Overview of 2 days 1 night.

Halong bay is one of the most selected destinations for every traveler coming to Vietnam and to the northern region in specific. Some choose to spend a few hours while many want to stay for a few nights to see as much of what the bay has to offer. Among these itineraries, 2-day-1-night cruising is the most popular and favorite option.

halong cruise 1 night

A 2D1N cruise means almost 24 hours on the bay. It is explained by the embarkation time at 12:00 pm and disembarkation time at around 11:00 am the next day of all overnight cruises. This itinerary provides a series of activities on and off the boat and the enchanting beauty of Halong Bay at different times of the day. Some may think that with just a short timeframe, it is challenging to explore the  bay's entire magnificent landscape. However, a wisely arranged time and itinerary will surely provide you with very enjoyable experiences for a fun-filled cruise vacation.

Once arriving at the cruise port, you will be assisted with luggage check-in by the cruise operator. Then, the crew member will escort you to embark the boat. A refreshing welcome drink and safety briefing is usually given before you check in your cabin and enjoy lunch. During lunch, the cruise sails to the bay and proceeds to the first attraction.

halong cruise 1 night

In the afternoon, you are transferred to the first attraction by a small boat (tender). It could be a cave full of beautiful stalactites and stalagmites, an island with a sandy beach and panoramic view, or a cave submerged half by water and visited by a kayak. Some of the highlights are Surprise cave , Luon cave , Titop island , Dark-Bright cave , Tra Bau area, Ao Ech area, etc.

After the excursion, you can join a number of activities onboard or spend free time relaxing on the top deck with the perfect sunset view. After dinner, you'll have the option to engage in squid fishing, catch a movie, savor beverages from the bar, or unwind in the cabin.

halong cruise 1 night

Cruises may offer a Taichi or Yoga session on the sundeck where you can soak up the fresh air and release the tiredness in your body and mind. You later enjoy a light breakfast while the ship cruises to the next attraction. Afterwards, you have time to freshen up and pack your luggage, check out your cabin, settle the bill (if any), and back to the dining area to savor a hearty breakfast. The trip ends at around 11:00 am.

Pros and cons

Although cruising for 2 days and 1 night brings plenty of merits, some demerits cannot be denied.

halong cruise 1 night

Reasonable duration

Normally, you come from other locations and commuting back and forth to both destinations can consume several hours. Thus, a day cruise cruise feels hurried, leaving no room for relaxation. Conversely, a more extended two-night cruise excursion appears to strike the right balance, making it a safe and suitable choice for most travelers.

Affordable price

Obviously, overnight cruises cost more than day cruises and 1-night cruises cost less than 2-or-more night cruises. However, compared with the time you spend to travel from nearby regions to the bay, a 1-night itinerary is more valued for money.

In fact, Halong Bay cruises are classified into different levels such as cost-saving cruises (3-star), middle-level cruises (4-star), and upscale cruises (5-star). Hence, you completely can find a budget option with a bit higher price than a day cruise to have 24 hours on the bay full of activities.

Varied activities and excursions

The longer you stay on the bay, the more activities and excursions you can join. Yet, a 2-day trip fully offers you typical activities including kayaking, swimming, relaxing on the rowing boat, hiking to the mountain, watching the bay at dawn and dusk, and more . Better still, onboard activities such as cooking class, Taichi, sunset party, Happy Hour, and squid fishing are only offered on overnight cruises but not day cruises.

halong cruise 1 night

Just 24 hours on the bay

2 days but not actually 2 days! This itinerary includes nearly 24 hours since the cruise departs daily and has to come back to the harbor to pick up new passengers. As a consequence, some may find it still short and do not have much time to rest among activities.

Crowded attractions

In comparison to the high daily volume of ships, the available travel routes are relatively limited. Consequently, it's almost inevitable that a significant influx of tourists will be visiting the attractions simultaneously. The less frequented routes are especially integrated into longer itineraries spanning 2 nights or more, allowing you to access more remote areas of the bay on smaller boats.

Questions and Answers (6)

Hello, my family of 3, husband n 10 year old girl thinking of doing a 2d1n cruise to Halong Bay on 6 or 7 dec. May I know which is a suitable cruise for us?

@Lindy, You can consider cruises for families with more facilities onboard such as Capella, Heritage Binh Chuan, Stellar of the Seas, Elite of the Seas, Catherine Cruise, Genesis Luxury Regal Cruise, etc. These cruises are top luxury cruises with spacious rooms, so it is more comfortable to add one extra bed for your girl. You can also make use of modern facilities on these cruises such as outdoor pool, mini golf, spa, fitness center, poker room, karaoke, etc.

Good morning, We are two friends from Spain currently living in Thailand. We will be in Hanoi for four days and we wanted to visit Ha long bay. Our concern is not to fall into the mass tourism, cruises that do not respect the environment and local community, but we are also on a budget. We were wondering if there were any possibilities of doing one. night and two-day trip to Ha long bay from Hanoi that meets this criteria. Thank you very much in advance, Best, Laura.

@Laura, For budget cruises, we have some options such as Swan Cruise, Renea Cruise for Bai Tu Long Bay and Sapphire and Alova Cruise for Lan Ha Bay. These bays are less touristy and include pristine attractions. The price ranges from $130 - 140/pax for a 2 days/1 night tour (excluding transfer). Regards,

We are intending to book a 2D1N cruise for the 3 of u on 26 Jan 2024. We are 3 friends travelling together. One of my friend is pregnant. Can you recommend which is the most luxurious and comfortable cruise ship? Preferably one with a bigger room and 3 beds.

@Jennifer, Per your requests, you can choose luxurious cruises with triple cabins such as Essence Grand, Scarlet Pearl, Orchid Classic, Mon Cheri Cruise, etc. Although all the activities are optional and you can choose to relax all the time onboard, we advise your friend to consult her doctor before the trip to make sure her health is eligible for the trip. Regards,

Frequently asked questions

1. how many attractions does a 2-day itinerary include.

Depending on each cruise, the itinerary may include 2 to 3 attractions. On day 1, there are 1 or 2 attractions in the afternoon excursion while on day 2, there is only 1 attraction in the morning excursion.

2. Does the boat cruise all the time during the trip?

No. The boat cruises through the bay and drops the anchor at the attractions for a visit and at the sleeping area at night. Boats are not allowed to operate during night time for safety reasons.

3. What is included in a night trip?

Inclusions and exclusions are specified depending on each cruise’s policy. Generally, a 2-day journey includes the following:

  • 2-day-1-night itinerary and program
  • Cabins with air-con and private bathroom
  • Welcome drink
  • Entrance and sightseeing fees
  • Inhouse English-speaking tour guide
  • 4 Meals on board: 1 lunch, 1 dinner, 1 light breakfast, 1 breakfast
  • Activities mentioned in the program such as kayak, fishing equipment, sampan boat.
  • Onboard insurance

4. Is 2-day or day cruise better?

A 2-day cruise gives you more time to relax and enjoy nature as you have 24 hours onboard. There are a lot of activities and you can admire the bay from day to night. In contrast, a day cruise offers fewer activities but costs less and is suitable for those who have limited time yet want to have a glimpse of Halong Bay. Each type has its own pros and cons so the answer depends on your preference.

5. Do I stay overnight on the ship or in the hotel on the shore?

For a 2D1N itinerary, you will stay overnight on the ship. You embark on the boat at noon time (12:00-13:00) and disembark at a similar time (10:30-12:00).

Halong Bay Cruise 1 Night Itineraries | Best Advice + Cruise Tips

March 28, 2024 December 5, 2023

A Halong Bay overnight cruise is one of the best options for any traveler looking to take in the beauty of the most iconic natural landmark in Northern Vietnam. Spending one night and two days on a cruise ship is just enough time to explore the best parts of Halong Bay. Combine that with once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to visit local fishing village communities and discover hidden caves, and you’ve got an experience in Southeast Asia you’ll never forget.

But, if you feel like you need more time, there are also 3 days 2 nights itineraries that visit every single Halong location from Vung Vieng Fishing Village to Thien Canh Son Cave and many more.

Table of Contents

Exploring the marvels of halong bay & surrounding areas.

Tourists taking a trip to Vietnam are sure to have heard of Halong Bay and may have also heard about its lesser-known but equally as beautiful neighbors , Lan Ha Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay.

Situated in the northeast of Quang Ninh province, all three sites are marvels of nature. Thousands of untouched limestone karst formations and isles dot the bay in various shapes and sizes. Halong is true to its literal translation, the place where “The Dragon Descends to the Sea.”

Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site in the years 1994 and 2000 , the popularity of the area has never waned. Large numbers of tourists visit Halong Bay every year, and there’s no better way of marveling at the seascape than an overnight cruise.

In this article, you’ll learn about the different options for your Halong Bay overnight cruises. From the specific cruise ships you can book on to what you can expect from each, all the information you need is here!

What should you be aware of?

Which bay to choose for your 1-night cruise.

Though Halong Bay is by far the most well-known and popular option for an overnight cruise, Lan Ha Bay in the northeast, Bai Tu Long Bay in the east, and Cat Ba Island in the south are three other options well worth considering.

Need help picking the right bay? Learn about the 3 bays in the area !

Halong Bay caves

The area around Halong is famous for its stunning caves. Just a few of the most popular include Thien Canh Son Cave, Sung Sot Cave, Luon Cave, and Trong Cave.

Although most of the caves (especially Sung Sot Cave) are cavernous and offer a lot of wide open space, you may want to stick to open-air activities if you get claustrophobic exploring caves.

Luckily, we’re extremely flexible at Halong Hub and we’re happy to modify the itineraries of specific guests if they request it.

Halong Bay weather

Weather can make or break your trip! Halong Bay shares the same weather as most of northern Vietnam, with four distinctive seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter.

The choice is yours, but it’s crucial to understand what to expect as a result of your travel date. For example, a trip in the winter will be colder and drier. As such, water activities like kayaking and snorkeling won’t be ideal, but that means you’ll have more of a chance to hike and visit floating village communities. Similar constraints and opportunities hold true for every season, so research year-round weather in Halong Bay to find what season would be best for you!

One final point to remember has to do with monsoons. Vietnam is a tropical country with a climate that’s prone to monsoons, and this will affect your trip if you’re not careful. The most common time for monsoons is during the winter, between October and April. In the worst cases, cruises can be canceled, so it’s important to be aware of this when planning your trip.

Since Long Ha Bay, Bai Tu Long Bay, and Cat Ba Island are all very close to Halong, you can consider them to have the same weather patterns as Halong Bay.

What time do Halong Bay cruises start and where?

The three common starting points for your Ha Long Bay overnight cruise are Hanoi, Hai Phong, or Tuan Chau Marina in Quang Ninh. All Ha Long Bay cruise itineraries begin around 12:00 PM, so it’s important to figure out your mode of transport beforehand.

Visitors from Hanoi tend to take a shuttle bus or private car from popular tourist spots in Hanoi like the Hanoi Old Quarter. Travel times last around four hours. On the other hand, trips from Hai Phong City or Quang Ninh are much faster, with taxi services taking between 45 minutes to an hour to get to your cruise port for check-in.

Halong Bay overnight cruise cost breakdown

The costs of each Halong Bay overnight cruise depend on the individual cruise ship, as well as when you plan on making your trip to Halong Bay. Prices during peak season are always higher! Furthermore, you need to take into account other expenses like drinks, transportation to Halong Bay, extra services, and tips.

Now you have a better understanding of what to think about before you plan your Halong Bay overnight cruise, let’s take a look at the different Halong Bay cruise 1-night itineraries.

The cost of an overnight cruise to Halong Bay can vary depending on several factors such as the cruise operator, the type of boat, the season, and the specific package you choose.

Prices typically range from $100 to $200 per person for a standard two-day, one-night cruise. However, luxury cruises with more amenities and activities may cost more.

It’s best to check with different cruise operators or travel agencies to get accurate pricing for your preferred cruise option.

Mysterious waters and myriads of islets and limestone formations create the spectacular seascapes of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Halong, which means “descending dragon”, refers to legendary creatures sent down from the heavens to guard against invaders approaching from the sea. To protect the Vietnamese, the dragons belched out clusters of jewels to create an impenetrable barrier, which has since turned into over 2,000 beautiful limestone islets today dotting the bay.

This classic two-day/one-night cruise named “ The Dragon Passage ” along the “ancient playground of dragons” offers memorable sights and sounds captured in an unforgettable journey through thousands of limestone formations.

  • Rates & Departures

Embark on an enchanting Halong Bay journey as you acquaint yourself with the amenities on board our vessel. Witness the breath-taking scenery from the sun deck during our initial hours of cruising. Our first destination is Cua Van, a floating fishing villages in Halong Bay, which some fishermen still use as a base for their fishing and aquacultural activities. Glide through this serene area in a small bamboo boat rowed by locals, offering a glimpse into the village and understand how once whole families use to life on water here. For the more active ones, take a kayak and paddle around the floating hamlet for a very personal exploration (complimentary). Next, we transfer by tender to Tien Ong cave, providing evidence of human civilization dating back to 10,000 – 8,000 BC. This small cave provides some fascinating understandings of Halong Bay's geological history. Returning to the ship, we sail to the overnight mooring area, where the "blue hour" unveils Halong Bay's magical beauty. Relax on the sun deck with your favourite drink, absorbing the tranquil moment. Engage in a cooking class with our chef, practicing classic Vietnamese recipes to impress your loved ones at home later. As evening descends, a multi-course à la carte dinner is served. If you like, join in later for an on-board presentation about the bay's unique features and secrets. Alternatively, try your hand at squid fishing with our staff for a delightful and entertaining experience. Spend the rest of the evening embracing the magical landscapes in the heart of Halong Bay, where once upon a time, sparkling jewels cascaded from heavenly dragons. Meals: Lunch, Dinner

halong cruise 1 night

For early risers, tea, coffee and pastries are available in the dining room and a Tai Chi class is offered on the sun deck to awaken your mind and muscles. We set sail to the small “Ti Top Island”. Formerly named Cat Nang, the island received a name change after former president Ho Chi Minh and the second man to orbit the Earth, Russian astronaut ‘GhermanTitov’, toured Halong Bay together in 1962. Since the cosmonaut was so fascinated with this picturesque islet, Uncle Ho would rename the island to honour Mr. Titov and as a gesture of friendship between their two countries. Once arriving at Ti Top, you can go for a refreshing morning swim on a sandy beach or - if you prefer to be more active - climb 400 steps (20 min.) to the island’s top with stunning, panoramic views over the bay. Back on board, you can take a shower and freshen up. Enjoy the final moments of sailing as we head back to the harbour while breakfast is served. Relax on the sun deck or while savouring the last views of this iconic site. Meals: Breakfast

Besides exploring the best of Halong Bay, you will also sail on Lan Ha Bay, with a jaw-dropping landscape of towering karst, and it’s less crowded.

There are also other activities included with your cruises like a cooking class, squid fishing, kayaking, or a bamboo boat tour. If you’re still not convinced then you’ll get to visit a variety of beautiful islets, islands, and caves. This includes Surprise Cave which is the largest cave in Halong Bay!

This 2D/1N cruise will also take you to Ba Hang Floating Village and Ti Top Island so the itinerary is rather jam-packed. However, you’ll still have ample time to relax on the top deck, swim in the emerald waters, and enjoy the epic views.

The itinerary suggests that each night is full of activities such as cooking classes, karaoke, leisure time at the bar with your fellow passengers, and plenty of board games! Another great thing about this cruise is that you’re guaranteed an ocean-view cabin which is a huge bonus.

As well as the usual places, you’ll get to visit some more hidden gems as you’re staying on board an extra night. This includes caves, beaches, and stunning islets so what are you waiting for? Better yet, you’ll get to explore Bai Tu Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay as well.

If you’re looking for a romantic time in Halong Bay, this 2-Nights on Best Balcony Cruise is the perfect option. Ran by Halong Bay Cruise Hunters, you know you’re in for a fantastic time as this company has thousands of reviews on Tripadvisor.

For starters, this 3D/2N cruise takes you to some of the most beautiful bays in the area including Halong, Lan Ha, and Bai Tu Long. You’ll also get to choose between some other popular locations depending on your itinerary. This includes the spectacular Cat Ba Island which you’ll be able to explore by bicycle.

All meals are included with this cruise as well as a cooking class, Tai Chi lesson, and kayaking. Just keep in mind that there’s a surcharge per person if you’re cruising during the Christmas season, Chinese New Year, or New Year’s Eve. You’ll also have to pay extra if you’re fancying a massage.

5. Halong Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay (3-Day & 2-Night)

Kayak view ethical tour in Halong Bay

DAY 1: Halong International Cruise Port – Thien Canh Son Cave – Bai Tu Long Bay

DAY 2: Bai Tu Long Bay – Kayaking, Tai Chi, Swimming, & sightseeing

Day 3: Vung Vieng Fishing Village

This 3-day Bai Tu Long Bay and Halong Bay overnight cruise is a great off-the-beaten-path option. Although many of the cruises simply stay in Halong Bay, this ship will take you on a more hidden path so you’ll have a quieter experience.

All meals are included with this cruise, as well as all entrance fees and activities such as the Tai Chi lesson, cooking class, and pre-dinner cocktail party.

The one thing to note with this cruise is that there doesn’t seem to be as much included on the itinerary. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing as you’ll have plenty of time to relax, admire the views, and get involved with the onboard activities. However, if you’d prefer an action-packed itinerary where you’ll get to see a lot within a short amount of time, you might want to go for one of the other options in this guide.

Top Activities To Do In Halong Bay

There are plenty of awesome things to do in Halong Bay. Whether you’re looking to explore by kayak, spend some time swimming, or take a trip on a bamboo boat, there’s something for everyone. You’ll also get to visit a variety of incredible places so let’s take a look at what you’ll be getting up to…

1. Sailing among the majestic limestone kasks

I spent a good amount of time on the boat, sailing, taking pictures, flying the drone or just relaxing on the roof deck while enjoying some very yummy (high alcohol content) cocktails. I felt that I was really on vacation and sometimes it’s so important to slow down and enjoy the magical view, especially if you’re in Halong Bay!

Halong Bay breathtaking view

2. Boating on the floating Villages

The cruise line took us to a harbor near some small floating fishing villages. We got picked up by locals with their row boats and they took us along the bay. Each boat held 6-8 people.

We could see the beauty of the mountains very close up. It was intriguing to see the floating villages and be able to observe the families with their dogs living their normal lives in the same way, for so many generations. It was nice and relaxing, and I took many beautiful photos during the tour.

Cruise Tour

3. Visit a Pearl Farm

Halong Bay Cruises often include a visit to the area’s thriving Pearl Farm. This farm was originally opened in 1995 and owned by a Japanese company until it was sold to locals. Covering around 74 acres and home to around 3,000 cages, it’s rather impressive.

During your visit here, you’ll get to learn all about how pearl cultivation is done as it’s not a simple process. Throughout the tour, you’ll get to see the floating rafts where the pearls are grown, the processing rooms, and the showroom where you’ll see the final product.

This is one of the most interesting places to visit in Halong so try to look for a company that includes it in their itinerary. As the Peal Farm is around 15 miles (24 km) from Halong City, you’ll need to be on a 2D/1N or 3D/2N package to visit this destination.

4. Visit Caves during your Halong Bay Tour

Depending on the cruise company you choose, most likely you will visit one of several natural caves on an island (weather permitting). It’s just amazing to think that some islands are hollow and there are lovely formations inside.

If you’re lucky to have a good tour guide, they will also give you an explanation of the history of the cave and an overview of the formations. The view from the top of the cliffside was outstanding, as we could overlook the whole bay and the junk boats.

Cave tour at Halong Bay

5. Visit other islands in Halong Bay

Some overnight cruises in Halong Bay offer to visit other islands during the tour. If you want to experience more of the bays in this area, I’d recommend choosing a 3D/2N cruise as this allows you to travel a further distance.

To give you a rough idea, here are some of the other bays that are often included:

  • Cat Ba Island : Cat Ba is the largest island in Halong Bay and is famous for its wild and rugged beauty. Half of the island is located within Cat Ba National Park and other areas are relatively untouched. Although not as popular as Halong Bay, tourism is starting to increase here and many tours now include a visit to this island in the package!
  • Lan Ha Bay : This bay is located in the Gulf of Tonkin and is much less touristy compared to Halong Bay. However, it’s just as beautiful and if you can you’ll want to visit. Boasting undisturbed beaches, awesome hiking trails, and a unique ecosystem, Lan Ha Bay has a lot to offer. Some tours include a visit to both bays so I’d recommend choosing that option if possible.
  • Bai To Long : Lastly we have Bai To Long – one of the largest bays in the area. Although relatively undeveloped compared to other bays in the area, the beauty here is breathtaking. Add that to the fact that you won’t have to share this place with hordes of tourists and you’ve got a sure-fire winner. The pollution here is very low too compared to other bays in the area which is another reason to visit!

tips to be in shape for your vacation

6. Kayaking & swimming in Halong Bay

The Halong Bay cruise overnight tour I chose, offers kayaks and it was a highlight of my cruise, so I recommend taking advantage of it. They anchored the junk boat while we had the chance to explore the nearby area at our own pace. It’s an opportunity to see the limestone cliffs close up.

In some instances, you will be able to explore caves, which unfortunately didn’t happen for me in the area where our boat left us. I was able to go to different beaches and just admire the formations.

But please, make sure you are safe and that you have a good conditional kayak, you are offered a life vest, and that you are paddling your kayak in a safe area far from the big fish boats.

Kayaks - ethical way to tour Halong Bay

7. Taking a trip on a Bamboo Boat

There are plenty of kayaking opportunities on Halong Bay overnight cruises but this experience is something special. Many companies also offer you the chance to explore parts of Halong Bay via bamboo boat – a mode of transport that is often used by local fishermen.

Each bamboo boat can carry between 4-6 people and you’ll be maneuvered around the limestone caves by an expert. Although you can learn to do it yourself, it takes a lot of skill to avoid endless rock formations! As you cruise along Halong Bay you’ll also get to listen to the fisherman’s stories and connect with the locals on another level.

This may be a more suitable option for older individuals or families with small children who aren’t up for kayaking.

Halong Bay tips overnight cruises

Aside from having an action-packed itinerary off the cruise, you’ll also have a variety of awesome activities onboard. No matter your hobbies or interests, you’re guaranteed to find something to your liking.

Here are some of the activities you can expect to find on Halong cruises:

Cooking Class: The cruise line offered a “cooking class” that was basically making summer rolls. It was entertaining, but I never really used my new expertise in my own kitchen.

Fishing Squid: Every night after dinner, if you’re interested, they will provide you with fishing poles and you can catch squid. I passed on the fishing but it’s a unique experience to have and the little ones tend to love it!

Sunrise Tai Chi on the Deck: This is one thing I can definitely get behind. Not only will you get to appreciate the beauty of Halong at sunrise but this martial art has a ton of benefits. It not only helps you physically but it’s thought to have emotional and mental benefits too.

Sunroof Bar: This is something you just have to do whilst on a cruise. There’s no better place to relax than at the Sunroof Bar as you can treat yourself to a cheeky cocktail or beer whilst admiring the epic views.

Spa Massages: This activity is an extra charge but it’s a great way to wind down after the day. The Halong Bay overnight cruises can be pretty taxing as there’s so much to do, so this is a great way to relax and recharge.

Local Wine Experience: Not all cruises will offer these so it will depend on your company. If your company does offer this then fantastic as you’ll get a better understanding of the local alcohol.

Vietnamese Cultural Films: Watching these types of films may not be to everyone’s taste but they’re a great way to learn about the country’s culture.

Music Entertainment: Lastly, many cruises will play music throughout the evening which only adds to the ambiance and location. I have done a Halong Bay overnight cruise during New Year, and we had a DJ with a dancing floor. Even the boat crew joined us, and boy, these guys can dance! We had a blast!

Halong Bay Cruise Overnight Conclusion

Halong Bay is the most frequented place in Vietnam and every year millions of people visit, and for a good reason. The opportunity to sail on a junk ship through hundreds of dramatic limestone mountains sticking up from a deep turquoise sea is like nothing else!

There are so many  karst islands  and rocks rising from the water in every direction that it looks mystic. There are caves, secret lagoons, and sea gypsies so you’ll have endless places to explore.

Not only is Halong Bay beautiful, but there are plenty of awesome activities waiting for you if you opt for an overnight cruise. These will give you a chance to immerse yourself in Vietnam’s culture so the cruises really do offer a bit of everything!

Hopefully, this guide has given you a good idea of what the most popular cruise options are, and what you can expect from your trip.

Your journey takes you to Sung Sot Cave , the last destination on the schedule. The largest cavern in Halong Bay, this remarkable cave displays a surreal display of stalactites and stalagmites. These incredibly age-old formations, shaped over endless millennia, stir the imagination with intricate and mystical sculptures.

When you return to the cruise ship, a delectable premium breakfast buffet is waiting for you at Le Marin restaurant while Halong Bay Cruise retraces its route, passing by Dau Go Cave , Thien Cung Cave , and Ga Choi Islet. Feedback 1: Traveling Teo – 5 stars - 2nd time to Halong and still loving it

My second time in Ha long this time on Paradise Elegance with my buddies. Enjoyed chilling on the deck pool, soaking in the glorious sunset with martinis in hand. The food and service was exceptional. Even the organization of the tour from pickup to drop off was exceptionally smooth. Short out to Sophie who helped organize the trip and Corrrina who served us for all our meals on board…and even danced to the lovely live band.

Feedback 2: dixieredhen – 5 stars - Halong Bay Ambassador Cruise

Rosie from Ambassador Cruise  helped us to arrange our trip. She encouraged us to get our Vietnam Visa. I suggest you get your visa in hand before you book any travel to save yourself any worry. You may be denied travel or entry without the visa.

Halong Bay is a lovely experience on an overnight cruise ship. The staff of Ambassador Cruise is excellent. The food is great. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom was clean. The air-conditioning was cold.

halong cruise 1 night

We went into a giant cave that could have been the home of a few hundred people at one time. We also went by bamboo boat into a lagoon where monkeys were seen in the trees in large numbers. It was like the zoo.

We would definitely consider Ambassador Cruises for other excursions.

Feedback 3: Rosie - 6stars Essence Grand

Rosie helped me through whatsapp to book my stay on the -brand new 6 Stars mega yacht- Essence Grand . She gave a fair price and trew a little perk to my stay, which I very much enjoyed. The best part, she did not push to sell, the aggressive way some other agents do. Very smooth, professional, attentive process

Two days and one night is a time not too long to explore and experience, but the schedule with many activities arrange reasonably. You have time to experience nature, private time to relax, and discover the natural wonders of the world.

Overnight cruise on Halong Bay is a package tour, that includes transportation (usually from Hanoi to Halong Bay), comfortable rooms, meals, activities, and onboard service All the experience will be packed in a journey, for nearly 24 hours cruising on the bay.

It is a fact that you will join a two-day one-night cruise. But in fact, you are only on the boat for nearly 24 hours, lasting from noon on the first day until noon on the next day. The best time to visit Halong Bay?

Traveling on a cruise to visit Halong Bay, every season is beautiful because of its unique, exciting features. But, in my opinion, from April to October is the best time to visit Halong Bay. At this time of the summer, the sky is bright, sunny, and suitable for outdoor activities. Moreover, this is the low season with lots of promotions for travelers, and we should take advantage of this offer to have the best deals on cruise booking.

Which cruise route to take?

Currently, there are three popular cruise routes to visit Halong Bay. I will review these cruise routes to help you choose the best option. But, be sure that whatever you want, you still fully experience the natural wonder of Halong Bay.

The cruise route to visit Halong Bay center

The journey to the center of Ha Long Bay is the most popular route with famous visiting sites: Thien Cung Cave, Dau Go Cave, Stone Dog islet (Hon Cho Da), Dinh Huong Islet, Trong Mai Cave, Sung Sot Cave, Titop Island, Soi Sim Island, Me Cung Cave. This route starts from Tuan Chau International Port. Many cruise companies are operating this tour.

  • Pros : the cruise route passes through the most highlighted areas of Halong Bay, which has been the most popular cruising area on Halong Bay with many exciting experiences
  • Cons : the tourist attractions are so crowded, especially in the summer with many domestic tourists.

The cruise route to visit Bai Tu Long Bay

This journey is to visit a quieter area of Halong Bay, named Bai Tu Long Bay. It is a large area, be more silent. You will take the chance to visit Thien Canh Son Cave, Cong Do Hang Thay, and Vung Vieng Fishing Village. This journey departs from Hon Gai Port or Halong Cruise Port

The journey starts from Got Pier (Hai Phong).  The cruise tour has been put into operation in many recent years.

  • Pros: The new cruise routes, being advertised as quieter than Halong Bay center, as an alternative cruise option.
  • Cons: The area is not significant as Halong Bay so in the future when more cruising vessels operate, it could be crowded.

Cruising boats in Bai Tu Long Bay

Wooden boats or steel vessels? Which boat to choose?

Previously, cruising tours on Halong Bay is mainly operated on wooden boats, and each has less than 15 cabins. This wooden boat has sailed, and facilities are made from wood to create a very cozy and warm space onboard. They are also exquisite with sails while cruising in the green bay.

In recent years, steel vessels are made to be more luxurious and comfortable. Each ship has more cabins to accommodate guests. The cabin is large, as modern as a hotel room in the city center with every piece of equipment for a comfortable stay.

Wooden boat or steel vessels, which to choose?

Wooden boat – a traditional cruising boat on Halong Bay

  • Pros: This boat is designed with the classic style, completely wooden cabin creating a very cozy feeling. It is usual for a small group on these wooden boats.
  • Cons: the cabin size is smaller than steel vessels (10m2 – 15m2). Other service packages and facilities are also limited to the steel one, and there would be a bar, restaurant, and sundeck to serve your trip.
  • Price range: from> 2,500,000 VND per person to join a sharing tour, two people in 1 room with food, activities, entrance fee, and transfer from Hanoi

Boutique wooden boats on Halong bay

Steel vessels, the new generation of cruising boats on  Halong Bay

For a long time, most cruising boats to Halong Bay are wooden boats with sails and covered with brown colors. It is the traditional boats to create a cozy space for tourists. In recent years, steel vessels are produced with more cabins to meet the rising demand of tourists and provide more modern facilities for tourists. Each steel vessel has 20 – 40 spacious cabins, the cabin size is 25m2 – 90m2 and some have a private balcony.

Visiting sites and experience on two day 1-night cruise

During two day night cruise on Halong Bay, the boat will not cruise for the whole time but stop for outdoor activities. The most popular events are kayaking, taking local bamboo boats, visiting caves, fishing villages,s or cyclings on the islands.

Kayaking in Halong Bay

The best experience to explore Halong Bay “closer.” The water in Halong Bay is calm, so you are free to enjoy kayaking around the limestone island.

There would be a double kayak ( for two persons) or a single kayak (for one person). Some cruise company offers stand-up kayak (you stand and paddle, it seems attractive).

It is not hard to learn to paddle if it is your first time. Listen to the tour guide’s instructions and follow him during kayaking time, you will be safe and spend a lovely time enjoying the nature of Halong Bay.

Besides, you should spread the paddle, go kayaking, and get closer to the limestone islets or wriggle through the water cave.

Kayaking on Halong Bay

Visiting the natural caves

Halong Bay is famous for its natural caves with unique geology, aesthetics, and archaeological values. It takes a little trek to reach the cave’s entrance, but once you are in, you will be amazed by the beauty of this cave.

You’ll find unique rock formations when getting inside the caves. Some famous caves in Halong Bay: Sung Sot Cave, Thien Cung Cave, Dau Go Cave, Trinh Nu Cave, Trong Cave, Me Cung Cave, and Thien Canh Son Cav e. With locals, each cave is associated with mysterious stories from old times.

Visiting fishing village

If you want to discover beauty as well as learn about the local community living in Halong Bay, you should not miss the fishing villages. Within the 2 day 1-night cruise schedule, time for visiting the fishing village will be arranged in the morning of the 2nd day. It is the best time to see the living of locals here.

There would be locals with their bamboo boats to take you around the villages for a specific time (usually lasting for 45 minutes to 1 hour). It could be a pearl farm can be located next to these fishing villages, and you might stop by to see how they rise the mussels for pearls.

Depending on the specific route, you will visit different fishing villages. Among them, three main fishing villages, attracting many tourists are Vung Vieng fishing village (Bai Tu Long Bay), Cua Van fishing village, and Ba Hang fishing village (Halong Bay) and some others in Lan Ha Bay, Cat Ba Island.

Visiting the island

The most famous islands which you could visit during this journey are Soi Sim Island, Titop Island, and Hon Co Island. Visitors are impressed and surprised by the white sand beaches, the blue seawater, and the rich flora and fauna.

The best thing when visiting these islands is you can trek to the top and enjoy a panoramic view of  Halong Bay.

Sung Sot cave

Sung Sot Cave locates on Bo Hon Island, toward northwest Halong Bay, about 15 km to the South-East of Tuan Chau Marina

To reach the cave, you have to climb up 100 or so steps to the entrance of Sung Sot Cave. The grotto covers 10,000 square meters.

Getting inside the cave is separated into 2 caverns. The first caverns are smaller and connected by a small passageway to the giant cavern, which is big enough to hold 1,000 people or more. The entire cave is unique with stalactites and stalagmites in a different formation.

Sung Sot cave could be included in a tour program of a day tour (6-hour journey) or overnight cruise in the Halong Bay cruise route and worth a morning or afternoon visit.

Sung Sot cave, the biggest cave in Halong Bay

Titov island

Titop Island locates in the center of Halong Bay, just eight kilometers from the harbor.

Visit Titop Island, enjoy a climb of a few hundred steps to have a panoramic view of Halong Bay, and it is definitely worth the effort.

There is also a sandy beach where you can swim or sunbathe, and spend some time relaxing. Although it is relatively small, Titov Island is regarded as one of the most picturesque islands in the bay.

The visit to Titov island could be included tour program of  a day tour (6-hour journey) or an overnight cruise on the Halong Bay cruise route

The peak in Titov island

Cat  Ba archipelago

Cat Ba Island belongs to Hai Phong City, about 10km southeast of Halong Bay, 30km from the city center of Hai Phong. Cat Ba archipelago is composed of 367 islands on the water of Lan Ha Bay. You can stay overnight at hotels on Cat Ba island. If taking an overnight cruise to visit Lan Ha Bay, you will get to Cat Ba island for hiking or cycling to visit local villages.

Sunset in Cat Ba island

Viet Hai village

Viet Hai Village locates on Cat Ba island, about 18 kilometers from Cat Ba town.

Visit Viet Hai village. Visitors can enjoy the natural beauty, tranquil atmosphere, and local life. Cycling to visit Viet Hai village is included in an overnight cruise program of some cruise operators in Lan Ha Bay.

Cycling to Viet Hai village in Cat Ba island

Thien Canh Son cave

Thien Canh Son cave is on Hon Co island (Bai Tu Long Bay), you will climb up to 100 steps to reach the entrance of the cave. The door is small, so you need to duck down slightly so as not to hit your head on the low access. Thien Canh Son Cave has two caverns each one strewn with stalactites and stalagmites.  The visit to Thien Canh Son cave will be included in an overnight cruise to Bai Tu Long Bay.

The marvelous Thien Canh Son cave

Vong Vieng fishing village

Vung Vieng fishing village locates in  Bai Tu Long Bay, 24 km from the mainland. This village used to be home to hundreds of residents who live on fishing. But, they have moved to the region now to settle for a better life, the village now is still a  peaceful location viewing the charming landscape, an ideal place to know about local floating life on Halong Bay.

The visit to Vong Vieng fishing village could be included in a day trip or overnight cruise to Bai Tu Long Bay cruise routes.

Floating houses in Vung Vieng fishing village

Bright and Dark cave

Lying on the border of Halong Bay, Bai Tu Long Bay, and Lan Ha Bay, near Cat Ba National Park, you will find two extraordinary caves where limestone mountains meet the sea to create a unique combination of nature: Bright and Dark Caves.

The visit to Bright and Dark caves could be included in an overnight cruise on Lan Ha Bay.

How do you stay comfortable on the boat?

Even if you stay on a traditional wooden boat or modern steel vessel, you are offered a comfortable space with modern facilities. In particular, many luxurious ships are remarkably like 5-star hotels on the mainland.

An en-suite cabin

Every wooden boat or steel vessel has comfortable cabins. Furthermore, most of the guest’s cabins are made and decorated from wood. It is very warm and cozy inside these cabins.

All the cabins will have a private bathroom and a large sea-view window. Many vessels feature cabins with private balconies and seating areas

Each cabin typically accommodates 2 persons (one double bed or two single beds), the extra beds or triple cabins, and family cabins are also available. If you are looking for connecting cabins to take care of children, some vessels do have this type of cabin.

Suite cabin on La Regina Legend luxury cruise

Bar & Restaurant

Usually, each cruising boat has one restaurant to serve onboard customers fully. All meals, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be served here. However, other vessels might have two restaurants (indoor and outdoor restaurants) to cater to your dining experience.

Some cruise operators even offer exclusive dining on the top deck (V’ spirit Premier), and dinner on the floating ground. In the past, there used to be a dinner in the cave, but it is no longer available now.

The bar onboard can serve you different kinds of drinks ( soft drinks, alcohol, and non-alcohol drinks) so you do not need to bring your own. But, the drink’s price will be a bit higher than in the shop on the mainland.

The restaurant has a large capacity, even up to hundreds of people. Thus, you are free to enjoy the dining experience with your friends and family.

Food serving will be mostly Vietnamese food mixed with some Western food to better suit guests’ tastes.  The meals could be set menu or buffet and ala carte depending on each cruise operator.

If you have any special requirements (vegetarian, no dairy, no meats…), the chef will be willing to cater to your need. Just need to inform us in advance when booking a cruise.

Restaurant on Perla Dawn Sails luxury cruise

Sundeck & Lounge

Each boat will have a separate area on the highest floor for guests to relax. The sundeck has enough beds and space for all guests. Here is the best place to witness the sunset and dawn over Halong Bay. Morning Taichi is also performed here. I could say that the best time on the Halong Bay cruise is watching the sunset on sundeck.

Spacious sundeck on Halong Bay cruise

Spa and massage service

Mostly on steel vessels, they serve you spa and massage service, it would be ideal to have this treatment after a long day with many outdoor activities on Halong Bay.

Besides, the 5-star cruise now has many other available services such as a swimming pool, gym room, library, and mini-golf.

Meals and dining service

On tour, there are always professional chefs serving meals for you. Meals on board could be set menu, buffet, or ala carte depending on each cruise operator. In particular, the chefs are willing to serve your special request: vegetarian, no dairy, need to inform them in advance, then you can enjoy your meals as requested.

The meals will be included in the tour price, but the drinks like wine, spirits, beer, or soft drinks, will not be included and you will pay for the bill. Moreover, the price of drinks onboard is relatively expensive than in mainland shops.

Questions & answers (2).

What the better cruise Halong Bay or Lan Ha Bay?

Dear Cushla Davis, Please note that in terms of sceneraries, the two bays will be the same. However, Halongbay is more popular so it will be more crowded, while Lan Ha Bay will be a bit less touristy. I hope to hear from you soon and please let me know if you have any other inquiries. Best regards, Annie (Ms.)

How much is a 1-night and 2-night itinerary?

The price depends on the cruise types you book. Cruises could be divided into 3 main types including Budget, Mid-range, and Luxury cruises corresponding to 3*, 4*, and 5* quality.

For a 1-night itinerary, budget cruises cost you around US$110-130, mid-range cruises cost around US$130-160, and luxury ones cost around US$160-250 per person. Some super-luxury cruises can cost up to US$400 per person for one night on Halong Bay. For a 2-night itinerary, it costs from US$220 to 600 per person.

What time does the 1-night itinerary finish?

It depends on each cruise’s program but 1-night itineraries finish at noon time. The disembarking time could be between 10:30 to 11:30 am.

Which cruises have a 3-night itinerary?

There are a few cruises operating for 3 nights such as Stellar of the Seas, Elite of the Seas, Heritage Binh Chuan, Dragon Legend, L’Amour Junk, Prince Junk, Red Dragon, and Dragon Pearl Junk.

Is kayaking included in all itineraries?

All overnight cruises include kayaking in their programs while Day cruises lasting from at least 6 to 8 hours include this activity. Itineraries from 2 nights upward usually include more kayaking time than 1-night itineraries and you will have a chance to kayak at the deeper and secluded parts of the bay.

Although the kayaking fee is usually included in the tour price of most cruises, it is charged as a personal expense on few cruises or only free of charge for a 2-night itinerary. So, please check with the travel consultant for more details.

If I have 2 nights left and will fly to Danang from Hanoi at 4 pm, should I book 2 nights?

It is possible for you to book a 2-night trip if you book a cruise with a proper schedule and can manage the transfer well.

Cruises may come back to the port at around 10:30 - 11:30. Paradise Elegance and Ambassador are among the top cruises having disembark time at 10:30 am. If you use a shuttle bus, it takes you around 2.5 hours from the port to Hanoi Old Quarter and 30 minutes more from there to Hanoi Airport. Otherwise, you can book a private car from the port so you can reach the Airport at around 2:00 - 2:30 pm.

Is there any cruise setting sail on 2 to 3 bays at a time?

Each cruise is only allowed to visit one bay at a time. However, there are still some cruises combining 2 bays in their 2-night itineraries by using a small boat on the second day to bring travelers to visit another bay during the daytime and come back to the main vessel in the late afternoon. You can refer to the 3 day - 2 night itinerary of Emperor Cruise or Amanda Cruise.

Which 1-night itinerary is most cost-saving?

There are many economical overnight cruises that you can refer to such as Amanda Cruise ($110/pax), Phoenix (US$125-130), Swan (US$139-149), etc.

Besides, many travel companies offer early-bird, last-minute, or special promotions throughout the year, especially in the low season (May to September). Therefore, you can take this advantage to book a mid-range or luxury cruise at a very reasonable price.

More About Cruise Itineraries

No better way to enjoy the beauty of Halong bay than joining a cruise trip. There are different itineraries for you to choose from. It could be a day trip lasting for 4 - 8 hours. It could be overnight trips lasting from only 1 to 3 - 4 nights. However, the most common itineraries are 2 days/1 night and 3 days/2 nights.

Visitors can find both itineraries on Halong Bay, Lan Ha Bay, and Bai Tu Long Bay. You may wonder about the difference between Halong Bay and the two extension bays called Lan Ha and Bai Tu Long. If you want to visit the Heritage site with more bustling attractions, Halong bay is a must. However, if you prefer less-touristy routes and want to enjoy the scenery of secluded parts, Lan Ha and Bai Tu Long Bay would suit you better.

1 night and 2 nights - What are the differences?

halong cruise 1 night

In addition to the length of time, 2 days/1 night and 3 days/2 nights itineraries also have differences in activities and prices. You can refer to the 3 main differences below to choose the most suitable itinerary for you.

In fact, all cruises depart at noon the first day and come back at the same time on the next day. As a result, you will have almost 24 hours onboard for 2 days/1 night itinerary. Hence, the time onboard for 3 days/2 nights itineraries is almost 48 hours.

Since the onboard activities are repeated day by day, visitors on 1-night itineraries can join all onboard activities as those on 2-night itineraries such as watching sunset and sunrise from the sundeck or private cabins, joining cooking demonstrations, sunset party, squid fishing, Taichi, etc. However, the more time you stay, the more off-board activities you can join. If 1-night programs can bring you to some most popular and near landmarks, 2-night ones give you a chance to go deep into the ocean and access the most untouched parts of the bay.

Obviously, the price of 2-night itineraries is higher than 1-night ones. However, it is not only the more activities and services you can experience but also the more relaxed and enjoyable you feel. You have options to join the onboard activities on the first or second night as they are repeated. You can experience as much of what Halong bay has to offer. You can watch stunning landscapes without being in a hurry, and more.

The 8 best Hawaii cruises in 2024 and 2025

C ruising the Hawaiian Islands offers U.S. travelers an immersive South Pacific escape with all the comforts of home. In fact, the Aloha State is in many ways an ideal cruise destination. It has year-round sunny weather, four main islands featuring varied topographies — including sandy beaches, cascading waterfalls, volcanic mountains and vibrant green valleys — and a wide array of land- and water-based activities.

The main caveat? Hawaii cruise options are somewhat limited — just a fraction of what's available in the Caribbean — and many itineraries involve multiday crossings from the West Coast. Only one cruise line offers Hawaii itineraries throughout the year; most others visit during specific months or when repositioning ships in spring and fall.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Looking for the Hawaiian Islands sailing that's right for you? Here's a look at the eight best Hawaii cruises for every type of traveler.

Norwegian Cruise Line's 7-night Inter-island Hawaii

For travelers who want more aloha time than the typical eight-hour port call allows, Norwegian Cruise Line has a solution. Its 2,186-passenger Pride of America lets vacationers sample four Hawaiian islands over seven days, with overnights in Maui and Kauai, plus port calls on both Hilo and Kona on the island of Hawaii. In total, this itinerary offers nearly 100 hours of shore time.

Pride of America sails round-trip from Honolulu every Saturday year-round. As a U.S.-flagged ship, it's the only large vessel permitted to sail this way. Not only do you skip the long Pacific crossing that most cruise ships do to reach Hawaii, but passports are not required for U.S. citizens, and you can tack on pre- or post-cruise stays on Oahu.

The overnights on Maui and Kauai also mean it's possible to try several of Hawaii's signature experiences that most port calls don't allow. Passengers can catch dusk or dawn from atop Maui's massive 10,023-foot dormant volcano with sunrise and sunset excursions to the Haleakala Crater. And with the ship in port all night on Kauai, guests who want to enjoy traditional Hawaiian cuisine, music and hula performances can book the Luau Kalamaku for a fun evening out.

Pride of America, which has been cruising Hawaii since 2005, doesn't have the onboard thrills (race track, virtual-reality gaming, waterslides) of Norwegian's newer ships , but that's okay because the islands, not the ship, are your main destination. Its American-themed decor celebrates U.S. cities in a vibrant, and at times, kitschy way, but a 2021 refurbishment left its cabins and public spaces feeling refreshed.

Many of Norwegian's specialty dining venues (which incur a surcharge) are on board, including Cagney's Steakhouse, Le Bistro (here, it's Jefferson's Bistro), Moderno Churrascaria and Teppanyaki.

Who should go: Anyone seeking a convenient way to island-hop — and see a lot of Hawaii — by making the most of the generous shore time with a combination of independent exploration and shore excursions. Most sailings attract couples ages 50 and older, although summer and holiday sailings have plenty of families on board.

UnCruise Adventures' 7-night Hawaiian Seascapes

Cruisers seeking a less traditional, more carefree Hawaii experience can have it from November to April aboard UnCruise Adventures ' 36-passenger Safari Explorer. The seven-night Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary, which begins either on Molokai or the island of Hawaii, is an unconventional one designed for those who enjoy going off the beaten path in an intimate and more authentic setting. U.S. passports aren't required to sail.

UnCruise visits four islands — Maui and Lanai plus Molokai and Hawaii — and focuses on not only their striking landscapes and underwater beauty but also the cultural traditions, cuisine and music of the Hawaiian people. On Molokai, where there's not a single traffic light and the lifestyle is slow-paced, passengers get a chance to "talk story" with locals and enjoy a pa'ina (feast) and evening jam session. Lanai activities range from snorkel, paddleboard and kayak excursions to off-road adventures exploring the privately owned island's dramatic sea cliffs, red rock formations and vast fields once filled with Dole pineapples.

Most UnCruise sailings are during Maui's humpback whale season, so sightings while cruising off the coast of Maui are possible. You might also catch glimpses of dolphins and sea turtles. A "Captain's Choice" day is a wild card determined by the weather, marine life in the area and other factors, while the final two days are spent exploring the Big Island of Hawaii — including a hike up Hualalai volcano and a skiff ride along the rugged coast.

Constructed in 1998, Safari Explorer was designed with adventure itineraries in mind (in summer the U.S.-flagged ship repositions to Alaska). Its size allows it to navigate areas larger ships can't reach, which in Hawaii means bays and coves ideal for snorkeling or watersports.

With such a small number of passengers aboard, guests get to know each other — and Safari Explorer's friendly and knowledgeable crew — quite well. Passengers come together over meals featuring locally sourced ingredients, and as all UnCruise fares include unlimited wines, spirits and microbrews, shipmates can raise a glass without worrying who's buying a round. It all lends itself to an exclusive yet utterly relaxed week of cruising.

Who should go: The ship's laid-back onboard vibe paired with its land- and water-based activities make the Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary ideal for active travelers seeking a nature-focused itinerary — although cruise fares (which start around $5,900 per person) are among the priciest for a Hawaii cruise.

Holland America's 17-night Circle Hawaii

Travelers who have more than two weeks to spare and who prefer to arrive in Hawaii via ship rather than an airplane can do so on Holland America 's 17-night Circle Hawaii itinerary. They'd better also love sea days because crossing the Pacific from San Diego or Vancouver to Honolulu and back requires 10 days.

That means passengers enjoy five or six days in Hawaii on Kauai, Oahu, Maui and the island of Hawaii. Some itineraries stay in select ports overnight. Cruises departing from San Diego also call on Ensenada, Mexico. With either departure port, passports will be required.

The itinerary is offered in 2024 and 2025 on the 2,650-passenger Koningsdam and 1,432-passenger Zaandam.

Travelers with more time on their hands can also visit Hawaii as part of longer Pacific island cruises with Holland America. Koningsdam will sail a 35-night Hawaii, Tahiti & Marquesas itinerary in 2025 that combines visits to four Hawaiian islands with calls on five islands in French Polynesia and Fanning Island, Kiribati (and 20 sea days).

Related: Holland America unveils epic cruise to Hawaii and Alaska for 2025

Zaandam will also sail 51- to 56-night Tales of the South Pacific itineraries that visit multiple islands in Hawaii and French Polynesia along with ports in the Cook Islands, American Samoa and Fiji.

Holland America is popular with cruisers ages 60 and older, many of them retired, who have time to enjoy longer itineraries on ships that offer good value with a focus on culinary and musical enjoyment. Two of Koningsdam's most popular venues are its live entertainment area with three venues — B.B. King's Blues Club (for Memphis-style rhythm and blues), Billboard Onboard (for chart-topping hits played by a live pianist) and Rolling Stone Rock Room (for a live band playing classic rock), and World Stage, a theater with a 270-degree screen used for both special BBC Earth in Concert and theatrical productions.

Onboard specialty dining options (at an added cost) include Pinnacle Grill for steaks and seafood, Tamarind for Pan-Asian cuisine and Rudi's Sel de Mer for French Brasserie specialties and seafood.

Who should go: Mature travelers who prefer not to fly and who enjoy a more traditional cruise experience. They should also love sea days as much (or even more so) than port exploration.

Princess Cruises' 15- or 16-night Hawaiian Islands

Princess Cruises is also a good option for longer sailings. The cruise line offers numerous round-trip itineraries to Hawaii from Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego in the fall and winter.

The majority of sailings are aboard the 3,080-passenger Crown Princess and Ruby Princess from San Francisco, and the 2,600-passenger Grand Princess and 3,080-passenger Emerald Princess from Los Angeles.

Ships are in port for nine to 11 hours in Hawaii (Hilo), Kauai and Maui and for 16 hours in Oahu. Itineraries include a stop in Ensenada, Mexico (so passports are required), plus nine or 10 sea days.

The ships feature many of Princess' popular dining venues, including Alfredo's Pizzeria (a sit-down venue serving personal-size pizzas), Crown Grill for steaks and Sabatini's Italian Trattoria. There's plenty of outdoor space for soaking up the sun — including an adults-only sun deck — and a dazzling Piazza for enjoying cocktails, gelato and pop-up street performers.

Fans of Princess' Movies Under the Stars poolside screenings (with free popcorn) and Discovery at SEA enrichment programming will have ample time to enjoy these perks on a Hawaii sailing.

Who should go: These sailings will appeal to couples or groups of friends who prefer to have a wide choice of sailing dates, can take the time to enjoy a leisurely Pacific crossing and appreciate Princess' focus on quality cuisine and a sun deck designed for relaxation rather than thrills.

Celebrity's 9- to 12-night Hawaii Cruise

Travelers seeking modern interior decor on a ship designed with couples in mind can visit Hawaii aboard Celebrity Cruises ' 2,852-passenger Celebrity Solstice or 2,918-passenger Celebrity Edge on itineraries ranging from nine to 13 nights — but only if the timing is right. That's because the line offers only two sailings per ship each year (in spring and fall) as the ships reposition between Alaska and destinations in the Pacific. The itineraries are one-way (Vancouver to Honolulu or vice versa) with passports required.

These cruises call on three ports on two islands: Honolulu (Oahu) and Hilo and Kona (Hawaii), with one or two overnights in port and 10 hours ashore on one-day visits. All include five days in a row at sea. Since the itineraries either begin or end in Honolulu, there's also a chance for some pre- or post-cruise exploration.

Sea days offer opportunities to enjoy the chic, grown-up ambience and amenities aboard these ships. Each vessel offers multiple complimentary and extra-fee specialty restaurants. Celebrity Solstice features Tuscan Grille for Italian specialties and steak and Murano for modern French cuisine, while Celebrity Edge offers the whimsical Le Petit Chef and the international Eden Restaurant.

Celebrity's signature Martini Bar and many other onboard watering holes keep the grown-up vibe going day and night. Choose cruise fares that include alcohol and Wi-Fi, or pay a lower rate and pay for your drinks as you go.

Who should go: The slightly shorter one-way sailings and the ships' contemporary ambience make these itineraries ideal for couples and groups of friends seeking a relaxing escape — especially Gen Xers in their 40s and 50s, who are Celebrity's target market.

Carnival's 14- or 15-night Hawaii from Los Angeles

If fun is your cruise mantra, the "Fun Ship" brand Carnival Cruise Line offers a handful of round-trip sailings to Hawaii from Los Angeles (Long Beach) aboard the 2,984-passenger Carnival Radiance. Like other roundtrips from the West Coast, these itineraries spend just five days in Hawaii, offering eight to 14 hours of shore time in ports on four islands: Maui, Kauai, Oahu and Hawaii. Along with enjoying eight sea days, guests will also call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Carnival Radiance first sailed under that name in 2021, but it's not a new ship. Before an epic makeover, it sailed for the cruise line as Carnival Victory. Ship features include many of Carnival's signature complimentary and extra-fee dining venues, including Guy's Burger Joint and Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse, BlueIguana Cantina, Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse and Bonsai Sushi Express.

Additional guest favorite destinations on board include the RedFrog Pub, Alchemy Bar and WaterWorks aquapark. Expect high-voltage theater shows from Playlist Productions at night and poolside interactive contests by day.

Who should go: Socially inclined cruisers who love Carnival's emphasis on onboard fun and can appreciate a colorful ship with a lively ambience and lots of day and evening activities.

Royal Caribbean's 9- to 13-night Hawaii Cruises

A megaship cruise experience to Hawaii is available, too — with pricing that's quite affordable. Royal Caribbean cruises there on two vessels in one of its newer classes of ships: the 4,180-passenger Quantum of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas.

All are one-way cruises just before or after the Alaska cruise season (so late April or early October) between Oahu and Vancouver (or vice versa). The ships call on two Hawaiian islands and spend four or five days in a row at sea. Passports are required since these itineraries begin or end in Vancouver.

Ovation of the Seas and Quantum of the Seas feature a mix of thrills for all ages. These include RipCord by iFly simulated sky diving, FlowRider simulated surfing, bumper car racing in the SeaPlex indoor activity complex and the North Star sightseeing capsule, which ascends 300 feet above the top deck for 360-degree views.

Both ships also offer 14 dining venues, including the innovative Wonderland, Jamie's Italian by Jamie Oliver and kid-favorite Dog House, as well as bar options that include Schooner Bar for by-request piano tunes, Boleros for mojitos and merengue and Bionic Bar for drinks poured by robotic bartenders. Entertainment includes live cover bands in the Music Hall and multimedia music and dance performances in Two70.

Who should go: Cruisers who love a big ship with a wide array of dining choices, all kinds of evening entertainment and plenty of exciting activities to pass the time on sea days. Quantum-class ships are great for families, but the sail dates might not work for those with school-age kids.

Viking's 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn

For a guaranteed adults-only sailing in a relaxed, boutique-style setting, upscale cruise line Viking also offers round-trip Hawaii cruises from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 on its 930-passenger Viking Neptune.

What sets Viking apart from most of the other lines offering Hawaii cruises is that it includes a free shore excursion in every port. These include a highlights tour of Honolulu and Pearl Harbor on Oahu and a visit to a scenic waterfall and the Kilohana sugar plantation on Kauai. Additional excursions can be booked at an extra charge.

The 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn sailings visit four islands — Hawaii (Hilo), Oahu, Kauai and Maui — and like other round-trip sailings from the West Coast include 10 sea days and a call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Viking Neptune will also do 32-night Grand Hawaii and Polynesia sailings round-trip from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 that visit four islands in Hawaii and four in French Polynesia.

The ship, which debuted in 2022, features sleek Scandinavian-inspired decor, a soothing spa with a complimentary thermal area, an aft infinity pool and hot tub, a panoramic Explorer's Lounge and five onboard restaurants. Specialty restaurant Manfredi's serves an extensive menu of Italian specialties, while The Chef's Table offers rotating five-course themed menus, including Asian, French and California-inspired.

In addition to the free shore excursions, pricing includes complimentary wine or beer with lunch and dinner, specialty dining at no extra charge, crew gratuities and transfers.
