Best time to visit.

Greece generally has a mild, Mediterranean climate, with July and August being the busiest months for tourism. With warm weather and plentiful sunshine, this is a great time for visiting the islands, swimming in the sea and lazing on the beach. Summers are generally hot and dry, with daytime temperatures rising to 85°-100°F ( 30°-38°C ).

By mid-September, temperatures begin to fall and crowds thin, but it can still be hot. The weather remains generally calm and balmy well into October. If you can't get to Greece in the spring, and beaches are not your primary goal, this is a fine time to visit. By late October, ferry service and flights are cutting back and most facilities on the islands begin to close for the winter. But the cooler atmosphere makes   Athens   and the mainland all the more pleasant.

Culture and customs

Greece’s culture is very much influenced by its ancient past. The hallmarks of Western medicine, philosophy, drama, and government can all be attributed to the mighty ancient Greek civilization – which is an incredible source of national pride. Traditional music and dance are still valued and used to commemorate celebrations throughout the year. The circle dance, for instance, dates to the Byzantine period. Even contemporary cuisine has its roots in ancient tradition.

Greeks place a high amount of value on ‘kefi’, which loosely translates to joy or passion. Life is meant to be lived to the fullest. For this reason, meals are leisurely and social gatherings are frequent, typically involving drinking, dancing and lively discussion. Common Greek customs, like smashing plates and dancing with a glass of water on your head, are considered expressions of kefi.

With more than 90% of the population being Greek Orthodox, religion plays an important part in everyday life. Religious festivals and ceremonies are commonplace, both in the mainland cities and small rural villages. Christmas and Easter are particularly important dates on the calendar, although religious celebrations are not limited to these times as there are daily, weekly and annual rites and rituals performed all throughout Greece’s mainland and islands.

Food and drink

Greek cuisine favors simplicity and relies primarily on fresh local produce. Think vegetables, beans, nuts, and grains; grilled meats and fresh fish; parsley, garlic, dill, and mint; and punchy cheeses such as feta, kefalotyri, and halloumi. Drinks-wise, locals will savor a Greek coffee at a kafeneio (coffeehouse) or glass of anise-flavored ouzo (diluted with water) at an ouzeri – along with a couple of mezedhes (appetizers) – for hours. There’s also tsipouru (fermented distilled grape skins), raki (a tsipouru from Crete), and retsina (white wine flavored with pine resin).

Geography and environment

Sharing land borders with Albania , Bulgaria , Turkey, and Macedonia , Greece is located in Southern Europe and is surrounded by the Ionian, Mediterranean, and Aegean Seas. Consisting of the mainland peninsula and an archipelago of more than 3000 islands, Greece is typically mountainous, containing peaks, karsts, and canyons all over. Despite the mountainous topography, there is much arable land in Greece with small-scale farms successfully producing olives, peaches, melons, grapes, tomatoes, and grain for export and local use.

Greece’s highest peak, Mount Olympus, is famed for being the dwelling place of the 12 ancient gods in Greek mythology. The islands are mostly uninhabited and are formed in small chains (called archipelagos) within the Aegean Sea. Santorini , Mykonos, and Corfu are among the more popular islands with tourists, though Crete and Evia are the largest islands.

History and government

Early history.

The early history of Greece is among the world’s most fascinating, and like the other ancient civilizations of Egypt and Rome, Greece has many monuments still standing after centuries. The Greeks have been both the conquerors and the conquered, withstood the Plague and other natural disasters, and birthed some of the greatest literature, scientific developments, mathematical formulas, and thought movements.

Recent history

In 1821, the Greeks fought against Ottoman rule during the Greek War of Independence, which resulted in Greece being recognized as an autonomous region in 1828. This was a time of great upheaval for the Greek people, with political assassinations, battles, and plundering. After autonomy was granted, many years of change followed, with continued war and confrontation alongside intermittent periods of relative peace. The two World Wars had a profound effect on Greece, with many battles fought in Greece during the early 1940s (during the Axis occupation). Athens was liberated from this occupation in 1944 and the Greek government was restored. Greece joined the United Nations (as a founding member) in 1945 and NATO in 1952. During this time, many Greeks started moving to other parts of the world in a mass wave of widespread migration. The USA , Australia, and Europe were popular destinations in this move, which saw hundreds of thousands of Greeks immigrate to other lands. In 2004, Athens successfully hosted the Summer Olympics once again. Yet more recently, Greece has come under the shadow of the European debt crisis which has crippled the economy. Despite this, the spirit of the Greek people endures as it has for eons.

Shopping hours vary throughout Greece. Stores in large cities and tourist areas are typically open from 9 am to 9 pm, while shops in other areas close around 2 or 3 pm and reopen between 6 and 9 pm three days a week (Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday). Most stores are closed on Sundays.

Things to buy in Greece

1. Komboloi (Worry Beads)

These stress-relieving resin beads are meant to be turned through your fingers as you muse over life. With roots deep in ancient Greek cultural tradition, they make a great souvenir for friends wanting a slice of authentic Greece.

2. Botanical Skincare

Greece is home to many brands of premium, organic skincare. Stock up on luxurious olive oil soap or enriching yogurt-based moisturizers before you head home.

Travel safely and ward off evil by attaching a Mati (an ‘Evil Eye’) to your backpack. They’re cheap, available almost everywhere in Greece, and are a great reminder of your travels in the Aegean.

Whether you prefer gold, silver, amber resin or colorful beads, Greece has a huge variety of jewelry on offer. Prices are typically lower than in many other parts of the world, so it’s likely you’ll be able to snap up a few bargains.

Festivals and events in Greece

The Greeks have been partying since the dawn of Western civilization. Take Epicurus – he dedicated his life to seeking out pleasure, creating a philosophy now known as Epicureanism. As you travel through Greece you’ll encounter religious celebrations – Greek Orthodox is the main player here – that span the nation, as well as smaller celebrations that are regional affairs or isolated to particular islands. Expect food, drink, dancing and music, and plenty of throwbacks to the ancient Greeks. The only Greek tragedy is that you can’t fit every festival in.

Greece is best experienced outside of winter for most travelers. The best time of year depends on what kind of holiday you’re after – whether you’re more interested in soaking up the island sun or ancient history.

Is it safe to visit Greece?

Greece has historically been a very safe place to visit though petty crime, like pickpocketing, can be an issue in well-touristed areas. Travelers should remain alert when visiting crowded places and keep an eye on their belongings.

Citizens of Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the US, the UK and other member countries of the EU and Schengen area are included under this arrangement. Other countries do require a visa to visit Greece.

Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveler. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information. Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you’re visiting for detailed and up-to-date visa information specific to your nationality. Check the Essential Trip Information section of the itinerary for more information.

Flushable, Western-style toilets are the norm in Greece. You may need to pay a small fee to use public toilets in some areas. Keep in mind that the Greek plumbing system isn’t the greatest and you may be asked to put toilet paper in the trash rather than flushing it.

Greece’s unit of currency is the euro:

  • A takeaway souvlaki or gyros = EUR € 3-6
  • Bottle of wine from the supermarket = EUR € 5–8
  • Meal in a local cafe = EUR € 15

  • Ticket for the Acropolis (including other ancient sites) = EUR € 10-20

  • Espresso coffee = EUR €1.50

Credit cards are widely accepted in  Greece , particularly in the tourist areas. It’s actually a legal requirement, as a response to the financial crisis, that working Greek citizens aged below 65 have a credit card so most hotels, shops, cafes and restaurants should offer the option of paying by credit card.

Though same-sex marriage is not legal, marriages performed in the EU have been recognized since 2018 and discrimination against sexual orientation or gender identity is banned by law.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

If you are traveling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at the time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. Is Greece accessible for travelers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Though access to sights and hotels has improved in Athens over recent years, Greece is a difficult destination for travelers with disabilities. It’s a hilly, rocky place covered in cobblestones, particularly on the islands, and the economic situation has meant that there are minimal public funds to improve the situation.

If you do live with a visual, hearing, or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you, and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

What should I wear in Greece?

What to pack for Greece will depend on where you're going and what time of year you decide to visit. Comfortable walking shoes are essential all year round, as is a jumper in case a cool wind blows.

If you visit in summer, you’ll need light, breathable clothing, sunglasses, a hat, swimwear and sandals.

If you’re heading to the mountains on the mainland, it’s best to be prepared for everything as the weather can change quickly.

What are some common phrases to learn before traveling to Greece?

Greek is a very difficult language to learn. However, it's easy enough to master a couple of common words such as 'hello' (yah-soo) and 'please' (para-kah-LOE). Not only will this help you communicate with the locals, but it'll allow you to form a deeper connection to the places you're visiting and the people you meet along the way.

How many islands are there in Greece?

There are roughly 6,000 islands and islets in Greece, of which only about 200 are populated. Each island offers spectacular views of the surrounding seas, golden beaches to lie out on, and ancient old towns full of fascinating sites.

Greece tours by region.

Greece entices visitors with its timeless treasures, which culminate in its capital city of Athens. In this Greek metropolis, antiquity and modern life coexist. A trip to the Museum of Greek Folk Art affords glimpses into Grecian living, while the Acropolis, home of the iconic Parthenon, provides a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Athens is a place where myths and modernity are equally embraced. A place where mopeds weave through traffic against a backdrop of renowned ancient ruins – and where art, music, dance, and laughter are served up nightly. And most of the time the city is just your introduction to the wonderful vacation destination that is Greece.

Here’s a brief summary of some of our favorite places to add to your list once you start looking at Greek tours. Whichever tour of Greece you choose, you’ll enjoy expert guides, enriching experiences, and VIP entrance at legendary sites. What are you waiting for? The treasures of Greece and its islands await your discovery.

Greek Ionian Islands & the Aegean Tours

Greece’s remarkable history and beauty stretch beyond the mainland to an archipelago of roughly 2,000 islands featuring untouched natural areas and incomparable Mediterranean retreats. Ionian tours, or Greek island hopper tours, will typically visit Santorini and Mykonos, to explore the islands where gleaming whitewashed buildings, cerulean blue domes, and tumbling cerise bougainvillea line high cliffs encircling beautiful azure bays. When most travelers visit the Aegean Islands or go on an Aegean cruise, they enjoy time lazing on the sun-soaked beaches of Santorini. Adventurers and photographers alike shouldn’t miss the chance to ascend the island's highest point for a stunning view of the iconic landscapes of the Cyclades. On Mykonos, grab a front-row seat to the goings-on in the old port. Sit perched on one of the brightly painted wooden balconies characteristic of the island's "Little Venice," or wander through the shopping streets of Chora village and see the 16th-century windmills of Kato Mili that look out over the bay. For history lovers, a visit to nearby Delos is a must to see the legendary birthplace of Apollo and his twin sister Artemis.

Northern & Central Greece Tours

When you visit Central Greece, you’ll certainly want to go on a Delphi tour, and pay your respects at Thermopylae. On one of our Central Greece tours, you can tread in the footsteps of the ancient Greeks, who would descend on the sanctuary of Delphi to consult with the most important oracle in the classical world, and walk the Sacred Way to the 4th-century Temple of Apollo to view the statues immortalizing the strength of the athletes who once competed in the Pythian Games, held in honor of Apollo and the Arts. Stop to honor history in Thermopylae, famous for the heroic defense by Leonidas and his brave Spartans against the invading Persians. Travel just a short way north of Delphi, to stand in awe of the six Eastern Orthodox monasteries that cling impressively to immense, rounded rock towers, known as the Meteora, a UNESCO World Heritage site. When booking a tour expecting to see the best of Greece, make sure Delphi, Thermopylae, and the Meteora are on your itinerary.

Western Greece Tours

The top spots to see when you visit West Greece are Corinth, Olympia, Nafplio, and the ancient city of Mycenae. Corinth is renowned for its long-standing pottery craft. And Olympia is home to the famed site where the Olympic Games were first held in 776 B.C. While there, check out the ruined Temple of Zeus, the athlete's gymnasium, and the Ancient Stadium of Olympia. Travel to the elegant town of Nafplio, known for its beautiful architecture, colorful shops and cafés. Most Western Greece trips will visit the ruined city of Mycenae. Walk through the Lion Gate, visit the royal beehive-tombs, and see the giant Cyclopean stones used to build the city walls.

Crete Tours

Visit Crete, home to the birthplace of Zeus according to Greek mythology. Typically, Crete tours require a lovely short sail or ferry to the island. One of the best ways to experience the area is to book a tour with an Aegean cruise, so there’s no worry about figuring out sailings to and from the famous islands. On Crete, Europe’s oldest city comes to life on a visit to the Palace of Knossos in Heraklion. Walk through its imposing northern entrance and admire the bright wall paintings that were restored at the turn of the 20th century, revealing insights into Minoan civilization several thousand years before Christ. Explore the famous Bronze Age archaeological site, and learn of King Minos' labyrinth and the legend of the Minotaur.

  • Ephesus : Discover one of the world's finest ancient sites. Led by your Local Specialist, walk the Arcadian Way, see the Library of Celsus and Amphitheatre and visit the House of the Virgin Mary.
  • Rhodes : With your Local Specialist, explore the classical Acropolis of Lindos and the Temple of Athena in Rhodes. These awe-inspiring ruins date back to the 4th century and offer panoramic views of the stunning coastline.
  • Mykonos : View the Windmills of Kato Mili and wander the beautiful blue and white streets of Chora.
  • How many days should I spend in Greece? Plan to stay for at least seven days in Greece. This way, you will be able to experience much of what Athens has to offer and get the chance to visit more than one Greek island. If you’re looking to tour beyond Athens and want to experience Central, Western, or Northern Greece, along with any island hopping you want to do, you should plan to stay for eight to fifteen days.
  • Is it cheaper to fly into Athens or Santorini? Like most major cities, it is often cheaper to fly into and out of Athens than the small airport at Santorini. As Athens has an international airport, it’s typically a cheaper option for an inbound flight destination. So, if you are looking to save money, check out flights in and out of Athens first. If you’re looking to end or begin your trip in the island region, try looking into one-way flights depending on where you’d like to start or finish your trip.

Why Should You Visit Greece?

Land of kings, gods, and empires, Greece offers something for all types of travelers. Famous for its history, sun-drenched Aegean islands and warm, hospitable people, it’s no wonder Greece remains a highly sought-after vacation spot. Ancient ruins dot the capital city, Athens, including the 5th-century Acropolis with the Parthenon temple, Temple of Olympian Zeus, and the Ancient Agora.

Elsewhere on mainland Greece, the pinnacles of Meteora, an incredible complex of Eastern Orthodox monasteries, Mount Olympus, the Sacred Way of Delphi, and the Temple of Apollo await those who seek to take a step out of time. And, it’s easy to imagine courageous Spartans fighting under King Leonidas at Thermopylae, or the original athletes of the Ancient Olympic Games in Olympia.

Those seeking some sun, fun, and relaxation should set sail on the sapphire waters of the Ionian and Aegean seas to discover the whitewashed windmills of Mykonos, picturesque Oia and the volcanic beaches of Santorini. On Crete, the largest Greek island, near Heraklion, you’ll find the Bronze Age site of Knossos, legendary for the mythical Minotaur and Minoan civilization.

Athens and santorini: your way, athens and central crete: your way, more about greece.

In southeastern Europe, the idyllic islands of Greece sit amidst the waters of the Mediterranean Sea, encompassing the Aegean Sea. As the cradle of ancient civilization, Greece is home to many ancient ruins like the Acropolis of Athens in the heart of Ancient Greece. In the southern part of the Aegean Sea, Crete is the largest of the Greek islands and home to the main Bronze Age archaeological site, the Palace of Knossos, the home of the Minotaur. In the northern part of the Aegean Sea, Mykonos offers sun-kissed, sandy beaches, beach clubs and vibrant nightlife. South of Mykonos, the white-washed buildings of Santorini are perched atop cliffs that sit gracefully against the azure skies, offering one-of-a-kind views. Greece is a living canvas of awe-inspiring history and natural splendor. Embark on a journey through both the ancient wonders and contemporary delights, and taste the country's rich culinary heritage with flavorful Mediterranean dishes.

sell 11 Day Deluxe Greece 2024

11 Days / 9 Nights   Starting at $4450 PP (Land Rate)

Before Rome, there was Greece—the Island Empire with 6000 islands in all. If it’s your first time, expect a life-altering experience. View beautiful Athens from high atop the Acropolis. Visit the islands, each with different shapes, sizes and personalities. Lay a towel out on the most beautiful beaches in the world. Taste the seafood, meats, cheeses, vegetables and wines—as fresh as God intended.

Welcome to Greece, the Perillo way—authentic, friendly, and, of course, with excellent accommodations .

Your overnight flight to Greece may bring on dreams of Zeus and Apollo, but fear not, the gods are on your side tonight. After all – we’re visiting their homeland!

Upon arrival to Athens’ newly constructed airport, your Perillo Tours representative will greet you and privately transfer you to your deluxe 5-star hotel in the heart of Athens. You will be assisted with your check-in for a smooth and effortless experience.

Time to relax and adjust to your new time. We’ve arranged a welcome cocktail followed by a scrumptious roof top dinner with breathtaking views as you watch the sunset.

Begin your journey back to ancient Greece, “the cradle of civilization”. Your sightseeing tour brings us to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Royal Palace, the Pan-Athenian Stadium and the Temple of Olympian Zeus. Stop at the first Olympic Games of the modern era held in 1896 followed by the world-famous Acropolis.

Visit the architectural masterpieces of the Golden Age of Athens: the Propylaea, the Temple of Athena Nike, the Erechtheio and finally—the glorious Parthenon and the Acropolis Museum, with its many priceless artifacts.

After, a fun walking tour in the Plaka and central market. We stop for lunch at a typical local taverna. The rest of the day is at leisure to shop or just stroll.

Morning is at leisure. In the afternoon we depart for Cape Sounion. Marvel over one of Greece’s most photographed monuments on this half-day tour to the Temple of Poseidon from Athens.

Wind your way along the coastal cliffs and beaches on the scenic drive to Cape Sounion, then grab your camera as you spot the magnificent remains of the Temple of Poseidon, perched high on the sea cliffs.

You have a chance to get up close to the ancient monument, explore ruins dating back to 444 BC, and soak up the impressive coastal views. Dinner follows at a local fish restaurant before returning to your hotel.

After breakfast we depart for Piraeus Port to board the highspeed ferry to Mykonos Island.

On this jet-set island, beautiful beaches, chic boutiques, and elegant nightclubs - all vie for the tourist’s attention. Beneath its sophisticated surface, however, lies a quintessential Greek island. Hundreds of tiny chapels dot the island and sheep graze in the shadow of whitewashed windmills.

Visit Little Venice in Mykonos, find a table on the waterfront and bask in the serenity of sunset over the picturesque harbor. Be sure to send your regards to Pete the Pelican.

Located only 3 ½ nautical miles from Mykonos by ship, in ancient times Delos was the spiritual center of the Cycladic Islands and as the mythical birthplace of Apollo, it was considered a sacred island.

Today Delos is essentially a large archeological site, with its ruins taking up almost 1-square mile and with no inhabitants except members of the French School of Archeology who have been excavating the island for over 100-years. Overnight stays on the island are forbidden.

Return for a leisure afternoon. Evening a dinner awaits you in the town.

After breakfast the day is at leisure to explore, swim or shop till you drop. If so inclined, we offer an optional cooking class to learn a traditional Mykonian dish from the freshest of ingredients.

Today we depart Mykonos for Santorini by superfast ferry. Upon arrival to Santorini, you will be transferred to your hotel in Fira. Late afternoon, you will be picked up for a Fira walking tour followed by dinner.

Today we begin with a visit to Pyrgos, the best-preserved medieval village on the island. It is situated at the foot of Mt. Profitis Ilias, (Mt. Prophet Elijah), Santorini’s highest peak at 1900 feet.

Next we visit Koutsogiannopoulos Winery for a great lunch and of course, a wine tasting!

Finally today, you’ll enjoy the prehistoric village of Akrotiri to visit the well-preserved excavations from 1600 B.C. After, we’ll return to our hotel to relax, or explore a bit more!

The morning is at leisure. This afternoon, it’s a sunset Catamaran Cruise by the magical Caldera (a volcanic cauldron). We’ll sail the sea route from Red Beach, to White Beach, to the Black Mountain and the Hot Springs. What a spectacular sunset. It’s great to be alive!

As the night falls, a sumptuous dinner is served complete with wine and dessert. Marvel at the shimmering stars in the sky and twinkling lights on the island by night!

After breakfast we transfer to the airport for our short flight back to Athens (approx. 35 min.) to connect with our flight home to the States.

When you realize all that goes into a travel experience - the hotels, transportation, tickets to various events, food, shopping and more, the Perillo Tours are more than a bargain. The interaction of the small group vacationer's makes it all worth while. Thank you to all who make it happen.

Our trip to Italy (Versuvius Tour) was an outstanding experience thanks to Daniela Senise and the Perillo Team. Daniela was an awesome tour director managing our itinerary while keeping an eye on all the details to ensure we had a great experience. I know there are others behind the scenes working on the details too and want to express my appreciation for them as well.

Fit for the gods

From the coasts of the Mediterranean to the top of Mount Olympus, Greece is a place grand enough for mythical gods and friendly enough for travelers alike. Uncover its ancient ruins and relics and take in an iconic landscape of whitewashed homes. This is only the beginning of the endless wonders you’ll find when you first set foot on Greek soil.

Destination Must-See's

Greece ms1

This is the most spectacular destination in the Mediterranean and holds the most prehistoric settlement in the region. The ancient town of Akrotiri was once destroyed and consequently preserved by a volcanic eruption around 1450 B.C. The excavation site of this city is known as the “Minoan Pompeii.” But perhaps the island’s greatest draws are its vineyards, whitewashed chapels, volcanic cliffs, and famous wines of Santorini.

Greece ms2

Known as the “whitewashed jewel of the Cyclades islands” or the “Island of the Winds,” it is said that the island was formed from the petrified bodies of giants killed by Hercules. It also gets its name from the grandson of Apollo - “Mykonos.” In the island’s capital town you will find the church, town hall, castle, the Archaeological, Folklore, and Maritime Museums, and a shopper’s paradise – Matoyianni Street.

Greece ms3

Athens is the capital city of Greece and the historical capital of Europe. It is home to many celebrated ancient monuments including the imposing Acropolis, the ruins of the Temple of Zeus, the Royal Palace, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Olympic Stadium, and Hadrian’s Gate – the symbolic entrance to the city. It also has the charming Plaka neighborhood which has been without interruption since antiquity.

Greece ms4

One of the most well-known tourist destinations in Greece, Olympia is located in the western Peloponnese, known as the “Valley of the Gods.” Surrounded by beautiful scenery from the Arcadian Mountains, it is home of the first Olympic Games that were held in 776 B.C. You can walk through the ruins of the ancient Olympic stadium, witness amazing sculptures at the museum, or even attend one of the many festivals held throughout the year.

Destination Must-Do's

Greece md1

Meteora Monastery:

Over 600 years ago Byzantine monks chose to build their monastic community atop limestone rock “towers” that extend nearly 900 feet into the air, making them virtually inaccessible. It is one of the greatest monuments in the world, and is the most important monastic center in Greece. You can climb these rocks and travel the paths hidden behind the massive rocks.

Greece md2

Delphi ruins:

Delphi was regarded as the center of the world and had the most famous oracle of ancient Greece. The site includes two sanctuaries dedicated to Apollo and Athena, and other buildings that were mostly intended for sports. The earliest finds in Delphi date back to 4000 B.C. from the Korykeion Andron, a cave where the first rituals took place. The ruins are filled with an enormous amount of history and beauty.

Greece md3

Greek Olive Farm:

Olives and olive oil are staples of the Mediterranean diet, and Greece is a major grower and producer of olive products. A visit to a Greek olive farm can provide a taste of Greek culture and serve as a window into everyday life in the country. Tours, tastings, meals, and cooking classes hosted at olive farms are all wonderful options on the table when venturing into Greece’s countryside.

Greece md4

Travel back in time with a visit to Athens’s old city – the Plaka. The hilly cobblestone streets are lined with historic buildings housing small shops, sidewalk cafes and family-owned restaurants making this neighborhood Athens’ crowned jewel. The neighborhood comes alive at night. The alleyways fill with music and dancing and locals and visitors alike dine on their favorite traditional dishes.

Expert Advice

diana

Getting around is easier than you would expect. Greeks can speak English enough to assist travelers, and street signs are in both Greek and English.

Greece e2

Much of your trip may focus on the ancient past yet I suggest you also take time to explore the vibrant traditions that still live in today’s Greek culture.

Greece e3

Greece is a welcoming destination year-round. Consider visiting October through May to beat the summer bustle, and with Greece’s 250+ days of sunshine in an average year, don’t forget your sunglasses.

Why should you book a vacation package to Greece?

If you intend to visit in the near future, it's well worth considering Greece vacation packages. By booking hotels, flights and vehicle rentals together, you can make seeing the Acropolis or relaxing on secluded island beaches much cheaper.

And with a little extra cash, you can stock up on retsina or Greek pottery, add an extra round of golf to your schedule or splash out on gourmet meals. So why not explore our Greece travel deals?

When should you book a vacation package to Greece?

During the peak summer months, Greece becomes one of the busiest tourist destinations in the world, with over 22 million arrivals every year. So if you want to find a budget Greece package vacation, try to avoid the period between June and September.

Instead, it makes sense to aim for late spring or the fall. April and June should ensure fine weather, and October is warm as well. And with mild winter temperatures an Athens sightseeing break in December or January can also be very enjoyable.

Where should you stay in Greece during your vacation?

For any vacation type in greece:.

Rhodes' Cathrin Hotel is a great candidate for anyone's vacation accommodation. Situated on Faliraki's main street, it's 9 minutes walk from the beach and boasts gyms, pools and plenty of parking. Taxis from Rhodes Airport take just 18 minutes to get there, too.

If you need a solid all-rounder in Athens, the Athens Marriott fits the bill. Located near the port, you can get into town easily but also escape to the islands if the weather is too warm. It's around 40 minutes by road from Athens International Airport.

For family vacations in Greece:

Situated on Corfu, the Aquis Pelekas Beach Hotel is perfect for families who need access to a pristine beach, and also offers a lively kids' club. Shuttle bus or road transfers from the airport take around 25 minutes.

The Mirabelle Hotel on Zakynthos is more like a mini-Greek village than a standard hotel, but comes with child-friendly pools and large gardens that kids will love. It's also just a couple of miles from Zakynthos Airport.

For romantic vacations in Greece:

With private bungalows and beautiful views, the Dessolle Mirabello vacation village in Agios Nikolaos is one of Crete's most romantic refuges, with great hiking and plenty to do on site. It's around 90 minutes' drive from Heraklion airport.

Close to the Acropolis and the quaint Plaka neighborhood, the Acropolis Select is a stylish spot with comfort to spare (and free drinks for all arrivals). Traveling from the airport is simple, as Syngrou-Fix metro station is 200 meters away.

For luxury vacations in Greece:

Built in a lavish ancient Greek style, Tharroe of Mykonos commands gorgeous sea views, has great access to the island's old town, and is only 2 miles from Mykonos Airport.

The Apostolata Island Resort on Kefalonia is a luxury spa retreat built onto a steep hillside on the island's southern coast. If you want total relaxation, nowhere comes close. Taxis from the airport should take about 30 minutes.

For budget vacations in Greece:

If you want an affordable break on the island of Rhodes, Kalithea Sun & Sky is ideal. Set in an attractive pine forest, it's just a few hundred meters from the sea, and the airport is only 15 miles away.

Affordable and comfortable, the Amazones Villas in Malia place vacationers in one of Crete's liveliest resorts, but are set aside from the center of town, so peace and quiet is assured. Shuttles run from Heraklion to Malia and the transfer won't take over an hour.

I s a vacation to the Greek Islands on your bucket list? I always knew the Greek Islands were expensive but until I started researching our trip to Greece costs, I didn’t realize quite how pricey a vacation to Greece can be.

After spending 10 days in Greece for our special anniversary trip, we have a great handle on what you will need to save for your Greek Islands travel budget (hint: it depends on which island you visit!)

The Greek Islands have never been a budget destination, but these days if you want to go the luxury route for a special occasion trip (like our 20th-anniversary trip!), it is downright expensive. So before you pull the trigger and book a Greek vacation, make sure you figure out your own Greece trip cost.

In this Greece travel budget, I’ve broken down your estimated expenses including airfare, intracountry transportation, accommodations, food, and activities. Given four-star level accommodations, a total Greece vacation budget when visiting Greece in the summer for a total of 12 nights for two adults would be $9,710 , or about $405 per person, per day . But read on for a detailed breakdown and how you can save money on your trip.

How to Plan Your Trip to Greece

Planning a trip to Greece can get complicated. Coming from the USA, it is easiest to fly directly into Athens, but then if you are visiting the Greek Islands, you need to figure out how to get to the various islands.

You can also fly into one island and out of another, but you will need to connect somewhere in Europe, and depending on the day you leave, there can also be long layovers. And, you still need to worry about getting ferry tickets or flights from place to place. Plus ferry tickets can book up early so you need to plan in advance.

WHere in Greece do you Want to go?

Your first step in planning your Greek Islands vacation is to choose your destinations and figure out how long you want to spend in each location. Are you mostly interested in archeological sites and learning about the Ancient Greeks? Or do you want to relax by the beach for most of your holiday in Greece?

Which islands you choose makes a difference too. Santorini and Mykonos are notoriously expensive. Santorini is popular with couples and Mykonos is known as a party island.

Lesser visited islands like Naxos are much less expensive and family-friendly, but some may not have as much tourist infrastructure built out. Other islands like Crete are so large you need a week or more just for one island.

WHen do you Want to Travel?

Will you travel in the high season and deal with the crowds, or opt for the less crowded shoulder seasons? Or maybe you want to save money and visit the mainland during the low season and potentially navigate closures, cooler weather, and limited services on the islands?

All of these factors make calculating what a trip to Greece costs a challenge. But to make your budgeting job a little easier, I’ve put together a sample travel budget for your reference.

Greece Budget Assumptions

Our trip was a splurge vacation to celebrate a milestone birthday and anniversary, but I’ve based this budget on a more moderate trip. I’ve tried to provide some comparisons if you are looking to upgrade to luxury properties.

For simplicity, I’ve also used U.S. dollars and typically use xe.com to get up-to-date currency conversion rates. Luckily right now the U.S. dollar is strong against the Euro so, for Americans, your money goes further.

In order to determine what a trip to Greece costs, I’ve based this Greece travel budget on the following assumptions:

  • Pricing for two adults
  • Traveling from a major airport hub on the east coast of the United States (e.g. JFK)
  • Travel during the summer
  • A trip of 12 nights
  • Stops in Athens, Mykonos, Santorini, and Crete — these popular destinations were chosen as they might typically be included in a Greek vacation package

To create your budget and a general idea of how much it costs to go to Greece, I’ve included the following:

  • Approximate price of flights (both international and in-country)
  • The average cost of a hotel in Athens and in popular island destinations
  • Transportation costs to get around Greece
  • How much money to set aside for special experiences, like a day trip from Athens or a sunset cruise around Santorini

Keep in mind that if you are traveling on a tight budget, a great way to reduce costs is to stick to the mainland and shorten your trip. You can also choose to visit some of the less expensive islands, like Naxos , Paros, and others. By making those adjustments, you can easily cut the cost of your accommodations practically in half.

The costs in this post have been organized by airfare, accommodation, transportation, food, and activities. As I mentioned, I included some of our actual costs as a comparison.

Airfare to Greece

One of the reasons that airfare eats up a lot of money when budgeting for a trip to Greece is that there are a limited number of direct flights from the U.S. to Athens, and even fewer in the off-season and shoulder seasons.

If you don’t live near one of a handful of airports, you’ll have to connect elsewhere in the U.S. or Europe before arriving in Athens, and likely pay even more to do so. For daily direct service to and from Athens in July and August (peak season), the main options at present are American Airlines from Philadelphia, Delta from Boston, JFK, and Atlanta, and Emirates and United from Newark.

Average flight prices during this time of year are $1,000 per person . Prices go up the closer you get to summer so book early if you are visiting Greece in the summer!

If $1,000 per person for the international flight is beyond reach, be aware that the price typically drops to $500-900 in the low and shoulder seasons (fall, winter, and early spring). However, some resorts on the islands won’t be open from November – April, and some ferry services will not operate on a daily schedule, so it will take some finesse in planning to still see everything you’d like to see.

Given the high cost of airfare, it would be a good time to save your credit card points or airline miles for this trip or consider flying a budget airline that connects somewhere in Europe. I also highly recommend signing up for a membership to  Going  to get alerts on flight deals and set up preferences for your dream destinations.

If you want to find the best way to accumulate points and miles through credit card spending and sign up bonuses, I’d suggest downloading the  Travel Freely app  to track your credit cards and learn how to earn points.

Intra-Island Flights

Most people traveling to Greece and venturing beyond Athens will end up on another flight at some point, especially if they wish to visit Crete. The quickest ferry from Crete to Athens is 7 hours.

If you are planning on primarily visiting the Greek Islands, pay attention to your flight times. I’ve found that it can be hard to get into Athens early enough to catch a ferry to Santorini or Mykonos on the same day if you are connecting in Europe. This will force you to spend a night in Athens despite your plans. If Athens isn’t a priority, you may want to fly directly to one of the island airports.

The same will be true on the return trip. Depending on how far the island is away from Athens, it may be a challenge to get back to Athens in time for your flight. Especially considering that Greek ferries don’t exactly have a reputation for running on time. That may not be a risk you want to take.

Therefore you may need to return to Athens the night before your flight unless you book a multi-city flight and return from a different island. I also found that some return flights from Athens have exceedingly long layovers on certain days of the week so this is another thing to keep an eye on when you are booking your flights.

The cost for a one-way short flight between Athens and Crete is less than $100 per person (usually $50-75) so this typically makes the most sense for that particular journey.

For this post, I assumed visitors would spend $1,000 per person to get to and from Athens from the U.S., and then another $150 total on a one-way domestic flight back to Athens from Crete.

Total airfare cost: $2,150

Accommodations Costs in Greece

In order to estimate accommodation costs, I allocated two nights in Athens at the start of the trip, two nights in Mykonos, two nights in romantic Santorini, five nights in Crete, and then a final night back in Athens before your return journey back to the United States.

If you don’t have two weeks to enjoy Greece, or you need to cut costs, there are many ways to adjust this itinerary. For example, if the beach isn’t a big priority, you could skip Crete or opt for a few days on the island of Naxos or Paros instead of Crete (they are much closer to Athens and much cheaper than Santorini or Mykonos).

Alternatively, if spending time on the beach and enjoying views of the Aegean Sea is your top priority when planning your trip, then consider simplifying your itinerary by only visiting Athens plus one of the islands in Greece, instead of spending time island hopping around to different locations.

In Athens, expect to pay $500-700 or more per night for a room at a 5-star property in the summer such as the Hotel Grand Bretagne . Pro tip: we used Marriott Bonvoy points to book a night at the Hotel Grand Bretagne.

More basic 4-star accommodation is around $200-450 per night. VRBO options or budget hotels often price out under $140 per night but do choose neighborhoods carefully to ensure you are in a safe area convenient for sightseeing.

Mykonos is one of the most expensive destinations in Greece, especially when it comes to accommodation. Five-star properties are easily $1,000 or more per night in the summer.

Four-star hotels are around $300-600 per night. When we were planning to do one night in Mykonos, I found a bit of a “deal” at the Nissaki Mykonos for 420 per night. Anything below 400 euros will likely be a huge sacrifice in quality and amenities (like a pool) or in location. But that isn’t to say that there aren’t budget properties available.

In Santorini, 5-star hotels such as the Canaves Oia start around $1200 or more per night in the summer. And those gorgeous suites with personal plunge pools or jacuzzis? You could potentially spend $2,000 a night. The town of Oia is the most expensive (but offers the stunning sunsets and blue-domed churches you’ve likely come here to see).

We went with the slightly more affordable property of the Canaves chain, the Canaves Oia Epitome , and the honeymoon suite with the plunge pool was a mere $1,200 a night. It feels insane to spend that much on a hotel room but as I said, this trip was a splurge celebration for us. You can find upscale boutique hotels for less, such as the Vedema Resort , where you may be able to find a room for under $500.

Fira is where the ferry port is located and is a bit cheaper, with easy access to Oia by bus or taxi. A 4-star hotel in Fira such as the Aria Suites will be around $400-500 in the summer.

Even a very basic 3-star hotel in Fira is $300+ per night during peak season. Again, Airbnb/VRBO can offer much cheaper options, but many require a three-night stay minimum, so it may require some itinerary adjustment. If you are booking a vrbo in Santorini , be sure to look carefully at their cancellation policy and any additional cleaning or service fees they may tack on.

Crete is the largest Greek island, and it offers a lovely balance of beautiful beaches plus historically and culturally interesting sites. It also has a well-developed tourism infrastructure and plenty of family-friendly resorts to choose from.

These are all reasons Crete works so well as a home base for a lengthier stay during a trip to Greece. Families can expect to pay $200-500 per night in summer for a 4-star resort or boutique hotel on or near the beach such as the Ammos Hotel or Porto Elounda Deluxe Resort .

For a higher-end luxury option, 5-star properties such as the Daios Cove Resort run $500-700 in July and August.

One cost-saving tip is to be aware of affiliations with U.S. chains like Marriott and Hilton. Many Greek hotels and resorts are affiliated with these brands, so guests can earn a lot of points or use existing points they may already have.

As I mentioned before, you could also skip Crete and choose a closer island in the Cyclades and stay on Naxos or Paros. We didn’t have quite as much time so we opted for five nights on Naxos at the Virtu Suites . We got a deluxe sea view suite for just about $700 per night.

To calculate approximate accommodation costs, we assumed booking at 4-star properties in each location, so a $400 average nightly rate was used. You can obviously bring costs down considerably if you book an Airbnb for certain portions of the trip (or the entire trip), or redeem some hotel points for part of your stay. Costs increase dramatically if you opt for a 5-star experience, paying upwards of $1,000 per night in some locations.

Total Accommodation Cost: $4,800 for 12 nights

Transportation Costs within Greece

The most efficient route for getting to these four locations is to take the ferry from Athens to Mykonos, then a ferry from Mykonos to Santorini, and a final ferry from Santorini to Crete. Most people would then fly back to Athens from Crete for their return flight to the U.S., but an overnight ferry is an option for that particular journey.

The cost of the ferry and the flight are similar. You can use FerryHopper to check rates and schedules for the various ferry lines and book tickets online.

Each of the ferry journeys outlined above is between two-to-three hours and ferry tickets cost around $20-90 each (depending on if you take a fast ferry or not.) You can save a little if you travel on slower ferries or not at peak times, but it’s usually not significant. You can also choose first-class tickets or VIP tickets with priority boarding and seating, but that will cost a bit more.

Keep in mind when planning your trip that you will need to book ferries at least a couple of months in advance as they do sell out and you don’t want to end up stuck without a way to get from island to island.

For those who choose to travel to the typical destinations in Greece (Athens, Santorini, Mykonos, and Crete, for example, as outlined in this post), then a car rental isn’t necessary. Hotels can arrange transfers or I used Welcome Pickups to schedule transfers to/from the port in many destinations and it worked perfectly every time and we were relieved to not have to wait in a long taxi line.

If you want to do some off-the-beaten-path exploration, the cost of a private driver in Greece is typically $200-400 per day. On some of the islands, you can also rent an ATV to explore, but locals strongly advise against ATVs as they see many fatal accidents each year. On our trip, we just took taxis, a hotel shuttle, or booked private tours that helped us explore more of the islands.

For budgeting purposes, let’s assume three ferry services at $90 per person per ride, plus one day of a private driver service or day trip at $200, and an additional $200 for public transport and taxi fares. For a two-week trip, this is actually quite affordable. Opting to stay in the center of walkable cities and full-service beach resorts is key to this cost savings.

Total Car Rental/Transportation Cost: $940

Food Costs in Greece

If you’re suffering from sticker shock after reading about the cost of flights and accommodations, you’ll be pleased to learn that Greece is one of the more affordable European countries as far as food and dining out. First, breakfast is included at most hotels and resorts (but do confirm that before booking.) If not, expect to pay less than $5 per person for coffee and a pastry at a cafe each morning.

The key to saving money on Greek food is to eat at local establishments (and you probably came for the fresh seafood and local food anyway) or try some street food. A large lunch at a taverna is usually $10-15 per person, or you can just grab fast food sandwiches or a light bite and feta cheese from bakeries or cafes to enjoy a picnic on the beach or between sightseeing adventures.

A hearty sandwich or cheap gyros will be less than $5 from local shops or stands. For dinner, expect to only pay about $15-20 per person for a multi-course dinner at local restaurants. Of course, this all goes out the window if you are dining at a luxury hotel or trying a degustation menu (in Santorini an experience like that with wine pairing can run you $500+ for two!)

A few budget busters in Greece, however, are cocktails or imported wine. Best to stick to beer or house wine if you don’t want to spend a lot of money on drinks.

We assumed couples would spend per day on $20 lunch and $40 per day on dinner, but again, you could easily spend less if you didn’t sit down for a full-service meal for both each day. I’ve also budgeted for one fine dining dinner at an additional $100.

Total Food Cost: $820

Tours and Activities Costs in Greece

Another cost-saving perk of a trip to Greece is that much of what you came to see is free, like a day spent enjoying one of the spectacular beaches or wandering the beautiful side streets and alleys of Santorini. That said, you’ll definitely want to budget for a few memorable activities.

A tour of Athens is a must, in my opinion, especially for history buffs. These can be chosen to match your interests or needs, like a general walking tour as a way of getting oriented on your first day, or to dig deep and learn more about important archaeological sites like the Acropolis, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site, or even just a food tour . Prices for a half-day tour in Athens are around $97 per person.

An Athens sightseeing pass while in Athens might also make sense if you want to visit attractions like the Acropolis Museum, as most of the landmark historical sites do charge admission. A pass usually results in cost savings for those who plan to see several of the included sites. The price is around $40 per adult.

A sunset cruise while in Santorini, Mykonos, or Crete is usually a highlight for visitors to Greece as well. Done as a small group, it’s usually around $200 for a couple, which sometimes includes a meal or drinks. Done privately, expect to pay around $500-1,000 or more.

Also on Crete, many visitors enjoy a guided tour of the Palace of Knossos or perhaps olive oil tasting. Again, expect to pay $200-300 for a small group experience or $500+ for a private excursion. There are also some food tours or wine tours on Santorini and Naxos that can make for a fun afternoon. We did a half-day wine-tasting tour in Santorini for around $350 and a full-day food, wine, and island tour on Naxos for closer to $800.

For this Greece trip budget, I estimated $1,000, based on three tours or excursions.

Total Activity Cost: $1,000

Total Greece Trip Budget

Given these parameters, a total Greece vacation budget when visiting Greece in the summer for a total of 12 nights for two adults would be $9,710 . However, if you can find a way to use miles or points for airfare or hotels, a trip to Greece can actually be pretty inexpensive.

If spending nearly $10,000 on a two-week trip is beyond your reach, just know that there are more affordable ways to visit Greece. If you have the flexibility to travel from April through June, for example, you may find flight prices and accommodation costs to be significantly less (and even better, fewer crowds!)

Also, choosing home rentals through online booking sites is often half the cost of a hotel stay, especially if you are willing to forego amenities like a pool. Or, opt to visit less popular islands or locations, instead of pricey destinations like Mykonos and Santorini.

Don’t forget to also budget for travel insurance for a trip to Greece!

Solar eclipse maps show 2024 totality path, peak times and how much of the eclipse people could see across the U.S.

By Aliza Chasan

Updated on: April 9, 2024 / 5:00 AM EDT / CBS News

A total solar eclipse  crossed North America Monday with parts of 15 U.S. states within the path of totality. Maps show  where and when astronomy fans could see the big event  as skies darkened in the middle of the day Monday, April 8.

The total eclipse first appeared along Mexico's Pacific Coast at around 11:07 a.m. PDT, then traveled across a swath of the U.S., from Texas to Maine, and into Canada.

About 31.6 million people live in the path of totality , the area where the moon fully blocked out the sun , according to NASA. The path ranged between 108 and 122 miles wide. An additional 150 million people live within 200 miles of the path of totality.

United states map showing the path of the 2024 solar eclipse and specific regions of what the eclipse duration will be.

The total solar eclipse started over the Pacific Ocean, and the first location in continental North America that experienced totality was Mexico's Pacific Coast, around 11:07 a.m. PDT, according to NASA. From there, the path continued into Texas, crossing more than a dozen states before the eclipse enters Canada in southern Ontario. The eclipse exited continental North America at around 5:16 p.m. NDT from Newfoundland, Canada.

The path of totality included portions of the following states:

  • Pennsylvania
  • New Hampshire

Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan also experienced the total solar eclipse.

Several major cities across the U.S. were included in the eclipse's path of totality, while many others saw a partial eclipse. These were some of the best major cities for eclipse viewing — though the weather was a factor :

  • San Antonio, Texas (partially under the path)
  • Austin, Texas
  • Waco, Texas
  • Dallas, Texas
  • Little Rock, Arkansas
  • Indianapolis, Indiana
  • Dayton, Ohio
  • Cleveland, Ohio
  • Buffalo, New York
  • Rochester, New York
  • Syracuse, New York
  • Burlington, Vermont

Map of when the solar eclipse reached totality across its path

The eclipse began in the U.S. as a partial eclipse beginning at 12:06 p.m. CDT near Eagle Pass, Texas, before progressing to totality by about 1:27 p.m. CDT and then moving along its path to the northeast over the following few hours.

Eclipse map of totality

NASA shared times for several cities in the path of totality across the U.S. People could have also  checked their ZIP code on NASA's map  to see when the eclipse was to reach them if they were on, or near, the path of totality — or if they saw a partial eclipse instead.

How much of the eclipse did people see if they live outside the totality path?

While the April 8 eclipse covered a wide swath of the U.S., outside the path of totality observers may have spotted a partial eclipse, where the moon covers some, but not all, of the sun, according to NASA. The closer they were to the path of totality, the larger the portion of the sun that was hidden.

NASA allowed viewers to input a ZIP code and see how much of the sun was to be covered in their locations.

Could there be cloud cover be during the solar eclipse?

Some areas along the path of totality had a higher likelihood of cloud cover that could interfere with viewing the eclipse. Here is a map showing the historical trends in cloud cover this time of year.

You could have checked the latest forecast for your location with our partners at The Weather Channel .

United States map showing the percent of cloud cover in various regions of the eclipse path on April 8. The lakeshore region will be primarily affected.

Where did the solar eclipse reach totality for the longest?

Eclipse viewers near Torreón, Mexico, got to experience totality for the longest. Totality there lasted 4 minutes, 28 seconds, according to NASA.

Most places along the centerline of the path of totality saw a totality duration of between 3.5 and 4 minutes, according to NASA. Some places in the U.S. came close to the maximum; Kerrville, Texas, had a totality duration of 4 minutes, 24 seconds.

What is the path of totality for the 2044 solar eclipse?

The next total solar eclipse that will be visible from the contiguous U.S. will be on Aug. 23, 2044.

Astronomy fans in the U.S. will have far fewer opportunities to see the 2044 eclipse they had on April 8. NASA has not yet made maps available for the 2044 eclipse but, according to The Planetary Society , the path of totality will only touch three states.

The 2024 eclipse will start in Greenland, pass over Canada and end as the sun sets in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota, according to the Planetary Society.
