold workings, mines and shafts are located near Carmelia Road on the way from Kalgoorlie towards Kalpini Dam. There are numerous deep shafts to watch out for.
  • Gordon’s Dam  (364000E, 6631000N). This area is found after passing Kanowna from Kalgoorlie and continuing straight towards Gindalbie Homestead. Gordon’s Dam covers a very extensive area over dry lake beds. Numerous large nuggets have been found throughout the area.
  • Lindsay Well – Ginbaldie (380000E, 6644000N). Diggings and shaft at Ginbaldie extend from the wind mill that is located east of the old township to several Km northeast of Ginbaldie. The track into Lindsay Well heads northwest past an old rifle range to the well and a fence line running north-south. Diggings are found for some distance on both sides of the fence.
  • Edjudina (437500E, 6701500N). About 116 Km past Gindalbie Homestead, the Edjudina and Yarri mining districts are found. There are old dry blowing patches scattered throughout the area, and nuggets have been found over a large area around.
  • Broad Arrow . Nuggets of over 60 oz have been found near Broad Arrow in the area about 2 Km west from Broad Arrow junction. The area contains numerous diggings and shafts as well as patches of dry blowings.
  • Carnage (301000E, 6637000N). The Carnage workings occur approximately 9 Km West from the Ora Banda township and pub. Numerous nuggets have been found on this area over a straight line, suggesting the nuggets were either shed along strike from a mineralised reef, or redeposited in shallow gullies.
  • Carbine Station (300000E, 6626000N). Carbine occurs northeast of Coolgardie and can be accessed trough the Coolgardie North road, or through Broad Arrow / Ora Banda. Numerous nuggets have been found in this area, both on the flats as well as along gullies in surrounding hills.

A Guide To Finding Gold Prospecting Locations in Western Australia

I. introduction.

Finding Gold Prospecting Locations in Western Australia starts with the discovery of this valuable element in the late 19th century. Since then, the region has been a significant hub for gold miners and enthusiasts seeking to strike it rich. Gold prospecting’s allure extends beyond the glittering reward; it also profoundly influences the region’s social fabric, economic dynamics, and cultural identity.

II. Geology of Gold

Geological Map of Kalgoorlie - Golden Mile

A. How Gold is Formed

Gold formation is a cosmic phenomenon, born out of the cataclysmic explosions of distant supernovae. These celestial events generate the necessary pressure and heat to forge heavier elements, including gold. Over billions of years, gold and other elements arrived on Earth through asteroid impacts, eventually getting incorporated into our planet’s crust. The gold we prospect today is a glimpse into our cosmic past.

B. Gold in Western Australia’s Geological Context

  • Greenstone Belts:  Greenstone belts, comprising metamorphosed volcanic and sedimentary rocks, are key areas for gold in Western Australia. These geological formations are typically rich in mineral deposits, including gold.
  • Archean Gold Deposits:  The Archean eon, a geological period over 2.5 billion years ago, gifted Western Australia with several gold deposits. They are commonly found within greenstone belts.
  • Sedimentary Gold Deposits:  Some gold deposits in Western Australia occur in sedimentary rock layers. Such deposits might be in the form of alluvial or placer deposits where gold particles are weathered and transported by water action.
  • Tertiary Gold Deposits:  These are relatively recent geological formations, where gold is typically found in weathered rock and soils, often associated with quartz.

III. Understanding Topographical Maps and Geological Signs

A. reading topographical maps.

  • Understanding Map Symbols and Landforms:  To find promising areas for gold prospecting, one must be adept at interpreting topographical maps. These maps provide crucial information about the land’s physical features, including hills, valleys, water bodies, and potential gold-bearing zones.
  • Interpreting Geological Layers and Fault Lines:  Topographical maps can also give insights into the geological makeup of the land, including different rock layers and fault lines, which can suggest the presence of gold.

B. Recognizing Geological Signs of Gold

  • Quartz Veins:  Quartz veins are a common indicator of gold. Since gold often deposits alongside quartz in nature, the presence of quartz veins might signal a gold-rich area.
  • Iron Staining:  Areas with iron staining – red, brown, or yellowish coloration on rocks – might hint at gold presence. This is due to the oxidation of iron minerals often found alongside gold.
  • Specific Soil Types:  Certain soil types, such as those rich in black sand (heavy minerals including magnetite and hematite), can be indicative of gold-bearing areas.

V. Metal Detecting

A. introduction to metal detecting.

While traditional gold hunting methods hold their charm, modern prospectors often turn to technology to increase their odds of finding gold. Metal detecting is a common practice in the quest for gold, combining the thrill of treasure hunting with the precision of modern science.

B. Understanding Different Types of Metal Detectors

  • Very Low Frequency (VLF) Detectors:  VLF detectors are popular among gold hunters for their versatility and sensitivity. These detectors send out a continuous low-energy wave that penetrates the ground and reflects off metal objects, such as nuggets. The detector then reads this reflection, alerting the prospector to the possible presence of gold.

C. Techniques and Best Practices for Metal Detecting

Metal detecting isn’t just about waving a detector around and hoping to strike gold; it’s an art that requires technique and understanding. It’s essential to learn how to pinpoint accurately, understand the detector’s sounds, and distinguish between different targets. Ground balancing, which involves setting the detector to ignore signals from naturally occurring minerals in the soil, is another critical technique for successful detecting. Moreover, understanding how to properly dig for targets ensures less damage to the land and a more effective recovery of potential finds.

V. Key Gold Prospecting Locations in Western Australia

A. the golden mile, kalgoorlie.

The  Golden Mile , located in Kalgoorlie, is one of the richest gold-producing regions in the world. The gold deposits here are primarily found in  Archean-aged rocks . Since its discovery in the late 19th century, the Golden Mile has yielded millions of ounces of gold, cementing its status as a hotspot for prospectors.

B. The Pilbara Region

Known for its vast iron ore deposits, the Pilbara region also boasts significant gold reserves. Prospectors have been attracted to this region due to the recurrent discoveries of gold nuggets and the potential for primary gold deposits.

C. Norseman-Wiluna Belt

The Norseman-Wiluna Belt, also referred to as the Eastern Goldfields Superterrane, is another important gold mining district in Western Australia. This region has seen continuous gold production since the late 19th century, and today, it is home to numerous active mining operations.

D. Yalgoo-Singleton Greenstone Belt

This greenstone belt is noted for its potential in hosting significant gold mineralization. Several historic mines and gold prospects are located in this region, making it a worthy destination for gold prospectors.

VI. Regulations and Permits for Gold Prospecting in Western Australia

A. acquiring a miner’s right.

Before you can begin prospecting for gold in Western Australia, you need to acquire a  Miner’s Right . This legal permit, which is easy and inexpensive to obtain, grants the holder the right to prospect for gold and other minerals on Crown Land, or private land where permission has been granted by the landowner.

B. Understanding Trespass Laws

Gold prospectors must understand trespass laws, as venturing onto private property without permission or prospecting in restricted areas can result in legal action. It’s crucial to respect these laws and always seek the appropriate permissions before prospecting.

C. Landowner Rights and Permissions

Even with a Miner’s Right, prospectors must respect the rights of landowners. Prospecting is not permitted within 100 meters of any occupied dwelling or within 400 meters of a pastoral homestead without the explicit permission of the landowner or occupier.

VII. Environmental Considerations and Sustainability in Gold Prospecting

A. impact on the local ecosystem.

While the hunt for gold can be an exciting adventure, it is not without its environmental impact. Digging can disrupt local ecosystems, and improperly managed activities can lead to soil erosion, water pollution, and habitat destruction.

B. Sustainable Prospecting Practices

Prospectors are urged to follow sustainable practices to minimize their environmental footprint. These include filling in any holes dug during prospecting, disposing of trash responsibly, respecting wildlife, and being mindful of water sources. By observing these practices, prospectors can ensure that the beauty and vitality of Western Australia’s landscapes are preserved for future generations.

VIII. Conclusion

Gold Prospecting Locations in Western Australia is more than a hobby; it’s a voyage into the region’s geology, history, and stunning landscapes. With a careful approach, an understanding of the  laws , and respect for the land, anyone can partake in this exciting pursuit. While finding gold may be the ultimate goal, the true treasure lies in the journey of exploration and the connection with the natural world.

Treasure and toil at these gold panning hotspots

gold detecting tours western australia

Follow the dreams of early prospectors during Australia’s gold rush and take a shot at striking it rich.

Whether abandonded, still operating or serving as a theme park of sorts, these gold mining meccas give you an insight into the lengths people used to go in order to find there fortune. Learn the ropes and try some gold panning for yourself. You might even get lucky.

Australia’s Gold Rush and the dawn of a new era

On 12 February 1851, a remarkable discovery was made in New South Wales that completely changed the nature of Australian society. Near Bathurst, Edward Hargraves struck gold, and not long after more was discovered in Victoria. The unearthing escaped silencing from a government afraid of convicts and settlers abandoning their settlements to build their own fortune, and created a mass influx of migrants and settlers to rural spots.

By the end of 1851, more than 500,000 migrants bled into the country, diversifying the overwhelmingly Anglo-Celtic and Irish population. Needless to say, life during and after the Gold Rush hit Australia dramatically changed.

Life as a prospector was not easy. Hours were long and hard. They suffered through a remit of harsh weather conditions while continually battling with other prospectors and the government over claims. Food was double the price it was in every major city, and sanitation was sub-par, to say the least. Many migrants, especially the Chinese, faced heavy discrimination and even worse living conditions. Of course, there was no guarantee that you would even find gold, despite all the hardships and battles against disease. Still, men persisted, their heads filled with promises of one day being one of the lucky ones.

A societal shake up

As this was the Victorian Era, very few women searched for gold or took up residence in the goldfields. However, this changed later. Many set out to try and tame the nomadic men; a mostly unsuccessful endeavour. Ironically, women could prospect without a miner’s license ― a necessity for men. Many women eventually followed the men in their families and worked as teachers, nurses and shopkeepers. Some made their keep selling sly grog and going against the social norms by prospecting alongside their husbands.

The environmental impact of the Gold Rush was major. Much of the land that was dug up during the Rush still has not recovered. These regions still suffer from deforestation, pollution, and erosion and have directly impacted the Indigenous peoples’ lives. Ancestral land was taken from them, and what was left was severely damaged. It is notable that many Indigenous people served as guides, as they knew where to find the gold but had never placed a high value on the material. Others took on the jobs abandoned by those who’s luck with prospecting had run dry.

Gold panning hot spots in Australia

While we’d love to say that we can lead you towards the most profitable spots to strike gold ―  many point to the “Golden Triangle” of Ballarat, Wedderburn, Taragulla, and Ararat ― industry insiders keep the best locations a secret. Often, those lucky enough to come across gold will give vague details about the location of their finds. Most will offer up the same advice; go to the locations that historically had gold, like the ones heavily populated during the Gold Rush. For the more adventurous, or perhaps more ‘in the know’ prospectors, the more popular Gold Rush spots – Ballarat, Coolgardie, Bendigo and even Melbourne – still have a pull.

As an inexperienced miner, you may prefer to hire a guide or join a tour to aid your quest. Offering up tours in both Victoria and Western Australia, Gold and Relics Gold Prospecting Adventure provides professional guides who gladly pass along insider secrets to all. unfortunately, there’s no guarantee you’ll find gold while under their watch.

Step back in time at Sovereign Hill, Ballarat

Those looking for a more kitschy gold panning experience can head over to Sovereign Hill. It’s an  outdoor museum  that spectacularly recreates the first ten years after the Gold Rush in Ballarat, Victoria. There’s a theatrical light show that guests become a part of while travelling in an open window train around the old gold fields.

Visitors can walk around the streets of Sovereign Hill and interact with costumed prospectors, learning about life during the Gold Rush. Join a fully-guided mine tour, take a ride on a horse-drawn carriage and watch a stunning $160,000 gold pour. You can even immortalise your visit with a fancy-dress portrait, imitating of the locals from more than a century ago. And of course, there’s a whole lot of gold panning fun.

You can even stay at the Sovereign Hill Hotel to fully immerse yourself in life in the 1850s, though with the added bonus of free wifi. Entrance into the museum will also get you access to the Gold Museum just up the road to learn more about the history of the Gold Rush.

The low-down on gold panning

If you want to go it on your own, you’ll have to learn how to actually pan for gold. To do this, you’ll need a pan, a sniffer bottle to help suck up bits of gold from the pan, and some digging tools; a spade or small shovel will suffice. And, of course, you’ll need a little jar to stick your gold findings in.

Make sure you have permission to pan for gold, as no one would be happy to find you trespassing on their land. You’ll need to pick up a Miner’s Right Permit to do any prospecting in Australia. You can easily apply for one online or at some tourist centres.

Then you need to find a good spot to settle down. Choose somewhere known for finding gold, unless your gut instincts are telling you otherwise. The best place to look for gold is in the slowest moving part of the water; because gold is so heavy, it takes a lot of force to move it around, and it settles in the area with the least amount of force. Bends in the water are good places to look. You can also look for concentrates of black sand which gold is known to hide with.

Start by scooping up some material, dumping it in the pan and submerging the pan just below the water’s surface. Take out some of the larger rocks while breaking up the material with your fingers. Shake the pan from side to side and watch as lighter, less valuable, materials float to the top and out of the pan. Eventually, all of the heavier stuff will settle down at the bottle of the pan. And with any luck, you’ll be left with a bit of gold. But don’t be disheartened if all you wind up with is black sand. You can use your sniffer bottle to pick out the little flecks of gold and stick them into your jar. Who knows – this fun gold panning expedition might turn into a life-changing discovery.
