A February trip to Greece

February, and all of winter, is considered to be the low season in Greece. As it’s an unpredictable month in terms of weather, it’s not the most common time to visit.

Many Greek islands, like Santorini and Mykonos , are very quiet. The summer resorts and many restaurants around the country are closed.

Gray skies, rain, wind and thunderstorms are fairly common in February, with some regions being drier than others. Chances for snowfall are high, not only up on the mountains, but also in the cities.

T here is no bad time to visit Greece. If you are considering booking a trip for Greece in February, why not?

Even the colder winter months have their own kind of charm. Just think of small villages on hilltops and the smell of firewood coming through the chimneys. The bliss that is a day spend at a hot springs resort, or the coziness of a warm soup or beverage in a traditional taverna, with people coming together to eat, drink and dance.

While it’s true that you don’t need bathing suits and sunshine to have fun in Greece, you may actually find that February can be a great month in terms of weather as well. While, you won’t be going to the beach or working on your tan, you can explore and discover the sights pleasantly. Greece in February has some top destination options that we cannot wait for you to discover an array of activity options whether you are an explorer or someone that prefers boutique hotels and charming eateries without too much physical activity.

February in mainland, Northern Greece is often the time when temperatures are at their lowest.

With summer season pushing into late September, and December offering not-yet-freezing temperatures, February can be what winter enthusiasts wait for all year around. The area of Greece known as Pindus takes up most of the northern part and is often referred to as the spine of Greece.

It is the biggest and longest mountain range in the country and has peaks that reach 2.637 meters. Popular both for hiking and skiing, Pindus dominates the landscape starting from the northwestern border with Albania and traversing diagonally and down.

The mountains of Parnassus, Giona, Oeta and Vardousia further down in Central Greece are also considered to have once been a part of the Pindus Range.

greece travel in february

Winter is one of my favourite times to explore Greece.

Small villages high up in the mountains come alive and the heavy touch of snow in some areas, adds another layer of charm to the cobblestone streets. The smell of chestnuts becomes overpoweringly sweet and fireplaces are filled to the brim, spreading the aroma of pine and beechwood. This might just be personal preference, but nothing warms up your appetite for warm soups, hearty meat dishes and local wine better, than below zero temperatures.

A typical view of the Pindus area and surrounding mountains, only without the snow!

Northern Greece is mottled with villages that offer all the above. Charming guesthouses, warm fireplaces, traditional meals and mountains waiting to be explored. Always popular amongst locals, are the villages of Zagori or Zagorohoria in the Pindus area.

Forty-six villages in total, similar in architecture and style, impossible to see all at once. The eager visitor will need to expect a second or third visit to fully explore the area.

For those looking for a more adventurous winter experience, hiking in the area might be an option, depending on the weather and your skill level.

Local guides and expert advice regarding weather and suitable track conditions should always be obeyed . The mountains, while pretty, can be very challenging to non-experienced hikers and weather conditions could disguise the landscape significantly.

There are of course other mainland destinations that you can visit in February as well. That might allow you to skip the cold and snow, or you might just prefer non-mainland destinations. When we talk about island destinations, it is important to keep in mind that the biggest the island the easiest you will be able to arrange air or sea transport and the lesser the chance for weather changes to affect your trip. Santorini, for example, is a great destination for February if you commit to giving yourself at least one week on the island. That way you will get at least a few days of sun so you can explore the narrow alleyways and take pictures in peace. But even Santorini, with a healthy all year population of 20,000 and an ever-increasing number of winter tourism can be affected by harsh winds making it difficult for ferries to dock or cancelling their routes altogether.

If a ferry is cancelled due to weather conditions know that depending on the company that you have booked with, you are usually entitled to a cancellation and full refund or a modification to an alternative date. Additional charges may apply. FerryScanner has a great interface and simple design for booking your ferry tickets and a very responsive team. Always check the fine print when booking with other companies, especially during the off-season. Of course, when you book through a travel agent or if we are arranging your trip, those details will be dealt with for you.

Travelling by ferry?

Embark on a delightful water adventure by booking your ferry tickets effortlessly using the form below.

Another mainland destination that is worth exploring in depth is the city of Kalamata . Located in the Peloponnese region of southern Greece, which looks like the palm of the hand, the Peloponnese is known as the home of the Spartans and where the Olympic Games first became a thing thousands of years ago. Nowadays, Kalamata will probably bring to mind olives and olive oil production, but in addition to good food, visitors will find a city that is bursting with activities and things to do.

The Mediterranean climate of the region brings warm and humid summers and long and often wet winters with temperatures ranging between 5 and 15 degrees Celsius. In February you can expect at least 12 days of rain during the month and a few clouds but from my experience, there are just as many warm and sunny days that more than makeup for it. The city is the perfect combination of mountains and sea, with the marina and beaches on one hand and the engulfing presence of Mt Taygetus dominating the landscape in the other.

The cafe and bar scene in Kalamata is truly engaging, with plenty of interesting options to keep you entertained.

Aristomenous street in the centre of the town is where everyone stops for a stroll, a cofffee and some shopping. From exploring the museums, to learning more about the cultural heritage, visiting ancient Messinia or tasting the local produce, there will be plenty to keep you occupied in the area.

In addition to winter activities and excursions, February might also be a great month to experience cultural and religious festivities all around Greece.

Preparations for Easter begin far in advance and depending on when Easter Sunday is on that year, celebrations can begin as early as February.

Greeks all around the world celebrate the “opening of the Triodion” a peculiar expression that might be easier understood if I tell you that the Triodion is a liturgical book of the Greek Orthodox Church.

The Triodion sets out the propers for the three-week fasting period before the Sarakosti (Great Lent) as well as the 40 day Great Lent period and the Great and Holy Week.

This year will see us celebrating Easter Sunday on the 19th of April 2020.

Τhat means the Triodion will open on Sunday the 9 th of February 2020.

So, what happens then? The first three weeks that will follow are each dedicated to something specific and for those that follow the Christian faith, odes to be sang each day.

One of the most celebrated dates in modern times, however, is Tsiknompeti, which directly translates to tsikna (the thick smell of grilled fatty meat) and Thursday. And yes, it is celebrated on a Thursday.

Every corner of every village and every balcony or terrace of every apartment building in Greece is covered in barbeque grills and thick waves of meaty smoke. Why is that important?

Traditionally, the consumption of meat is discouraged on Wednesdays and Fridays, making Thursday the ideal day to celebrate.

It is also the last chance for people to stock up on their meat-eating, before fasting from animal products, including dairy as well as any other human pleasures.

The second week of the Triodion is called Apokries or Carnival. Both names of which relate to the no meat-eating practices.

Greek – apo kreas – without meat

Latin – carnem levare –meat remove

Carnival celebrations are officially discouraged by the Orthodox Church due to their pagan origins, however, elaborate costume-wearing, masks, parades, street events and pranks are all very common.

Festivals are organized in advance in many cities around Greece, the most known of which is in Patra. It attracts thousands of people from all around Greece and Europe each year.

Cinedoc Festival (Athens + Other Locations) – This annual documentary festivals takes place in Athens , Thessaloniki and a handful of other cities around Greece that are increasing each year. The dates vary but it usually spans a five month period starting in mid autumn and finishing in early spring. You will find screenings of some of the best international and Greek documentary productions of the year.

2nd February – Santorini Panigiri – Panigiria are festivities that celebrate the name day of a saint. They are very common in the summer all around the Greek islands and are awesome for overseas visitors offering an insight into Greek culture and customs. This is one of the very few festivals that takes place in the winter in the village of Vothonas. There is a mass in the small and very impressive, rock sculpted church, dedicated to the Holy Mary that can be reached only by foot, followed by food, drink and all night celebrations.

Patras Carnival – The Patras Carnival is one of the loudest, largest and most exciting carnivals, not only of Greece but of Europe in general. The dates may vary due to the shifting of Greek Easter, but the big starting parade always takes place on the 17th of January . If you are a fan of partying and dressing up, there are a ton of events that take place during the month of February in Patras, and more than 30,000 attend the final Closing Ceremony. Don’t miss the Night and Grand Parade that take place the weekend before and make sure to book you accomodation ahead of time to avoid dissappointment. Tsiknopempti – You can celebrate “tsiknomempti” anywhere in Greece, including the city of Patras that puts on a big “Smokey Thursday” day of events that is ideal for meat and BBQ lovers. In essence, the day is spend with family and friends, feasting in preparation for the lent season. If you are dining out, reservations would be very recommended. However, scoring an invite to a friends house ala “My Big Greek Fat Wedding” would be an experience to remember for certain.

Lycabettus Run The Hill Athens – This annual running event is set for another year with more than 4,000 participants and a variety of options for those interested. Runners can choose from a 5.5 or 11 kilometer asphalt run or a 4.5 or 9 kilometer trail run.

Wherever you are in Greece in February, expect at least 9-10 days of rain throughout the month. In general, the island have dark cloudy skies and wind and the temperature has an average high of 13 Celcius. But you also get quite a few days of sun. Late January in Arahova, I had coffee sitting outside under the sun very pleasantly. In Santorini, the first week of February was half rain adn half 20 plus degrees that did not even require a heavy jacket. That is one reason why I recommend extending your holidays to at least a week so you can get at least a few of the good days in there. Of course, preparation is key so come prepared for a fair bit of rain and wind.

We can help plan your Greek holidays! Whether you are visiting in June or October there is so much to discover in the land of eternal beauty.

Climate Comparison (Averages) for Greece's Top Tourism Areas

February's weather often feels mild and pleasant at low elevations because it is sunny almost half the daylight hours. There might be snow in the mountains, however. Most of the country has daytime highs that average about 15°C (59°F), and there is moderate to low rainfall.

Northern Greece: Northern Greece's weather is colder and because the climate is more continental. This means that cold air masses from Europe bring higher winds, storms, snow and more frost. Generally, lowland areas such as Thessaloniki have temperatures between 10°C (50°F) and 2°C (36°F). The higher the elevation, the more the snowfall.

Southern Greece: The climate in the south is generally Mediterranean. The sea makes the temperatures milder. Sightseeing, touring, and hiking activities are not affected by the weather as much as in the north and often feels mild and comfortable, even in the evenings.

Best Places to Visit in Greece in February

February is an especially good time to walk and tour around Greece's extensive ancient ruins, go on extended hikes, and visit the modern urban highlights and museums during low season with less tourists around you. You could also ski. In the evenings, you can relax enjoying Greece's high-quality food in the warm and cozy restaurants.

1. Athens — Tour the Ancient Acropolis Hill

Athens' weather is usually mild and pleasant in February, and it is fairly sunny. There are only about 11 days of rain on average, but the rainfall is quite low and usually falls short and light. While the tourist crowds are gone in the low tourism season, enjoy walking around and seeing the ruins on the large park area on Acropolis Hill.

See the exhibits in the unpretentious and simple Agora Museum at the base of the hill and get a grasp of the long history of the Acropolis and the Agora. The Acropolis itself is imposing and originally dates from 138 BC!

Doing an extensive tour of the large 15-hectare (37-acre) area including Mar's Hill, Dionysus, and the Odeon amphitheater in bright Greek sunshine may leave you in need of refreshment. Conveniently, the road up to the Acropolis has cafés and hotels. The Acropolis and Parthenon close at 3 pm. The Agora Museum closes at 5.

2. Thessaloniki — Walk through History, Nature and Greek Culture in Cool Weather

In February, the weather warms and dries up enough so that sightseeing and hiking in the Thessaloniki valley area before the crowds come is enjoyable. There are only about 7 days of low rainfall in the month. It is sunny, and the sunny weather makes you feel warmer.

Most travelers enjoy sightseeing, walking around and eating. There are many Roman, Ottoman or Byzantine highlights in the city. The temperatures range from 10°C (50°F) to 2°C (36°F). You could go to a beach, but the sea temperature is too cold for swimming

Hikers have more fun outside the city walking nature trails such as the one to Nikiti. The Greek food quality is renowned because they emphasize organic and natural farming, and you will love the healthy and unique light flavors. There is an international airport, and driving from Athens takes about 5 hours.

3. Crete — Sightseeing, Hiking, Luxury Resort Stays

Crete is a beautiful place all year round, and in February, with low crowds and low prices, you might enjoy the sea and the mountains more. There are many natural and cultural hiking trails. Samaria Gorge, unfortunately, is not open until April

The weather is milder than in the rest of Greece, but it rains more often, about 14 days each February. The temperatures range from mild highs of about 16°C (61°F) to chilly lows of 8°C (46°F). There are regular snows on the peaks, and skiing is possible.

You might enjoy museum going, and the Heraklion museum is among the best in Greece. Knossos is a major highlight. Most shops and restaurants are closed during this time. From Athens, you can fly to Crete's two airports in an hour.

4. Santorini — Hiking and Sightseeing with Less Crowds

Santorini is the most popular Greek island, but the crowds do not come in February, so you can enjoy the island while prices are low. There are numerous archeological and historical places to visit, and most are open. The 3,600-year-old town of Akrotiri is a highlight.

There is low rainfall and cool or mild temperatures ranging from 10–15°C (50–59°F). This is good weather for walking around the island, since it is usually sunny, and this makes it feel warmer. It snows at times.

Most of the beach clubs, businesses, restaurants, hotels, and shops are closed. Fira, the capital, has most of the open services. Flights from Athens take 50 minutes, and the ferries take between 5 and 7 hours.

5. Parnassos — Ski and Sightsee in the Region

You might not think of skiing in Greece, but if you want to do that, Parnassos is available about 2½ hours from Athens by vehicle. It is the largest and best equipped ski resort in Greece, and the highest route begins at 2,260 meters (7,415 feet).

There are good slopes for beginners and intermediate skiers. Good accommodations in Parnassos average about 100 USD per night.

Highlights nearby : Delphi is one of the most famous ancient places in Greece, and it is 75 minutes away. For coastal scenery and fine Greek-style seafood, Galaxdi, a fishing village, is less than two hours away.

Tips for Visiting Greece in February

Greece seems so much more tranquil, peaceful, and dreamy in winter. So, February is a good time to relax and enjoy the culture, the excellent Greek food, and contemplate the history of the world and life in general. Bargain prices for hotels and flights might aid that!

The weather is conducive for walking and hiking tours in the historical places without the press and rush of crowds. Many tourists enjoy the calm and comfortable days with more solitude and the pleasure of dining in warm cheery restaurants in the evenings.

Closures : Some popular Greek islands close down during winter. The archaeological sites and most of the museums have shorter hours in February than the summer. Greece in February: Chills and Thrills

Winter view to the Parthenon Temple at the Acropolis of Athens, Greece

  • ~ mins read

Greece in February might not be suitable for the perfect Instagram post. The sky is overcast, the weather chilly with frequent bouts of rain, and snow can be seen as far down south as Peloponnese and Crete. But do not disapprove of the destination just yet! Greece in February is a beacon for budget travelers who are excited by out-of-the-box experiences. Now is the time for a crowd-free cultural exploration of Athens and to indulge in the gastronomic capital of Thessaloniki. While snow seekers can ski down the intimidating slopes of Mount Parnassus, sun-seekers can still find some warmth and relief in the southern islands of Rhodes and Crete. Safe to say, there are plenty of things to do and places to visit when on a trip to Greece regardless of during which month you are visiting.

Greece Weather in February

A female tourist enjoys the view of the snow covered Greece

February falls right in the middle of the winter season in Greece that stretches from November to March. With an average temperature of 12 to 19° C, Athens is still considered warm by the otherwise freezing winter standards of Europe. The month sees the total precipitation of 60 mm spread over seven days with sporadic sunshine at the weather's will. The sea temperature is around 15°C, not great for a strip and dip.

Down south in Crete, winter is milder but pretty wet with an average temperature of 12°C and estimated precipitation of 118mm. The highs sometimes climb up to 16°C, and the sun appears for a total of 14 days during this month. The mercury in other islands like Kos, Rhodes, and Corfu hovers at 13ºC to 15ºC, with monthly rainfall ranging from 115 mm to 149 mm. Santorini is the driest island with an average rainfall of 81 mm and a daily high temperature of 14ºC.

Weather in Greece in February - Rainfall and Temperatures

Why visit greece in february.

Empty chairlifts in a ski resort on a sunny day

Not only does the weather in Greece in February offer plenty of cuddle moments to celebrate the month of love and romance with your partner, but there are also hosts of other benefits that create a pocket-friendly and people-free Greek holiday with a different flavor.

  • Lower prices: If you have craved a stay at those iconic, blue-domed, high-end Oia Resorts in Santorini, February will get you the best deals. It is also the cheapest month to book flight tickets to Greece. And, since the footfall is low, travel businesses drastically reduce rates to vie for your attention.
  • Fewer crowds: February might be off-season, but attractions like ancient sites and museums in the mainland are all open. If you want to dive deeper into the cultural aspects of Greece, you can skip the queue and the sweltering summer heat to cover as many highlights as possible.
  • Ski season: Discover the winter wonderland of Greece on the slopes of its mighty mountains. Whether it is Aráchova or Kalavryta, fans of winter sports will be left smitten by the gorgeous landscapes and world-class skiing facilities that these ski destinations offer.
  • Carnival atmosphere: Before the 40 days of Lent begins, Greeks binge on meat and dance away in a wine-induced frenzy at Apokries or the Greek carnival, a three-week-long celebration with parades, parties, feasts, and masquerades. And carnival customs do get wacky! Join the janissaries (unmarried men) in Naoussa for a masked dance routine or throw dyed flour at each other in Alevromoutzouromata at Galaxidi.

Where to go and what to do

Lagadia is a mountain village and a former municipality in Arcadia, Pelopon

As most islands go on a hibernation mode during winter, February is apt for urban explorations and history hunting in the mainland. Head out to Athens to check out the cradle of democracy. While on a Thessaloniki tour , visit Pella, the birthplace of Alexander the Great. The cold climate is conducive for walking tours and food adventures, so try street treats, culinary classes, and thrift market visits. Do not worry if you miss out on the wild parties of Mykonos. Athens’ nightlife is buzzing in February. To take a break away from the city, go on a ferry ride to Santorini . Even February cannot steal its natural beauty, and its quaint alleys, sans crowds, offer a tonne of privacy. Since the weather is tricky, be sure to check the cloud cover if you covet the island's famous sunset. Back to the mainland, February is a decent time to visit Peloponnese, where you can check out the ancient Messini and Nafplion, Greece's most romantic town.

Greece in February will not offer you your run-of-mill, cookie-cutter Greek holiday. Balance your expectations with the country's limitations, and you will be rewarded with a budget trip that will be packed with unique, seasonal experiences. Granted that Greece’s weather in February is unpredictable, but armed with layers, wind jackets, and rain gear, you will be alright. Our recommendation would be to go for a  7-day stay in Greece  for the ideal trip that would give you a taste of all the country's highlights. If you have a shorter time on your hands, a 5-day trip would work just well. If you need tips on how many days you may need to cover all these activities, check out our guide on  how many days you should spend in Greece . For a stellar trip crafted to your desire, holler, and our local destination experts shall help you with a customized trip to Greece in February.

Best Greek Winter Islands in February

W ho said that Greek Islands were only summer destinations? That’s right, they’re not! We have collected the 5 Best Greeks Winter Islands for you to visit in February. Some are full of life; others are full of romance and others full of culture.

Let’s dive in the crystal-clear waters of the Aegean and Ionian Seas!

Heraklion – Crete

A few general words.

Heraklion , located in the center of Crete , is one of the largest cities in Greece with a population amounting to 250,000 inhabitants. It may feel odd at first as Heraklion is such a lively city, that doesn’t resemble an island at all times. However, your first impression is deceiving when, afterward, you discover the beauties and charm that this unique region of Crete hides. Surrounded by the mountains Psiloritis and Lassithiotika, Heraklion perfectly combines mountain and sea.

Heraklion in Crete - castle

Heraklion in Crete

A few Words on the History

The history of Heraklion began thousands of years ago in the ‘era of mythology’. The prefecture of Heraklion is home to the famous Minoan palace of Knossos , known for the history of Theseus and the Minotaur. The palace of Knossos is one of the most important historical sights of Crete, which is why it receives a large number of visitors every year. Furthermore, the picturesque Venetian port of Heraklion is ideal for endless morning or evening walks and is a perfect place to enjoy the wonderful view around the castle walls. A short distance from the Venetian port is the Historical Museum of Heraklion which was founded in 1952 by the Research Institute of the History of Crete. The museum houses many important exhibits and archaeological finds which depict various forms of Cretan life starting from the beginning of the Christian period.

The Old and New Towns

Heraklion consists of the Old and the New Town. The New Town has been the capital of the prefecture since 1972, an important economic center that contributes significantly to the trade and industry of Crete. The part of the Old Town is located between the old walls forming a triangle whose base overlooks the sea and its top meets the Martinengo bastion at the highest point of which is the tomb of the famous Cretan writer Nikos Kazantzakis . Those who visit Heraklion have the opportunity to wander the streets of the Old Town and visit some of the “hidden jewels” of the area such as the picturesque square of Eleftherios Venizelos full of cafes, restaurants, and tourist shops, and the Morosini Fountain in the center square, known as “the Fountain of the Lions”, which was built in 1628 by the Governor of Crete Francesco Morosini .

Surrounding Area of Heraklion

Apart from the Old and New Towns of Heraklion, in the prefecture, there are many beautiful areas to visit. As you go south of the prefecture of Heraklion you will meet enchanting beaches with crystal clear waters as well as hospitable residents. One of the most interesting sights of the area is the famous Aquarium of Crete which is located between the city of Heraklion and the tourist resort of Hersonissos. It hosts 2500 living marine organisms such as many varieties of fish, sharks, shellfish, jellyfish, and more. The Aquarium is open to the public daily all year round and receives thousands of visitors of all ages.

The prefecture of Heraklion, starting from the coastal cosmopolitan resort of Hersonissos and reaching the archeological sites of Archanes and Pyrgos , is one of the most remarkable destinations in Crete that you should not miss visiting.

The most Famous Beaches of Rhodes

In Rhodes, you will find the beaches you dream of. Due to the size and morphology of the island, it is full of beaches, many of them have a blue flag. Most beaches and most popular are located on the east side of the island. In the west, there are fewer beaches and they are the ones that are calmer as they do not gather a lot of people. Nonetheless, as it is winter, you will have the best beaches to yourself! For the daring few, the waters may not be as cold as you think and you may want to take a dip.

What to see on the ‘Island of the Knights’

The old town of rhodes.

Entering the port by boat, the first thing you see in Mandraki is the fawns welcoming you to the island. The fawns are a symbol of the island and live freely. Legend has it that before the fawns there was the Colossus of Rhodes and ships passed between its legs. Behind them can be seen the walls of the old city. Many cultures have passed through this island and all have left their traces in the old town. You will find fountains, Turkish baths, statues, mosques, and much more. corfu sea

Corfu – Ionian Sea

Let’s “travel” to Corfu , the Venetian Ionian island.

Where is Corfu located?

Corfu is an island located in the Ionian Sea and specifically in the Ionian Group of Islands (Eftanisa). It is located northwest of Lefkada , west of Parga and Igoumenitsa , and south of Albania .

What is worth seeing in Corfu

The old Fortress of the island functions as a place where everyone can visit and admire the historical archive of Corfu, as well as the large Byzantine collection, kept there. The impressive thing that one will see when entering the fortress is how well space is maintained. There is a strong Venetian finesse that does not resemble any other places that function as a “shelter” of cultural heritage in other parts of Greece.

Spianada Square

This square is the largest not only in Corfu but also in the Balkans. A visit is at least necessary. At the “core” of the square is the typical kiosk, where you can enjoy the view that it generously has to offer you.

Liston Square

Liston Square is essentially the main street with its special arches and shops in the city of Corfu. It is a stone’s throw from Spianada Square.

The palace of Princess Sisi is located in the village of Gastouri . The distance is estimated at 10 km from the island’s capital. This is a site where time seems to have stopped. The rich vegetation in combination with the exceptional beauty and architecture of the space is worth your visit.

kumquats in corfu

Pontikonisi

Enjoying your coffee from the cannon, you will see in front of you Pontikonisi popping up. First, you will see a small church and surrounding rocks. This small church is called Panagia Vlacherena. At a negligible distance, you will see an islet with dense vegetation. This is Pontikonisi! You will be able to get there by boat from a resident or by a boat that is for this purpose.

What Flavors to Taste in Corfu

The flavors in the Ionian islands are impressive. Gastronomy really “reaches” another level. In Corfu, you should try the traditional dish ‘pastitsada’ and ‘sofrito’. From sweets, the sweet of the kumquat spoon is suggested. You can also enjoy it as a liqueur. Also, in Corfu, you will have the opportunity to enjoy traditional ‘tsitsimbira’.

santorini caldera view

Santorini’s Caldera

Santorini – Cyclades

Famous for its magnificent caldera, volcano, and romantic sunset, Santorini is considered one of the top places to visit in the world. Built on the edge of steep cliffs, the picturesque villages of Santorini offer wonderful views of the Aegean Sea and the sunken volcano.

Sights Not To Miss

Do not miss visiting Akrotiri , perhaps the most important archeological site of the Cyclades. This city was one of the most important cities in the Aegean Sea until a volcanic eruption destroyed it in the 17th century BC. Volcanic material saved the buildings and their contents.

Nea Kameni Island

The island of Nea Kameni in the middle of the flooded caldera is one of the most dangerous volcanoes on the planet. It is also one of the suggested cities as the lost city of Atlantis . The eruption that destroyed most of Santorini 3,600 years ago created a tsunami that reached as far as Turkey and probably wiped out the Minoan Civilization.

oia in santorini

The star of Santorini, the beautiful village of Oia , is the ultimate island village, full of white houses and vaulted churches that fall above the edge of the caldera. It has enchanting hotels, renovated farmhouses on the edge of the crater and impressive sunsets. Santorini sunset is probably the most famous in the world. The sunset is beautiful from every part of the island, but the sunset in Oia is the best.

Museum of Prehistoric Thira

The Museum of Prehistoric Thira is located in Fira and has findings from prehistoric times that have been excavated from Akrotiri, Ancient Thira, and other areas of Santorini.

cherry tomatoes from Santorini

Cherry Tomatoes of Santorini

For Foodies

In the traditional cuisine of Santorini we can distinguish the following ingredients and dishes:

  • Fava is an old traditional dish that can be served in many different ways, depending on the season.
  • The cherry tomato is very fragrant and tasty.

  • Eggplant, a unique vegetable of the island, is considered the traditional dish in Santorini. They are small aubergines, very tasty, and with a fresh aroma.
  • Capers and dried capers are products of the island that are often used in salads.

Where to Dip

The beaches of Santorini are very different from other beaches in Greece due to their special geographical features. Red and black volcanic pebbles fill the shores of Santorini and the cliffs offer a picturesque atmosphere. Red beach is one of the most beautiful and famous beaches of Santorini. It has black and red volcanic pebbles and hot water. The impressive beach of Perissa has black sand, however, the largest black sand beach of Santorini is Perivolos.

It is the 5th largest island in Greece and combines the modern way of life with the historical tradition and the natural landscape. The island of Chios is famous all over the world for the production of mastic and so we suggest you take a walk through the Mastic villages and try the mastic products. In Kampos of Chios, you will see endless orchards with citrus and some of the most beautiful traditional houses on the island.

They are about 20, you will find them in southern Chios and they smell delicious like mastic. Pyrgi and Mesta stand out, followed by Vessa, Armolia, Nenita, and Patrika.

A castle city in the North Aegean

An image that will surely be unforgettable: a stone cone of cuboid houses with black spots from open doors and windows. This is Anavatos. An uninhabited stone tower, erected above the wilderness of the forest, hanging next to the abyssal cliff. A monument of special importance for the history of Chios, but also of humanity, and one of the sights that you should not miss.

mount olympus

Look, a trip to Greece during February has the potential to be something magical. Well, at least that is the case if you’re looking for a specific type of getaway adventure destination. What do we mean by this?

If you’re planning a trip to Greece in February, the weather and Mediterranean climate will do all the talking.

Far gone are the days of fun under the beating Greecian sun. Most days and the average weather during February will showcase quite the opposite. An overcast sky, chilly daily temperatures in Greece in February, and a spell of rain or snow are what await you.

During this off-season , you might not always come upon bad weather. You will get your fair share of winter sun and a whole world of natural beauty and ancient history in cold weather.

But don’t let that frighten you into grabbing your Greece travel guide and rescheduling your trip. So without further ado, let’s get to the good stuff – what you can expect from time spent in Greece in February weather.

What to Expect from Greece's Weather in February

Acropolis

February falls smack dab in the country's winter season, stretching from November to March. Middle of winter. Sounds like a line from a Game of Thrones foreshadowing moment.

However, we wouldn’t get our swords out just yet, as February with Greecian weather holds more than chilly temperatures . According to weather data, you’ll have ample, with days ranging from an average temperature of 53ºF to a maximum temperature of 66ºF.

Add to that the looming threat of 60mm of rainfall that spreads itself across the entirety of the month. If it’s your first time experiencing Greece, its February weather conditions and oddly structured rain patterns don’t break a sweat. Monthly rainfall occurs during a seven-day period which few can predict accurately every year.

It’s worth mentioning that February Greece differs depending on where you find yourself. In the country's southern regions, you can expect an average daily temperature that stagnates an average maximum temperature at around 53ºF.

What about the Greek islands? This is a question that pops up more often than you’d expect because the Greek islands in February wear a different weather jacket every day.

skiing in greece

Some islands, such as Kos and Rhodes , see days warmed up to a maximum temperature of 55ºF. While the southern Greek islands , like Santorini , take the crown for the driest island spot, with only about 48mm of rainfall and average highs of 55ºF.

Fewer crowds : Greece is a popular tourist destination during the summer months, but in February, you'll have a better chance of experiencing fewer crowds and more space to explore.

Winter sports : If you enjoy winter sports like skiing or snowboarding, then February is a good time to visit Greece, as there are several ski resorts in the mountains of northern Greece.

Cold weather : Greece can be quite cold in February, with temperatures ranging between 6-14°C (43-57°F) on average. It can also snow in some areas, particularly in the mountains.

Limited activities : Some attractions and tours may be closed during the low season, so you may have fewer options for things to do.

Limited island access : Some islands may not have regular ferry service during the low season, so it's important to check the schedules before planning your trip.

Overall, if you don't mind the cooler temperatures and want to avoid the crowds and high prices of the summer season, then February can be a good time to visit Greece.

Just be sure to pack warm clothing and check the schedules and availability of activities and transportation beforehand.

Are any Greek islands warm in February?

While February is generally considered a cold and rainy month in Greece, there are some islands that are relatively warmer compared to other parts of the country. Here are a few examples:

Crete :  Crete  is the largest island in Greece and is located in the southern part of the country. In February, temperatures can range between 10-18°C (50-64°F) on average, making it one of the warmest islands in Greece during that time.

Rhodes : Rhodes is located in the southeastern Aegean Sea and has a milder winter climate than many other Greek islands. In February, temperatures can range between 12-17°C (54-63°F) on average.

Santorini : Santorini is a popular tourist destination known for its stunning views and picturesque towns.

While it can still be quite cold in February, temperatures can range between 10-16°C (50-61°F) on average, making it one of the warmer islands in the Cyclades.

It's important to note that even on these relatively warmer islands, February is still considered the low season and can be cold and rainy at times.

However, if you're looking for a milder winter climate compared to other parts of Greece, these islands may be a good option to consider.

What is the best month to visit Greece?

Overall,  the best time to visit Greece depends on your interests and preferences . If you want to enjoy the beaches and water sports, then summer is the best time.

If you want to avoid the crowds and enjoy  outdoor activities , then spring and fall are great options.

And if you don't mind the cold and want to enjoy winter sports, then winter can be a good time to visit.

Does it Rain in Greece in February?

Along with being one of the coolest months in Greece, February is also one of the rainiest months. Generally speaking you will see anywhere between 8-12 days of rain in Greece at this time of year.

Does it Snow in Greece in February?

Snow is not commonly seen in Greece at any time of year. However in February you may get some snow on the higher ground where the ski resorts are.

However for most visitors in Greece this should not be a concern.

Note : we always recommend checking the forecast at your destination(s) 7 days out from travel to make sure there are no expected weather fronts i.e. heatwaves or cold snaps.

But if you do plan on going skiing check out our ski capsule wardrobe.

How do local people dress in Greece in February?

Locals in Greece know that it is cold in Winter and will be rocking plenty of boots and winter coats .

We recommend following suit and packing a Winter capsule wardrobe for Greece in February.

What to Wear to Greece in February

So now you know what to expect of the weather in Greece in February we will turn our attention to what to wear. The guide is split out into men, women’s and shoes section to make for easier navigation.

However before we get into the details of what to pack for Greece in February we want to stress the importance of packing a capsule wardrobe.

Capsule wardrobes are a great way of preventing overpacking and this is especially important for Greece. Traveling around Greece and island hopping, even in Winter is a great way to explore the country, but is difficult to do with lots of luggage whcih is why a capsule wardrobe is important.

To find out more on how to pack a capsule wardrobe check out these posts:

What to wear in Greece in February for Women

People at the Acropolis in February

Overall the items we recommend including in your Greece Capsule wardrobe include:

Jacket / Coat

In Winter you will definitely need a coat / jacket. I like to have something like a puffer jacket. Though obviously if you are going into the mountains to higher ground a thicker coat will be required.

Click here to shop coats for Greece.

Wool Hat or Beanie, scarves and glove

It really depends on the part of Greece you are traveling to as to whether you need winter accessories like a hat scarf and gloves. For instance in the North and in the mountains, you will absolutely need these Winter accesories.

However further south it will depend on your tolerance for cold as to weather they will be needed.

Click here to shop winter accessories for Greece.

For me jeans are perfect pants for Greece in February no matter where you are traveling to. Also you will see all types of jeans in Greece so you don’t need to worry about the type of jeans you pack. Just be comfortable.

For the North however and in the mountains fleece lined jeans may be a good idea.

HoweverI would suggest that jeans are not the only type of trouser you should take for this time of year. We also recommend packing some smarter trousers like chinos, cords or wool trousers. We love a black pant for anywhere in Greece in Winter (we love the  Athleta Brooklyn ankle pant for travel ).

Layers are absolutely essential for February in Greece. Light layers are better than chunky knits and sweaters as they are easier to layer.

Merino wool is one of my favorite fabrics as this is a relatively thin material to pack, however is insulating and repels smell packing it perfect for capsule wardrobes.

T shirts are a great base layer for Greece in Winter. We recommend packing more long than short sleeve tees though especially in the North.

Click here to shop t shirts.

Blouses are a great pick for Greece in February especially for dinners when paired with cardigans or sweaters.

Winter Dress or Skirt

Short skirts and dresses are not appropriate in churches in Greece and not really in keeping with local style. But dresses are still good for Greece in Winter especially at night. Given the temperatures we recommend wearing sweater dresses which can be paired with thick tights and boots.

Click here to shop Winter dresses

It doesn’t matter where I am traveling in Europe, a pashmina is always on my packing list. A pashmina can be used as a scarf or lovely accessory to transition an outfit from day to night and is also useful for churches in Greece.

I would pack thicker weight flannel PJs for January.

Underwear and Socks

Goes without saying. I like to pack  merino wool socks  for Winter travel. They are thinner than hiking socks but are insulating so are good for cold weather.

What to Pack for Greece in February for Men

Couple sat in Winter clothes overlooking athens skyline

So now you know what to pack for women in Greece in February, we will turn our attention to men’s packing essentials . We recommend packing the following:

Jeans / Chinos

Jeans are a great pick for February, but we recommend also packing a different style of pant too such as chinos, dockers or even cords.

T Shirts and Shirts

T Shirts are great for Greece in Winter, For the North long sleeve t shirts are most appropriate, but in the South a mix of long and short sleeve tops are a good idea.

One button down shirt is also worth putting on your packing list for some more upscale restaurants.

Click here to shop t shirts for Greece.

Coat and Winter Accessories

A coat is an essential for Greece in February. For the North you will need a thicker coat and winter accesories, while in the South you may just need a coat.

Layers

If you are spending a week in Greece in Winter I would recommend packing 3 types of layers as well as a coat as per our sudoku packing method.

We recommend packing a hoodie for daytimes exploring archaeological sites like the Acropolis and for museums, a sweater for evenings and a fleece or cardigan too.

Best Shoes for Greece in February

There are two types of shoes that we recommend packing for February and they are:

Sneakers are great for touring archaeological sites in Greece even in Winter. They have a good sole to provide grip on slippery surfaces and provide good arch and ankle support for uneven surfaces.

My favorite brand of sneakers for walking are are  Hoka  and    AllBirds  as these are great for walking in.

However you also can’t go wrong with a plain white sneaker as they go with everything fashion wise. One of my favorite pairs of white sneakers is the  Adidas Cloud Foam shoes.

Click here to shop sneakers for Greece.

Ankle Boots

As well as sneakers, boots are an essential for Greece at this time of year. WE recommend picking something that has a low or no heel and a good sole for walking in all conditions and over over all surfaces.

They are also better for smarter restaurants than sneakers.

We tend to pick ankle boots not knee high boots, not for a fashion reason but just because they are easier to pack than longer length boots .

Click here to shop ankle boots.

What to Pack for Greece in February (Non Clothing)

Santorini in February

So now you know what to wear for Greece in February, we will turn our attention to what to pack for Greece in February other than clothes.

We consider all of the below to be essentials for Greece at this time of year:

  • Universal Travel Adapaters  for electronics – Greece uses standard European outputs and plugs.
  • Backpack – for storing items on your day trips.
  • Crossbody Bag  – anti theft type if you are planning to visit cities and tourist attractions which tend to attract pickpockets wherever you are in the world.
  • Compact Umbrella  – As I mentioned it is pretty rainy in Greece in Winter so an umbrella will be required.
  • Lipbalm – I never travel to a cold weather destination without lip balm to protect my lips from drying out in the cold.
  • Reusable Water Bottle –  this is better for the environment and will save you money.
  • Charging Equipment
  • Power pack / Battery Pack
  • Medication and Documentation
  • Toiletries – for our essential travel toiletries checklist click here.

FAQs About what to wear in Greece in February

Do you need a jacket in greece in february.

A coat or jacket is still an essential for Greece in February.

Do I need swimwear in Greece in February?

Most people when they think about visiting Greece think about beautiful beaches and swimming in warm seas. However in February for most people the sea will be too cold to swim in.

For this reason we don’t think swimwear is an essential for most people at this time of year.

However if you do want to swim in February you may want to consider packing a wetsuit to help cope with the cold water.

Greece in February: Affordable Digital Nomad Winter Destination

greece in february

Last Updated on 22 November 2023 by Brittany

Winter is the perfect time for digital nomads to explore a new part of the world. That’s why many remote workers stay in Greece in February .

With mild weather, affordable accommodations, and a ton of things to do , Greece isn’t just for your summer beach trips or cruises. This gorgeous Mediterranean country offers digital nomads an active and comfortable lifestyle even in the winter.

So many remote workers fall in love with the Greek lifestyle that they end up living there for a year or two with the Greece digital nomad visa !

Before you get excited and find the first flight to Greece from wherever you are in the world, let’s dive into what exactly life is like in Greece in February for digital nomads.

greece in february

Is February a Good Time to Visit Greece as a Digital Nomad?

In my humble opinion, Greece in February is the perfect place for digital nomads who want to stay in Europe but avoid extremely cold winters.

From firsthand experience, I spent two months in Greece, from January to March, and it was incredible! While I wasn’t keen on jumping into the sea, even on the sunniest days, there were locals taking a swim every morning.

Greece in February offers digital nomads a unique perspective and opportunity to experience the authentic Greek lifestyle. The number of tourists compared to the summer is very low. It won’t feel too crowded or overwhelming.

greece travel in february

Depending on where you stay in Greece, the weather is fairly mild. Being in the southern Mediterranean, you can expect to don a winter coat and a light scarf while out exploring the country.

While Greece in February is fairly quiet, there are still plenty of things to do and see. Plus, it gives digital nomads the opportunity to find a cozy cafe to work from undistracted.

greece in february

How Cold is Greece in February?

You can expect temperatures ranging from 6℃ (44℉) to 16℃ (61℉) during the day , depending on where you choose to stay in Greece in February.

However, you can definitely count on getting plenty of sunlight in Greece in February. Just in Athens, you’ll experience 136 hours of sunlight during the month. Bright, sunny days are crucial for digital nomads who want to be as productive as possible.

greece in february

What is Greece Like in February?

Well, we’ve already determined that Greece in February is a digital nomad’s winter paradise if they aren’t looking for somewhere hot and tropical, that is.

Digital nomads who appreciate the European lifestyle, history, and mild winter temperatures will find that Greece is the perfect winter destination.

Fewer Tourists

Just the city of Athens attracts 6.5 million tourists every year. Most of them come during July and August.

When traveling to Greece in February, you will notice a lack of tourists. Museums won’t be crowded. Lines to the Acropolis are nonexistent. Beaches are nearly empty!

For digital nomads who want to experience historic and iconic sites but want to avoid being in crowds , traveling in the off-season is the best option.

Just before the pandemic, we spent a month on the small Greek island of Tinos and were the only tourists in the village! It was such a fun and intimate way to discover the lifestyle there.

Affordable Accommodations

During the winter, accommodations in Greece are half the price they charge during the summer. In the center of Athens, we rented an apartment for just €1,000 for the month.

Since there are fewer tourists, which means less demand, hotels , hostels , and Airbnbs reduce their rates.

Discounted Attractions

From November to March, many archaeological sites offer reduced admissions. That means, instead of paying €20 to climb to the top of the Acropolis, you only have to pay €10!

Plus, many cities offer free admission on the first Sunday of every month during the off-season.

Digital nomads who are budget-conscious and like to take advantage of affordable locations will get to experience Greece for half the price when they go in February.

Seasonal Businesses Closed

One of the downfalls of visiting Greece in February is that many seasonal towns and businesses will shutter their doors during the winter months. With fewer tourists, it doesn’t make sense for a beach club or cafe to stay open.

In reality, this could cause a bit of a struggle when trying to find an open restaurant, but it’s all part of the adventure! Who knows, you may stumble on one of the best meals ever, trying to find an open local restaurant.

Where to Visit Greece in February

Crete is the largest island in Greece and is self-sustaining. Known for consuming the most olive oil per year per person, Crete has some of the best food, best beaches, and friendliest people you will ever meet during your travels in Greece.

With three major cities, Heraklion, Chania, and Rethymno, all three are excellent hubs for digital nomads. If you’re looking for a smaller community but still have a ton of things to do, then Crete is the destination for you!

From discovering small beach towns to hiking trails to skiing in the mountains , Crete is the perfect place to visit in Greece in February as a digital nomad.

Pro tip: You’re definitely going to want to rent a car some days to explore everything this island has to offer easily.

We stayed in Heraklion and absolutely loved the vibe there. Friendly, interesting, and close to archaeological sites, we would definitely stay there again. Plus, I found some of the coziest cafes in Heraklion for digital nomads .

Thessaloniki

Located in the northern part of Greece, Thessaloniki is a port city with just as much history as Athens. With a gorgeous promenade along the sea , you can soak in your Vitamin D even in February when you stay in this lively Greek city in February.

While the temperatures may be colder than in Athens, you can still count on sunny days and enjoyable walks around the city. With streets lined with cafes, boutique stores, tavernas, and coworking spaces , it’s a digital nomad’s winter paradise.

Plus, with the city being on the less-visited list, you may find a more authentic experience staying here than in Athens.

greece in february

Are you looking for a small getaway or escape from the hustle and bustle of cities? Are you ready to buckle down and focus on your remote work?

Then, the small island of Tinos is the perfect destination in Greece in February for you!

Located just a 20-minute ferry ride north of Mykonos, Tinos town has all of the qualities you dream of in a Greek island. With white buildings, blue accent doors and windows, and plenty of friendly cats wandering the streets, it’s a place to rejuvenate and relax.

While there isn’t much to do on the island except rotate through the cafes, eat a gyro, and sit on the beaches, sometimes it’s nice to live a slow, quiet life.

greece in february

A bit of a larger island than Tinos, Paros offers an authentic experience to digital nomads who wish to live on a Greek island in February. There is definitely more to do in the sizable towns, including museums and more restaurant and cafe options.

This Cycladic island offers a handful of towns that digital nomads may find interest in. Plus, it’s fairly easy to travel between the towns via bus routes. Or you can always rent a car and discover the island on your own.

While there aren’t official coworking spaces on the island, there are plenty of cafes with free wifi and outlets where you can set up your digital nomad laptop and get some work done.

What to Wear in Greece in February

Let’s be honest: you won’t be wearing the traditional beach outfit you see people post on social media when they go on vacation in Greece if you choose to go in February.

Instead, you can expect to wear jeans, sweaters, and a light winter coat during your stay in Greece in February.

However, it can also depend on the weather. The sun is still fairly warm during this time of year! For those sunny days, you may not need a winter coat, but a light jacket instead.

If you choose to stay on the islands, you can expect it to become pretty windy. For this, we recommend a hat and scarf.

In other words, you can expect to wear traditional fall and winter clothing while in Greece in February , but you won’t have the chill bite or overcast gray of a northern winter.

How to Live in Greece for One Year as a Digital Nomad

When digital nomads visit Greece, it’s hard to leave. Many of them like to explore the option of fully relocating there to live.

It’s never been easier now that Greece’s digital nomad visa is available!

If you meet the below requirements , you could be eligible to live in Greece for one year or more.

  • Earn at least €3,500 per month working remotely
  • Have a clean criminal record

  • Sign a lease agreement in Greece

You can also bring your spouse and children with you if you travel as a digital nomad family .

Visiting Greece in Winter

Are the months of January and February a good time of year to visit Greece? It's a question quite a few readers have asked, and so I thought to put all the information here in one place.

Before we start though, I should make clear that visiting Greece in January and February has its pros and cons.

On the positive side, you'll have bargain prices for hotels , there'll be very few tourists, and you could try out a ski resort in the mountains. You'll also find the ancient sites a lot less busy than they are during peak season!

On the negative side, there will be occasional rainy days, some Greek islands will be virtually closed for winter, and you won't really be lazing around on the beach.

If you're visiting from Northern Europe or Northern America, you might find the weather pleasantly mild compared to your own winters. If you're visiting Greece from Asia , you might find January a bit too chilly to be comfortable.

January and February in Greece

If you're planning to visit Greece during January or February, these frequently asked questions and answers might be of use. Let's start off with an obvious one, and build up from there!

Visit Greece in January – Weather Overview

In January, Greece has average temperature of 10°C, with highs of 13°C and an average low temperature of 7°C. You'll need some cold weather clothing, and as there are some rainy days, perhaps a packable umbrella.

What season is Greece in January?

As with all of Europe, January in Greece is firmly in the winter season. Although both January and February are the coldest months of the year in Greece, winters are mild compared to the rest of Europe due to its southern location.

Are the Greek islands warm in January?

January is normally the coldest month of the year in the Greek Islands. Gray skies and rain can be frequent in winter, and the sea temperatures are too cold for most people to enjoy swimming.

What is the weather in Greece in January?

It looks like January is off-season so will I be ok to book tours when I get there or should I do it now?

The Temple of Apollo in Delphi, Greece

Answer: You could almost definitely book tours a day or two before you want to go, as tour operators will have room. From a practical point of view though, my travel tip is to book in advance.

This is from experience! I'm currently traveling around Asia, and we've spent a surprising amount of time researching and booking tours on the fly.

If we had booked in advance, we'd have more time enjoying the sights and sounds, and less time in front of a computer screen!

Do archaeological sites in Greece have shorter opening hours in winter?

Best time to visit Athens

Answer: Archaeological sites in Greece have shorter opening hours in January than in summer. The major ones mostly close at 15.00 because there is less daylight, so get your sightseeing in early. Minor ones may not open at all. If you are visiting Athens, the Acropolis and Parthenon closes at 17.00, but the Acropolis Museum does open until 20.00, (depending on the day) so you can plan your day around that.

Should I go to Mykonos in January or February?

Answer: This is a difficult one to answer! It really depends what it is you want to get out of Mykonos . You certainly won't be swimming or sunbathing at that time of year!

There won't be much in the way of tourist infrastructure open, but on the other hand, you will get a true taste of Greek island life in off-season. Generally speaking Mykonos and other Greek islands of the Cyclades are not a winter destination.

Dave Briggs visiting an island in Greece

9 thoughts on “Visiting Greece in January and February: Travel Tips and Advice”

Hi Dave, we have spent many wonderful summer holidays in Greece and are now hoping to visit out of season. How wonderful are Greek easters and where would you recommend.?

You’re doing a wonderful job Dave, thank you

Planning a solo trip to Greece the last two weeks in Feb 2020. I can’t decide on the itinerary tho, from my search it looks like Mykonos will be very quiet. I’m looking for islands that will still have a bit of life, restaurants/cafe options and beautiful views. Ive been going back and forth between Santorini, Crete, Naxos and Paros…I don’t mind doing a couple….any suggestions? I also plan on going to Athens for a couple days. Thank you!!

Hi Rosie, In February there won’t be much to do on the smaller islands, as the tourists season doesn’t really kick in until after Greek Easter. I’d give Mykonos a miss completely. There’s plenty to see and do on Crete all year through, February might be a good time for Santorini as there’s fewer tourists. Naxos would also be a nice one. I’m not sure about Paros to be honest – if you do end up there, let me know what it was like! For ferryhopping take a look at ferries here – Ferryhopper

Hi Dave I along with family is in Athens from 31 Jan to 2nd feb, Santorini from 3rd Feb to 5th. I have 4 more days with me as I am in Athens from 5th to 9th. Pl suggest an itinerary to see some other places. I can go by car also for some long drives. Thanks. Ajay

Hi Ajay, If you’re hiring a car, you can take a mini road tip to include Delphi, Meteora and possibly Thessaloniki. Take a look here for road trip ideas in Greece .

My apologies if you’re holidaying.

We’re a family of 4 stopping in Athens before reaching the UK. We have approximately 5 days. Reaching Athens midnight 24/1 to 28/1 midday.

Thinking of visiting either Santorini or Mykonos.

1. In your opinion, best bet would be? Santorini, Mykonos or any other island? 2. Day trips recommended for islands? 3. We do not mind flying to save time.

Hi Teresa, In my opinion it would be a waste to go to Mykonos, so you could safely strike that from the list. Santorini would give you the option to fly, it won’t be too busy either at that time of year. If you stay overnight, consider staying in Fira. Keep in mind the January weather can be unpredictable! The other option is to stay in Athens , and take an island trip to Hydra and other islands. I and my Husband are travelling to Greece for our honeymoon in Jan 2020. Our itinerary is as such :

22nd – 23rd Jan – Athens 24th – 28th Jan – Santorini 29th – 2nd Feb – Sight seeing in Athens, do a day trip to Hydra – Poros – Aegina cruise and 2 day trip to Delphi & Meteora.

We want to enjoy nightlife in Santorini & Athens? Do you have any suggestions?

Also would you recommend 2 day trip to Syros instead of trip to Delphi & Meteora.

Also wanted to know about public transportation on islands (Santorini/Syros). We don’t want to rent a car.

Hi, I think your itinerary looks good. I would recommend Delphi and Meteora over Syros because of the time of year you are visiting. Syros would be better in summer months I feel. On Santorini, you can get around by bus although there may be more restrictive services in Jan/Feb. Taxis are available, but at a price of course. However, if you are staying in either Oia or Fira in any case, you can see a lot on foot. Greece Travel Tips: The Ultimate Guide For First-Timers

Greek Island Bucket List is an Amazon Associate and participant in other affiliate programmes. I earn from qualifying purchases. Please see my disclaimer for more information.

If you’re travelling to Greece for the first time you probably have all sorts of questions. Whether it’s how to travel within Greece or more to do with day-to-day etiquette and practicalities. I’ll answer some of the most common questions here and give you some essential Greece travel tips.

Note that this Greece travel guide for first-timers is HEFTY so pin it to refer back to.

greece travel in february

When is the Best Time to Visit Greece?

If you’re going to the islands, the season runs from around April until November however it does vary a bit from place to place.

Best Time for Everything to Be in Full Swing

Mykonos, for example, has a shorter season and things are really packing up by mid-September. The season in Santorini runs for longer and activities are still being offered well into November.

In most other places I’d expect to see a distinct difference in what’s open after the 15th October.

The best time for everything to be open and the sea to be pleasant is from June to late September. Before and after that the weather can be changeable and fewer places are open so plan accordingly.

Although the sea in April and May can be cold, it holds its temperature through October and November.

Read about Paros and Santorini in October

greece travel in february

Best Time for Hiking

If you’re interested in hiking the islands, the best months are April , May, the beginning of June and then September, October and the beginning of November.

Late spring and early summer are lovely times to go because you can generally expect good weather, blossoming bougainvillaea, warm seas and services that are up and running.

At the same time, you’ll avoid the blistering heat of July and August and the biggest onslaught on visitors.

greece travel in february

What to expect in High Season

July and August are the peak months when you can expect summer crowds. In the first three weeks of August, Greek people flee the summer heat of Athens and head for the islands too.

The main tourist areas can be overwhelmingly busy so consider some of the smaller islands. July and August will be much busier than normal for them too. But it’s also when you’ll find sea taxis running to take you to some of the most beautiful places

Many Greek beaches are only accessible by boat, so you’ll have a hard time getting to them outside of July and August.

How Do I Decide Where to Go?

Since there are a number of different island groups it can be hard to decide which is the best option, especially for your first trip.

What Are You Looking for?

My advice is to start with what are the most important things to you. For example, are you looking for amazing beaches?

Perhaps you want somewhere with good hiking trails, masses of history, a great nightlife, particularly delicious food or that’s perfect for families.

Maybe you’re looking for the perfect place to hide away and relax, far from other tourists. Once you know what you’re looking for from your trip you can start to narrow down the best places for those things.

Then you can look at how to travel between those places or find alternatives that are closer to each other.

greece travel in february

How Long Do You Have?

Another big consideration is how much time you’ve got. If you’re really limited and are spending time in Athens then hopping about the Saronic Islands might make the most sense.

Alternatively, if you’re besotted with social media pictures and videos from the Ionian Islands then just go ahead and book there and cross it off your bucket list!

What Temperatures Do You Want?

Be aware that like other European countries, Greece in the summer season gets HOT. The Peloponnese is renowned for its scorching temperatures. One of the reasons some of the islands are so popular is because of the winds that help keep the temperatures down.

Less is More

My biggest piece of advice though is not to try and cram too much in. Less is more when it comes to deciding on how much of the mainland to explore or how many islands to visit.

Ferry travel can take up a lot of time. And although it’s a quintessential part of Greek travel, you don’t want to be spending more time on a ship than at your destinations.

Although you might be keen to see as much as possible, make time to just absorb the Greek culture, sample local food and watch the world go by. You can always add places to your list to visit next time.

greece travel in february

Should I Avoid the Main Tourist Destinations?

People will tell you that Santorini and Mykonos are overrated, touristy and not the real Greece. I can’t deny they are touristy and that there are many other islands to discover (not to mention mainland Greece).

Greece is a beautiful country and there are many popular destinations to choose from as well as off-the-beaten-track options.

But I can’t say that Santorini is overrated. It’s about the most popular tourist destination in Greece for a reason. The view of the caldera is truly spectacular and it’s something I think is worth seeing once.

greece travel in february

Similarly, Mykonos is a rather unique and diverse place. I used to think it was a really tacky destination for package holidays from the UK.

But having been, there’s something about seeing all the wealth and the way other people live that always makes me want to up my game.

I think it’s fun, glamorous and inclusive and it does have beautiful beaches. The Unesco World Heritage Site of Delos next door is really special too.

I think it’s nice to go to Mykonos for a short time but include some other islands in the mix. Tinos right next door is a great place to combine with.

Should I Fly to the Greek Islands or Take the Ferry?

The most common way of getting to the islands is via ferry. I recommend it although I know it’s not the easiest way for everyone. If you have children then flying might be easier than the sensory overload and organised chaos that comes with getting the ferry in high season.

greece travel in february

For more information about flying see the Best Greek Airlines For Island Hopping .

Things to keep in mind about flying:

  • some of the large islands do have national or international airports but lots of islands don’t
  • if you’re going to smaller islands like the Small Cyclades you could fly to Naxos and then get the boat from there
  • Athens is a hub and most island flights radiate out on “spokes” so you’ll have to fly in and out of Athens to get from island to island
  • there can be a few exceptions in peak times like flights directly between Santorini and Corfu
  • leave enough time between arriving on an international flight and your departure time for the islands (about 3 hours)

If you decide to fly then I recommend Skyscanner to book your plane ticket. They show you all the flights to a particular location on the date you specify, or across the whole month.

If you’re booking connecting flights then they also offer you options to buy tickets through travel agents.

That can be helpful if you’re booking connecting flights as you’ll have more support if you’re delayed on the first leg and miss your connection. Note that Delta has partnered with SKY Express to offer tickets all the way through to your final destination.

What is the best website for Greek island hopping?

If you’re heading to the Greek islands then get on FerryHopper.com , I love it. It’s the easiest site I’ve found to search for dates and several “hops” at once.

Plus they send you an email with all your booking details filled out so it’s super easy to check in online with just a single click.

Once you check in they’ll send you e-tickets so you don’t have to go and collect paper copies. (There are a few exceptions to this but you can see when booking if e-tickets aren’t available.)

When Should I Book my Ferry Tickets?

If the ferry schedules are out, then the best time to book your tickets is probably as soon as you’ve booked your hotel. If the schedules for the month of your visit aren’t yet published then just keep checking back.

See: Greek Ferries Guide for People Who Don’t Know Where to Start

People will tell you it’s fine to get your tickets on the day of travel. And while I am a last-minute person I wouldn’t advise leaving this too late.

One, if you do need to collect paper tickets it’s better not to be rushing about trying to get them. And two, tickets do sell out. It doesn’t happen all the time, but in the summer season, I have seen sold-out trips.

Plus there are finite numbers of economy seats, cabins and pet cabins, so if you want any of those you need to book when they’re available.

What do I need to hire a car in Greece?

I’ve answered all your Greece car hire questions here and tell you everything you need to know about driving in Greece here. Depending on where you’re coming from you probably won’t need an International Drivers Permit now but do check.

For many islands, it can be good to hire a car to really explore. But it depends on how long you’re staying and how comfortable you are about driving in Greece whether it’s worth it.

People can find driving on the islands a unique experience and sometimes one that’s more stressful than it’s worth.

Think twice (or three times) before hiring an ATV /quad bike. They’re really not safe and there are tons of accidents each year (many fatal).

See Do I Need a Car in Naxos?

Using buses on the islands

Bus facilities on the islands vary greatly. Places like Paros and Syros have good frequent buses around their islands. Mykonos has good transport to the various popular beaches there.

Where I stayed in Tinos there were only buses on Mondays. But the more popular parts for tourists had pretty regular routes. I’ve included bus information as part of many of the island guides.

During July and August, there are usually a lot more buses serving popular routes. Outwith these months buses can be cut right down or entire routes stopped altogether. If there are a few of you travelling together it can often work out cheaper to get a taxi.

Often there’s a small bus stop/shelter on one side of the road where you can wait for the bus. If you need to travel in the other direction just wait opposite it if there’s no obvious sign of a stop on the other side.

Luggage on Buses

In Greece, you put your luggage or any big or bulky items in the storage areas under the bus. If there are handles on the doors just open them up and put your suitcase in yourself. If there are no handles then the driver will open them up from the dashboard.

Keep valuables with you but I’ve always felt comfortable leaving the rest of my stuff under the bus. It was the same in Spain when I lived there.

Don’t try and take your stuff onto the bus with you. You can’t take up a seat for your bags and there’s not much space to put them anywhere else.

Paying your fare

On some buses, you pay the driver directly. On others, you take a seat and a conductor comes round and takes your money. I’ve seen both options on the same route too, sometimes. It’s usually ok to pay with notes if you don’t have change.

All About the Money

How can i exchange dollars or access euros in greece, euro only in greece.

Just to clarify, Greece uses the Euro. I’ve seen a surprising number of people ask if it’s possible to pay in US dollars when you get here. The answer is no.

However, if you’ve been travelling in Turkey, I can understand why you might think you can use alternative currency.

Exchanging money at the airports

You can exchange money at Athens airport. If you fly directly to an island then this is also possible in some places like Rhodes, Crete and Mykonos.

However, it’s always likely to be more expensive than if you were to exchange money with your bank at home before travelling.

Withdrawing foreign currency from the cashpoint/ATM

As I fly by the seat of my pants a bit, I tend to withdraw money from the cashpoint when I arrive. You get charged a fee each time but I don’t think it’s more than what you would pay to an exchange place.

Because of the fee, make sure that during your stay you pull money out in chunks rather than frequent, small withdrawals. The ATM will usually ask if you want the conversion to be in Euros or your home currency converted.

My bank won’t let me do this, but if you can choose the Euros option for calculating the amount.

(Side note: same when you’re paying by card. Sometimes the card terminal will ask if you want to be charged in Euros or your home currency like Dollars or Sterling. Choose the Euro option as it’s pretty much guaranteed to be cheaper for you.)

Have Cash When You Arrive

It’s probably sensible to have at least a bit of cash on you when you arrive in Greece. Many taxis won’t take cards. So at least if you have some physical money on you, you can get to your hotel. (Assuming you haven’t already organised some kind of transfer.)

The airports have ATMs but from time to time these things don’t work and the smaller airports won’t have a lot of options.

Having said that, I’ve asked taxi drivers to stop at ATMs on the way to where we’re going plenty of times (because I’m highly disorganised at times). Although, perhaps it’s not ideal for a female traveller, especially if you’re travelling at night in an unfamiliar area.

Avoid Euronet ATMs

Look for a normal bank ATM rather than these yellow and blue convenience ATMs. They’re installed in smaller, touristy areas, often next to tourist supermarkets. Usually, they’re seasonal too and only operate from April to October.

The exchange rates aren’t good and they charge a much bigger one-off fee to use them. They’re ok if you’re stuck – hence paying more for convenience – but I’d advise against using them regularly.

greece travel in february

Paying by card in Greece

I use my contactless bank card for most things in Greece. However, I heard that a lot of US credit cards don’t have this facility. You can still use chip and pin or you may be asked to sign the receipt.

A lot of taxi drivers won’t accept cards and some smaller shops and restaurants may not either. Of those that do, American Express and Diners Club are probably less widely accepted than others.

As I mentioned above, if you get the option on the PDQ machine, it’s usually the most cost-effective to pay in local currency. I.e. choose the option to pay in euros rather than in dollars or pounds or whatever you’re home currency is.

How Does Tipping Work?

Tipping is different to what you’re used to if you’re from the USA. It’s normally just to round up your bill after a meal and just leave the change. Otherwise leaving 1 or 2 euros in the dish when you leave the table is normal.

For tour guides and private drivers, you can leave more but all of it is up to you and the type of service you received. People won’t be expecting the type of tips you might leave in the US but they will appreciate anything you do give them.

What to Pack and Wear

My first piece of advice here is to pack light. If you’re going in the winter months that’s a bit easier said than done. And if you’re hiring a car and exploring only on the mainland then it’s less of a worry how much you take. You can chuck everything in the car and off you go.

But if you’re going to the islands in the summer months then I’d really aim to only take hand luggage. It’s the best way to do things since you’ll encounter lots of steps, uneven pavements, dirt roads and the like.

Having said that, if you’re arranging transfers everywhere to your hotels and someone else is taking care of your luggage, it’s less of a concern.

Just tip well if someone’s traipsing up and down the caldera steps in Santorini with loads of heavy luggage. And don’t make the donkeys do that work either.

Pack things that:

  • will help keep you cool
  • are suitable options on particularly windy days
  • can be washed and dried easily
  • that work well together so you can make a number of outfits from the same pieces

See What To Wear In Santorini Greece For A Happy Trip, and if you’re travelling in the summer the Ultimate Summer Greece Packing List: What to Pack for the Greek Islands

You’ll also want:

  • some cooling shorts to stop your thighs chaffing
  • comfortable flat shoes/sandals – you’ll walk miles round ancient ruins and archaeological sites not to mention village steps
  • skirt/sarong that covers the knees or that you can use for your shoulders to enter monasteries and churches
  • light jumper or jacket for the evening in the shoulder season

On The Beach

Are you imagining yourself on a beautiful golden sand beach by the Ionian Sea, or maybe the Aegean Sea? If so, here are a couple of things you might want to know about Greek beaches.

Organised and unorganised beaches

These are the categories that Greeks split their beaches into. Unorganised means it’s a normal beach with no beds/umbrellas etc. There may or not be facilities nearby to get drinks or snacks.

An organised beach is one where you’ll find sunbeds and umbrellas and often a beach bar of some kind. Sometimes that’s a little hut and sometimes it’s a full-on restaurant or beach club .

greece travel in february

They’re normally a cost involved in taking a bed. It’s either a set charge for a bed and umbrella and prices can be set differently for each row, i.e. you’ll pay more for a front-row spot next to the sea.

Or, you can use the sunbeds if you buy food or drink from the bar. Prices can vary wildly depending on the island.

Usually, there’s some space on the organised beaches where you can lay down a towel so you can go without having to pay for a bed.

Nudist Beaches

Technically these don’t exist in Greece although you might find some on Google Maps. People go topless or fully nude on some of the tucked-away beaches or at the far end of some more popular ones.

Solo Travellers at the Beach

As a solo traveller , I always leave my belongings unguarded on the beach. There are waterproof pouches you can get to take things with you while you’re swimming, but I worry more that I’ll lose everything in the sea.

Make up your own mind about what you’re comfortable doing but know that it’s common for people to do this without a thought. You can always leave your valuables in your hotel room safe.

Dogs on the Beach

Unless it’s a Blue Flag Beach, dogs are allowed on Greek beaches so be aware of that.

Getting Around

There is an Uber app in Athens but it will just call you a normal yellow taxi. I haven’t used it but have used the Free Now app many times which is the same sort of thing.

Public transportation in Athens is good with an easy-to-use Metro system , train travel, a tram network and many buses. On the islands, the quality of public transport really varies, particularly on the small islands. Check my island guides for getting around before you go.

Do I Need to Be Concerned About Petty Crime?

Like all big cities, Athens does see some petty and opportunistic crime, particularly in touristy areas. When you’re in the city centre wherever you’re visiting be sensible with your belongings.

I’ve heard of a lot of tourists from the United States who like to use a money belt under their clothes. I haven’t done that, but I do tend to keep my valuables zipped away in an internal pocket in my bag.

Keep your bag close if you’re enjoying a meal at a Greek restaurant in tourist area or when you’re around tourist sites. Don’t make it easy for someone to grab your stuff.

greece travel in february

Also, keep your wits about you on the Metro and around the city in general. Some groups have scams where they’ll divert attention and then pickpocket.

In rural areas like on the islands, things are very laid back. It can be one of the best things about them! You might be asked to leave the keys under the mat in your rental car when you go.

Or if you arrive at your hotel late at night, they’ll just leave the key in the door for you.

Accommodation FAQs

Why am i being asked for my passport number.

It’s quite common in Greece to give your passport number for things so don’t be alarmed. It’s not about recording you, it’s about the recipient allocating payment for tax purposes.

Hotels will normally take a copy of your passport when you check-in. That’s normal in many countries.

Every Airbnb needs to take your name and passport number to be recorded for tax. I’ve also had to give my passport or Greek ID when I’ve booked a car through an app (using iMove in Mykonos, for example) or other private transfer.

What is the city tax I’m being charged?

City tax is a compulsory charge that you often have to pay in cash at your accommodation even if you’ve paid for your room online. Sometimes, it’s included if you’ve paid upfront on booking.com or similar.

The listing will tell you when you book whether the city tax is included or not.

If you need to pay it when you leave, it’s usually around 50 cents per night, although I think Santorini’s is a bit higher. You need to pay your city tax in cash.

greece travel in february

Why am I being asked to pay by wire transfer?

In the UK and Europe, it’s not at all unusual to pay friends or sometimes businesses by bank transfer. That might be different to what you’re used to if you’re from the US. But don’t immediately think you’re being scammed.

Even established hotels might ask for you to pay this way. I’ve noticed that a lot of businesses in Greece use a Facebook page as their website. So many simply don’t have the facilities set up to take payments online.

If you feel uneasy about any transaction, then go with your gut. But just be aware it’s not necessarily an unusual request. I saw a thread in a travel group on Facebook where someone asked about this and all the advice was that it must be dodgy and to stay well clear.

People were saying this particularly because the accompanying email was written in less-than-perfect English. Understand that the culture is different in different countries.

Also, be aware that if someone is responding to you in a second or third language, their English is unlikely to be perfect. It doesn’t mean there’s an issue.

Day-to-Day Practicalities

When are greek public holidays.

You can see upcoming  Greek public holiday dates  here. Shops and businesses are normally closed although tavernas remain open. During the summer season, touristy places will run on.

Orthodox Easter  is usually end of April/beginning of May and can be a busy time for accommodation and ferries.

15th August Holiday  (called the Fifteenth of August!) is also a huge day in Greece. The islands can be ferry crowded as Greeks are usually on holiday with their families at that time anyway. Tinos is mobbed on this holiday.

Do shops/Stores close on Sundays?

Sundays are also public holidays,  but touristy places during the summer season will open all week. In the off-season, you might find some mini-markets / small stores that are also open on Sundays.

Chemists/pharmacies on the islands are usually closed at the weekend, although it varies. When I lived on Paros, they were open on Saturdays, but that wasn’t the case when I lived on Naxos. There are phone numbers on the door for each weekend though, that will tell you which pharmacy is on call for emergencies.

Main supermarkets are usually closed on Sundays.

Are the opening hours on Google Maps accurate?

Be aware that many businesses are seasonal. Often they put in their opening hours for summer and then leave them year-round. Probably they don’t expect people to be looking in the off-season.

If you’re travelling in the winter, you can see if the business has updated its hours recently. (You can see if there’s a message from Google saying the hours have been updated X number of days or weeks ago by the business).

If there’s no message and you’re making a special trip, then call before you go. Other restaurants and tavernas are really helpful and mark themselves as temporarily closed.

What are afternoon quiet hours?

Quiet hours are like Spanish siesta times. They change with the season but are usually around 3/3:30pm – 5-6pm.

Because it gets so hot in summer Greeks stay up late to take advantage of the cooler air and then sleep in the hottest part of the day. You’ll see whole families, including toddlers, going for a walk or a meal at 10pm.

Business hours for shops are usually along the lines of Monday and Wednesday 9am – 3pm and Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday 9 – 2pm and 5:30pm – 9pm . It can vary a bit and some places don’t open again on Saturday evenings. Department stores and supermarkets tend to stay open all the way through.

The quiet hours between 2/3pm and 5:30pm are taken seriously. You aren’t allowed to blare music from your car radio, talk loudly outside etc and builders can’t usually work through quiet hours. It’s like breach of the peace after 11pm in the UK would be.

Please be respectful of quiet hours. In island villages, holiday accommodation is often mixed in with residential accommodation and in very close proximity.

Be aware that people in the apartments around you might be sleeping in the afternoon. They usually have to get up early after being up late so they need the extra nap time.

Power Sockets, Plugs and Voltage

The plugs, sockets and voltage in Greece are different to many areas of the world. Unless you’re coming from somewhere with European appliances you’ll need a travel adapter for your device plugs. You might also need a converter so that your items work on the Greek voltage and electrical frequency.

Where can I do laundry/washing?

If you just want to do a little bit of handwashing during your stay, don’t bother bringing travel wash. Pick up a small box of powder from the shop. It’s really cheap, I think it’s more effective, and many places will provide a small washing bowl in your room

greece travel in february

Chuck everything in overnight, rinse it and hang it out to dry in the morning.

For a mid-stay load make sure you book at least a night or two in an apartment with a washing machine. Or head to the local laundry/laundrette.

greece travel in february

Note that not every island will have a laundry, and many that do literally are laundries, not self-service laundrettes. I’ve used a few in different places, and the turnaround time has been about 2 hours.

On average, I’ve paid between 5 euro for wash up to 15 euro (Santorini) for wash and dry. Although I think one place in Mykonos was something ridiculous, like 18 euro. If you don’t want them to use fabric softener you need to really insist that they don’t.

I usually just get my stuff washed and I dry it where I’m staying as I think that’s much nicer to dry it outside. However, it will depend on the size and facilities of your accommodation plus the time of year you visit.

Easywash is a brand of self-service laundrettes and you can see all their locations here . You can also use Google Maps to find laundries in the area you’re visiting. This post on 15 Best Apps For Greece Travel might be helpful.

How do I open the windows/doors?

Ok, this sounds like a random one. But I know from my experience in the hospitality industry, and now in Greece, that windows and doors can flummox visitors in different countries!

The type of window below is quite common in Greece (and Europe), and the same design is used for doors too.

If you’re playing around with the handle to see how it works, you can get a fright when the door angles back from the top. The first time I encountered a door like this in the UK, I thought the whole thing was falling on me!

Close the window with the handle down

How do I get hot water?

Solar-heated water is common in Greece. You’ll have water when the sun has had a chance to heat the tank. In that case, you might not have water first thing.

Once the water’s heated, it could cool down in the evening if it’s not hot enough outside to keep it warm. So, you may need to be strategic about when you have a shower.

Some water tanks are heated electrically, like an immersion heater. More than likely, the switch on the fuse board will be kept off until you need it.

If you’re staying in an apartment or villa, this might be the case. If so, you’ll need to flip the switch for about 20 minutes to let the tank heat up.

greece travel in february

Make sure you turn off the switch before you get in the shower.  Water and electricity don’t mix, and standards of installation might not be as high as you’re used to.

Can I drink the tap water?

The general answer you’ll find on the islands is no, however, there are exceptions. Like on Paros . But don’t worry, you don’t necessarily need to buy single-use plastic bottles for your whole stay.

The Greek water supply is subject to the same levels of cleanliness as the rest of the EU. Unless you’re somewhere remote you’re getting water from the mains.

So cleanliness isn’t really the issue. It’s more that seawater can mix with the mains water. Many islands don’t have desalination plants and don’t remove any of the excess minerals/salts that the water contains.

@bucketlistmylife Don’t drink the tap water here! Walk with me… #greekislandlife #bucketlisters #over40andloveit #housesitter #naxos ♬ From Now On – Hugh Jackman & The Greatest Showman Ensemble

If you’re in cities like Athens, it’s ok to drink the water from the kitchen tap. However, on most islands, you’ll be told not to do that. The villages have public taps in the street but check locally whether this is good to drink.

In some places, I understand they’re supplied by a spring, and it’s fine to drink. In other places I’ve stayed, the public taps in the village were the same as the kitchen tap water, and I was told it was not a good idea to drink from.

10 litres of water for 10 – 20c in Syros and Paros, Free in Andros

In the supermarket, a 1.5l bottle of water will cost about 30c. Although there’s a  big awareness campaign on Paros  to show people the water is safe to drink, you might still prefer filtered. In which case you’re in luck.

Syros and Paros both have big units in several points across the islands where you can get 10l of water for 10c (Paros) or 20c (Syros). You’ll obviously need a few bottles to fill, or ideally a 10l container. Find out more about the locations in Paros here .

In Syros, I’ve seen them on the road to Vari (just before the village, travelling from town) and on the big roundabout along from the Lidl and the bus station, where the taxis stop. Ask about them at your accommodation.

In  Andros ,  these machines are free to use.

Is it true I can’t flush the toilet paper ?

Yes, it is. Greece was ahead of its time and invited toilets before toilet paper was a thing. Therefore, the pipes used were really narrow. As things changed, it didn’t make sense to overall the entire country’s plumbing system so the same tiny pipes are still used today.

You’ll find a small bin in the toilets where you throw your toilet paper (and anything else you need to dispose of).

The bin bags get thrown out with the normal rubbish when they’re full. If you’re staying in a hotel or serviced apartment, housekeeping will come in regularly to remove and replace your bin bags.

I hate it, and as a rule, I take the bin bag out myself. What a horrible job for someone else to have to do for me. If that’s not practical, I always tie the top to try and make it marginally less unpleasant.

Are public toilets easy to find?

It’s generally quite acceptable to pop into the nearest taverna and ask to use their loo. I always think it’s polite to buy a drink to take away, but I’m not sure it’s expected.

You will find public toilets on the more popular islands, but the state of them can’t be guaranteed. I’d recommend always having some tissues in your bag. Oh, and they’ll likely be holes in the ground with a porcelain plate to stand on.

greece travel in february

There’s often   a toilet at the port of the larger islands. In my experience, they’re generally not awful during the peak season.

Alternatively, petrol stations usually have public toilets. The larger chains like BP mostly keep them in good condition. Local ones might ask you to wait a moment while they clean it for you!

Supermarkets are another option you can ask in. AB Supermarkets always seem to have a decent customer toilet.

Travel Insurance

All I have to say about this is make sure you get some for Greece travel adventure. Get something that repatriates you to your home country if you have an accident or get ill with something like COVID.

Historically I’ve been really rubbish with this because a lot of my travel was within the EU while the UK was part of it. But I’ve heard a lot of horror stories recently about people travelling without insurance. (Globally, that is, not necessarily in Greece.)

Insurance will cover you if there’s an issue with your flights or baggage (check the terms carefully) as well as medical issues. So it can really save your vacation if things go awry.

Animal Welfare

It’s really common to see stray cats all over Greece . They’re supposed to be cared for by the local Municipality (council) who should provide water and dry food.

But often, the responsibility is, wrongly left to animal welfare associations. These are usually set up by foreigners.

You can help by taking a cat to the vet to get neutered; perhaps talk to the welfare association first. A clip in the ear means that a cat has already been sterilised.

greece travel in february

If you’re self-catering for any part of your trip and are eating anything from a tin can, please crush it before binning it. Many cats live in and around the bins, and they will scavenge anything.

If there is the tiniest bit of food in a can, they’ll get their head in to eat it. The problem is, they can’t always get their head back out again.  So please crush your cans .

Although there used to be an issue with packs of stray dogs, over the last 10 years, that’s really changed. At least on the islands. On the mainland, particularly in the north, I’m aware that you might still encounter packs of dogs.

However, you will still see stray dogs on the road. Sometimes it’s hard to know whether they really are stray. Many Greek owners let their dogs run about on the road. If a dog has a collar on then that usually means it belongs to someone.

greece travel in february

If you see a dog in a bad way, regardless of whether it has a collar, report it to the island’s animal welfare association.

greece travel in february

Farm animals

Many Greek farmers are using modern farming techniques and treat their productive animals well. But something you might see is hobbling, where horses, goats, sheep and cows have their front and back legs tied together with rope or wire.

This is illegal and you can report it to the local police. You need to take pictures but  there are guidelines you can read here

Visiting Greece in Winter

A lot of the travel tips I’ve given above hold true whatever time of year you visit the Greek isles. But if you’re thinking of visiting Greece in winter, there are things to know.

greece travel in february

Greek Islands in Winter – Do they Close?

This is such a common question. The answer is that no Greek island “closes” in winter . People live on the islands all year round.

But, in terms of what’s available from a tourist point of view, many of the restaurants, shops, services, hotels and tours provided for them do close down over the winter.

If you want to visit the islands between October/November and April, then be aware you’re going to have a different experience than in the summer.

Here’s what it’s like in Santorini in October and November and Paros in October .

You can still enjoy Greek culture and indulge in Greek cuisine. The incredible beaches are still there. But unless you’re a hardened cold-water swimmer, you’re not going to be doing anything other than going for a bracing walk along the sand.

If you want to visit Greece in the winter, you’re best doing a city break in Athens or exploring the mainland.

Here’s what to expect from Greece in November , and Christmas time in Athens .

Island-hopping is still possible if you stick to a particular ferry route. For example, Paros, Naxos, Ios, Santorini. But you’ll be going for the views, hiking and food and not beaches, boat trips and partying.

Important Greece Travel Tips for Winter

  • staying in island accommodation that’s designed for the summer isn’t fun in winter. A lot of homes are drafty, damp, have no heating and only have hot water if the sun shines for long enough.
  • most touristy tours and trips don’t run in winter. For example, if you visit Mykonos after October/November there’s no way to get over to Delos to see the ancient ruins
  • local public transport routes can reduce after the peak season
  • ferry routes and flight options vastly reduce after October and sea journey times can be much longer than in summer
  • generally, it doesn’t snow on the islands although it can. Mostly, it’s rainy and windy, although it can vary between the island groups
  • If you’re particularly looking for snow and cosy cabins, then head to the mainland for ski resorts and mountainous destinations

Do I Need a Visa?

Currently, citizens from the UK, USA, Australia and the EU do not need a visa to enter Greece for a period of up to 90 days within a rolling 180-day period.

From 2025, you still won’t need a visa, but third-party nationals from countries like the US, UK and Australia will need an ETIAS. This is a visa waiver and is required before travel. You apply online and once approved, the ETIAS is valid for three years.

Hottest Greek Islands in February: Where to Escape the Winter Chill

posted by Eleni Vasiliadis on July 5, 2023 // last updated on July 14, 2023

February may not be the most popular time to visit the Greek islands, but it can be an excellent opportunity for those who enjoy exploring without the crowds. While the temperatures may not be as hot as in the summer months, there are still some Greek islands that offer pleasant weather and a range of activities to enjoy.

Kos is one of the warmest Greek islands in February, with an average maximum temperature of 14ºC and around six hours of daily sunshine. The island’s southerly location ensures that it remains consistently warm throughout the winter months. Visitors can explore the island’s quaint villages, experience traditional local life, and even enjoy some time on the beach if the weather permits.

Rhodes is another popular option for those looking to escape the winter chill. As the fourth-largest island in Greece, Rhodes offers a range of attractions, including the stunning medieval Old Town, ancient ruins, and beautiful beaches. While the temperatures may not be as warm as in the summer months, visitors can still enjoy mild weather and plenty of sunshine.

Weather and Climate

<p>The Acropolis is the most famous archeological site in Athens. It is a citadel located on a hill in the center of Athens. It contains several famous ancient buildings such as The Parthenon and The Temple of Athena.</p>

<p>In our opinion, Monastiraki is one of the most beautiful squares in Athens. It is named Monastiraki due to a church in the middle of the square. The Church of Pantanassa was built in the 10th century, and after some time, the locals started calling it “Monastiraki,” which means little church.</p><p>The church is not the only thing that makes this part of Athens beautiful. The narrow cobblestone streets leading to the square give the feeling of being somewhere far from home. The streets are filled with pastry shops, tavernas, and souvenir shops.</p><p>There is one downside to mention. The streets are filled with people who offer you bracelets or some other forms of hand-woven jewelry for free, saying it is a gift from them and that you don’t need to pay. However, from the moment they put the piece on you, they start asking for money and feign ignorance of any previous conversation. It is advisable to just return the “gift” they give you and continue on your way.</p>

2. Lose Yourself in the Monastiraki Square

Here’s another thing to do in Athens. The Monastiraki Square is a very cool and interesting-looking place. Narrow streets filled with restaurants and souvenir shops leading to the square with a small church will make this experience very immersive for anyone who visits it.

<p>The Corinth Canal is technically not in Athens itself but rather on the outskirts of town. It is a canal that connects the Gulf of Corinth with The Ionian Sea, and it has been in the making since AD 1. When we say in the making, we mean they tried to make it but failed many times. Finally, in 1893, it was finished. The canal is a very creepy place. It is very deep and rather narrow, so you feel impending doom when you stand on that tiny suspension bridge while a harrowing wind tries to push you over the edge, and the ships below seem like little remote-controlled toys. </p>
