Key West Information:

Here is some basic information on Key West!

  • Southernmost City: Key West is the southernmost city in the continental United States, situated at the tip of the Florida Keys archipelago. Key West is located approximately 129 miles southwest of Miami, Florida. The most common route to travel from Miami to Key West is along the Overseas Highway (U.S. Route 1) , which connects the mainland to the Florida Keys and the route to where all your troubles melt away.

Tropical Paradise: On average, Key West experiences around 250 to 260 sunny days per year making it an ideal destination for those seeking sun and relaxation.

Small But Mighty : Key West is approximately 4 miles long and about 1 mile wide at its widest point. The island is relatively small, and its compact size makes it easy to explore by foot, bicycle, or other forms of transportation.

Historic Charm: Immerse yourself in history with attractions like the Ernest Hemingway Home , Truman Little White House, and Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park.

Vibrant Duval Street: Experience the lively atmosphere of Duval Street, known for its vibrant nightlife, diverse shops, and a variety of restaurants.

Water Adventures: Explore the crystal-clear waters surrounding Key West through activities such as snorkeling, diving, fishing, and boat tours, offering a rich marine life experience.

Getting To Key West

Getting to Key West may take a bit of pre-planning. You can drive, fly or take a boat!

Drive: The most scenic way to get to Key West would be by car from Miami, Florida. The drive is approximately 129 miles and takes approximately 3-4 hours depending on traffic. Winding through a series of interconnected islands including the beautiful Key Islamorada, this iconic highway offers breathtaking views of turquoise waters and lush landscapes. If you are not in a hurry, grab a bite to eat along the way at Marker 88 or  Robbies of Islamorada . A great mid-way stop to Key West offering cold drinks and delicious food! For a beautiful overnight stay check out the Checca Lodge in Islamorada. It is located right on the water with some great fishing, fine dining and beautiful accommodations.

Another notable stop would be the Seven Mile Bridge . An iconic engineering marvel, the Seven Mile Bridge provides stunning views of the turquoise waters. Stop at the Old Seven Mile Bridge for a leisurely walk or bike ride. You may remember the Seven Mile Bridge in the movie True Lies . A 1994 action-comedy film directed by James Cameron and stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis.

marker-88-islamorada-florida-keys

Boat:   Taking a boat is a quick and great way to get to Key West if you are already visiting other parts of Florida.

The Key West Express offers service to Key West from Fort Myers , and Marco Island . The trip takes approximately 3-3.5 hours and you avoid all that nasty Miami traffic! We have taken the Key West Express twice now and can say it was very convenient and less stressful way to get to Key West!

key-west-express

Plane:   Although Key West is a very small airport they do have direct flights from major cities such as: New York, Boston, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Charlotte, Atlanta, Chicago and more.

Some of the major airlines that currently fly to Key West are: American Airlines , Delta Airlines , United , Jet Blue and Silver Airlines .

The airport is right in Key West and not far from all of the attractions.

TIP: For my travel planning I love to use Kayak for car rentals, airfare and hotel pricing.

Where To Stay:

Key West has plenty of accommodations for such a small island! From hotels, and inns to bed & breakfasts to house boat stays, airbnb’s and camping! They really cover it all! Check out a full list at the official Key West Tourism page. I will note a few great places here that you may want to consider.

Alonzo’s Oyster Bar: There’s no guesswork here because there’s actually a happy hour small plate and bar menu. As  the name implies, there’s a raw bar offering $2 raw oysters on happy hour. I absolutely love Key West. I haven’t visited for over a decade but now I really want to go back after reading your delightful article. The only thing missing was a photo of a Hemingway cat. They are adorable.

Oh yes!!! I need to insert a picture of that cat for sure!👏🥰

' src=

I really loved Key West (it’s been a while) especially driving there over all the bridges from Miami was such fun. And of course, we visited the Hemingway Museum. Don’t care too much for his writing but acknowledge he is a literary great- of course we came for the cats!

Thank you for writing! That drive is gorgeous for sure!💕 Love Key West!

' src=

Wow, Key West sounds wonderful but what will really get me there is the Key Lime Pie!

Absolutely!! 👏

' src=

Thank you for sharing your first-hand experience of Key West with us. Taking in the scenic views and sipping on delicious cocktails, enjoying water adventures and the historic charm of the city can be a wonderful experience.

Little Palm Island was a bit pricey, but still affordable several years ago. It’s located on Little Torch Key and we would go there for lunch or dinner. You have to take a nice boat ride to the island, they had live music at night, and you can see the lights of Key West at night. It got really expensive after the pandemic so we haven’t been since then. We’re going to Key West in July and I plan to check prices again because I would love to go back. You can also stay on the island.

Yes!! Its suppose to be amazing! I haven’t stayed there either but looks so beautiful. My parents went for dinner there and said it was a truly memorable dinner on the beach and the food was amazing! I hope that you have a great trip! 😊

' src=

Next time you visit, I highly recommend checking out Key West First Legal Rum Distillery. The owner is a very well known high-end chef and a lot of fun to talk to

Yes, thank you for the recommendation! We will definitely check this place out next time and meet the owner. There are so many hidden gems in KW!🥰👏

Happy Hour Tour with West Palm Beach Food Tours

happy hour on tour

The new downtown West Palm Beach tour includes creative cocktails, small bites, and stories of the scandalous Prohibition days

Taking a food tour of your own stomping grounds may seem touristy, but when you’re led by a guide as knowledgeable and passionate as downtown West Palm Beach resident Kristl Story, even longtime locals are guaranteed to learn something new.

Story, owner of West Palm Beach Food Tours , has hosted over 10,000 guests since launching the tour company in 2015. With food tourism currently a top trend in travel, plus comfortably small group sizes (tours are capped at 12 people), business is growing—and supporting the pandemic-ravaged restaurant industry along the way.

Story’s latest offer, the Happy Hour Tour, joins her popular Downtown West Palm Beach Food Tour, which was named a “Top 10 Tour Experience in the United States” by TripAdvisor in 2019, and her Historic West Palm Beach Neighborhood Food Tour, which includes transportation in a luxury van to south-side hotspots like Grandview Public Market, Havana, Nomad at Sean Rush, and Rhythm Café.

The newly debuted Happy Hour Tour—which Story describes as “a cocktail party on the move”—includes three full-size cocktails, three appetizers, and a fully guided tour; along the way, guests will learn cocktail-crafting tips, hear stories of local speakeasies and scandals, and be treated to exclusive access and VIP perks like bartender demonstrations, chef meet-and-greets, and cocktail recipe cards to take home.

Stops on the Happy Hour Tour include Hullabaloo for an espresso martini with zucchini chips and roasted red bell pepper sauce; The Blind Monk for a Cappelletti spritz with Spanish pan con tomate ; and Sassafras for a Young Lavender cocktail with hush puppies.

The two-hour Happy Hour Tour is offered on Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tickets cost $65 and can be purchased online here . Guests should wear shoes and clothing in which they are comfortable walking about one mile.

Richard Gadd in Baby Reindeer on Netflix.

Netflix's 'Baby Reindeer': A dark, haunting story bungles its depiction of queerness

Pop Culture Happy Hour

Netflix's 'baby reindeer': a dark, haunting story bungles its depiction of queerness.

Baby Reindeer on Netflix is absolutely insane. It's about a guy who meets a woman who starts stalking him. I do not want to spoil it. It is making me happy and also stressing me out. I think everyone should watch it if you have the space and time. I have a lot of thoughts about it that I've been trying to work through but I enjoyed it. Sometimes you need to sit through something that's going to keep your heart rate at 160, you know? Why not? — Ryan Mitchell

The podcast Who Killed the Video Star: The Story of MTV

There is no Gen-X complaint more overdone than "they don't play videos on MTV anymore." So I didn't think there was anything left to say about that, but that was before I started to listen to a podcast called Who Killed the Video Star: The Story of MTV. This podcast really gets into the history of MTV's original model and its limitations. It goes through how originally, when they were not playing Black artists on MTV very much or at all, MTV's response was: That's not our format. The audience won't respond to it. So then Michael Jackson's "Thriller" comes out and they are completely wrong, and it's the biggest thing in the history of MTV. The whole thing is hosted by former MTV VJ Dave Holmes (no relation) who has also been a panelist on Pop Culture Happy Hour. He just understands pop culture of my exact vintage in a way that very few people do. It is such a good show. — Linda Holmes

Chappell Roan's Tiny Desk Concert

Last fall, pop singer Chappell Roan put out a record called The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess. It is joyful and funny and has beautiful, heartfelt ballads on it. I had the privilege of booking and producing her Tiny Desk concert — the set captures the range of her sound because it's funny, it's quiet, it's warm, it's silly. So what is making me happy is the massive, meteoric, heart-swellingly wonderful rise of Chappell Roan. — Stephen Thompson

Playing retro video games on an Anbernic console

I love retro gaming. So I bought the Anbernic RG35XX H. There are a lot of devices that are sold online that you can play a lot of old games on. But this one doesn't require the amount of setup that a lot of those do. As someone who enjoys these games but doesn't actually engage with them as often as I would like, I think I finally cracked the code — and the code was to get the right size device that has the right amount of power. It's been a lot of fun. — Daisy Rosario

More recommendations from the Pop Culture Happy Hour newsletter

by Linda Holmes

I wrote four years ago about my love of simulator games, including Planet Zoo , which I was playing on a PC despite my general preference for console gaming, because that's all there was. WELL. I am excited to tell you that Planet Zoo is now available for consoles (as of just a few weeks ago), and I am playing the heck out of it on my PS5. I love the orderliness of it, I love the cute little animals, and I love the part where I yell in my living room, "WHY ARE MY FLAMINGOS SO UNHAPPY?" The best. Real zoos may be controversial, but a conservation-oriented imaginary zoo is a delight. (Also out now: House Flipper 2 , the new edition of my favorite game where you clean up and rehab houses.)

I'm a big fan of both Padma Lakshmi and writer Helen Rosner, so I unsurprisingly enthusiastically recommend this terrific profile in The New Yorker.

It's rare these days to have much that's good to say about the finances of a publication you treasure, but the surprise news that The Onion was sold to new owners who actually seem to like it was very heartening.

Beth Novey adapted the Pop Culture Happy Hour segment "What's Making Us Happy" for the Web. If you like these suggestions, consider signing up for our newsletter to get recommendations every week. And listen to Pop Culture Happy Hour on Apple Podcasts and Spotify .
