BOOK NOW – FALSE BAY

Yes sharks, whales and dolphins – all in one tour! Take advantage of this fantastic limited introductory offer! This once-off all inclusive Big 5 Marine package, is offered by the longest established and most reliable shark cage diving company in the industry. White Shark Ventures were the pioneers and founders of the shark diving industry with a 29 year accident-free track record. Today we are proud to also add Whale- and Dolphin viewing tours to our portfolio.

Our Combo Tour (also known as the Big 5 Marine tour), therefore consists of the following;

1. GREAT WHITE SHARKS ; Although Gansbaai is known as the “Capital of the Great White Shark”, our tours also offer highly successful dives with Copper Sharks (Bronze Whalers) as well as large stingrays. Our Copper Sharks are fairly large in size and reach lengths of up to 3.5 metres. Same as the Great Whites, Copper Sharks are also inquisitive by nature and like to get up close and personal, right next to the boat and cage.

2. WHALES ; Walker Bay Hermanus/Gansbaai, is known as one of the 12 best whale watching destinations in the world. The best time to enjoy close-up whale viewing is between the months of June to December, when the Southern Right Whales migrate from the Antarctic to calve and mate along our coast. Brydes Whales and Humpback Whales are also often spotted.

3. DOLPHINS ; We have a large resident pod of Common Dolphins in our Bay and they can pretty much be seen all year round. These dolphins are playful and would often swim with the bow of the boat. We also often spot the Bottlenose Dolphin, which is a larger specie and are often seen surfing the waves.

4. CAPE FUR SEALS ; Geyser Rock has a huge population of around 60,000 Cape Fur Seals. The males weigh in at a hefty 200 – 300 kgs, while the females are a little smaller and weigh around 75 kgs. The females give birth between the middle of November and the end of December, when it is pupping season in “Shark Alley”, the narrow channel that runs between Geyser Rock and Dyer Island. Each female will only birth one pup.

5. AFRICAN PENGUINS ; Dyer Island hosts many bird species as well as a colony of African Penguins. Dyer Island used to be the most important breeding site for African penguins in the world, but currently they are struggling to breed successfully. The main reason for this is the historic removal of guano between 1840 and the mid-1900’s. Penguins on the Island in 1978 numbered 70 000 with about 27 000 breeding pairs. African penguins can swim up to 20km/hr, travel 20-40km in a day, and have been recorded at 180m depth!

White Shark diving in Cape Town takes place in False Bay out of Simon’s Town, but it’s seasonal: from June to September, and tends to be the most expensive option.

Gansbaai , the undisputed home of the Great White Shark is a year-round destination. Prices are lower and there’s the additional attraction of whale viewing trips. View Our Gansbaai Summer Special Offer

Mossel Bay is a 4 1/2 hour drive from Cape Town, so not a day trip option, but definitely worth considering. The water is warmer than Gansbaai & Cape Town, and Mossel Bay is also a year-round shark diving destination.

About Shark Cage Diving

Great White Shark cage diving in Cape Town and Gansbaai , South Africa is the number 1 for most on their bucket list! This is one of the greatest experiences that you will ever experience being only inches away from a Great White Shark protected by a steel cage.

Shark Bookings has a selection of the best shark dive trips in the world. Easy to browse and book we specialise in giving you the dream dive with your preferred shark.

The best place in the world for the shark cage diving is Gansbaai at Shark Alley which is a channel of water between two Islands Dyer Island and Geyser Rock, 4 miles offshore from Kleinbaai. Geyser Rock has a huge population of 60,000 Cape Fur seals and Dyer Island hosts many bird species as well as a colony of Penguins. The boats work around both Islands and in the channel where the Great White Sharks roam. Fish heads, Pilchards, Anchovy oil and other fish products are used to entice the sharks to the boat.

The Sharks already in the area and the crew on the boat work hard to attract the sharks and keep them interested in the boat and the divers in the cage rather than looking for prey. Should you wish to see a Great White Shark launch ( breach ) out the water which is famously known in False Bay as ‘Air Jaws’ then Seal Island near Cape Town is the prime place in the world for this.

Our sister company, Marine Dynamics, specialises in fantastic great white shark cage diving experiences, all hosted on our custom built boat by our expert marine biologists.

Great white shark cage diving in South Africa

About White Shark Cage Diving

Welcome to the world-famous Shark Alley, the great white shark capital of the world. We'll take you into the natural home of these incredible apex predators on a trip which is safe, comfortable and will change your life forever.

Team of shark experts

Marine Dynamics is made up of a team of shark enthusiasts, including five marine biologists and a knowledgeable skipper who constantly strive to place shark conservation and education foremost. This is done through educating clients on a daily basis, by conducting research and by maintaining structured marine education and development projects.

Committed to conservation

Marine conservation has historically been grossly neglected and this vacuum in the scientific arena necessitates new, exciting and ongoing research projects to find out more about our precious marine species and the ecosystems in which they live. And this is exactly what we do!

Focus on education

Shark education features as a prominent part of our activities. It is only by getting to know these complex creatures more intimately, that we will understand the impact of their current continuing decline. Therefore, education plays a pivotal role in our shark cage diving excursions.

Diving – So… you want an eyeball to eyeball encounter with a Great White Shark in South Africa?

Boy, you are in for much, much more than that on board Slashfin! Our marine biologists and  expert crew members  will not only show you where these mysterious and misunderstood apex predators hunt and hide, but they will also explain to you how and where they feed, breed and breach.

Going Great White Shark Diving in South Africa and more specifically a trip on the Slashfin, is  a combination of goosebump thrills, education and relaxation  on a luxury boat in the company of experienced experts and researchers! They will show you how to distinguish between a male and female shark and how to identify a specific shark by its unique dorsal fin and scars. The 20 – 25 minute boat trip to where the activity is to take place, is by itself an exhilarating adventure.

Named after a legendary 3,3 m male shark with a very distinctive dorsal fin, the  Slashfin  is a unique, multi-million rand aluminium boat custom designed for speed, stability, safety and space and can comfortably accommodate 40 passengers and the crew at a time.

On any given day, we also usually see at least two or more members of the  Marine Big Five – sharks, dolphins, whales, seals and penguins , as well as several bird species.

White Shark Cage Diving: Frequently Asked Questions

What can you tell me about the cage.

Taking the plunge to actually  get into the cage  can be a bit scary if it is your first introduction to the iconic top-predators of the ocean, but rest assured. It is extremely unlikely that a shark will be able to break into a cage, or will be more interested in you than the juicy tuna head or decoy that our expert bait handler throws into the water to lure them closer.  The bait is not fed to the sharks  – it is merely used to entice them to come closer to the cage and is pulled back before they can get to it. Never in the 15 years of the business has a Great White Shark shown anything but mere cautious curiosity in any of the tourists in the cages!

  • The sturdy steel cage is professionally engineered and made out of a 25mm galvanised mild steel covered with 10mm galvanised mild steel security mesh.
  • It has no sharp edges on which a shark can injure itself.
  • The cage is firmly secured to the side of the boat and divers can easily get out whenever they want to.
  • The cage never sinks or floats away.
  • The cage can accommodate 7 divers at a time
  • The steel hand and foot bars inside the cage offer ample grip and support to pull yourself up or to push down.
  • Your head will never be more than a metre under the surface and you can decide when and how long you want to stay underwater.

What happens on each trip?

  • Before the trip guests meet at the  Great White House  in Kleinbaai
  • You will receive breakfast or lunch and register your wetsuit size
  • Guests receive a pre-trip safety briefing about what to expect during the trip and a biological background on great white sharks
  • We then take a 200m stroll down to the harbour to board Slashfin
  • Travel time to Dyer Island is approximately 20 minutes, with the shallows being a short 10 minute ride (where we anchor depends on where the sharks are)
  • On average, we anchor for 2 hours, but this depends on shark activity, conditions, as well as number of divers
  • Weather permitting, we take a quick trip through the infamous Shark Alley
  • Lastly, a debrief in the Great White House and a celebratory beverage to toast the occasion!

Why is the boat called Slashfin?

The name ‘Slashfin’ was inspired by the tenacious survival instincts and healing powers of a  legendary 3,3m young male shark  that grabbed the imagination of shark researchers who followed his migrating patterns and recovery over a number of years.

Dubbed Slashfin after the severe damage caused to his dorsal fin  – probably by a propeller or an unfortunate encounter with other sharks – the shark cage diving community was able to identify him and follow his recovery for over six years during his annual visits to the Dyer Island area between March and July. The fin used to be shredded to pieces and the researchers were astonished to see how well it healed so that now it is only distinguished by two parallel scars.

Slashfin has grown by at least 1 and a half metres since he was first spotted in the Gansbaai area. He is still a famous and favourite annual visitor to our waters and who knows, he may even be aware that he has been immortalised on our boat!

Shark cage diving in Gansbaai, South Africa with Marine Dynamics. Experience the exceptional and come face to face with a great white shark!

The exact world record white shark is a contested issue, but chances are it is between 6-7m. In Gansbaai, the largest white shark ever caught was at Danger Point and measured up to 5.9m.

If you see a white shark in the water don’t panic. Chances are high that the shark has already detected you and isn’t interested. White shark attacks are normally associated with poor visibility, so avoid murky conditions.

White sharks have a unique system called a “counter current heat exchange”, which keeps their body  tempreture +/- 7C above the surrounding water temperature.

All sharks have an incredibly unique system on the tip of their nose called the “ampillae of Lorenzini”. These are small pores filled with a gel that transmits the electrical currents in the water to the shark’s brain so that it can assess its environment.

White sharks give birth to live young (not eggs), and they give birth to 6-8 pups at one time. Pups are usually between 1.0-1.5m in length and are born with teeth.

Body language has been a well documented form of shark communication and has identified body arching, jaw gaping, and other postures as specific social tactics.

  • Great White Shark diving & breaching Tour

Africa's best authentic tailor-made safaris

Team Member Headshot

By Devryn Panaino

Safari Travel Planner

See the spectacular breaching behaviour of great white sharks as they hunt for Cape fur seals in False Bay, or go cage diving to get up close.

Great white shark diving and viewing expeditions operating out of Simon’s Town harbour on the Cape Peninsula are designed to show you some of the most spectacular behaviour seen anywhere in the animal kingdom, and to educate you on the white shark behaviour you’ll see at Seal Island. Seal Island has become world-famous for its breaching great whites that hunt some of the 64,000 Cape fur seals that live there.

You can also go cage diving to see the sharks up close.

All companies and boats comply with all safety requirements. They take small groups of 6–12 people to enhance your experience of seeing great white sharks and in an uncrowded environment. The crews can interact easily with guests and share their knowledge.

Note that these excursions are seasonal and weather dependent.

Great white shark morning trip The main focus of the morning tour is on a natural interaction with the sharks. We try to treat these animals with the respect they deserve and to share our passion for them with you.

Great white shark afternoon trip As with trips offered at Gansbaai, the sole focus of this afternoon trip is cage diving and surface viewing. Although you stand a chance of seeing the natural predation and breaching, this behaviour mostly takes place in the early morning so your chances of viewing this aren’t as good as on the morning excursion. But cage diving and surface viewing are more than enough to get you excited.

Cape Fur Seals on Black Rocks, Bird Island Group, Algoa Bay

Black Rocks, one of 4 islands in the Bird Island group of islands, is home to an amazingly dense population of over 7000 Cape Fur Seals that breed on this fragmented fortress against the seas. The presence of these seals is the key that attracts a population of Great White Sharks to this part of the bay.

The first permit to watch these sharks from the safety of a boat was recently issued to local whale watching and eco cruise operator in Port Elizabeth. This has opened a welcome activity in our bay in the form of Great White Shark viewing and later cage diving at these pristine islands. Alan Tours in collaboration with the local charter company offers this marine safari of a lifetime.

Algoa Bay itself has a huge diversity of marine life, Seasonal Great Whales in the form of the Southern Right and Humpback Whales with the permanent resident, the Bryde’s whale forming the back bone of the whale watching, while the bay has become known as the Bottlenose Dolphin capital of the world with an estimated 22 thousand Bottlenose Dolphins using the bay as well as a permanent population of the endangered Humpback Dolphin and at certain time huge pods of the common dolphins can be seen harvesting the rich bait balls that are formed when the pelagic Sardines and Pilchards arrive in our Autumn months.

Bottlenose Dolphins, Algoa Bau, Port Elizabeth

With this diversity in mind we meet you at your place of residence at 6:45 am and drive you to the small boat harbour in Port Elizabeth. Here we prepare for an exciting day on the waters of Algoa Bay. After the safety briefing, we set sail in a south easterly direction, pass Cape Recife and its Lighthouse.

Cape Recife lighthouse, Aloga Bay, Port Elizabeth, South Africa

Our route is designed to take us into the seasonal migration path of the Humpback Whales as they make their way either further north when they first arrive or on their return journey after they leave the northern extent of their migration to return back into the waters of the Southern Ocean and Antarctica itself.

These Whales will often be seen breaching, tail and fin slapping or simply cruising passed our boat providing us with amazing sightings of these gigantic creatures.

great white shark boat tours south africa

Once we get into the path of the migration, we change course and head north east, following their path as we set course for Bird Island. It will take about 3 hours at sea to arrive at the islands, taking into consideration time spent stopping to watch the wildlife en route.

On arrival at Bird Island we set anchor in the lee of Black Rocks and the seal colony for this is where we are likely to find the Great Whites lurking in wait for any unwary seals. It will take around 30 minutes for the sharks to scent the presence of the boat and come closer to investigate the intruder to their waters. While we wait, we take a light lunch and refreshment on board the boat.

Once the Great Whites arrive, there is a sense of excitement, intoxicated by the presence of these apex predators, we watch, as they circle the boat sometimes coming right up and touching the vessel; there is a focus, a sense of being drawn in, to the primordial power of these predators that find themselves at the very peak of the evolutionary scale.

great white shark boat tours south africa

We spend between an hour to two hours here before packing up and running back home along the incredibly beautiful Woody Cape dune fields, a vast expanse of aeolian or shifting dunes, as we make our way parallel to the coast to the largest Island in the Bay, St Croix. It is while running along the coastline that we can anticipate spotting a pod or two of Bottlenose Dolphins surfing the shore break along the coast.

There is a good possibility of getting some great photo opportunities with these playful marine mammals breaching through the back of the sunlit swells.

Woody Cape Dune Fields

We soon arrive at St Croix with its breeding colony of African penguins and in most cases a pod of Bottlenose dolphins.

After staying at this island for a while, we make our final run back to the harbour after an exhilarating day on the ocean in one of the wildest places left on this planet.

After getting your shore legs back we board the tour vehicle and return to your overnight accommodation or your choice of restaurant for a meal and the end of the tour.

About Bird Island

Tucked into the north eastern corner of Algoa Bay, the largest eroded bay on the African continent, is a small group of 4 islands collectively known as the Bird Island group. This group of islands are 62 Kilometers across the bay from Port Elizabeth and 8 km from the mainland at Woody Cape.

The islands, especially Bird Island, are steeped in myth and legend with the bones of many ship, the sailors that manned the ship as well as any number of crew and passengers who have come unstuck against the jagged, low lying islands that lie so close to the northern shore of the bay.

great white shark boat tours south africa

The proud red and white Lighthouse was built in 1852 and stands as a beckon of hope to guide shipping into the protected waters of the bay as well as to warn these ships of the immediate danger of this crusty group of islands.

The Islands themselves form part of the South African National Parks and are an extension of the Addo Elephant National Park and fall under the management of this massively diverse national park. Where in the past there were generations of Fishermen, Whalers, Sealers, Penguin guano scrappers and people sent out to collect penguin eggs for the wealthy tables in Port Elizabeth and further afield in Cape Town and even Johannesburg. Each successive wave of harvesters reaped the resources above and below the waterline, leaving the islands a poorer place each time.

A reprieve has now been issued to the islands where the steadying hand of science and the guardians of our natural resources have taken over to keep a keen watch on the area and so prevent to the best of their ability any further decimation of the rich resources that lie like treasure awaiting to be discovered by modern day adventurers on non-intrusive tours to discover this untamed corner of Africa.

The material from which these islands were formed was laid down around 500 million years ago when a rift valley started opening up when the supercontinent of Gondwana started breaking up due to tectonic plate movement. This rift left a shallow sea between the mainland, later Africa, and the retreating Falkland Plateau. This shallow sea was then filled with silicates washed down from huge mountains; taller than even the Himalayans are today by massive weather events that carried huge quantities of soil into this shallow sea. The basin filled up with these silicates and was once again forced up under immense pressure by the approaching South American plate that slowly swiped past the emerging African continent. Here the earth’s crust was forced up into a series of folds, creating what is today known as the Cape Fold Mountains. These mountains, formed in a west to east axis, stretch from north of Cape Town to just east of Port Elizabeth and it is from these weather resistant quartzites that the islands of Algoa Bay are formed.

Southern Right Whale, Alan Tours

The main island, Bird Island, is home to the lighthouse, some Guano scrappers cottages and the largest Gannetry on the planet with a count of around 120 thousand breeding pairs of Cape Gannets the island is also an important breeding site for the African Roseate Term as well as the endangered African penguin. It is also an important breeding site for the rare African black oyster catcher.

All About Great White Shark Tours

Great white shark tours'  brian mcfarlane.

Owner and founder Brian McFarlane was a professional diver and skipper and has always made a living from the sea. He started diving for perlemoen (abalone) at a young age, then moved on to become a commercial fisherman for 6 years and spent another 6 years diving in search of wrecks along the southern coast of Africa. This was followed by the diving for diamonds from the seabed for the next 20 years.

Brian has become a local legend with his fascinating tales of the sea and his underwater experiences. During the time when Great White Shark fishing was still allowed, Brian caught Great White Sharks, some weighing more than 1 ton. Today, he dearly regrets this and now spends his time and effort in finding the great beasts to be observed and photographed at close range.

Brian has worked with the Great White Sharks for 23  years and has an uncanny ability to attract sharks.

Brian McFarlane, owner, and founder of the shark cage diving company, Great White Shark Tours,  believes that....

  • Every tourist who dives is entitled to have a great white shark swim past him or her an acceptable number of times, even though this means that the average trip length may be longer than other operators.
  • Although not going to sea day Brian will be personally involved in the shark cage diving operation. The waters around Shark Alley is Brian McFarlane’s territory, having dived there numerous times, he knows it well.

This, in turn, gives rise to his vision statement of:

Great White Shark motto

MEET OUR CREW & STAFF

Great White Shark Tours have an outstanding reputation for providing excellent friendly and helpful service. This is thanks to the quality of the people they employ. We work as one unit with staff in different areas. We have both land and sea crew and office staff. All boat crew are trained as Level 3 First Aiders.

The crew is all in possession of the necessary qualifications and certifications in safety and procedures to make your time at sea safe and memorable. Brian McFarlane (founder and owner), now in semi-retirement, still occasionally takes   Apex Predator  to sea. On most trips, you will be left in the capable hands of Skipper   Anthony who has been with us for the past 11 years.

You will also be able to learn a lot from Gert an experienced commercial fisherman who is our master bait operator who knows how to attract the sharks. He is also a keen fisherman and has a lot of stories to tell about his experiences on the sea. He has been with Great White Shark tours for 17 years.

Eric has been with the company for 16 years, is a competent divemaster and will ensure you are properly briefed prior to entering the cage.

Someone has to get the sharks closer to the boat and this is Dira our master chummer who attracts the sharks by the smell of the bait and ensures a constant flow of chum. He has learned his skill from his brother Happy who is our safety officer on board.

Albert joined Great White Shark tours a couple of years ago and is responsible for your comfort and will fit you with the correct size wetsuits. In addition, he is our qualified Marine Eco Guide and will answer all your questions about sharks, birds and whales in the area.

Hennie is the onboard videographer on every trip. He will be the guy behind the video camera, capturing all the action. Back on land, he will screen the trip footage and give you an opportunity to purchase your trip memories on a video link. Alternatively, when you book online, he will send you a link FREE  OF CHARGE.   On land, we have Lee who ensures that the boat is kept in a spotlessly clean condition.  He joined the company in 2003 and loves his work, always giving 110% with a smile.  He is in charge of keeping the wetsuits, life jackets, raincoats, etc., clean and dry.

The onshore office is run by Letitia who was has been with us for the past12 years and is the mother hen who ensures that everything and everybody performs at 100% levels.

Chrissie (12 years’ service) and Amelia (previously our marketing consultant) are our front of house Public Relations ladies who are responsible for bookings and liaison with clients.

Annie   (5 years’ service) is responsible for preparing the healthy meals enjoyed by clients both before and after each trip.

Kabier conveying our clients in a luxury coach. He may be the first staff member you meet when collecting you from Cape Town or Hermanus should you elect to make use of our personalized collection and delivery service. He is a qualified and authorized coach driver.

All the staff and crew will be responsible for your time at the project. You will get to know them and be a part of this wonderful team.

Shark Cage Diving Cape Town – the Safe Way

Our shark cage is constructed with galvanized steel and certified by a registered engineer. Further to this the South African cage-diving industry is regulated by a code of conduct and regulations from the Marine and Coastal Management DFFE – Department of Forest and Fisheries. Our equipment meets all the required safety standards and the experience of our crew ensures that you’re in good hands.

No experience is required to shark cage dive. We use the breath-hold technique as visibility can be limited and eyeball time with the animals underwater usually only lasts a few seconds at a time.  Our experienced and professional crew will give you direction to ensure maximum shark viewing whilst cage diving. A hookah scuba system is available upon request. Please indicate when making your booking.

Boat-Based Viewing

If you don’t want to get wet, the boat-based viewing is excellent as many of the sharks swim at the surface. Our surface viewing deck offers 360-degrees view. and our enclosed cabin offers cover and protection from the elements.  As the boat-based viewing is equal if not better than the cage dive, divers and non-divers pay the same price for the shark trip.

  • Wetsuits, masks and snorkels are disinfected, rinsed in fresh water and dried before every use.
  • Each guest will receive equipment that has been thoroughly disinfected and rinsed
  • Upon removal of wetsuits, booties, gloves, masks and snorkels, all items are immediately put into a disinfectant solution
  • Each piece of equipment is only used once per day
  • Guests are not allowed to share any equipment or towels that belong to Apex Shark Expeditions.

Safety First

  • All shark cage diving is done under the supervision of an experienced crew who have first aid & oxygen management, scuba & commercial skippers’ qualifications and expert knowledge of the behaviour of sharks around the cage
  • The cage is designed to float, leaving a freeboard of about 30cm (about one foot). The cage is solidly attached to the side of the boat by two thick ropes that prevent the cage from drifting away and equipped with several independent flotation devices which keep it buoyant
  • Our cage has been designed to ensure there are no sharp edges on which a shark can injure itself in the event one should touch the cage accidentally
  • The shark cage we use is a surface cage. It is not a submersible shark cage. Our crews are close to the cage at all times and will ensure any guest in distress is quickly and safely removed from the cage.
  • You may end your shark cage dive at any time as we operate surface cages only. Your head is never more than half a meter below the surface and you can decide when and how long you want to stay underwater
  • Specially designed doors ensure ease of access for divers. Getting into the cage is as simple as stepping off the boat
  • Our cage comfortably accommodates a GoPro camera and is equipped with steel hand and foot bars inside offering grip and stability when filming

great white shark boat tours south africa

When making a booking for shark cage diving Cape Town South Africa, it is important to have you have realistic expectations.

If you want to see a specific shark, we’ll happily advise you on the best times to book for the best chance of seeing that shark species.

By being flexible, you have the best chance of great shark interactions rather than just a fleeting glimpse, if we only offered just one species. All of the species we focus on are large, powerful and active predators sure to give you an incredible once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Seen all year round by our shark cage diving boats, the Bronze Whaler shark is a large and powerful predator. Reaching 3.3 meters (11 feet) long and weighing about 305 kilograms (672 lbs.) this is a fast-moving shark.

They are known to be somewhat aggressive to humans when they sense food or prey close by. And though they usually remain solitary, these sharks will often form groups to hunt prey more effectively.

They eat cephalopods like squid, cuttlefish, and octopus, also bony fish like catfish, salmon, tuna, sardines, and anchovies, then cartilaginous fish like dogfish sharks, stingrays, skates, electric rays, and sawfish.

They don’t typically hunt marine mammals, but they will feed on the carcass of dolphin when found. The South African population follows the famous Sardine Run every winter. This prey gathers in their millions and as a result, they attract a variety of predators including many species of shark.

In such cases where prey is abundant, these sharks will form groups and herd the sardines into a tight ball (bait-ball). They then take turns swimming through these balls with their mouths open to feed.

Though the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists the Bronze whaler as  Near Threatened  worldwide, their conservation status still varies depending on the specific locality in question.

  • Seven gill Cow Shark Seven gill sharks are mostly seen in our winter months, and are the ancient undertakers of the sea. Growing to at least 10 feet these massive sharks with their disproportionately large heads filled with heavily serrated hex comb-cutting teeth are the dinosaurs of the deep. There are few places on earth where they occur in shallow water with reasonable visibility. False Bay is one such location, and this is one of the great shark species we see on many of our expeditions into False Bay.
  • Great White Shark The Great white shark sightings have been highly variable since 2017. That said, due to our flexible options of booking all three Great white hotspots, we can advise on the best location that will give you the best great white shark encounter possible. Historically mid- June to end of July is the best time period for Great white sharks.
  • Blue and Mako Shark The Open Ocean is a realm that is visited by few. It is in this inky blue world of free ranging nomads where two great shark species, the Mako and Blue sharks, ply their trade. The scenery is breath-taking as you pass Cape Point and The Cape of Good Hope and before long, you see your first albatross as you head out into the open ocean. Curious, sometimes bold, and incredibly beautiful, Mako and Blue sharks are the apex predators of the open ocean.
  • Common Dolphin Common dolphin pods are usually seen from March to July and can be seen feeding on bait fish. We occasionally see Bottlenose and Dusky dolphins.
  • Southern Right Whale From August to November up to 3,500 Southern Right whales mate and give birth along the South African coast. Humpback whales may also occasionally be seen.
  • Brydes Whale These whales are endemic and can be seen all year round although they are shy and usually keep their distance.
  • African Penguin Boulders Beach is home to 3,500 African Penguins and we pass by this colony on our voyage to Cape Point. We often encounter hunting parties of penguins out on feeding sorties. There are a few African Penguins that live on Seal Island. It is rather odd to see these creatures living amongst so many seals. Perhaps they lost their way.

Remember this is a guideline only and that sightings on any trip can never be guaranteed – we’re sure you’ll appreciate that working with sharks is as wild as it gets!

The day before confirmation and shark species will depend on weather conditions. All trips are confirmed weather dependent and are not shark species-dependent.

  • Dress in layers as it can get very chilly at sea. We advise a warm weather jacket, sneakers or closed shoes, a beanie and a hat/cap
  • Polarized sunglasses – these help to block the glare thereby increasing sightings of the sharks from the boat. They also provide protection from harmful UV rays
  • If you are prone to the cold. a rash vest will help with extra insulation
  • Water Bottle
  • Lip-ice and Sunscreen SPF 50 – the African sun is beautiful but harsh
  • Camera, of course! GoPros are great for stills and videos and are easy to handle in the shark cage. Bring an extra SD card. You’re going to need it!
  • For those with poor eyesight, we advise wearing contact lenses whilst cage diving with sharks. If you own a prescription mask, please bring it with you
  • If you are prone to motion sickness, we recommend Sturgeo n  or Dramamine. Take one the night before your trip and another an hour before the meet time.
  • For your own enjoyment of the trip, we recommend that you do not overindulge in alcohol the night before as this may result in being very seasick the next day.

Day 1: Cape Town to Gansbaai – South Africa

Our shark cage diving adventure sets off early this morning, collecting passengers from central locations in Cape Town city. Leaving the scenic city behind we drive to Gansbaai, about two and a half hours away. Located in the Overberg Region, Gansbaai is the top great white shark cage diving destination in South Africa .

On this picturesque drive, we cross the Hottentots-Holland Mountains, passing pretty lakes and farmlands in the lush countryside of the Western Cape Province. We travel along the rugged coastline to Hermanus, one of the best places for land-based whale watching on the planet. From this famous whale watching destination, we continue to the fishing town of Gansbaai, where our Great White Shark Diving Adventure takes place. We make our way to the Kleinbaai harbour of Gansbaai - the 'Great White Capital of South Africa'.

Arriving at our well-equipped headquarters a continental breakfast is served with tea or coffee. Before the boat trip, an in-depth briefing about great white sharks, the dive and safety procedures is held at the centre. Then we take to the sea in our custom-built catamaran and embark on the 25-minute journey to Dyer Island, where we drop anchor. The exact anchoring point and thus the duration of the boat trip depends on shark activity on the day.

Next, the specially designed stainless steel cage is lowered into the water, about a metre below the surface, where it stays firmly secured to the boat. It's time to put on your designated wetsuit, booties, hoodie, weight belt and mask, and prepare for your dive. This is where the adrenalin rush kicks in!

The crew helps you into the cage where your head stays above water until you decide to go underwater to watch the sharks swimming past. When a shark is spotted approaching, the crew on the boat raises the alarm and you dive down under the water's surface to see the graceful predator up close, deciding exactly how long you want to keep your head underwater. Great white sharks are regularly spotted off Dyer Island year-round with a success rate of about 99% on this trip.

We spend about two hours out at sea, fortified with drinks and snacks (bread rolls, chips, cold drinks and hot chocolate). The sturdy cage holds eight people comfortably allowing everyone to spend as much time as possible viewing the sharks underwater. When not submerged in the water, you can watch the sharks from the spacious upper and lower decks, offering unrivalled views and unobstructed photographic opportunities. After your thrilling encounter with the great white sharks, we take a quick trip through Shark Alley, weather permitting. Shark Alley is renowned for the abundance of sharks drawn to the channel to prey on the Cape Fur Seals of Geyser Rock - a breeding colony of about 60000 seals.

Back on shore hot soup and bread is served beside the cosy fireplace and heaters, during the debriefing and great white shark conservation roundup. Afterwards, you are free to relax and explore Kleinbaai and the rest of Gansbaai. Our guesthouse accommodation is at the headquarters, or nearby, so you can enjoy dinner (own expense) at the a la carte restaurant or in town.

Day 2: Gansbaai to Cape Town – South Africa

After a hearty breakfast at the guesthouse, we walk down to the natural harbour of Kleinbaai and board the catamaran for our second shark cage diving trip. In addition to great whites, two or more of the other Marine Big Five animals (dolphins, whales, seals and penguins) are usually spotted on the trip, along with several marine bird species.

Taking to the sea again we motor out to Dyer Island for more close-up great white shark encounters. Some of these sharks reach over four metres in length!

After our morning adventure, we return to the centre for hot soup and bread and a debriefing. Then it is time to head back to Cape Town , where you are dropped off at a central location in the city, bringing this unforgettable shark cage diving adventure in South Africa , to an end.

The Diving Boat, Cage & Gear

This tour is conducted in a custom-built shark cage diving boat designed for safety, stability, comfort and speed. This 46 foot (14m) long catamaran features a spacious upper deck for surface views of the sharks and other marine animals, and two platforms for the bait and decoy handlers to ensure the best possible shark viewing. This lightweight aluminium vessel is powered by four big four-stroke 300 hp outboard engines and is equipped with the most advanced electronic navigation equipment. The unique boat features a central food area, storage facilities for personal items and both male and female toilets.

The state-of-the-art shark diving cage is 4.5m long and 2.5m deep, comfortably accommodating eight divers at a time. The professionally engineered cage is made of stainless steel, consisting of 25mm² tubing covered in 6mm security mesh with 160mm spacing. The cage remains securely fixed to the boat and is covered with two lids, providing a safe, comfortable and spacious viewing environment.

With over 150 wetsuits on hand, a clean and dry wetsuit is guaranteed on this trip. Clients are also provided with a high-quality mask, hoodie, weight belt and booties for the dive, as well as a clean, dry towel.

What to Bring:

We recommend taking the following items on your trip: warm weatherproof clothing, anti-seasickness tablets, sunscreen, hat, camera and binoculars.

Children of all ages are welcome on the boat if conditions allow, and children are under the complete supervision of their parents. great white shark boat tours south africa

A A boat ride taking less than 20 minutes will take you to “Shark Alley” near Gansbaai in the Western Cape. South Africa is one of the best Great White shark cage-diving destinations in the world as it's the only country where it’s relatively easy to see Great White sharks.

Of the 100-odd shark species swimming in South African waters, it is the Great White shark that has captured the imagination – their size alone has often been based on myth!

F F ear of these creatures led to them being hunted, but in 1991 South Africa proclaimed the Great White a protected species and became the first country in the world to introduce Great White shark conservation. A big part of this was the switch from shark hunting to shark tourism, and the Great White shark is now officially a protected and thriving species.

Great White shark tours are offered in other locations around the coast of South Africa, other than just Gansbaai. Operators have to have a permit and licensed boats in order to operate this type of business and to ensure you are in safe hands. These are checked regularly to ensure their equipment is in peak working condition. Great White sharks remain vulnerable outside South African waters, where shark hunters and fishermen still target them.

Flying Great White Sharks One Day Tour, Seal Island - South Africa Diving - Dive Discovery South Africa

From Cindi:

The current situation for visitors to South Africa- False Bay, breaching Great White Sharks: “We are not seeing reliable great white sharks for a couple years now since the Orca’s came in. We are hoping soon this situation will change and they will come back to Seal Rock where they breach so tourists can once again enjoy these amazing encounters!”

Great White Shark Cage Diving, South Australia »

False Bay - Cage Diving and Great White Shark Breaching

False Bay is unique in that it is one of the very few places in the world where shark breaching takes place - that is when Great White Sharks hunt seals and launch themselves clean out of the water in their pursuit of their prey. It is spectacular to witness and happens frequently in a morning, but only during a short and very defined season, between June and end August/early September.

False Bay has the following shark activity seasons:

Intermediate Season: February - 14 April Cage Diving and Surface Viewing only

High Season: 15 April - end May Shark Cage Diving plus possibility of breaching and natural predation

Peak Season: June - end August Shark Cage Diving plus breaching and natural predation

Intermediate Season: 01 September - 15 September Cage Diving and Surface Viewing

Closed: 16 September - 31 January

  • Only 40 minutes from Cape Town hotels
  • Later pick up times, between 5 am and 6 am
  • Location means that the shark experience can be combined with a half day Peninsula Tour
  • Only two boat licenses issued, so a more exclusive experience
  • Scuba gear is used - no qualification is necessary. The scuba equipment remains on the board and only the scuba hose enters the cage allowing the guests to enjoy the dive without the cumbersome, heavy tanks and gear.
  • The only area to experience breaching (when the Great White Shark launches itself out of the water in pursuit of seals). This is at its peak between June and August, and doesn't occur much out of these months.

Disadvantages of False Bay Great White Shark Experience:

  • No shark experience in summer, between September and January
  • More expensive than the Gansbaai experience
  • Limited availability

GREAT WHITE SHARK BREACHING IN FALSE BAY - ITINERARY

Only operates June to beginning September

You will be picked up this morning from your hotel and transferred to the launch site in False Bay. Collection is at 06:00 with launch at 07:00. You will join your skipper, a qualified shark expert for a briefing before setting off for Seal Island. Scientists have acknowledged that great white sharks behave differently in False Bay at Seal Island to anywhere else along the South African coastline. This is mostly due to the ideal topographical structure around the island, allowing for stealth and attack and therefore “flying” out of the water after their prey.

On arrival at the island around sunrise you will spend the first 1 - 1.5 hours watching the natural predation activity and trying to get the sharks to breach on the decoy seal. Breaching is spectacular and involves the Great White Shark launching its body clear out of the water to attack fleeing Cape Fur Seals. From around half 9 to 12:00 we will anchor the boat at the island and you will have the opportunity to cage dive should you so wish. You will return to the harbour around 2pm. Refreshments are served on board the boat. You will be transferred back to your hotel in Cape Town.
